Dente reports that Campolio thrives and excels in bringing together locally sourced products to exceed member expectations through a locally cultivated culinary story. To create unique culinary experiences, he is looking forward to meeting local provisioners and learning more about the wide variety of fresh ingredients available throughout Florida, especially those near the Club. Brightline’s Boca station follows the commencement of construction for the station’s parking garage, announced in December of 2021. “As a premier business and leisure destination, Boca Raton is a perfect fit for Brightline and will be an integral part of our network that will further connect the state of Florida,” said Patrick Goddard, president of Brightline. “Brightline stations help enhance the local communities and economies where we operate and provide travelers with quick access to state-wide lifestyle and tourist destinations. We look forward to building a long and productive partnership with the Boca community.” In 2021, the City of Boca Raton was awarded a $16.3 million Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement (CRISI) Grant from the FRA to fund a portion of the construction of the Brightline Train Station, parking garage and associated rail infrastructure. In addition to the CRISI grant, the City has provided a commitment of $9.9 million towards funding the parking garage. The balance of the project, approximately $30 million, will be funded by
Brightline. Construction of the Boca Raton station is expected to create more than 480 jobs during construction while contributing more than $23 million in wages. The station is expected to strengthen ties between Boca Raton and South and Central Florida. By connecting to the broader Brightline system, local employers will have access to a bigger employee pool and workers will gain access to an additional 89,000 office jobs within average commute times. This investment will continue to make Boca Raton one of the most desirable and vibrant places to live, work and visit. In addition to benefitting commuters and other local residents, Brightline will serve a broad leisure travel population, and will spur increased tourism to Boca Raton. Upon stabilization, it is projected that approximately 129,000 visitors annually will use Brightline to visit Boca Raton, expanding attendance at local attractions and increasing spending at local hotels, restaurants and shops. “Brightline will be a game-changer for Boca Raton, and especially our downtown,” said Mayor Scott Singer. “We look forward to welcoming the many riders who will work at our thriving businesses and visit our cultural, dining, and shopping attractions, and for our residents to connect to a major transportation network from Miami to Orlando. Thanks to our strong partnership with Brightline and support of our Congressional delegation for an FRA grant, we can’t wait to say all aboard in Boca Raton!” Also under construction is the

455-space parking garage that will service Brightline’s Boca station and visitors to the downtown library, who will have dedicated, covered, and complimentary spaces on the first floor. In October 2021, Brightline completed construction of the new Community Garden for the Junior League of Boca Raton, as well as a temporary parking lot for the downtown library. Brightline managed and funded the construction of both projects as part of the agreement to build the new station. “Kaufman Lynn Construction is excited to be building this new station and garage with Brightline, the City of Boca Raton and the Federal Railroad Administration,” said Michael Kaufman, CEO of Kaufman Lynn Construction. “The entire team is excited to help connect South Florida and Central Florida with this Brightline rail stop.” Brightline currently serves Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, with its expansion station in Aventura opening in 2022. Brightline’s current construction project to Orlando is more than 70 percent complete with over 1,300 daily workers on the job tallying more than four million hours of work. In January of 2022, Brightline began daily crew training and qualifying test runs between West Palm Beach and Cocoa. Over an eight-year period, Brightline’s corridor between Miami and Orlando will result in $6.4 billion in economic impact while creating more than 10,000 jobs. Construction of the highly anticipated expansion to Orlando is on track to be complete by the end of 2022, with service to begin in early 2023.

Counting their Blessings She lost her mother, sister, and brother when their house collapsed from the massive 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Haiti on Jan. 12, 2010. Jude Saincyr and her cousin, the only survivors in their home, were stuck under a bed, which shielded them from the rubble. “The bricks fell on the bed and one side of the bed broke,” Saincyr, a graduating senior at Atlantic High School, recalled this week. “We were under the other side until they found us about four hours later.” As we enter the season of giving, Saincyr has so much for which to be grateful: a new lease on life and the opportunity to get a college education, thanks to a local nonprofit organization. After the disaster, her father sent her to Tallahassee, but the teenager did not attend school for a year. It was not until she came to live with her grandparents in Delray Beach and enrolled in high school that a teacher introduced her to Bound for College, an organization that helps at-risk students in south Palm Beach County enter and complete college. That opportunity was priceless, she said, adding that the organization, formerly known as Delray Students First, prepared her through practice to get better
scores on the SAT and ACT tests. “They made me a better test taker through lots of practice every week,” said Saincyr, who plans to pursue her nursing degree at Florida Atlantic University in the Fall. “We don’t get our motivations unless there is someone there to motivate you. We don’t know what we want unless someone tells us about it.” Like Saincyr, a handful of students who were enrolled in Bound for College, shared their stories to a roomful of people at Delray Marketplace. They are grateful for the life skills, career planning, mental health counseling, college tours and educational field trips that the program provides. “Our motivation doesn’t come from home but from teachers. Teachers were a big impact in my life. They motivated me to do so much,” said Hadelle Estimphile, an Atlantic High alum and now a sophomore at FAU. College was not in her reach for various reasons, she said, until she was introduced to Bound for College. “I didn’t know how I was going to pay for college, but they helped me with my essays and helped me improve my SAT and ACT scores, so I could get 75 percent Bright Future Scholarship. Now, I don’t
have to worry about money.” Through the affiliation, the students were awarded the prestigious Eda and Cliff Viner Community Scholarship, a four-year award to a state university or college for academically deserving students in Boca Raton and Delray Beach who have financial needs and are community service driven. Despite last year’s challenges, many of us are still thankful, and although we have the chance for a more normal Thanksgiving this year, many, such as Anna Marie Valdez, will still connect virtually. The mother of three, who lost a sister, a neighbor and a brother-in-law to COVID-19, has not mustered the courage to venture out. “I am still not comfortable getting around crowds and I can’t say if and when I will be,” she said. Upon returning to school, Aiden hit the jackpot when his elementary school teacher handpicked him to be in Star Makers, a STEM-centered afterschool program on campus. “We have a lot of fun,” said Aiden, who is thankful for being back in school after being cooped up in his home. “We learn about airplanes, and we learn how
to take pictures and how to wash clothes and cook.” Samuel is grateful for loving parents. “I’m most thankful for my family and that they love me, and they take care of me every time I need care, or when I need help with homework,” the fourth grader at Orchard View Elementary said. “Some other kids might get money, but I get love. Some kids may get gifts, but I get hugs.” Like many of you, I am grateful for so many things: the essential workers doctors, nurses and other medical workers who have braved the virus to attend to patients in nursing homes, hospitals and clinics, and saved many lives - law enforcement and fire personnel, postal employees, delivery workers and those who work at supermarkets, pet stores and pharmacies, farms and processing plants, factories and distribution centers. Let’s not forget the teachers, custodians, and sanitation workers. Finally, I’m thankful for this opportunity to opine on the important issues of the day – exhorting, explaining, deploring and applauding. I am also grateful for you, our readers who have continued to support this newspaper, since our inception.
POSITIVE LIVING By: Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Hospitality Can Be Your Daily Experience! A hospitable heart must always precede a hospitable action. You don’t need to open the doors of your house to anyone, including strangers, but it’s necessary to have the doors of your heart noticeably ready to open to other fellow humans! In fact, I have offered to some of my audiences the challenge: “Be a hospitality center wherever you are, where others can approach you without fear, with significant benefits for them, and for yourself as well.” Indeed, there’s nothing good anyone ever does unto others which does not reward that individual even more than the imJanuary 28 - February 3, 2022
mediate beneficiary of a kind gesture! If you are to make hospitality a daily experience, you need to manifest a welcoming disposition to all you meet. Not just your words but your countenance must convey that reality. Most people can detect ‘yes faces” and “no faces,” and it is to the former that others gravitate. As social creatures, many humans experience lonely days on account of the lack of direct personal contact with fellow humans. It’s not sufficient to meet the grocer, to greet the postman, to wave to a neighbor, or momentarily to open the house doors
to a repair man. Most humans are eager for greater depth in their daily communication with people and this is possible to be restored to the extent that one recognizes the significance of hospitality, whereby they can meaningfully connect for occasional, or even regular, exchanges on issues of greater meaning and depth. Although sometimes the initiative can come from another, unto whom you graciously respond, you also need to learn how to approach people and see if gradually a meaningful acquaintance can be established. Persons need whatever you provide,
www.bocaratontribune.com
as you also may lack what another can offer, in terms of friendly interactions. While it is true that much hospitality occurs within a home which invites others in, it can be just as effective when the only doors open are those of your heart, wherever you may be, in welcoming what others have to say and in joyfully responding with what you are capable of offering. Every single day we are surrounded by such opportunities, and its true beneficiaries are those who cautiously, but also decisively, take rightful advantage of them. The benefits are mutual, and often enormous!

Mayor Robert Weinroth Provides a County Commission Update PALM BEACH COUNTY GOES TO TALLAHASSEE With the official start of the Florida Legislative Session, Team Palm Beach County was in the house and the senate! The county was fully represented, including all seven county commissioners. It was a whirlwind of meetings with many state leadership members to discuss the needs important to our county and its residents. On our agenda were a number of proprietary issues such as affordable housing, food resources, water quality/ storage and transportation. Additionally, we continued to advocate for home rule since the state has preempted local governments from regulating local issues such as vacation rentals, tree trimming regulations and pet sales. As always, we are grateful to our state partners for their time and effort. Session will continue through March 11, and a full complement of the county’s lobbyists will remain in Tallahassee to monitor bills and appropriations important to our residents. BU S I N E S S D E V E L O P M E N T BOARD of PALM BEACH COUNTY It’s been a successful year for economic development with a a recordbreaking number of new companies and families moving to the area. We were the #1 county in Florida for growth in 2021, and 2022 looks even better! As mayor of Palm Beach County, I have the opportunity to serve on the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County (BDB) Executive Committee. The BDB is the county’s official economic development organization that attracts and retains business investment through corporate relocations, expansions and international trade. The efforts have a lasting and sustainable impact on our county. This past year, the BDB facilitated 31 corporate relocations and expansions that created 3,028 high-salary jobs and $150 million in capital investment. At the same time, visitors continue to flock to the area in record numbers fueling our local hotels, small businesses and restaurants. This is extremely important to our economy and the residents who work in the tourism industry. NEW AREA CODE COMING TO
PALM BEACH COUNTY Palm Beach County was recently assigned 728 as a new area code (in addition to 561). The new area code will be an “overlay” for the county. Anticipating that phone numbers starting with 561 will run out by 2023, the new number was assigned by the Florida Public Service Commission. It will serve the same geographic boundaries as the 561 area code and will be assigned to new telephone numbers and/or additional lines. All existing 561 numbers will not be affected. For more information, click here. PALM BEACH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT WELCOMES ITS 13th AIRLINE Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is pleased to welcome Breeze Airways with service starting on February 19. HISTORIC JOHN F KENNEDY BUNKER With the recent approval of a 30-year lease agreement with the Port of Palm Beach for $10 a year, the county will be restoring and managing an area on Peanut Island that includes President John F. Kennedy’s Cold War-era Bunker. The 1,800-square-foot Bunker was built in 1961 as a top-secret nuclear bomb shelter for President Kennedy during visits to his family’s estate in Palm Beach. Once completed, the public will have access to low-impact, educational and historic attractions including tours of the Kennedy bunker and the former Coast Guard station and boathouse built in 1936. WINTER POLO SEASON AND EQUESTRIAN SEASON Polo is one of Palm Beach County’s favorite pastimes that dates back to the 1970s. The IPC hosts many of the greatest highgoal teams and tournaments in the world.
Serving A Vendor With A Helpful Rebuke Have you ever thought about the importance of constructive criticism, or a timely rebuke? Several years ago, a printer we had been using for some time delivered a project to my office that was intended to represent our organization visually to thousands of people. Upon reviewing the work, however, the colors failed to match what we had requested. They were not even close to our instructions. My tendency is to lean toward being a people-pleaser, so I struggled concerning what I should to do. “I don’t want to sound like a complainer,” I reasoned. “Maybe the colors are not that far off, and we can overlook the fact they are not an exact match.” My assistant at the time, however, did not share my struggle with being unwilling to hurt someone’s feelings. She knew what needed to be done. “We can’t send this out looking like this,” she asserted. “They will have to do the job again.” My assistant was right, of course. We had painstakingly chosen the colors for representing our organization and had accurately specified what we needed. And we were not doing the printer any favors by accepting substandard work. Rather than being concerned about offending the printing company, it was important for them to know when their services were not meeting expectations. Otherwise, how could they realize the need for taking corrective measures to ensure the quality of future work? Rather than taking offense, the printer appreciated being informed of the error and was quick to respond. The next day we received our project - it had been redone,

looking much better. I was glad my assistant had the determination to hold the company, and me, accountable. Looking back on this situation, I realize I had forgotten some important biblical principles that apply to the value of providing correction when needed, whether for a vendor, an employee or even a customer: The gift of a rebuke. Telling someone, whether a fellow staff member, friend or supplier, that their work is not acceptable can be an act of kindness if done in the right spirit, intended not to demean but to help them in doing better in the future. “Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear” (Proverbs 25:12). The obligation of a rebuke. If you find someone performing substandard work and fail to bring it to their attention, in effect you are participating in, even condoning their failure. “Do not hate a fellow Israelite in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly so you will not share in their guilt” (Leviticus 19:17). The benefit of a rebuke. Many times it may seem hard to offer words of correction and rebuke, but if these help the individuals become more effective and productive in their work, the end result might be gratitude for our willingness to provide the constructive criticism. “He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue”(Proverbs 28:23). Rebuking a vendor in love - caring enough about that person, or company, to make them aware of falling short of your expectations - can result in affirming your own commitment to excellence, as well as theirs.

Fun Ways to Introduce Physics to Kids (StatePoint) When many of us think of physics, we think of high-level science courses taught in high school and college. The truth is that not only can you teach your child the basic principles of this branch of science at a young age, but doing so can help them understand the world around them, while laying the groundwork for a continued interest in STEAM learning. At Home There are many ways to demonstrate basic principles of physics using household objects. However, toys designed for this purpose can be good launching pad for your quest for knowledge. The new line of marble playsets from VTech, Marble Rush, allows kids to build thrilling marble courses, send marbles into motion and compete in exciting challenges with lights and sounds. Added bonus? You’ll be introducing engineering principles at the same time! Each Marble Rush set contains color-coded blocks and easyto-follow building instructions for kids to create a variety of beginner to advanced courses, or create their own course with
endless possibilities. The Marble Rush Ultimate Set and Marble Rush Launchpad Set can also be combined to create an extreme playset. Plus, the Marble Rush playsets have received the Toy Association’s STEAM Toy Accreditation seal of approval, meeting experts’ criteria for a good STEAM toy. Families can find course design instructions, along with super cool challenges that demonstrate specific physics concepts like force and friction, on the VTech website. marblerush. On-the-Go Physics truly is all around us, which means there are always opportunities to introduce concepts while on-the-go. Here are a few ideas to get you started: • At a sporting event: Talk about how the ball flies through the air because of the force the athlete applied to it. Discuss how gravity is at the same time, pulling the ball down toward Earth, and how friction from the air around the ball applies a force that
slows it down. • In the car: The car is the perfect place to demonstrate the Doppler Effect and learn about sound. The next time you drive past music, a car alarm or other source of noise, ask your child to observe the way that it sounds as you get closer to it and then how it sounds as you move away from it again. Explain that the noise itself hasn’t changed, but your perception of it has because sound waves are moving differently from the point of view of the observer -- you. • On a walk: Brr…it’s cold outside! The next time you’re on a walk, talk about how even the seasons can be explained by physics. The part of Earth where you live is tilted away from the sun right now, which means that sunlight is more indirect. This is also why the days are shorter this time of year! It’s never too early to bring science to life for kids. There are not only real-world examples of physics at play to discover, but new toys can make learning about these concepts a fun, exciting adventure.
Gear Up for the Spring Semester With These Educational Tools (StatePoint) The spring semester represents the academic home stretch, that time of the school year when students can see the finish line. But that doesn’t mean they should coast their way to the end of the year. Be sure that they’re properly equipped to put in their best effort. Fresh School Supplies It helps to give the start of the spring semester the same importance in your mind as the start of the school year. After all, new supplies can motivate students to get serious about their coursework. To that end, consider doing a full inventory of pens, pencils, notebooks and more, and then updating and replacing items as needed. Perfect Note-Taking Note-taking can quickly become tedious or disorganized without a proper strategy. The good news is that now students have technical solutions at their disposal, some of which are free, to eliminate such concerns. For example, OneNote by Microsoft, allows students to take notes in a number of formats, include typing, stylus and even with audio. They can then access those notes across their devices. Plus, sharing and collaboration features can help out when students are assigned group projects. Master Math Though most students are back in the classroom, online resources are still as essential as ever for homework, studying and research. Place of Hope Applauds Florida Attorney General Moody for New Human Trafficking Prevention Initiative This month, Place of Hope, one of the largest and most diverse children and families organizations in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, celebrated Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody’s announcement unveiling a new human trafficking prevention initiative called The 100 Percent Club. The announcement is timely as January marks Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Place of Hope has made the issue of trafficking a priority since 2012 and has been working diligently to bring services to survivors and education tools to the community. Place of Hope appreciated the leadership shown by AG Moody, Lieutenant Governor Nunez, Representative Overdorf, and many others present at the press conference to take a unified zero tolerance stance for trafficking in the state of Florida. The 100 Percent Club, as explained by AG Moody, is aimed at training one hundred percent of a business’s employees on identifying the signs of trafficking and what actions to take. While Florida ranks third in the nation for calls to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, AG Moody noted how far the state has come and the efforts of mobilizing task forces to streamline work with law enforcement and federal partners. Boca Raton Becomes First Senior Living Community in U.S. to Introduce Exergaming or “MultiBall” – A New Fitness Concept Toby & Leon Cooperman Sinai Residences, a continuing care community in Boca Raton, has introduced an innovative fitness concept to its senior residents called MultiBall, or known by residents as “wall ball.” The new fitness concept, also called exergaming, is a sports and gaming platform that combines physical activity and digital games. According to company representatives in Germany where the product was created, Sinai Residences is the first senior living community in the U.S. to offer MultiBall. Rachel Blumberg, Executive Director of Sinai Residences, says the new exergames are helping many of her community’s residents embrace active lifestyles, which has become more challenging in the pandemic era. “Instead of sitting and playing a board game, MutliBall offers our residents a fun and easy way to move around, bend over and stand up. They are having a blast and absolutely loving this new innovative way of exercising safely during the pandemic.” Studies show that exergaming is not just good for you physically but could potentially boost brain health, especially in older adults with dementia. In fact, another study found that exergame training improved lower extremity and cognitive functioning, step reaction time, and symptoms of depression in this group.

Studies show that exergaming is not just good for you physically but could potentially boost brain health, especially in older adults with dementia. Blumberg brought the concept to Sinai Residences after searching for an option that would allow residents to participate in fun and interactive physical fitness while still taking COVID precautions. An extra plus: residents can participate in MultiBall regardless of the weather outside. Here’s how MultiBall works: The residents stand in front of a screen where they can interact directly with the software.
Some games involve balls. Others, such as “Ghosting,” track walking distance and help with balance, agility and directional changes. Interactive components help with cognitive skill development and precision training. Fitness workouts teach body balance and coordination. alone, with a friend (while safely wearing a mask) or even a grandchild. For Blumberg, who has had to cancel many fitness activities over the last two years because of Covid precautions, MultiBall is a lifesaver. “It’s innovative, fun and incorporates both fitness and cognitive interaction, yet it is safe during the pandemic,” she adds. “The best part is anyone can participate regardless of physical limitations. I truly believe this can benefit seniors everywhere.”

Alpert JFS and Rales JFS Fund Essential Services for Holocaust Survivors in Palm Beach County with Annual Grant from German Government and Community Support Ferd & Gladys Alpert Jewish Family Service (Alpert JFS) in West Palm Beach and Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (Rales JFS) in Boca Raton announced today that the organizations will jointly receive $16.4 million from the Claims Conference. Also known as the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, the organization represents the world’s Jews in negotiating for compensation and restitution for victims of Nazi persecution and their heirs. This is the 27th year that Alpert JFS and Rales JFS have received funds from the Claims Conference. The monies are allocated on January 20th each year, just one week before International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, which commemorates the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism. Alpert JFS and Rales JFS are the only organizations in the local area that the Claims Conference designates for this crucial level of financial support. “As it does each year, the world will turn its attention to International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th, with formal ceremonies at the United Nations and Auschwitz,” said Marc Hopin, Chief Executive Officer of Alpert JFS. “Holocaust survivors who are our friends and neighbors deserve to live their last remaining years in dignity with the financial support they need to age in place. It is our communal responsibility to ensure their comfort and care until end of life and to

carry on their memories forever.” “We have been fortunate to receive more money from the Claims Conference each year as the unmet needs of the survivors continue to grow,” said Danielle Hartman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Rales JFS. “Even though many survivors have passed away, there are still many survivors in our community who have increased needs as they age.” The bulk of the funds are to pay for inhome care and help with activities of daily living for Holocaust survivors, such as bathing, toileting and meal preparation. A portion of the funds also pay for care management staff who coordinate care for each survivor, emergency financial assistance, counseling, as well as socialization events. “As a Holocaust survivor, Alpert Jewish Family Service has become my extended family,” says Alpert JFS client Evelyn Grapek. “Their services provide me with a lifeline of essential support that I could not get anywhere else.” The Claims Conference requires a community match of $750K that Alpert and Rales JFS must raise locally to receive these funds. Alpert JFS and Rales JFS together provide programs and services to approximately 26,000 seniors, adults, children, and persons with disabilities, including over 1,000 Holocaust survivors. FAU Online Programs Move Up In “U.S. News & World Report” Ranking Florida Atlantic University’s online master’s in nursing programs are ranked No. 20 in the nation for 2022 by U.S. News & World Report, rising from No. 32 in 2021. In addition, FAU’s online master’s in educational administration and supervision is ranked No. 13 in the nation this year, climbing from No. 19 in last year’s rankings. FAU’s online master’s business programs (non-MBA) also rose to No. 41 in this year’s rankings, up from No. 45 in 2021. For the College of Nursing dean, being ranked in the top 20 is especially meaningful given the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. “The recognition of the online master’s in nursing programs we received speaks to the quality of the college’s programs and the dedication of our faculty and staff,” said Safiya George, Ph.D., dean of FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. “We pride ourselves on educating the next generation of exceptional health care providers that can help our nation in its continued struggle with the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.” U.S. News also ranked two offerings at FAU at No. 21 this year – the online master’s in business programs for veterans (non-MBA)

Now in its 11th year, the U.S. News & World Report “Best Online Programs” list is a resource for students and working adults who are increasingly seeking online education programs for degree completion and career advancement. Prospective students can use the searchable directory to explore factors such as tuition, program offerings and online services offered to enrolled students. Florida Blue Advances Commitment to Equity with First Chief Health Equity Officer Florida Blue’s parent company, GuideWell Mutual Holding Corporation (GuideWell) today announced the appointment of Dr. Kelli Tice as the enterprise’s first ever Chief Health Equity Officer. GuideWell created the position to advance health equity and address long-standing social, health and racial inequities in the communities it serves. The announcement of this newly created position is part of Florida Blue and GuideWell’s overall commitment to improve health equity for its employees, members, customers and communities. “Today’s announcement marks another step forward in our pledge to embed diversity, equity and inclusion in everything we do,” said Pat Geraghty, president and CEO of Florida Blue and GuideWell. “Dr. Tice brings an unparalleled level of dedication, passion and expertise in reducing health disparities, delivering culturally competent care and advancing our mission by improving health outcomes for people and communities.” As Chief Health Equity Officer, Dr. Tice will serve as an officer of the company and will be responsible for creating solutions that improve health outcomes and address health inequities for the customers and the communities Florida Blue and GuideWell serves. In addition, Dr. Tice will continue to have a critical role on the Eq-

uity Alliance, an enterprise-wide initiative focused on addressing systemic racism and health disparities for Black Americans. “As a family physician with a background in public health, I have always
championed efforts to remove barriers to care and help people thrive and achieve their best health,” said Dr. Tice. “Every American deserves affordable, high-quality care and I am fortunate to lead this strategy for a mission-driven organization that is taking a leading role in improving health care equity and diversity.” In 2018 Dr. Tice joined GuideWell and Florida Blue, the state’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield plan, as Senior Medical Director of
Medical Affairs. Dr. Tice served as the clinical lead for Florida Blue’s COVID-19 response, using her background in public health and her powerful voice to educate employees, members and the community about the latest medical science regarding testing, treatment, prevention and vaccines. Through online videos and educational events, Dr. Tice makes it her mission to educate others so they can feel empowered to make informed decisions for themselves, their companies and their families. In addition to her focused work around COVID-19, Dr. Tice has also led the company’s health equity strategy, led the social determinants of health (SDoH) strategy and helped drive efforts for the Equity Alliance. Under her leadership, Dr. Tice was instrumental in the development of a health equity dashboard that provides greater insight into social determinants of health and other barriers to care that impact members. She also led GuideWell’s efforts to join with 40 cross-sector health organizations in committing to a Health Equity pledge to leverage data to address health disparities. Before joining Florida Blue, Dr. Tice spent 17 years as a public health physician, serving in numerous leadership roles including that of county health officer and state medical director for the Florida De-

partment of Health. Dr. Tice has always had an interest in addressing health disparities and delivering culturally competent care. Early in her career, she taught cultural competency for physicians, and incorporated evidencebased techniques to promote health equity
“Today’s announcement marks another step forward in our pledge to embed diversity, equity and inclusion in everything we do,” said Pat Geraghty into primary care practice in both private and public clinical settings. Dr. Tice is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Florida Academy of Family Physicians, and currently serves as the chair of the Deans Council, Brooks College of Health at the University of North Florida.

Panthers Explode for 112 Points Palm Beach State Women’s Basketball needed a win in a big way and they certainly earned one in a dominating offensive performance over Miami Prep. This 112 points Palm Beach scored on Saturday is the most the team has scored since the 2019-2020 season when the Panthers scored 95 against ASA College (Miami). In what was a tale of two halves, the Panthers dominated the 3rd and 4th quarters outscoring opposing Miami Prep 6525. Andrea Torres alone outscored Miami Prep in the 2nd half 26-25. Speaking of Torres, Andrea Torres had an afternoon to remember as she scored
a career-high 51(!) points. She shot 22-33 from the field, including 4-8 from beyond the arc. Jaylen Ponder was quite the statistical darling in this one. Ponder earned a tripledouble. She posted 18 points, 12 assists, and 14 rebounds, to go along with 7 steals. Rayna Duzant finished with 17 total points while Rebecca Scott posted a careerhigh 12 points. We’d also like to give a shout out to Keyona Miller who also posted a career-high with 9 points. The Panthers have some time off as their next game is a rematch with Miami Prep next Saturday at 2:00. For now, the Panthers will enjoy a well deserved victory.
