MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMICS

Our goal is for boys to be fully engaged in their learning so that they can reach their full potential. We know how boys learn best. Our teachers are experts in all-boys education, and our hands-on experiential approach has boys up and moving, collaborating with their classmates and exploring real-world problems and finding solutions.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMICS

OUR PERSONALIZED APPROACH to learning allows us to meet the needs of every boy, from our strongest learners who need extra challenges to boys who need more support.

SIXTH GRADERS dissect chicken

feet. They examine how the ligaments, bones and tendons work together to make the toes move.

IN SIXTH GRADE, students learn about

the Chesapeake Bay through a virtual field trip with Towson University’s Center for STEM Excellence. They also visit the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center, where they discover natural habitats and identify fish, crabs and mollusks.

IN EIGHTH GRADE SCIENCE,

students participate in project-based learning. For instance, they build boats using foam core and conduct tests to determine which boat can hold the greatest mass, gaining insights into physics, engineering and the principles of buoyancy.

IN EIGHTH GRADE, academic expectations and challenges increase significantly as boys prepare for the transition to the upper school.

HISTORY CLASSES

debate policy issues. Boys learn to substantiate claims, cite credible sources and identify bias.

IN SEVENTH GRADE HISTORY, boys

draft maps of ancient Egypt. This handson project allows them to deepen their understanding of the region’s geography and uncover its rich historical significance.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FACULT Y

RELATIONSHIPS are the heart of a Boys’ Latin education. Faculty get to know their students really well, which gives boys the confidence to reach their full potential. Don’t take our word for it. Hear from our teachers:

WHEN BOYS BEGIN MY CLASS, their first

assignment of the year is a personal digital media project that allows them to share their passions and interests with the class. This offers a great opportunity for me to get to know each boy and provides them with a chance to display their creativity. Once a boy feels seen and respected for his interests and ideas, he becomes a more engaged learner.” — Grady Gamble ’07, middle school technology

I LIKE TO DISCOVER A STUDENT ’S INTERESTS AND WHERE HIS CONFIDENCE LIES. Once we have

built a rapport around a shared interest, or he has been able to teach me something about his hobby or sport, then we can use this common ground to address challenges and explore opportunities. — Susan Brown, middle school science

EVERY STUDENT HAS A DIFFERENT STORY.

In order for each of my kids to feel truly known and challenged, it is my job to know who they are inside and outside of School. Every boy needs different things to be motivated, and to feel seen. — Henry Melcher, middle school history BOYS’ L ATIN MIDDLE SCHOOL

Our motto, Esse Quam Videri, to be rather than to seem, inspires each boy to become the very best version of himself. Our mission, coupled with our core values of courage, integrity and compassion, creates an environment where boys take responsibility for their actions and hold each other accountable. They learn to look beyond themselves and do what is difficult—and what’s right.

ROBOTICS: Every year, our

middle school robotics teams participate in a FIRST LEGO League tournament where local teams compete in a robotics challenge. Boys’ Latin teams often advance to regional and statewide competitions.

OUR INNOVATION PROGRAM

is one of our signature offerings. Boys get to tinker, compute, create and stretch their imagination by participating in a wide range of activities, from building rockets to playing chess to cooking dishes from across the globe. The list goes on and on.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS

are the perfect place to engage in healthy competition and learn the values of teamwork and respect. Beginning in the sixth grade, boys can compete against local schools in 12 different sports on 25 different teams.

WE PROVIDE numerous

opportunities for boys in grades 6–8 to stay active, such as competing in interscholastic athletics, engaging in physical education and participating in non-competitive sports.

IN ART CLASSES, boys get

their hands dirty and fire up their imaginations by painting, drawing, printmaking, collage-making, graphic design and other art techniques. They also take three years of ceramics. By the third year, they are creating difficult pieces and developing a sense of pride in their work.

and learn to read music. Sixth grade focuses on voice, seventh on piano and eighth graders get to try their hands on hand chimes. We also have a highly talented middle school band.

EVERY YEAR middle school boys

have the opportunity to perform in a full-scale theater production. Recently, boys showcased their acting, singing and dancing talents in productions of Aladdin and The Lion King.

MIDDLE SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

WHERE

LEADERSHIP is

TAUGHT

We believe that it is important for middle school boys to not only learn important leadership skills, but to practice those skills. Focusing on leadership skills helps build boys’ self-confidence, encourages them to act with compassion and prepares them for leadership roles in high school, college and beyond.

MIDDLE SCHOOL LEADERSHIP

NO ONE UNDERSTANDS BOYS’ LATIN’S MIDDLE SCHOOL BETTER THAN OUR BOYS.

That’s why middle schoolers serve as admissions ambassadors, participating in student panels, giving tours to families and hosting prospective students.

OUR FORMAL PUBLIC SPEAKING PROGRAM gives boys opportunities to become comfortable speaking in front of groups and expressing their thoughts and ideas.

EIGHTH- GRADE SPEECHES are a

significant milestone in a boy’s middle school journey. They courageously deliver their speeches in front of the entire middle school student body, Headmaster Chris Post and faculty on a topic that is important to them.

SIXTH AND SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS

speak about current events and cultural themes.

“I WANT MY CLASSROOM TO BE A PLACE TO TAKE RISKS. A place to try out half-formed ideas and turn them into solid opinions; a place to answer who am I and why? None of that happens without me knowing my students and them knowing me.” — Ryan Hopkins, middle school dean of students and history teacher
