Unity The West Angeles Unity Award affirms the faith community’s intent to bridge sector divides for the greater good of community empowerment. Standing together, we can achieve much and in these unprecedented times achievement is necessary. The list of conditions facing our City’s most vulnerable families is all too familiar, which includes record high unemployment, homelessness and over-crowded households, hunger health disparities, low educational attainment, incarceration with no programs for civilian assimilation, and the list goes on and on. Despite all of that, our people have a resilient spirit and find their way to our doors filled with faith and hope for a better tomorrow. There is no one sector, no one industry and no one way to resolve the hurting conditions that we find communities in today. Solutions instead require a creative and multi-dimensional perspective and Unity in those places where we see hope! Tonight we salute our honorees. In Unity, we honor them for their “best in class” activities. Each committed to some part of the unfilled solutions that plague the 99%.

Our honorees inspire me. At West Angeles CDC in 2012, our work with partners like you has resulted in job creation, more homeowners, sustained homeownership, increased asset development, and the food shelter and emergency needs of families are being met.

More than 200+ children received a Christmas toy (a special thank you to our partner organizations!);

Here’s how:

WACDC prepared 600+ tax returns free of charge for families and the seniors that qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit ( EITC);

More than 21, 000+ individuals received shelter referral, rental assistance, food (hot meals and family take-home bags of food), bereavement support, emergency medical and psychological counseling;

WACDC enrolled over 120 entrepreneurs in our 8-week business planning course where 90% of the candidates completed a certified business plan;

We responded to 10, 000 phone/email inquiries for referrals and assistance similar to the Los Angeles County 211 system;

WACDC provided certified Homebuyer Education to 413 individuals from which 13 homeowners received their keys;

WACDC distributed 17,180 transportation vouchers including bus tokens and taxi vouchers to individuals and families seeking access to employment, medical and shelter appointments;

WACDC in partnership with Fannie Mae provided foreclosure counseling to more than 1000+ families;

WACDC distributed $73,040 of direct support in Utility assistance to families to off-set the cost of SoCal Edison and SoCal Gas utility bills; WACDC distributed $30,000 in direct support of shelter referrals, bereavement and other such emergency needs; More than 200+ Thanksgiving turkeys with dinner side dishes were the distributed to needy families;

In 2012, the WACDC partnered with Freddie Mac to create the West Angeles CDC Freddie Mac Borrower Help Center, which officially opened in January 2013. With you as our partner, we reach tens of thousands. We are ever grateful for your continued support. We look forward to remaining… in Unity in 2013.

The Black National Anthem

Lift every voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the list’ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, bitter the chast’ning rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed. We have come over a way that with tears has been watered. We have come, treading g our path through the blood of the slaughtered. Out from a gloomy past, till now we stand at last, Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land.

Freddie Mac

Outstanding Corporate Citizen of the Year Freddie Mac was chartered by Congress in 1970 with a public mission to stabilize the nation’s residential mortgage markets and expand opportunities for homeownership and affordable rental housing. Our statutory mission is to provide liquidity, stability and affordability to the U.S. housing market. We participate in the secondary mortgage market by purchasing mortgage loans and mortgage-

related securities for investment and by issuing guaranteed mortgage-related securities, principally those we call PCs. The secondary mortgage market consists of institutions engaged in buying and selling mortgages in the form of whole loans (i.e., mortgages that have not been securitized) and mortgage-related securities. We do not lend money directly to homeowners. Foreclosure prevention remains one of Freddie Mac’s top priorities. Since the housing crisis began, Freddie Mac’s

foreclosure avoidance programs and the Administration’s Home Affordable Modification program (HAMP), have helped over half a million families facing financial hardship to keep their homes or sell their properties. In California alone, Freddie Mac has completed a total of 12,676 loan workouts from 2009 through March 31, 2012, which helped these families avoid foreclosure.

AKELEE Born in Cleveland, Ohio, raised in Los Angeles California, Akelee was introduced to music at a very young age. As she listened to her mom sing around the house, she would join in and sing along to powerhouse vocalists such as Aretha Frankilin, Patti Labelle, The Clark Sisters, Sam Cook and other great artists. She spent long hours studying, teaching herself and learning how to own her gift, and now it is all paying off. Akelee was one of the top three finalists out of 10,000 people who auditioned in California for American Idol, Season One. She reached the top 45 in the United States at the age of 17. Akelee has since worked with Grammy award winning artists, performing alongside gospel icons such as Mary Mary. She was featured in the gospel track, “Mr. Pretender,” from the gospel album, Weight and Glory, which reached #1 on the Billboard charts. Akelee is currently recording her debut album, which she strictly likes to pattern and think of as “Kingdom music” aka music for the Kingdom. She states, “IT IS MY DESTINY TO STAND UP AND BE A LIGHT FOR MY GENERATION.”

West Angeles Community Development Corporation 6028 Crenshaw Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90043 Dear Friends: Congratulations on the celebration of the West Angeles Community Development Corporation’s 19th annual Unity Awards Gala! Your award recipients for 2013 have both demonstrated a deep commitment to the community and the larger Los Angeles region. This year’s gala is a particularly special one for me as you honor my former colleague and good friend City Councilmember Herb Wesson as the 2013 Man of the Year. I know firsthand of Councilmember Wesson’s dedication to the community and his desire to advance opportunity for all Angelinos. The partnership with Freddie Mac to help secure the dream of homeownership is one of particular note. As California emerges from the worst housing crash in its history, where the American dream became a nightmare for so many Californians, Freddie Mac is focused on lowering costs for borrowers and spurring the recovery of our housing market. This is particularly important in the LA area to aid with our state’s economic recovery. Again, congratulations to both award recipients, and best wishes for a prosperous New Year. Sincerely,
