QUOTE OF THE WEEK “My body is like breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I don’t think about it, I just have it.” -- Arnold Schwarzenegger

A man was reportedly run over by his own truck after his dog put it into gear. The sheriff’s office reported that 43-year-old Christopher Bishop was checking under his Ford F-150 for oil leaks last Sunday evening. He had put the running truck into neutral and left the driver’s door open. While he was under the truck, Bishop’s bulldog, Tassey, jumped into the truck and knocked the vehicle into gear. The truck rolled over the left side of Bishop’s body. Bishop managed to get up, stop the vehicle and went into his house. After several hours of pain, Bishop finally called for help. He was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Siblings Brawl Over Butter

An argument over butter in a macaroni and cheese recipe turned into violence between a brother and sister. A 21-yearold man called police on June 6th to say his 17-year-old sister tried to cut his neck with the serrated edge of a spatula. The police report said the sister was making macaroni and cheese when her brother asked if she was using butter. That led to an argument over the difference between butter and margarine. And, then the butter battle escalated. The Wenatchee World reported the girl was charged in Douglas County Superior Court with fourth-degree assault.

Sexy Dancer Too Old, Man Tells Police

A man on Staveley Court called the police at about 4 a.m. last Monday after a woman he found on Craigslist took money from him without “providing proper services and he feels this is improper,” according to police logs. The man had contacted a girl from a Craigslist ad with a picture and a phone number. She was to perform a “sexy dance” for $200 paid up-front, according to the log.

The girl that arrived was older than the girl in the picture, “causing the informant to reconsider,” the log states. When he told the girl to keep $20 for gas and give him back the rest of his money, the girl refused and left with the entire $200. The man, whose mother was there and “angry about it as well,” decided not to file a report. Police said no one was arrested because there is no law against a “sexy dance.” Deputies did not make contact with the woman from the ad, and it appears she kept the money, police said.

HE “ENJOYED” HAPPY HOUR NEARLY 24/7

William Pitt the Younger (British prime minister: 1783-1801, 1804-06) suffered gout at the tender age of 14, causing his doctor to suggest he drink a bottle of port wine each day for his health. And, the teenager took that “prescription” to heart. At his peak, each-and-everyday-into-night, Younger would drink, at least six bottles of port, two bottles of Madeira, then “doze off” with one or two bottles of claret. He often spoke in the House of Commons openly drunk and once, before making an important intervention during a debate, was seen ducking behind the speaker’s chair to throw up. He finally drank himself to death at age 46.

HE DRANK TO THAT, AND THAT, AND THAT...

During World War II, Winston Churchill (18741965) had drinking sessions starting early morning, going into late night. Once he tried to convince Saudi Arabia’s strict Moslim King Ibn Saud that he drank because it was part of his religion. Eventually, old age and excessive use of alcohol left him completely inactive, though still England’s prime minister until 1953. (According to Churchill himself, quote: “I have taken more good from alcohol than alcohol has taken from me.”)

HOLLYWOOD PROFILE

BLITZREVIEWS By: Joe Stumpo - www.darthstumpo.com

with Tom Cruise

by: Vivian Fullerlove “Entertainment’s Real Critic”

When you put Tom Cruise and motorcycles on the same set, action and adventure are bound to ensue. His new film Knight and Day, in which he teams up with co-star Cameron Diaz for the second time, does not disappoint. Diaz plays June Havens, a woman who finds her everyday life tangled with that of a secret agent, played by Cruise, who has realized he isn’t supposed to survive his latest assignment. As their campaign to stay alive stretches across the globe, they soon learn that all they can count on is each other. We caught up with the man for whom no mission is impossible to talk about Knight and Day and being back on the big screen with Cameron.

Tell us about the film. It’s a romantic action comedy story about girl meets boy. Boy and girl fall in love, then they split up, then they make it through this wild adventure which starts in Boston and goes to Salzburg, Austria, then Jamaica; and it’s just a wonderful fun adventure.

You play Roy Miller. What’s his story? My character is a guy who works as a spy, a secret agent, who has basically given up his own life to live this life and has been working for his country. At the beginning of the film he’s essentially trying to help out this guy who is an inventor of this battery, and his life collides with this woman who becomes entangled in this whole story.

This woman, we all know, is Cameron Diaz. Were you excited about the opportunity to work with her again? When I read the script I couldn’t wait to see what she was gonna do, and as a fan of her work and a fan of her movies, I wanted to see her play this part. She is just incredibly talented, funny

and athletic. In this character, I just loved seeing what she did with it. We worked together on Vanilla Sky, and I wanted to find something else to do with her. I really enjoy working with her.

You both do some pretty amazing stunt work in this movie. I love to entertain the audience, and part of making these movies is that I do my own stunts. I think it adds to the excitement for the audience. It’s fun to do and I enjoy doing that. I think you will enjoy seeing Tom Cruise do what he does best in Knight and Day. It is definitely a throw back to the Tom we love in movies like Mission Impossible and Top Gun. The film is playing right now in theatres nationwide. It is rated PG-13 for sequences of action and violence and brief strong language. Email me your favorite Tom Cruise movie to Vivian@reelcriticstv.com for your chance to win a pair of movie tickets to the Studio Movie Grill, and don’t forget to check out my show Reel Critics for all of this week’s new movies and more of your favorite celebrities on Time Warner Cable Video on Demand under the North Texas programming tab!

Jonah Hex

The path to taking one’s revenge out on the person who wronged them can be a long and lonely journey full of death and misery. Such is the path former Confederate soldier turned scarred bounty hunter Jonah Hex (Josh Brolin) takes as he seeks out to avenge the death of his family at the hands of Quentin Turnbull (John Malkovich). Turnbull is the old west’s version of today’s lead terrorist Osama bin Laden as Turnbull plans to wipe out Washington D.C. on July 4th using a super weapon equivalent of the 20th century’s atomic bomb. The trouble with Jonah Hex is it lacks a hero we want to root for and a villain we can’t wait to see get what’s coming to him. Jonah Hex runs a measly 81 minutes. That’s almost the equivalent length of a graphic novel. Yet it feels even longer given the film’s revenge theme. If the characters don’t look like they are enjoying themselves, what makes the filmmakers think the audience will? There is no denying Brolin steals the show as the lead character

whose best moments are not the predictably silly action sequences of eye candy where a half-dozen guns are trained on him and Hex successfully picks off the moronic gunmen all at once. Hex’s supernatural abilities are what piqued my interest as he interrogates rotting corpses who spring back to life at the touch of his hand. Chalk this would-be franchise on that updated list of worst comic book adaptations alongside that other list of lousy television show remakes and lousy remakes of great films. Not even former Transformers hottie Megan Fox cast as Hex’s damsel-in-distress and the town’s local prostitute (like what else would she do? DUH!!!) could save what is already being written off as another summer flop debuting at number six and grossing less than $6 million. If you don’t want to take my word for it, then perhaps the humorous comment I saw posted on www.imbd.com from a father quoting his nine-year-old kid about the film will convince you. “Dad, this movie sucks, can we please leave?” Enough said.

by: Tennessee Chris “Music Snob”

James Murphy, the sole troubadour of LCD Soundsystem, unleashed an album to the world that followed up his widely praised 2005 debut 45:33 with the sprawling, lyrical and dance-ready Sound of Silver. It was 2007 and hot on the heels of quite a few epic albums. An indie and media magnet from its inception, the album was immediately met with a glowing response, with many eventually acknowledging it as being one of the best albums of the decade. But now Murphy has introduced a new album, This Is Happening. It features a single that wades in tight crunch-funk verses about drunk adolescents before making the personal plea “Just ’cause I’m shallow doesn’t mean that I’m heartless/Just ’cause I’m heartless doesn’t mean that I’m mean.” But even though “Drunk Girls” is not the most obvious attempt at picking up where Sound of Silver left off, the single alludes to the general direction that This Is Happening takes: One that’s strikingly familiar despite still reflecting a sense of immediacy – déjà vu for LCD Soundsystem fans. “Dance Yrself Clean” opens the record with mellow, lumbering synthesizers that are paramount to Murphy’s building-block song structures, synths that flirt between a basic key line and Murphy’s creamy vocals before eventually exploding into a room-seizing electronic break. Murphy’s voice finally shatters the cacophony, howling and beating the hell out of the sonic walls, scattershot until the nine minute track fades into the record’s aforementioned teaser, “Drunk Girls.” “One Touch” follows with a series of erratic industrial squeals which twist into a spiraling electronic bubble before developing a fluttering loop that looms below Murphy’s weighty vocals. The first significant shift in the record comes with “All I Want.” The near-seven minute song finds its stride early on with Murphy quietly crooning over a bass, guitar, and drums. But just as the album begins to meld each unique component into one churning sound, “I Can Change” is a welcome shift and once again illuminates with Murphy’s voice. This Is Happening, at this moment, becomes a different beast – after the continuous layering and buildups and breakdowns, Murphy strips down to his voice and lyrical granite, and this continues with the unapologetic track “You Wanted a Hit.” At over nine minutes in length, the epic is very tongue-in-cheek at its hint that even the most commercial LCD Soundsystem tracks haven’t followed the traditional method to reach commercial success - whether it be sound, style, or simply length. It will not be surprising if “You Wanted a Hit” actually becomes a hit due to its melodic quality and immediate likeability. The bongo driven “Pow Pow” follows; then, the harshness of “Somebody’s Calling Me,” which mixes feathery vocals, a stilted piano melody, and jagged synth blasts. In the same vein that the somber lament of “New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down” closed out 2007’s Sound of Silver, “Home” does the same for This Is Happening. “Forget the past, this is your last chance now,” chimes Murphy as the song grows and stretches its legs. This album offers neither departure nor an enhancement for LCD Soundsystem; James Murphy is still creating interesting music that creatively blends dance-synth-pop with engaging lyrics that hang in the balance between sentimentality and loss. Murphy always presents intriguing sounds to the listener, and although this album is rumored to be his swansong, I hope that he perseveres on and continues to give us equal heartache songs and funky songs that conjure memories of drunken nights, houses shaking with beats, and the solo man behind the boards forcing our bodies to gyrate until the sun eclipses the living room. Good listening and good luck!

Brock Lesnar (4-1-0) vs. Shane Carwin (12-0-0):

You talk about two c*ck strong individuals going at it like animals and this is it. These are two of the biggest guys (with athleticism) to fight in the history of the UFC. Two very high caliber wrestlers with some very impressive victories. C*ck Chestner hasn’t fought in over a year so ring rust could play a role here. I believe Carwin has the tools to win this fight but this will be the first time he will not be able to just throw his opponent around. Brock will be all he can handle. I think it will be relatively boring the first round but I think Carwin will get the KO in the second round. Chestner will need another couple of fights but he will one day be back at the top.

Wanderlei Silva (33-10-1) vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama

:

(13-1-0)

This fight will depend on which Wandy shows up. Akiyama is relatively unknown in the U.S. but has been on quite a run in Japan. He has had success against some very aggressive and powerful strikers which is exactly what Wanderlei is. This fight really could go either way and is a tough one to call. Silva has been hit or miss since coming to the UFC and I think he is on the downhill side of his career. Akiyama will pull this one off, as much as I hate to say it, in the second round.

Chris Lytle

(38-17-4)

vs. Matt Brown (13-8-0):

This fight has “Fight of the Night” written all over it. Two very aggressive warriors who love to stand and bang and are not afraid to put it on the line. I believe that the striking is fairly even here but give Lytle the edge on the ground. Lytle does not have a record of getting finished very often and he has proven he can go the distance on any given night. Brown has shown great cardio. As well. I believe that Lytle’s wealth of experience against some of the world’s best will pull him through over Brown. I pick Lytle by TKO in the third round after one hell of a war!

VIGILANTES:News

The Dawgz Bite Hard

Last Saturday the Vigilantes were in Oklahoma City to face the Yard Dawgz. They were hoping the short trip up I-35 would end their losing streak. Starting quarterback Collin Drafts was inactive for the game after suffering a shoulder injury in the game against Alabama the week before. BJ Hall got his first start of the season. This was his chance to show he deserves to be the starter. In the first quarter, Hall seemed to struggle with the snap. The defense got a needed stop when an OKC receiver dropped a pass on fourth down. The offense failed to move the ball and actually went backwards after penalties. Mark Lewis attempted a field goal, but it was no good and Dallas only trailed 60 at the end of the first quarter. The defense gave the team a lift to start off the second quarter when Brendan Pahulu picked up a fumble and ran it in for the score. Delenall Reid came up with an interception and another stop for Dallas. Hall showed off his running skills on fourth down when he broke one for 18 yards. In the closing minute of the first half, Hall found Matt Fields for a 26-yard touchdown and a 17-13 halftime lead.

by: Craig Smith “Sportsologist” - csmith@blitzweekly.com

It’s been a tough season for the Vigilantes

The defense made a few stops in the third. Hall found Fields again on a 36-yard touchdown and Dallas lead 24-16. Will Pettis then got his first interception as a Vigilante. Hall threw an interception to start the fourth quarter meltdown. Dallas gave up a monster 44-yard touchdown pass which cut their lead down to 24-22. Once again, the game went down to the wire as OKC took the lead with 15 seconds left in the game. Dallas had one final shot with 3 seconds left but Hall was intercepted in the end zone and Dallas lost 35-31. Dallas will host the Iowa Barnstormers on Friday night at the AAC.

Memories of Manute The recent passing of former NBA player Manute Bol brought back a few memories I have of watching him play. The first thing I think of when I hear his name is a great humanitarian who always seemed to have a smile on his face. I also recall him being in probably the most interesting basketball photo I have ever seen. Bol, who was 7’7, was pictured standing next to Washington Bullets teammate Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues, who was only 5’3. They were the tallest and shortest guys in the league. One of the first things I ever heard about him was when he first started playing basketball, he knocked out a few teeth on the rim. I am pretty sure this hasn’t happened to many people in the world. I can still picture him shooting those flat-footed three-point shots and blocking shots like it was nothing. How do you shoot over a man that tall? There was also the story

of how he was herding his family cattle as a kid and had to kill a lion with a spear. He started playing basketball in 1978 as a teenager. An American coach saw him play and convinced him to come over and play in the United States. He was invited to Cleveland State University where he took English classes. He never got the chance to play basketball there because the school was placed on probation for providing him and two other African players financial assistance. He then attended the University of Bridgeport where he played basketball for one season. In 1985, he was drafted in the second round by the Washington Bullets. He set an NBA rookie record with 397 blocked

I guarantee you if Roger took a trip down to Onyx, he wouldn’t even get out of the car. And he would definitely think that the NFL’s players should be patronizing some classier joints. In fact, Goodell should take some pics of Onyx and make some posters to show the NFL’s 2010 draft class, who are in the middle of attending a symposium “designed to help them not only to their transition to the NFL, but beyond,” Goodell said. “It starts with being good men and making sure you can have as long a career as possible.” He obviously needs some visual aids when telling these jocks not to visit seedy places.

shots. He was mostly a shot blocker in his ten year career. He is the only player in NBA history to have more blocks than points. He spent a big part of his career earnings helping people in his native Sudan. He would often visit refugee camps in his country that was devastated by war. They looked at him as a hero. He was committed to raising money to build schools in Sudan. He was seen as a hero in a country that had no access to schooling during its twenty year civil war. The world lost a special man when he passed away at the early age of 47. From the day he was born until his last day, he was what his name literally translates to: “special blessing.”

FIFA World Cup: Argentina vs Germany Sat. July 3 – 9AM – Green Point Stadium – ABC Diego Maradona’s team takes on the rascally Germans bright and early. It’s win or go home at this point. Argentina easily disposed of Mexico in the second round while controversy surrounds the German victory over the Brits. Watch Lionel Messi (Arg) the apparent heir to Maradona’s throne score the winning goal and end the German’s World Cup dreams.

MLB: White Sox vs Rangers Fri. July 2 – 7:05PM – Ballpark in Arlington – TXA-21 With Ozzie around there will be all sorts of fireworks bound to happen. The South Siders send staff ace Freddy Garcia to the mound. He has eight wins but is prone to giving up the long ball. Paul Konerko is putting up great numbers with 20 jacks and 56 RBIs so far.

MLB: Royals vs Angels Sun. July 4 – 7:15PM – Angel Stadium – ESPN Use your HTC Evo to watch the game or at least the highlights while waiting for the fireworks at KaBoom Town to go off. The Royals send out young Anthony Lerew to face the bats of the Angels. Joel Pineiro has won his last four starts for the Angels. This won’t bring back any late 70s memories when they play. Just drink PBR!

NASCAR Sat. July 3 – 6:30PM – Daytona International Speedway – TNT The Coke Zero 400 is the second race of the year held at Daytona International Speedway. There’s a lot of history behind this race. Back in 1984 Richard Petty won his 200th race as President Ronald Regan watched. Dale Earnhardt Jr. won here a mere five months after his father tragically passed away at this track. Who will win this week?

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said last Sunday that he will meet with Tennessee QB Vince Young in the next few weeks to discuss his recent misdemeanor assault citation at Dallas strip club Onyx. Goodell said that the first-time legal offender is unlikely to face game suspension even though Young is guilty of embarrassing the NFL with his spat caught on the strip club’s security camera. Hmmm…sounds like someone needs to stick to their guns a little harder. When Goodell suspended Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger in April, he said one of the reasons was Big Ben’s behavior “puts at risk the integrity and reputation of the NFL, NFL clubs or players.” When Goodell was asked whether Young did the same, Goodell replied, “I think you

The Rockin Super Chef of the Food Network and New York’s Southwestern Cuisine by: Richard S. Pollak

“The Traveling Gourmet”

You’re on the Food Network’s new television program; The Best Thing I Ever Ate, every single week! So tell us what’s REALLY the best thing you’ve ever eaten?

Bobby Flay: Richie Pollak from Philly, now you know, I am going to say the Philly Cheesesteak, I luv’ em. Tony Luke’s Philly Original with extra, extra onions and red cherry peppers on the side. Oh, I’m sorry, you’re in Dallas. Then just down the road from you is The Salt Lick in little Driftwood, Texas, and if you’re lucky you can get those huge beef ribs. They are not on the menu but I guess they know when I’m coming! You know, my wife, Stephanie March (Law and Order), is from Texas and she makes the meanest Texas brisket in a Pomegranate Chipotle Marinate, slow cooked, I mean, I have to wait for hours for her mom’s spicy potato salad.

Speaking of Texas, every one of your fans in Texas wants to know how the Irish boy from the boroughs became New York’s “Southwestern Cuisine King”!

BF: I was truly lucky. I had the opportunity to run my first restaurant and my partner gave me the opportunity to do southwestern. The hottest, literally, concept to come to New York City.

Speaking of restaurants, you’re all over the place. Do you even really step in and cook any more with all you do? Opening restaurants, writing books, making kitchenware, being on television…

BF: You won’t believe the hours that I still spend in my restaurants running the line, making sure everything is perfect. It’s my name on every plate that my restaurants serve. So, let me ask you, have you ever eaten in any of my restaurants?

Yes, I have stood in line at Caesar’s for Mesa Grill to open for lunch, of course. I was, at first, in the wrong line. There were about 25 people at 11:25 in the morning in line to get your new book autographed at 2 p.m., I soon found out! The line into the restaurant also had over a dozen people waiting before the doors opened! I have also been to Mesa Grill in Atlantis in the Bahamas! Tell us about your most interesting experience while cooking on TV. I think I already know the answer!

BF: Of course, you do…Iron Chef, the first challenge in Japan. I get blown off my feet when I was shocked by a short circuit from my handheld mixer while standing in a puddle of water. Not fun, not fun at all!

Finally, what’s next for Bobby Flay?

BF: It’s just like I keep saying on my TV show, Throwdown! Everyone out there keep doing what you’re doing and I say, do it well. That’s what I’m all about and going to keep doing what I can keep doing well!

This family owned and operated establishment has been here for over 12 years. Awesome Italian dishes with affordable prices. Brick oven cooked pizzas, hand tossed with fresh ingredients prepared daily. Strong New York ties with New York style pizza by the slice. Guide to Good Eats

Heart of Dallas 12 Burgers and Taco

Buffalo Joe’s

Newly opened in North Dallas, 12 Burgers and Taco offers fresh hand made meals to order. The 12 Burger is a must have with everything on it. We also like the Devil’s Burger with Frank’s Red Hot Sauce and the Hawaiian Burger. The Angus Beef patties are never frozen and the fries are served fresh. Try the Kogi Taco, which is a spicy pork taco is served on your choice of a soft or crispy shell.

Sporting 10 HD plasma big screens, free wifi and all the big PPV fights and games Buffalo Joe’s has you covered. They also have a full bar and great drink specials. The half pounder is the burger of choice which is made with Angus beef and charbroiled to perfection. We also give a nod to the Dog Sandwich.

6006 Belt Line Road • Dallas (972) 239-4194 • www.12burgers.com

Angry Dog

2726 Commerce Street • Dallas (214) 741-4406 •www.angrydog.com

This is our favorite Deep Ellum spot for Good Eats. We like the fact that they have over 100 different bottled beers to choose from with more than 20 on tap. We also like their food. Try their “Superhot” wings while watching the game. The Spiedies is a must. It’s the Texas version of a Binghamton, New York classic. Marinated chunks of chicken or beef, grilled and served on an Italian roll. Plus, they have free parking during lunch hours.

3636 Frankford Road, Suite 390 • Dallas (214) 483-5225 • www.thebuffalojoes.com

Gators Mardi Gras

(The French Quarter in Texas)

2720 N. Stemmons Frwy. • Dallas (214) 634-9669 • www.mardigrasdallas.com

This classic Stemmons Towers establishment has a giant patio that is great for knocking back a few cold ones while enjoying some live music and entertainment. Their French Quarter sandwich is one of their best offerings. Grab one for lunch or dinner! We also like their Cajun Burger which has a hint of hickory-smoked flavor and pepper jack cheese. There’s never a dull moment when enjoying their $3 Gator Cocktails.

Nori Sushi

2212 W. Northwest Highway • Dallas (972) 993-7888 • www.mynorisushi.com

This is the only Sushi Bar in the metroplex that is open till 2am everyday that we know of. Check out their “buy 1, get 1 free” sushi lunch specials during the week. We like their happy hour drink specials. In addition to tasty sushi we recommend you try the savory Lemmon Pepper Chicken Wings and the Boo Koo Burger.

Northwest Point Bar & Grill Asian Mint

11617 N. Central Expressway Suite 135 • Dallas (214) 363-6655 • www.asianmint.com

Asian Mint offers a great selection of Asian dishes with a specialty in fresh flavors from Thailand and well known for having the best Pad Thai in town! They also serve great sushi with a nice selection of sake and specialty martinis. They have a sister location on Oak Lawn called The Mint with Happy Hour Specials!

2053 W. Northwest Highway • Dallas (972) 869-2477 • www.nwpointsdallas.com

They opened their doors back in 1985 and haven’t looked back. As their name indicates, they do have a full bar with great drink prices. However, their full kitchen serves some great dishes. We love the Point Burger from Hell. The special blend of spices, 8oz. patty, cheese, with jalapenos and habeneros is really spicy! They also have different daily lunch specials.

Roma’s Authentic Italian Cuisine

Thai Tanee

It’s a piece of Italy in North Dallas. Specializing in pizza and family recipes. Try the Chicken Charchofi with artichokes, garlic mushrooms, basil and sherry wine cream sauce. We also like the Shrimp Scampi and they have a nice selection of fresh salads. Don’t forget to bring your own wine.

This family owned restaurant is just minutes away from the Galleria and Valley View Malls. They serve up traditional Thai familystyle and vegetarian dishes with a friendly smile and attentive service. The inviting décor welcomes you for a pleasant dining experience. Their daily lunch specials are served with a crispy spring roll and your choice of soup or salad. Their Pad Kee Mow has bragging rights!

Sol’s Nieto Mexican Grill

5635 Alpha Road • Dallas (972) 960-1313 • www.thaitaneecafe.com

6434 E. Mockingbird Lane, Suite 101 • Dallas (214) 821-7911

When in the Lakewood area and looking for some Tex-Mex, go straight to Sol’s Nieto Mexican Grill. They have a nice patio to take advantage of when the weather is accommodating. In addition to the traditional fare of fajitas, we really like the Pollo Relleno. Take advantage of the salsa and chips as well as Mexican Beer Night!

Wai Wai Kitchen

4315 Lemmon Avenue • (214) 520-8868 3020 Mockingbird Lane • (214) 368-9494 www.waiwaikitchen.com

Stratos Greek Taverna

2907 W. Northwest Highway • Dallas (214) 352-3321 • www.clubstratos.com

The folks at Stratos have proudly been serving Dallas for nearly a decade. They just added their roof top patio and are pet friendly. We are partial to their gyros and calamari. We suggest you try the Grecian God Plate with your choice of two Souvlakis (Pork, Chicken, Vegetable, Steak or Shrimp Scampi). It is served with two Dolmathes, rice and vegetables.

Wai Wai literally means “really quick” in Thai. In English that means that your meal will be served in 10 minutes or less. The ambiance is very upbeat and modern. Their Tulip Dumplings is a nice appetizer and the Drunken Noodles will fill you up. Their prized gem though is their Chicken Basil Stir Fry. They also serve Sushi very affordably.

West End Pub

1801 North Lamar Street • Dallas (214) 748-5711 • www.westendpubdallas.net

The neighborhood pub without a neighborhood has been a Dallas tradition for 22 years. In addition to their patio (we think the best one in downtown) and great craft beer selections, the West End Pub’s kitchen serves up Good Eats til 1am. They have several different burgers, salads and sandwiches to choose from. We fully endorse the Pub Pie which consists of fresh vegetables, chunks of lean beef, special creamy brown gravy and topped with a golden brown puff pastry crust.

Guide to Good Eats

Uptown/McKinney Arcodoro & Pomodoro

Javier’s Gourmet Meicano

This restaurant provides some of the best cuisine this side of Sicily from Chef Efisio Farris Sardinian’s personal recipe book. While they may be on the pricey side at night your best bet is the Power Lunch menu. This includes many deals too good to pass up: one of three antipastos and one of four entrees for a buck or two more than most entrees would cost on their own.

Forget Tex-Mex, the menu is pure, authentic Mexican. There isn’t a taco on the menu but don’t worry, it all tastes delicious. There are few places in DFW that call pull off true Mexican cuisine and this is near the top of the list. We recommend the Cantiflas. A cheese covered filet smothered in a chipotle sauce, this is always a favorite.

100 Crescent Court, Suite 140 • Dallas (214) 871-1924 • www.arcodoro.com

Sushi On McKinney

4438 McKinney Avenue • Dallas (214) 443-0605 • www.sushionmckinney.com

This casual Japanese café has been a local sushi icon since 1987. A great place for those new to the sushi scene. The Spicy Pressed Sushi stands out as does their Rainbow Roll and Jalapeno Roll. The bento lunch boxes over deliver. The ambiance is really nice and relaxed. Check out their Japanese fusion menu for a new experience.

Frankie’s Sports Bar

3227 McKinney Avenue • (214) 999-8932 2516 S. Stemmons Freeway • (214) 488-1100 www.frankiesbar.com

From a humble, local haunt to the finest sports bar in Uptown, Frankie’s offers over and above bar food according to the USA Today, “a menu on steroids”. Their Ballpark Nachos are massive and we like the Frito Bandito Pie (just like when we were kids). The pizza at Frankie’s is thin and crispy. You can order a specialty pie or build your own. By the way, we agree that you should forego the bottle service and stick with the bucket service!

Hook Line & Sinker

3103 Lemmon Avenue • Dallas (214) 965-0707

This is a great little place for quick, cheap, and fresh seafood in Dallas. They have an array of fried dishes which are great, but go for one of the grilled fish fillets (usually trout) with vegetables. This is a laid back place with a friendly and accommodating staff and sensible prices.

Wild About Harry’s

3113 Knox St • Dallas (214) 520-3113 • www.wildaboutharrys.com

Where else can you find a cool owner that hangs out with you as you order some delicious hot dogs? This place is about having a good time and eating good food and being a part of something that has been around for a long while. The locals love this place with good reason and we think everyone in Dallas should try these legendary hot dogs.

June 30 - July 6, 2010 13

1st & 10

The Libertine

One of the oldest sports bars in Lakewood, 1st and 10 is not only “your sports headquarters” but also a great venue when hunger strikes! We like their 1st & 10 Burger. It’s 13 ounces of freshly ground beef formed into a handmade patty cooked to order. Their ribs are the best kept secret in DFW. They fall off the bone and taste so good, you don’t even need sauce.

Need some new beer drinkin’ glasses in your cupboard? Every Thursday night is Pint Night at the Libertine. Buy the featured beer and keep the logo glass they serve it to you in. Every week there’s a new glass! You must try the flat-iron steak here. It will surprise you in terms of seasoning and juiciness and price and it’s better than the offerings of some steakhouses.

Desperados

4418 Greenville Avenue • (214) 363-1850 3443 W. Campbell Road • (972) 530-8886 www.desperadosrestaurant.com

“If you know Dallas, you know Desperados.” This is a true statement to many locals when it comes to this restaurant. Desperados has been serving its family recipes since 1976 and its very loyal entourage will passionately tell you that Desperados is one of Dallas’ best. With an essence as rich in taste as it is tradition Desperados has indeed achieved its landmark status. We recommend you have the Desperado Tacos. They’re crispy flour tacos with melted jack cheese and your choice of beef or chicken fajita meat. These “Juan and only” tacos rule.

The Grape

2808 Greenville Ave • Dallas (214) 828-1981 • www.thegraperestaurant.com

A great date place, the intimate restaurant seats a few dozen at best. Start with the baked Brie and honey spread on crusty bread and then share the Pork Osso Buco. If you go for happy hour, Mon-Fri 4:30-7 p.m., the mini brat burgers will probably convince you to come back for more.

Kostas Café

Various Metroplex Locations www.kostascafe.com

They have three locations but our favorite one is still the Greenville Avenue location. The quaint atmosphere is very inviting and gives you that “at home” feeling. The waitstaff are friendly and attentive but not intrusive by any means. The Spanakopita is delicious and the Flaming Saganaki will have you shouting “Opa!”

Ozona Grill

4615 Greenville Avenue • Dallas (214) 265-9105 • www.ozonagrill.com

Two words: Tex-Mex Monday! Not only are their potent margaritas just $2, but if you buy 1 Mexican platter, you get a 2nd Mexican Platter half off. Blitz staffers recommend the handmade pork tamales covered in chili and the shrimp relleno doused in queso.

Tapioca Express

310 Terrace Drive, Suite B • Richardson (972) 238-8881

In the mood for a traditional Chinese meal and refreshment? Look no further than Tapioca Express. Their Pai Gu Fan (fried pork chop with rice) and Niu Rou Mian (beef noodle soup) are a nice introduction to Chinese cuisine. Sizeable portions with lots of flavor. Try the Pearl Milk Tea to see what you’ve been missing.

Guide to Good Eats

Plano/Frisco Centro Tex-Mex

Japan House

Kenny’s Burger Joint

The newest addition to Austin Ranch is an upscale Tex-Mex establishment that specializes in serving Tapas and good times. We recommend the Centro Filet. The 12 oz. steak is served with seasoned vegetables, garlic mashed potatoes and a side salad. Try their tacos. With four offerings to choose from, you can’t go wrong. They have a fully stocked bar with tequilas for all types of palates and Mexican beers to match. Centro offers Bacardi, Grey Goose, Corzo and Cazadores from the tap at five degrees.

As soon as you step in you are greeted by a smiling hostess. The spacious building accommodates the largest of parties. Their massive buffet offers a variety of dishes ranging from Sushi to Shabu Shabu (hot pot) to teppanyaki to fresh seaood. They even offer sashimi! Their chefs use the finest ingredients and prepare their cuisine daily.

The Mushroom Burger is a must, piled high with Brie and sautéed mushrooms. The Steak Bomb is a favorite among our staffers. The knife-n-fork sandwich is served on a hoagie and heaped up with shaved ribeye and white American cheese. On Sundays, Kenny’s Famous Ribs are just a buck a piece. End with an “Adult” Milkshake, such as the Attitude Changer--a mixture of Stoli Vanilla, Oreos and vanilla ice cream.

Main Street Bistro and Bakery 3600 Shire Blvd, Ste 160 • Richardson (972) 578-0294 • www.themainbakery.com

For breakfast, try the omelettes. For lunch, go with the Brie, Prosciutto and Pear Panini. For dinner, the grilled

scallops, the salmon and the filet mignon all come with their melt-inyour-mouth mashed potatoes. If the European atmosphere gets you in the French mood, try the chocolate almond croissant. Of course, it is Texas-sized.

Napoli’s Pizza

4101 East Park Boulevard • Plano (972) 516-9663 • www.napolispizza.net

This BYOB Italian Restaurant is a favorite among locals, who exchange a “howdy” or “hello” as familiar faces frequently come and go for take-out or a sit down with the family. Some dishes you’ll often hear ordered: the house salad with zesty tomato dressing, the calzone, the chicken parm sub and, of course, the pizza. One slice will satisfy you, but you’ll probably have at least two.

Anejos House of Tequila

9159 Grapevine Hwy • North Richland Hills (817) 485-9900 • www.anejohot.com

This area finally gets a legit upscale Tex-Mex restaurant with a great outdoor bar featuring nightly drink specials. Don’t miss Twisted Tuesdays and make sure you have a “DD” before ordering your second swirl. If you are not in the mood for traditional fare, try the fall off the bone spareribs. They are greatness!

Broaster Chicken

3529 Heritage Trace Pkw, Suite 159 • Ft. Worth (817) 741-8899 • www.broastertx.com

When heading out west, make sure to stop by this venue for some great chicken. It’s healthier than most places since they prepare everything via the pressure fryer. In other words, the

Grapevine/Mid-Cities/Southlake chicken is more tender, juicier and flavorful than conventionally fried chicken. We’re big fans of the Popcorn Chicken and their wings (five flavors to choose from). Their Mac & Cheese will take you back to your childhood.

City Hall Restaurant

201 Town Center Lane • Keller (817) 741-2433 • www.cityhallarthouse.com

This upscale American fare restaurant looks like a Dallas restaurant on the inside and is the first to be located in the Keller Arthouse. A great menu with “can’t miss” items like the pan-seared scallops. One of the best wine lists in the area. Don’t miss the best cornbread in Texas!

Grill 1709

1632 Keller Pkwy • Keller (817) 431-1889 • www.grill-1709.com

This is a great get-away from the chain restaurants that dominate this area. Try the pork chop; it is melt-in-yourmouth delicious. The Grill 1709 burger is Kobe and worth a try. Good happy hour specials each weeknight and live weekend entertainment has been moved to an outdoor patio.

Rockfish Seafood Grill

228 State Street • Southlake (817) 442-0130 • www.rockfish.com

This local favorite with a loyal following is located in the heart of Southlake Town Square. Seafood lovers can pick a fish and the chef will cook it to your specs with a topping of your choice and two sides. Stop by the bar and ask Abbey for a special margarita or bloody mary.

Arlington/Ft. Worth Bobby V’s Sports Gallery Cafe 4301 S. Bowen Rd • Arlington (817) 467-9922 • www.bobbyvsports.com

If you are a sports fan who just happens to like burgers and fries, it would be hard to top former Texas Rangers manager Bobby Valentine’s south Arlington sports-themed restaurant. You can dine in an actual boxing ring among 20 TVs that are all tuned to sports. The menu has a wide variety with something for everybody.

Campo Verde

2918 W. Pioneer Parkway • Arlington (817) 275-7003

Camp Verde could be perceived as a typical Tex-Mex place, until you arrive that is. The decor is over-the-top crazy with lights all over. There used to be one in west Fort Worth near Ridgmar

Mall (no more), but we enjoy the chips and salsa so much that we’ll make the trek over to west Arlington. The Chicken Flautas are really good, and we love their rice. We imagine if Joe T’s was an indoor restaurant, it would be a lot like this one.

Joe T. Garcia’s

2201 N Commerce Street • Fort Worth (817) 626-4356 • www.joets.com

This Fort Worth institution is a destination restaurant, even if you only live five minutes away. Imagine a place where you have to wait in line (even if it’s a Sunday evening at 8:00pm!) to eat inside a lush tropical garden that feels like you have been transported off to a resort in Mexico. Then make it a reality as you head to Joe T’s, just north of downtown Fort Worth. Just a friendly reminder: CASH ONLY.

Midori Sushi

14113 Trinity Boulevard, Ste. 201 • Ft. Worth (817) 868-1414 4020 N. MacArthur Boulevard, Suite 114 • Irving (972) 887-1818

Great lunch buffet with a wide selection (32 kinds) of items to choose from fried rice to Rainbow Rolls. We feel that the fresh made rolls and chef specials will make you want more. For dinner, you should try the authentic chef specials such as the Ranger Roll, Sushi Burrito, and the Spicy Tuna Tower. These will indulge your senses and save your wallet!

Olenjack’s Grille

770 Road To Six Flags, Suite E • Arlington (817) 226-2600 • www.olenjacksgrille.com

Located in an ocean of chain restaurants in North Arlington’s Lincoln Square, Olenjack’s Grille is an independent

spot from Execuitive Chef-owner Brian Olenjack. While we always head back for the chicken fried steak, we must mention that the service is great. Oh by the way, we spotted Jerry Jones here a few times during construction of Cowboys Stadium.

Outlaw’s Bar-B-Que & Grill 2334 S. Belt Line Road • Grand Prairie (972) 263-6063 • www.outlawsbbq.com

Head over to this family friendly establishment before the Rangers or AirHogs game for some Texas Style Ribs. They’re slowly smoked with hickory wood and taste great. We also like the brisket and the chopped sandwiches. Compliment your meal with a baked potato and slaw. The Country Breakfast is a good deal, too. They have a drive-thru if your in a hurry.

Denton County Independent Hamburger Company 113 W. Hickory Street • (940) 383-1022 715 Sunset Street • (940) 382-3037

“Spirits and Such”

Well, it’s the Fourth of July, so let’s talk about American…whiskeys that is. While researching information for this column, I discovered several interesting facts. I hope you will find them interesting, too, and somewhat humorous. There are several stories as to who invented American whiskey and none can be verified. It is pretty much agreed that somewhere in the late 18th century, people in the Allegheny Mountain Range and around the vast area known as Bourbon County, Virginia (which included most of present day Kentucky), began using left over corn and rye to distill new types of whiskey. The demand for whiskey in remote areas made the distillers look at the Ohio River as a way to ship this new cash crop. The oak barrels that carried the whiskey were charred to help seal the wood and keep the whiskey from being absorbed into the wood. The whiskey aged on the journey to its new customer causing the clear liquid to become a deep caramel color and aging the

harsh alcohol to a mellow flavor. Old Bourbon County being the main shipping point, the barrels were stamped with “Old Bourbon” for its point of origin and soon all “whiskey” shipped from this area became known as “Bourbon.” I know it will be hard for you to believe that the U.S. might need money to pay for a war it had gotten itself into (the little one with England in 1776), so they began looking for something to tax. Well, tea was out, so Congress looked at whiskey for its first “Sin Tax.” This didn’t settle too well in Pennsylvania where some folks staged the Whiskey Rebellion by burning down the tax collector’s house and hanging a few people. So, old George himself led some 13,000 troops to the heart of America to squelch the uprising. The tax removed most of the profit from the new cash crop, so whiskey began being produced almost exclusively in the area of western Virginia (Kentucky) that was not in the control of the United States. All that just to get to why most of the whiskey distilleries are in Kentucky and Tennessee. I’m already about out of space, so let’s cut straight to the two main types of American whiskey: Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey. I know we make “rye whiskey” with 51% rye and “corn whiskey” with 70% corn, but over 90% of American whiskey falls into the “Sour Mash” category.

In 1964, Congress recognized Bourbon Whiskey as a “distinctive product of the United States”, i.e. nobody else better make it. It set standards such as 51% corn (most distilleries use around 90%), no added color or flavors and aged only in new oak barrels. One thing not mentioned, but thought by many including me, was that all Bourbon must be made in Bourbon County Kentucky. Nope…it just has to be made in the U.S. There are seven operating distilleries outside Kentucky. All Bourbons and Tennessee whiskeys use the “Sour Mash” method of distillation where a “backset” or malt developed in a previous distillation is cooked into the final brew. Bourbon goes directly into the oak casks for aging for at least two years, while Tennessee Whiskey goes through one more step. It goes through the “Lincoln County Process” and is filtered through a layer of sweet Maple charcoal adding a distinctive “sweet” flavor. This can add ten days to the process before going into new charred Tennessee Pine barrels for aging. Twenty-two Bourbon and two Tennessee whiskey distilleries representing 200 brands will help make the Fourth a little harder to remember. Please drink responsibly. TOP 10 WEIRD (BUT YUMMY) FOOD COMBOS I’ve personally never tried corn with mayo, and I’m not a fan of watermelon with salt, but I do have some unusual food combinations that are pretty tasty. Feel free to borrow these tried and true recipes. 10. Steak & Ketchup: I ordered my steak with ketchup for years until I discovered A-1 sauce. 9. Tuna & Bell Peppers: The peppers add a spicy crunch to the salty tooner. 8. Bacon & Guacamole: Crispy bacon goes well with just about anything. Except cookies. I can’t imagine a bacon chip cookie being all that great. 7. Carrots & Brown Mustard: A tangy, healthy snack. 6. Grilled Cheese & Jalapenos: Jalapenos make just about everything better. 5. Toast & Yogurt: No crusts, of course. 4. Pizza & Italian Dressing: Ranch is okay, but the vinegar-y taste of Italian goes better with the Parmesan cheese. 3. Ice Cream & Jelly: Preserves work best...I guess it’s similar to the fruit topping. 2. Popcorn & Tobasco: I used to eat this for dinner when I was a bartender. 1. Fritos & Lemon Juice: Try it, and you’ll love it. Just remember this list when Fritos comes out with a Lemon/ Lime flavor!

Apparently they put a huge wedding ring over it and it stopped putting out! Amazing how that works! The Farm Boy A Missouri farmer in his pickup drove to a neighbor’s and knocked at the door. A boy, about 9, opened the door. “Is your Dad home?” “No sir. He isn’t; he went to town.” “Well, is your Mother here?” “No sir, she went to town with Dad.” “How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?” “No sir, He went with Mom and Dad.” “Well,” said the rancher uncomfortably, “I really wanted to talk to your Dad. It’s about your brother Howard getting my daughter, Suzie, pregnant.”‘ The boy thought for a moment. “You would have to talk to Dad about that. I know he charges $500 for the bull and $50 for the hog, but I don’t know how much he charges for Howard.”

Unsolicited Advice

A few months ago, I broke up with my girlfriend of over two years. It was pretty amicable; one of those rare cases of two people wanting different things out of life but separating without any fights. Break-ups are tough, but it’s all a process. I’m lucky that mine was tough but right, but that’s really not what is the most annoying. It’s the advice…all the damn advice.

You know what I’m talking about. Everyone knows what I’m talking about. When your friend’s relationship ends, the first thing to do is to jump to their side, brandishing cliched one-liners that are meant in a mix of good intentions and awkwardness. I’m lucky. My break-up was a good one. We are still friends, but I’ve been through tons of relationships that ended in disaster. I also have been seen plenty of friends go through rough spots. I, too, have been victim of the stupid advice giving. I’m fine, but this whole experience makes me realize how lame most of what people offer as advice actually is. It’s crap. It’s pathetic and it makes people sound pretty dumb.

Here are some examples: “It’s not your fault” - Well, uh, whose fault is it then? There are two people in a relationship and if one person doesn’t like the other because they do not live up to their qualifications, I’m pretty sure it’s your fault. “There is more fish in the sea” - Yeah, that’s true. But the thing about fish is that you can not have sex with fish. There are a lot of people in the world. You will also probably not have sex with them either. “Things happened for a reason” - You got dumped because you are one or more of the following: 1. unattractive, 2. poor, 3. fat, 4. annoying, 5. lazy, 6. an a-hole, 7. unfunny, 8. stupid.... There are countless others, but the reason you were dumped was basically because you just aren’t right for the person. That is the reason.

My Path to

Enlightenment Author’s Note: Names have not been changed in order to convict the guilty and give due credit to the innocent.

hen I got dumped, I didn’t have the luxury of jetting off to India to find enlightenment like the waspy, privileged author of “Eat, Pray, Love.” Instead, I moved onto the porch with a leaky roof at my parent’s and got on food stamps. The town I grew up in has one stop light, 27 churches, two grocery stores and two turn lanes, one of which is for a church and not the fire station next door, much to the eternal fulminations of my mother. I can only respond, “What do they need a fire station for when they have Jesus?” When people in the college town nearby complain about how lacking in culture it is, I

down to my mom’s hairy armpits and my dad’s 8-inch beard. But they didn’t start out that way. They came from middle class suburbia with the idealistic dream of living off the land and getting back to nature, which they eventually found in West Virginia. They got back to nature and lived off the land, if you call that being on welfare and raising four kids in a crudely renovated one-room chicken house with no electricity or running water. Vancouver didn’t know what they were missing. So my dad finally had enough of it and moved us to a small redneck Bible-thumping town in North Central Florida. We lived on a lake in a big house with five bedrooms, and aside from the kids at school calling me the spawn of Satan because I was Jewish, my childhood was nothing to complain about. My dad is Irish, my mom Jewish from German de-

want to pour their watered-down iced coffee over their heads. Lacking in culture? Really? I come from a place where lighting ticks on fire and watching them explode is a major form of entertainment, second to drinking beer and swatting mosquitoes, so please stop whining. If it weren’t for the university, their uncultured, boring town would still be a hog farm, which is basically what my hometown consists of: farm animals, churches and lots of bugs. Ah, the life... I almost ended up in Vancouver, but when my parents turned up at the border looking like the Joad family from “Grapes of Wrath,” complete with a beat up jalopy hauling farm equipment, they were turned away. Apparently, in the seventies, Canada only wanted doctors and lawyers, or, at the very least, people who showered and shaved regularly, which were not my parents. They were dirty hillbilly-hippies right

scent, so I had a typical Irish upbringing complete with random beatings and scarce food, but minus the religion and alcoholic dad, plus a Jewish mom and warm weather year round. We drove rusty jalopies, wore scrappy rags and never had enough food to go around, which is why people were surprised when they saw our nice suburban house. At dinnertime, with my two older brothers and sister, it was very similar to a pack of wolves dismembering a carcass, except in this case, it was vegetables and rice since we could rarely afford meat. Even now, when I eat with my siblings, especially when we’re hungry, it’s a savage free-for-all. A slow eater would starve in this family. Back on the leaky-roofed porch with my dejected heart and despite the man fatale being a chain-smoking workaholic, I was still deeply in love. Sometimes love can be so illogical.

W

Look, I know it sucks to be dumped, but people have got to get over it themselves. No stupid cliché is going to make anyone feel better. Suck it up and move on, kids. Stop with the one-liners and just pass the beers. I’m serious, pass me the beer.
