Community Local Business Halts Services to Make Masks for the Community By Christina Hristoforidis The Florida Department of Health recently implemented Emergency Order 20-03 that states, every person working, living, visiting, or doing business in the City of Boca Raton is encouraged to wear a cloth facial covering consistent with the current CDC guidelines while in any public place. The influx of COVID-19 cases in Palm Beach County has left many in the community scrambling for protective face masks. To assist in providing masks for the community, a local business has halted their regular activities to make masks for the community. Peterson’s Laboratory, located in Delray Beach, works as a Dental laboratory providing medical appliances to dentists for things like crowns, bridges, and dentures. As a result of the current COVID-19 quarantine, Peterson’s laboratory nearly slowed down to a halt while leaving them wondering what they can do to help. Their six 3D printers previously used to create dental impressions, have now been repurposed into printing masks for medical professionals and members of the community. “We have been running about 24 hours a day making masks”, states Chris Peterson, owner of Peterson’s Laboratory. Chris Peterson was motivated to create masks for a couple of reasons, “one is that people need masks and the other is to keep some of our staff employed and keep the lights on in the facility.” For many local businesses, it is important to maintain some normalcy during these trying times and give employees a way to still claim a paycheck at the end of the day. “Businesses have got to be open when this is all over so surely we can kill a couple birds with one stone…help some people while

also keeping some staff employed.” Horror stories of medical professionals running out of masks have recently surfaced in states with overwhelming cases of COVID-19. Medical professionals maintaining anonymity, outline their experiences during a shift at a NYC hospital centered around being forced to reuse single-use masks due to recent shortage. Although COVID-19 cases have not yet hit Florida as hard as New York, it is very likely that we could continue seeing the number of confirmed cases in Florida rise throughout the next couple of weeks. Although there are so many medical professionals in need of masks, Peterson’s may not be able to directly equip hospitals with masks due to the specified N95 mask model required. Peterson’s Laboratory is an FDA certified facility for producing medical devices, not N95 masks. “At the end of the day, right now we cannot produce a certified mask to send to hospitals due to the requirement of N95 certified masks. However, we do use comparable materials to an N95 mask.” Peterson’s is still doing everything they can to provide masks to medical professionals that reach out, “We do have a lot of nurses that really need masks and are asking for them directly, so we are donating what we can to them.” Peterson’s goal is to provide the community with proper protection against the virus. Some of the masks produced are gifted, while others can be purchased on their Etsy page. The masks produced by Peterson’s Laboratory can be found on their Facebook page “Peterson’s Printing” where you can find Etsy links on where the masks can be purchased.

Thousands of Meals for Underserved at Delray’s Achievement Centers During Pandemic The Achievement Centers for Children and Families (ACCF), established in 1969 and serves 900 local children and families annually from three locations in Delray Beach, reports overwhelming response to its meal program that launched on March 23. Thus far, they have been able to provide 3500 meals, including 1100 dinners, 900 lunches & 1500 breakfasts and, last Friday, were able to provide two rolls of toilet paper to each family. Dinners have been provided by Delray’s 3rd and 3rd and its Chef Emerson Frisbee, along with Bill Caesar of Caesar’s Famous Ribs Catering. Breakfasts are being provided by a private donor with lunches provided by FLIPANY. The food is being distributed via drive-through pick ups to the families who participate in the Achievement Centers’ Family Strengthening Program at all sites, the Nancy K. Hurd Campus, the Morton Downey Family Resource Center Campus, Pine Grove Elementary School and Village Academy. The meal distribution fills in the gap and helps feed parents as well as families with kids over 18 who are not served by the school district meal program. And for Easter, Kilwins Chocolate of Delray Beach donated over 250 chocolate bunnies for the kids. “We were happy to be able to

donate! These are very trying times. We need to do whatever we can to bring a little sunshine to whoever we can,” Kilwin’s owner Allison Whitworth said. In addition to meal distributions, the Achievement Centers is also offering other services including: • Family services –With a high percentage of Achievement Center families speaking Creole at home, the organization has worked to translate essential information, as well as offer guidance on finances during this time. • Grocery bags. Grocery bags donated through community support with food and essentials are being provided to families who currently participate in ACCF’s programs and are critically in need. • Virtual story time. ACCF teachers and volunteers are reading curriculum-based books to kids each day during virtual story time. Each week the sessions will include different “readers” and books. “The demand for our services is greater than ever and have launched new initiatives to keep up with these needs, while pulling together as a community,” said Stephanie Seibel, Chief Executive Officer for ACCF. “Our partners and supporters have been instrumental in our efforts to serve meals for over 200 families each week, all while supporting local restaurants and their employees.” The organization has set up a COVID-19 Emergency Fund and is seeking donations from the community.

Stay Home This Sunday, God can Hear you From There The marquis at the church on Military Trail in Boynton Beach read “Jesus rode into Jerusalem on an ass. Keep yours home.” While the language may be somewhat unorthodox coming from a church, perhaps, just maybe, that is the only way to get some people to understand the meaning of “practice social distancing” during this coronavirus pandemic. For the last three weeks medical experts and our elected leaders have been warning us to avoid public gatherings, and if we have to be out, keep six feet away from others in hopes of keeping us safe and healthy. Still, we are seeing and hearing the stories of those religious leaders who continue to defy these orders. As the world goes darker, we know the light shines brighter and we need God more now than ever. No one is saying stop worship, just simply, do not congregate. Last weekend, we observed Easter and Passover. The religious services historically are a magnet for worshippers in many churches and synagogues, and just the thought of an outbreak makes me nervous. Reverends, pastors, ministers, rabbis and other faith leaders, a key element of your religion is to obey the law and care for

others. You can send a clear and powerful message about your faith and values by respecting the social distance order, therefore protecting each other — and the public at large — from sickness or death. Several members of the clergy have vowed to hold public services, regardless of the consequences. One congregation in San Diego, California, has asked a federal judge to allow them to meet on Easter Sunday in their vehicles despite the County’s stay at home order. Parishioners maintain that the order violates the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment because it places more stringent restrictions on the church than those placed on secular businesses. Yes, it is a thin line between religion and state. However, when does common sense prevail? Just like holy water is not a hand sanitizer, prayer is not a vaccine. As many of you know, I am not a fan of government intrusion. However, we are in a unique situation and it is the government’s responsibility to make sure that all people are safe Most houses of worships are demonstrating the kind of leadership we need, they are embracing technology despite the frustrating limitations, and are offering their

members the opportunity to worship virtually. As I pen this column, I am watching an internationally-known pastor deliver his message to an empty sanctuary. Guess what, the impact of his message was not altered and him being virtual, allowed the gospel to reach many across the world. Other pastors have given new meaning to the term, “Necessity is the mother of inventions,” by taking creative measures such as requiring congregants to wear protective gear including hazmat suits when coming to church or offering drivethru benedictions. Still, there are some who, hide under the cloak of the First Amendment, arguing that a church should have reasonable accommodations to serve God according to their conscience. Say what? Their motives are mixed – some, it is greed, some are misguided and others are simply wacked. One local pastor, after holding services online two Sundays ago, complained that he did not make enough money from the offering. So, instead of bolstering digital tithes and offering from his parishioners, they went back to meeting this past Sunday. Another pastor held drive-in

services where attendees stayed in their cars and listened as they would at a drive-in movie theatre. While tha is creative and a bit safer, it is still risky. This is a pandemic and people are fearful and looking to their faith leaders for guidance. If you continue to flounce orders for selfish reasons, where is your sense of responsibility? Is that sound leadership and good judgment? Your parishioners may not succumb to the illness but they could pass the virus along to others. Your selfish actions could literally kill people pastor. Some have even suggested that people should stay in their lanes, as one Orlando pastor told critics, “Mind your own business.” What he and all the other recalcitrant faith leaders fail to realize is that ensuring the health and safety of those among us in this pandemic is the responsibility of everyone. It is everyone’s business pastor. I know for many, the house of worship is an oasis of calm and comfort during this period when our world is in chaos. Come on people, let common sense prevail please!

POSITIVE LIVING By Robert J. Tamasy

Making Your Mark Through Mentoring, Part 1 “I want to make a difference.” Have you ever made this statement? It is a thought many of us have expressed, whether in public or at least to ourselves. Whether you are a Baby Boom generation member on the back end of your career, or a Millennial just getting a start in the workplace, this is a desire many of us share. The question is, how do we make that difference? How can we succeed in making a mark that will endure long after our working days have ended? There are many possible suggestions, but there is one I would highly recommend: Mentoring. I know, you might have an objection, saying something like, “I had a mentor once – a terrible experience!” That is not the kind of mentoring I’m talking about. Many of us have had a bad experience in which a mentor was assigned to us, had no genuine interest in us,

April 17 - April 23, 2020

and viewed being a mentor as an imposed assignment. No, the kind of mentoring I mean involves a mutually beneficial relationship, two people on a journey together seeking to grow and build into one another’s lives. When David A. Stoddard and I co-authored The Heart of Mentoring: Ten Proven Principles for Developing People to Their Fullest Potential, we were drawing from Dave’s experience of having two wonderful mentors who invested much of themselves into him, listening and teaching and modeling what it meant to be successful in business – and in life. Dave went on to replicate that mentoring process in the lives of dozens of other men for more than 30 years. He passed away five years ago this month, but his impact – the mark he made through mentoring others – continues to this day

through many of those individuals. What does that kind of mentoring look like? Here are a few of the principles we cited in our book, along with biblical precepts that undergird those principles: Living is about giving. Too often, mentoring is viewed through a “what’s in it for me” lens. The most effective mentoring is done focused on the best interests of the person being mentored, whom we termed the “mentoring partner.” We want to help him or her become all they can possibly be. “…remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (Acts 20:35). Mentoring is a process that requires perseverance. Spending time with someone who needs our help at times can be frustrating or discouraging, especially when we fail to see the progress we had hoped for. That is why perseverance is

www.bocaratontribune.com

necessary, pressing on and remaining committed to the mentor even when expectations are not met.“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”(Galatians 6:9). Effective mentors open their world to their mentoring partners. Nothing builds trust more than being transparent, even totally vulnerable, to the other person. As we are open to others, honest with our own struggles, that gives them confidence to become open with us. “We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well” (1 Thessalonians 2:8). I will take a look at some of the other principles from The Heart of Mentoring next week!

Over the years, I have spoken to many businesspeople who mistakenly believe they must leave the marketplace and become missionaries or pastors to do work that would please God. The Bible, however, tells a different story. In an interesting individual named Bezalel, we find an excellent illustration of how God views the intersection of vocation and faith. He is introduced in Exodus 35:30, where we read, “Then Moses said to the Israelites, ‘See, the Lord has chosen Bezalel …, and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills.’” Bezalel was the first person in the Scriptures to be described as being filled with the Spirit of God. Interestingly, he was not a priest or a prophet. He held no official “religious” role. Instead, he was a craftsman. But God was not calling Bezalel to serve on his own. The Lord knew the work He was calling him to accomplish inside the tabernacle, furnishings that would be dedicated to the worship of God, was going to require more people. Someone able to teach others was needed – Bezalel was appointed to lead the way. “And He has given both Bezalel and Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others” (Exodus 35:34). As we read more about Bezalel, we discover he was not only a craftsman and a teacher, but also a generalist. He was skilled in many different crafts, while others were called to specific tasks, such as being engravers or designers. “God has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers” (Exodus 35:35). Being a generalist gave Bezalel the capability for being a good teacher for the specialists.

God had given Moses, the leader of the Israelites, intricate designs for how He wanted His tabernacle created. As Bezalel co-labored with God, he and others working with him produced excellent results. The outcome was a tabernacle that not only met God’s specifications, but also displayed His vision. The excellence of Bezalel’s craftsmanship moved the people’s hearts to extreme generosity. We read in Exodus 36:6 that Moses said, “’No man or woman is to make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.’ And so, the people were restrained from bringing more, because what they already had was more than enough to do all the work.” Imagine leading an important initiative that inspires such enthusiastic support that you have to say, “Stop! We do not need any more. We have more than enough!” This example of Bezalel is from thousands of years ago, but it clearly shows how God desires for us to partner with Him in His work, whether in constructing a building, growing a business, pioneering a new product or service, or any other project you could conceive. We don’t have to become missionaries or pastors to do so. Consider: God called Bezalel to be a craftsman, giving him the ability to do it very well. God has a vocational calling for you – as is true for every one of His followers. If God has blessed you with excellent skills, He might also give you the ability to teach those skills to others. I would encourage you to pray and ask God if He is calling you to teach as well as to do. Considering your past experiences and skills, are you a generalist or a specialist? To best allocate your time, it helps to know. By combining God’s design and your excellent work, you might be amazed at the generous response from others!

USDA Approves Florida’s Request to Launch Online Grocery Purchase Pilot Program The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) announced Florida will pilot a program for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to purchase groceries online with the use of an EBT card. SNAP participants are automatically eligible to participate in this program and do not need to apply. “Removing barriers and enhancing access to critical services, while supporting Florida’s infrastructure, remains a top priority for this agency, ” said DCF Secretary Chad Poppell. “I commend Governor DeSantis for taking yet another proactive action to equip Florida families with resources, while keeping their health and safety at the forefront. This is an innovative, common sense efficiency that will strengthen our families during this time of uncertainty.” This partnership with federal, state, and local partners will ensure Floridians can access nutritious food while also practicing social distancing and self-quarantining to reduce the spread of COVID-19. The pilot program in Florida will begin with an initial launch on April 16, 2020. “Fidelity Information Systems (FIS) commends Florida for responding to its customer’s needs in a quick and efficient manner,” said Florida’s EBT vendor FIS, Jim Johnson, EVP of Payments and Wealth. “We have been working diligently with the state to ensure our customers have consistent and timely access to their benefits during this pivotal time and look forward to the successful implementation of this pilot.” Walmart will initially launch a pilot at all five Tallahassee locations on April 16. On April 21, both Walmart and Amazon online purchasing will be available statewide. DCF will continue to coordinate with the USDA and the Florida Retail Federation to expand the

network of retailers participating in the pilot program. “Customers rely on us to help put food on their tables and our Pickup and Delivery options are playing a more important role than ever in helping them do that,” said Beverly Cole, Senior Director, Payment Acceptance with Walmart. “Making these services available to more and more customers, no matter how they pay is a critical step in the right direction. More than 250 of our stores in Florida have pickup options and we’ll be ready to serve customers using SNAP no matter how they shop with us.” “Amazon remains committed to making food accessible through online shopping, offering all customers access to low prices, selection, and convenience,” said Kristina Herrmann, Director of Underserved Populations at Amazon. “This is especially important as millions of Americans are being encouraged to stay at home. We continue to work closely with state officials and the USDA as the SNAP Online Purchasing Pilot grows to expand our capabilities in supporting under-served customers.” “This program comes at a critical time as Florida encourages preventative measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19,” said Florida Retail Federation Vice President and General Counsel Lorena Holley. “The Florida Retail Federation appreciates DCF’s commitment to utilizing technology and removing bureaucracy to ensure Florida businesses can provide the services needed to Florida families.” Walmart already accepts SNAP benefits at all its brick and mortar locations in the United States. Customers will be able to use their EBT cards and opt for curbside pick-up. Utilization of food assistance benefits remains limited to the purchasing of eligible grocery items and cannot be used to pay for delivery services.

Upcoming Virtual Career Expo to Support Local South Florida Tech Community Both Palm Beach and Broward Counties have held lower unemployment rates than the national average in recent years, but with the COVID-19 impact, this is of little current significance, especially with the prospect of record unemployment looming over the region. Although there are hundreds of companies proceeding with layoffs and hiring freezes, there are still companies who are hiring. This is even more so within technology-driven organizations. Companies and local organizations who are canceling their career fairs during this outbreak are affecting our community more than we think. Anyone who has been financially affected by the uncertainty of this global pandemic can agree that we are all depending on our community in this time of crisis more than ever. The Career Expo, originally scheduled to take place at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus in Boca Raton, in addition to a virtual aspect, is now completely virtual. Palm Beach Tech is partnering with Premier Virtual, a multi-functional software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform, will aid in connecting local tech talent who are meeting challenges brought on by COVID-19 with the companies who are still hiring. The Virtual Career Expo will bridge the gap with technology and human interactions by allowing job seeking candidates to log in, research, apply, and speak with live recruiters all in one location. Steve Edwards, CEO of Premier Virtual, states that “Virtual career expos are a necessity

right now as there are hundreds of companies out there who are still hiring. Companies will realize that virtual hiring events save time and money in the future.” “Though we are no longer able to host the Career Expo at BRiC as we originally attended, we felt it was even more vital to partner with Palm Beach Tech given these new circumstances to help great companies find great talent,” said Giana Pacinelli, Marketing Director for Crocker Partners, owner and operator of BRiC. “We are proud that several of our valued tenants at BRiC will be participating in the expo and that we have the opportunity to support our community during this time.” qPartnering organization, CareerSource Palm Beach County’s Assistant Vice President, Michael Corbit, states that “CareerSource has been extremely busy assisting job seekers with questions and connecting them to resources during this difficult time. We are extremely excited to be partnering with Palm Beach Tech for a virtual career fair to help local job seekers connect and bring added value to our community during this time.” You can visit www.palmbeachtech. org to learn more about Palm Beach Tech Association and the upcoming VIRTUAL Career Expo on Wednesday, April 22nd, 2020! For any companies interested in getting involved, please reach out to Palm Beach Tech’s VP of Development, Nikki Cabus at nikki@palmbeachtech.org

Local teenagers create hand sanitizer business to help others amidst COVID-19 pandemic

By Justin Baronoff

Since the coronavirus pandemic has prompted students, regardless of grade and location, to switch from learning in the classroom to learning remotely online, in-person interaction has disappeared, leaving parents to wonder how they can keep their children busy and entertained. Whether it’s watching TV and movies, playing video games and board games, or doing any other inside activities, boredom has been difficult to deal with. However, for Saint Andrew’s School juniors Nicholas Horowitz and Matthew Russo they have managed to keep busy better than most high schoolers or adults, for that matter, could have imagined: creating a business. This business that Horowitz, 17, and Russo, 16, have established isn’t just an ordinary lemonade stand or bake sale, but rather selling bottles of hand sanitizer in a time where cleanliness is of the utmost importance. Due to most grocery and pharmaceutical stores across the United States having scarce supply of hand sanitizer and even e-commerce platforms, such as eBay, having to ban hand sanitizer sales to stop price gouging, the two high school boys decided the best way to give back to the Boca Raton community was creating and selling hand sanitizer of their own. “[A couple weeks ago] my mom was waiting on a line out the door at Costco on Congress Avenue for a truck that may or may not have had hand sanitizer,” Russo said. “When she told me it was a waste of time and that she couldn’t get hand sanitizer, I told my friend Nick and he had the same experience, so we said why don’t we make our own hand sanitizer.” As the boys have been friends since their freshman year at Saint Andrews, they never liked science as much as they do this year, specifically with chemistry, in which they are currently enrolled in Advanced Placement Chemistry, instructed by teacher Ms. Paula Martin. Through Martin’s suggestions on how to synthesize hand sanitizer, Horowitz and Russo were inspired to create and improve the supply of it immediately, and with Martin’s permission to borrow the necessary laboratory equipment, the two partnered together and got right to work. “We each wanted to do it and we knew the best way to do it was with each other because we both have family members in need of [hand sanitizer],” Horowitz said. “One of the first people we went to was [Ms. Martin] and she said to go for it.” By combining rubbing alcohol, aloe vera gel, and glycerin, Horowitz and Russo were able to create gallons of hand sanitizer and through packaging pur-

chased online and a designed logo, their business, titled “Purificate,” was born. The hand sanitizer is sold in 1.6 ounce bottles and can be used up to 40 times, according to Horowitz. “We had to make a lot of [hand sanitizer] to figure out the percentage of aloe, glycerin, and alcohol we wanted, but as we tested it with our families and friends, we understood what it was like,” Horowitz said. “So far, people have loved it [and] are putting it in Easter baskets and buying it in big amounts.” To ensure social distancing continues in order to reduce further spread of the coronavirus, the boys have been driving and delivering the hand sanitizer to customers all throughout Boca Raton and leaving it at their front doors. As a result, Horowitz and Russo estimate they have received around $1,500 in profit in only three weeks of operating the business. In keeping up with the demand for hand sanitizer, the boys have also partnered with organic food and drink company, Raw Juce, to have their 1.6 ounce bottles sold in their Boca Raton stores. Also, for those that would like larger amounts, according to Russo, they have started to make four ounce containers. “We contacted [Raw Juce] and since they’re not closed down, they said they would be more than happy to take our product and it just happened,” Russo said. With Purificate already profiting, one may think high school boys would keep the money for themselves. Despite this misconception, Horowitz and Ruso each agreed to donate a majority of the profits to charities of their choice, but not until the pandemic slows down, as they keep selling their hand sanitizer daily. Due to volunteering in the Boca Raton community when they were younger, the boys chose charities on a larger scale, in which Horowitz went with the American Red Cross, who provide emergency assistance in times like these, and Russo decided on 211, which also helps to give resources to those in need, such as food and shelter. Even though there is uncertainty of how long Purificate will be able to continue generating profits, Horowitz and Russo have even expressed interest into creating other household disinfectant cleaners too, and while they still have roughly another year before graduating high school and going off to college, they will further learn more about running a business in hopes of being able keep their business going for the foreseeable future. “We thought [Purificate] would be just a tiny business, but it’s grown and we want to continue it,” Horowitz said. “When you have an idea, just go for it, and put that plan into action.”

Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County Receives Generous Donation

The Early Learning Coalition is seeking assistance in helping child care centers serving emergency personnel, and essential workers obtain the necessary supplies they need to stay open safely. During this time of need, The Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County has generously received a donation of $10,000 in highly coveted hand sanitizer from the Medical Group of South Florida. With the recent national shortages on standard operating supplies for child care centers, like hand-sanitizer, diapers, wipes, formula, gloves, and cleaning supplies, the Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County stepped in to help solve this problem. “We heard from several child care center owners and operators,” said Warren Eldridge, CEO, Early Learning Coalition of Palm Beach County. “They wanted to stay open to continue to help the parents working around the clock as nurses, paramedics, and emergency personnel, but the schools were going to close if they couldn’t find the supplies.” The Medical Group of South Florida, known for being a forwardthinking medical practice in Palm Beach County, has really stepped up during

this time of crisis. From the beginning of the pandemic, the Medical Group of South Florida has been proactive by setting up triage screening stations, offering telemedicine, and recently announced having the new rapid COVID-19 tests available at their Jupiter, FL location. The Medical Group of South Florida heard the call for help and jumped to action. Not only did they find the desperately needed hand-sanitizer but also donated $10,000 worth of hand sanitizer for Palm Beach County child care centers. “When we were informed that the child care centers that serve our emergency personnel and essential workers needed hand sanitizer, we felt it was our civic duty to lean in and help out in by obtaining it for them. We all need to stand together as a community to get through this,” said Dr. Joshua Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Medical Group of South Florida. “We are grateful for the Medical Group of South Florida’s kindness and generosity. In a time where we’ve heard stories of panic and hoarding, the Medical Group of South Florida jumped into action by charitably securing 2,000 hand sanitizer bottles. It is going to make a difference to our unsung heroes…child care owners and educators,” said Warren Eldridge.

Boca High Students Launch #Coronacant Boca Raton Community High School students against COVID-19 have started a new movement called #CoronaCant. Leaders include Luke Lynch, an alum of Boca High. The group is being overseen by Boca High teacher, Jordan Hernandez. Student leaders from Boca Raton Community High School have created a public forum via “Google Classroom” to create a safe place and platform for students to be connected to mental health resources, online exercises/yoga, activity challenges and overall a place for students to reach out and connect with one another. “The onset of COVID-19 has affected the entire nation and rocked

each and every one of our worlds. Now more than ever, it is critical that we stay together as a community, as a unified nation and people, to grow at this time,” Luke Lynch said. Students representing service-orientated clubs at Boca High, including We Dine Together, T.R.E.E. Club and ICU, are working together to create the #CORONACANT movement. “The movement is based on the fact that as individuals we still have power over our daily lives and through this, we can use this time of self-quarantine and social isolation to grow and stay connected as a team,” Luke Lynch said.

sports Four Fighting Knights Named to 2020 Division II PING All-Region Team

The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) has announced its 2020 NCAA Division II PING All-Region Teams, headlined by four Lynn University men's golfers in the South Region. Carlos Bustos, Agustin Errazuriz, Toto Gana and Giovanni Manzoni were each named to the All-South Region Team. The Fighting Knights' four honorees are the most of any conference in the South Region. Bustos, a senior from Santiago, Chile, earns All-Region recognition for the second consecutive season. An All-American in 2018-19, Bustos led the Fighting Knights with a 70.47 scoring average in 2019-20. Errazuriz, a sophomore from Santiago, Chile, also earns All-Region accolades for the second year in a row after posting a 71.12 scoring average in

2019-20. Errazuriz was a PING Freshman All-American in 2018-19. Gana concludes his senior campaign with PING All-Region honors for the fourth consecutive season. A threetime All-American, the Santiago, Chile native recorded a 72.65 scoring average in 2019-20. Manzoni, a native of Cremella, Italy, earns All-South Region honors in back-to-back years to cap his sophomore season. Manzoni posted a 71.85 scoring average and led the Fighting Knights with 10 top-10 finishes in 2019-20. The quartet of PING All-Region recipients were each members of Lynn's back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championship teams in 2018 and 2019. PING All-American awards for the 2020 season will be announced later this spring.

FAU Men’s Basketball Rounds Out Class With Nicholas Boyd Florida Atlantic University head men's basketball coach Dusty May has announced the signing of Nicholas Boyd. "We are extremely excited to add Nick Boyd to our recruiting class," said May. "He comes from a great basketball pedigree and excelled at one of the premier prep school programs this past season, Don Bosco Institute. He is a versatile guard that can play on and off the ball while making his teammates better." Boyd, a 6-3 guard from Garnerville, New York, attended Don Bosco Institute last year, where he averaged 15 points and six assists per game for the Dons. Prior to that, Boyd played at St. Mary's in Rutherford, New Jersey, where he set the school record for points in a season on his way to 1,110 career points.

He was a two-time North Jersey Interscholastic Conference (NJIC) First Team selection and was named NJIC Player of the Year as a senior. Boyd completes a signing class that includes Sun-Sentinel 6A-7A Player of the Year Giancarlo Rosado, who averaged 26.7 points and nine rebounds per game at Palm Beach Lakes High School, and Johnell "Nelly" Davis, who was named to the Indiana state All-Star team after averaging 31.4 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.6 steals and 2.6 assists at 21st Century School. "Nick complements Giancarlo and Johnell from both a character and skill level standpoint and we know he will be a great fit for our program," said May.

The Florida Atlantic University women's golf team has added Kacey Walker, a transfer from Eastern Florida State College, to the squad for the 202021 season. Walker arrives at FAU after a storied JUCO career. Over the past two seasons, Walker won two tournaments and had 10 top-10 finishes. That success earned her Arnold Palmer Cup nominations in 2019 and '20. "We are excited to have Kacey join the Owl family," FAU coach Aimee Neff said of Walker, who ranked fourth among all JUCO women's golfers. "She will step in and bring immediate experience after playing the last two years at

Eastern Florida State College. She cemented herself as one of the best players in NJCAA and beyond that, she is mature and eager to compete. With her athletic background and willingness to learn, we believe she will continue to improve. We can't wait to have her join us this fall!" In 2016 the Canadian Junior Golf Association named Walker, a Mississauga, Ontario native, a National Order of Merit winner for her accomplishments as a youth player. Walker is a welcome addition to an FAU team already on the rise. In 201920, the Owls posted their best scoring average (300) in program history and rose to No. 114 in the national rankings.
