The meetings are on the third Wednesday of each month at 8:30 a.m. and held at various locations.

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Things are Picking up!

On the Forefront of Business

It is that time of year, where your Chamber’s Government Affairs Committee – lead by Jim Nau of NCCI and comprised of Chamber members – begins the analysis and research required to create the 2015 Legislative Agenda. The Boca Chamber, South Palm Beach County’s voice for business, works each year to create a legislative agenda focusing on the business climate and lowering the cost of doing business. Based on input from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Chamber of Commerce, the Palm Beach County Business Development Board and the Boca Chamber membership, the agenda is a blueprint to chart the course for a strong and sustainable regional business community. As a member of our Chamber, you have the opportunity to participate in this important political advocacy process! This agenda helps to ensure the right legislation is being passed and ultimately the right public officials are elected. These are critical components to the future success of our community and your business. Meetings take place at 11:30 a.m. on the second Thursday of each month at the Boca Chamber.

TECHNOLOGY

The Boca Chamber is dedicated to sustaining and growing the region’s diverse business community and attracting new companies and economies to the area. Through the Economic Development Committee, the Chamber is able to stay at the forefront of economic development issues in the region. This year, our focus has been on streamlining the IDA/permitting process (lead by Dick Lee with Boca Luxury Realty), creating a buzz for the Boca Bowl game, helping to review and restructure the charge of the Community Appearance Board and identifying industries that can be complimentary to the upcoming Panama Canal expansion/shipping industry. Your Economic Development Committee is Chaired by Andrew Duffell, President & CEO of the Research Park at Florida Atlantic University. This committee meets at 3:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the Boca Chamber. All members are welcome to attend. Please contact Sarah Pearson, Senior V.P. of External Relations for more information.

Putting Ideas Into Action Our Technology Committee functions as a collaborative forum, bringing together members of our Chamber. Through these coordinated meetings, valuable new ideas and insights are generated to enhance our area’s growth as a technology-centered economy. Together, the Technology Committee and the Boca Chamber put the ideas into action, organizing events for business professionals so that they can stay ahead of the top advertising, marketing trends and interactive media.

August Panelists

All of these events are entirely free for our members. If you attend these events you will hear from a variety of interesting speakers on relevant topics and provides an opportunity to network. The last technology forum, entitled “Small Devices, Big Business” was held on August and focused on mobile phone and app marketing. For the first time in its nearly 30-year history, the political arm of the Boca Chamber is endorsing a candidate for the governor race this November. Business Leaders United Political Action Committee, (BLU-PAC) is endorsing Rick Scott for Governor of Florida. Scott possess qualities closely aligned with the Chamber’s views on business, and will help lead the state toward prosperity and high paying jobs, vibrant communities and global competiveness. Therefore, BLUPAC strongly supports Rick Scott’s plan for creating jobs and strengthening the state’s economy. “Governor Scott has proven over the past 4 years that he is a job creator and a fierce advocate of the free enterprise system,” says Troy McLellan, President & CEO of the Boca Chamber.

Our local program, which started on September 3rd, is being hosted at the newly renovated Boca Chamber office. YEA! is a groundbreaking program that takes students between the ages of 11 and 18 through the process of starting and launching a real business over the course of an academic year. By the end of the class, students own and operate fully-formed and functioning businesses, which may be carried on after their graduation from the program. YEA! aims to teach students at an early age how to make a job, not just take a job. Key supporters and partners of this national program include the Kauffman Foundation and the United States Chamber of Commerce. The YEA! program requires a nine-month commitment from its class of up to 24 young entrepreneurs. In this time, students will brainstorm and form their enterprises, make pitches to real investors, obtain funding and register their companies with governmental agencies. Business mentors and local entrepreneurs across a variety of industries support the students throughout the program. All of the learning is real and experiential, at the end of the program they operate actual businesses.

The Boca Chamber is excited to have Elton Pride as our first of three segment instructors. Elton is Founder and CEO of Pride Global Management, a company specializing in training, coaching and business development. In his day to day, he encourages business professionals to use what they already have to rapidly create what they need in their business and personal lives. His passion is to see business owners and individuals walk with purpose and create an edge for themselves while creating personal transformations and improving their personal economy. Therefore Elton was the perfect fit for the first “brainstorming” segment of the program.

By Patricia Burdett, Leadership Boca Class of 2014 Alumni Leadership Boca Class of 2014 embarked on a memorable adventure in March culminating with our graduation in June. Many of us have lived or worked in the Boca community for years while others are fairly new to the area, but we all experienced our community in a more visceral and eye opening way than we had anticipated at the beginning of the program. Brian Altschuler and Jennifer Jager (our wonderful Planning Chairs), led by Chamber organizer extraordinaire Chasity Navarro, gave our Class the opportunity to see the ‘behind the scenes’ workings of business sectors from multiple medical, research and educational facilities; to nonprofit service, arts and environmental organizations; to our local/County government. Leadership Boca provides many worthy and beneficial elements including feeling a sense of community and pride, finding opportunities to become involved in charitable causes, connecting with like-minded people and forming new friendships and learning how we can make a difference in our community. Aside from generating valuable connections and friendships, each Class has the responsibility of creating and implementing a Class Project to aid a local nonprofit organization. Class of 2014, in keeping the aim of giving back to the community, decided to embrace the idea of a ‘Cornucopia of Giving’. TOP 5 THINGS EVERY SALES PERSON SHOULD KNOW By Greta Schulz President of Schulz Business SELLutions

OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER

OCTOBER

What’s the new normal when it comes to developing business? This is not the old ‘ask a few questions, give your features and benefits and trial close’. The 70s wants their slick sales guy back. Today you need to be smart, curious and a true consultant to sell. Here are a few things that today are imperative in business growth. Tell the prospect its OK to break up….Rejection is a result of trying to sell someone your product or service as opposed to tell them what you are calling about, let them know it seems that because of what they do you could potentially work together, but (pull back) you don’t want to assume that you are a good fit. What you’d like to do is ask a few questions to see if the two of you are a fit and if not, we decide it’s a NO then we only wasted a few minutes? Sound OK? This allows you to give a NO as an option right upfront. Mining for customers is different today. Networking is the true key to finding and keeping customers but most people do it wrong. Networking events are not for direct prospecting! Go to an event and look for Strategic Alliances, people that you can refer business back and forth to as opposed to hitting your potential prospects so hard. We all know building business on referrals is the best way to do business so lets network for good alliances that you can refer business to and that is a good source for your referrals. Research should be used for credibility. Research is essential today before you pick up the phone and call anyone. No excuses! The most important reason to do your research is to create good, quality questions to ask them to engage your prospect in conversation and truly understand their needs. If you need to discount to get the business is almost always a result of one of these things. a) The customer doesn’t truly trust you/ your product or service so there is only price to use as a differentiator or b) you haven’t truly understood the need for the product. I know need seems simple but it isn’t. What are they trying to say? What impression are they trying to leave, how do they want to be seen? Listen and shut up!! If I could teach people that are in sales/business development to ask questions and listen there would be a lot more success in business! Telling isn’t selling…but it comes from a good place. We are excited about what we represent and want other to be excited too but excitement doesn’t sell, questions and true engagement does. When you ask a question, wait for the answer and whatever the answer is, especially if it may be something your product or service can help with, the best next question is, “tell me about that”, then SHUT-UP!!! Greta Schulz is president of Schulz Business SELLutions. She is the best selling author of “To Sell is Not to Sell”. Greta does corporate training for fortune 1000 companies and she has an on-line training course for entrepreneurs. For more tips go to: www.schulzbusiness.com
