QUOTE OF THE WEEK “Football is a game of repetition, mental and physical. You may try to articulate it a little different, but it’s the same thing: Get better players, make fewer mistakes, and drill the fundamentals into your players’ heads.” – Barry Switzer

An Arkansas man got a frightening look at frontier justice when he passed out with a display noose around his head during a trip to a Wild West-themed Kansas museum, officials said. Police in Dodge City, Kansas, have declined to release the name of the 69-year-old visitor from Parks, Arkansas. They said he lost consciousness Wednesday and slumped in the “Hanging Tree” noose display at the Boot Hill Museum. Museum director Lara Brehm said museum staff and two women he was with helped remove the man from the noose, and that he regained consciousness before being taken to a hospital. The noose usually hangs 15 feet in the air, and the museum doesn’t know how it came to be hanging low enough for a visitor to reach it, Brehm said. It was hanging in its proper place when the museum closed the night before the incident, she said. “From what we understand he was using

it as a photo opportunity,” Brehm said. “We don’t know for sure how it came to be where anybody could reach it.” Brehm said it was unclear why the man passed out and that his feet remained on the ground. “It was not a hanging in the sense that we use that word,” she said. Brehm said the man remained in stable condition Thursday at a Wichita hospital. She said he had pre-existing conditions that warranted the move to Wichita. The noose had been hanging where it was since the museum opened 63 years ago without incident, Brehm said. It has been taken down, and officials had not decided another would be put back up. “We’ll make the appropriate decision when we figure out what happened,” she said.

New Hampshire Woman Rescued From Swamp

Peru Thieves Nab Mayor’s Dad’s Skull A 60-year-old New Hampshire woman who Ahead Of Vote was found by police in a heavily wooded swamp on Tuesday said her ordeal began over the weekend and said her history of sleepwalking might explain it. Ellin Vincenti of Tuftonboro told WMUR-TV on Wednesday that she remembers saying goodnight to her husband Saturday and said she woke up Sunday to find herself alone in her Jeep, parked on a wooded path in the nearby town of Moutonborough. She said she started walking and ended up on a small piece of land surrounded by the swamp. Vincenti told the TV station she spent two nights there, occasionally yelling for help until nearby resident Beverly Willey heard the yells and called police.

Foes of a small-town mayor in Peru said they have dug up the skull of his late father and won’t give it back unless he drops out of next month’s election. Police in San Cristobal said unknown thieves unearthed the remains of Juan Vizcarra Quispe, who died in 1978. His bones were found strewn about the cemetery, but his skull is missing. Mayor Rogelio Vizcarra said he received a text message offering to return the skull if he withdraws his bid for re-election Oct. 3, but he still plans to run. San Cristobal police officer Leonardo Castro said authorities are investigating Vizcarra’s political opponents. Castro said Thursday that the theft violates a law against “offending the memory of the dead,” punishable by two years in prison.

THIS DOG SHOULD’VE “HEADED” IN THE OTHER DIRECTION

September 24, 2010, Aztec, New Mexico: 32-year-old Teddy Sexton, was arrested on animal cruelty charges after his two children watched him chainsaw the head off their pet pit bull. Sexton swore he’d first tried his best to remove the animal’s front end with a kitchen knife, but found that too difficult.

THIS MEOW-MIX WAS A MESS

Animal control authorities in Austin, Texas, September 2010, felt they’d discovered their worst case of animal neglect, ever. Inside a local “pet provider’s” apartment kitchen, they found an unplugged refrigerator, containing 23 dead and decomposing cats. These authorities also removed another 52 living cats, all trying to survive inside that apartment.

SHE RECEIVED A DIFFERENT KIND OF “ARM-REST”

Congratulations to Teresa Lewis, 41, widower of husband Julian Clifton Lewis Jr. She finally made a name for herself. But, what made her famous began in October 2002, when she hired, and had sex with two men, so they would murder her husband and stepson… so she could collect $250,000 in life insurance. She died by lethal injection September 23, 2010, 9:13 p.m., becoming the first woman to be legally executed in the U.S. since 2005. (Of more than 1,200 legal executions since 1976, only 11 have been women.)

HOLLYWOOD PROFILE with Michael Douglas

by: Vivian Fullerlove “Entertainment’s Real Critic”

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps is one of the most anticipated and longest awaited sequels I can remember. Michael Douglas’ Gordon Gekko is back and as dynamic as ever! The story picks up some two decades later with Gekko emerging from a lengthy prison stint where he finds himself on the outside of a world he once dominated. Looking to repair his damaged relationship with his daughter Winnie, Gekko forms an alliance with her fiancé Jacob, played by Shia LaBeouf. But can Jacob and Winnie really trust the ex-financial titan whose relentless efforts to redefine himself in a different era have unexpected consequences. Michael Douglas talks about the movie and his character’s iconic status.

How has Gordon Gekko changed since we last saw him? By 22 years and the loss of a lot of money–you remember in the last picture he got busted. He got out [of jail] about 2001 without any money. He can’t trade. He’s lost his son due to a drug overdose while he was in jail. Now he’s trying to start over, but his only daughter isn’t talking to him. So as high as we saw Gordon in ‘87, that’s how low he starts out in this picture.

Did he learn anything from his mistakes? He has certainly learned a lot of lessons and had a lot of time to think while he was in jail. He can see things more clearly in 2007, which is when the movie starts. He’s working very hard on a book that he’s done that’s pretty negative and bearish in its take on what’s happening

in the world; in particular on how banks have begun to trade hedge funds, taking risks with their customer’s money. A lot of people take umbrage with what he’s saying, but we’ll see if he turns out to be right or not.

Did you ever think all those years ago that Gordon Gekko would become this iconic character that people would still be talking about and excited to see again today? I think it’s a reflection of this great villain that Stan Weiser and Oliver Stone created the first time around. They gave him some great dialogue and memorable lines. He became sort of a cult hero within the banking community and carried on in a life much, much longer than I had ever anticipated. And I thought Oliver really caught the tone of the time of ‘86 and ‘87 with the rocking and rolling on Wall Street. Of any part I’ve played, people come up to me the most about Gordon. They liked Gordon a lot and got a kick out of him, which was always a surprise to us because he was such a bad guy.

What was it like working with Oliver Stone again? Oliver is a tough guy who doesn’t demand more from you than he would demand from himself. He pushes you and I’m very grateful for it. It’s always a good ride with Oliver. You just don’t always know which way he is going to turn. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps opened nationwide last week and is rated PG-13.

The Town

It’s a commonly accepted and unspoken standard among movie goers that fall is the time where big budget summer blockbusters filled with action, superheroes, CGI animated 3D squirrels and massive explosions are gradually replaced by intense, gritty, mindbending thrillers and more seriously themed dramas. The Town eases us into the fall movie season by giving us a good mix of the action that summer has us accustomed to along with dark crime drama and providing enough of a thrill to keep your attention for its two hour running time. The Town, “the bank robbery capital of America”, is an abbreviation for Charlestown a small community outside of Boston. Among those criminals is Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck). The film begins with a daring and well-executed robbery by MacRay and his crew in which they make a hostage of a bank manager named Claire (Rebecca Hall). After the robbery’s success, they let the film’s leading lady go free, but MacRay never truly lets her go and begins pursuing a romantic relationship with her against his headstrong right-hand man, James Coughlin’s (Jeremy Renner) wishes. The majority of the film is spent watching MacRay’s crew plan and flawlessly execute robberies, which lead up to the “last big job.” While the thrill of watching Special Agent Adam Frawley (Jon Hamm) pull out all the stops trying to catch MacRay and his

crew is very entertaining, it alone is not what makes this movie good. The writers do an excellent job of making us see the loyalty and camaraderie among a group of thieves. The bond between James, Doug and the rest of their crew is conveyed so well that by the time you get around to the movie’s exhilarating climax, you will be rooting for the bad guys to pull off the escape of the century. The Town definitely gives you enough action to keep you interested, but it’s not the action that summer flicks about similar subjects such as, Takers, gave you. The Town is filled with very dark, intimate fight scenes that fans of classic crime dramas have come to expect and love. The film successfully makes you feel like a part of the characters’ lives, giving insight into their past, sharing their dreams for the future, exposing their vices and revealing their love for their families. If there was any doubt about Ben Affleck’s abilities, this movie should quiet the naysayers. He pulls of a trifecta that not many people can accomplish by delivering a great product as an actor, writer and director. He does an excellent job at depicting the underworld of Boston and makes us feel attached to Doug MacRay and his crew. The Town is a great start to the fall movie season, one of the best films of the year, and definitely worth your time if you’re looking for a movie to see this weekend.

t was 1991. I was a budding adolescent attending junior high school in a new city. In my previous school, I had plenty of friends, things to do, and an identity. That all changed pretty quickly with a move to a new house in a new district. Immediately I found myself an outcast and a loner in what was a pretty big change in my social environment. So what did I end up doing? Duh. I discovered metal. Yep. I was that angry kid wearing black jeans, combat boots and Pantera shirts. You know, that kid in the back of the class that you really didn’t want to talk to? Maybe because I scared you or maybe just because you thought I was a weirdo…either way, you left me alone. I came home every day and went straight to my room to practice guitar and to tune into Z-Rock (the best radio station Dallas ever had) and soon, I heard of my dream come true. Three bands would be touring together…in what would be branded, “Clash of the Titans” – Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer. This was something that would probably only come around once in a lifetime. Alas, my mom was very protective of me and despite my gritty exterior, I was actually one of the best kids you’d come across. So, I was forbidden to go, as I was surely to be harmed and perhaps even enticed to join a cult of some sort. I was crushed. The years went by and I would think back to this epic concert and how I would NEVER get a chance to see this lineup again. Especially with what many thought was the “death” of thrash metal. Lucky for

me, the teens of today got into their dad’s CD collections and decided thrash was cool again…and my chance came again. Here I am, 20 years later and still going on 13, ready to get into my DeLorean, fire up my flux capacitor and get ready to get metal thrashing mad…at 88 miles per hour. I would not even need the 1.21 jigawatts of power, only a ticket to the Superpages.com Center. This is the VERY place that this concert kicked off in 1991. So with my luck I thought it’d be full of “new” stuff that I like, but you know…I want to hear the classics. Well, I got my wish. Anthrax had brought original front man, Joey Belladonna, and busted out mostly old tunes. Megadeth came on stage, sounding better than I’ve heard them since 1997 and played their critically acclaimed Rust In Peace album start to finish. This is the album they played on the original tour. Then the mighty Slayer took stage and followed suite by playing their masterpiece from the same era, Seasons in the Abyss in its entirety. I went home exhausted, sweaty, and hoarse. Unfortunately, I woke up the next morning with the aching bones of a 30 something, instead of the 13 year old that I thought I was for one night. Still, it was a metal dream come true.

RANGERS:News

Rangers Win AL West!!! “IT’S TIME”, has been the Rangers motto all season long and after last Saturday’s win over Oakland it took on a whole new meaning. With the 4-3 win over the A’s they clinched the division and earned a spot in the playoffs for the first time in eleven years. Time to party like it’s 1999! As a long time fan and having attended many games over the years this was a very special day. In fact after years of frustration as a fan, I started to believe and accept this would never happen. Saturday was almost surreal as I watched the players pop champagne, jump up and down like kids with goggles on and put on AL West Champion shirts & caps. I remember back in February listening to Ron Washington speak at Fanfest. He said it’s about winning championships and I for some reason believed him. Right before the season began his admitted drug use last season seemed like it was a sign for another disappointing season. Now, that is not only an afterthought but he very well could and should be named Manager of the Year. The best moment of the win Saturday had to be Michael Young receiving a hug from every single player moments after the win. His teammates were happy for the guy

who has been a Ranger since 2000. He has endured position changes and has never been to the playoffs in his career. This season he became the all-time hits leader for Wash deserves a lot of credit! the Rangers and has always been a class act. His hard work and dedication has finally paid off. Josh Hamilton to me is the best player in baseball. He leads all of baseball in batting with an amazing .362 batting average. He is a true five tool player which is a player who excels at hitting for average, hits for power, can run the bases with speed, has a great arm, and is an excellent defender. This is the final week of the regular season. These games now mean nothing since the Rangers are now playoff bound.

TCU vs. Colorado State

Sat. Oct. 2 – 1PM – Hughes Stadium – The Mtn. HD Jeremy Kerley had a career high 234 all-purpose yards, lifting No. 4 TCU to a 41-24 victory over longtime rival SMU on Friday night before a Ford Stadium record crowd of 35,481. Playing on the road for the first time this season, the Horned Frogs were in a bit of trouble when the Mustangs built a 17-14 lead early in the third quarter. Then Kerley returned the ensuing kickoff 83 yards and TCU was back in control. The Horned Frogs (4-0) won their seventh straight road game, although this was far from a hostile environment with about a quarter of that record crowd wearing TCU purple. The Frogs beat the Mustangs for the 10th time in 11 meetings. The Horned Frogs begin Mountain West conference play this weekend on the road against Colorado State. The Rams are 1-3 with their only win coming last week against Idaho 36-34. In last year’s meeting, Colorado State scored the first 6 points of the game before TCU scored 44 unanswered points in a 44-6 trouncing of the Rams.

SMU vs. Rice

Sat. Oct. 2 – 6PM – Rice Stadium The Iron Skillet started out to be a good game. SMU only trailed then #4 TCU 14-10 at halftime. They haven’t won against a top 25 team since 2005 and ironically it was the Horned Frogs who they beat. In the first minute of the second half Sterling Moore intercepted Andy Dalton and returned it to the one yard line. The home crowd went nuts when SMU took a 17-14 lead on a one yard pass. That was the last thing they had to cheer about as they ended up losing 41-24. This week, they play in Houston against Rice. The Owls are coming off a 30-13 loss to Baylor. They are 1-3 on the season and their only win was at North Texas. Rice is going to have a hard time moving the ball. They only average 93 yards per game rushing and their quarterback Nick Fanuzzi has only one touchdown. Kyle Padron should have a big game passing. SMU will put up points and should have no problem in this one.

by: Craig Smith – “Sportsologist”

LA-Lafayette vs. UNT

Sat. Oct. 2 – 6:30PM – Fouts Stadium North Texas hobbled into last week’s game at Florida Atlantic. The Mean Green was a winless team with numerous key injuries. They started Riley Dodge, who is the third different quarterback of the season. The result was a 21-17 win in their first conference game of the season. Dodge threw for 146 yards and rushed for 67. James Hamilton led the team with122 yards rushing and had a 32 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. This week they are back home against Louisiana-Lafayette and look to go 2-0 in conference play. The Ragin’ Cajuns lost last week to Middle Tennessee 34-14. They are a below average team on both sides of the ball. This is the game where I think North Texas gets this season turned around. Dodge settles back into a position he is all too familiar with against a team giving up 37.7 points a game. The offense will be based on a steady running attack but if Dodge gets in a groove he can put up big numbers in this one. I think they win the game by two touchdowns.

The weather has started to cool off which means basketball season is around the corner. The Dallas Mavericks started practicing Monday. I am excited about the upcoming season even though it was a relatively quiet off season. The most important thing was to make sure the best player in franchise history was back in a Maverick uniform this season. Dirk Nowitzki not only signed a new contract early, he also gave up $20 million to help the team be able to afford good quality talent to surround him. The Mavs didn’t reel in any big free agents. They traded long time center Erick Dampier, Eduardo Najera and Matt Carroll for Tyson Chandler and Alexis Ajinca. Dampier has since been waived by the Bobcats. They also acquired Dominique Jones who was selected 25th overall in this year’s draft. The starting lineup will be pretty much the same as it was last year. Many fans and coaches want to see Roddy Beaubois in the starting lineup. He had a few big games as a rookie but was used sparingly for the most part. That could be delayed by the

broken foot he suffered while training with the French national team. If he is healthy look for him to start in the backcourt with Jason Kidd. Kidd who is now 37 looked more comfortable last year. He had his highest point average since rejoining the Mavs in 2008. He can still be a big contributor but will need his rest. Brendan Haywood will start at center after signing a six year deal for $55 million. I hope he plays with the intensity he showed when he first got

here and not like he did at the end of the season. Caron Butler will be used at guard and forward. He has averaged at least 15 points a game for the last seven seasons. Nowitzki is the Mavs and as long as he stays healthy the team has a chance to make a playoff run. He is the do all end all. The first preseason game is a home game October 5th against the Washington Wizards and number one overall pick John Wall. The regular season begins October 27th at home against the Charlotte Bobcats. If you can afford a ticket to see them play the now hated Miami Heat then circle November 27th on your calendar. On Monday October 4th they are having their annual Fan Jam. It’s free to get in and parking is $5. You get to see an open practice. The Mavs dancers and Maniacs will also be there.

MLB: Angels vs Rangers Fri. October 1 – 7:05PM – Rangers Ballpark – KTXA-21 The first game of the final regular season series. 13 game winner Jered Weaver takes the mound for his final start of the season. The Angels will be trying to end 2010 on a high note. The Rangers have Colby Lewis who is trying for his 13th win of the season and a warm up for the postseason.

College Football: (21) Texas vs (8) Oklahoma Sat. October 2 – 2:30PM – Cotton Bowl – ABC It’s the Red River Rivalry and anything can happen. Throw out the rankings when these two teams meet. Texas was crushed last week against UCLA and Oklahoma has had some wins that have been to close for comfort. Which QB will lead their team to victory? Will there be some Sooner Magic or will Texas finally get their offense rolling?

College Football: (7) Florida vs (1) Alabama Sat. October 2 – 7PM – Bryant-Denny Stadium – CBS This is as good as it gets. These teams have met in the last two SEC Championship games and have won the last two national titles, but haven’t met in the regular season since 2006. Florida has had some slow starts and better not have one here. The Crimson Tide has a staunch defense. Can the Gators slow down Ingram and Richardson?

Photos Courtesy: Tim Gravens

NFL: Ravens vs Steelers Sun. October 3 – NOON – Heinz Field – CBS Two great defensive teams face off for battle in the AFC’s “Black and Blue” division. This is the last game the undefeated Steelers are without Big Ben Roethlisberger. Mendenhall will have to carry the offense for the Steelers. The Ravens will rely on QB Joe Flacco to manage the game and make some passes to Anquan Boldin and Todd Heap.

“The Dallasite from the North”

While I’ve lived in North Texas for nearly two years, it didn’t take me long to realize that this is football country. Who wouldn’t when you are inundated with the Cowboys, Longhorns, Horned Frogs, Aggies, Red Raiders, Sooners, Bears, Mustangs, Mean Green and many of the best high school teams on the planet? But as an avid baseball fan, I’ve been more attracted to the Texas Rangers than any other team in the metroplex. Of course it didn’t hurt that Rangers Ballpark in Arlington was only six blocks away from my former employer, the United States Bowling Congress. My first ever Rangers game was opening day 2009. It was sunny and 49 degrees at game time. Where I come from in Wisconsin that’s a heat wave, but here you had to bundle up like it was winter. The stadium was packed and the enthusiasm flowing, much like my final few years at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers. I was coming off 2008 when the Brewers made the playoffs for the first time in nearly two decades. I had heard baseball wasn’t always top of mind around here but it sure didn’t seem like it on this day. I was psyched for the rest of the season and hoped my fellow Dallas-Ft. Worth residents would be too. As the summer moved along, I realized what my Texas comrades said. The Rangers were playing pretty good ball but not many people came to watch even after school let out. How could this be in a metropolitan area of 6.5 million? In Milwaukee, with a metro population of 1.5 million, if it was a Saturday night, it was standing room only and even summer weeknights drew at least 30,000.

I couldn’t understand why the fourthlargest metropolitan area in the country wasn’t supporting this team. Sure, it gets hot but if you truly love the game, you ignore that little fact. What I finally came to realize – besides being football country and the heat - was that for so many years, the Rangers weren’t winning. They had disappointed their fans year in and year out since last making the playoffs in 1999. Fans had become skeptical about the product on the field and the ownership off it. So they stayed home and perhaps watched on television. The start of this year seemed the same. The team played well enough to draw a few more fans but not to the levels to which I was accustomed. That all changed on July 9th, the day Cliff Lee became a Ranger. Nearly two years to the day the Brewers acquired C.C. Sabathia, it told me the Rangers too were serious about winning. Less than one month later, the long nightmare of Tom Hicks’ ownership ended and the new group of Chuck Greenberg and Nolan Ryan took over. Since those two events, the Ballpark has been rocking. It’s been the kind of place I knew it always could and should be. It’s reminded me of my last year in baseball-crazy Milwaukee. Now the Rangers are getting ready for the playoffs where they will face either the New York Yankees or Tampa Bay Rays. My adopted favorite team has the right stuff to not only win that series but also the World Series. In a region dominated by football, wouldn’t it be great for baseball fever to continue through the end of October. I’ll be at the first playoff game. Hope to see you there!

Will Cliff Lee make a difference?

Adrian Peterson - Peterson is arguably the most feared running back in the NFL. After missing the final two games of his junior season at OU, Peterson showed that the Vikings made the right pick when he rushed for over 1,300 yards his rookie season. He has been a beast ever since.

Brian Orakpo - Without a doubt Orakpo is one of the most terrifying linebackers in the NFL. After a stellar senior season at Texas in 2008, Orakpo showed the Redskins they made the right choice at 13th overall when he was voted to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, recording 11 sacks.

Tommie Harris - Harris has been a rock since Chicago drafted the Lombardi and Bill Willis trophy winner 14th overall in 2004. He was runner up for Rookie of the Year in 2004 and has been voted to the Pro Bowl in 2005, 2006 and 2007, as well as being named second team All-Pro in 2005. Roy Williams - The Oklahoma version of Roy Williams has lived up to expectations far better than the Texas version. This Roy has five Pro Bowls since being drafted 8th overall in 2002, including an All-Pro selection in 2003. At OU he won the Bronco Nagurski and Jim Thorpe Awards in 2001 as the nation’s best defensive player and best defensive back. Phil Loadholt - Loadholt continues to block for former college teammate Adrian Peterson. After doubt about his agility and quickness coming out of OU in 2009, he has supplanted himself in the starting lineup as right tackle. An All-American his senior year, Loadholt was part of one of the greatest offensive teams in college football in 2008 alongside Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford.

Garret Hartley - Hartley snuck into the top 5 purely off his clutch play in the playoffs last season with the Saints. He was also the first kicker in Super Bowl history with three field goals over 40 yards.

Jermichael Finley - Quietly, Finley is beginning to stake a claim as one of the top tight ends in the league. As a primary target for Aaron Rodgers, Finley is helping Green Bay claim one of the most electrifying offenses in the NFL.

Sure the Red River Rivalry is this weekend and the Eyes of Texas and the nation will be watching the game with great interest. There have been many classics in this series with classic moments. Many of these were created by incredible athletes from both schools. Here’s my list of the top current NFL players who have an impact on the game on any given Sunday:

Lyle Sendlein - He maybe the most underrated offensive linemen in the NFL. As an undrafted free agent in 2007, Sendlein became a weekly starter in 2008 and was a part of one of the most surprising runs in NFL playoff history when the Cardinals made it to the Super Bowl. He was also a starter on UT’s national championship team in 2005. Cedric Benson - A four-year starter at Texas, Benson ranks 6th all-time in rushing in NCAA history and only behind Ricky Williams at UT. Benson is coming off of his best year in the league after rushing for over 1,200 yards, helping lead Cincinnati to its first playoff appearance since 2005. Nathan Vasher - Due to recent injuries, Vasher has not seen the field much, but when healthy, he is one of the most feared return men in the game. As a Longhorn, Vasher tied a school record with 17 picks during his career but became known in the NFL after his Pro Bowl year in 2005. In 2006, he was key in the Bears run to the Super Bowl and sealed the NFC championship game with a pick of Drew Brees in the final minutes.

Longhorns Offense vs. Oklahoma Defense

The Oklahoma defense has been inconsistent all season long. It’s the only way to explain how it was ripped open by Utah State and Air Force, but was dominant against a ranked Florida State team. Head Coach Bob Stoops put a lot of stock in the way OU finished against Cincinnati. He believes his team has not yet defined itself, but he takes some pleasure in those types of indicators. The Longhorns haven’t been able get a consistent running game despite being loaded with young talent but a rivalry game might be the cure to what ails them. “Just saying the words OU around here gets everybody fired up,” Longhorns tailback Fozzy Whittaker said. “We’ll have a chance to redeem ourselves.” The Longhorns managed only 3.7 yards on 23 carries behind an offensive line that is struggling to run block and pass protect in their loss to UCLA. The Longhorns quarterback Garrett Gilbert has shown flashes of brilliance but like all young passers will miss open receivers and throw interceptions. The young quarterback and lack of running game will ultimately help Oklahoma hide their one weakness, rushing defense. Cincinnati tailback Isaiah Pead ran for 169 yards on 21 carries. Poor tackling was partly to blame, but so was scheming. UC outfoxed the Sooners with a series of inside sweeps. Air Force was also successful against OU utilizing the option and don’t think the Texas staff didn’t notice. Expect Texas to put a few of those wrinkles in their game plan to try and capitalize on the success those teams had running the ball.

Advantage: Oklahoma Sooners Defense

ahoma Sooners:

Discourage the Longhorns from running the ball and exploiting your weakness. Feed Demarco Murray the ball early and often. He’s one of the best playmakers you’ve got. Try using him in screens once Texas begins to creep up to the line. Pick your spots to go after Garrett Gilbert but for the most part stay in coverage and make him beat you with his decision making. Chances are good that he will make a mistake. The Oklahoma pass rush will make some plays with his tendency to hesitate.

as Longhorns:

Call some blitzes from the secondary to get Landry Jones to start seeing ghosts. His record on the road (even on neutral fields) shows he’s already on edge in these types of games. Having him second guess what he sees in coverage will create confusion in the Oklahoma offense. Oklahoma expects Texas to open with a barrage of running plays. Texas should hit them up with a few quick strikes down the field to give Gilbert some confidence and put OU on their heels. Only when they adjust to the pass do you take advantage of Oklahoma’s weak run defense. Coming out with something they don’t expect chips away at player’s confidence in what their coaches have been preaching all week in practice.

Oklahoma Offense vs. Texas Defense

Every one of Oklahoma’s five losses last season came away from home. Two were on neutral fields, to BYU at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington and to Texas at the Cotton Bowl. Others came at Miami, Nebraska and Texas Tech. It was an issue that seemed to affect quarterback Landry Jones most significantly. I think it’s safe to say that Oklahoma is going to commit to running the ball for two reasons. Limit the mistakes of Landry Jones and to feature one of their best players in DeMarco Murray. The real head scratcher is the #1 nationally ranked Texas run defense getting absolutely shredded by UCLA last week. UCLA finished the game with a jaw dropping 264 yards on the ground. Bruins QB Kevin Prince threw for only 27 yards, but he was able to connect in the fourth quarter to keep drives alive and help run out the clock. That was the thing that Texas defense hung their hat on and their confidence has to be a little shaken after that performance. The usually stingy defense had a bad day to say the least but chalk it up to just that, a bad day. The Texas defense should be extremely focused this week during meetings and should come out with a chip on their shoulder.

I thought the Cowboys would win against the Texans mainly because of the been embarrassed-back against the wall theory. They played with a purpose and efficiency that we haven’t seen. Big moments include: 1. Defense - Start of second quarter, Texans first and goal on the Cowboys 7 yard line. All the Texans get is a field goal. 2. Offense - Next series, Cowboys have a 13 play 80 yard drive for a touchdown. They make three third and longs on the drive. 3. Buehler – Makes a 49 yard field goal on the last play of the first half that’s good. 4. Ware – Has three sacks. 5. Roy Williams – Has two touchdowns. 6. Defense - Has three takeaways. 7. Clincher!!! – In the fourth quarter, with the Texans first and goal on the Cowboys 1 yard line the defense holds them to a field goal. Game over!!! So there’s your recipe for success. No turnovers, three takeaways, a good running game, excellent passing game, very good kicking game and contributions by a lot of people. Last week there was a player’s only meeting. The fans and media deluge of criticism seems to have sparked the team to a better performance with their back to the wall. I do have a question, and that is why hasn’t that approach been used in the first two games? Hopefully they will remember what it took and apply themselves accordingly. There is a bye week now and there will be the usual three days of practice and then the weekend off. Come back on Monday and get ready for Tennessee. The bye week will be utilized to work on some aspects they think needs attention. How to get the ball to Felix Jones and Dez Bryant for example and to rest anyone that is hurt. This is early in the season for a bye and you would rather have it later. No one will say that, but it’s true and you can’t do anything about it, so you go about your business. Rest is usually the biggest reward of the bye week. What does the win mean for the future? It allows everyone to take a deep breath and realize that any goal they wanted is still out there and attainable. The NFC East at this point hasn’t shown a dominate team so with Philly at 2-1 and the rest at 1-2 it all can fall in place. It will only do so with the type of performance we saw versus Houston. Dallas can’t just show up and win, but when they show up and perform they are as talented as anyone. And if you are talented and approach things in the proper way good things can happen. Join Coach Joe at Hat Tricks in Lewisville for all the great sports and fabulous music. Check hattricksdallas.com for info. An Uptown Delight: Sushi on McKinney

Sushi lovers and those who want to learn about the greatness of sushi can look no further than Sushi on McKinney to satisfy their needs. They have been at it for 20 plus years and is growing in popularity due to their high quality sushi and affordable prices. Like their sushi, they pay attention to the details when it comes to ambiance. The hardwood floors, soft music playing in the background, Koi and Japanese art work (some of which has been there since the restaurant was founded) all blend together.

Photos Courtesy: Yu-Ping Chen

The Appetizers Before delving into the sushi, I recommend that you try some of the appetizers. The Nikusashi is delicious and great for those who love steak. It’s New York strip that is thinly sliced, marinated, rare and served cold with a zesty flavor. The Agedashi Tofu is another great starter. The fried bean curd is served with vegetables served in tempura sauce. For those looking for something simpler, the Gyoza are beef dumplings served steamed or fried. The Eggplant Chika (named after the head sushi chef) has a nice flavor. It’s deep-fried eggplant with green and white onions and tomatoes marinated in a ginger sauce topped with dried bonito. The Sushi Rolls Obviously Sushi on McKinney has more sushi rolls than I can consume in one or two visits. While I am sure that they are all delicious, I can recommend a few standouts for you. The Tanuki Roll consists of fresh salmon with tempura flakes on top but inside is what makes this roll special: avocado and cream cheese. This roll is served on top of a sweet eel sauce. Another roll that I enjoyed was the Devil Roll. It’s also a salmon based roll with cucumber and spicy yellow mustard. Be careful when trying this one though as it packs quite a punch. The

Tuna Tataki Roll caught my interest as it is served either like a salad or a traditional sushi roll. The salad version has shredded white radish with seared tuna and a spicy sauce on top. However as an actual roll, it consists of avocado, cucumber, shiso leaf, ponzu sauce with green onions and seared tuna on top. Entrees Too! If you desire more than sushi, there are options as well. I liked the Spicy Red Snapper entrée. The sautéed fish has mushrooms, crawfish and chopped jalapenos on top with rice served on the side. The meal is complimented with your choice of miso soup or a house salad with ginger dressing. After talking with management, I learned that Sumo wrestlers are quite fond of this dish! The Steamed Salmon Medley is a nice healthy choice. The salmon and vegetables are foil wrapped with wine sauce and herbal tea leaves, steamed to perfection. They also have a bit of Asian Fusion here too. For the adventurous, I recommend the Yaki Soba Pad Thai. This is a nice mix of stir fried egg noodles with Japanese and Thai spices. Happy Hour Their daily happy hour is from 5:30-7 p.m. Specials include $1 off all wine by the glass and $5 off per bottle. Hot or cold sake has the same $1 off discount. They offer $1 off all beer. Feel free to choose from the usual suspects: Bud Light, Miller Lite, Corona, Michelob Ultra and Heineken. However you can do it right and select a Japanese beer like: Sapporo, Asahi Super Fry or Kirin Ichiban! All in all, Sushi on McKinney is a great restaurant for business lunches, family and friends. The chefs take great pride in their work. It’s family friendly and many of their customers have been coming here since they were young and are now bringing their own children. A tradition has been born and Sushi on McKinney stands tall.

Post-Cinematic Stress Disorder It’s been awhile since I’ve seen an earth-shatteringly good movie. It seems to be mostly mediocre stuff I’ve seen million of times before. Producers keep churning out these overdone clichés that seem to slowly kill my brain cells one by one. I’ve had enough. Go watch some bad movies and I’m sure you’ll come up with a few more clichés like these that need to stay on the cutting room floor. by: Jesse Whitman “A Woman’s Perspective”

Violent Birth Scenes - Why do they do this to us? Is it really necessary to watch sweaty, red-faced women screaming in agony for five minutes? Only true misogynists would be behind this annoying and all too common movie cliché. The most offensive scene I can recall was the birth scene in Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, where she was screaming in agony and drowning in a well. Thanks to this, I knew Mel Gibson was evil long before the Oksana incident. Now I have a morbid fear of giving birth and am seriously considering adoption.

Arbitrary Death - A perfect example of this is in Nicholas Sparks’ horrendous Nights in Rodanthe, which was so bad

Football rivalries are not the only thing to do at the State Fair of Texas – far from it. The world’s biggest state fair also hosts one of the world’s biggest auto shows and some 75 percent of fairgoers kick at least one or two tires while attending this autumnal right of passage. A sign of the show’s popularity (and importance) might be that Big Tex himself faces the 300,000 square feet of buildings and outdoor displays designated for the latest offerings of cars, trucks and SUVs. What’s in store for folks this year? “Green” is beginning to take its place among the fossil fuel consumers. Nissan has its new Leaf electric vehicle (capable of going 100 miles on a charge) in the Centennial building and the Chevy Volt is on hand in the automobile building. Also in attendance this year is our first look at a plug-in Toyota Prius hybrid. Outside in the truck area, we find GMC has expanded its “arena” moving the Ford oil derrick (featuring a Super Duty truck spinning on top and a Raptor climbing up the side) slightly to the left (or right depending on your political position). Ram has a stuffed longhorn steer in its area this year to coincide with the announcement of the new Longhorn package that will soon be offered across its pickup lineup to compete with Ford’s King Ranch. Speaking of Ford, the automaker has a host of new products on display including the new F-Series powertrains, a Boss 302 Mustang and the Fiesta next to one of the longest foosball tables I have ever seen. I found in the State Fair FAQs that CHL holders can carry their weapons upon fairgrounds legally (but not inside the Cotton Bowl stadium) and these folks may be interested in Ram’s new Outdoorsman package that offers gun racks inside the RamBox compartments.

that it gives the chick flick genre an even worse reputation than it already has. And spoiler alert—(and my sympathies for the pain this movie will be sure to cause you)— Richard Gere dies in the end. Two romantically pathetic characters finally get laid and then one of them dies unexpectedly in a mudslide. Nice. Thanks so much. I’ve already wasted two hours of my life on this movie and now I want to go slit my wrists. CGI - While it was amazing what James Cameron did with Dances With Wolves,—I mean Avatar, there is always a chance of overkill with computer effects. I go to the movies to see real live action, not action scenes with so much animation it looks like a cartoon. And Jar-Jar Binks, may you burn in hell for eternity for showing up in Star Wars only to annoy the hell out of me and sell action figures to nerds.

15 Weddings - It seems every other movie involves a wedding and the character’s happiness depending on the outcome of said nuptials. The one exception is The Hangover, which was funny and clever enough to overcome the tired wedding cliché. However, this wedding movie cliché is obviously a marketing ploy that is good for the wedding industry but bad for the fragile egos of women everywhere who are tricked into thinking this wedding illusion is their only way to happiness. And it’s worse for their men. The Fruit Stand Crash - I’ve seen this so many times. Yes, car chases can be fun to watch in an action movie, but why do they always have to smash into a fruit stand? What is this obsession filmmakers have with seeing fruit rolling all over the street? What about running into bumper-to-bumper traffic that stops the chase altogether? That seems a little more realistic. Leave those poor fruit stall vendors alone. They have enough problems.

Toyota once again chose our State Fair venue for a model debut, this year rolling out a redesigned Highlander and Highlander Hybrid SUV. Fuel economy is now up to 28 mpg city from the equivalent of a 280hp powertrain under the hood of the new hybrid edition. Jeep has its entire new lineup on hand. The 2011 product portfolio got makeovers ranging from mild to complete including Patriot, Grand Cherokee and the iconic Wrangler. The Chrysler Corporation is also displaying one of the last new Vipers we will see, at least for a while. Stop by and pay your respects accordingly. Before leaving the auto show this year, I was treated to a little trip down memory lane. Tucked away in a corner inside the Centennial building behind some white curtains were three hot rods – custom-built cars from my childhood that I watched on TV and built replica models of. No one was around so I helped myself into the booth space to check them out. Here sat a Monkeesmobile Pontiac, the Green Hornet Chrysler Imperial limo and – wait for it – the Batmobile, which was originally a Ford Lincoln Futura concept car. Whether eating a corny dog, waving “howdy” at Big Tex or reveling in television automotive history, we can all be kids again at the State Fair of Texas.

What A Weekend! A man left for work one Friday afternoon. But it was payday, so instead of going home, he stayed out the entire weekend partying with the boys and spending his entire paycheck. When he finally appeared at home on Sunday night, he was confronted by his angry wife and was barraged for nearly two hours with a tirade befitting his actions. Finally his wife stopped the nagging and said to him, “How would you like it if you didn’t see me for two or three days?” He replied, “That would be fine with me.” Monday went by and he didn’t see his wife. Tuesday and Wednesday came and went with the same results. But on Thursday, the swelling went down just enough where he could see her a little out of the corner of his left eye…

Did You See This Coming in 3D? Resident Evil. Piranha. Step Up. Cats and Dogs. The Last Airbender. Clash of the Titans. Alice In Wonderland. The Final Destination. My Bloody Valentine. Night of the Living Dead. The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl. G-Force. What do they all have in common? Besides being some of the worst films of the decade, all of them are in 3D. In Hollywood’s latest ploy to get you to spend an arm and a leg and maybe a lung or some other internal organ, they trot out the crappiest dreck every few months and try to call it “entertainment in the third dimension.” I for one, could care less. Leaving out Avatar, Pixar and other animated movies, what good has come of 3D? It doesn’t make the acting any better if the bullets come out into the audience. It doesn’t make the story any better if the audience feels like it can touch the screen. No, damn it! It’s a cheap trick that they have been using for sixty years to make up for the lack of originality in that damn

town. Even the most award winning 3D film, Avatar, is questionably good. When the top ten list of all-time 3D movies includes a Spy Kids installment and the worst Shrek movie, chances are that something isn’t right. Now, it’s not 3D’s fault. No, it’s the idiots who think that they can make us pay $15 to have things digitally thrown at our faces and give us migraines. Vote with your dollars, folks, and just flat out don’t go. Oh and if you needed more convincing, here is a short list of films coming out soon in 3D: The Smurfs. Kung Fu Panda 2. Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Yogi Bear. The Chronicles of Narnia 3. Jackass 3D. Saw 3D. Frankenweenie. Spy Kids 4. Alvin and the Chipmunks 3D. Titanic 3D (WTF!?) The Nutcracker. And the overall pick for an early Oscar, Transformers 3. I rest my case. Suck it, 3D.
