FLORENT STOSSKOPF We proudly present two recent acquisitions, unique works of FLORENT STOSSKOPF (1989, Rennes, France) who is currently based in Brittany, France. The young artist holds a BA and an AdvancedDiploma in Communication from L’école Multimedia. He has had solo exhibitions in France (2016 & 2015) and he has also, more recently, taken part in group exhibitions at 19 Karen Gallery in Australlia (2020), and Antigalerie in Paris (2019). Florent’s debut solo sold out exhibition, entitled, ‘Eternal Flowers’ opened In London earlier this year. His work deftly blends traditional themes and archetypes through a contemporary perspective, reminiscent of Jonas Wood, using colors that lay out his complex still lives and scenes plucked from the annals of Classical Antiquity, the Baroque movement, and Modernism. Constructed like collages, Stosskopf’s paintings use saturated and vibrant colors, remove shadows to heighten both their stylized and disconnect from reality, translating the three-dimensional world into block colors and flat lines, all while retaining the complexity of the image.

We have worked with gallery artist Nengah Sujena for more than 12 years. He was born in Bangli, Bali, on 21 January 1976 and graduated from ISI Yogyarkarta. He has exhibited throughout Asia. His many awards include Finalist of Philip Morris Art Awards, Jakarta Big Five of Nokia Art Awards, Jakarta Merit Award of Asia Pacific Nokia Art Awards, Singapore Big Ten of Pratisara Affandi Adi Karya. His paintings are about the fundamental relationship between humans and nature. The artist studied in Jogjakarta and returned to Bali after the huge tsunami and has dedicated himself to a deep spiritual practice that is reflected in his works. According to Sujena, the paintings describe the true symbols such as leaves, animals and mountains where nature is a balance for life in the world. An elephant that stands upright and sturdy is a support for the universe. The triangle in the paintings represents the mountains. The leaves are a symbol of balancing nature.

ZANDILE TSHABALALA . We were fortunate to obtain this outstanding print from award winning artist Zandile Tshabalala who has recently held sold-out shows in German and the UK. Zandlile Tshabalala was Born in Soweto, South Africa, 1999 She lives and works in Soweto, South Africa Zandile Tshabalala’s arresting figurative works write new narratives around the roles that Black women play in art history. Inspired by artists like Kerry James Marshall, Henri Rousseau, and Njideka Akunyili-Crosby, as well as personal experiences, Tshabalala says her portraits are meant to “to re-represent the Black woman in a more confident, sensual, beautiful manner.” Tshabalala deliberately inserts Black women into the canon that had previously excluded, marginalized, and disrespected them. In her work she is interested in topics of representation particularly the representation of the black women in historical paintings. The artist noticed a pattern whereby the black woman in paintings was Portrait Print, Edition of 10 50.0 x 40.0 x 5.0 cm Signed rear with title and date.

MARINA NIZOE
We are proud to present our first works from Okinawa artist Marina Nizoe [b. 1993]. Marina is the first artist from Okinawa whose works we have made available in our exhibitions. We first became aware of her work in an exhibition in Naha about a year ago. She currently is featured in an exhibition at the Okinawa Museum of Art. The consistent theme of her work is "Ryukyu Painting Flower and Bird Paradise”. She draws inspiration from the natural Violin Beetle
environment of Okinawa and the Kacho-ga of Ryukyu paintings.
There are no four seasons in the paradise that is Okinawa, and the temperature is comfortable all year round, with a variety of plants in full bloom. Inspired by the naming of ships after birds during the Ryukyu Kingdom, the artist began to depict birds as beings that cross between the real and the other worlds. This led to a strong awareness of the subject of Kacho- ga (flowers-and-birds painting), and also to an interest in the Kacho-ga of Ryukyu painting, which led her to create paintings that incorporated both paradise and flowers-and- birds painting and the insects that support the flowers and birds. The artist actively incorporates the painting techniques of Ryukyu painting in contemporary subjects. She has exhibited throughout Japan and holds a Ph.D. in Japanese painting from Okinawa Prefectural University of Art where she is a lecturer.

AGUS “BAGUL” PURNOMO We have represented the award-winning Indonesian artist Agus Bagul Purnomo for more than twelve years. Agus ‘creates abstract works painting primarily with numbers. Agus does with numbers what a Michelin star chef can do with vegetables. His numbers sometimes look like people or like they’re literally running. In some cases, you can’t even tell that he’s using numbers until you closely examine the paintings—which tend to draw you in like a show window. Each painting is so different and Purnomo works with the broadest palate of any artist we work with. In photos I’ve seen of him, he’s standing or sitting in front of the canvas with more than 20 paint cans at his side. In ‘Jogja,’ as everyone calls Jogjakarta, I had a chance to see examples of his flower series, ‘Secret Garden,’ consisting of paintings that recreate flowers including pink roses, hydrangeas and dahlias. These aren’t paintings of flowers; rather they’re abstract paintings that give the feeling of flowers. You feel as if you’re in a field of blossoms when you see these works, since they have the same bursts of color you’d find in any garden. When I visited, I also learned from Agus how he works when he’s painting. He doesn’t paint a little every day and complete a painting over several weeks or months like some artists I’ve observed. Agus paints in creative bursts, sometimes working from morning to night. And the feeling he has at the end of the day? Exhilaration, not exhaustion. It was wonderful to hear this. How many people in other lines of work can make this kind of statement? The two works on the following page are paintings on paper and are framed with a white frame. Signed by the artist on the front with date. 55 cm x 45 cm each ¥ 85,000 | $750 USD. Inquire: info@tobinohashi.com

Translating the three-dimensional world around him into flat color and line, he confounds expectations of scale and vantage point. Born in Boston, Wood attended the University of Washington, Seattle, where he received an MFA in painting and drawing in 2002. Wood currently shares a studio with artist Shio Kusaka, his wife since 2002, and the pair often work in tandem, motifs migrating from Kusaka’s ceramic vessels to Wood’s paintings and back again.

MASAKO KAMIYA
Gallery artist Masako Kamiya engages in a dialogue with paint. Her dialogue with the paint and the surface is composed of each dot she makes with the brush. Masako builds up dots of color into half-inch, stalactite-like columns with rich variations in color layers. From a distance the painting is a series of dots, which create larger patterns toward a uniformed center. When observed more closely the third dimension is revealed, a forest of multicolored columns.

Gallery favorite Hengki Koentjoro is an award-winning photographer, specializing in capturing the spectral domain that lies amidst the shades of black and white. This photo of cherry blossoms was created by Hengki when he visited our gallery in Tokyo. Born in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia on 24 March 1963, he proceeded to pursue further education at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California — an expedition that plunged him into the professional arena of video production and fine art photography. A childhood introduction to a camera on his 11th birthday became an earnest love affair that involves an elaborate choreography of composition, texture, shapes and lines.

JUN OGATA
Jun Ogata’s vision transport the viewers into the realm of minimalism and harmony. Creating invigorating works, Jun is one of our gallery favorites and brings us on a journey that is tactile and conceptual. His works displays ancient Japanese sensibility of divulging a convincing and refined relationship between the rigid sense of geometry and the freedom of association within the domains of memory and imagination. His astute process is a personal evolution in the realm of abstraction and minimalism, conveying both representational and abstract elements into an unfailing harmony. The works in this exhibition give focus to the beauty of nature and the artist’s belief that “All things are in a state of Flux”– all things and events are constantly changing – a view that he truly values. In the artist’s own words: “My primary emphasis is on the colors. You can see the varied colors that changes with time and season in the garden.” Using colors, the artist is able to tease out the delicate sensibility of the seasons and its association with nature. The dialogue established by texture and his use of colors is captivating in his works, and it is a crucial part of his creations. With vague images of nature, the imaginative use of colors and textures; and seemingly simplistic gestures, Ogata brings us along the entire life-cycle of flowers and the seasons in Japan. Jun Ogata’s works has been exhibited worldwide and his most recent shows have been in London, Sweden, Singapore, Hanoi, New York and Tokyo. . 〔 EDUCATION 〕 1991 Graduated from Musashino Art University. 1993 Graduated from department of art of Wako University. 1995 Completed the graduate school of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts

THONGCHAI YUKANTAPORNPONG
Gallery favorite Thongchai Yukantapornpong creates art with order and patterns as the bases for his search for pure form. In his work you can see overlapping patterns of line and color in a geometric arrangement with a luminous surface. What is revealed is beauty in the balance between opposing things - between light and dark, movement and stillness, and the creation and disintegration of forms.
Ultimately his art is an expression of the distinctly Asian belief in the truth of the cycle of life and death. His inspiration has roots in many areas including the textiles and clothing worn to the temples. His works reflect the beautiful patterns and colors of Chiang Mai textiles. Thongchai has adopted the same attractive geometric shapes and often includes metallooking colors such as silver.

Confinement and limitations take many shapes—physical and psychological. During the times of this pandemic we have all experienced different levels of confinement. Like many of us, the crouched figure really tries to escape. Although our situation may be different, there is a certain universality to this painting. The eye Tran Trong Vu casts is not of one of scorn but of understanding. His art pushes us think, make us consider our own lives and may inspire us to take bolder steps.
