The city of Boca Raton has decided to join numerous other cities in South Florida in suing state officials, including Gov. Rick Scott. In 2011, changes to a previous law were made that would result in local government officials being removed from office and fined up to $5,000 if they passed any kind of gun control regulations. Currently, members of the state government are the only ones able to create gun legislation in Florida. Since the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, many South Florida cities have called for some type of additional gun control laws. Story on Page 3

The City Council gave unanimous support to resolution 18-2018, which is a resolution from the City of Boca Raton supporting the establishment of a new public elementary school on city-owned land in the vicinity of Spanish River Boulevard, west of I-95 and east of north Military Trail. • The Unicorn Children’s Foundation will be hosting a training on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 9am to 5pm at the Boca Raton Children’s Museum to increase the availability of high quality respite care providers in Palm Beach and Broward County. Respite provides temporary relief for families from the ongoing responsibility of caring for an individual with special needs.

By: Michael Demyan The city of Boca Raton has decided to join numerous other cities in South Florida in suing state officials, including Gov. Rick Scott. In 2011, changes to a previous law were made that would result in local government officials being removed from office and fined up to $5,000 if they passed any kind of gun control regulations. Currently, members of the state government are the only ones able to create gun legislation in Florida. Since the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, many South Florida cities have called for some type of additional gun control laws, but since local governments cannot actually make those changes, all they can do is lobby the state to do it. The Boca Raton City Council voted 4-1 Tuesday to join the lawsuit, which would remove the penalties, but not remove the law banning cities from passing gun control legislation. The only council member to vote against joining the lawsuit was Jeremy Rodgers, who noted that the move would be costing taxpayers.

“I’d rather take a wait and see approach,” he said. “This is moving forward with or without us and there’s a cost to our taxpayers in going forward with this, so I don’t plan to support this at this time.” That cost to taxpayers will be $10,000 in legal fees. Other council members, however, believe that it is something that should be done regardless, citing that local government should be able to make decisions that they think are best for their community, something that state government is unable to cater to. Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie feels that the state is taking away the power of local governments to best govern their cities. “The state of Florida needs to stop pre-empting local government,” she said. “We are the closest level of government to the people. We are here 24/7 for our residents and it’s important that we have the ability to govern and to regulate.” The lawsuit, which was filed on April 2 by the city of Weston, currently includes cities such as Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Miami Gardens, Miramar, Pompano Beach and Weston.

FAU Named Lewy Body Dementia 'Research Center Of Excellence'

The Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA) named Florida Atlantic University as a LBDA Research Center of Excellence (RCOE), a nationwide collaboration of 24 pre-eminent academic medical research centers. The LBDA is the leading advocacy group dedicated to raising awareness and advancing research about Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), which affects 1.4 million Americans and their families, making it one of the most common forms of dementia. The centers were selected for their clinical expertise in LBD, experience running clinical trials, capacity of facilities and geographic location (combined, the 33 principal investigators have run 380 clinical trials in the past five years). FAU’s LBDA Research Center of Excellence housed in the Comprehensive Center for Brain Health is spearheaded by James E. Galvin, M.D., M.P.H., a world-renowned neuroscientist, a leading international expert on LBD and Alzheimer’s disease and associate dean for clinical research in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. “It is a privilege to be designated a Research Center of Excellence by the Lewy Body Dementia Association and to join forces with our academic and medical partners across the nation,” said Galvin. “Our Comprehensive Center for Brain Health provides cutting-edge personalized care for a number of neurodegenerative diseases and we will continue to provide the highest level of care for those affected by Lewy Body Dementia.” Galvin is one of the leading international experts on LBD, the secondmost common dementia after Alzheimer’s disease, where patients simultaneously experience losses in cognitive function, mobility and behavior. He developed the “Lewy Body Composite Risk Score” (LBCRS) to quickly and effectively diagnose LBD and Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD) in about three minutes. The LBCRS is a brief rating scale that can be completed by a clinician to assess clinical

signs and symptoms highly associated with the pathology of this disease. Galvin also spearheaded the South Florida site for the HEADWAYDLB, a phase 2b multi-center, doubleblind, placebo-controlled study to evaluate an investigational medicine, RVT-101, for dementia with Lewy bodies. Although the results of this study were negative, it demonstrated the capacity of LBD patients to participate in clinical trials. Currently, there are no medications available to specifically treat LBD, and patients are typically treated with medications for Alzheimer’s. “Dr. Galvin is at the forefront of clinical research on Lewy Body Dementia and other related dementias,” said Phillip Boiselle, M.D., dean of FAU’s College of Medicine. “Our designation as a Lewy Body Dementia Research Center of Excellence will help us to further our efforts locally and enable us to serve as a regional resource working in partnership with a national network of outstanding centers.” The LBDA RCOE program will provide a centralized, coordinated research resource, supporting an expanded effort in conducting clinical trials related to LBD while helping to provide expert clinical care for patients, families and caregivers. The LBDA RCOE recently submitted a grant to the National Institutes of Health for a new clinical trial with Galvin as one of the co-investigators. LBDA's RCOE program aims to establish a clinical trials-ready network of leading institutions that share the common vision of providing the highest level of clinical care over the course of LBD treatment. In addition, the RCOE network seeks to increase access to support for caregivers and people living with LBD, increase the knowledge of LBD among the medical community and construct administrative infrastructure and generate the resources necessary to further advance LBD research and care.

“When a child commits suicide or does not go to school because of the fear of being bullied, or another child is killed the parents are very upset and are desperate for help and advice as well as immediate guidance,” said Stop Bullying Now Foundation Founder and CEO, Lowell Levine. “Palm Beach County School District has the school violence and bullying problem. We are the 11th largest School District in the Country with close to 200,000 K-12 students.” South Florida based, Stop Bullying Now Foundation Inc’s mission is to raise money for school districts around the country to address and eliminate the ongoing dangerous student bullying problem which is causing death, much mental and physical harm as well as forcing students to dropout of school. “These school districts do not have the funds to address this important problem because of budget cuts due to deficits,” said Levine. “Together we can make a huge difference and help not only the children but their families.” The program aims to,“Educate Bullying Awareness” by educating parents, mentoring children who are being bullied, and the main goal: to save children in grades age K-12 from committing suicide and eliminate fear of going to school, both very real issues when looking at statistics. Studies by the National Education Association (NEA) state the following: - 160,000 students stay home from school every day due to bullying.

- 30% of students who reported they had been bullied said they had at times brought weapons to school. - A bully is 6 times more likely to be incarcerated by the age of 24. - A bully is 5 times more likely to have a serious criminal record when he grows up. - 2/3 of students who are targets become bullies. - 20% of all children say they have been bullied. - 20% of high school students say they have seriously considered suicide within the last 12 months. Local Duo Doing Their Part to Help Stoneman Douglas’ Seniors As students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School are adjusting to their new normalcy, two local community servants are doing their part to make a difference in their lives. Eda and Cliff Viner, whose scholarship bears their name, announced this week that they will award a four-year grant to a Stoneman Douglas senior over the next four graduating classes. The Viners said this was their way of being supportive of the students and the Parkland community. Their hope is to touch one student from each class that was impacted by the Feb. 14 tragedy. Recipients must comply with all the Eda and Cliff Viner Community Scholars Foundation’s require-

ments - a 3.0 or higher unweighted GPA, complete 100 or more hours of community service and have a substantial financial need. They also must attend a public college or university in the state. The Boca Raton-based foundation has awarded scholarships to 75 graduates from high schools in Boca Raton and Delray Beach since its inception three years ago. That is an investment of more than one million dollars. Unlike most scholarship programs, this foundation pairs students with a mentor who works with them through their college tenure. The student is also given access to the 18 Viner Community Partners, a list of complimentary resources and services for them to access in need. Having sat on several scholar-

ship committees over the years and seeing the many obscure small scholarships that very few students are eligible for, it was comforting to see the introduction of the Viner program. As one of the Viner mentors, I have interviewed several of these students, and they are truly an exceptional group. Most are tops in their respective classes; some are average students who have the need and will to do well, if given the opportunity. Perhaps more importantly, almost all of these students used their time and talents to make their communities better. It was impressive to see how many of them refused to conform to the expectations and showed me and others from the “old generation” that so many of our ideas about them are

just plain wrong. It is so easy for us to subscribe to the notion that all today’s teenagers do is snap selfies, divulge way too much personal information and tinker on their smartphones. But the recipients I have met, punched holes in that theory. Their academic success is matched by a social consciousness that is truly inspiring – and refreshing. I am extremely proud of the outstanding difference my friends are making because they are able to help so many extraordinary students reach their potential. Eda and Cliff, you are making the best investment we can do in South Palm Beach County.

Make Finishing Well Your Aim! When you come to the end of your earthly journey, what monuments shall you leave behind to impact others? How many altars shall you have erected to celebrate your own fruitfulness in your lifetime? Will you have real fruit to show or only leaves to display? These questions are raised because all human creatures are placed on earth for a variety of reasons, with each individual wired uniquely to fulfill specific purposes. To that end, three actions are expected of everyone: to make decisions, to make progress, and to make a difference. Any individual is capable of doing all three. Obviously, this is not what appears in the report card at the conclusion of a person’s earthly pilgrimage. Many people may go

through life in its entirety without being able to make any meaningful decision, and though several attempt it, some often do it wrongly. Quite a few are incapable of advancing in any direction, about anything. Moreover, making a difference is something which not many consider, and fewer yet make it real. All humans are called upon to travel the path assigned to each. But since humans are social creatures, their paths always intersect with those of others, so that experiences may be shared, examples may be emulated, and mutual encouragement exchanged. Any activity for which proper planning occurs at every step of the way has every reason to succeed. Yet, any period of glory

is not guaranteed to be maintained indefinitely; past achievements are not necessarily today’s reality, much less tomorrow’s performance. One needs to make decisive provisions for the continuing success of an enterprise, since one may be taken away from its production and command at any time. Many stop at peak performance and, then, reach a plateau from which a decline can easily emerge. In my lifetime I have repeatedly observed how many individuals quickly descended from hero to zero; they lacked staying power, many were devoid of a moral compass, with several also destitute of common sense, people skills, and the additional resources which can ensure victory

at the finishing line. Throughout life, gains do not necessarily define you, just as losses should not diminish anyone. The essential factor is to know who you are, with all the assets and limitations which every individual possesses; to recognize barriers not as the end of the line, but merely as signposts to better things still ahead if you proceed amidst all challenges! Plan to finish well, for anyone can. Just follow this sound advice I once read: “Do the very best you can with what you have, where you are now!” God will do the rest and ensure triumph at last!

FAU Hosts Third Annual Women’s Leadership Institute More than 80 aspiring women leaders recently attended Florida Atlantic University’s third annual Women’s Leadership Institute (WLI), where they heard from a diverse group of speakers and engaged in discussions on current women’s issues. WLI is organized by FAU’s Weppner Center for LEAD and ServiceLearning. The annual event has a goal of empowering women and raising awareness of critical issues that face women in leadership, and providing them the skills to turn this awareness into action. “Working with the LEAD & Serve team challenged me to become a better leader and facilitator,” said Samantha Hurley, an FAU student minoring in leadership studies who helped organize the event. “I learned skills and techniques for event planning I would not have learned without this opportunity.” This year’s speakers included Lawonda Warren, an assistant city attor-

ney for the city of Delray Beach; Jumorrow Johnson, victim services practitioner for the state of Florida; and Andrea Oliver, Ed.D., associate vice president for student outreach and diversity at FAU. For the first time this year, WLI provided separate opportunities for FAU faculty and staff to participate in breakout sessions on topics such as navigating politics and personal finances. It was tremendous to have an advisory board of students and staff create such a remarkable program that engaged students, faculty and staff,” said Katie Burke, Ph.D., assistant dean of FAU’s Weppner Center for LEAD & Service-Learning. “It was great to see everyone come together to get informed, get empowered and get involved.” Following the speakers and panel sessions, WLI concluded with a simulated women’s march and a networking reception held in FAU’s Ritter Art Gallery.

An Evening With Sophia Loren What an incredible evening it was! I attended the show “An Evenng with Sophia Lauren” at the Seminole Coconut Creek Casino along with my friend, Maryann Stander, her son Scott Stander, and several friends. We enjoyed a fabulous lobster, crablegs, shrimp, filet mignon dinner and then went in to see the show “An Evening with Sophia Lauren” which Scott produced. Sophia Loren showed many scenes from her many movies and talked about her exciting life in pictures. Affter we attended a “Meet and Greet” and had a chance to meet Sophia personally at a VIP Champagne Reception.

Restrain Your Lips – You Might Be Rewarded There is an old American saying, “Loose lips sink ships.” A British equivalent, “Careless talk costs lives,” carried the same meaning – to beware of unguarded talk. These slogans during World War II were used to warn against discussing ship movements or unintentionally leaking vital information to spies. No sense letting the enemy know your plans. In the business and professional world, we do not typically regard ourselves as engaging in “war,” but the principle still applies: Careless, poorly considered words can be very damaging. “Loose lips” can ruin friendships, destroy customer relationships, and transform near-success into failure. Take Don, for example. He had formed a partnership with a close friend. Unfortunately, these two men had a serious dispute, and Don left the business angry, hurt, and suffered a substantial financial loss through no fault of his own. He considered suing his former partner, and wrestled with the temptation to disparage him when the right occasion presented itself. After all, Don had been wronged and he felt justice should be served. However, after much prayer – and the counsel of trusted friends – rather than seeking his own revenge, Don chose to honor God. He maintained contact with the former partner and demonstrated to him, in both word and deed, the unconditional love of Jesus Christ every time an opportunity arose. Don also chose to restrain himself from speaking poorly about his onetime business associate to others. About a year later, God restored the friendship, along with the partnership. Because he had refrained from speaking negatively about his partner, there was no need for

damage control, no unnecessary wounds to heal. This is why Bible passages like Proverbs 10:19 are so powerful and useful. It teaches, “When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, but he who restrains his lips is wise.” One way of applying this admonition is that if someone has hurt us, it would be good to take a long-term view and restrain our lips. We never know what the future brings. Here are some other Scripture passages to consider: The tongue, tough to tame. Just as a small bit controls a horse, or a rudder guides a large ship, how we use our tongue affects the course of our lives. “…the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue is also a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body…”(James 3:5-6). An instrument for either good or evil. Whether in a business meeting, a private conversation, or at a podium before many people, the tongue can serve as a tool for healing or a weapon for destruction. “The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse” (10:32). “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs12:18). Our use of words can be to our benefit, or for our harm.If cautious about what we say and how we say it, a day can go smoothly. If we speak unwisely and impulsively, a good day can quickly be ruined. “He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin” (Proverbs 13:3).

PBSC Helps Open STEAM Labs at Elementary Schools Two new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) learning labs were unveiled today at elementary schools in Broward and Palm Beach counties with the help of Palm Beach State’s Institute of Excellence in Early Care and Education. The first lab opened at Village Academy Elementary School in Delray Beach and the second at the Lauderdale Manors Early Learning Center in Fort Lauderdale. The labs were created with a twoyear $420,000 grant from The PNC Foundation’s Grow Up Great Initiative. Through the initiative, PBSC’s Institute of Excellence partnered with PNC, the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, The Young At Art Museum and the Broward and Palm Beach County school districts to bring more STEAM education to preschools. The spaces will serve as museums within the schools, where children can develop curiosity and interest in STEAM fields. “This event exemplifies that there is nothing more powerful than people coming together and collaborating for the common good,” said David Rutherford, vice president of Institutional Advancement at Palm Beach State, at the Village Academy opening. “Under the incredible leadership of President Ava Parker, J.D., the College is absolutely committed to making a difference in our community. Therefore, we are so grateful to PNC and all of our other partners for facilitating our ability to impact the community in such a positive way.” During the Village Academy event, Grace Kolbe, director of PBSC’s Institute of Excellence in Early Care and Education, read

her book, “A Turtle’s Tale” to 15 preschool children before they walked over to the new lab where they were greeted by Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster. Materials for both labs were selected by Kat Lai, instructional designer for PBSC’s Institute of Excellence, and Palm Beach and Broward County teachers. Many materials were ordered through Donor’s Choose, a nonprofit organization that crowdsources funding for classroom materials and projects at the request of public school teachers across the nation. The two-year grant also included funds for field trips and Family Fun Days for Palm Beach and Broward county preschool teachers at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium and The Young At Art Museum, 48 hours of professional development for 40 Palm Beach and Broward County preschool teachers, STEAM fairs at schools in both counties, the creation of STEAM case kits for classroom use, and a new STEAM website for PBSC’s Institute of Excellence. PNC recognizes that learning in children’s early years is essential for their long-term success. Through Grow Up Great, a $350 million, multi-year, bilingual initiative that began in 2004, PNC helps prepare children from birth to age 5 for success in school and life. With a focus on underserved children, Grow Up Great provides the leadership, advocacy, funding, volunteers and educational resources to help families, educators and community partners provide innovative opportunities that enhance children’s learning and development. Lynn’s Boczova Secures Fourth Player of the Week Plaudit For the fourth time this season, Klaudia Boczova of the Lynn University women's tennis team has been tabbed as the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. Boczova continues to dominate SSC competition as she went 6-0 this week at the top singles and doubles positions to help fourthranked Lynn to a 2-1 mark in league play - all against nationally-ranked opponents. The Fighting Knights first suffered a tough 5-4 setback to then-No. 4 Barry before bouncing back and taking down No. 26 Nova Southeastern, 8-1, and No. 24 Tampa, 7-2. In singles, 11th-ranked Boczova started the week with her biggest win of the season, dominating undefeated and second-ranked Sonja Larsen, 6-2, 6-0. Larsen had won an incredible 44 straight singles matches in dual play coming into the matchup with Boczova and has spent the majority of the season ranked No. 1 in the country. She then took down NSU's 26th-ranked Ana Navas, 7-5, 6-3, before winning at Tampa, 6-0, 6-0. Her double bagel at Tampa is the fourth time this season she did not drop a game in a singles match. On the season, Boczova is 18-1 in doubles and undefeated in singles at 19-0. She has yet to lose a set in singles action and has taken down eight nationally-ranked foes. Boczova now has four SSC weekly honors to her name this season, and five overall in her career dating back to her time at Nova Southeastern in 2016.
