Friends at BNIM

Like many organizations in Kansas City, BNIM has become a better company and a better citizen by your example. Your confidence and perseverance inspire the same in us. Your generosity to community and humanity spurs us to action. And your investment in arts and education continues to broaden our collective minds. From our perspective – as designers and citizens - you have shaped Kansas City in brave and wonderful ways. By creating space for imagination and collaboration to take root and bloom, you have created spaces throughout the city that celebrate the spirit of creativity, health, learning and civic pride. Kansas City is now on the national map for architecture, education and art, and so often, this notoriety is rooted in a single name: Bloch. Towers are your achievements. Houses are your sheltering relationships. Gardens bloom with the seeds of your generosity. Long avenues of memory are the roads that link our community to your actions. How fortunate we are! We – the residents of your great city. We - your vast collection of loved ones, friends, colleagues and peers. We - your apprentices, beneficiaries, community and your country. How fortunate we are, indeed, to have our lives touched by yours.

90 So what makes Henry Bloch such a distinctive person in his own right? First of all is his character. Next comes his capacity to love in the best sense of the word. At this stage of the runway, he is not concerned about what he might appear to be; he is what he is and I have never heard him find fault. He is a team player in his family and in his community. That is the Henry Bloch I know and admire. Jim Kemper

Dear Dad, We have 17 reasons (although we could easily list 90) why we are overjoyed to celebrate this momentous birthday. 1. You have always been a loving, caring, and devoted father and a perfect husband. 2. By having given your best throughout your life, the best has always come back to you. 3. You epitomize the values of hard work, honesty, and perseverance. 4. You have achieved the pinnacle of success and significance. 5. You didn’t settle for a job. Instead, you made your own path. 6. You have never stopped growing, learning, and improving. 7. You have continually met adversity with courage. 8. You and Mom have showed your children and grandchildren how to be good parents. 9. In everything you have done, you have given your all. 10. You are truly one of the most accomplished entrepreneurs of a generation. 11. In business, you dedicated yourself to your customers. In life, you dedicated yourself to your family. 12. You have proved time and time again that by trying to do the right thing, things generally turn out for the best. 13. Through your years of personal philanthropy and now through the new Marion and Henry Bloch Family Foundation, you have paid your debt to society ... and then some. 14. In business and in life, you have acted with purpose and evidenced great character. 15. When it comes to meeting challenges, you never take shortcuts. 16. Dear Hank, In advance of your upcoming special birthday (a special birthday is one with a “0” in it), please recall that we don’t exchange gifts but telephone each other on our birthdays. We used to exchange gifts, but for a family that has several tennis courts, swimming pools, buildings and homes named after it, I think we found it too difficult to find gifts that one really needed. At any rate, I want to congratulate you on your special birthday and send my best wishes to you. I recall the times that we met together after World War II, before you and I went into business together as United Business Company. Those were such memorable times. And we certainly found the basis of the United Business Company for the present H&R Block. I recall various other important events as you stayed in business and I completed Law School, and of course, I know we both miss our late brother, Richard, who contributed so much to our company. I would go into detail, but I don’t want to take up everybody’s space! Leon Bloch

My fondest recollections of HenrySome of our fondest memories of Henry, (dad), are of when he talks so proudly of our mother Marion, his flights in the bomber plane during WWII, the Bloch building at the Nelson-Atkins Museum, and the Impressionist painting that the decorator told him to sell off, because it didn’t go with the decor of the house. His eyes light up and his smile is so big almost like a guilty pleasure when he recollects the stories he is so good at telling. He is so warm and welcoming and ready to talk about his pride in the Bloch Business School he has helped develop and nurture. He has had many accomplishments in his lifetime and is so humble. He carries himself so well and is certainly an example to live by. He takes such pride in his family, cares so much about his close friends and gives so much of his heart and soul to the community so it may continue to thrive for our future generations. He is just a sweetheart and we are proud to call him dad. Love, Barb and Bob

Dear Papa, Happy 90th Birthday! I feel so lucky and honored you’ve been such a big part of my life; since the day I was born. You’ve been there for me and supported me always – from tennis matches to graduations, from school plays to my wedding day. At the top of my desk is a newspaper article you wrote called “How to Succeed and Then Some”. It’s been there for many years, and I look at it often for inspiration. You taught me to work hard, stand up for what I believe in and follow my dreams. You also taught me that family comes first. Aaron and I admire you and everything you’ve accomplished – both professionally and personally. We love you so much and hope to make you proud in the many years to come. Love Always, Lauren & Aaron

On one of our family vacations, I remember you letting go of my bicycle as I peddled down a grassy hill without training wheels for the first time. After this first taste of freedom, I was hooked. Teaching me to ride my bike provided a new opportunity to explore my world. Through the many fabulous family vacations we took together, you continued to instill that the world had amazing things to offer. I will forever be grateful to you for my love of adventure and travel. Love, Brian

Dear Papa, Congratulations on such a major milestone in your life--you have certainly had many over the course of your 90 years. You and Mama have been wonderful, generous grandparents, with your humble and good-natured demeanor and attitude serving as a great role model. What you have accomplished in business throughout your career is difficult to match. And clearly, your support to the Kansas City community has been and will continue to be tremendously impactful and will affect others for another 90 years. Love, Jason and Emma

Papa, Happy 90th Birthday! There are very few people on this earth that have accomplished as much as you have in 90 years. Not just in business and the community, but most importantly in being the best husband, father, and grandfather. I am so fortunate to have you as my grandfather. You have taught and instilled values in me that I will always cherish. You are the most generous person we know, and the memories we have shared together I will treasure for my entire life. Love Always, Alli and Brad

The night of my 25th birthday my grandfather, Papa, took me to the Plaza III Steakhouse to celebrate. I had recently accepted a job in real estate but was still very unsure of my future. Looking for some sort of direction/motivation, I asked Papa what he did when he was 25. He said he and his brother had just started the United Business company, which later became H&R Block. Sensing what he just said had unintentionally made me feel small, Papa said to me, “Don’t worry, I would have given up a lot of my success to have your golf game.” As ridiculous as it sounds, part of me believed him and most importantly, he made me laugh. He would later go on to tell me that if I liked what I was doing and enjoyed the people I worked for, I should stay the course. Fast forward 5+ years to the present, I have the same job and couldn’t be happier. Nick Bloch

Dear Papa, Happy Birthday! Ever since I was old enough to begin to understand your accomplishments, I have admired not only your success in founding H&R Block, but more importantly the way you live your life. Your leadership and philanthropic pursuits in the community are inspiring, and your ethical values are a model. In all aspects of life, you and Mama have set such a high example for our family to follow. I hope you have a great birthday surrounded by family and friends. We all look up to you with pride and admiration. Love, Teddy

Dear Papa, From as early as I can remember, you have stood out as a role model in our family and in the Kansas City community. Your perseverance in building a company and commitment to learning inspired me throughout my years in school and as I began my career in trading. To this day, I am amazed at what you have built and the many ways you have found to give back. Although most people are aware of your passion for promoting education and the arts, those who know you best would say that love of family has brought you the greatest joy. It is in this respect that you have been the best example for me. As Rebecca and I began our relationship, I often quoted you - “always think of the other person first.” In other words, the best way to love someone is to consider his or her feelings before your own. Though this is not always an easy goal, you have exemplified it in your dedication to your children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren - and above all in how you have loved and cared for Mama. After being blessed with your love and support over the years, Rebecca and I hope to pass along these same values to our boys. We will never forget the sight of you holding our Henry on his first trip to Kansas City. He often asks about “Big Henry” and how he got his name. We tell him he was named for his great-grandfather - a talented, generous man who accomplished much in business and even more in life. Happy 90th Birthday - we love you. Dear Henry, Shirley and I have so many wonderful memories and thoughts of you and Marion through the years. My very earliest is when Marion and Henry were staying at Boyshill. When we heard Henry and Marion come in the front door, we were on our wire recorder asking, “Will Henry get that good night kiss?” Yes, that’s a few years ago! As you know, we felt that the major part of your success was because you married a Helzberg and I’m sure you would not deny this! Marion is the most beautiful shining star of our family! We have enjoyed your four wonderful children through the years. Of course I have especially benefitted from working with Tom to further the education of the children in our community with our co-founding of the University Academy. A rather wonderful contribution to our lives has been your role as a founding Mentor of HEMP. We thank you for all the good you have done for us as well as the wide swath of good you have done in our beloved Kansas City community. We both send our love and appreciation. My favorite story about Henry is a World War II story. As you all know, we in the Armed Forces were given orders to do this or go there, etc., and we did. Henry was scheduled and flew twenty missions over Europe. Crews with 20 missions were then sent home “honorably discharged. However, they were encouraged to stay, on a volunteer basis, to train badly needed replacement crews for the B17 Bomber. Henry volunteered to stay and successfully went, and equally successful, returned to base 11 times. He flew a total of 31 missions. Thank you, Henry. Thank you.

Happy Birthday! Paul Uhlmann, Jr.

Dear Henry, I am writing to wish you a happy 90th birthday from Mary Anne and me. You deserve to have the most beautiful day possible with your family and friends—I know you will. I am so happy and honored that Mary Anne and I were invited to celebrate a portion of the day with you. We are very much looking forward to the celebration and would like to offer our own special congratulations. You have given and experienced much over your nine decades and used your creativity and resources to make the world a better place. Creating H&R Block was a remarkable feat that is a tribute to you and your brothers’ ingenuity and persistence. Growing the company into one of the most important corporate citizens of Kansas City and our country demonstrated your sustained leadership and passion for business excellence, humanity and our community. You are an artist. Your passion for the community is your unique art form. You have invented this new art form, one that can be defined as the shaping a healthier and vibrant community through good business, human services equity and philanthropy and sustained support for the arts just as beautifully as your collaborations with Andy Warhol and Steven Holl created other important and lasting masterpieces. Your masterpiece is the lasting imprint that you have made on so many lives and institutions across the city—that continue giving back day after day—year after year. The Bloch School personifies what you stand for and have accomplished. No place in the world is management, finance, public policy, non profit leadership taught and researched with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurialism that extends beyond the boardroom

90 and deep into positive community outcomes. Your passion for community and art form is educating the next generation of leaders and artists. Working with you on architectural projects has been among my life’s most cherished professional experiences. Each project has been a pleasure and contributed to my and BNIM’s development including the AIA National Firm Award in 2011. I am sure that Steven Holl would offer the same congratulations and thank you for all that working with you on the Bloch Building did for him and his firm. We are among the many designers and builders who have been touched by your generosity and given opportunities to innovate and create innovative buildings and environments. Thank you having confidence in us—it really means more than you will ever know. Lastly thank you for the impact that you have had on each member of our family’s personal lives. Living in the same community as you has made a difference on our children and their development by seeing your example of community leadership and passion for making this a better city. As you know Mary Anne is a docent at the Nelson and she feels especially privileged to be part of the Museum family, the collection and the Bloch Building that your generosity has made so wonderful today and forever. We wish you the happiest of birthdays and many more to come. Our fondest regards,

Terry Ward

Dear Henry, On the event of your ninetieth birthday, I have been asked to pen my thoughts. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to share some things that perhaps should have been shared earlier. It has been a triumphant joy in my life to have enjoyed our association. I know you have many things for which you give credit to Ed Smith. I give Ed Smith credit for introducing me to you. It is an act for which I will be forever grateful. Starting with a brief phone call and a lunch at the River Club in 1984, I have enjoyed a relationship that is nearing thirty years and too many memorable events to chronicle here. Throughout those years, there are some special things that have held true. You have always placed the highest priority on your family. Your dedication to them and to their well-being has been unwavering and unquestioned. Your life companion, Marion, has been your special joy and your partner in many things. Your passion for art and the arts has been unflagging. Linda and I remember fondly one evening at the Nelson. It was the pre-opening reception for the five museum Impressionist exhibit and we had the honor of going through the exhibit with you. You shared your special relationship with several of the pieces in the exhibit. I remember your comment that you and Marion had considered the purchase of a Degas ballet sculpture, but you did not like the expression on her face--it was not happy or joyous, and you didn’t want to have that piece in your home because she didn’t represent the right emotion. Your home is a place of refuge and solace for your family. I have been asked what it was like to work for Henry Bloch, and I am eager to share a couple of impressions. First, he is a man of integrity. Nothing was as disturbing to you as having your integrity questioned. And nothing was as important as making sure that each and every commitment was fulfilled. And each relationship was built on a base of respect. A second part of the relationship is that I have said you are probably the best listener I have ever met. When we talked, you always let me share my answer before we started the

90 discussion. And you considered what I had said. So, you weren’t already forming a rebuttal, but were truly trying to understand. It was an amazing trait and one for which I will be eternally in awe. A third trait that continues to serve this city was an unwavering commitment to excellence. When Ed first brought the idea of the Bloch School of Management to you, you were very clear that you didn’t want to be associated with something mediocre. That idea is something that you have persisted to reiterate and to reinforce with your own time, energy and resources. And indeed the Bloch School is now achieving national recognition that reflects your steadfast encouragement of the leaders of the University and the School. I am proud to now hold a degree from the Henry W. Bloch School of Management. You have been courageous. You have been willing to extend yourself for the good of others, many of whom are unaware of your efforts on their behalf. You have always stood for trying to do what is right, without any form of self-promotion. I have thought back to the time when you were quoted as saying you had always hoped to be recognized on the sports pages for your accomplishments, but didn’t really expect or want it to happen around such an unsavory experience as club membership. You were courageous and quiet--around that and many other events. We have shared many experiences. We have collaborated to make many things happen for the good of the city and its citizens. We have shared some disappointments. But above all that sharing was honest, sincere and truly shared. It has been my special honor to have been part of your life, and to have you share part of it with me. Linda and I wish you a very Happy Birthday, Henry. With gratitude and affection, Terry Ward

July 6, 2012 Dear Henry, Heaven can wait! Happy Birthday. Heaven clearly had something special in mind for you. You have done so much that truly matters in your ninety years. The rest of us can only marvel and count ourselves blessed to have found our way into your life. Others will remark on your leadership in founding and building an internationally recognized business -- not just a business, but, really, an industry. Your civic spirit and generosity to community are evident all around us. In this way, have have made a vast difference in the lives of people whom you will never meet. Those of us who know you and your family personally cannot help but admire the comfort and love you have shown them throughout -- particularly your love and care of Marion, which are clearly inexhaustible and not to be defeated. For me, Henry, you gave me the great gift of trusting me and my competencies as we undertook to design and construct a conceptually daring museum that set out to break the traditional mold. Of course, you questioned and made sure we had thought things through. But you let us do our jobs, without bullying orundermining. You made us feel we could accomplish anything or solve any problem. You gave us the confidence to step outside the bounds of convention, with success never at issue. None of us would ever have let you down. Thank you for believing in me and the team. Happy Birthday, and, Heaven will just have to wait some more. With gratitude, admiration and affection, Yours truly, Marc P.S. Henry, I heartily second everything Marc has said. Dear Henry, Allow me to offer my very best wishes for you and your family as you celebrate your 90th birthday. While the milestone is certainly significant in and of itself, what is far more noteworthy is all you have achieved, contributed and given to others during your lifetime. We have all been the beneficiaries of your legacy. While reading your son Tom’s book, Many Happy Returns, a particular passage struck me, one that seems apropos as you celebrate your 90th. As I recall the passage, your mother shared with you, while you were still quite young, one of her favorite Emerson quotes, “an institution is the lengthened shadow of one man”. My take away from this was that I couldn’t imagine the breadth and depth of the shadow you have created over your lifetime; it is immense, growing and ever present. Your “shadow” is cast in every segment of our community and across the nation; business and civic leadership, cultural arts and philanthropic patronage, social justice and equity, education and entrepreneurship, and in the sphere and diversity of those who are privileged to be counted among your friends and family. Yet you do this with remarkable sincerity and humility - always giving credit to others. You have made countless lives richer and given many an opportunity to succeed making an investment in their future(s). It has been both BNIM’s and my personal good fortune to have been allowed the opportunity to work with you as your architect over the last two decades for a wide variety of projects. Your steady leadership, patronage and trust for our work at H&R Block, currently at UMKC for the Bloch School and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art - more particularly the Bloch Addition working alongside Steven Holl - has been inspirational and a labor of love. In the case of the Bloch Building we faced many challenges yet your leadership and conviction of purpose made all the difference and allowed us collectively to realize a building that is truly worthy of your contributions and generosity. It is world class, as are you. Cheers to you - and your family - as you celebrate a lifetime of accomplishments on your 90th birthday.

Dear Henry, Do you think Kansas City is unusually fortunate, to have been particularly blessed with a succession of great benefactors who have made visionary, magnanimous, and magnificent contributions to the civic realm? I think so; and no one exemplifies that generous spirit more than Henry Bloch. You have used the product of a brilliant business success to make transformative changes to our wonderful city. But it is not just the great physical contributions; it is the sense of civic pride and responsibility that is generated by your example. For those of us who have worked with you – even, as is my case, very briefly - your graciousness and humility and thoughtfulness will always be an inspiration. I feel extremely fortunate to have had that opportunity. We all wish you a rewarding and wonderful ninetieth birthday. Sincerely and thanks,

A tribute to Henry Bloch

When I think of Henry I can’t help but think of a fine impressionist painting. He is a man of vibrant colors, pulsing with energy and enthusiasm for life. His virtuoso brushwork depicts a man dedicated to family, friends and community. He is illuminated by layers of light, playing off a keen intellect and a generous heart. He is truly contemporaneous, a man of great business acumen, philanthropic vision and genuine humility. Adelaide C. Ward

Henry, I have had the honor and pleasure of getting to know you since coming to Kansas City two years ago. I look upon you as a passionate collector of art and as a philanthropist committed to our museum and this community. It seems like yesterday when, on one of my first visits to the Nelson-Atkins, you picked me up and drove us to lunch. The luminous quality of your smile and the clarity of your eyes launched us immediately to a conversation about your passions in art and your engagement with the museum. I remember how you vividly recalled some of your acquisitions as if you were just in the middle of those negotiations. Your voice and breath filled with excitement, and I realized I was in the presence of a true collector. I must confess, my only concern then, as you veered into Cézanne or Gauguin, was the road ahead! We have had many more conversations on more solid grounds since then, though none more memorable than your presentation on the stage of Atkins Auditorium for the benefit of a packed house where you spelled out your collecting rationale. And while your and Marion’s collection is one of the most distinguished I know, I am enthralled by our exchanges detailing objects you had considered buying and didn’t, revealing how deep each of those choices are and remain. I also cannot help but note that the only work you own which jumps ahead in time and breaks stylistically with the rest of the collection is by an artist whose trailblazer impact is still being felt today. You were audacious enough to commission an up and coming artist to portray your adored wife Marion. Thanks to you we are lucky to have in Kansas City two of the four Warhol portraits of Marion, the other two being treasured at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

90 What I admire in your collecting is your intense focus, your discriminating taste and your passion and sense of awe in the presence of the art. Those who know you well recognize that those are values that carry in all the fields where you have exerted yourself, from business to the causes you support, having a transformative effect for our city. I will never forget our lunch the day after the big announcement of your latest gift to expand the UMKC business school. You were focusing on ways to honor another great leader of our community, oblivious to the fact that we were all in awe of what you had just done. Not drawing any attention to yourself you just focused on the next thing you hoped would make Kansas City great. But magic happened as you asked for the bill. The Maître d’hotel arrived and announced that our meal was on the house in appreciation of the gift you had just made for this city. “You will be impacting thousands of young people that will have a brighter future thanks to you,” he said. “This is our small way of saying thank you.” You, in your graceful manner, accepted but almost as if there was an identity mistake and you were being thanked for something someone else had done. Thus, I saw the humility and pure poetics that describe better than anything your personality. In closing I will recall the embarrassing first thank you note that I sent to you. In doubt about the spelling of your family name I looked up the name of your company: H&R Block! My good fairies soon taught me: Bloch. I quickly learned: same man, two spellings! But today I feel very honored and humbled to call you Henry. With admiration and love, Julián Zugazagoitia Menefee D. and Mary Louise Blackwell Director & CEO The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Working with Henry on the construction of the Bloch building as part of the Architectural Design Oversight Committee was sheer pleasure. His concern for the museum, his ability to ask probing yet gentle questions, his persistence with outstanding issues all proved that Henry is a gentleman through and through. My only regret is that when I took over the Buildings and Grounds Committee of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Henry went into well deserved retirement. Henry is also one of the very consistent trustees, current and emeritus, to show up for museum functions, board meetings etc. and this is very much noticed and appreciated by the staff of the museum. My very best and warmest wishes to his 90th birthday. Elisabeth Batchelor Director of Conservation and Collections Management

July 11, 2012 Dear Henry, I’m honored to write on this occasion, when we celebrate not only your birthday, but your values, your vision, and your commitment to the school that bears your name, to the University of Missouri at Kansas City, to the Kansas City community, and to entrepreneurs around the world. Your business principles—keep it simple, and make it the best—form a strong foundation for any endeavor, and your impact in the world of commerce has been and continues to be profound. Whatever the measure by which a commercial enterprise is to be judged—providing profit to stakeholders, providing a valuable service to the world, or providing meaningful work for people—H&R Block stands as an exemplary company. In particular, your business model’s impact on the lives of tens of thousands of employees and associates is hard to overstate. Imagine creating an enterprise that gives men and women not only the opportunity for income and financial stability, but also a sense of achievement, of independence, even a chance to be better providers for their families. Now, imagine that that isn’t all. You cares about Kansas City. That love of community is evident in your support for the arts. At the NelsonAtkins Museum of Art, the stunning new addition that bears your name is one visible manifestation of your wish to build more than a business—to build a community as well. Imagine creating a venue for contemporary art, African art, and special exhibits that nourishes the souls of the people passing through it. Now, imagine that that isn’t all.

You have been and remain a visionary in the world of education. Your vision for UMKC included building one of the best entrepreneurship programs in the world and one of the best business schools in existence. Your commitment to that vision is manifest not only in your generous financial support, but also in your intellectual contributions and active leadership as well. And the name of the Henry W. Bloch School of Management is starting to make itself known, in this country and around the world. At the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, we hold you in a position of honor as a man who leads by example. In our degree programs, our executive education programs, in our Entrepreneurship Scholars program, we seek to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs with world-class standards. Imagine creating a whole new generation of men and women who are just like Henry W. Bloch: Men and women who are successful, who conduct themselves with integrity, who love their school and their community, who come back and join us in building the educational, cultural, and economic prosperity of the Kansas City community. That’s what we imagine inspired by your vision. So, thank you, Henry, for your vision, your values, your guidance, your support, and, most of all, your example of a life well and abundantly lived. Happy birthday from the IEI team! Best Regards,

Dr. Michael Song and  IEI Team

The H & R Block Foundation Board of Directors and Associates

Henry – Your uniqueness as a business entrepreneur, as an executive and as a personal philanthropist is mirrored in many ways in the history and successes of The H & R Block Foundation. From the time you and your brother Richard created the corporate foundation in 1974, you have led its operations into being an exemplar of a socially responsible corporation. The Foundation’s reputation as one of the most highly regarded corporate foundations is largely a reflection of your guidance and vision. You have helped assure that H&R Block, Inc., as the nation’s leading tax preparer, also works to improve the lives of people throughout the communities it serves. The Foundation is a living legacy to your vision and values. And your belief in personal responsibility to give back still shines brightly in the hearts and minds of company associates. Our communities are better places and our people are better educated, thanks to your wisdom and generosity. Happy Birthday, Henry, and here’s to many more years of giving. Dear Henry, You are my hero! And I am not alone. There are thousands who, like me, are inspired by the unique human being you are and the remarkable impact you have had on the quality of our lives and community. Anyone would be proud to be the internationally known entrepreneur who made it simple and affordable for the average person to file their tax return. But for you that was just the opening act—the opportunity to begin a career of redefining dedication to family and community, business, mentoring, leadership and philanthropy. Of course, as an architect I appreciate your commitment to excellence in design and architecture with the corporate facilities you have created--the H&R Block ARTSpace, Bloch Fountain, the internationally acclaimed Bloch Addition to the Nelson, and the Bloch School of Management now under construction. Each provides a significant contribution to the quality and vitality of our community. But again, you didn’t stop there. Your unparalleled contributions within those facilities including the extraordinary collection you and Marion have given the Museum and your leadership in creating a nationally recognized entrepreneurial institute at the Bloch School are transforming our quality of life and our capacity as a community. I have had the great fortune of knowing and working with a number of truly great people, but none as kind, generous and humble as you. I understand we can now clone sheep. I’m hoping that before you are 100, we will be able to clone you. I am blessed to have had the joy and honor of knowing and working with you. With thanks and admiration,

Dear Henry: Congratulations on your upcoming 90th birthday! Your life has been filled with extraordinary business and civic accomplishments. However, it is your personal character and devotion to family that I most admire. Henry, you are truly an inspiration and set an outstanding example of what it means to selflessly love others. I feel very fortunate to have known and loved you for many years. One of my fondest memories of working with you was when you and Jeannette Nichols served as Honorary Chairs for the UMKC $200 million capital campaign. Terry and I had the extreme honor to serve as the working Chairs for that campaign. Your absolute conviction that “every great city needs a great university propelled us to a successful completion. You never lost sight of that vision, and our broad community has benefitted from your amazing generosity and will do so well into the future. Henry, please know that I am one of your biggest fans! Henry Bloch is simply one of the most wonderful men I know. I have had the great privilege of working with Henry primarily when he agreed to be the Chairman of the new Business Committee for the Arts, which we created under the umbrella of the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City. With Henry as Chair, we had instant credibility, for anything that Henry puts his name on is something that contributes to the improvement and stature of Kansas City. Henry led this initiative in many ways, by hosting lunches for potential business members, to writing letters, to attending endless meetings as we grew the initiative. And Henry did it all with such kindness, such grace and such commitment. We are so fortunate that Henry’s home town is Kansas City. Can we imagine Kansas City without H&R Block, the Bloch Building at the Nelson-Atkins Museum, the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at UMKC, the H&R Block ArtSpace and much more? God bless you Henry for all that you have given to all of us. You have led and continue to lead a life that makes the world a better place. With admiration, awe, affection and warmest wishes for a great 90th birthday. Joan Israelite

Dear Henry: Some people could have retired—retired—from a great career such as yours at H&R Block. Instead, you chose to employ your entrepreneurial leadership talents, and your resources, to create for your hometown an international legacy that will live on in areas that ordinary businesses often do not: Education and culture. First, you selected fine art. Yours and Marion’s major gifts to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art will result in international recognition and appreciation for Kansas City’s cultural stature. Your involvement with the Bloch Building addition to the museum ensured the space has become not only an internationally recognized home for great art but also an iconic architectural piece of art in its own right. Next you focused on what is today the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at UMKC. Your leadership and resources guided the entrepreneurial institute to become a nationally recognized, forward-thinking program attracting scholars from world centers. Soon Bloch business students will go forth and foster and enrich entrepreneurial culture and education in countless cities around the world. I have been privileged to see the brightness and clarity of your hopes and dreams for Kansas City become a reality during your “retirement.” You have shown this community that great art is more than just paintings hanging on a museum wall. They must have a continuing life to ensure international recognition for the painting, the artist, the museum and the city in which the museum is located and to enrich the lives of people around the world. You have also proven that education must live beyond the books and the classroom and produce entrepreneurs who will go outward not only in Kansas City but around the world to make life better for all—especially in today’s economic reality. I know you will keep on. But, in the meantime, thank you so very much. Betsey Solberg

Ken Gibson and Jackie Snyder

My wife, Jackie Snyder, and I, Ken Gibson, first became acquainted with Henry Bloch on the occasion of his retirement from the H&R Block Company. One of the retirement gifts given to Mr. Bloch was a gift to others. To honor Mr. Bloch, the Block Foundation provided college scholarships in his name for young men and women of need. For those who would otherwise not have access to scholarships, the Block Foundation provided resources to attend college in the form of scholarships honoring Mr. Bloch’s life and his life-long habit of living, loving, and giving. At the time Jackie was President of Penn Valley Community College and I was President of Donnelly College. We were excited and thrilled with the resources provided for our students, but soon learned that the scholarship provided more than resources; it was backed by the love, life, and giving presence of Mr. Bloch himself. More than resources from the Foundation, Mr. Bloch provided his own unique and personal attention to the Bloch Scholars and their needs for support in achieving a college education. He often visited the students in the Bloch Scholarship Programs at Penn Valley and Donnelly colleges. Most of our students were from low income families from the urban core and would never have imagined that they would ever meet a cultural icon, an outstanding community leader, a world renowned figure such a Mr. Bloch, much less have such a person take a personal interest in their success; a person who would show up to meet with them, to counsel them, and to encourage them with word and example. Our students in the Bloch Scholarship program came to know Mr. Bloch, to honor him, and to truly love him. To most of our students he was not only the most important person they had ever met, but also one of the most giving and loving persons they would ever be fortunate enough to meet. Over the years he has changed so many students’ lives at MCC-Penn Valley and Donnelly College that he has achieved an unrivaled legacy, the example of the true liver of life, giver of good things, and lover of all persons regardless of status, race or earthly achievement. Mr. Bloch for all of the current and past Bloch scholars Jackie and I can truly say that we admire you, we are awed by your goodness, and we, as they, love you for the immensity of your generosity and kindness. We pray for you and wish you a very happy 90th birthday.

Dear Henry, Happy Birthday! You are a very special individual who has touched the lives of so many people including mine. I got to know you personally when you came on the Board at Saint Luke’s Hospital. We were privileged to have you and I truly enjoyed your leadership. One time you asked me to come to your office on Main. I was nervous but your kind comments about my management style and effectiveness was more inspiring than I can communicate to you in this short note. My wife Judy will tell you that it was one of those days that I came home with a supernatural high because you took your time to encourage this young leader. It was a milestone in my life. I followed that leadership in my career and so your influence inspired others as well as me. Over the years we became friends with a mutual love for Kansas City and the people who live here. You were and are a mentor to me. I know there are probably hundreds of us with the same story. You encouraged my civic work and guided me to help lead this great city both at the Civic Council and the Chamber. That civic involvement, inspired and nurtured by you, led me to receive the JCRB/AJC Humanitarian award now named after you. How appropriate. It was special to me. I must say though, the biggest impression you made on me was in a more personal setting. I visited with you and your family one-day when Marion was in the hospital. I observed the man I respected as a leader as an affectionate, compassionate and loving husband. I will never forget your genuine love for your Marion. I think that day made me understand what an unusually perfect human being you are. God Bless. Rich Hastings

Happy Birthday, Henry! You have always been a hero of mine. I hope you know that. Here are three verbal snapshots why: Sitting at lunch with you and Ed Smith while Ed was talking to you about the Union Station case. You had great, practical advice for Ed. Lucky me to be sitting with two smart people who respected each other’s opinions and admired each other’s abilities. Taught me a lot about the attorney client relationship. Sitting in meetings with you when Arts Council was creating the Business Committee for the Arts. Again, you had great, practical advice for us and went on to serve on the national board of BCA. You wanted to make BCA – locally and nationally - better and you did. Taught me a lot about how to be an effective advocate for something I cared about. Taught me a lot about being a good business leader. Taught me a lot about being a good citizen. Watching you from my car while you were walking on the Plaza with your family. You all were probably going to dinner someplace and there were three generations of Blochs on the street talking and walking. Again, the mutual respect, admiration, and love that surrounded you all were wonderful to observe. Taught me a lot about what it means to be a good person. July 2012 Henry: You have lived a life of meaning and of substance. From you, my family and I have learned five important life lessons: 1. Cherish your life partner – your life with Marion is the definition of true love and joy 2. Work hard – you have said often that there are no shortcuts in life and when faced with adversity remember that opportunity is right behind 3. Involve your family in your work – you hired your brother when asked to do so by your mother; you shared valuable work lessons with your children each night at the dinner table; you named your son to succeed you as CEO; and you supported him when he wanted to step-down and become a inner-city teacher, so he could pass along to others the many lessons he learned from you. 4. Give back to your community – you have been loyal and generous to the Kansas City community that supported you 5. Be kind, humble and authentic -- Henry, you are one of the greatest entrepreneurs in the world...and yet, your willingness to play the roles of coach and cheerleader to other entrepreneurs is inspiring. As we celebrate your 90th birthday, we also thank God for the gift you are to the world. Happy Birthday! Anne St. Peter (and Bob, Claire and William St. Peter)

To Henry Turning Ninety, My friend Henry Bloch and I have had very similar lives. Our families have lived in this area for many years. We are the same age and grew up in the 1920s, spent our high school years in an excellent Kansas City school district during the Depression, went off to actively fight Germany and the Japanese in World War II, and returned to our hometown to marry the girls of our dreams. We were fortunate to each have four intelligent and healthy children, two boys and two girls who have their own families and have contributed to the communities where they now live. So what makes Henry Bloch such a distinctive person in his own right?

That is the Henry Bloch I know and admire. Jim Kemper, July 2, 2012

In the early 1980’s my late wife and I attended a civic dinner representing my company, and were seated at a table with Henry and Marion Bloch, who we knew by reputation but had never met. They were both extremely gracious, treating us as if we were long-time friends. In the roughly 30 years since then, I have learned that the Blochs were not simply being polite; they are indeed one of the most exceptional couples I have known. I lost my wife to cancer some years ago, and realize that Henry and Marion have confronted the disease, as well. Henry’s care for his wife, and his continued compassion shown me due to my loss, have been remarkable. I have continued to remain somewhat active in community affairs since my retirement, inspired by men like Henry who tirelessly give back. Kansas City has benefitted from many wonderful leaders throughout its history-few have had the impact of Henry Bloch whose leadership, business acumen, generosity and example have touched us all. It is a privilege to have known him, and to wish him a Happy 90th Birthday. Drue Jennings

July 6, 2012 Dear Henry, What a delight it is to add my appreciation for your lifetime of service – to our community, to arts, to entrepreneurism, and specifically, to MRIGlobal. You have been a hero to us. From your first commitment to the institute – joining the Board of Trustees in 1975 – your support has been unwavering. You always gave of your time, your knowledge, your influence to help us. It’s evident in the many roles you performed for us – serving on the Board of Directors from 1978 to 1999, serving as Vice Chairman from 1988 to 1990, and then serving as Chairman of the Board from 1995 to 1999. We had the opportunity to recognize you, in 1999, with the Citation Award, and in 2000 with the honor as a Life Trustee. In the Citation, we applauded your “extraordinary leadership, outstanding commitment to corporate responsibility, exemplary leadership in philanthropy, major contributions to education, dedicated commitment to the arts, and significant contributions to the advancement of science.” Those words are still a true description of you. I wonder if you remember your remarks from that night? You challenged the audience to accept leadership for public schools, the community, for our common future. “A leader is someone who sees life the way it could be, is willing to take responsibility for the way it is, and works harder than most people to make it better,” you said. “In the process, a leader is someone who earns enough respect that others want to work with him or her toward that better way.” Those words are also still true, and furthermore, they describe you, and the way you worked hard to make us better. In your time on the Board of Trustees, in 1977, the Institute won the management of the Solar Energy Research Institute, now the National Renewable Energy

On a personal note, I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn from you. I always enjoy your kind stare and your words to me “you are so unusual Michael” and then we laugh. I treasure the way you always make time for me. You impress me with your integrity – a true demonstration of leadership. I appreciate your loyalty to MRIGlobal, especially your support for our moves to grow our business and capitalize on our successes. I can always count on you at our Board of Trustees meetings to not just attend, but to actively contribute and, most importantly, to challenge us to become our best. As I sit here at our facility on Volker Boulevard, your presence is all around – to the North, with the distinctive and stunning Bloch Building at The Nelson-‐Atkins Museum of Art, and to the South, on the University of Missouri-‐Kansas City campus, the Henry W. All in a row, the museum, the school and MRIGlobal reflect your generous spirit and passion for Kansas City. You inspire us with your example of commitment to our community and its future. We are so proud to be connected with you. We at MRIGlobal, a not-‐for-‐profit institute with a long history of service to the community, aspire to model your leadership. Today we celebrate with you, and we offer you heartfelt thanks for your service and your inspiration. Sincerely,

His philanthropy has enhanced the arts and the field of education especially helping the economically disadvantaged student. He is a unique person and I am privileged to be his friend.

Dear Henry, With the exception of your intra-family and connubial relations, I doubt if anyone has been a closer observer of almost all of your nine decades than I have been. After all we did attend the same grade school and high school, albeit you had a few years seniority on me. You went to a different university and your service in World War II was in the air while mine was with horses and tanks. We both began our work at about the same time, and you and Dick made me an early director of that little company you had just taken public. The rest is history in my watching with admiration and wonder your leadership at H&R Block, your guidance from the start of the H&R Block Foundation, and the many facets of your numerous community efforts where we both were often involved and I got to see the strength of your leadership. Having thus briefly summarized the dimensions of our relationship, let me simply thank you for being such a fine friend. I can think of no one in the community and outside my family to whom I could turn with greater confidence that you would do the right thing, regardless of how outrageous my request might be. You have helped me understand what friendship means, across all of the twists and turns, thick and thin that we have been through together. While I remember and feel I knew your mother and father quite well, and certainly both Leon and Dick, and thus your family heritage, let me declare in no uncertain terms that Marion has had an equal, if not stronger, role in making the Henry Bloch whom I and the rest of the world know. It would be a terrible mistake to salute you on reaching this esteemed mark in your life without thanking Marion for her influence on you. And so, it is with the greatest pleasure that I salute you, Henry, and your wife, Marion, on this auspicious occasion, wishing both of you continued pleasure in a world that you did so much to make a better place. Kenneth and Ann Baum

July 30, 2012 For: Henry Bloch From: Kenneth and Ann Baum When thinking of how to best describe you, Henry, my close friend and business associate, it is simply that YOU NEVER GIVE UP and how Kansas City and the business community has benefited from your tenacity. When you first wanted to take H & R Block public, you were faced with many challenges. It was rumored that the Bar Association in a number of states wanted to take action against the company for illegal practice of law. The association of accountants also wanted to take action for practicing accounting without a license. You were turned down by major law firms and no major accounting firm would represent you in the public offering. The challenge, of course, intrigued me. You wanted to keep going…”Let’s get this done!!” and we did. From there I worked on the Board of H&R Block. In 1966 we merged all the pieces of H&R Block together. There were many challenges in merging the different state operations together into ONE company and prepare for the next offering, which would be an offering of national significance. It was a big deal!!! We worked together every day exploring all possibilities. Do you remember when I flew to Cape Cod where you, Marion and the children were vacationing? My pilot of the very small plane was Richard. That is a story for another day. Henry, you decided to push forward and do the offering, even though we had to cut the number of shares offered by 1/3. You said,” Keep going..don’t give up.” We didn’t and together we did it!!

After working together so closely for many years, you introduced me two organizations that have become a very important part of my life in Kansas City-The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and University of Missouri at Kansas City. You were committed to their success. At the Nelson-Atkins, you asked me to help you figure out how to involve the business community and more of the community in general with the Museum. You started the Business Council and then asked me to help you take it to the next level. I have been there ever since. We passionately worked together at the Nelson bringing in the support of the business community and still do. You also pulled me in to the inner workings of UMKC in a similar fashion, and I am still involved there with you as well. We worked closely with Michael Churchman at the Nelson to accomplish our goals. When he resigned and left us with no support staff working with us, the angel from the development department took over, and this brought to me the greatest reward of my life, my wife Ann. We have had a grand journey together, Henry, and look forward to many more good times ahead. You and I have been blessed with wonderful families, friends, and opportunities. Thank you for Never Giving Up. Your dear friend, Kenneth Baum

Henry, on a professional note, having been a Dean at four schools, I can readily state that you are the nicest and most civic minded business person I have ever met. On a personal level, Lynn and I cherish the fact that you served as a best man at our wedding and we will always appreciate the experience and the photo. We love you and as always, wish you nothing but the very very best! Al and Lynn Page

Dear Henry, As one who passed the number 90 milestone, 2 1/2 years ago, I congratulate you on your 90th and wish you many more years of good health in the bosom of your entire loving family. I wish you the continuing ability to serve your family, community and fellow man in such exemplary fashion as long as it suits you to do so. You are a role model if there ever was one of compassion, generosity, vision and achievement so rare, that one is privileged to have ever encountered it. I cherish being one of that select blessed group. I feel, however, my own experience qualifies me particularly to express my endless admiration for the outstanding, if not incredible, depth of dedication, love, support and endless devotion you share with your darling Marion. Here’s to you Henry! You are indeed an irreplaceable one of a kind! Your old friend, Gene

June 24, 2012 Henry, It is an honor and great pleasure for Barbara and me to talk about just a few of the things we know and appreciate about you. We cannot begin without mentioning the many wonderful compliments about you from Barbara’s father, Davis K. Jackson. He spoke many times about your exemplary community leadership and, of course, the frequently repeated golf stories. We remember and are grateful for your work: St. Luke’s Hospital, The Bloch School at UMKC , the amazing Bloch Building at the Nelson Atkins Museum, and so many others. Naturally, I have greatly enjoyed serving with you on the Board at the Museum....not only for your attention to detail but your great wisdom and wit as our most outstanding elder-statesman. Barbara fondly remembers some wise advice in a very different setting. With our two granddaughters visiting one summer, she took them to a frozen yogurt shop for a treat. You were enjoying your own treat and were very helpful in their wise choices including some extras to go on top! You have brought great honor to your family and to our community. All of us are better for what you have done and what your legacy will accomplish in the future. We are delighted to be just two of your many friends and admirers. Best wishes for ninety more!
