Everyone wants to give back, Erik Jorgensen makes it more than words BY CORY CARLYLE – COMMENTS@BLITZWEEKLY.COM

of good to help a lot of people.’ She was usually a pretty straight-forward person, so when I asked what I was doing to help a lot of people, her response was a bit out-of-character. She said “you know what, Erik? I’m not going to tell you what you were doing. But just know that this is what I want from you in life and this is what will make me happy.’” Since he was a college kid at the time, the power of her words did not resonate as they were likely intended. However, as he cleaned out her estate, he was able to relive their entire lives together courtesy of old pictures, drawings, mementos, and countless other memory-inducing artifacts. It was during this time that Jorgensen recalled this conversation. “I began to think and explore possible ways to honor my mom’s dream,” he said. “Many things crossed my mind, but nothing really jumped out at me. That said, I also wanted to accomplish a few other personal goals at the same time. I wanted to challenge myself, do things that were far out of my comfort zone, do something that had never been done before and learn new things all while fulfilling my mom’s wish.” He tried to think outside the box and come up with ideas that could possibly be in line with what his mother had envisioned. Then one day, it all clicked. “One morning around Halloween 2009, I remember awakening suddenly at 6 a.m. and sitting up in bed. I said four words to myself that scared the crap out of me. 20 Causes, 20 Days,” he continued. “I said it again. The fact that it scared me so much made me realize that this was it. A project like this accomplishes everything that I wanted to accomplish personally, while ultimately fulfilling mom’s dream from that day in Tahoe.” After successfully kicking off the project in Sacramento in 2009, Jorgensen would go on to blog about each experience with the various charities. He moved to North Texas after being offered the opportunity to be the in-stadium DJ for the Dallas Cowboys. In addition to his duties at AT&T Stadium, Jorgensen is the DJ for SMU football, the Central Hockey League champion Allen Americans and the Indoor Football League’s Texas Revolution and he has a full-time job.

The beauty of Dallas resident Erik Jorgensen’s ‘20 Causes, 20 Days’ lies in its simplicity of how taking time out of one’s day to help someone else in need actually ends up benefiting both parties. Jorgensen takes 20 days each summer and donates his time to 20 different Dallas-Fort Worth area charities. It’s a vehicle to inspire others in North Texas to donate their time to causes they are passionate about and show others they can indeed make a difference in other people’s lives.

20 Causes, 20 Days started in 2009 when Jorgensen was going through his late mother’s estate in Lake Tahoe, Nev. He recalled a conversation from when he was attending college and had gone to her home to pay a visit. “I asked her why she was so chipper,” Jorgensen said. “She answered ‘Erik, I just had the best dream about you.’ I asked her what the dream was about and she replied, ’You were doing a lot

While many people would justifiably consider this schedule to be a full plate, Jorgensen decided to relaunch his 20 Causes, 20 Days initiative in the DFW area last summer by reaching out to local charities and simply volunteering his time. Since he received 21 responses, Jorgensen opted to do a bonus 21st day rather than turn down the chance to lend his time to those less fortunate. “A big thing I hope to accomplish with 20 Causes, 20 Days is to show people who may think that they don’t have any free time that if they just make the time to help others, it will be one of the most satisfying experiences of their lives,” Jorgensen said. “While last year’s (20 Causes) was amazing and very successful, this year the idea is to take things an entirely new level of investing time and energy in making your community and your life better.” A new wrinkle added to this year’s initiative involves Jorgensen involving local people of note to join him and volunteer their time to causes of their choice. Once he has received the commitment of the people’s particular causes and times they are available, he will work alongside the charitable cause to set everything up and make it come to fruition. Some of the causes Jorgensen volunteered his time to in 2013 included DFW Rescue Me, Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center, Genesis Women’s Shelter, North Texas Food Bank, Mark-9 Search and Rescue, Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, the Stewpot, Paws in the City, Trinity River Audubon Center, Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Prevent Blindness Texas, Dallas County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Texas Trees Foundation, VNA of Texas Meals on Wheels, and the Friends of Katy Trail. A cause that has special meaning to Jorgensen is the American Diabetes Association-North Texas since that is the disease that took his mother’s life. plus Cooperstown-bound stars like Tim Raines, Pedro Martinez, and Vladimir Guerrero. In 1999, the Expos’ local ownership group was short on cash and that’s when current Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria purchased a 24 percent stake for $12 million. In his first speech as owner of the Expos Loria demanded a new stadium be built for his team, one that was purposed as a baseball-only facility. City officials made it clear that a new stadium would not be built or financed when millions were still owed on the existing Olympic Stadium.

LOST IN TRANSLATION How a City Saw its Franchise Dissolved BY LANCE RINKER – @LANCEMRINKER Franchise Record: 2,755-2,943-4 (1969 to 2004) Playoff Record: 5-5 World Series Titles: 0 National League Pennants: 1 (1994) Playoffs: 1 (1981) Franchise Players: Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Vladimir Guerrero, Pedro Martinez, Tim Raines, Steve Rogers, Rusty Staub, Jose Vidro It’s been 10 years since the Expos last played in Montreal and 20 years since that 1994 Montreal Expos team was lighting the baseball world on fire, playing as if a World Series Championship was a near certainty, before the strike spelled the beginning of the end for the franchise. For a major league franchise that had spent nearly half of its existence playing .500 or better baseball, always competing, and almost always leading the National League in attendance this was an absolute shame. With a metropolitan area population of nearly

four million people, Montreal currently is the largest North American city without a baseball franchise. Montreal also is the 13th largest media market in North America according to the TV Basics Report covering 2013-14, higher than the majority of all cities currently home to a Major League Baseball franchise. The history of baseball in Montreal dates back to the Montreal Royals’ first season in 1897. In the 1940s and 50s, Delorimier Stadium was home to the likes of Don Drysdale, Roberto Clemente, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, and the unforgettable Jackie Robinson while the Royals served as the Brooklyn Dodgers’ farm club until their demise in 1960. It wasn’t until 1969 that the Expos became Major League Baseball’s first non-U.S. franchise and went on to entertain the city for 36 seasons, many of which thrilled a passionate fan base with Hall of Famers Gary Carter and Andre Dawson,

However, the city did begin to warm to the idea of a new stadium and even had LaBatt Park designed. It was ready to be built using a combination of public and private financing and was expected to be ready for the 2002 season. Loria balked at the proposal and demanded that the city pay a higher percentage of the building costs. The city grew tired of trying to work with Loria and canceled the project altogether. The following season Loria demanded an increase in broadcast rights fees that was so great there was no English-speaking radio or television stations financially capable or willing to broadcast Expos games. The team was essentially blacked out in their own local market by the owner. Over the next couple of years Loria bought out the majority of the general partners by way of pouring $18 million into the Expos, boosting payroll and triggering cash calls that the other owners failed to answer. By 2002, he owned 94 percent of the club. That same year the other general partners accused Loria of conspiring with the league to move the franchise. In a racketeering suit filed in Miami, they claimed he set out to terminate the viability of baseball in Montreal by sabotaging media rights deals and efforts to build a new stadium. Loria denied the allegations, and the other owners did not pursue the claims after an arbitration panel later found that Loria acted within his contractual rights. Later that year, Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig performed a double switch. The league’s other 29 owners took

5

over the Expos, paying Loria and his partners $120 million, and eventually moved them to Washington, D.C. Florida Marlins owner John Henry then sold his team to Loria for $158.5 million, with a $38.5 million interest-free loan from the league. Henry then led a group that bought the Boston Red Sox for $660 million. Earlier this spring Montreal got its first taste of baseball in more than a decade when the Toronto Blue Jays hosted the New York Mets on March 29. Nearly 100,000 fans packed Olympic Stadium for Major League Baseball for the entire world to see. It lit up the city, and baseball became the topic of conversation in Montreal once again. There were representatives from Major League Baseball at the game, and their words spoke volumes about how the world took notice. “I’m going to tell Commissioner Bud Selig that things were better than even I expected and that I was very, very, favorably impressed. There is a fire that burns brightly here for Major League Baseball and that’s a message that I’ll be proud to carry to the commissioner,” said MLB executive John McHale Jr. It’s possible that baseball could find its way back to Montreal as a recently-published feasibility report proved Montreal could support a major league franchise economically. It would be unlikely to occur by way of expansion though, and instead would rely on an existing franchise to relocate. In an exclusive interview given to Jon Paul Morosi for FoxSports.com, Tampa Bay Rays owner Stuart Sternberg said that he knows Major League Baseball could work again in Montreal. How does he know? “My gut. I was at Olympic Stadium the day after they got Bartolo Colon. I’ve been convinced — this is before I bought the (Rays) — that it would be an incredible place for baseball. That doesn’t mean my baseball team, but a baseball team.” The Tampa Bay Rays lease in St. Petersburg for their current stadium doesn’t expire until 2027, which gives credence to the thought that a new baseball-only stadium could be built in Montreal with the goal of luring the Rays there for the 2028 season.

FIGHT CLUB

UFC 175 Preview BY LANCE LEVAN – @LANCELEVAN1

(C) Chris Weidman (11-0-0) vs. (No. 3) Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (21-4-0) This is a middleweight (185 pounds) title fight. Weidman has been the champion since July 2013 after beating long-reigning champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva. In his first title defense, Weidman had a rematch with Silva and beat him again. Machida has fought almost everyone there is to fight at middleweight. AND he’s beaten most of them. Machida worked his way up and eventually won the light heavyweight title in December 2011. So both of these fighters know what it is like to be on a stage this big. Neither of them will be starry-eyed or caught up in the aura of the Octagon. Both of these guys are high-level Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners. Both of them are pretty good strikers also. Weidman has a strong background in wrestling and Machida has a very strong background in Karate. I think Machida will want to keep the fight standing, but he will have a hard time keeping Weidman from taking him down. In the end…as much as I really like Machida, I think Weidman is going to be too much for him to handle. My prediction: Weidman via TKO in the fourth round.

(C) Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey (9-0-0) vs. (No. 2) Alexis Davis (16-5-0) This is a women’s bantamweight (135 pounds) title fight. As always, this will be an incredible fight to watch because of Rousey…but my interest is to see if this next challenger is going to do her homework and be able to defend against the champion’s arm-bar submission, which has been her signature move for eight of her nine professional fights. On paper, I am not really certain that Davis should be in this title bout. But Dana White and the UFC are finding it hard pressed to locate fighters who can challenge Rousey, a world-class Judo fighter. Davis is a black belt in jiujitsu and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Trust me when I say this fight definitely will go to the ground. It will be very interesting to see these two battle it out on the mat. I have not seen much of Davis’ ground game, but having a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu from Cesar Gracie says a lot about her skills. I think a lot of this fight will come down to which fighter is more aggressive. I have to give that edge to Rousey. My prediction: Rousey wins this fight via submission (arm-bar) in the first round.

(No. 2) Urijah “The California Kid” Faber (30-7-0) vs. (No. 12) Alex “Bruce Leeroy” Caceres (10-5-0, 1NC) This bantamweight fight is going to be extremely entertaining. Both of these fighters like to throw punches, even though Caceres has a high percentage of his fights being won by submission. Faber is one of those guys who has unlimited cardio and will push the pace for the entire three rounds. I am not sure that Caceres has fought anyone of Faber’s caliber yet…so I am very interested to see how he handles this type of pressure and experience. Faber will have to deal with someone a decade younger with something to prove. Since Faber is a wrestler and a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and Caceres is pretty skilled in submissions, this will be a very interesting fight on the ground. In the end, I have to give the fight to the wrestler (who has three times as many fights). My prediction: Faber wins by TKO in the second round.

TV personality. Pageant beauty. Attorney. Hot Mom. Wife of Tight End Ryan Neufeld. You may have caught a glimpse of her Mrs. America Pageant (you could call it the “Foxy Wives Club”), on KTXD’s The Broadcast talk show, or on VH1’s Football Wives, the name Dawn Neufeld might ring a bell. But, did you know she was a force in the courtroom as well? This quintuple-threat is not only beautiful, she’s incredibly smart. After visiting with Dawn, our favorite quality was how refreshingly down-to-Earth she turned out to be. SMARTER, SHARPER MEN

awn isn’t new to the TV circuit, we soon learned. “I’ve been doing TV-related things since I was little. I always had a passion for acting. Since I was a little girl, I actually thought my first car was going to be a limo because I wanted to be a movie star when I grew up!” The native Californian was bitten by the acting bug at a young age and even trained early on with the Al Fann Theatrical Ensemble and Kevin McDermott’s Center Stage L.A., which led her to landing several roles in TV shows and plays across the state. Always focused on not just being pretty, but smart and educated as well, Dawn took a break in junior high and high school to focus on academics (so she could get into a good college of course). During her stint at UCLA, the college beauty became incredibly interested in journalism and media, going on to finish her first degree in Communication Studies. One degree just wasn’t enough for the Cali girl. After landing a coveted spot in UC Davis’ prestigious law school, Dawn went on to become a force in the courtroom while practicing law at the L.A.-based firm Ivie, McNeil and Wyatt before moving to Buffalo, N.Y., with her college sweetheart and new husband Ryan, a talented football tight end. “Even though I could have taken advantage of the industry in L.A., I decided I wanted to focus on my studies,” said Dawn, “I was really influenced by movies and television! I loved the stories about tough lawyers protecting the little guys, or girls you could say, from the big guys. Shows like L.A. Law made me want to go to law school to understand what justice was all about.” The seriously smart law student passed the California State Bar Exam on her first try. Her husband Ryan, who played for our very own Dallas Cowboys in 1999, was picked up by the Buffalo Bills in 2003, prompting Dawn to get back into the limelight. “It wasn’t until we got to Buffalo, surprisingly, when I met my former acting coach Frank Rossi. Being in his classes renewed my passion for acting and being on film.” Rossi, Dawn’s acting guru, has coached hundreds of actors in New York and Los Angeles including stars who’ve appeared in Safe with Jason Statham, Adventureland with Kristin Stewart, How I Met Your Mother, Days of Our Lives and American Reunion. In 2007, Ryan’s career with the Bills came to an end and the Neufeld crew returned to Dallas. “One of the great things about Dallas is that even though it’s a big city, you can feel a part of it…it feels like a town. You really feel like a part of the community here,” said Dawn, “We’re both from California and we knew we didn’t want to move back there. We fell in love with Frisco and stayed ever since!” Itching to become a TV and movie star, Dawn dove head first into the local TV scene, all the while establishing her legal career in her new hometown. “When I got back to Dallas, I was able to get an agent and was on a show called The Bike which was broadcast in restaurants across the country,” she said. Always up for a challenge, Dawn started participating in beauty pageants as well. In 2009 after she had just taken the Texas Bar Exam, she was anxiously awaiting her results. “It was driving me crazy, literally crazy,” she said. I figured I needed something to help me pass time. I had a 1 year old at the time and [I thought to myself] what better way to get back in shape than to wear a bikini on stage! That was when I decided to join the Mrs. America Pageant.” It was a challenge for her, but it proved to be a wonderful way to stay in shape while bringing awareness to autism, a condition that her son faces, through a national platform. She continues to compete in pageants to this day. “For some strange reason I keep going back. I love being around those woman, they are so positive and accomplished,” said Dawn. “It challenges me and I think that’s why I keep going back.” In 2010, Football Wives came along and since her husband Ryan played for the NFL for seven years, she was an obvious candidate for the show. Reality was a big departure from her previous acting gigs. “Reality TV is hard! You’re forced to be very open sometimes and that’s uncomfortable,” she said, “There was a night where we filmed until 3 a.m. and I had to be in court the next morning at 8:30! Throughout this entire time I was still practicing law, so I was trying to find a balance between the two. Boy that was fun!”

Dawn continues to stay close with the girls on the show, except for Pilar, who some could call the most dramatic one of the bunch. “Now, I could pick up the phone and call any of them, with the exception of Pilar; we didn’t get along at all,” Dawn said. Living the lavish life during filming and creating new friendships with her fellow Wives was Dawn’s favorite part. Staying in five-star hotels with limo service during their cast trips to NYC can’t be all that bad. Living your life in front of millions of viewers can have its ups-and-downs. “My least favorite part of being on the show was dealing with people on social media,” she said. “You can never prepare for cyber bullying. I call it ‘Twitter Balls’, people hiding behind the internet.” Cyber bullies are a necessary evil for reality TV stars in the limelight, keeping up on social media is how you build your fan base and keep people tuned in to the show. Dawn recounts a particularly harsh cyber bullying moment, where a viewer attacked her and her autistic son Will. “I had someone say to me on Twitter that my son Will was my karma for me being a bitch, she said. “It was horrible. Imagine that happening every day, a few times a day. If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face, then you shouldn’t be saying it at all. “The girls and I did eight episodes together and didn’t get signed for a second season, which was fine with me,” said Dawn. The beautiful mom of two struggled with juggling her wifely duties, taking care of two children (one with autism), and maintaining her law practice, all while being filmed eight hours a day. “It all comes down to being authentic and staying true to who you are,” she said. “As long as you’re doing that, you’ll be the best person you can be and you will have no regrets.” Many reality TV stars leave the set big-headed, with a reel of publicly humiliating moments, but Dawn’s experience was different. She remains refreshingly down-to-Earth and humble. Post-Football Wives, Dawn continues to stay in front of the camera. A host and legal commentator on KTXD’s The Broadcast, she also frequently emcees charity and community events and shows off her killer body in local beauty pageants. The reigning Mrs. Frisco America, the quintuple-threat also placed in the top five at the Mrs. Texas pageant, a pageant where America’s hottest wives compete. She’s a member of The Junior League of Dallas and always stays involved with a cause that’s close to her heart, Autism Speaks, an autism advocacy organization that sponsors research and conducts awareness and outreach activities. She also continues to stay connected to her fellow football wives through a national association called Off the Field. This hot mom of two spends her time with her kids Will and Bryn, along with her husband Ryan, in her downtime while preparing to open her own practice that will focus on special education law. “I’m also in the process of writing a book,” she told us during the interview. “It’s about what it’s like to be a football wife and the ups-and-downs of the lifestyle, what it’s like to have a son with autism, and how you need to believe there is always hope.” When we asked her the book’s release date, she giggled and said, “It’s still a work in progress!”

MY LEAST FAVORITE PART OF BEING ON THE SHOW WAS DEALING WITH PEOPLE ON SOCIAL MEDIA. I CALL IT ‘TWITTER BALLS’

Football Wives, picked up by VH1 in 2010, was hyper-focused on the wives and girlfriends behind the sport’s most elite players. The appeal of sneaking behind the scenes into the never-before-seen glamorous, and dramatic, lives of these football spouses was apparent. Starring on the show was All-Pro retired cornerback Deion Sanders’ eccentric wife Pilar, Dallas guard Leonard Davis’ wife Amanda, Denver/ Cleveland/Detroit offensive lineman George Foster’s wife Chanita, Dallas kicker David Buehler’s girlfriend Brittany Pigrenet, retired receiver Rocket Ismail’s wife Melani, Dallas punter Mat McBriar’s wife Erin, Dallas running back Marion Barber’s ex Mercedes Nelson and of course Dawn Neufeld. The show focused on the ladies who “live the life, drive the best cars, live in the biggest mansions, wear designer clothes and jewelry, and travel first class,” but it also showed the less glamorous side of these football wives who were constantly in the limelight. These ladies were constantly faced with their husband’s life-threatening injuries while sometimes struggling to pay their bills. “Enjoy the experience, because that’s what it is,” said Dawn when asked about what she’d like to tell budding reality TV stars. “You get so caught up in the filming and the process that you forget to take it all in. Just keep it real and know at the end of the day [that] they will edit and piece together things to make story lines.”

You have two shows under your belt, what’s next for you?

Home Made Simple: OWN Oprah Winfrey Network

Only God knows what is next. I just have to keep doing my part to be prepared for whatever opportunity may come my way. Do you have plans to open a restaurant in the future? Why or why not? I do think about that from time to time.... you know I grew up in the family restaurants, we have a small chain in Southern California. I know what it takes and I don’t know that I am ready to take that on just yet, but I know that day will come. Why do you think food is the way to a man’s heart? I think food is the way to everyone’s heart! Who doesn’t want to be fed something delicious! There is something so beautiful and timeless about breaking bread with those that you love. Whether I am with my man, family, friends, or even all of us together, I can’t imagine a better way to fill all of our hearts.

The Tastemaker

Celebrity chef and interior designer, Martita Jara, discusses growing up in the kitchen, changing networks, and how baking bread will get you lasting love. BY AMBER LAFRANCE – ALAFRANCE@BLITZWEEKLY.COM What are three things we don’t know about you? I am super passionate, I love when someone else cooks for me, I hate shopping unless it’s for food and wine. Have you always wanted to be a chef? I’ve always wanted to do something creative! I am an interior designer as well as a chef. Whether I am designing a meal or a room, it’s about understanding how shapes, textures, colors and flavors come together and creating a balance. Favorite memory in the kitchen? So many! I love being in the kitchen with my family, cooking, singing, dancing and drinking wine! But if I had to pick one, I was a little girl, watching my mom make flour tortillas, she makes the best tortillas! What is your favorite dish? I love everything and I am not allergic to anything! But my favorite is anything my mother makes. Everything she cooks makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, like a loved child! How did you feel about being on a reality TV show and it being a competition? It was an incredible experience! I learned so much! SMARTER, SHARPER MEN

I am still in touch with everyone who was a part of the cast, even though we were competing against one another we really became a family and we all had each other’s backs. What is your relationship with the Food Network now? Would you ever go back and are you looking to do any new shows in the future? I have kept in touch with folks at Food Network and of course I will always be open to working on projects with them! You moved from San Diego, why Dallas? My husband has expanded his business this way and that is why we are here. He supports me in all that I do and I support him. What are your favorite places here in Dallas and how has your experience been so far? My favorite place would probably be Whole Foods in Highland Park since I am there about four days a week! Everyone who works there is super nice, they know my name and I know theirs! You are now on the OWN network, how did that come along? Being a part of Food Network Star has opened a lot of doors for me and that is how I got a meeting with the wonderful people at OWN. Everyone there is super kind!

What is it like working with OWN? How is it different from Food Network? I love working with OWN! I have not met a producer, lighting, makeup, cast person, etc. that has not been wonderful! I am so grateful and proud to be a part of OWN. Food Network is different I think in the sense that it is bigger, but OWN is on its way up, growing, doing so well and I love that I get to be a part of that!. You know Food Network was a little guy once as well. What is your favorite piece of advice someone has given to you during your career? My father always has said to me “You work today as if tomorrow’s meal depended on today’s work.” My father has taught me a million things. I may write a book one day on all the things my father has taught me. What has been the biggest challenge in your career and how did you overcome it? The biggest challenge I would say is not getting discouraged, because sometimes you hear a lot of “no” in this business and I think that is true in life in general! But I just keep on hustling, I don’t complain, I am first generation in this country, we came here to work, I understand it is a blessing to have work!

THE RISING STAR TALKS ABOUT STORYTELLING, HER NEW SHOW, AND WHICH CHARTER SHE’D LIKE TO BE IN REAL LIFE. BY ARTHUR BELLFIELD – ASKARTHUR@BLITZWEEKLY.COM Morgana Shaw plays Mab on the hit show Salem, which details the events surrounding and after the infamous Salem Witch trials in the 17th century. Before that she could be seen in movies such as The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghost of Georgia, I Love You Phillip Morris, Secondhand Lions, The Significant Other, as well as in television shows such as Revolution and Friday Night Lights. I had the pleasure of speaking with her while she sat in a secluded Dallas coffee shop engulfed in the sounds of traffic and life. What made you decide to get into acting? MS: That’s a loaded question for me because if you ask my dad he would say that I came out of the womb acting. But, for me, since I was a little girl I was acting, not necessarily in a professional theater or anything because my parents weren’t able to provide me with that type of a background. I’m sorta the black sheep of the

family in the arts. So, they didn’t know anything about that. I made up stories, I pretended that I could read when I couldn’t read and my cousins believed me. My dad believed that I could turn on the tears on a dime, which I could, but I believed that every time I was crying it was for a good reason. I’ve been doing it all my life to be honest with you. I have a passion for it. When I was in school I was way shy, I did it sorta on the secret; in my home in my room with my cousins. I was very shy in high school. So I didn’t really go all out after I graduated high school and that sort of morphed because I had always wanted to be a dancer. I started studying with a choreographer and joined a dance company. Then I got into an automobile accident and I took a film class and an agent signed me. It’s in my heart and my soul. I love it. I love bringing other people, other characters to life. It’s sorta a curse!

JULY 2014

Out of all the characters you’ve played which one would you like to be in real life? MS: You know, I’ve never been asked that question. I love transformation stories. I love strong women, underdogs. My dream role was Gypsy Rose Lee because I loved her story. I loved her perseverance sorta my storyline and determination – don’t tell me no. I’m working on a one-woman show now that’s going to New York about Betty Davis. I don’t know if I would want to go through everything she went through in her life and recreate that. It’s an honor to play her and be that legendary icon and bring her back to life. Again, I’ve never been asked that question before so it’s stumped me. Everybody has bright and darkness inside of them-and the strength and passion inside of a character is what attracts me to them, and finding what makes them tick.. And, Betty Davis was that woman...I can’t even put it into words. Now back to Salem, were you offered the part or did you have to audition? MS: That process was so interesting because I was called in to be put on tape for the casting director, and pretty much told I would have to go to New Orleans to be seen for this. My agent was like “this isn’t guaranteeing you anything but I think it’ll be worth your time” and this is the same casting director for American Horror Story, which I’m a huge fan of.

Brand Development and Creative Marketing 469-877-1533 info@culture-hype.com

Same here...I love AHS. MS: I’m a huge fan of great storytelling. Every audition is a chance to do what you do. You get to show someone else what you’re gifted at and take them to another land, hopefully. That’s what it has to be about. If you’re like “I hope they cast me-pick me pick me” you’re going to be in for a lot of letdowns. It really doesn’t work that way and you’re going to set yourself up for a lot of letdowns. So, I went in and I was the last person that the casting director put on tape here in Dallas. I read for one role and she said would you read for another role. She was taking this to the producers and the network. I was prepared to do the drive. I got a call and was asked my availability for the pilot, and it wasn’t even for the role I auditioned for. That’s nice. I love hearing stories like this. MS: I never had to go back in. This is why it’s so important for actors and I love telling them “Show them something different! Go for your heart.” You can’t always go by a character description, because one of the parts I was reading for was a male servant. Ha! Ha! Ha! MS: You don’t know you can change people’s minds just by bringing truth and finding what you have to bring to the table. And, that’s what they’re looking for. They’re looking for that unique talent that’s not like everybody else that brings it to life! That’s true. MS: It is true, and it’s true in everything!

BY ARTHUR BELLFIELD – ASKARTHUR@BLITZWEEKLY.COM

The Presence Strange, funny, rebellious…Texas-born actor Billy Blair has been many things since he began his Hollywood career in 2009, but the biggest thing he has been is memorable. Billy Blair believes in intensity. Few would doubt that. As he prepares for the release of his latest film, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, one gets the sense this is a man not intimidated by much. He’s stood toe-to-toe with some of the most memorable actors of our time: De Niro, Brolin, Malkovich, Sheen, and Trejo. With Quentin Tarantino-backed Machete already on his résumé, Blair is preparing to transcend the ensemble as he completes postproduction on Dracula’s War and Blood Sombrero, which he helped produce. Aside from being the only man known to have killed both Robert De Niro and Antonio Banderas on film, the enigmatic thespian takes a moment to reflect on his time in front of the lens. I decided to make Blood Sombrero because every actor who gets their own film and becomes a superstar it helps their career, I wanted to go down that road of creating your own buzz! And, as for as making an action film, right now action films are the money maker as opposed to making a drama or comedy. And, on top of that if I’m going to do my own film it can be action packed but let’s get some up and comers, people who are recognized like

Nick Gomez. He’s been in The Walking Dead and the Dexter TV series. I got Stephen Brodie who had a part in The Lone Ranger, and the lead singer of Skid Row in the film. Let’s put some names in there who will actually help sell the movie! The character I’m playing in Blood Sombrero is an ex-rocker, any other rock star whose career has failed because the music business sucks. But, he’s good at being a thief. He’s a professional thief. He gets hired by Lucifer in the film and he has to go after a box that everybody is after. He’s kinda of like a Jack Burton character from Big Trouble in Little China. It’s going to be exciting! When a film comes out on DVD that’s where its at (the proudest moment as an actor). Everybody waits for when a film comes on Netflix or Red Box – that’s when the whole world sees it. I think when that happens the highlight of your career happens, because people are like “You’re that guy!” I’ve got another film coming out next year called The Veil. It has a great cast and features...I don’t know if you know who William Levy is, but he’s big in Mexican culture! He’s like the Brad Pitt of Mexico or Puerto Rico. He does all the Spanish soap operas and was on Dancing With the Stars. Edgar Allen Poe is a distant relative. We didn’t meet my grandfather who is my mother’s father until later years. She was brought up not knowing her father. She was in her 40s when she found him. So, we contacted him and met him. So, that was a whole other family we got to know, and he was like by the way you’re related to Edgar Allen Poe. By the way I have a band called Junk! We have a CD coming out soon and we tend to open for national bands that come through Dallas.

THE DIRECTOR

BUD FORCE BY C. CRAIG PATTERSON – CPATTERSON@BLITZWEEKLY.COM

No one thinks like Bud Force and for the fearless leader of Ultralite Films that’s paying off big time. He understands his place in the pantheon and wants every ad that you see to be a cinematic experience. How did the team come together?

What does it take to stay ahead of the curve?

The primary crew of Ultralite Films has an extensive background in film and visual storytelling. A while back, I was thinking it would be cool to have a group of talented artists join forces and attempt to make the most badass films possible. I met Erich Schlegel who’s covered seven world conflicts, documented the entire length of the Amazon River, and generally just does crazy crap while making great visuals. Then, I started working with Joey Arcisz, a former pro wakeboarder who was making some unreal films, and I was like, “Hey, let’s form a collective and try to slay some cool projects.”

Genuine passion and a willingness to live outside of comfort zones. We’re not all that deep. We just want to make cool stuff.

When you guys have wild ideas - like say diving into the ocean with Manta Rays - how easy is it to get people on board?

SMARTER, SHARPER MEN

It’s pretty easy; I mean it’s in our DNA. We’re all really passionate about what we do and we identify ourselves as adventure/adrenaline junkies. In fact, our slogan is “Crafted to Inspire.” Also, although we make films in a number of genres, our niche is definitely outdoor adventure. Every key member of Ultralite is SCUBA certified, we all fly aerial drones, ice climb, etc, so it’s never an issue to get people on board when we’re working on something cool. Our foundation is built upon working on land, under water, in the air, wherever. That’s what we like to do.

It was decided early on that ego wasn’t going to play a role in this company and the only bad idea is no idea. Our collaboration includes everyone, and we all enjoy bouncing ideas off each other. If we do lock horns on a concept or editing idea, then we battle it out over ping-pong and whiskey.

It’s hard to avoid that some of you guys have big personalities. How do you make sure that “eccentricities” stay in check? I guess we might have big personalities in that we like to go big or go home. We’re not going to work on something unless we’re passionate about it, but I think we’re pretty mellow at the same time. We like to have a good time, but we’re also extremely focused on what we do and the goals at hand. We really try to build each other up and be supportive of everything we’re working on. Everybody has pretty strong skill sets in their specific areas and we respect that. Respect and a lack of ego is key. Would you consider yourself a demanding director? I’m demanding in that we’re only going to make the best product we can possibly make or Ultralite Films isn’t going to make it. But it gets back to the collaboration thing again. Joey and I co-direct most of our projects, and we think a couple brains working on a solution is better than one...and directing and film making is mostly about finding solutions and making things work together. It’s sort of like building a puzzle - a moving puzzle with sound. You get the pieces right and it works, but Mr. Murphy is always waiting around trying to screw you up. How as a company do you all define success? Three things: Being true to ourselves, giving back, and having fun. I guess a warehouse big enough for a half pipe would be pretty good too.

hopping sprees...Dropping millions of dollars on clothes...Sounds intimidating to some, but Lifetime’s Million Dollar Shoppers, Gregg Asher and Tayler Sandvick, are focused and humble. The two met at a Christian Dior event in 2004 and have since been inseparable as partners in high-dollar fashion crime. Together, they use their keen fashion sense and outgoing personalities to take the fashion scene by storm for clients in New York, L.A. and of course their hometown of Dallas. As their professional portfolio expands, so do the endless critics, but these two aren’t easily shaken. Read more as they dish about the prospects of their own TV series spin-off, product lines and fashion collaborations in the works. These two fashion mavens plan to take over the fashion world...one disgustingly rich client at a time. How did you get into personal shopping and where did these clients come from? T: Oh wow! Now that’s a loooonnnngggg story. The gist...I’ve always been into fashion, ALWAYS! I started in college interning as a buyer for a highend boutique then after graduation I worked for Christian Dior. My degree is in journalism and PR so I always wanted to do fashion journalism/ fashion PR and what better place to do that than in the fashion capital of the world, NYC. I started fashion blogging, covering NYC Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, fashion events and parties, etc...and one thing led to another and I began

The CREATIVES

developing relationships in the fashion world and started picking up clients here and there and word of mouth spread, my client base grew, and here I am now!

G: Always had a flare for yard sale shopping as a child with my mother, I just kicked it up a notch in my Manolo’s with Tayler! How did y’all get approached about doing Million Dollar Shoppers? Will there be a second season? T: That was ALL Gregg!! He’s so determined and connected and a fantastic networker...he just made it happen...I just showed up for meetings when he told me to be there! Second season for MDS a no BUT we are in the works for our own spin-off as we speak! Have you both lived in Dallas? G: I’m from a small town in rural Arkansas, moved to Texas after graduation and a short jaunt of college at Arkansas State where I took ballroom dancing, bowling, and a trampoline course! That college education has served me well! T: I actually don’t live in Dallas. I’m full-time NYC. I moved to Dallas right after college because I got married and my husband worked down there. But we were only there for a few years then moved to NYC. We had a house in Highland Park we just recently sold because we were never there except for Erik’s (the hubby) work but now I just come to Dallas to see my family an hour and

half north, fashion events and of course to see Gregg!! Has being on TV changed your relationship with each other?

T: I think it has brought us even that much closer together because we went through such a unique experience together. We just really got to know each other on a much deeper level and I think it heightened our respect and appreciation of each other. Dallas is known for reality TV, what makes your show so different compared to other shows? T: Actually being recognized in public. It still amazes me that strangers know who I am, who we are, and come up to me and tell me how much they love us and the show. It’s very humbling. Would you have done the show without each other? T: Absolutely NOT!!! He’s my other fashion half!! Besides we wouldn’t be a dynamic duo without the other and it certainly would not have been as much fun or entertaining. Gregg lends a certain je ne c’est quoi... G: Tayler was the perfect person for this project, so no! How did y’all meet? Have y’all always been a duo?

T&G: We met 10 years ago at a Dior event and literally have been bff’s ever since. End of story, ha! Advice on how to start your own personal shopping business? How do you develop relationships with designers and brands? What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten? T: Don’t read anything about yourself, remain humble, grateful and always be kind and gracious to everyone. Everyone has haters, how do you deal with yours? T: Honestly, I have them but I haven’t had anything negative as of yet to deal with. Probably because I’m not really famous, ha! And also, I don’t read anything ever about myself. I get my self-worth from my relationship with The Lord and the people who really love me and care about me. It doesn’t hurt that I have an amazing husband who always builds me up and keeps me grounded. But let the nay-sayers say nay and I’ll just keep being Tay...okay, that was cheesy, sorry! What’s next in both of your worlds? T&G: The G&T project! We are sooooo excited about developing our own tv series, as well as our product lines and fashion collaborations. There’s so much in the works and on the horizon it’s hard to juggle it all. But we are so blessed, and so so very grateful...

hen I was a child, which despite the rumors didn’t coincide with the Battle of Gettysburg, things were really different. A Tea Party was a classy, welcome affair. Not a political party whose combined IQ was slightly higher than a softball. There were no mass shootings in malls. Even better? No Nickleback. We did, however, have a genre of music called Summer Songs. If they didn’t have the word “summer” in them, they detailed the fun you could have in this leisurely season. All of it legal. Except for stuff mentioned by Chuck Berry. Which, if you attempted it, got you arrested and charged with the Mann Act. I’m thinking most fondly of Hot Fun in the Summertime by Sly and the Family Stone, Vacation, by The Go Go’s and I Get Around, by The Beach Boys. I particularly love the last one. Which lists fun things like speeding around town, picking up girls and being so cool, even bad guys kept their distance. But I’m getting old. Those activities have been replaced by slamming Metamucil. Hoping the ‘girl’ I pick up has all her original teeth. Plus, the only bad guy I’m trying to scare off now is the one trying to get me into court for a competency hearing. Anyway, yesterday, I checked out Billboard’s Top 10. Surely, I thought, there are new Summer Songs. But there weren’t. Spots one and two are called Fancy and Problem, which don’t reference the season. Plus, the titles

SMARTER, SHARPER MEN

don’t exactly rival George Bernard Shaw. Interestingly enough, both songs feature new rapper, Iggy Azalea. Iggy? Couldn’t she have used a more original, less inflammatory name to steal? Like, “Eva Braun?” Also in on the charts, is the humbly named John Legend with his song All Of Me. I don’t know if Legend’s checked, but that was the name of a song sung by Billie Holiday, a movie starring Steve Martin and, in the Bible, it comes right after Ecclesiastes. And it has nothing to do with summer. It’s also, according to that Bible, An Abomination Before The Lord. But I’ve always felt that way about Legend. Checking the rest of the list, I found one optimistic sign. Occupying spot No. 9 is a song by Calvin Harris called Summer. Which means he at least knows what season it is. I looked Harris up. He’s described as a “Scottish DJ.” Which sounds as paradoxical as “German Stand-Up Comic,” or “Mel Gibson-Movie Star.” Still, though the tune is simplistic, it’s summery. Harris is saying, go out and have fun. Of course, you can’t get sun anymore, because you’ll die of cancer. Or get laid, because you’ll die from an STD. But judging from the tune, clearly you can ingest enough Ecstasy to take down the entire town of Trenton. And dance, until you need a heart valve replacement. However, it’s a new generation. They have plenty of perils awaiting them. So, enjoy yourselves, kids. Have fun. Those scary midterm elections are still months away.
