GREGORY KONDOS In the months leading up to his ninetieth birthday, Gregory Kondos’ exhibits at Blue Line Arts and The Crocker Art Museum offer an opportunity to reflect on his prolific career. Having achieved international recognition as a master of color and form, he still humbly credits art as the driving force that has kept him alive and alert through it all. After leaving the Navy in 1946, Gregory was uncertain about his future. He recalls doodling in his sketchbook during long days on the aircraft carrier — a spark which led him to pursue an education in painting with a bit of assistance from the G.I. Bill. His parents, both hard-working Greek immigrants, backed him one hundred percent in his decision. His studies led him through the French countryside and over the endless blue seas of the Greek coastline. While in Greece, he learned the joys of rural life and honored his rich heritage. In France, he explored the old stomping grounds of post-impressionist painter Paul Cézanne while developing the bold style for which he is so well-known today. Although Gregory has painted some of the most majestic landscapes nature has to offer, he insists that even the tiniest flower is a worthy subject for a painter like himself. Anything that shows strength of life, he explains, is cause for awe and admiration. By recording scenes both large and small on canvas, he pays them the recognition they are so often denied in our busy everyday lives. Gregory’s advice to young artists is poignant but concise: art is a luxury and a privilege, subject to change with the fluctuating stock market. Artists should embrace their talents, but may not always be able to rely on them in tough times — keep at it, but don’t forget to have a fallback plan! Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org • 9

M E M B E R P RO F I L E Father/daughter duo, Kevin and Serena Linn, have only been members of Blue Line Arts for a short time (Kevin actually followed in his daughter’s footsteps, signing up for his own membership in 2012, a year after she) but they have already made a great impression, participating in numerous events, volunteering, and producing their own artwork. Kevin and Serena originally joined Blue Line Arts for an opportunity to share their own artworks in exhibits for the WestPark Workshop Gallery and Gift Gallery. Serena currently sells her whimsical jewelry in the Gift Gallery (under the name “Serena’s Colors”), while her father, Kevin, an avid photographer, sells greeting cards featuring his photography. a busy, on-the-go family, now living in Sacramento; read on for more about this creative, artistic pair. Q: What prompted you to join Blue Line Arts? Serena: I love to paint and make jewelry. After the first painting I entered of a spring scene at the gallery, I decided to join Blue Line Arts to be able to enter more call to artist activities and to be able to sell my jewelry. Kevin: I wanted to find a good place to show and sell my photos and photographic greeting cards. After seeing how well my daughter Serena had done at Blue Line Arts, I decided to join. Q: Looking back on the exhibits from 2012 at Blue Line Arts, do you have any favorites?
S: My favorite exhibit of 2012 is the Members Show where they had a catalog with all of the artwork that was in the exhibit. K: I liked the membership show, as it had many different styles of art. Q: Who are your favorite artists and why? S: My favorite artist is Linda Green. Her paintings are amazing. Also, she has been my private art teacher for a number of years now and I have learned so much from her. K: My favorite artist is Ansel Adams. He is my favorite because he is a pioneer in photography. Make sure to visit Blue Line Arts’ Gift Gallery to see the Linn’s fantastic pieces!

SUE FEGLEY Sue Fegley is a prominent jewelry designer at Blue Line Arts. She has been creating beautiful bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and whatever her mind could imagine as long as she can remember. She grew up in Berkeley, CA and attended Berkeley High School. Between the great education she received at her high school, going to operas in San Francisco, and having symphonies at her high school auditorium, this all made for the amazing high school experience that got her into UC Davis for college where she wrote for the newspaper. After being at UC Davis, Fegley decided she wanted to go on to post graduate school to get her teaching credential and now teaches at Sierra College. Everything Fegley has done thus far has made her into what she is today, a successful business woman, teacher, and artist.
might have these prickly parts on them or look all industrial, so it wouldn’t be something you could actually be comfortable in, whereas my jewelry is comfortable and wearable.
Q: If you could purchase one piece of jewelry, what would it be and why? A: A druzy. It’s a geode and I look them up on eBay all of the time. You would think they would be really expensive, but they aren’t. It’s because they have these sections in them when you cut them open and you can see all of the crystals. Q: Who has been your biggest artistic inspiration? A: I like the people who do art in some of the magazines I read. I also like some of the resin artists. My thing is doing art that people can actually wear. Some people make things that they say people can wear, but they actually can’t. They Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org • 15
Q: How did you learn the process? A: I must have looked at some books or something. There’s a lot of information out there now. There’s a variety of gems to choose from, Swarovski crystals are the best when choosing crystals, but you also have to have a wire. And when you choose a wire you have a lot to choose from too. Though, Fegley does not remember when she got into the jewelry industry, she did say this: “I have always been into make-up.” She thinks her love for jewelry goes back to geology, which is the science of the earth’s structure and substance. She is fascinated with rocks and gems. “I like the ancient idea of beads,” she said. “Some people make jewelry out of fossils! I’ve even made jewelry out of fossil coral.” Fegley says that some rocks show signs of spirituality and power and she admires
that. Even though she dabbled with fossil coral Fegley stated, “I mostly do work with plated metal and sterling.” Fegley is very passionate about her work and her jewelry expresses just that.
