The Mid & South Canterbury Region competition is one of 10 regional House of the Year events held in July and August. You can view the regions results at houseoftheyear.co.nz from 10 August. Each category is judged by a pair of judges (one builder and one architect) who rate each property against a scorecard. The highest points-scoring Gold Awards in each category become the Category winners. The highest points-scoring Category winners are named the Local Supreme Winner for a New Build and the Local Supreme Winner for a Renovation. As well as being judged for building excellence, entries are rated for their lifestyle value. There are kitchen, bathroom, outdoor living and sustainable home awards and excellence in workmanship is recognised by the Craftsmanship Award. REG IONAL AWARDS REGIONAL SUPREME WINNER Awarded to the two Regional Supreme Award recipients from each regional event: House of the Year and Renovation of the Year.
SAPPHIRE Awarded to an entrant who has received three Regional Supreme Awards regardless of whether these homes are renovations or new builds. GOLD Awarded to builders whose entries achieve 90 per cent of the points available and are judged to be at least 80 per cent above industry standard. SILVER Awarded to builders whose entries achieve 82.5 per cent of the points available and are judged to be at least 65 per cent above industry standard. BRONZE Awarded to builders whose entries achieve 75 per cent of the points available and are judged to be at least 50 per cent above industry standard. REGIONAL CATEGORY WINNER Awarded to the highest scoring Gold Award winner from each category.
NATIONAL COMPE TITION Each year a maximum of 100 entries from the regional competitions receive Gold Reserve status, with all then judged by a new panel to find new category winners. Lifestyle Award-winners are also named at the national level. The two best houses (one new build and one renovation) become the National Supreme winners, to be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland in November. NATIONAL SUPREME WINNER

Home FRONT Timaru interior designer Maree Hynes talks home style
Describe your style. My style doesn’t have a label as such. I love an eclectic look and I embrace all things beautiful. What inspires you about living in your region? The fact that in the one panoramic view you can see the snowy mountain tops, green rolling countryside and sandy Timaru beaches. What’s the next thing you’d like to buy for your home? I am really excited about the buying trip of a lifetime to Europe. Finding one-of-a-kind pieces for both my own home and my business. Amazing destinations including Italy and Paris are on the agenda – so watch this space. Favourite room in your house? My stately drawing room on the bottom floor. It’s grand in

I’m not a huge fan of trends, I firmly believe good design withstands the test of time. If money were no object, what would you buy? I’d reinstate the grandeur of the property with solid marble fireplaces and add more ornate cornices throughout. Where would you spend the bulk of your renovation budget? By renovating a 1950s extension, we want to marry the modern dream of indoor/outdoor flow, but in a style that complements the original homestead, allowing us to enjoy the established garden and landscape beyond.

What would you go budget on? I love the thrill of curating a collection of vintage furnishings. As we have the privilege of being a custodian of one of the original homesteads of the Timaru area, I want to retain the character and essence this property has. A mixture of old and new pieces creates a one of a kind look I am trying to achieve. You’ve got a day to refresh your house – what do you do? When the seasons change I am inspired to change my interiors. Winter makes me crave layering, of both texture and colour. Jewel tones, cosy throws and blankets are just some of the ways I cosy up a space. What should every home have? I believe every home should have its own point of view, it should reflect the interests, personality and passions of those who live there. HOUSE OF THE YEAR 2019

BUILDING UP TO HOUSE OF THE YEAR Registered Master Builders House of the Year is back, and competition veteran Ross Faulkner shares his stories of success. Ross Faulkner is a stalwart of the building industry. Starting out in the late 70’s as a driven apprentice, his goal was always to run his own business. Ross started Faulkner Construction almost 40 years ago, initially taking on small contracts before moving into renovations, new builds, then joining the Registered Master Builders Association and entering his first House of the Year competition in 1999.
Celebrate the craft Like many in the industry, Ross views the House of the Year competition as a mark of distinction. He’s had finalists in the competition for a few years running now and continues to enter because the team enjoy it, it builds good relations and builds his brand. “House of the Year is great marketing because when customers see our results, they have confidence in us even before we’ve met.” But Ross says it’s down to staff experience too, his team love craftmanship and the competition is a reflection of their work. They value being involved and enjoy the reward of having their work recognised – there’s even a bit of banter around who’s going to win.
A winning team The Gold Award won by Faulkner Construction last year was in the ‘Builders Own Home’ category. The major reno stood
out for architectural detail and intricate design; it took skill to achieve what they did, and the judges marked accordingly.
They’re prompt and upfront with any issues and make sure the business doesn’t fork out for something that’s out of my control.”
In addition to top-notch architects and builders, Ross credits his success to solid building partners. He uses Bunnings Trade, who contribute towards the build not only with the supply of materials, but also with the support provided by their team. Having Account Managers on site means they see where the job is at, what’s going on and know in advance what’s required.
At the end of the day, Ross says to succeed in any industry you need people that stand beside you and support you when times are tough. You have to have relationships as well as a good pricing structure and consistency.
“I chose Bunnings because they’re honest – I value that. My Account Managers notice things and act on it accordingly, in time, to make sure there are no delays. If we wait for something that’s not available, it stuffs our job up. But they’ve been good at having it all.”
Backing the business Ross likes a bit of a yarn and has a few stories about Bunnings. “I don’t know how often I tell this story to other builders. Basically, Bunnings stepped in and helped us on several occasions. One time our concrete didn’t have the right amount of cement in it. It could have cost me eighty-odd thousand dollars. We had to rip all the concrete out and do it again. But Bunnings sorted it. They made sure I wasn’t out of pocket.” “They stand behind us, back us 100% and make sure we’re not disadvantaged. The loyalty Bunnings Trade showed me when there were problems is what’s telling.
Supporting new builds & builders Due to timings, Faulkner Construction won’t have a house in the competition this year – but hope to have three entries next year. Still, Ross is excited about the upcoming event, supporting the entrants and seeing the results. “New materials and products are out, so it’ll be interesting to see new designs, what catches the eye and what architects are picking up on this year. There are sharp architects out there doing a great job, and everyone follows them. This competition’s always great, specifically seeing the new guys who haven’t entered before, seeing them come through is brilliant.” Once again, the industry’s enjoying the build-up to the competition and we’re all holding our breath as to who will take out the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. “Modern pioneers will appreciate the detail and finishing of this log home” A vision in the Central Otago terrain, this pioneer-style log home is an astonishing feat of craftsmanship. Occupying a spacious 550sqm footprint, the home has five bedrooms, three bathrooms and three living spaces, including a billiard room. The log shell – built from sustainably milled, untreated logs – was constructed in British Columbia, Canada. It was then imported to New Zealand and assembled by crane on top of a prepared concrete slab. Teams of carpenters worked for months on the soaring roof structure, all of which was pitched by hand and
finished with quality, imported fittings throughout. The house was considerately built to accommodate all wind directions, so the owners are able to be outside and under cover in any condition. The veranda extends across three sides of the house and is readily accessed with doors opening onto the covered areas from all living and entertainment areas. round the globe, smart thinkers know that outdoor living areas are best enjoyed throughout the year. Of a winter evening you will see Parisians sipping wine on the pavements, at cafes with radiant overhead electric heaters. In London, pub patrons hellbent on fresh air are offered rugs and when the sun goes down in Tangiers, well-positioned walls retain vestiges of the day’s stored heat, while sheltering alfresco diners from the evening’s cool breezes. THE HEAT IS ON Gathering around a fire is the most time-honoured way to keep warm. Modern firepits help tame the elements, while giving a new sophistication to 21st-century gardens and courtyards. Mobile, fixed, state-of-the-art, traditional – there’s a design style for every space. For areas where outdoor solidfuel fires are prohibited, gas pits substitute well. They get around the need to burn wood, coal or pellets, and also the clearing away of ashes. Snug, cosy and natural – we’re talking about cashmere, merino and mohair throws. When guests come without enough layers, make outdoor entertaining as inviting as possible – have a pile of rugs and shawls waiting in the wings to keep everyone warm. Add a sheepskin or two for super-cosy seating. WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH Furniture that’s outdoors 24/7, enduring the sun, heat, rain, cold and worse has to be tough. The natural elegance of timber furniture makes it perennially popular, but always buy the best you can afford – the sturdier the better. Remember that even rot-resistant woods, such as teak, cedar, and white oak, need regular oiling or other protective treatments to prevent warping and cracking. In areas of high rainfall, metal is an enduring and versatile alternative. Aluminium furniture

Concrete furniture is extremely durable, and, like wood, it weathers well, pitting and softening with the years. Resin is considered long-lasting but, like plastic, has a tendency to discolour over time when exposed to the elements. Plastic-coated wicker may please the eye and seem practical, but the plastic will degrade eventually – and not before all those crannies in the weave have become home to a host of spiders and other creepy crawlies. PLANT IT UP When using your outdoor space year-round, plants need to look good year-round as well. Evergreen natives are usually easy care, especially if you have those endemic to your region. Palms lend a tropical holiday air. But celebrate the seasons too – add plants that flower in spring or summer, those with leaves or berries in visually warm autumn colours and trees with beautiful trunks and bark that are alluring, even when leafless.
