From the CEO.... It’s that time again where we celebrate through the most popular fundraiser, Lottery for the Arts on April 10 at 6pm. We have 100 artists who have generously donated work valued at $250 or more again, who are the support and backbone of the event. We couldn’t do it without out you! The Crocker Art Museum’s Contemporary Art Curator, Diana Daniels was gracious to jury the work, and has selected wonderful pieces as her top 10. I hope you can join us.

Workshops with Tip Toland presented by the Susan Cooley-Gilliom Artist in Residency Teaching Program facilitated through the Placer Community Foundation are just around the corner. Don’t miss this opportunity to work with a world famous international clay artist this month. Sign ups are available here. America’s ClayFest II opens this month and there are 75 amazing pieces of art from all over the country. Also, the Ridley Gallery at Sierra College will be featuring the work of the student competition-there’s amazing talent in both shows. If want your child to learn about the arts over their spring break, don’t forget to take a look at the Spring Break Camp, and, of course, there’s always the Super Sunday Art Academy running every weekend. There’s so many choices for children to get involved and explore with their critical thinking skills. Please join us this month for another wonderful month of programming just for you! Sincerely,

THE NEXT GENERATION OF ARTISTS The Annual High School Art competition called “The Next Generation” was and is a wonderful show, well worth a closer look; it is fresh, expressive and of high quality, both in artistry and technique. Curiously, though many more female artists this year! A subject to perhaps discuss in the future. The winners deserve “the kudos” but the rest of the show was packed with symbolism, self-expression, with some deep and at times dark meanderings of mind and soul: this as it should be since the young adults in the show were not afraid to explore personal feelings about their future in becoming adults, grasping

and grappling with ideas, ideals and perceptions with some unease, but always with a strong and artistic intention! While the winners had their names mentioned, I want to mention some of the other future artists of the show. Morgan Hall Broken and Kevin Chapelle with Building Cradled in the Uncertainties of the Night are worth a mention, both for being curious and bizarre. I particularly liked Robin Bagga’s Masking The Inevitability of the Future , and Eva Habson’s Misperception which I thought was a brave and brilliant moment of selfexpression!

2014 Winners Best in Show - Anjelica Ramos

3rd Place - Ariana Paval

1st Place - Hannah Kang

Honorable Mention - Morgan Paris

2nd Place - Deanna Nardi

Honorable Mention - Erin Hopkins

Carroline Semens with Urban Faces was raw and powerful as was the skill of Dayton Allegra with The Reef with its reference to the lion fish. The piece by Morgan Paris called Side Effects was particularly poignant, deep in feeling and brave to tackle such issues. There were many great works in this show great artists too numerous to mention, full of fresh ideas and selfconfidence!

Line Arts wisely and come to see the gallery as a source of information and help for their future careers. It is my wish that this next generation continues to be self-expressive and not be limited or crushed by accepted conventions and conformity of the art scene. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK, WE SALUTE YOU! -Zoran Peshich.

I hope that the participants of this show will use their years membership to the Blue

CURATOR’S CORNER Comments from a curator on resume’s: Besides making great art and photographing it well, artists need a resume. This is a collection of your experiences as an artist. It lists the education, exhibitions, bibliography etc. A good way to start filling up your resume is by taking classes and workshops. Another is to enter as many competitions as possible. A great resource is the California Arts Council website and ours where a juried exhibit is going every six week that as a member you can apply for free.

Lots of good information and exactly what my husband needed - especially since Lew had the same camera and was able to help John with his camera as well as give an overview of how to photograph my art. As Eich Intermediate School teacher Amy Murray states it, “arts are just so important to a we’ll rounded education.” Murray teaches the Fundamentals of Art course which ‘is an interdisciplinary class that bridges visual arts, art history and language arts.’ “It’s a very academic class, I think one of the big misconceptions is that it’s a lower level academic but it involves a lot,” says Murray There is a ton of vocabulary, higher level thinking, higher depth of knowledge. I think sometimes it’s a surprise to kids who come in and think it’s going to be fingerpainting.” Academic, but still enjoyable! “It is really fun! It’s an introductory class so we try to do all the elements of art,” says Murray. “We’ve just developed an IB 36 • Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org

(International Baccalaureate) program because Eich is an IB candidate school.” In the International Baccalaureate program, visual and performing arts are not considered an elective instead taking the role of one of eight essential core courses. The IB program is intended to create well rounded students who are inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principles, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective, as outlined in the IB learner profile. “We talk about the IB leaner traits in the context of art,” says Murray. “The beauty of the arts is there is more than one answer. You have a problem or situation or message or idea and there can be multiple ways to communicate that.” -Continued page 38

Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org • 37

The students put their problem solving skills to test recently when learning about the prehistoric Lascaux caves in France. “It was great, the kids went into the computer lab and did research, looked up pictures and did a 3-D virtual tour of the cave, but the website is in French.” describes Murray. Since all the kids take Spanish as their foreign language, they were able to figure out the meanings and navigate the website. “It was very cool, it integrated technology, the foreign language, the art and the history. While involving all these skills, students at Eich are still able to satisfy the basic human urge it communicate, create and leave a mark just like the prehistoric inhabitants of the Lascaux caves. A favorite of the students is their recreation of Starry Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh.

38 • Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org

“I think the students like it a lot, because at first they see it and they’re a little intimidated,” says Murray. “But we break it down and we talk about all the different types of lines. We identify all the diagonal lines and vertical lines and converging lines... If the kids can draw all the lines separately, which they all can do, they can put it together into a drawing.” Murray explains “It’s really cool because when the kids get to high school, even as high school freshmen they will already have a background of the fundamentals of art, which oftentimes even the kids in high school don’t get a chance to learn about.” - Laurel Teague
