How would you describe your home and style? I love the old character homes in the Waikato and feel so lucky to have our own 1910s villa in Hamilton East. I love to mix the old with the new, especially in a character villa, and our home is no exception. My husband and I have an eclectic mix of contemporary furniture, different woods, aged pieces from Indonesia, prints and photos collected from our travels and items handed down to me from my mum. They somehow form a cohesive look. We don’t follow a particular trend or style – it’s a reflection of our personalities combined. What inspires you about living in your region? The beautiful scenery of Hamilton and the Waikato. I think many New Zealanders underestimate the beauty and energy of this region. There is nothing quite like the autumn colours of the landscape and the sun shining down on our mighty river in summer. This is where a lot of our colour inspiration comes from. The Waikato is home to such a thriving business scene, both established and new. The people of our region are its best asset, there’s no doubt about that.

What trend do you wish would make a comeback? Colour! For so long we (including me) have loved the natural and linen looks, but I’d like to see more colour. Be daring! We have a rust-coloured velvet sofa in our store. I can’t wait to see it in a home. If money was no object, what would you buy? The Sputnik dining table and Stewart dining chairs from our store. These pieces from Eastern Europe are crafted with love and use the finest materials including reclaimed oak and buffalo leather. Where would you spend the bulk of a renovation budget? The bathroom and kitchen, so you boost the style and value of your home. But always leave money for furniture and homewares. You’ve got to love the pieces you live with. What would you go budget on? Tasks you can get stuck into yourself. It’s so satisfying putting work into a renovation and saving money in the process. What should every home have? Something that’s made in New Zealand.

e’ve all felt a little housebound this year, so the thought of summer around the corner has never been so enticing. Get your place ready for relaxing or entertaining by giving it a spring clean, replacing heavy winter duvets with linens and brighter colours, and freshening dull walls with a lick of paint. “White is always a good choice as it’s fresh and easy to live with,” says interior designer Rachel O’Connell of Style My Abode. “Choose warmer whites in darker rooms, and cooler tones where there’s an abundance of light.” Embracing natural elements such as oak and stone will also bring a lightness to kitchens and bathrooms. “Think about choosing an interesting slab of granite instead of the standard engineered stone,” says Rachel. “Even adding a small amount of oak to an all-white kitchen can bring it into 2021 and prevent it from being boring.”
There’s no chance of that this summer, thanks to the latest trends. Mediterranean-style curves and arches are appearing everywhere from walls and furniture to decorative pieces, such as mirrors. Ribbed wood and glass are elevating kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, and warm metal accents are also hot. Brass, bronze and copper give interiors a luxurious feel when used in tapware, handles and handrails. Outside, give some TLC to your barbecue area by re-staining decks and outdoor furniture, and replacing cushions on sofas. Add potted strelitzia (bird of paradise) for a tropical touch. “If money was no object,” says Rachel, “I’d advise investing in a beautiful outdoor sofa, a louvre-covered outdoor entertaining area with built-in barbecue and bar area, outdoor heating, a TV and, of course, a pool.” Or you could simply add a beanbag or two.

Equally dramatic and elegant, this 375sqm modern design boasts four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two living areas – and a striking interlocking architectural design. The exceptional kitchen is unique in both feel and functionality, with a focus on texture and dark cabinetry. A bartop extends from the main kitchen island to create a multi-functional space. Meals are enjoyed in a dining space that feels utterly connected to the outdoors, yet remains cosy thanks to a gas fireplace in the lounge.
Wall-to-ceiling glass sliding doors on either side of this open-plan living space bring in plenty of light, and create indoor-outdoor flow with the adjoining deck areas. The owner can enjoy a wine next to the exterior fireplace, relax in the spa, or entertain in the partly sheltered alfresco area next to the pool. Landscaping is the final touch to this stunning home. This barn-style home is a black beauty in its country surroundings. The vertical Abodo eco-timber cladding in Ebony provides a simple and timeless aesthetic. An exterior Corten feature wall gives privacy to the outdoor seating area at the front of the house. Continuity has been well-considered in this build, with the same colour palette and use of materials both inside and out. A high-raking ceiling with exposed trusses defines the open-plan kitchen/dining/living area.
The beautiful Warmington open fire with Corten surround is also a focal point. A white kitchen contrasts with the barn door that opens into a separate lounge. Black tiling features in the main bathroom and ensuite. Polished concrete floors were selected for the home’s main areas for practicality and durability, while carpet provides comfort and warmth in the four bedrooms. Large sliding doors open onto multiple outdoor spaces, including a covered louvered area with a fireplace. You’ll be spoilt for choice in this stylish new build. This three-bedroom, three-bathroom home has been carefully designed to meet the owners’ needs. They wanted the property to comfortably accommodate visitors and returning family members, so the layout is spread over two levels, with an upstairs guest bathroom and sleeping area. On the ground level, the open-plan kitchen/dining/ living forms the heart of the home. Designed to optimise the view of the adjacent park and allow easy-access to the outdoor living space, this central hub is ideal for entertaining.

The kitchen is equipped with dual ovens, a large induction cooktop and stainless steel appliances. Two impressive wine fridges are hidden away in the scullery. The sunken lounge is a distinctive feature in the living space, providing a cosy spot to relax by the fire, or read a magazine on the window seat that overlooks the park. Meanwhile, the alfresco living area is positioned under a stylish LouvreTec roof that provides protection from the elements, and can be used year-round. Visitors will never want to leave. This house provides all the benefits of a modern design and connects beautifully with its site. Elevated with gorgeous views across the area, this quality home features two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Super stylish and thoughtfully designed, the heart of the 127sqm home is the sleek open-plan kitchen/dining/living area. An eye-catching jade tiled splashback stretches elegantly across the back wall, and around a window, which breaks up the space and welcomes in the natural light. This interesting approach to the use of
windows extends to the dining area, with its expansive window that soaks up the view. The mix of timber and black features with grey surfaces adds strong visual interest, as does the exterior vertical slatting. The bathroom is a true highlight, with turquoise blue wall tiles paying homage to the serene blue ocean that defines the wider Raglan area. With lush views, creative, clever design and a strong relationship to its site, this home is a gem. For more of this house go to houseoftheyear.co.nz

Style and sustainability were top of mind in this architecturally designed four-bedroom home. The open-plan living, dining and kitchen zone leads to two separate outdoor entertaining areas, one an attractive covered deck complete with feature fireplace. The kitchen was custom designed to suit the client’s entertaining and day-to day-requirements. Stone and timber benchtops, premium fittings, quality appliances and plenty of storage ensure a designer touch. More importantly, this heart of the home fits the client’s brief and is a cohesive part of the overall plan.
In this elegant 280sqm Waikato home are two bathrooms, large picture windows, raked ceilings and internal access to double garaging. A carefully selected colour palette in the living areas lends a feeling of space to this intuitively planned build. Sustainable features include solar power, a 25,000L tank for collecting rain water for use in the house, under-slab insulation, above industry-standard insulation elsewhere, LED lighting and renewable timber wall cladding, with consideration to recyle and reduce waste. Enjoying its position on a lifestyle section in Cambridge, this 300sqm home utilises the full width of its site. Cleverly designed around a central living/dining/kitchen hub that encourages indoor-outdoor flow, the cedar-clad and honed-block dwelling is perfectly-suited to a young family. Entertaining is made easy in the modern kitchen, complete with a well-appointed scullery. There’s also plenty of room for friends and family outside. Partially covered and with a fireplace, the deck can be used by the owners every day of the year.
With hints of timber and a honed-block feature wall in the living space, the house’s interior blends seamlessly with the facade. Connected to the main family area is a separate lounge, thoughtfully arranged with a built-in window seat wrapped in warm cedar. This is the perfect spot in which to read a book and look out to the pool and panoramic view of the hills in the distance. Private from the main living areas, the four bedrooms and main bathroom are located in two wings on either side of the property. For more of this house go to houseoftheyear.co.nz

In winter, the lounge area’s fireplace provides the right amount of ambience. The sleek kitchen conjures up some monochrome magic, with the stone benchtop extending to an alcove of shelving. The butler’s pantry, complete with sink, ensures clutter is kept out of sight. The main bedroom is a welcome retreat that beckons with a walk-around wardrobe, and the freestanding bath in the tiled ensuite is a luxe touch. Set on 3.6ha of farmland, this home is the result of a vision between the owners and Andrew Bydder Creative Designs. Together with Grant Stewart Building, they worked to produce a dwelling that is both modern and energy efficient. The exterior cladding includes Corten steel, EZpanel and corrugate – all seamlessly integrated to produce a stylish, yet low-maintenance, practical home. From the RibRaft HotEdge insulated flooring system, to the Low-E ClimaGuard skylights, the house has been designed to ensure maximum thermal gain.
Meanwhile, a striking curved feature wall and precast concrete panels greet guests at the entrance way. High ceilings and rooflights transform this otherwise dark space into something spectacular. Ply ceilings with negative detailing line the living areas on the the northern side of the house, with double-glazed bifold doors opening out to a sun-drenched patio area that is ideal for entertaining. The clever use of colour and materials throughout has made this spacious home cosy and fit for fun, family living. For more of this house go to houseoftheyear.co.nz

As far as holiday homes go, this Whitianga house ticks all the boxes – relaxed, right on the waterfront and a brilliant entertainer. The board-and-batten house adopts the ideal nautical look for such a prime spot on the canal. Set onto a 257sqm floor-plan, it has four bedrooms, three bathrooms and two living areas, meaning there’s plenty of room for guests to come and stay a while. The large, open-plan kitchen/dining/living pavilion forms the hub of the house. The kitchen is built for entertaining. With white
cabinetry, top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances and a waterfall island, there’s plenty of resource and room for everyone to help prep for dinner. Just off the kitchen, large sliders open out onto an oversized deck on the canal, so when the meal is ready, it’s an easy move to the outdoor entertainment area that is perfect for year-round gatherings. The main suite also looks out over the water. This house is the very definition of a spectacular coastal retreat. For more of this house go to www.houseoftheyear.co.nz

At the client’s request, this perfectly formed 180sqm house on the outskirts of Te Awamutu was built to maximise spectacular views of Mount Pirongia and the neighbouring township. The open-plan living-dining area, with views that showcase the surroundings, extends onto two decks – one with automated louvres and one uncovered – for alfresco enjoyment all year round. The designer kitchen has hardwood floors and includes a separate pantry. High-stud ceilings in this area, as well as in the dining and living areas, ensure there
is a feeling of spaciousness throughout. Designer barn doors, cedar, iron cladding and recycled bricks that flow from the entry to the interior, create stunning features and complement the wood fire. The fire, which has a wet-back system, keeps the whole home cosy during the winter months. ELDONWOOD ELEGANCE This striking Rockcote and cedar home, situated in the executive Matamata estate of Eldonwood, is a true crowd pleaser. Inside, the 287sqm home features steps down to a generous, carpeted main living area, where you’ll find a cedar-clad fireplace and raking ceiling. Tall vertical windows offer glimpses out to the surrounding
greenery, and white flowing curtains soften the space. An entertainer’s kitchen, complete with scullery, serves up functionality for modern family life. White butcher’s tiles echo the rectangular window. Prepare dinner for friends and family on the central island, or open the sliding doors for sheltered outdoor dining. The main suite is close to the living area and separated from the other three bedrooms in the guest wing, making it easy to shut off that part of the house when it’s not being used. Meanwhile, a workshop in the garage suits the owners’ lifestyle. The outdoor space creates a brilliant extension of interior living, flowing out to a landscaped yard. reviews. In the end, we went on the recommendation of a friend of friends who had worked with Nate before and spoke really highly of him. Nate being a Master Builder helped us make the decision. By choosing a Master Builder we knew we were choosing quality and someone we could trust. It was also very important for us to be protected by a guarantee, especially with an investment of this size. Only Master Builders can offer the protection of the market leading Master Build 10-Year Guarantee. It gives us peace of mind knowing that if something does go wrong, Master Builders will help resolve any issues and finish our home. At less than 1 per cent of the build cost it was a no brainer for us.
Q&A HOW TO BUILD A HOME THE RIGHT WAY
How are you finding working with your builder Nate? It has been a fantastic process. Nate brought a wealth of building knowledge to our project. Having someone who truly knew his stuff put us at ease. Discussing the build with him is always a highly productive experience as he is never afraid to give you his honest opinion. His focus was never about upselling. Instead he was dedicated to what he thought was best for us and our home. He understood our budget from the outset and helped us to ensure we got great value for money.
Building a new home can seem daunting, and even more so in these uncertain times. But Waikato’s Nicole Kara couldn’t be happier with her decision to continue to build through the disruptions created by Covid-19. Nicole Kara and her husband Kurt are well into building their dream house in Hamilton – a home for them and their two young children, as well as Nicole’s parents. So far, the project has been a great experience and Nicole credits this to the work of her team of Master Builders from Sentinel Homes. The Level 4 lockdown certainly added to apprehensions all homeowners feel during the building process, but Nicole says she is incredibly happy with how things are going and believes there has never been a better time to build. We catch up with Nicole about the process and asks her for tips for others thinking of building their own homes. What would you say to those considering building a new home, particularly at this time? It’s worth taking the leap. Like anything, you can spend hours thinking about what could go wrong. But now we’re deep into the building process, we know we made the right decision. For us, the timing couldn’t be better – interest rates are low and our builder and his team have capacity. We were considering renovating, but convinced ourselves that if we are going to spend all that money then why not get exactly what we want. We found a bit of land and made the jump into building. We can’t wait to live in a home that’s perfect for our family.
Do you still believe this, even with market uncertainty? We all know there’s a housing shortage, which means we should all be motivated to build new, where possible. One of the best assets in New Zealand is real estate. Kiwis love property – we can see it, understand it and its value holds up over time. Low interest rates have made it an ideal time to build. Everyone is trying to buy homes and they are all being snapped up. Rather than joining the race, and having to settle for something that’s not quite right, we decided to spend this time on our build. History tells us that when there is a softening in the market, if you hesitate, you can miss the boat. Once demand starts to creep back up, prices will increase. My advice is, if you are in a position to do so, now is the time. Tell us about your build. We chose a Master Builder to ensure we had the backing of a trusted organisation. Since November last year, we’ve been working with Nate from Sentinel Homes on our new family home just outside of Hamilton. We’re currently right in the thick of it. Our roof has just been finished and we’re underway with the plumbing and wiring. All things going well, we should be finishing the place by early next year. How did you go about finding a builder you could trust? We did our research, shopped around and asked friends. We really took on board past customer testimonials and
What advice did your builder give you about the specifics of your project? From the start, Nate and the team had a real emphasis on quality and what would give us the best outcome in the long term. Sometimes the cheapest option is the cheapest for a reason and won’t last. We had plenty of conversations specifically around what materials were best. Nate was great at explaining the cost behind certain materials and then would recommend what he’d use himself. Obviously, I’m not a builder, so we came in with no real idea of what was best. To have that expertise and advice on hand was really comforting. A big focus for us was the importance of sustainability and the durability of the house. This led to our decision to use brick for our exterior, rather than cedar, as it requires less maintenance. Do you have any tips for others about how to best work with your builder? My number one piece of advice is to build a strong and trusting relationship with your builder, right from the start. Second is frequent and clear communication. Sentinel Homes is incredible with this, and I would be quick to recommend them to anybody. Another bonus of working with Sentinel Homes is their use of the CoConstruct app. This allows us to stay informed about the progress of the build with regular updates and photos. It also provides us with a place to keep everything in writing, which we can easily refer back to. It really helps us to keep on top of things, especially when you’re trying to think of what you might have missed. It keeps the work trucking along by allowing us to be able to respond to approvals in real time. It is great to see this kind of technology available.

ADVERTORIAL
You deserve peace of mind with the Master Build 10-Year Guarantee Giving homeowners peace of mind for over 25 years. Building a house or doing a major renovation is a big deal, it is probably the biggest investment of your lifetime, so it makes sense to protect it with a Master Build 10-Year Guarantee.
Our market leading Guarantee has been developed in New Zealand for New Zealand families. It has protected more than 140,000 Kiwi homes over the last 25 years. Only a Registered Master Builder can offer you the peace of mind of a Master Build 10-Year Guarantee. Registered Master Builders have been building quality homes for more than a century. But very occasionally, even for the best builders, something can go wrong. Choosing to work with a Registered Master Builder helps prevents this and a Master Build 10-Year Guarantee gives you even more peace of mind and is an essential part of any build. David Kelly, Chief Executive of the Registered Master Builders Association, points out that the Master Build 10-Year Guarantee provides much greater protection than both the Building Act and the Consumer Guarantees Act, which only apply if the building company that carried out your building work is still around when
your problem happens. While most building projects will run smoothly, sometimes things do go wrong. Mr Kelly says the Guarantee provides protection to resolve those issues and enables us to support the homeowner to get their home finished to the highest standard.

This modern four-bedroom, twobathroom home was designed as an entertainer’s dream. A fresh take on the classic pavilion-style layout, visitors are greeted by an Otago stone schist wall and large double door that connects to an open-plan living area. Start the morning with a coffee at the breakfast bar, or out on the deck with louvres that can be closed to make it an all-weather space. This west-facing spot is also a relaxing place to enjoy sunny afternoons. The kitchen features a mirrored glass splashback to reflect the natural light that flows through the large
sliding doors, and a walk-in pantry to keep the clutter hidden. With plenty of glazing and glass sliders, the lounge area maximises indoor-outdoor living. The second lounge area with tray ceiling and feature lighting can be closed off from the rest of the house, making it ideal for family movie nights. The bedrooms are found in the other wing of the home. A walk-in-wardrobe and separate ensuite gives the master ultimate privacy, not to mention its own access to the deck. A true stunner. With its angled roofline and beautiful timber and Linea exterior cladding, this dwelling is every inch the modern family home. With a 6 Homestar rating, it is also easier and more cost effective to keep warm and healthy, and more environmentally friendly than a typical new house constructed to the building code. You will love how much space is created, given the excellent access to the outdoor areas from the loungedining area and main bedroom. The latter also features a generous walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. With all bedrooms at the far end of the home, those
inside are assured a quiet night’s sleep away from any road noise. The generous size of the kitchen has not been lost on visitors to the show home who’ve also commented on the impressive hallway storage. The open-plan layout in the living/kitchen/dining area has raked ceilings which add to the spacious feeling. Meanwhile, large windows capture the sun and welcome the outdoors in. This home was crafted using a streamlined, architectural design to ensure it took advantage of both the golf club vista and the shape of the site. A clever blend of raw materials has been used to create an industrial feel, using steel cladding paired with easy-care cedar highlights. A minimalist approach to living is the intention for this four-bedroom, two-bathroom 226sqm home, all the while ensuring comfort is king. An impressive front entrance is flanked by weathering steel gates. A wide hallway draws you towards the open
living space with sensational golf course views through floor-to-ceiling glazing. This creates a seamless indoor-outdoor flow and lets in natural light. Specially manufactured steelwork adds tangible strength to features such as the kitchen bench and inbuilt seating. Added attention was given to future-proofing the house, including an electronic entry door, rain-sensing electric skylights and a smart vent air system. Forming the centre of the dwelling is an open-plan kitchen/dining/living space with an exposed-truss, high-raking ceiling. At one end is the stylish kitchen with top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances. A feature wall at the opposite side of the room frames the fireplace in the living area. Contrasting with the home’s original brick exterior is the stylish open-plan extension. The living area is ideal for cosy family nights around the fire, or reading on the window seat. The dining space has room to store the kids’ toys in the built-in bench seat.

Large glass sliding doors connect the extension with the deck, opening the room up and allowing natural light to flow in. The home office also has easy access to the garden, a private oasis in the city. In the kitchen, a lot of the existing joinery was used to reference its original style – with a touch of modern flair added to complement the rest of the home.
Another highlight of this threebedroom dwelling is the main bathroom, designed to incorporate the laundry, making the most of the limited space. The main bedroom features original brickwork around the fireplace and large windows. All of which makes for a very smart update. For more of this house go to houseoftheyear.co.nz

FRESH START What do you do with a tired home on an elevated site with exceptional views? You completely renovate it and transform it into a premium family residence. The site, east of Te Awamutu, had all-day sun and looked across to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari ecological reserve, so there were wide vistas to be captured. The clients’ brief was to create a high-standard and elegant
yet relaxed home while remaining sympathetic to the original materials and shape. The house, on a working stud farm, was stripped back to its bones, strengthened and remodelled. Outdoor spaces and kwila decks were boosted to accommodate big family gatherings. The clients also wanted to be able to check on their animals from indoors as well as out – the large sliding doors that lead to kwila decks help them achieve this. The outdoor fireplace uses the farm’s supply of wood for warmth, ambience and toasting marshmallows with grandkids. Sustainably minded – there are energy-saving features, double-glazing and recycled materials – and comfortably luxe, this three-bedroom, two-bathroom home with premium finishes measures up beautifully. Overlooking the Waikato River, this newly renovated 1920s home is enjoying the view through fresh eyes. It has been brought back to life, embracing some of the villa’s original features, while bringing it into the 21st century. The owners wanted to keep the original look of the house but give it a modern update with much improved indoor-outdoor flow. To do this, the dwelling’s footprint and front facade were left untouched, so when visitors arrive they see a home with its true 1920s feel.
Inside, it’s a different story with hints of traditional design mixed with modern living. The open-plan kitchen/dining area forms the heart of the home, and flows out onto the covered wrap-around timber deck. A feature wall with fireplace in the living area creates a cosy space for the family to gather. Other highlights include timber floors throughout, German-engineered triple-glazing with timber joinery, battened high-stud ceilings and custom timber weatherboard cladding to match the original. With its interlapping ‘boxes’, this stunning build is a magical retreat. An exquisite, atrium-like kitchen is at the hub of the design. Creative use of light has been used in this space, with lighting around the base of the kitchen island and statement pendants suspended from the high ceiling. Open and breezy, the culinary area flows out to the gorgeous pool and surrounding landscaping and decking – its seamless flow and distinct lines match those of the house. An outdoor dining area is covered by a roof with
a skylight to amplify natural light. An exterior fireplace makes for an inviting ambience, perfect for year-round entertaining. Five bedrooms, three bathrooms and two living areas feature in the home. The bathrooms are finished in elegant tiles and fitted with the finest features, and there’s a clever approach to recessed lighting and shelving in the shower. This 226sqm dwelling is a superb example of a progressive design brilliantly executed. It’s a home full of modern comforts and refined class. For more of this house go to houseoftheyear.co.nz

GARDEN
FLORAL DISPLAY Once the gorgeous flush of spring is over, gardens can look a little tired or dull, which is when annuals and perennials must be summoned. Pop down to your local garden centre, peruse the flower aisles and you’re bound to find something you love. Just keep in mind where in your garden they should be planted, how much sun they require, how much water they need, and what shape and size they will eventually grow to.
SUMMER
smarts
you’ll be saving yourself a lot of backache later on in summer. Set aside an afternoon and go for it. Do the whole garden, then mulch with compost, pea straw or pine needles. This will help suppress them – for a while anyway.
DRINK UP
Be clever about how you tackle your warmer-weather gardening tasks and you’ll have more leisure than labour in summer, says Mary Lovell-Smith
do well in shadier areas. Most vegetables and herbs also do well in containers. If you’re not an expert compost maker, get pots as big as you can and fill them with container mix, then plant.
S
As far as I know there are only four ways to avoid weeding: spray with herbicide (seriously uncool), pay someone else to do it, concrete your garden or just let them grow. But if you do pull them out now, while they are small,
ummertime’s coming and you want the livin’ to be easy. If you put in the hard yards now you’ll be able to enjoy a lazy hazy guilt-free summer. You won’t be entirely chore-free, but you’ll certainly give yourself more time for other summer activities, or to simply enjoy the fruits of your gardening labour – from the comfort of a lounger.
PLANT TO PLATE
Fancy popping a sun-ripened cherry tomato into your mouth or sipping a cocktail made with your own lemons and mint? Then get planting. From mid-November even the most tender summer vegetables can be planted outside in all but the chilliest parts of the country. Most adore the sun, but if you’re running out of sunny spots, then lettuces and coriander

OUT DAMNED WEED
hot tips
Healthy soil makes for a
productive patch. Building up your soil with compost, manure and other organic material is the best thing you can do for your garden.
The most useful garden tool is the Japanese niwashi. It’s like a short-handled hoe with a sharp blade, and is great for weeding, hacking and digging out roots.
Chances are it will be a dry summer with water restrictions, so before you do anything, check to see if you can use the hose on your garden. If you have the green light, make watering part of a pleasant daily routine. The best time to water is early morning or late afternoon, so hold the hose in one hand, and a hot drink or long cool one in the other. It’s also a good idea to plant drought-resistant species, mulch the more needy ones and/or install an irrigation system and timer.
CLEAN MACHINE
After a winter of inattention, your garden equipment may need a little cleaning, de-cobwebbing and repairing. The good news is, this only needs doing once a year. So wash down your outdoor furniture, deck, house exterior; check that the fabric furniture isn’t rotting or if the wood need oiling; and get the steel-wool onto the barbie… Yes, all those tedious tasks. Then reward yourself.
The presence of birds is
the icing on the cake in any garden. Encourage korimako/bellbird, kererū, tūī, pīwakawaka/fantail and kākā by planting plenty of native species.
Lemon and other citrus, which are sometimes fussy in soil, can grow well in pots. These are best filled with a special citrus mix and placed somewhere sunny.
