here are times in every political campaign where the candidate may be tempted to search for his name on the Internet. Well, former ABC and ESPN analyst, Craig James did just that, and was surprised to find his name before the words, “killed five hookers.” Now, in order to effectively Google bomb someone and smear their good name all over the world, there has to be quite a few angry people willing to make this thing happen. A few years ago James’ son, Adam was a receiver for Texas Tech. His coach, Mike Leach, allegedly put Adam in a shed for two hours during practice because he believed the kid was faking a concussion. This alleged abuse became the center of a controversy that resulted in the suspension and firing of Leach shortly before the 2010 Alamo Bowl. Following his firing Leach said that James was using his media influence at ESPN to get more playing time for Adam. Reports then surfaced from position coaches that Adam was just a lazy player with a “sense of entitlement” and that had led to bickering between Leach and James over how much playing time Adam should get. In Leach’s tell-all book, Swing the Sword, there are emails and memos from James’ PR group that spell out all the underhanded ways in which James was planning to use ESPN as a platform to tell about Adam’s alleged abuse story and get Leach fired. There’s even a section detailing how the PR firm went onto blogs and message boards under pseudonyms to incite anger against Leach. It’s seriously devious reading. Well, as all this information came out James was still calling games and the people became increasingly annoyed. This past December college football fans joined together and called for ESPN to fire James. They accused him of being an unlikeable, pontificating bully. So up

from the web bubbled a petition, Facebook page, Twitter campaign and hundreds of blog posts and message board memos calling for his ousting. They even went so far as to contact eight of ESPN’s major sponsors asking them to pull their advertising dollars until James was fired. But a gem of Internet reprisal started on the message boards of various college football fan sites. Users started signing off by posing the question, “Did Craig James kill 5 hookers while at SMU?” It was a tiny little rebellion that grew into a full meme. The Google bomb worked so well that, as far as the Internet is concerned, James’ Photos Courtesy: Grand Moff

candidacy for Senate is forever tied to a pretend seedy murder scandal. Leach couldn’t stay away from adding to the already famous lore. Just a few days ago photos of signed copies of Leach’s book surfaced online. One inscription reads “To Nick, CJK5H, Mike Leach.” The other says, “For Pete – Anybody but Craig James of Senator, Mike Leach.” There’s a chance that at first Leach wasn’t aware of the acronym, but by the second book it’s clear Leach is still gunning for him. So far in the race for the GOP nomination shows James at 2%. For now his political dreams may be over, but who knows? Maybe he’ll be back in a few years and there’s no doubt the fans will again rise to occasion to give him grief. This man’s real and fake scandals will live online forever.
Caged Birdy Denver Nuggets wild child Chris “The Birdman” Andersen may have finally stepped in it. He is being investigated by the Internet Crimes Against Children task force. Andersen has yet to be arrested or charged, although property has been seized. The Nuggets have excused him indefinitely. Ironic Yay, you’re famous! Heyward the Wayward… Drunk Oakland Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heward-Bey finally caught something! Too bad it was a felony charge for DUI. The science of healthy golf
Ensuring the longevity of your golf game begins now
G
olf is a skilled but leisurely sport when compared to fast-paced cardiovascular-based sports. This means that many golfers do not prepare the same way they would for sports like soccer, basketball, football, etc... But should they? We often like to emulate professionals in any given sport. Professional golfers do not roll out of bed, grab a quick coffee and cereal bar and make it to the course 5-10 minutes before their tee time and do a few quick stretches before teeing off on hole number one. Why do so many of us expect to be successful in our game and avoid injuries doing this very thing? I think the answer goes back to how we view the game...leisurely. Let’s try a fresh approach to the game of golf and avoid some common mistakes. Pre-game should allow enough time to prepare to play the often-challenging game. A golfer should be both hydrated and well fed. The average round of golf is roughly four hours, which is much longer than many other games. This means your body will need calories and hydration while on the course, so why not start out right? A proper warm-up and stretching is essential for both good play and avoiding injury. Allow enough time to do some dynamic and static stretches of the trunk, hips, lower extremities, shoulders and arms. Five to 10 minutes of stretching can properly prepare the muscles and other soft tissues for the forces that will be required of them. A warm-up should also include practice swings with different clubs. There is much debate about which clubs to warm up with first, but it makes the most sense to begin with shorter clubs that require less force. Progress to your driver, which will, by design, be the first club you use off the tee box. Last, but not least, don’t forget the sunscreen and sunglasses. Four hours is a long time to be in the sun and sunburns that could have been avoided do not make for good golf. The glare on a bright day can strain the eyes, and as your game progresses, this can make your ability to see

and strike the ball squarely and consistently more difficult. Mid-game habits are important as well. There can be significant time between shots so keep stretching while waiting for your next shot to avoid stiffening up between shots. Take time to stay hydrated by drinking that water you packed and eat a snack if you feel your blood sugar is waning. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen midway through your game. To avoid injury play within your normal swing parameters avoiding over-swinging which places you at risk of injury. Post-game stretching is important no matter if you walked or rode in a cart while playing. Take 5-10 minutes before your muscles tighten up to stretch just as you did in your pre-game prep. Sometimes injuries do occur and taking them seriously is very important. If you feel a strain or pain in your back or other area during a shot, take a few minutes to do some area specific stretching and test the area to see if the pain persists. More than likely it was just a transient pain but in the event it does persist...DO NOT FINISH THE ROUND. I wish I had dollar for all the patients that said they felt a pain but continued playing only to injure themselves to greater extent. Do not underestimate your body’s ability to compensate for pain. This can alter your body mechanics causing a much more serious injury with a longer recovery time. If you have a persistent pain with swinging you should rest from the activity (golf), ice the area, use NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories) and begin gently mobilizing the area. If pain persists longer than three to four days, you should see a professional to examine the extent of your injury. When returning to golf following an injury, begin slowly with slower and less aggressive swings to build your strength and form back up. Golf is a fun game but like any sport there are necessary preparations that should be followed to avoid injury and allow you to play at your best.

more than just boots & bling Vince Young & Matt Nordgren team up again to do more than just win games

verything is bigger in Texas…especially the hearts of its heroes. Last Friday I witnessed the nearly endless generosity of the Longhorn community at Boots & Bling – an event that benefitted the Vince Young Foundation and The Leadership Foundation as well. University of Texas Alumni, supporters, and legends were all in attendance to show that the futures of the children that both foundations cater to are not disposable. Not only were the two men of the hour Vince Young and Matt Nordgren there to greet and share memories with guests, but several of their teammates and Longhorn immortal Earl Campbell (who by the way is a gentleman of the highest degree) were also on hand to show a complete unification of the burnt orange and white. To toast with some of the most revered athletes in the state would have been good enough but the night was taken up a notch with a catered BBQ dinner, live music by Jerry Jeff Walker, a silent auction (with an awe-inspiring collection of sports and pop culture memorabilia, as well as, beautiful jewelry), and a one of a kind art performance. The art show was provided by renowned speed-painter Dan Dunn, who painted three amazing pieces including two paintings just for Texas fans. One of Dunn’s paintings went at auction for $15,000 that night – the proceeds go directly to the Vince Young Foundation and their

events, activities, and educational programs to help create leadership opportunities for our next generation. The evening’s guests were a variant of DFW’s sports, entertainment, and fashion scenes all of which were there in solidarity to show respect for the philanthropic work of two of the area’s stars. Whether you turned to your right or your left you were sure to see a prominent lawyer, doctor, or businessman. Even while walking to your table you most likely would have shared a polite nod with a National Championship athlete. But Boots & Bling was about so much more than that. That night, both Matt & Vince
changed my expectations of athletes and their commitments to others with virtually no one else to fight for them. And the Longhorn faithful redefined “family.” They stood together, resolute, for a cause greater than a high society party; more impressive than any highlight film and longer lasting than Waterford Crystal… they stood together for each other. Success and generosity can indeed go hand-in-hand. Hook ’em Horns.

Over the course of a few short years Josh “Hambone” Hamilton’s bat has become for all intents and purposes a state treasure, rewarding the guys in the cheap seats with 117 souvenirs (so far) in just five years as a Ranger. On the other hand we have Tony Romo who has been equally as impressive at times in his career. In 2010 Tony threw for 406 yards in a single game and he is currently #4 All-Time in the NFL for Yards Per Attempt with 8.1. And Tony also has 19 more games with 300+ passing yards than Troy “Three Super Bowls” Aikman. So we have to ask, between Josh and Tony, who is the greater DFW athlete?

Rangers Report
hamilton not the only week’s star By Mark Miller – mmiller@blitzweekly.com
W
hile Josh Hamilton turned in one of the best weeks in major league history, he was not the only reason the Texas Rangers moved back to the best record in the American League. Yes, Hamilton became only the 16th player in history with four home runs in one game May 8 and first in the American League with 18 total bases. Yes, he had nine home runs and 18 runs batted in for the seven games. Yes, he became just the second major league player with 18 home runs in the season’s first 34 games. And yes, there’s talk of him winning the Triple Crown. “Hamilton has stolen the show,” said Texas Manager Ron Washington after Saturday’s game. But let’s give some credit to the many other contributors to the team winning five of seven games: • Elvis Andrus had an 11-game hitting streak ended Saturday, and then went 4-5 in Sunday’s 13-6 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. • Rookie Brandon Snyder had three hits, a home run and six runs batted in to fuel a 14-3 win to begin the week May 7 at Baltimore. • Nelson Cruz had four hits including a grand slam and scored three runs Sunday. • Starting pitcher Neftali Feliz gave up just three runs in 13 innings to win Tuesday against Baltimore and Sunday against the Angels. • Colby Lewis became the first major leaguer to give up five home runs and strike out at least 10 (he had 12) in the same game in a 6-5 loss Wednesday against the Orioles. By scoring in double figures four times and outscoring the Orioles and Angels 61-28, the Rangers raised their record to 23-12. It moved them five games ahead of the Oakland A’s in the American League West division and just a halfgame behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the major leagues. For the week Texas had 92 hits (13.1 average)

including at least nine in six games. Andrus hit .406 (13-for-31 with 10 runs scored) while Hamilton was 14-for-30 (.467). Yes, it was quite a week. Home stand ends with A’s The Rangers conclude their seven-game home stand Wednesday and Thursday with their first 2012 matchup with Oakland. They start interleague action at Houston and then open their first West Coast road trip at Seattle. Oakland entered this week with an 18-17 record after splitting four games at Detroit. Right fielder Josh Reddick leads regular players with a .291 batting average and eight home runs and had four hits, two homers and five runs batted in May 11. Former Tiger Brandon Inge has four homers and 17 RBI in just 11 games since joining Oakland. Left-hander Tommy Milone has been the best pitcher at 5-2, 3.92 earned run average. The A’s will be without rookie center fielder Yoenis Cespedes who went on the disabled list over the weekend with a strained hand muscle. He was leading the team in runs batted in with 21. The Astros were 15-19 after losing their final two at Pittsburgh. Second baseman Jose Altuve leads the team in average at .323. Third baseman Chris Johnson is next at .300 plus is tied for the team lead in homers (4) and RBI (20). On the mound, reliever Wilton Lopez is 3-0, 1.83 ERA while starters Wandy Rodriguez is 3-3, 1.99 and Bud Norris is 3-1, 3.95. Closer Brett Myers has converted nine of 10 save chances. Texas won two of three games against the Mariners in April. Seattle has struggled somewhat since with a 16-20 record. Third baseman Kyle Seager is the top hitter among regulars with a .295 average and 20 RBI. Designated hitter Jesus Montero had a team-leading five home runs. Starters Jason Vargas (4-2, 2.79) and Felix Hernandez (3-2, 2.29) and closer Brandon League (eight saves in 10 tries, 2.12 ERA) have anchored the pitching staff.

After watching the Pros beat it around for two weeks, here are six of the Metroplex’s finest courses Blitz Weekly hackers need to play.
Castle Hills is a semi-private course in Lewisville. The designer is Jay Morrish, and from the championship tees its 6,607 yards, with one longer and two shorter tees. The layout is unusually hilly with good elevation change and water in play on all but four holes. There are tree lined fairways, but somewhat open off the tee, lots of wetlands, streams, and lakes, challenging for all levels of play, and one of the better courses on the north side of Dallas.
Tour 18 Golf Course Located just northeast of DFW airport, this is a replica course of the PGA tours most famous holes, and a great opportunity to play them all in one day. Some of the more famous holes are the first hole at Cherry Hills where Arnold Palmer drove the green to win the US Open, the 17th island green at Sawgrass which is a short par 3 that gives the Pros fits at the Players Championship, and Augusta National’s famous Amen Corner featuring holes 11, 12, and 13 where the Masters is played. Always in great shape and cool to play. The Tribute Golf Club The course plays to 7002 yards, and has 95 bunkers. Also, a neat part of the course is that they identify a particular historical moment relating to each hole on the hole markers.
Cowboys Golf Club The course opened in 2001 and the designer is Jeff Brauer. It plays a stout 7017 yards from the tips. The only NFL team course to our knowledge and the clubhouse is loaded with Cowboys memorabilia. The course is well maintained and expensive, but a treat to play. It’s laid out on slightly rolling terrain, with a number of lakes and streams as major water hazards. Some of the holes feature tree lined fairways; others are more out in the open. The only disappointment is that the cart girls aren’t Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.
Tierra Verde Golf Club is owned by the City of Arlington, but it isn’t your typical muni. It’s a championship caliber course and plays 7000 yards from the Big Boy tees. Texas Star is just outside DFW airport in Euless and one of the better courses in the area, and lower greens fees than some of the more high profile courses in town, but a better course.

Always A Stroke Ahead Ben and Bryon Transcend Local Golf Events
E
very year, the Dallas Fort Worth area hosts back-to-back PGA tour events and is the only metropolitan area to host two PGA events. This year the two events are called the HP Byron Nelson Championship at the TPC Four Seasons Las Colinas May 14-20 and the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial May 21-27. The sponsors of these events come and go, but the attractions for the professional golfers to play these two prestigious events revolve around the two iconic golfers whose statues preside over the two courses. Lord Byron Nelson strikes a relaxed pose near the 1st tee of the TPC course and Ben Hogan, shown frozen at the top of his follow through overlooking the 18th green at Colonial Country Club. Nelson got his name associated with the Dallas event in 1968. The only other PGA event, which is named after a player is the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida. The Colonial tournament is unofficially associated with Hogan, the long-time Fort Worth resident who won the tournament five times, the most by any player. H o g a n considered Colonial to be his home course. Each tournament has a total purse over $6 million and the respective winners take is over $1 million. The Nelson dates back to 1926 with the inception of the first Dallas Open golf tournament. There have been some great champions associated with the Nelson including MacDonald Smith, Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, and Tom Watson, to name just a notable few. The tournament is the leading fundraiser for charity on the PGA Tour and has raised more than $121 million. Nelson, until his death in 2006, commonly made an appearance during the tournament and greeted golfers with his wife Peggy at the 18th green. Weather has always played havoc with

the Nelson and as a result beginning in 1994 the tournament was played at two courses, the Tournament Players Course and the Cottonwood Valley Course, both located at the Four Seasons. Previously only the TPC was used, but since the tournament was played in May during the height of the North Texas storm season, causing several delays and shortened tournaments. Therefore, the decision was made to add the Cottonwood course in order to shorten the amount of time needed to complete the first two rounds. However, in 2008 the tournament reverted to using only the TPC course, when it went through a significant renovation. The Colonial National Invitation was founded in 1946. Hogan won the first two events and helped elevate the prominence to international prominence quickly. The tournament honors the history of golf by using an official Scottish tartan plaid jacket for its champions. Another tradition feeding Colonial history is the beautiful Wall of Champions on the first tee. Engraved with the name and score of each champion dating back to the 1941 U.S. Open, the marble display casts a reverence over the start of any player’s round. In 2003, Annika Sörenstam played in the tournament and became the first woman to play in a PGA Tour event since Babe Zaharias. H owever, Sörenstam missed the cut after rounds of 71 and 74. The Colonial is one of only five tournaments given “invitational” status by the PGA Tour, and consequently it has a reduced field of approximately 125 players (as opposed to most full-field open tournaments with a field of 156 players). That allows the Colonial to have a unique PGA Tour tradition known as the Champion’s Choice invitation. Each year, former Colonial champions select two deserving young players, who otherwise would be ineligible, to compete in the tournament. Dallas Fort Worth golf fans are fortunate to have The Nelson and The Colonial golf events, backed by these two golfing legends, which they can attend each year. Dallas’s darling goes electric

Jack L.Lanee’ Pier - –comments@blitzweekly ByBy Mateeka Mateekalanee.wordpress.com
t was a warm Cinco de Mayo evening and the Granada Theater in Lower Greenville was sold out. Less than two weeks since she dropped her latest LP, Sarah Jaffe’s The Body Wins was generating a buzz and you could feel the anticipation in the crowd. Why was this different than any other performance by one of the city’s favorite artists? It’s because this record is unlike any other she’s released. When Bob Dylan put down the acoustic guitar in favor of an electric, many of his devoted fans were not happy. That appears to be anything but the case with Ms. Jaffe, whose loyal following showed their appreciation for her new direction. Last year there were hints that she was broadening her musical horizons. The
DVD/EP combo The Way Sound Leaves a Room included film of her live performance at Wyly Theatre in February 2010; as well as some demos of new songs she worked on at home (and played all the instruments on). There was also a couple of cover songs she had help with, one of which was a surprise hit “Shut it Down” by Drake. John Congleton, who also produced her first LP, Suburban Nature, had a bigger challenge this time around. Although all songs were written and composed by Jaffe, the orchestral arrangements were written, arranged and conducted by Fiona Brice, who also played first violin on a number of tracks. It’s good to see Jaffe’s core musicians intact. The great Becki Howard played second violin
and the versatile Scott Danbom played piano and synth. Guitarist extraordinaire Robert Gomez lent his talent, as did drummer Jeff Ryan. What must have been most challenging for Congleton was introducing horns into the mix. The first notes on the title track came as a bit of a surprise to me, but by the second verse it all made sense. The complexity of the arrangements would be tough to reproduce live without having full strings and horn sections; so I was not surprised when they weren’t there Saturday night. We can only hope for a performance with a full orchestra someday, perhaps at the Wyly Theatre again (hint, hint)? The first single, “Glorified High” speaks to the reasons one uses to experiment with drugs, including boredom and the need for a story. While the song may make excuses, in the end it doesn’t advocate the behavior. It paints it as a futile undertaking you keep asking yourself why you continue with. My favorite songs on the record are “Halfway Right,” “Mannequin Woman” and “Hooray For Love,” although “Sucker For Your Marketing” has been a favorite of mine for a while. These songs really show Sarah’s chops. Her vocals have always been strong, but they seem to have a new maturity about them – one that undoubtedly comes with experience. That experience surfaced Saturday night when she did an a cappella version of the aforementioned “Shut it Down.” That song is not an easy song to sing and it takes real guts to pull it off by yourself. If you’re on Facebook you can see how Jaffe cares for her fans. The night her new record was released, she mentioned that she’d be DJ’ing at the Doublewide, a cozy little bar in Deep Ellum and that we were all welcome to join her. While she may sport a more modern, avant-garde image now than when we first met her, it’s nice to know she’s still the same nice person who always has time for an autograph or photo. Despite having the opportunity to spin her new record, instead she took requests all night – everything from Drake to New Order to Patsy Kline. It just goes to show that great artists can appreciate many genres. I think we’re all glad that Dylan went electric, as the times were truly changing. I think we can also be glad that Sarah Jaffe has gone electric too, and that times haven’t changed all that much.

Mi Piaci Elegant Italian
By The Bum - www.dallasrestaurantreviews.net Mi Piaci is perhaps the most beautiful Italian restaurant in Dallas -- with food to match. It was named Best Italian Restaurant in Dallas in the Zagat surveys the past four years. ATMOSPHERE An attractive building on Montfort Drive, a block south of Beltline in north Dallas. The huge rear windows look out on a small private lake and fountain. Great place for a business lunch or dinner or firstrate Italian food anytime. The style is smart Italian contemporary – you may think you’re at a trendy place in L.A. The interior is breath taking, with soaring ceilings, enormous spiral columns, and plenty of space between the tables.
Mi Piaci 14854 Montfort Drive Dallas – 75254 PH: 972-934-8424 www.mipiaci-dallas.com Monday - Thursday 11am - 10pm Friday 11am - 11pm Saturday - Sunday 5pm - 10pm
FOOD The menu starts with some of the classic Italian antipastos, including samplings of “Tuscan farmhouse cheeses,” followed by an extensive selection of salads. Then come the half dozen risottos and a dozen incredible pastas. Their pastas are either made in casa in their own kitchen (which you can see), or are pastas importata – imports nearly as good as the house-made. Finally you reach the entrees, which include Salmone Fiorentina (black pepper crusted salmon with caramelized onion mashed potatoes and a pomegranate port reduction), Pesce Branzino (lemon glazed sea bass on basil pesto risotto), Capesante Saltate (pan seared diver scallops on black truffle risotto), Costatine d Agnello (herb seared lamb chops over Gorgonzola polenta with sautéed spinach and a Barolo wine sauce), Osso Buco Alla Milanese, etc. Wow. Like the menu, the prices are above average ... $15-$20 for pastas, $20-$35 for entrees. And worth it!

WINE An extensive all-Italian list, probably over a hundred labels. They’re from all regions of Italy, sorted by Medium Reds, Full Bodied Reds, Noble Reds, etc. If you’re not that familiar with Italian wines, just ask your waiter. The service is unobtrusive but topnotch. They also have a very nice bar overlooking the dining room.
Blitz-Worthy Mi Piaci is a Dallas classic. Whether you go with friends, family, or business guests, the restaurant inevitably gets rave reviews. You won’t be disappointed. What to eat: Tuscan cheese, Calamari Fritti, and Osso Buco Alla Milanese Who eats there: Italian cuisine aficionados, wine enthusiasts, and couples looking for a great date restaurant

P
rescription pill addiction is an epidemic in America right now. People are losing sleep, destroying relationships, making bad decisions, selling their last possessions on Craigslist Tyrone Biggums Crack Party style – I can get some money for these! – among other repercussions. And if you keep going down that road, you’ll always end up in the same place: crying and curled up in the umbilical position on the bathroom floor, hopefully with a few sympathetic friends on speed dial and a good rehab. But love can be just as dangerous. The natural chemical reactions that occur when you’re bonding with a mate can be compared to the strongest opiates mixed up by pharmaceutical companies. This is why many find themselves doing really stupid things when they are swept up in the euphoria of it. And the more you bond, the more neural nets are created in your brain, just like pills or alcohol, or other addictive substances. In the beginning, it’s just a few drinks, maybe a Valium here and there for a long plane ride or when you can’t sleep. And for a relationship, you insist on keeping things casual and nothing serious because you don’t want the

heartache you endured in your last break up. You tell all your friends how great things are and that everything is under control. You remind yourself how much the withdrawals suck and that you’ll be careful never to make the same mistakes again. But then you start missing them more and more, especially since no one else makes you feel that certain way. And whatever your poison may be, you know the distinct effect each one has on you. Pretty soon you’re doing stupid things, like getting them a feral cat that destroys the apartment and flings itself against the door all night – all of which is normal cat
behavior I’ve been told. Or maybe you start craving milkshakes and fast food. In fact, you might get so comfortable with the person that staying in every night eating Steak and Shake seems perfectly normal. And alcoholics and drug addicts are no different with their DUIs and verbal diarrhea, and that’s just warming up. Then the problems start, the lying, miscommunication, confusion, the cheating. Dysfunction is running rampant so I am certain if you’re at least in your 20s I’m preaching to the choir. But who can blame us? The modern world is fueled by an insatiable desire for instant gratification, setting us up to ruin relationships, especially when there are so many choices in life. And with all the choices and beauty in the world, we have to realize that in the end we are just stupid animals constantly searching for a little slice of happiness. But on that road there can be many detours. If you get in too deep you could find yourself putting up with all kinds of ridiculous behavior, making you a slave to the drug – whether it’s pills and alcohol or a bad relationship, or both. So forgive my idealistic indulgence, but I want a new drug. One that doesn’t keep me awake at night, no withdrawals and very little minus for the plus. One that does what it should and never leaves me huddled and crying on the bathroom floor.

John Travolta – Found himself in a “hard” situation this past week when two masseurs filed claims that the Grease actor made unwanted sexual advances on them. Travolta vehemently denies both allegations and says he has proof to refute both claims. Bristol Palin – Laid the smackdown on President Obama backing gay marriage last week. “Little grizzly” Palin said that Glee is a bad influence on America and that the president’s “…press conference might have been about appointing Dora the Explorer as Attorney General because of her success in stopping Swiper the Fox.” Rihanna – Has finally had enough of Chris Brown. The singer could forget about the domestic violence against her of which Brown was convicted and put on probation for, but the sexy singer drew the line last week. Brown released a record where he spoke about her in a derogatory manner…so she unfollowed him on Twitter. Hell hath no fury.
Tell us about your character I play Barnabas Collins, who was cursed by a witch in the late 18th century over a kind of tragic love story, and she locks me in a coffin for 200 years, and I am finally released accidentally. Now this film is an extension of the old television series. How closely, if at all, does it relate to the original? It is Dark Shadows, but it is a very different angle on what the series is. It’s sort of taking what they did on the series and heightening that world a little bit, heightening the reality of things. It’s kind of a fine line between soap opera and reality.
Hooray! It’s another Tim Burton-Johnny Depp cinematic gem for the world to behold – I sure hope this one is as good as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Surely remaking a gothic soap opera from the 1960s into a comedic feature film couldn’t go wrong, could it? It turns out that Dark Shadows the soap opera was a childhood favorite of Depp’s and Tim Burton was more than happy to throw millions of dollars at the Screen Actors Guild to oblige him. The story is built around Barnabas Collins (Depp), who is a regular run-of-the-mill eighteenth century manor lord until a witch played by the gorgeous Eva Green (Casino Royale) falls in love with him, kills his mum and dad, throws
the love of his life from a cliff, turns him into a vampire, and then buries him alive in the forest for about 200 years. Yeah, the poor bloke was having a pretty bad day. And to make things worse he is accidently awoken in 1972 – could you imagine, the friggin’ 70s with bell-bottoms, leotards and Saturday Night Fever. This makes for the classic “fish out of water“ banter throughout the film. But don’t think that this film is all laughs; out of nowhere pulling you out of the depths of hum drum comedy hell Barnabas the vampire slaughters people at a campfire giving you the feeling of “gosh, that was odd.”
You were also a producer on the film. Can you describe a bit of the development process for Dark Shadows? We just sparked a whole series of ideas. You know, the idea of this very elegant man having been cursed to the undead in a box for 200 years to come back to 1972 which may be the worst time aesthetically in human existence. You know, where everything’s absurd. Kids of that era and people of that era accepted macramé owls and resin grapes, and you know lava lamps, pet rocks. So we thought what a great way to incorporate that to have this vampire come back 200 years later in 1972 and basically be the eyes that we never had back then, the eyes that could see the absurdity.
played by Michelle Pfeiffer. How did she come to be part of the project? Tim called me and said he had just spoken to Michelle, and she was a huge fan of the [television] show at the time as well because Tim and I both were on top of that show when we were kids. He asked me, “What do you think? Wouldn’t she be great as Elizabeth?” And I didn’t think there could be a more perfect choice. You and Tim Burton have worked together on so many projects. What is it that he continually brings to all of your projects and this one in particular? Without Tim, we would never have achieved what we did with this film in terms of what we did with tone and quality and humor and just in phantomness. He’s so brilliant you know. Dark Shadows is playing nationwide. The film is rated PG-13 for comic horror violence, sexual content, some drug use, language and smoking.
Barnabas awakens to meet the current family matriarch, Elizabeth Collins,
Thankfully for us all Dark Shadows isn’t like watching Captain Jack Sparrow meets Twilight. Depp is actually able to make this character entertaining at times, while the rest of the cast gives Johnny someone with whom to have a conversation with from time to time. Hats off to Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), who plays Willie Loomis the manor’s habitually drunk caretaker and to the always-impressive Michelle Pfeiffer for her role as the Collins family’s current but snide matriarch. Of course it wouldn’t be a Tim Burton movie without Helena Bonham Carter now would it? She plays the Collins’ live-in shrink (yes
By Danny Woodley @BlitzWeekly this family is so dysfunctional they said screw going down to the office doc, just go ahead and move in), who is completely befuddled by Barnabas’ existence. The movie has some good points in its dialogue and execution, but there are some moments that are as excruciating as a slow motion kick to the junk that you can see coming but you just can’t get away from. It is better than Sleepy Hollow although not as good as Edward Scissorhands, but Depp and Burton meet you in the middle giving you a movie worth shelling out the eight bucks for. Go see it and find us on Twitter and tell us what you thought about it.
MovieReview of Dark Shadows
By Vivian Fullerlove — vfullerlove@blitzweeky.com Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have teamed up again for another fantastical movie making adventure in the new comedy Dark Shadows. Based on the popular horror television series of the 1960’s, Depp plays an imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins, who is set free and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection. Depp sat down and talked about the film and working with his long time friend and collaborator.

o sooner than we took our seats in the movie theater-turned presentation room at the Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas that we knew this was unmistakably a Scion program. Thumping music, flashy images and video – and everything productcentric. Scion is the new, trendy little division of Toyota and we were here to experience the all-new rear drive sport coupe co-developed with Subaru and marketed as the Scion FR-S here in the States. With the exception of its Lexus luxury division, Toyota has been out of the rear wheel-drive car segment in the U.S. for quite some time. Well, they’re back. Drawing on the heritage of rear drive sports cars, the Scion FR-S (known globally as the Toyota FT-86) is the modern interpretation of the

AE86 sports car of a few decades ago, a fact not lost on the fender logos affixed to each new FR-S model. I have to say that Scion veep Jack Hollins nailed it when he opened his presentation by throwing out the first acronym of the day for FR-S as “Friggin’ Really Sweet!” At the heart of the vehicle is a new 200hp 2.0liter direct-injected boxer engine. Thanks to the horizontally opposed engine design the motor can be placed lower in the engine compartment allowing for an overall lower center of gravity and better balance on the road or at the track. Hair on fire or taking it easy the new Scion FR-S is easy and fun to drive with great support and comfort coming from its sport bucket seats up front. The car is listed as a 2+2 sport coupe but we would not suggest making anyone sit in the
rear seat area and although it does have child seat latches I am not sure that even a baby seat would truly fit back there. The Scion FR-S is what it is: A Scion. That means it will appeal to many across the board. While primarily going after the street tuner crowd (especially with the offering of a manual gearbox) I believe the take of the car with the automatic with manual mode and paddle shifters (and Rev Match downshift technology) will be much greater than Scion’s anticipated split of 50/50. Scion demonstrated its new BeSpoke infotainment technology that will arrive when FR-S does. It is app-based and available only on the iOS platform right now. An Android version is in the works and should arrive with the next year model Scion.

Pricing. As Scion enters a new segment with the FR-S it also enters new pricing territory. Base MSRP is around 25 grand and with a few goodies one can now purchase a Scion vehicle for north of $30,000. The first generation is good and can only get better. And while automakers never discuss future plans, one look around the Subaru engine plant will tell you they do make turbocharged engines and one could surmise a performance edition may be somewhere down the road for the shared platform. The first 86 vehicles were sold in ceremonious fashion (again, Scion paying homage to its “86” heritage) but expect the new FR-S to arrive in dealerships nationwide around the 1st of June –just don’t be surprised if you hear “We’re sold out already.”

Bottle Bond An old guy’s car collides with a young guy’s car and both are demolished. The two crawl out of the wreckage, amazed that neither of them were hurt in the accident. The old guy says, “Look at this miracle! This must surely be a sign from God that we should meet and be friends and live our lives in peace for the rest of our days.” “Sure,” says the young guy, convinced the old man’s crazy. “And look at this!” says the old guy, reaching back into his car. “A miracle! My car is demolished, but this bottle of 12-year-old Scotch didn’t break. Surely God wants us to drink and celebrate our good fortune.” Again the young guy agrees, so the old guy opens the bottle and passes it to him. The young guy smiles and takes several huge swigs, then tries to hand it to the old guy, who, to his surprise, refuses. “Aren’t you having any?” asks the young guy. “No, thanks,” replies the old guy. “I’ll wait for the police.”

Younger’s Tartan Special Brewed by: The Caledonian Brewery Company Ltd. ABV: 3.7% It pours a nice dark reddish color with a big thick white head and lots of lacing. The roasted malt and hops come through for a pleasant scent. Definitely a complex brew with many flavors coming through. You’ll pick up on the malt, hops and barley quickly and a bitter after taste immediately. It’s a thick ale with good carbonation. Well balanced and worth a try. Diamond Crown Robusto #4 Wrapper: Maduro Binder: Dominican Republic Filler: Dominican Republic Strength: Medium-Bodied This cigar features a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper that is dark brown, appears oily with a couple of veins. Since the wrapper is thick it might burn uneven at times. A strong wood flavor is present on first draw before coffee and mild spices come through. The second third will be sweeter and creamier. Towards the end the coffee notes will be gone and the spiciness mellows out allowing the earthiness and woody flavors to take over. Great finish and it’s full of flavor!

MARIO WALKER How You Know Him: SMU standout athleteturned-standout teacher. Mario is giving his students the playbook to success. What’s the most rewarding part about being a teacher? The most rewarding part about my job is building relationships with all of the students. Its so great to laugh and joke with the kids while they are learning and recalling information that you have taught them. It is such a huge blessing. What’s the biggest correlation between football and the classroom? The biggest correlation is relaying the information so that they understand what you are saying. On the field you may have to walk through a play, draw it up, or just talk about it so the player understands. The same thing applies in the classroom. You may have to draw it up, read it over, give real life examples, or whatever else it may take for your students to get the point of your lesson. Your proudest moment in cleats was… Playing in the state championship my senior year in high school. We lost, but no one in the world would have thought we would have made it that far after being 1-9 two years before. In an MMA fight who would win: Bill Nye the Science Guy or Dr. House? Without a doubt in my mind, Bill Nye would bring the pain. How can a guy that can barely walk beat one of the coolest scientist to ever roam the earth. One book everyone in the world should read… I’m all about reading my Bible, however, I believe anything that can make someone sit and search their soul and honestly reflect on life is a must read. Surefire way to get detention is… Come in my class whiney, lazy, and disrespectful. I am pretty tolerant but if you are any of those things then there is a good chance I’ll see you after school. Most memorable moment in the classroom… The first time I heard a student walking down the hall using terms and information that I taught them. It had something to deal with map skills, but I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
