Others say it is a lifestyle and all about pulling new tricks and style in the park and backcountry. Whatever the definition, you will certainly not find a freeskier making gentle turns or a few extreme carves on the piste. There is much more to it, more freedom, more creativity, and using the entire mountain to maximise fun in the snow. So go hit the park or the backcountry, however you do it simply enjoy and style it up! Eventually the ski industry has caught up with the young and innovative kids and now has a huge palette of products to choose from for this style of skiing. For those of your who want to ride switch and stomp big tricks you need some Twintip Skis. In powder every millmetre of ski width counts. Float in powder gives more speed and increases safety. That old style of bouncing around in powder on carving skis is long gone! Here is the alphabet of freeskiing: Soft skis and those with less torsional stiffness are forgiving to ride and are more suitable for beginners. Stiffer skis on the other hand should be left for the more experienced riders out there seeking a reactive ski. The length of ski is determined by your height and weight, as well as the preferred style of skiing. An optimum ski for freestyle riding should be no longer than the skier is tall. Many skiers choose a skier that is as much as 10cm shorter than their height. For freeriding the ski length should match the riders height, or be a bit longer. If you are intending to use the skis mainly in powder then the ski should be up to 10cm longer than you are tall. One you have chosen the right length of ski for you, the next decision is â&#x20AC;&#x17E;Twin Tip or not Twin Tipâ&#x20AC;&#x153;...Most freeskis are designed for bidirectional riding, but true Twintips have equal length nose and tail. The binding area is

exactly in the middle of the ski. On a non true Twin Tip the binding area is set back a little in the direction of the tail. So far so good, the important decisions have been covered. Now you have to make sure you choose a suitable binding for your skis and that it is mounted correctly. The ski poles should approximately come up to your belly button. Skis, bindings and sticks, all that is left now are ski boots.. All the boots you will find in this catalogue are designed for freestyle skiing. When buying a new boot it is important to get the correct fit. Regardless whether you prefer a stiffer or softer boot, you should be able ride for a without any pain. For beginners we recommend slightly stiffer boots, as you will find the change from typical Alpine ski boots not to drastic.

SNOWWEAR MEN As the name Freeskiing indicates, you will be out and about in the snow, so the correct clothing is required. Cold, wet, wind and sport combined create a need for functional clothing. The body has to be kept warm and dry while still letting the sweat escape. The best method is to follow the â&#x20AC;&#x17E;layering systemâ&#x20AC;&#x153;. The underwearlayer should be made from moisture wicking material so that the sweat is transported as quickly as possible away from the skin to avoid it freezing and you getting cold. Wet + cold = bloody cold! Over this you should wear a fleece layer which will keep your body warm and also helps transport the moisture away from the body. The most important and final layer is a functional piece of outerwear which is windproof, prevents water from the outside reaching the body yet also helps transport the moisture from the inside (sweat) away from your body. There are nowadays many materials that can do this. It is achieved through membranes, which have the perfect qualities needed on the mountain. The higher the standard of membrane, the higher the waterproofing (mm) and breathability (g/mm/24h) will be. Skiing is at the end of the day an active sport and you need to be mobile. Freeski WOMEN It is not just the guys who are getting into freeskiing, plenty of girls are realising the freedom and room for creativity that it allows on the mountain. Many have now made it into a lifestyle and can be seen rocking the park and backcountry allover the Alps. A small girls scene is slowly building up in Europe and it is getting stronger every season. The parks provide the playground for the motivated and those looking to master new tricks. This is supported by the many brands which now produce girl specific lines of snowwear and freeskis. The most have been specially codesigned with the teamriders. The result is girls products for girls. The days of girls wearing small guys products are long gone... check it out! The shape and the flex of the Freeskis are designed to fit the lesser weight and height of female riders. Regardless whether freestyle or freeride or big mountain, there is suitable model for girls. Also with regards to ski widths, the skis are a touch smaller to take into account narrower female feet. But dont forget if you are going to ride mainly powder you can still go for a wider ski for float. BOOTS Girls ski boots are of course designed with narrower feet in mind, and made to fit the female foot and leg. The lower calf muscle means they need a softer cuff for comfort. Narrow heels mean extra padding in the heel area. BINDINGS The bindings are also built to take into account less rider weight and girls needs.

SNOWWEAR The girls snowwear market has also seen some great steps being taken by all brands this season. Now you will find a huge selection for any style and taste. As well as looking the part, now you can be confident in the knowledge that you can get your hands on some female specific snowwear that can hold its own for long days in the park and powder. There are nowadays many materials that can do this. It is achieved through membranes, which have the perfect qualities needed on the mountain. Munich, 3.April 08 6AM in the morning, it was time to leave. My flight, Munich-Amsterdam-San Francisco took off on time. I spent the next 16 hours in the plane with just a short stopover in Amsterdam Airport. Beacause I booked last minute I had to deal with

dudes eventually wandered out of the arrival gate I was pretty relieved. Before now I only knew Tobi from the crew, and all I knew about the trip was that I was the photographer...the journey could start!

For the first night we decided to stay in a cheap motel. Eventually a normal bed to sleep in, apart from Flo who was too tired to get out of the car and spent the night in the carpark.

And for those of you who know the guys personally, you will know they sure shook the place up! Here are some exclusive and uncensored clippings from the travel diary of photographer Daniel Ausweger...

The rest of the crew were already on their way, and during their 11 hour flight were happily taken care of by the Lufthansa Crew with their full selection of liquid services. I landed at 13:00 San Francisco local time, and all I had to do was wait for 7 hours before the rest arrived, landing at around 20:00. As the Pickings Fam

I heard we would be getting two „small“ Chevy Blazers, but as Gentile rolled up in a Chevy Suburban we all soon forgot the jetlag and were super stoked! the car and spent the night in the carpark. The next morning, after a big breakfast we headed to downtown San Francisco. We decided to check out the city centre on foot. The Apple Store made a fortune out of us, Starbuck‘s and Macy‘s were more than happy to take our dollars. Unfortunately we did not have much time to check out much more of San Francisco or enjoy it‘s infamous nightlife, because come midday we set off towards Lake Tahoe on Lake Tahoe with a short stop on the Golden Gate Bridge. After a 4 hour drive and a few breaks with our powerful cars, we reached our Cozy Cabin on Kingsway Beach. No idea why the street was named like this, because we were located deep in a forest, no beach to be seen. The house itself was a killer, super comfortable and fitted with all the extras you could ever need. Simply check out the video

After Northstar and Alpine Meadows we decided to first check out Squaw Valley and bought ourselves a Spring Season Ticket. We then hit the hill to go shredding. The park in Squaw offers a big setup. From beginner and medium kickerlines to 2 large railparks, halfpipe, and a line with 3 huge kickers. Due to the strong winds we were restricted to riding the easy kickerline and railparks for two days. It soon became clear that the Doc not only has a good hand when diagnosing injuries (which we noticed several times on the trip) but also rips with a snowboard under his feet, with such tricks as a 270on-off or bs-lipslides on boxes.

Tobi wanted to impress the chicks with this cleanly landed Mute, unfortunately they were looking the other way...Squaw Valley. 4. Tobi and Shizzl on the lift - safety first. 5. „Ghetto“ - Tobi still cannot believe he is in Squaw valley and has to let out some energy with a Fastplant on a barrel.

As soon as the third day we already had the cops breathing down our necks. As the neighbours complained about our (mainly Gentile‘s) car driving style. They asked us if we possessed any firearms, because someone had reported gunshots. The cop who did not seem to understand fun (I had no idea that a belt had so much space for so many weapons) called us „knuckleheads“ and threatened us with jail. Our crew remained cool and we got off with a warning. On day 5 we treated ourselves to a day off due to the bad weather and set off to make some funny lifestyle photos at Lake Tahoe. Reini and myself also used the day to edit the footage we had so far of the guys. Josh spent his free time in the local phone box, not sure who he was calling all the time...

Day 6 was the first cool day with â&#x20AC;&#x17E;less windâ&#x20AC;&#x153;. A full kicker session was on the cards. Perfect conditions, warm, the sun was shining in the bluebird sky (like every day) and the snow was nice and slushy. The park shaper added some salt with his saltsprayer to the kicker landings and take off so the snow remained perfect. Myself and Reini got some great footage nd shots of the guys, who were super motivated thanks to the sick park. Tobi, Flo and Josh sticked just about every trick clean and were pushing each other to the limit. It was a fine session and made heaps of fun just to watch even though one would have happily swapped places with the guys.

Day 9 kicked off with a tragic and shocking incident, Gentile broke his collarbone. Genitle was however in the capable hands of Dr.Shizzle, who was always there throughout the trip to happily diagnose our pains and woes. Our doc brought Gentile into the nearest hospital where he was checked out. He had to pay up front with his credit card for the 600 $ xrays, good job he had insurance. Gentile who is not the type of guy to get depressed over a broken collarbone, simply spent the next few days jibbing with his arm in a sling.

Over the next few days we had to search for alternatives due to strong winds, as this made the kicker to dangerous to ride. The railpark was jibbed, a small drop was made over a stone wall and chilling was the name of the game. At some point, another Schladming local (Mark Mitter) crossed our path. We never really got around to tasting the American

made shopping more difficult! Should we take that, or that or maybe both? Such questions plagued the entire shopping trip. In the evening every one of us was busy with the unpacking of the fruits of our shopping bonanza, and im sure each one of us started to worry just a little about how much they had just burned on the credit card.

We had a fright when Tobi, a little over motivated, tried to clear the corner. Way too fast, he overshot the landing with his 360 and before we had time to think it would end badly, he managed to pull the landing out of the bag.

Only Josh and Mark made it out one night to the casinos on the border of Nevada and took part in a poker contest. The two poker fans did not mess about, and came home with the pot. It was not a big prize money but was enough for a crate of beer for the crew. We had one day shopping in the casino city of Reno, something we had to make the most of with the current exchange rate. Even Squaw Valley doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2DC;t have an endless list of obstacles and we were on the lookout for a new challenge, so we headed on the 14th day to Northstar. We were all left in awe at the size of the huge park setup there, in fact it was so big that it was hard to get an overview of it all. The first thing we saw as we stepped out of the gondola was the biggest, most perfectly shaped superpipe, to keep it brief a dream! Unfortunately it was too icy and a bit too sketchy for us. The next long chairlift took us to the peak of the freestyle heaven. There were an unbelievable 4 different routes to

We concentrated mainly on the Car Wallride, on the huge Staircase and the corner. We had a fright when Tobi, a little over motivated, tried to clear the corner. On the next try he tried it with a 540 but was a little too short unfortunately, but he still sticked it. So it seems as though Tobi can stick anything! Afterwards he needed a well earned break.

On day 15 we visited Squaw Valley again. As we decided that we had shot the kickers to death already, Tobi grabbed the camera and decided to do some follow cam work with Mark. On day 16 (see pic 5) we headed to Northstar where we once again had a super session. This time it was only Flo, Josh, Shizzl and myself. Reini and the others prepared a fat BBQ at home. Flo, Josh and Shizzl attacked the Car Wallride again and the Staircase. For the last too runs, i put my camera down and dropped into the massive superpipe with Flo, it was much softer now and real fun to ride.

After a long day on the mountain we looked forward to a nice dinner. In the evening it was our Say Good Bye Party back at the crib, as half of the crew had to head back the next day to Europe. Gentile, Dr.Krister, Flo and myself had to pack our stuff as we had some important stuff to do back home. Reini our filmer, who is also a great cook, fired up the grill. So nothing stood in the way of a hot barbecue session and we cleaned up 4kg of meat with no trouble. Good tunes, strong drinks and 2 friends from Sacremento helped the party roll into the early hours. Mark Mitter was also present and had fun too... The next morning, at around 6 Am after 2 hours sleep we had to get up and head to the airport for our midday flight. As none of us wanted to drive we had to play a game of stone, scissor, paper to see who would take

the wheel. Naturally I lost, but we made it to the airport safely. The plus side of our early departure was that we did not have to clean up the cabin, what a mess! At the airport I split from the crew again as their flight was in the evening. They headed to downtown San Francisco once again to check out the Apple Store...again. After a sleepless night, I had another one in the plane with little space and a snorer next to me. At least the in flight entertaiment was good. However really annoying was that I missed the connecting flight from Amsterdam.

As I was no longer with the crew I cannot tell on first hand what they got up to after I left. The rest of the crew had it just as tough

It was an appartment with an open fire and large iving room. According to Reini the appartment had so many bedrooms that each one of them could have slept in a different room each night for the length of their stay

as us who left early. After their breakfast kindly made by the girls, they had to clean up the bomb site of a cabin. Tobi and Reini drove to Squaw Valley and prepared for the long journey to Oregon. The rest of the crew also had to pack their bags and make their way to Mt. Hood. Day 18: With 20cm fresh snow and a 4am start, Josh, Tobi and Reini set off on their 1000km journey. After 12 hours driving, many stops at Subway and other fast food joints they reached their destination of Goverment Camp in Mt.Hood. They checked into their new home, the Edelweiss. It was an appartment with an open fire and large

living room. According to Reini the appartment had so many bedrooms that each one of them could have slept in a different room each night for the length of their stay. But the first dissappointment was around the corner. The weather forecast for the next few days was disappointment, with snow, rain and fog. Only one day during the last week at Mt.Hood was rideable. Josh decided to head off and visit Sacramanto and Arnie, or someone else on the way.

End of April and it was time for Reini, Tobi and Josh to head home from Portland back to Europe.

Day 23: Tobi and Reini made use of the good weather and got some shots in the skibowl Mt. Hood.

Ordering from Switzerland is easy! Our Swiss customers can order without having to pay our VAT (minus 16% from the net price). However you will have to pay back Swiss VAT (7.6% of the net value) when the product is imported. This still means you save a minimum of 8.4% on the original Austrian price.
