BY LANCE LEVAN – @LANCELEVAN1

UFC 181 will be held in Las Vegas on Dec. 6. In my opinion, this is going to be one of the best fight cards in quite a while. All five of the main fights are going to be very exciting and action packed. All of these fights have the makings for “Fight of the Night.”

UFC 182 will be held in Las Vegas on Jan. 3. Looks like this is going to be a very good fight card. The top three fights are going to be serious battles. A title belt may change hands and some fighters may move up (or down) in the rankings. Once again, all of these fights have the makings for “Fight of the Night.”

(C) Johny “Bigg Rigg” Hendricks (16-2-0) vs. (No. 1) Robbie “Ruthless” Lawler (24-10-0 1NC) This is going to be a five-round welterweight (170 pounds) title fight. This definitely is another one of those fights that I have got to watch. I saw these two guys fight in Dallas in March. It was an epic battle. But Hendricks came away with the belt. I always enjoy watching matches between top contenders, like this fight. Everyone knew after that last fight there would be a rematch. This is going to be a brawl. Both of these fighters are known for their punching power and neither one of them is scared to take a punch. Both fighters are former wrestlers, so it is possible to see some good takedowns. In the end, someone is going to get KTFO. There is no bad-blood between these two warriors...Hendricks has the belt…and Lawler wants it for himself. My prediction: Hendricks wins via TKO in the fifth round. (C) Anthony “Showtime” Pettis (17-2-0) vs. (No. 1) Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez (22-3-0) This is a five-round lightweight (155 pounds) title fight. This is going to be an awesome fight. I have been watching this season of The Ultimate Fighter to try and see some drama from these two coaches…but I don’t see anything. There doesn’t’ appear to be any bad blood between them. They are very professional athletes. Pettis has won eight of his last nine fights and is the current lightweight champion. He is fast and very technical. But for some reason…he loves to brawl. He seems to enjoy trading punches with his opponents. Melendez has also won eight of his last nine fights. In the striking area…I have to give the nod to Pettis. He is a much more technical striker and throws fight-ending punches from seemingly any angle. In the grappling department, Melendez has the edge, but he tends to give up positioning when he gets too aggressive. I am hoping that Pettis’ previous knee injury will not be a factor in this fight. I would hate to see that be the reason that he loses this fight. In the end…I have to go with the champion in this prediction.

5

(C) Jon “Bones” Jones (20-1-0) vs. (No. 2) Daniel “DC” Cormier (15-0-0)

This is a three-round heavyweight (265 pounds) fight that should be action-packed. Both of these guys seem to seriously enjoy smashing their opponents and dishing out LOTS of ground and pound. Browne has won three of his last four fights and is looking to move one step closer to a title shot. A decisive win versus Schaub might propel him up a notch…or at least get him a little closer to the belt. Browne is a purple belt in BJJ, so he won’t mind going to the ground. But I think he prefers to punch and elbow his opponents when they are on the ground. Schaub is a brown belt in BJJ and a former pro football player. These guys are going to try and punch their way in… take down the other fighter…and smash their opponent on the ground. There probably won’t be any submission attempts, but I think the referee will definitely be stopping this fight early. As much as they punch…as hard as they hit…someone is going to get KTFO in this fight. It’s just a matter of “who is it gonna be.” I think that it is all going to come down to who is the better striker and who has the ability to take more punishment and keep moving ahead. In my honest opinion…I think that Browne has both of those things in his favor. Schaub is an awesome competitor, but Browne is No. 3 for a reason. This fight will probably not go the entire three rounds. These guys are not known for stalling or trying to win by points. They go out and try to wreak havoc on each other.

This is going to be a five-round light heavyweight (205 pounds) title fight. This is going to be a match that a LOT of people are going to be watching. Obviously, Jones is the current champion. His striking is very unconventional and difficult to duplicate in training. His ground and pound…and his deadly elbows are legendary. Those elbows can quickly end a fighter’s night. Jones’ wrestling and BJJ background make him comfortable if the match goes to the ground, but I am not looking for any submissions from the champ during this fight. Same thing goes for DC. He is a world-class level Olympic wrestler and a brown belt in BJJ. But if (when) this fight goes to the ground, I am not looking for submissions. These guys are going to be looking to do damage with their punches and elbows from the ground. One of the biggest factors in this fight will be the reach difference between these two guys. There is almost a 13-inch reach difference, which means that Jones can throw punches from a LONG way away. Cormier will either need to find a way to stand and trade with Jones…or take the champ down and dominate him from the top. If he allows Jones to find his range, he will stop throwing punches and will throw elbows in the clinch. Those elbows can open huge cuts very quickly and end the fight. If Cormier allows Jones to find his rhythm and his range…Jones will pick him apart and end this fight quickly. If Cormier can land his heavy hands…or he can impose his will on the mat…I think he has the tools to take the belt away from the champion. Either way, this will be a very technical and, potentially, very bloody fight. Both fighters are former wrestlers, so it is possible to see some good takedowns. In the end, I think that Cormier has been doing his homework and has a very sound game plan. Jones is a great fighter and has been an awesome champion, but now it is DC’s time.

My prediction: Browne wins via TKO in the second round.

My prediction: Cormier wins via TKO in the third round.

My prediction: Pettis wins by submission (triangle choke) in the fourth round. (No. 3) Travis “Hapa” Browne (16-2-1) vs. Brendan “Big Brown” Schaub (11-4-0)

Disagree with me about the UFC 181 or 182 matches? Let me know via Twitter @BlitzWeekly and we’ll see who has better picks the night of the fights.

(No. 4) Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (25-6-0 1NC) vs. (No. 8) Myles “Fury” Jury (15-0-0)

and he is on a five-fight win-streak in the Octagon. Obviously he has great stand-up abilities. I am not sure of his BJJ training but he has a sick submission game from bottom. Jury doesn’t have the same experience that Cerrone does, but he has been tearing through the division with a purpose. Only three of his fights have gone to a decision. His last two fights were against some big names (Diego Sanchez and Takanori Gomi). This kid is a black belt in BJJ and has some mean hands too. Both of these guys are very fast…so I will try not to blink during the action. I know that Cerrone is on a streak and he is moving up in the rankings…but I just can’t overlook a 15-0 record. Jury is up-and-coming and a decisive win here will catapult him in the rankings…possibly even into contention for the title. Cerrone winning here will definitely move him that much closer to a shot at the belt, which he so badly wants. My prediction: Jury wins by TKO in the third round. (No. 6) Hector “Lightning” Lombard (34-4-1 1NC) vs. Josh “The People’s Warrior” Burkman (27-10-0) This is a three-round welterweight (170 pounds) fight that should be action-packed. This fight kind of confuses me. Burkman has been out of the Octagon since 2008 (UFC 90) and had lost four of his last five UFC bouts. He has been fighting in other venues, but now, on his first fight back in the UFC, he is going to fight Lombard, a 4th Dan in Judo and a black belt in BJJ. He also is unbeaten as a professional kick boxer. Not to mention… the guy is built like a tank. Burkman was (and probably still is) a really good fighter, but in my opinion, I don’t think he can handle all of the tools that Lombard is bringing to the table. Lombard hits hard, has world-class takedowns (Judo) and great submissions (BJJ). My prediction: Lombard wins via TKO in the second round.

This is a three-round lightweight (155 pounds) fight. This is going to be an awesome fight. I have to admit that I am a big fan of both of these fighters. Cerrone’s kickboxing career is legendary WWW.BLITZWEEKLY.COM

COMMISSIONER GOODELL looks to bring the good people of the U.K. football...and make lots of money in the process.

THE GLOBAL INITIATIVE

The NFL plans to invade London by 2022, the rest of the world shortly after

he National Football League has played meaningful, regular-season games in London since 2007 and now the league appears to be on the trajectory of eventually placing an actual team there permanently.

anywhere from just over 14,000 fans to barely 20,000 per game since that 1991 season.

Efforts by the NFL to go global date back to 1991 when the league and owners decided it was time to try their hand at having American football played overseas in Europe. The NFL Europe League, which had teams in the U.K., Germany, Spain and the Netherlands, was one of the very first experiments the NFL did with branching out around the world.

“In the end, despite some regional success stories in Germany, the league ceased operating because it was realized that the fans wanted the highest version of the game – the NFL itself,” he said. “So by the mid-2000s, as the NFL Europe League was entering its final couple of years, the focus began to turn more on playing real meaningful NFL games overseas.”

The league initially began with 10 teams competing in the United States and Europe but after a two-year hiatus from 1993-94, the league returned in 1995 as a six-team, all-European venture, and existed in that format through its final season in 2007.

Since the NFL Europe League ended in 2007, fans abroad have been able to witness meaningful games played by actual NFL teams in Canada and the U.K. to great fanfare and success. The success experienced by the NFL regarding playing overseas has prompted owners and the commissioner to look at London as the next landing spot for an NFL franchise.

An experiment that ultimately failed because the rosters in this developmental league were filled with fringe NFL players, practice squad quality prospects and undrafted rookies. During the 15-year run of this league, the average attendance per game was just 19,047. The average attendance per game topped out at 25,361 during its inaugural season and ranged SMARTER, SHARPER MEN

According to David Tossel, NFL head of public affairs in the U.K. and Europe, from 1995 onwards the focus of the international efforts was largely the NFL Europe League.

Tossel said there is no firm timetable for a team to relocate to London, or a city such as Toronto or Montreal. But because the NFL has been successful in growing its audience and fan base it’s something we could see happen within the next 10 years.

“The games we are playing have been successful in growing new fans and advancing all areas of our business – e.g. television ratings,” he said. “The commissioner himself has said that if our business continues to grow then the chance of a franchise in the U.K. becomes greater, but there is no timeline on when we will make that assessment.” The NFL announced next year’s London games in November and the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions all will be making the trip across the pond. Jerry Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, is a supporter of the NFL’s efforts to place a permanent team in London and enjoys when his team plays there. He said he is not sure when the Cowboys would make a return trip, but in an interview with dallascowboys.com he was very blunt about his feelings on the matter and whether he wants the team to go back. “Yes. And I wouldn’t dare elaborate under when, what, how, but again, this is attractive to our franchise,” Jones said. “This is attractive to me. I like the idea. I like for our players to have these experiences.” Jones, speaking for the Cowboys, said the team would very much like to have a team in London.

“It has an air about it of international competition,” he said. “I think that London is probably one of two or three cities outside of the United States that really does have all of the criteria that I would look at for having an NFL team.” During the recent trip made by the Cowboys and Jaguars, there was a meeting between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Vice President of the International NFL Mark Waller and George Osborne, Britain’s chancellor of the Exchequer. According to Waller, November’s meeting focused on the progress the NFL has made in the U.K., the growing fan base and the increasing interest of playing in London permanently and the fans there who want the NFL. “We were talking through our growth plan and what we would like to see,” Waller said. “The government is interested and asking if there’s anything they can do. We’ve had great meetings with the chancellor and with Boris Johnson (London’s mayor) and Sajid Javid (secretary of state for culture, media and sport). We’ve got a sense of a lot of good support. We’re very happy with the relationship we’re building.” Waller went on to say he thinks it’s great for London and that London is building itself as a world center of sport and the NFL wants to be a part of that.

“WHEN WE STARTED (WITH THE SERIES IN 2007),

I RECKONED IT'D TAKE

15 YEARS TO DO IT. THAT WAS WHAT I EXPECTED, AND WE'RE STILL ON COURSE. WE'RE AT THE MIDPOINT NOW.

–Mark Waller

Still, no one is sure of the logistics should an NFL team permanently plant roots in London. Any team there would be required to travel TransAtlantic; just as any visiting team from the United States would when going there. That would not be so bad for the London team on the years they line-up the schedule to play NFC or AFC East teams. However, travel could become an issue on the years they are to play teams from the NFC or AFC West. Flying from New York to London takes nearly eight hours. Making a trip from Dallas to London would take just over nine hours. Traveling from California to London would take at least 11 hours. Take into account the time difference of five, six, and eight hours from each of those three regions of the U.S. and it can be an even larger issue. Then, of course, there is the question of whether the team would be based in London year round while the talent still lives in the United States, and would players want to sign to play there? It is a reason John Madden, in an interview with USA Today, said, “I don’t think that London thing can ever work.” Madden’s sentiment is not shared by the NFL, obviously, and according to Waller the NFL isn’t just considering putting a team in London anymore – the plan is already in motion to have a team permanently placed there by 2022.

DECEMBER 2014

“When we started (with the series in 2007), I reckoned it’d take 15 years to do it,” Waller said. “That was what I expected, and we’re still on course. We’re at the midpoint now.” If things go according to Waller’s plan, the London team will likely be kicking off in Wembley Stadium in 2022. At the outset of that season, the next collective bargaining agreement will be in place, which would establish stability for the sport, and the television contracts will be expiring, which will provide an opportunity for additional revenue. Waller also discussed the NFL’s new deal with Sky Sports, which televises the games in England, and has agreed as part of a new fiveyear extension to promote the NFL as heavily as it promotes other premier sports properties. Per Waller, roughly 400,000 viewers per week watch the featured game of the week on Sky Sports. That’s not a huge number compared to the nearly two million Premier League game viewers, but it’s solid enough for the NFL to move forward. As for the growth cited, the league’s data shows that, since 2007, the NFL has gone from the 18th-most-watched sport on Sky Sports to sixth. Amateur football participation also has grown by an average of 15 percent per year since the league took the Giants and Dolphins to Wembley seven years ago. According to the British media who covered the Jaguars game against the Dallas Cowboys, however, what London wants, in their opinion, isn’t a permanent team, but an eight-game schedule featuring a variety of home teams. “They would rather have eight games of different teams,” said Gur Samuel, managing director of American Football Development. “But they seem to be resigned that it will be a permanent team here. The Football Association has said they want to court a team here. The British government has pledged its support to put a team here. Financially, it makes sense to put a team here even if that’s not the best thing for the growth of the sport.”

tries to sugarcoat it, I don’t see how it’s going to work. Even with blocks of four games over here, then blocks of four games in the U.S. it would be difficult. If you have different teams every week, you have something exciting and a new energy for each team.” As with most things major corporations do, especially one as ginormous and far-reaching as the NFL, money matters. So far, the economic impact on the NFL and in London has exceeded expectations year-over-year. Independent research carried out by Deloitte in recent months showed that the two games held in 2013 were worth £32 million to the London economy. This could increase to £102 million in the event of a London-hosted franchise playing eight regular games a season in the capital. To put those figures into perspective, the two games in 2013 were worth $50.4 million in U.S. currency and could increase to $160.9 million in U.S. currency if a team were to play permanently in London. Iain Edmondson, head of major events with London & Partners, estimates the total financial impact of all games between 2007 and 2014 to be approximately £200 million, or $315.5 million U.S. The London economy also greatly benefits from these games through tourism. Based on calculations made by London & Partners, for the two 2013 games, 80 percent of the attendees came from outside London. “I expect that proportion to drop with more games, but even so there would be a significant audience from outside London, hence the large economic benefit numbers,” Edmondson said. “We are proud of London’s world-leading reputation for hosting international sport and the NFL is another great example of world-class sport hosted in the city.”

Peter Carline, a sports writer for the Daily Mail Online, shared Samuel’s sentiment.

According to Edmondson, based on the growing fan base of American football worldwide and the success of the NFL in London since 2007, he does not see the sport as just a novelty overseas.

“Personally, I think that’s better than relocating over here,” Carline said. “No matter how the NFL

“I would agree that the mix of spectators attending the game may change if a team was

permanently in London, but the popularity of the three games this year, alongside the popularity of the TV coverage of the whole season, suggests the NFL is no longer just a novelty,” Edmonson said. Edmondson says NFL management is responsible for taking the necessary steps towards a franchise, but Johnson welcomes the opportunity for a team to call London home. “London is a very international city and a city that loves sport, so I am sure ‘the locals’ would embrace a team,” he said. Even if the NFL does accomplish its goal of placing a team in London by 2022, there still are competitive factors to consider. London already has an incredible calendar of world-class sports and world-class sporting venues. European football (soccer) is a dominate force in Europe and the U.K., as is rugby, tennis and cycling. “I doubt the NFL would ever take on the popularity of our home-grown football, but I am sure it will still have a significant audience,” Edmondson said.

remains one of a few members within his family to actually pursue a career in music. “My mother is an author and painter and my dad played bass guitar,” he said. “Surprisingly, not many people in my family are musicians. My brother plays guitar and I didn’t find out actually until I was already well into my music career and he is really good too.” Upon hearing the first note of his new compilation, you quickly understand why his biggest influences are Kurt Cobain, Randy Newman and Ray Davies. You also would be surprised to learn that the country, folk, gospel and hip-hop genres have heavily influenced his rhythmic skill. Groups such as OutKast have played a massive part in cultivating his musical evolution. If Martin’s name sounds familiar, you may recognize him as the keyboardist/songwriter/ vocalist of the Dallas-based band Goodnight Ned. Only two words can simply summarize Martin’s decision to strike out on his own – individual creativity. “There is definitely an element where I just wanted to do something and have complete control, just to see what would happen honestly,” he said.

J

onas Martin does not take himself too seriously. While most people turn to earnest, yet predictable adjectives to describe themselves, Martin’s “sarcastic, bigheaded and goofy” self-interpretation of his own personality produces an honest, yet colorful view of his true self. In fact, the latest video teasers for his debut album Chokecherry Jam feature parodies of cult classic horror movies such as Carrie and The Blair Witch Project. If you are looking for that cliché musical artist who travels to foreign countries for inspiration, then he is not your guy. Martin definitely breaks the foundation of the traditional musician. Possessing an unruffled, yet confident style, his musical spirit screams rebel in every sense of the word. Born in San Antonio but raised in Dallas, he’s a remix of the quintessential southern dude. When it

comes to music, Martin’s eclectic taste solidifies his personality and melodic swag. Prince, A Tribe Called Quest, old blue eyes himself Frank Sinatra and Emmylou Harris are constants on his iTunes playlist. Most musicians attribute their talent to good family genes and life experiences. Martin is no exception. His life encompasses the same ingredients typical to that of a legendary performer. As a child he grew up playing the piano, was a member of his school bands and witnessed firsthand the impact of his father Glenn Martin’s career as a popular 98.7 KLUV DJ. Throw in ample encouragement from both parental units to chase his dreams and you have got the makings of a star. However, you also would be surprised to know two truths: it was not until his 20s that Martin was lured to follow his passion and he

For those Goodnight Ned fans who assume that the birth of Martin’s solo career means the death of the group, rest assured he still remains an integral part of the popular local band. The album release for his highly anticipated solo album Chokecherry Jam, will take place Jan. 10 at the Prophet Bar, but the meaning behind the title itself is a conundrum. Chokecherries are naturally bitter berries that when combined with sugar and lemon juice create quite a tasty treat. So naturally one would assume that such an uncommon fruit spread would provoke an even deeper meaning. However, listeners shouldn’t think too much into the meaning behind the album’s name. “The album overall has no specific conceptual meaning,” Martin explained. As difficult as it is to believe, despite the complexity of each lyric included on the LP, there is no one method to determine his musical

“There is definitely an element where I just wanted to do something and have complete control, just to see what would happen honestly.” madness. In fact, the title came to life while he was on tour, traveling down a lonely country road in the middle of nowhere. Quite the ingenious lyricist, Martin has no qualm about excluding exaggerated meaning during his valuable time in the studio. “The album as a body of work was not produced with the intent to create a concept album, yet the theme of every song that is imbedded into the record’s sequence meshed well with one another,” he said. “I guess it is just the next step of my career as a songwriter.” No Wonder, a single that explores his journey to find the meaning behind the many questions of life, definitely will spark curiosity behind what to expect from the remaining musical masterpiece. In the midst of dark undertones outwardly displayed by this single, a true interpretation of the tune’s deeper meaning lies exposed. “It’s just me saying that maybe I don’t need to spend so much time worried about death and why we are here and all that nonsense when I have such a small amount of time to live my life,” he said. There is no elaborate story behind how Martin chose special guests Oil Boom and Wesley Geiger for his impending album release. He didn’t bump into them at an epic trendy day party. Nope. His decision came solely from their parallel sounds and comparable flair that ensures a harmonious consistency during his Jan. 10 show. Martin’s positive optimism about the impact of the album is refreshing; nevertheless, the focus remains centered on his fans’ overall contemplation of his latest project. In the meantime, Jonas Martin still maintains his mission to restore enthusiasm about quality music, by encouraging both fans and music skeptics to rock out in life, one note at a time.

THE TRUE MEANING OF THE CHRISTMAS SEASON HAS BEEN LOST. IT’S NOT ABOUT ENDLESS TOY COMMERCIALS, WRAPPING PAPER, OR UNWANTED VISITS FROM YOUR IN-LAWS. THE MONTH OF DECEMBER HOLDS SOMETHING MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN ALL OF THAT – A LIST OF ALL THE BEST PLACES TO EAT, DRINK AND HANG OUT IN DFW AND THE PICKS FOR THE CITY’S BEST MUSIC AND PEOPLE. A LIST CHOSEN AND VOTED FOR BY YOU; WHERE THE WINNERS GET TO HOIST A 6-POUND SWORD OVER THEIR HEADS HE-MAN STYLE. NOW THAT’S 10X MORE BADASS THAN A FAT GUY REVERSE BURGLARIZING YOUR HOUSE. HERE’S TO THIS YEAR’S WINNERS AND EDITOR’S PICKS: SMARTER, SHARPER MEN

VOL. 7 - ISSUE 11

DECEMBER 2014

Best Burger Angry Dog has been serving up excellent burgers since 1990 in its Deep Ellum digs. Although most famously known for its giant sloppy hot dog and a pretty damned good chicken fried chicken sandwich, it also does a terrific half-pound burger loaded up with jalapenos, grilled onions, bacon and more. Order medium rare for a bit of the pink. Blitz Pick: Maple & Motor

Best Wings Pluckers Wing Bar has several location in the DFW area, and is a national chain. But that is where the similarities to bad chicken wings drops off. These babies are fresh, never frozen, and made in house. The chicken itself are these huge, meaty beasts that are pretty delicious and served draped in a variety of sauces. The hot gets hotter as you plow through your plateful. Wash the wings down with a great local brew like the Peticolas Velvet Hammer. Blitz Pick: Quaker Steak & Lube

Best Pizza Your choice for pizza is a strong one with the winner being Campisi’s. Known for its early years with alleged ties to a certain Italian syndicate, this was Jack Ruby’s last dinner before taking out Lee Harvey Oswald. He no doubt went for the spaghetti and meat balls, and probably ordered up a nice pie that is oval, smoky and crispy thin. This Dallas institution makes a solid pizza. Blitz Pick: Il Cane Rosso

Best Asian Cuisine Royal Thai has been open on Greenville Avenue serving its famous Thai dishes for more than 20 years. It was Dallas’ foray into this type of cuisine, and has stayed on course as the city’s favorite ever since. Particularly wonderful are the shrimp and pork dumplings that are not to be missed,

along with Tom Kha Gai soup that is tangy spicy chicken soup with galanga, lemongrass, mushrooms, coconut milk and chili paste. Don’t miss the house specialty, Gaeng Ped Yang, which is a roasted duck served with a red curry base. Blitz Pick: Howard Wang’s Uptown

Best Tex-Mex The reader’s choice for Tex-Mex was Chuy’s and they do serve up a sturdy mess of enchiladas, fajitas, and the usual Tex-Mex suspects. For happy hour order one of the very well-priced margaritas and get an assortment of sauces to go with your chips, including queso, beans and the requisite salsa. Did we mention the prickly pear margarita? Yes, that is terrific. Big portions at a great price tag. Blitz Pick: Desperados Mexican Restaurant

Best Sandwich Jimmy’s Food Store makes the best sandwiches in Dallas. Look to this tiny true Italian market located in a rugged section of East Dallas which once was the Little Italy of Dallas. Now standing solo, it offers plenty of great Italian ingredients and the largest selection of Italian wines in the state of Texas. Check out the deli located in the back of the building and grab one of the many sandwich selections such as the Italian Stallion, house-made meatball subs or the best muffaletta outside of New Orleans. Blitz Pick: Uncle Uber’s Sammich Shop

Best Steakhouse

Best Italian Restaurant Jimmy’s Food Store is back on the list, this time as your favorite Italian restaurant. Although not a typical Italian restaurant and more of a market, you can find homemade pastas, the best price on Parmeggiano Reggiano, and the most terrific home-made meatballs ever. There’s also some fine Italian pastries baked in house. Blitz Pick: Lucia

Best Barbecue Pecan Lodge is definitely our finest BBQ haunt in Dallas. Pecan Lodge is located at its new location in Deep Ellum with expanded service, bar service and always a line to dine. The brisket is moist and supple with its obligatory smoke ring and juicy bits of fat striations throughout. Go for the house-made jalapeno sausage, it is amazing stuff. Most forget that they also make a hell of a good fried chicken. Order that as a side to the BBQ. Blitz Pick: Pecan Lodge

Best Seafood Your choice for best seafood is Big Shucks, and it is actually very good. Look for a lot of fried fare such as fried oysters, catfish and shrimp, but the place also serves up oysters on the half shell, and in season one of the better messes of crawfish around. Gumbo! Blitz Pick: Rex’s Seafood Market

Best Comfort Food

Bob’s Steak and Chop House is a sturdy steakhouse choice with several locations in Dallas and Plano. The original was opened in the 1990s by Bob Sambol who excelled on service with the theory that if he made a great steak people would return. He also plated the steaks with his legendary single carrot which is still in practice to this day.

Babe’s Chicken is one of those places that has become legend over time. There are many locations around Dallas and Fort Worth, and is a relative to Bubba’s in Park Cities. Here you will be served fried chicken family style with a choice of side such as from scratch mashed potatoes and creamed corn. Do not miss out on the freshly baked biscuits. Pass on the watered down plain lettuce salad.

Blitz Pick: Nick & Sam’s Steakhouse

Blitz Pick: Sissy’s Southern Kitchen & Bar

Best Local Beer Deep Ellum Brewing Company might be the little microbrewery that could in spite of all the controversy that surrounds it. Sure it has changed brewmasters. Some of the brews have even been temporarily retired. It has even endured the tagline for its Dallas Blonde ale: “Goes Down Easy.” DEBC is our reader’s favorite and that’s all that matters. If you’re a novice we recommend their Deep Ellum IPA. Blitz Pick: Franconia Brewing Company

Best Beer Selection

Big Shucks, Big Sword

15

Want beer? Want a hella large beer selection? The Ginger Man on Boll Street has been serving up just that in DFW for many years, way before beer was made locally and uber cool. Walk in The Ginger Man and you will enter this portal which seemingly transports you to an English pub, replete with its dark woods and even darker lighting. There are plenty of brews on draught and in bottles made from breweries here locally and around the world. So if you like beer, head

over to The Ginger Man, which will be happy to serve your needs. Blitz Pick: The Flying Saucer Addison

Best New Restaurant Our readers selected Blind Butcher as restaurant of the year, and this is saying plenty as we had so many new restaurants in Dallas which could have easily taken this title. Here you will enjoy a huge selection of amazing draft beers and cocktails. The chef makes these crazy good sausages of many varieties and serves up a whole host of poutine, that odd potato, cheese curd and gravy transplant from Canada. The version with the duck is amazing. No, super amazing. Order anything on the menu and you will be most pleased and possibly even humbled. Blitz Pick: Table 13

Best Breakfast The breakfast at Oddfellows is big, bold and yes, a bit beautiful. Located in Bishop Arts among many fine bars and restaurants, Oddfellows has a giant menu to please anyone. We love the red velvet pancakes, the duck chilaquiles, and the chicken and waffles. Probably the finest example of chicken and waffles in Dallas. Do not forget to order up a basket of Oddfellows beignets for the table. Even if you are by yourself. Blitz Pick: Oddfellows

Best Food Truck The food truck scene in Dallas hasn’t been as glorious as it should be. Most likely because the city has its head up its ass about the various laws and restrictions placed on the mobile kitchens. But we still manage to have some seriously delicious fare coming out of a few trucks in Dallas, including your choice, Cajun Tailgators. Look for some cool food straight from Louisiana, and done up right. Definitely order the crawfish pistolette, a dough that is stuffed and fried into little balls of lusciousness. Also a great gumbo, po boy and fried gator. Blitz Pick: Easy Slider Truck WWW.BLITZWEEKLY.COM

DECEMBER 2014

ARTISAN OF THE YEAR Jaap van Zweden – You can tell by the name alone that this musician wasn’t Texas-bred but nonetheless, this classical conductor and violinist definitely tugs at our heartstrings. In 1979 at age 18, Dutch born van Zweden was the youngest violinist ever to assume the position of concertmaster in his home city of Amsterdam. Little did he know years later, his talents would take him across the pond to America, securing the role of music director for the Dallas Symphony through 2016.

VOL. 7 - ISSUE 11

MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN DALLAS Holly McCracken Quartaro – The Galleria Dallas pulled out the really big guns when it hired stylist and PR guru Holly Quartaro as its brand ambassador. You may have been “shushed” as your significant gawked at her on-trend fashion tips and tricks featured on Good Morning Texas and Good Day segments. Nevertheless, there is one reason that will keep this name etched in your mind; she recently was nominated the ‘Most Beautiful Woman in Dallas’ by D Magazine. Blitz Pick: Lauren Scruggs

Blitz Pick: Fredrik Broden

BEST BAR The Standard Pour – Don’t let the name fool you, there is nothing even remotely standard about this pub. The brunch and dinner menu at The Standard Pour can easily conquer any ‘hangry’ patron’s appetite, but it doesn’t stop there. The Pour has a full bar that serves the most creative drinks and tap around. Be sure to try the Moscow Mule – a concoction of vodka, ginger beer and lime juice served in a solid copper mug. Blitz Pick: Proof + Pantry

MOST STYLISH MAN Chuck Steelman – The name Chuck Steelman may or may not ring a bell but the name Neiman Marcus should definitely ring a couple. The PR genius behind the luxury department store’s chic public relations campaigns surprisingly finds time to also lend his expertise as regional director to another big name in Dallas, Fashion Group International. Steelman’s impeccable style, perfectly tailored getups and well-coifed hair, proves that he has Neiman Marcus flowing though his veins. Blitz Pick: Jack Son of Fluent

BEST LIVE MUSIC VENUE House of Blues Dallas – If you’re a concertgoer, chances are that you’ve been here at least once. The who’s who of music industry aims to rock the crowd at this venue, without all cheesy concert fluff. From concerts, dining and private event rooms, this place is where gritty hooks up with high class and gives birth to a hipster vibe. If you’ve never been, you either A.) Are not from the Dallas area or B.) You’re not a music fanatic. Blitz Pick: Gas Monkey Bar N’ Grill

BEST FESTIVAL Big Texas Beer Fest – There are only two things that Texans love more than the Dallas Cowboys: good food and good beer. So it should come as no surprise that this festival draws hundreds of beer enthusiasts all waiting to sample the best 400 homegrown brews that 90 North Texas breweries have to offer. If you need to suppress that newly acquired beer buzz, the festival boasts plenty of food trucks and artisanal food to rev your engine. Blitz Pick: Deep Ellum Arts Festival

SMARTER, SHARPER MEN

BEST LOCAL CHARITY Susan G. Komen – This infamous non-profit is in the business of breasts and doesn’t discriminate. Black, white, big and small, they love them all. For 365 days a year, the Susan G. Komen organization promotes breast cancer awareness and provides support to individuals affected by this disease. The pink ribbons have become a symbol of support to millions who have been afflicted with this stealthy cancer, that has become an increasingly common diagnosis in women and men 35 years and older. Blitz Pick: 20 Causes 20 Days

DECEMBER 2014

BEST DIVE BAR Double Wide – If you are looking for the most random place to grab a stiff drink or an ice cold brewskie while jamming out to some of the hottest bands in Dallas, then this is your new playground. When saying the words Double Wide, you shouldn’t think glitzy building in the middle of downtown. Nope. This establishment stays true to its name, shaking up the traditional bar scene with its blue-collar theme, which fans are totally digging.

VOL. 7 - ISSUE 11

PERSON OF THE YEAR Wendy Davis – Whether you did or didn’t vote in this year’s gubernatorial election, you would have to be living six feet under to not know who Wendy Davis is. As a rising star in the Democratic Party, Davis has stood up to her opposition and fought for what she believes in. No really. She has literally stood for hours on end in a 13-hour filibuster, on behalf of women in Texas who don’t have that same platform. Blitz Pick: Wendy Davis

Blitz Pick: Lee Harvey’s

BEST NEW MUSIC ARTIST BEST SPORTS BAR Bryan Street Tavern – If you’ve been here, then you know that this tavern has some of the best food and brews around. If you haven’t, then you are missing out. Dieters beware; you will be enticed by some of the best pizza and burgers around. You can’t forget to wash away all of your foodie sins after browsing a menu of 20+ local beers on tap and $4 you-call-it specials.

Wesley Geiger – Wesley Geiger’s folk sound reminds you of both the day when songs were simpler and the future of music. Reminiscent of Neil Young, Geiger is releasing a nine-song album produced by local legend Beau Patrick Bedford titled El Dorado, at the Kessler on November 28th at 8 p.m. His vocals are only half of the treat. Wesley will be backed by six-piece band The Texas Gentleman, followed by performances from The Orbans and Somebody’s Darling. Blitz Pick: Luke Wade

Blitz Pick: San Francisco Rose

BEST GUILTY PLEASURE Bone Daddy’s House of Smoke – This restaurant’s unconventional way of serving up the most traditional barbeque favorites with a twist has made it a fan favorite. Immediately upon stepping into Bone Daddy’s you realize that you are not walking into your momma’s BBQ restaurant. From Smokehouse Meat Platters to flying pig sandwiches, scantily clad hostesses serve patrons “fall-off-the-bone” meat that keeps hungry carnivores coming back for more. Blitz Pick: Twin Peaks

BEST HAPPY HOUR Sherlock’s Addison – If you are looking for a pub that just gets to the point, then this is your place. The food menu offers way more than frilly bites, while cleverly capitalizing on traditional bar favorites. Pub Wings and Chicken Alfredo Pasta are two popular mainstays on the roster, and what would a pub be without having some of the best drink menus around? Non-existent. Lucky for Sherlock’s, it offers some of the best “adult beverages” around. Blitz Pick: Gin Mill

BEST PATIO Katy Trail Ice House – The allure of this place is not just the décor but also the layout of the building, namely the bar patio. When it’s 90 degrees at 11 p.m. on a summer’s night, who doesn’t want to jet to the patio to sip a cold beer or take a “mystery shot” with your buddies? If you raised your hand in objection, you’re sadly alone pal; patio drinking is just the Texas way. Blitz Pick: Ozona Grill & Bar

BEST LOCAL MUSIC RELEASE Sarah Jaffe – You could probably name more than a few reasons why Jaffe’s “fan base cup” is spilling over these days, but No. 1 should be her voice. The sultry confidence projected from the rich tone and vibrato of her vocals in ‘Don’t Disconnect’ is unmistakable, simple and genius. This is definitely the soundtrack to a day of deep thought on the couch, complete with a muted television, while throwing back a couple of bottles of beer. Blitz Pick: Good Morning Bad Day by TEAM* Wesley Gelger dares you not to clap at his next performance SMARTER, SHARPER MEN

Best SPORTS IN Dallas VOL. 7 - ISSUE 11

FAVORITE ATHLETE

Dirk Nowitzki – The Big German once again took home the votes. No other player in DFW sports history has made the financial sacrifices that Dirk Nowitzki has to win a championship. Still a team player, this Mavericks team is his while moving up the all-time scoring chart. We’re looking for a deep playoff run this year! Blitz Pick: Dez Bryant

BEST LOCAL SPORTS RADIO TALK SHOW The Hardline – The Old Grey Wolf and The Snake must have rallied the troops for their afternoon drive time show “The Hardline” to take home their first Blitzie. The dynamic duo has been partnered up since 2009 dropping knowledge and humor on TickHeads and Ticket Chicks in the world of sports and pop culture. We thank them for teaching us all we know about “front-bottom.” Blitz Pick: The G-Bag Nation

19

FAVORITE LOCAL SPORTS TV ANCHOR

Mike Doocy – He’s the sports helmsman for FOX 4 and heads up “Sports Sunday.” When you want a local feel for our teams that is witty and interesting Mike Doocy delivers. He’s seen our big four sports teams at some of their most memorable moments plus some great local college commentary. Highly visible and always polite, he represents what’s best in sports media. Blitz Pick: Newy Scruggs

BEST RADIO SPORTS BROADCASTER Eric Nadel – He is the voice of the Texas Rangers. Some of you old school readers might remember his start in 1979. We like to remember him as the man announcing the Rangers clinching backto-back American League pennants. This year in addition to being the recipient of the prestigious Ford C. Frick award, having his own bobble head, he get’s a Blitzie. Blitz Pick: Chuck Cooperstein

DECEMBER 2014

All I’ve ever wanted was an honest week’s pay for an honest day’s work. I handed in a script last year and the studio didn’t change one word. The word they didn’t change was on page 87. Don’t have sex, men. It leads to kissing and pretty soon you have to start talking to them. There is one thing I would break up over, and that is if she caught me with another woman. I won’t stand for that.

Bits of Wisdom with Steve Martin

I like a woman with a head on her shoulders. I hate necks. First the doctor told me the good news: I was going to have a disease named after me.

Andrew J. Hewett http://chewednews.blogspot.com/ “DADDY TASTES AWFUL!” Fellows, if you like nice, loving, tender women, be glad you never met Katherine Mary Knight. She’s now serving a life sentence without parole in Australia for killing her de facto husband by stabbing him 37 times, decapitating him, skinning him, hanging his skin on a meat hook, cooking his body parts and preparing meals (including vegetables and gravy) with the meat, intending to feed him to his children.

TRY CRAIGSLIST MAYBE? After an accident and infection, Dutchman Leo Bonten, 53, had to have his leg removed in June 2004. And, rather than have it incinerated, he took it home and had a floor lamp made from it. Next, he tried selling his leg-lamp for €100,000, but the listing was removed because eBay’s policy bans the sale of body parts. DID HE HAVE ALL HIS SHOTS? After driving his car through two backyards in Washington Township, Ind., and getting it stuck in the second, Jonathan Thomas, 50, showed his teeth to police and later growled at hospital security staff. Arrested on a DUI charge, Thomas, director of the Porter County Animal Shelter, said he drinks because of the homeless animals he cares for every day.

Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21 The girl you end up taking out on a date will politely thank you for paying for dinner and inform you that she is indeed married.

Pisces: February 19 - March 20 At your family Christmas dinner your mom will let you know that your dad’s pull out game is weak.

Gemini: May 21 - June 21 Your sweet tooth will go to a whole new level when you start taking swigs of maple syrup.

Capricorn: December 22 - January 19 How does it feel to get fat burner pills for Christmas?

Aries: March 21 - April 19 Relax. It’s OK to receive more calls from people who’ve dialed the wrong number than people you know.

Cancer: June 22 - July 22 Your girl will pretend to be reading Braille while touching your chest acne.

Taurus: April 20 - May 20 You’ll soon find out that one of your girlfriend’s Google searches was “should I admit to cheating or just dump him?”

Leo: July 23 - August 22 You’ll walk into your bathroom only to find your dad passed out with his pants around his ankles.

Aquarius: January 20 - February 18 After watching The Walking Dead while in bed, you’ll hear a noise in the kitchen. You’ll tell yourself that you’re just imagining things. The next morning you’ll find out you’ve actually been robbed.

21

Virgo: August 23 - September 22 It might be true that God created you in His likeness. It also might be true that He was feeling crappy that day.

Libra: September 23 - October 22 Your financial situation will take a turn for the worse when you discover that there isn’t any loose change between the sofa cushions.

Scorpio: October 23 - November 21 Your colonoscopy will certainly tell you what you’re made of.

20 Years Later, Still a Bad Mother*&$@# Twenty facts on Quentin Tarantino’s ultimate love letter to Hollywood, Pulp Fiction The F-Bomb made 265 appearances in the film – Quentin gives lots of Fucks. iramax forgot to get the licensing rights for M the first batch of movie posters (Uma Thurman smoking Lucky Stripes cigarettes next to the book The Harlot and the Heart). Lucky Stripe threatened legal action and the posters were scrapped, thus making them collector’s items. While Jules’ righteous execution speech pulls from Ezekiel 25:17, the only part that is actually from Ezekiel, “And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger. And you will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee.” The rest is all QT’s doing. All but one clock in the entire film is set to 4:20. The actor, who played the manager in the diner is credited in the film only as “Coffee Shop.” The editors had a bit of fun with it because his line gets cut off before he can finish. We only hear him say, “I’m not a hero, I’m just a coffee shop—” The dance trophy that Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) “won” was actually reported stolen later on in the film.

Men Get Your LIFE Back

Vincent’s ’64 Chevelle Malibu was QT’s personal car. The sweet ride was stolen during production and wasn’t recovered until 2013 when cops caught two teenagers stripping it.

Feel 10, 20 even 30 years younger Be Ready Every Time She is......

Butch’s (Bruce Willis) girlfriend’s Honda Civic also makes appearances in QT’s films, Jackie Brown and Kill Bill: Vol. 2.

Jule’s wallet, the now infamous Bad-Mother Fucker, actually belonged to QT and he told Samuel L. Jackson to use it for the scene.

Tarantino had to convince Uma Thurman to play the role of Mia Wallace, which she originally turned down, by reading her the script over the phone. Restaurant bandit “Honey Bunny’s” name was the name of Linda Chen, the woman who typed up QT’s handwritten screenplay, pet rabbit. She asked Tarantino to watch the critter while she went on location, he didn’t and the rabbit died. Long story short he named the character after the dead rabbit. Vincent says his convertible Chevelle Malibu, which was kept in storage while he was on vacation in Amsterdam, was keyed by some “dickless piece of shit.” Tarantino has since stated that Butch is responsible for keying Vincent’s car. In the scenes where Tarantino is playing the role of Jimmy Dimmick, the film is being directed by Robert Rodriguez. He would go on to collaborate with QT many times including directing From Dusk Till Dawn, Grindhouse, and Machete. Seinfeld’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus auditioned for the role of Mia, but ultimately pulled out because of her commitment to the sitcom.

Vincent’s famous line, “Oh man, I shot Marvin in the face” did not appear in the screenplay and was improvised by Travolta.

When John Travolta showed up to Tarantino’s apartment to discuss the role, he was surprised to find out it was the exact apartment he had lived in when he moved to Hollywood 20 years earlier.

Mia Wallace’s failed television pilot, Fox Force Five, closely paralleled Tarantino’s Kill Bill characters. Don’t believe us? Google it.

The iconic Band Aid on the back of Marcellus Wallace’s (Ving Rhames) head wasn’t supposed to be part of the film. Rhames cut himself shaving his head and QT thought the bandage made Wallace appear more “mercurial.”

The “Gimp” served as inspiration for the Stig on the high-octane car show on the BBC, Top Gear. Boardwalk Empire’s Steve Buscemi, a Reservoir Dogs alum, played the waiter in the Jack Rabbit Slim scene. BONUS: What’s in the briefcase you ask? Well, QT wanted the contents of the case to be whatever the viewer imagined, but in actuality it was two batteries and a light bulb. The plot device is called a MacGuffin.
