REVIEW

I’m going to level with you: I didn’t know a thing about Fiber Art going into Layered & Stitched. I was intimidated, at first, but I cobbledtogetherenoughofmyknowledgeof composition, of color and my familiarity with corollary forms like drawing and painting and I thought I did a pretty good job of assessing, and judging, and squinting to see all I could see, then I dropped the act entirely and just started looking. You have to engage with art first by seeing. “The medium is the message” is true enough, when you’ve observed enough to start looking for messages. But start by looking. Look at She’s on Fire by Carolyn Hanley. The obverse has an abstract and dazzling figure in quasi-iridescent red surrounded by other similarly sumptuous forms. The reverse shows flowers against black and white pattern forms. Maybe you think about traditional associations between femininity and flowers, and fabric for that matter. Maybe you peer further into history when tapestries were symbols of opulence and power, then you think of fire imagery as something equally powerful, dangerous even, in its undomesticated state. Let the openended thoughts mingle a bit, but we’re still just looking.

Look at The Language of Color by The Pixeladies. Take the time to read, read every word if you can. Color invigorates how we communicate, lending easy metaphors and immediate recognition to headlines, ad copy, and branding but so much of it blends into the background, invisible. The Pixeladies have found these words, arranged and collided them, then transferred them to fabric; the least you can do is look. Look at Female A by Paula Chung. What’s the first thing you feel? It’s alright to be repulsed, at first, but understand that the revulsion comes, not from the unfamiliar, but from recognition of the deep humanity of the image. Humanity that is at once exposed and made foreign. We live our lives inside these fragile bodies. Make peace with it, and see what you can see. It is as friendly as it is violent.

Art Deco Reimagined is a complete show.

Congratulations are in order for the curator, Tony Natsoulas, and The Sacramento Art Deco Society (a special shout out, as the kids used to say, to Bruce Woodward and Earl Towner of The Society). Even before entering the gallery, the Tower theater spire looms overhead, hinting at the continuing impact of Art Deco styling on the greater Sacramento metropolitan area. Once inside, there’s a complete recreation of an Art Deco living space: furniture, appliances, housewares. But, this is not an exhibition of the past so much as a preparation for the new work farther inside. The myriad vintage and collectable items on display in cases and freestanding help to create an atmosphere that mirrors the thoughts of the featured artists. They were asked to be inspired by Art Deco in the creation of contemporary pieces.

Mark Webster took First Place with his Anamorphosis from Outside In. This piece features bold figuration that suggests an underlying method of construction with links to Cubism, no doubt via an affinity with Futurism. Second Place went to the unassuming Crest Curlicues by Tom Spaulding.

and lights from a local landmark serves well to remind us of the playfulness and gaiety inherent in the styles that sometimes gets lost when one thinks of the rectilinearity and machine hardness of other elements of Art Deco. Art Curtis’ Olive Arms is an interesting choice for Third.

I would have picked his equally finely crafted but more whimsical Mattons Big Gulp. Art Deco Reimagined is an exciting show with the feeling of a full-on event.

Go see it (again) before it closes on July 13th.

Mikko Lautamo is an artist living and working in the greater Sacramento area. He studied writing and art at Sac State, where he received his Masters in Studio Art in 2011. His work explores the intersection between individual choice and the hierarchical groups and systems that surround us. He primarily works in code, creating software-based generative animations that enact the underlying metaphors of our social systems and natural surroundings. He doesn’t like things that are predictable or have a definitive ending. That’s not how life is.

2013 VISITING ARTIST LAUREN ROSS PAUL

At BLA from Oct 15th - Nov 5th 2013 Laura Ross-Paul is a dedicated artist, teacher, and arts cheerleader. She has been painting professionally for almost four decades, exhibiting her work around the Northwest, throughout the country, and even internationally, in various galleries, museums and art centers. She’s been written about in reviews, catalogs and art books. She’s served on the numerous boards and committees for local and regional art as well as fostering the artistic talents of art students through her teaching positions at Portland State University, Pacific Northwest College of Art, Lewis and Clark College, and the Oregon College of Art and Craft, among others.

Laura has a long-term marriage with her husband, writer and developer, Alex Paul and three wonderful, creative children, Sean, Louie and Emma.

Blue Line Arts is a non-profit 501c3 organization supporting arts in South Placer County.

Local fiber artist, Danuta Dias, creates exquisite fused fabric pieces, including scarves, brooches and necklaces using wool, silk, cotton, gauze, as well as other fabrics. While wearable, her pieces are true works of art, displaying Dias’ mastery of the fused fabric process.

solace and joy in the ability to “paint” with the fibers, continuously mixing colors to create wearable “painted” clothing. Over the years, she has been able to fine tune her use of color and says she finds inspiration for her muted, Earth-toned palette from the world around her. Whether she’s scrolling through Pinterest, flipping through Dias says she first got involved in the a magazine, or observing nature, she art of fused fabrics over five years ago, can find a way to incorporate what as a form of stress release. She found she sees into her art.

The fused fabric technique is unique as it is intricate and yields beautiful, delicate results. Dias’ “wet felting” process involves designing the composition of her piece using different colors, themes, and textures, wetting everything, then creating temperature changes so as to get the fibers to weave together and bond.

The process results in organic, one-of-a-kind works of art that can be worn as well as displayed. While she has primarily been creating scarves using the fused fabric technique, Dias is looking to expand into home décor, beginning with pillows,

wall hangings and lamp shades (I’ve had the opportunity to see her prototype and it was stunning). This seems to be a natural progression and one that Dias is excited to take.

A piece of advice for novice fused fabric artists? Be patient. Dias urges beginners to just have fun with the process and enjoy the opportunity to meet “like-minded” friends who enjoy creating fused fabric pieces. * -Katie Curler

Instructor: Kate Tresidder Kate graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from CSULB and is currently working on getting her teaching credential. She previously taught a jewelry making workshop at Blue Line Arts, where students created beautiful and inspired jewelry.

Instructor: Wilhelm Chung Wilhelm is currently studying mathematics at CSUS and has taught numerous workshops at Blue Line Arts. Most recently, he lead “Amazing Anime,” where students learned how to build onto previously conceptualized Anime characters.

SUMMER CAMPS All Kinds of Art: Performance Ages 6-13 7/8-7/12 9:00AM-3:00PM

You’ll be able to take center stage in different theater performances through the ROSEVILLE THEATRE ARTS ACADEMY as well as create art projects based on theater concepts. Students will explore a range of performance styles and have the chance to create their own masks, props and puppets to use in their own productions.

Awesome Animals: Ages 5-11 7/22-7/26

It’ll be a zoo in here! We’ll be making a zoo for all of the awesome animals you’ll be creating! We’re partnering with RECREATE for this week-long camp, all about animals. Every morning, you’ll be creating all kinds of animals out of recycled materials, then in the afternoon, we’ll explore different art styles to create more animals!

Half day options available: AM session (9am-12pm) or PM session (12:30pm-3:30pm).

Play with Paint: Ages 5-11 7/29-8/2

Join us for a week-long camp where we find different ways to play with paint. You’re sure to get a little messy as we paint with our hands, splatter paint on a canvas a la Jackson Pollock and use tools other than paint brushes to make mini masterpieces!

When you close your eyes while you’re listening to these songs that move you, you can almost see them come to life. ‘The Music Within’ is your chance to share your visual adaptation of a composition, song, or lyric that has moved you.* Deadline: September 16

For your submission to the ‘30 x 30’ exhibit, please include up to 5 images (you may upload more than 5 images for a fee of $5/each) that you feel best represent your style as an artist and that best represent the 30 pieces you will be creating for display. 20 artists will be chosen based on their style, and then given a period of 30 days to create their 30 artworks.
