As we close another successful ceramics show, Plates & Totems Invitational and CeramAcom Competition, we open a wonderful new exhibit, featuring America’s Clay Fest (formerly Feats of Clay.) We’re excited to share the facility with the Art League of Lincoln as we share a new endeavor and partnership with our friends in the region. This shared success reminds me of the generosity among the art community, and how lifelong partnerships are formed. The arts have faced some unique challenges over the last decade, and artists, organizations and participants are experiencing the arts in non-traditional ways. Because of this, organizations and providers must find new ways to provide arts to community for familiar and convenient engagement. The James Irvine Foundation has delivered terrific information on research of arts engagement, partnerships and practices in California. And to kick off the summer programming, we’re delighted to host America’s Got Talent, arts entertainer, David Garibaldi. The 3rd Annual Plates & Totems Invitational was packed wall to wall to floor with ceramics to gawk and awe at. If you came to the show on opening night with the rest of the crowd there’s a lot you may have missed. Here are some standout pieces that may not have stood out on your first visit: Brenda Louie has a plate from her Flower from the Sky series. The raw and scoriated bisque is networked with hundreds of pink beads, suggesting the complex embodiment of a flower more than the appearance of one. Flower from the Sky series #001 has a rich complexity that can’t be taken in at a glance. Meech Miyagi, hidden in the corner, has a three-part deconstruction of the plate form with Sometimes I Just Want to Make Pretty Things. 12 • Blue Line Arts Magazine • bluelinearts.org
The delicate impressions of leaves and tendrils are glazed over in uniform green, implying that beauty (and the wishes of the individual) are equally smothered by the tenets of conformity and mass production. Last is Jennifer Brazelton’s totem. This whirling vertical mass of off-color ceramic is as friendly as it is violent. The crinkled shoots resemble soaked clothes in a helter-skelter cyclone topped with a plastic laundry soap spoon, so Brazelton reminds us that This Tornado Loves You. If you have the time head over to Alpha Fired Arts Gallery (up until June 15th) to see the show again. If not, there’s always next year. Until then, take a second look at CeramACom. Take it slow and look for what you didn’t see the first time around.
The 3rd Annual Open Ceramics Competition, CeramACom is up and runs till June 1st. The three winners selected by juror Elaine O’Henry are the paragons of fine craft and arresting aesthetics. 1st place Debra Oliva’s Bowl with a Narrow Sash is a functional bowl with an atavistic color palette and mesmeric complex patterning. 2nd place Tom Caswell’s Crystal Clouds presents a diffuse crystalline surface of glaze that virtually dissolves the solid ceramic plate into the air behind it. 3rd place Ross Hilgers’ Boundary is just the opposite, presenting a solid geometric form with ironlike stability. Beyond the winners, there are many strong pieces throughout the show. Contenders range from the confrontational to the sensual and all parts in between. Jinsoo Song’s Object of Tertiary Contact (Purple Lumbar) oscillates between references to forgiving flesh and fecund earth. Nikki Anderson explores a similar
intersection of allure and alarm with her piece Red Drop; the pastry-like softness of the object’s curves and its surface pink are punctuated suddenly at the top with a spike and a free-floating unreal candy-apple red globule reminiscent of freshly drawn blood. Other standouts include the tense yet playful Catch by Steven Gorman, the dense and satisfying Naked Lunch by Hunter Stamps, and the unnerving Thoughts Looking to Intersect by Mike Rand. And, after each of those, there are still more exciting pieces to see. This year’s CeramACom is a rewarding show, with a great deal to take in. Though strong individually, the many moderatesized ceramic objects together make for a focused show that reacts well with the concurrent Plates & Totems Invitational. If you haven’t already seen CeramACom, get down to Blue Line before the end of the month. If you have, go again, there’s always more to see.

ADULT WORKSHOP SERIES The Art of Color in Cloth: Constructing Small Batik Watercolor Quilts with PIXELADIES If you ask quilt artists why they work with fabric, they’ll almost always tell you it’s because they can feel and touch it. You’ll also notice that the interplay of color is just as important in this medium as it is in others. Watercolor quilts have a long tradition in the art quilt medium. They show gradual color changes to give an impressionistic feel. On the other hand, batik fabrics are noted for their pattern and color variations. These local artists have designed this workshop to allow participants to work with fabric while gaining greater understanding of how color works as a design element. Each workshop participant will create an 8 3/4” x 11 1/4” art quilt out of pre-cut and pre-fused batik fabrics. The finished art quilt can be matted and framed or hung as is.
