Why Is It Important for Your Chamber to have a PAC? Each year hundreds of laws, rules and government regulations are enacted by state and local officials. These regulations have a far-reaching impact on a number of important business issues, such as: tax rates and regulations, unemployment and workers’ compensation insurance rates; licensing fees and requirements; and environmental restrictions; to name a few. The Chamber’s BLUPAC (Business Leaders United – Political Action Committee) works towards ensuring that you, as a concerned businessperson, have an opportunity to impact the election of those who will regulate your business. For more information, call Sarah Pearson at 561.395.4433 ext. 238
FROM OUR PRESIDENT HELPING YOU GROW YOUR BUSINESS Your Chamber is dedicated to helping you become a better business professional by giving you the tools you need to prosper. Whether you meet a new client at a networking event, create strategic alliances at our roundtable programs or utilize the discounts found in the Chamber’s Coupon Book, you have the opportunity to take advantage of these tools to increase your slice of the economic pie. Continuing to learn the latest technology trends and how to network effectively also helps you operate your business with increased efficiency. This is why we partner with experts such as Greta Schulz, Jay Berkowitz and Omar Periu to provide you with free educational seminars to facilitate your business growth. We just experienced the 2nd Annual Marmot Boca Raton Bowl on the Campus of Florida Atlantic University. This event grew significantly from it’s inaugural year and has a $4 million economic impact to our community. With the 30,000 fans filling FAU Stadium and the international television exposure through ESPN, the bowl game brings our city well-deserved international attention. Community events like the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl and the upcoming Allianz Championship, Boca Bacchanal and Festival of the Arts also create a positive impact on Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County. These premiere community happenings attract tourists that eat at your restaurants, shop at your stores and stay at your hotels. We are proud to support these events that continue to boost our local economy. Business success and sound pro-business policy go hand in hand. Your Chamber works diligently to ensure that decisions being made at City Hall, the County Commission and the State Capitol are helping you advance in your business and not deter from increasing your bottom line. Lastly, I am honored to welcome the new Chairman of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. Jerry Fedele will carry the gavel as Chairman of the Board with the support of Chair-Elect Ethel Isaacs Williams, Vice-Chair Rick Hayduk and Treasurer Michael Kaufman. In addition, Randy Nobles will continue his leadership on the Executive Committee as Immediate Past Chair. I look forward to working with these leaders to help Advance Commerce and your business growth. Together, we all make Boca Raton the BEST place to Live, Work, Learn and Play! Moving Forward,

GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS CHAMBER ANNOUNCES THE 2016 LEGISLATIVE AGENDA 2016 South Palm Beach County The South Palm Beach County Legislative Agenda sets priority issues and regional advocacy in motion for our City Council, County Commission, Business Legislative Agenda State Legislators and U.S. Congressional leaders during the 2016 sessions.
Protecting Business
The Boca Chamber, South Palm Beach County’s voice for business, has created its annual Legislative Agenda. It was developed based on input from 13 entities including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Florida Chamber of Commerce, the Palm Beach County Business Development Board and The Boca Chamber membership. The agenda is a blueprint to chart the course for a strong and sustainable regional business community, and is focused on creating a positive business climate and lowering the cost of doing business. As you know, The Chamber uses the items outlined in the legislative agenda as a guideline to endorse pro-business candidates for city, county and state elections. This is done through our political action committee Business Leaders United Political Action Committee (BLU-PAC). Ensuring a pro-business environment where your company has the opportunity to succeed and thrive is a priority for The Chamber. In order to provide that environment, it is critical that our elected officials understand the needs and demands on what it takes to operate a successful business. BLU-PAC exists to endorse and fund candidates that are in alignment with The Boca Chamber’s views and priorities regarding business.

In addition, The Chamber supports the University as it seeks to achieve these goals by creating a steering committee of partners, which includes representatives from the University’s administration, student body, faculty, and police and fire departments; representatives from City of Boca Raton’s leadership; and community representation, including Chamber leaders, local business owners, and residents. • Monetize the City-owned former Wildflower property for purposes of increasing City revenue to improve infrastructure and the downtown while creating a sense of place. • Create an Independent CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency) Director to enhance the CRA district and create a sense of place in Downtown Boca Raton. • Create additional parking and transportation opportunities that meet the demands of sustainable growth to include the construction of a parking garage, establishment of a Downtown and FAU circulator. • Support targeted and timely annexation of those areas that provide opportunity to enhance the City of Boca Raton and increase its tax base tax and revenue, create jobs and support economic development. • Support the BID (Business Improvement District) Steering Committee and its activities to provide a funding mechanism to enhance and improve the Downtown infrastructure, parking, transportation and marketing.Support the BID (Business Improvement District) Steering Committee and its activities to provide a funding mechanism to enhance and improve the Downtown. • Support the Research Park at Florida Atlantic University’s efforts to further integrate its activities with those of the wider business community and Florida Atlantic University in order to ensure a viable environment for technology entrepreneurs to develop and grow successful companies that create jobs and improve the quality of place in Boca Raton. • Support a Foreign Trade Zone (“FTZ”) encompassing the airport, the Research Park at FAU and adjoining commercial areas. • Advocate for the use of public/private partnerships to deliver capital and infrastructure improvements in the City of Boca Raton. • Support pension and other benefit reforms to sustain the City of Boca Raton and mitigate financial risk to the city. • Support those public policies which sustain Boca Raton’s quality of life as a place to live, work, learn and play.

TECHNOLOGY Tips from TechSplosion! Presenters Our Technology committee functions as a collaborative forum, bringing together Chamber Members to increase knowledge about the upcoming trends in technology. In October, we hosted TechSplosion, an interactive technology seminar, that featured seven leading experts in the technology industry. Here are some tips from the presenters: - Mobile messaging is a channel that works best when integrated across the entire digital marketing mix, not only helping to increase customers’ basket size, but delivering powerful customer engagement. (Mark Smith, COO, 3Cinteractive) - In order for your website to be considered responsive it needs to provide an optimal viewing and interaction experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning, and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones). (Alex Oliveria, CEO, Prediq Media) - Prospective clients expect immediate engagement. If you take your time responding, they will have already moved on. (Craig Agranoff, FAU Professor, President, PoliticalConsulting.com)
2016
- To see measurable results on LinkedIn, you need to stay active on the site, continually building your Network with personalized invitations to connect. Always initiate the invitation from the person’s profile to personalize, and Share Updates of value often. (Debbie Wemyss, President, DW Consulting Solutions) - Reputation Management is the strategy of protecting your brand, your name and your CEOs name in online searches. Create a report of your current online reputation, take screen shots of Google searches for your name and your brand. (Jay Berkowitz, Founder & CEO, Ten Golden Rules) - When posting on your business’ Facebook page, the most important thing is to engage, entertain and educate about your organization’s products or servcies. (Morgan Goldstein, Marketing & Communications, Boca Chamber) - When uploading an informational video to YouTube, title it exactly what you expect someone searching for that information would type into the search bar. Often this will take the form of a question, like ‘How do I...’ or ‘What are the benefits of...’ (Jennifer Jager, Creative Director, Plum Productions) Connection Magazine | 7

Yet many mistakenly treat these as fixed expenses. Cost control can be achieved by managing energy use, and fortunately, there are simple steps that businesses can take to reduce energy use and improve the bottom line. FPL recognizes that reducing operating costs and managing energy usage is crucial for businesses trying to stay competitive and run successfully. That is why the company provides businesses with custom solutions to help manage electricity expenses and identify ways to save through FPL’s free Business Energy Evaluation (BEE) and Online Business Energy Dashboard. Enhancing Community: Friends of the Boca Raton Pubic Library Receive Grant from IBM for New Discover Studio
Boca Raton-based Green Integrated Marketing Services has been awarded the marketing services account for Delray Recovery Center. Green is joining Delray Recovery at a pivotal moment, as the company changes its name to the Mandala Healing Center. Green will be providing a range of services to facilitate the company’s rebrand, including video and radio production; social media and blog content; and PR and media outreach. Delray Recovery Center has a rich history of providing exceptional clinical care to individuals suffering from substance misuse disorders and other addictions. The new name, Mandala Healing Center, represents the company’s holistic approach to recovery, and epitomizes their treatment protocol — “Not Treatment. Healing.” Protecting Business: Targeted Tax Reforms Will Make Florida More Competitive In an ongoing effort to make Florida more competitive, the Florida Chamber of Commerce today announces support of targeted tax reforms that will further strengthen Florida’s economy and families, including reducing the business rent tax, reducing the sales tax on manufacturing machinery and equipment and continuing to support a reduction of the corporate income tax. The Florida Chamber will continue to support reducing Florida’s corporate income tax. Since Governor Scott and the Florida Chamber started championing increasing the corporate income tax exemption in 2011, 79 percent of qualifying Florida businesses are fully exempt from paying corporate income tax under the current $50,000 exemption. Florida is currently the only state in the nation that charges a Business Rent Tax. That means in Florida, businesses pay a six percent tax on the space they lease, including added costs to that lease, such as property taxes, maintenance and the cost of insurance.
The Boca Raton Public Library is pleased to announce that IBM has awarded a $2,000 grant to Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library for the new Discover Studio. Each year, IBM provides grants for specific projects to non-profit organizations that have IBM retirees as volunteers.
