The Wellington / Wairarapa Region competition is one of 10 regional House of the Year events held in July and August. You can view the Wellington/ Wairarapa Region results at houseoftheyear.co.nz from 13 July. The highest points-scoring Gold Awards in each category become the Category winners. The highest pointsscoring Category winners are named the Local Supreme Winner for a New Build and the Local Supreme Winner for a Renovation. As well as being judged for building excellence, entries are rated for their lifestyle value. There are kitchen, bathroom, outdoor living and sustainable home awards and excellence in workmanship is recognised by the Craftsmanship Award. If you’d like an extra copy or your magazine is damaged, please call 09 308 9998 and we’ll send you one.

FRONT
Wellington’s Meg Domett of interiors store The Axe talks home style
How would you describe your home? My husband and I have moved from a sprawling five bedroom home with five children, to a gorgeous two-bedroom cottage with one child left at home. We’ve always had a casual, relaxed environment full of art, colour and mid-century pieces, but we’ve learned to operate on a strict one-thing-in and one-thing-out rule. This rule obviously does not apply to shoes, children or pets.
The Axe's oak-framed two-seater Rapaki sofa, $1,995, from The Axe has impeccable mid-century proportions.
What would you spend less on? Dining chairs. Let’s face it, they take a hammering, are often situated in sunny spots and you need a lot of them. You can get stunning, well-made chairs at a very reasonable price. You’ve got a day to refresh your house – what do you do? Have an art refresh. It’s too easy to hang some art in a particular place and never look at it again. Take everything down and have a really good think about new and interesting combinations and places for each piece. If it all gets too much, I can’t recommend highly enough hiring a professional art installer. What should every home have? Plants of every size, colour and personality. They’re great for de-stressing your home and bringing real life to any room.
What inspires you about living where you do? Wellington is such a cool place with so much to do and I love the wild nature of our weather. Working at our airport store with an uninterrupted view of the runway, you certainly appreciate how wild it can be at times. We live beside Wellington Zoo in a street lined with magnolias and surrounded by pohutukawa – it’s lovely to be around so much native birdsong, not so much the screeching gibbons at dawn. The last thing you bought for your home? Two hundred tulip bulbs. I plan to plant them densely in vintage tubs. Favourite room in the house? Without question, the kitchen. It’s where the cheese and wine are kept and also where the children congregate when they are home.
“Plants are great for de-stressing your home” Trend you wish would make a comeback? The classic 1970s conversation pit. I love how they are slightly secret and built just for socialising. If money were no object, what would you buy? An original mid-century chair is top of the list. I saw some of the most incredible chairs in Copenhagen last year. In the meantime, we’re lucky enough to design furniture and have incredible craftspeople realise the designs. The Rapaki chair takes pride of place in my home. Where would you spend the bulk of your renovation budget? Flooring and joinery, quality products and attention to detail will make the difference. I also have a crush on black steel joinery.

In-your-face design gets a whole new meaning with facial profiling the focus for print. Go minimalist with Scandinavian-inspired freestyle drawings or go bold with coloured cartoonish sketches.
Wild at Home by Hilton Carter, Ryland Peters & Small, $39.99 It’s a jungle in this author’s house. Carter has managed to turn his home into a green sanctuary and provides useful, practical advice on how to do the same – with some wildly inspiring images to match.

The sturdy Hagen chair’s brushed black metal and oak timber has a suitably industrial-slash-retro feel to work in with plenty of interiors styles. $495, from The Axe.
Natural Living Style by Selina Lake, Ryland Peters & Small, $49.99 Anyone wanting to banish plastic from their home and become a whole lot more sustainable would do well to read this. Lake’s mantra is a home can be both beautiful and sustainable. Think of it as chicken soup for the home.
Deep cover
Deep charcoals, off-blacks and dense browns are go-to colours to create your own cocoon at home. This living area’s floor and fireplace have been painted in Resene Suits, with the room lightened with soft greys and heathery pinks to keep the overall effect from being too cavern-like.

BUILDING UP TO HOUSE OF THE YEAR Registered Master Builders House of the Year is back, and competition veteran Ross Faulkner shares his stories of success. Ross Faulkner is a stalwart of the building industry. Starting out in the late 70’s as a driven apprentice, his goal was always to run his own business. Initially a labourer, he took on some small contracts before moving into renovations, new builds, then joining the Registered Master Builders Association and entering his first House of the Year competition in 1999.
Celebrate the craft Like many in the industry, Ross views the House of the Year competition as a mark of distinction. He’s had finalists in the competition for a few years running now and continues to enter because the team enjoy it, it builds good relations and builds his brand. “House of the Year is great marketing because when customers see our results, they have confidence in us even before we’ve met.” But Ross says it’s down to staff experience too, his team love craftmanship and the competition is a reflection of their work. They value being involved and enjoy the reward of having their work recognised – there’s even a bit of banter around who’s going to win.
A winning team The Gold Award won by Faulkner Construction last year was in the ‘Builders Own Home’ category. The major reno stood
out for architectural detail and intricate design; it took skill to achieve what they did, and the judges marked accordingly.
They’re prompt and upfront with any issues and make sure the business doesn’t fork out for something that’s out of my control.”
In addition to top-notch architects and builders, Ross credits his success to solid building partners. He uses Bunnings Trade, who contribute towards the build not only with the supply of materials, but also with the support provided by their team. Having Account Managers on site means they see where the job is at, what’s going on and know in advance what’s required.
At the end of the day, Ross says to succeed in any industry you need people that stand beside you and support you when times are tough. You have to have relationships as well as a good pricing structure and consistency.
“I chose Bunnings because they’re honest – I value that. My Account Managers notice things and act on it accordingly, in time, to make sure there are no delays. If we wait for something that’s not available, it stuffs our job up. But they’ve been good at having it all.”
Backing the business Ross likes a bit of a yarn and has a few stories about Bunnings. “I don’t know how often I tell this story to other builders. Basically, Bunnings stepped in and helped us on several occasions. One time our concrete didn’t have the right amount of cement in it. It could have cost me eighty-odd thousand dollars. We had to rip all the concrete out and do it again. But Bunnings sorted it. They made sure I wasn’t out of pocket.” “They stand behind us, back us 100% and make sure we’re not disadvantaged. The loyalty Bunnings Trade showed me when there were problems is what’s telling.
Supporting new builds & builders Due to timings, Faulkner Construction won’t have a house in the competition this year – but hope to have three entries next year. Still, Ross is excited about the upcoming event, supporting the entrants and seeing the results. “New materials and products are out, so it’ll be interesting to see new designs, what catches the eye and what architects are picking up on this year. There are sharp architects out there doing a great job, and everyone follows them. This competition’s always great, specifically seeing the new guys who haven’t entered before, seeing them come through is brilliant.” Once again, the industry’s enjoying the build-up to the competition and we’re all holding our breath as to who will take out the Registered Master Builders House of the Year Awards. To find out more about how Bunnings Trade can help you build or to get in touch with your local Bunnings Trade Account Manager, contact (09) 978 2200.

“Three tiers of luxury living are angled for stunning bush views” Nestled into native bush surrounds, this high-spec home in Lower Hutt responds beautifully to its environment. The street-facing facade suggests a private two-level interior. In fact, the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home spills three storeys down its site, opening to the north and west through walls of full-height timber joinery. The interior is flooded with natural light and views. Extended eaves and the stepping of the facade provide protection from direct sunlight during summer. Covered alfresco living areas, including a built-in pizza oven allow for year-round enjoyment of this stunning location.
In the entertainer’s kitchen with butler’s pantry, twin ovens are complemented by fully integrated fridges, freezers and dishwashers. The home’s high stud soars higher still in the grand, formal lounge – one of three living spaces. Dark stained timber beams and a schist stone chimney nod to nature, lending the space richness and warmth. The cohesive palette of materials, finishes and colours are enhanced by the high level of quality and craftsmanship on show throughout. For more of this house go to houseoftheyear.co.nz

“This high and mighty home is built for enjoyment whatever the weather Taking pride of place on the seafront, this Petone home presents clean lines and an edgy combination of claddings. The two-storey Lower Hutt home flies high under a butterfly roof. Stairs and a lift connect the levels. Expansive windows frame harbour views and draw in natural light from every angle. A high stud amplifies the bright, airy volumes within. Spread over the two levels, the 255sqm floor-plan allows for four bedrooms, two bathrooms and open-plan living. The family, dining and kitchen areas all look out towards Somes Island.
Open-plan living spaces converge on a central outdoor room designed for year-round entertaining. A louvred roof opens to the sun or closes to the rain at the touch of a button. Stacker sliding doors serve to enhance the indooroutdoor connection. Dual wood burners and in-slab heating deliver warm vibes in winter. The views from the top-floor master bedroom will take your breath away. Three ground-floor bedrooms all gaze out to the harbour. For more of this house go to houseoftheyear.co.nz

“Interlinking pavilions create a sense of surprise and delight at every turn” Embraced by native bush, this richly detailed residence brings its unique presence to Gladstone, just outside of charming Carterton. Thoughtful design and a passion for landscaping set off the 377sqm country home. Coloured steel, cedar cladding and red entry doors invite you into this artfully crafted home. The open-plan living hall is light and spacious under high raking ceilings. Whitewashed tongue-and-groove forms a halo overhead. A huge open fire burns in a studded steel surround. Exposed steel portals and handmade light shades are just a couple of the
other uniquely distinctive interiors details on show. With stacker sliders that open wide on two sides, the outdoor living spaces become an extension of the interior. One deck soaks up the native bush surrounds; the other opens onto a covered kwila deck, complete with woodburner, and beyond to a pool area. Separate wings house the master bedroom/ensuite, and two more bedrooms, a bathroom and office. Extra accommodation is located in the ply-lined attic above the garage. It’s ideal for grandkids. An exposed black steel stairwell and sharp black kitchen live in harmony with European oak flooring throughout. Structural steel framing injects a reassuring industrial feel into the living spaces. Well-dressed in classic Linea weatherboard, this Wairarapa home marries traditional looks with modern comforts. Based on a standard Landmark plan, the Rata design, this dwelling delivers two spacious living areas, complemented by an entertainer’s kitchen. Twin ovens will appeal to the passionate home chef and entertainer, allowing dinner and dessert to be cooked in unison. The walk-in pantry is a bonus. Direct access to outside allows for seamless serving to the alfresco dining area. The large portico is an ideal spot

ADVERTORIAL
You deserve peace of mind with the Master Build 10-Year Guarantee Giving homeowners peace of mind for over 25 years. Building a house or doing a major renovation is a big deal, it is probably the biggest investment of your lifetime, so it makes sense to protect it with a Master Build 10-Year Guarantee.
Our market leading Guarantee has been developed in New Zealand for New Zealand families. It has protected more than 140,000 Kiwi homes over the last 25 years. Only a Registered Master Builder can offer you the peace of mind of a Master Build 10-Year Guarantee. Registered Master Builders have been building quality homes for more than a century. But very occasionally, even for the best builders, something can go wrong. Choosing to work with a Registered Master Builder helps prevents this and a Master Build 10-Year Guarantee gives you even more peace of mind and is an essential part of any build. David Kelly, Chief Executive of the Registered Master Builders Association, points out that the Master Build 10-Year Guarantee provides much greater protection than both the Building Act and the Consumer Guarantees Act, which only apply if the building company that carried out your building work is still around when
your problem happens. While most building projects will run smoothly, sometimes things do go wrong. Mr Kelly says the Guarantee provides protection to resolve those issues and enables us to support the homeowner to get their home finished to the highest standard.

Sculpting the original building form to create two generous outdoor living areas also allowed for the addition of rustic Siberian larch cladding to contrast with the black plastered exterior. Nestled among hills on the family farm in Te Ore Ore, this expansive rural residence takes care of the whole clan. Enrobed in rusticated weatherboard, with white box corners and wooden gable vents, this Wairarapa home exudes a traditional look that sits well in the landscape. Indoor-outdoor flow is at the heart of the 325sqm design. Sliding doors open almost every room to the surrounding countryside. A wonderful woodburner, framed by custom joinery, is a fiery focal point in the generous open-plan living and kitchen area. A separate lounge, with a fireplace of
its own, provides a quiet retreat from the shared living space. A generous hallway leads to five bedrooms. Double doors swing open to the master suite, a fitting entrance to this luxurious domain. OUTSIDE
round the globe, smart thinkers know that outdoor living areas are best enjoyed throughout the year. Of a winter evening you will see Parisians sipping wine on the pavements, at cafes with radiant overhead electric heaters. In London, pub patrons hellbent on fresh air are offered rugs and when the sun goes down in Tangiers, well-positioned walls retain vestiges of the day’s stored heat, while sheltering alfresco diners from the evening’s cool breezes. THE HEAT IS ON Gathering around a fire is the most time-honoured way to keep warm. Modern firepits help tame the elements, while giving a new sophistication to 21st-century gardens and courtyards. Mobile, fixed, state-of-the-art, traditional – there’s a design style for every space. For areas where outdoor solidfuel fires are prohibited, gas pits substitute well. They get around the need to burn wood, coal or pellets, and also the clearing away of ashes. Stylish new designs in radiant gas and electric heaters are showing that cool-weather outdoor living is finally being taken seriously here. Check

out Heatsail’s classy dome outdoor floor lamp and heater and Gasmate’s lighthouse-inspired Inferno Outdoor Heater. IT’S A WRAP Then there’s rugging up. Snug, cosy and natural – we’re talking about cashmere, merino and mohair throws. When guests come without enough layers, make outdoor entertaining as inviting as possible – have a pile of rugs and shawls waiting in the wings to keep everyone warm. Add a sheepskin or two for super-cosy seating. WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH Furniture that’s outdoors 24/7, enduring the sun, heat, rain, cold and worse has to be tough. The natural elegance of timber furniture makes it perennially popular, but always buy the best you can afford – the sturdier the better. Remember that even rot-resistant woods, such as teak, cedar, and white oak, need regular oiling or other protective treatments to prevent warping and cracking. In areas of high rainfall, metal is an enduring and versatile alternative. Aluminium furniture
cushions and squabs shouldn’t be left out all year. If you don’t have handy waterproof storage or a deck box and find lugging them inside and outside a drag, at least store them in situ on their sides so that any rainwater drains off rather than soaks in.
When not in use, leave metal chairs
on their sides to prevent water pooling in the seats and encouraging rust.
is light and portable, but needs to be kept out of strong winds. Stainless steel has a contemporary utilitarian look and it won’t rust, making it great for the coast, but it can heat up fiercely in the sun. Concrete furniture is extremely durable, and, like wood, it weathers well, pitting and softening with the years. Resin is considered long-lasting but, like plastic, has a tendency to discolour over time when exposed to the elements. Plastic-coated wicker may please the eye and seem practical, but the plastic will degrade eventually – and not before all those crannies in the weave have become home to a host of spiders and other creepy crawlies. PLANT IT UP When using your outdoor space year-round, plants need to look good year-round as well. Evergreen natives are usually easy care, especially if you have those endemic to your region. Palms lend a tropical holiday air. But celebrate the seasons too – add plants that flower in spring or summer, those with leaves or berries in visually warm autumn colours and trees with beautiful trunks and bark that are alluring, even when leafless.
