YOUR CHAMBER AT WORK POLITICALLY SPEAKING Florida, Where Nothing Ever Really Changes or Does It? By Bobra Bush, BLU-PAC Board Member If you didn’t live in Florida, you probably thought that November’s elections brought a sweeping sea of change. Here in the land of sunshine, things couldn’t be more the same, on the surface. We re-elected the entire four-member State Cabinet, including, Governor Rick Scott. The 40-member Florida Senate had absolutely no turnover, with Republicans in 26 seats and Democrats holding 14. Republicans picked up six seats in the already Republican-held 120-member Florida House. On the national scene the Republicans lost one northern Florida Congressional seat, but picked up one in Miami-Dade, leaving both parties with a net gain of zero, with 17 Republicans to 10 Democrats. But if we look just a little closer at what may appear very unchanged, there are some sweeping changes that should - key word - should have some very large, longterm impacts. • Governor Scott won by fewer than 65,000 votes, just over 1%, which is a mirror to his win in 2010. Floridians are starting to see the importance of the old adage that every vote counts in this razor-thin environment. • Over 50% of the votes cast were during Absentee and Early Voting. The days of holding all your campaign cash to spend on mailings and ads that drop in the last four or five days are officially over. Spending will need to earnestly begin before Early Voting opens, and remain steady over the voting period. This may be a hard pill of change to swallow for campaign strategists, who rely heavily on using large expenditures to rise above the noise during those last few days. The analysis will surely continue, but in the meantime, we have an immediate concern; the City of Boca Raton Council Elections in March. We need to elect a new City Council member for term-limited Vice Mayor Constance Scott’s seat, and also Council Member Robert Weinroth’s seat was only for a one-year term. BLU-PAC will, of course, be actively involved in making sure that Business wins this election by interviewing candidates, researching the issues, and with your generous donations, supporting candidates who will keep our City Council working to support our pro-business community. Of course the strong support of our members will give BLU-PAC major influence at the ballot box. 6

PURPOSE, PEOPLE, PASSION A Truly Profitable Plan for 2015 – and Life! By Steven Garber Director, Third Level Ltd. Boca Raton is a great place to live and work. We are all blessed with sun, surf, and a sensational business climate. As we enter the New Year, it‘s a good time to say ‘Thanks’ for all the richness we have in our lives. And, as always, take the time to plan for an even better 2015 and beyond. Plan your business. Plan your vacations. Plan your continued growth, in all areas of your life. And start with the three P’s to have a year and a life where everyone truly profits to give and get a true benefit. Purpose: Start with your “Why?” Why are you in the business or job you are in? I honestly believe that the pursuit of meaning is at least as important as the pursuit of happiness. What is one of our innate questions as humans – as seen by the 2 year old in us all? “Why?” We seek to understand, to make a difference, to give our lives and businesses meaning, we become more motivated and fulfilled. It is very powerful to ask about any task or event, “What is my purpose for…” And, as we plan for the New Year, it is very powerful to ask, “What is my purpose for 2015?” My purpose for 2015 is to deepen and expand my connection to my communities: personal, business and spiritual. People: All business is about people. Even the online solo entrepreneur relies on people. How we relate, communicate and connect with people determines the quality of our lives. Think about the people in your life. How can you connect with them even more meaningfully than you do already? With whom would you enrich your life – and your business – to help, support, teach, mentor in 2015? People do business – and have relationships – with people they know, like and trust. How can you connect more, be kinder to, and build more trust with the people in your life? Tune out turn some of the noise, turn off the screens, and really pay attention to what people in your life are telling you. Be present. You will learn about your family. You will know more about your business. People will appreciate your time and attention. You will get results…
