The Ellene Ashcraft Membership Medley will feature over 150 works from our innovative artists. It’s the largest membership show in the history of Blue Line Arts, thanks to our members! As a dedicated member who also served at Roseville Arts, Ellene Ashcraft is remembered in this year’s exhibit. Ellene was a prolific oil and watercolor artist who, professionally, was an architectural draftsman as well. Along with our celebration of artists and awards, Ellene’s surviving husband, Norm will share their story at the reception. I can hardly wait to see everyone and their work in person. With gratitude to those who help us with their volunteerism, I’d like to introduce you to our newest interns:

MID-CENTURY MADNESS (INSANITY) Mid-century modern is an architectural, interior, product and general design that describes mid-20thcentury developments in modern design, urban development from roughly 1933-1965. Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic architecture in combination with arts and crafts was an American connection to the aesthetics of midcentury modern however; it was more of a reflection of the international and Bauhaus movements. Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier and Miles Van Der Rohe were significant contributors to the movement. Some of the best examples 16 • Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org

in American came via a pioneer builder and developer Joseph Eichler who brought mid-century architecture to LA and the San Francisco Bay region. Palm Springs is noted for many examples of this ‘modern design’. I’m old enough to remember the harsh reality of life from a European and UK perspective, namely the ‘nuclear terror’ and not so much art and design. This exhibition is an interesting and I might add a ‘brave’ attempt to show off the artistic symbolism and products of midcentury art and design. While it was a genuine art design movement, there was a lack of the periods’ enduring political

and ideological struggles! Perhaps that’s why it was such a diversion from this harsh reality. A form of escapism that today we can idolize the time period with new interpretations of mid-century art. The show itself is visually very impressive, from the lamps, Metropolitan car, clock, marshmallow sofa, to the crazy triangular polygon sculptures in the window!

There was Jason W. Howell’s ‘Eye: Helvetica’, classic mid-century design and Mark Webster’s ‘untitled portrait’, harking

I was very taken by Jim Coston with his three classic abstract paintings (my favorite) because he renders a perfect reproduction of the style. I believe that the artists in this exhibition did a great job and delivered their work with great understanding of this classic art movement. It really is well worth a visit and quite a trip down Nostalgia Street

-Zoran Peshich Artist

DETAIL: ‘Guitar’ Jim Coston

As for the art, Randy Brennan’s take on the period, makes for great decorative vibrancy and is the only artist who tries to add the nuclear terror element to his work in a whimsical visual narrative.

back to the Bauhaus period.

CURATOR’S CORNER Wow! This year we received 150 entries for our Ellene Ashcraft Membership Medley show! This is a third more than we have had in the past. When we were looking over the entered pieces, we were struck with not only the quantity but the quality. Not only did we have the leap in participation, but this year we are honoring Ellene Ashcraft. She was a tremendous artist and past board member. Also, we asked Diana Daniels, Curator of Contemporary art at the Crocker Art Museum to choose her favorite pieces, which will be announced at the closing reception. Thank you for submitting your pieces and I am looking forward to putting together the best membership exhibit ever.

A TEACHER THAT’S DOING IT RIGHT

Art teacher extraordinaire Jeff Blanchard has just finished his fourteenth year at Robert C. Cooley Middle School. He accomplishes the inconceivable - getting past and current students to come in during summer vacation to support the classroom! Art tables are stripped and repainted each summer for the coming year, with stunning images of everything from animals to Doctor Who. A teacher who is able to gain backing from 11 to 14

year olds is doing something right! Blanchard’s students create an exhibit each year in the gallery that is a credit to the school and the community. Not to mention doing it all on a shoestring budget. “Each year I have a returning student who looks down at their work from the beginning of the previous year and realizes just how much better they have gotten. It is such a treat to see the increase in talent and maturity in my students, but it is priceless watching them realize it themselves.”

-Jeff Blanchard
