COMMUNITY City Council Candidate Monica Mayotte Holds Campaign Fundraiser

By: Michael Demyan Monica Mayotte began her quest to run for City Council Seat D Thursday night with a fundraising event held at Dubliner Irish Pub. Rainy skies did not keep supporters from attending as numerous people gathered for the event in support of Mayotte. She will be challenging Councilman Robert Weinroth during the upcoming election season, leading up to voting day in March. Weinroth has held the position since 2014 and was re-elected for a three-year term after running unopposed during the 2015 election. Mayotte, who filed to run last month, spent the evening talking to the many guests in attendance, while food and drinks were served in the crowded pub. Seeing everyone show up for the fundraiser made her very enthusiastic for what is to come. “It’s so exciting,” she said. “You never know exactly how many people are going to show up and I’m so thrilled that everyone’s here and having a nice time. We’re going to learn all about each other and it’s an exciting night.” The longtime Florida resident has been involved with multiple aspects of the community during her 21 years

in Boca Raton. Along with being a Boca Helping Hands volunteer in the past, Mayotte is a former PTA president at Addison Mizner Elementary School and chairperson of the Green Living Advisory Board. She is currently the Climate Reality Leader of the Climate Reality Project’s Florida Region as well as a Citizens’ Climate Lobby volunteer. Heading into the election, Mayotte is putting much of her focus on overdevelopment, wanting to make sure that future development in the city does not have a negative impact on the quality of life in Boca Raton. Much of that also involves working toward a greener lifestyle, a topic that pushed her toward running for the seat on City Council. “I’ve been involved with Boca with the Green Living Advisory Board for seven years or so and I didn’t like the way that City Council wasn’t taking our advice, how to get residents to live a greener lifestyle, and I just wasn’t happy with the way that it was a one-way conversation,” Mayotte said. “I thought I needed to be able to advocate for the residents with a louder voice.” Voting for City Council Seat D, along with other city government positions, is scheduled for March 13, 2018.

Three PBSC employees win Bravo Awards Two faculty and one staff member received Palm Beach State College’s Bravo Award at the annual Employee Recognition Awards Ceremony this morning in the Duncan Theatre on the Lake Worth campus. Professors Suzanne Duff and Allen Webber and Interim Student Learning Center Manager Wesley Wells were selected from a college wide pool of 23 contenders nominated by their PBSC colleagues for the award. All nominees shared the distinction of going above and beyond the normal expectations of their jobs and enthusiastically supporting the College through creative contributions and outstanding service. The final selection was made by a committee representing all classifications of employees. Duff has partnered with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the College Wide Counseling Center to facilitate campus events that encourage students struggling with mental illnesses to seek help. One such event, “Love is Louder,” teaches students about mental health issues and how they can help themselves or others with these issues around the holidays. She also encourages students to participate in “Homeless Bags,” and event that provides care packages to those who don’t have housing or food in Palm Beach County.

Wells and Webber were both nominated for their contributions to the College’s new alma mater. Titled “Hail, Palm Beach State College,” the song was written by Wells and musically composed by Webber. It was sung for the first time by graduates at the fall commencement ceremonies last year. Judges who selected the song say it reflects timeless quality and fits the spirit of a revered, comprehensive state college. The lyrics also weave in the mascot, the College colors and the historical nature of the College. Wells was also nominated for his creativity and collaboration to enhance the College’s Palm Beach Gardens reading lab, where he has organized book clubs and numerous seminars. The Bravo Award winners received an engraved star award, a $75 cash prize, and they will have a luncheon with PBSC President Ava L. Parker. Employees eligible to be nominated for the award include full-time faculty and staff, adjuncts and regular part-time staff, after a minimum of six months of employment. In addition to the Bravo Award recipients and nominees, the ceremony honored 119 employees marking milestones in their length of service at the College, ranging from five to 40 years. Collectively, they represent 1,850 years of employment.

Town Center Gets in the Holiday Spirit with Events and Donations By: Michael Demyan With the holidays approaching, Town Center at Boca Raton is celebrating with multiple events, including traditional photos with Santa Claus. Making it to the front of the line to see Santa Claus is typically a very time consuming wait, but now guests are able to skip it by scheduling an appointment for this year’s Simon Santa Photo Experience. Appointments can be made by going to simonsanta. com and Santa Claus will be making appearances at Town Center until Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. “One of the great traditions of holiday shopping at Town Center at Boca Raton is the annual family visit to the Simon Santa Photo Experience,” director of mall marketing Sean Carroll said. “I know Santa can’t wait to greet children bringing him their holiday wishes.” The experience is sponsored by Gymboree Group and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, which is celebrating the release of Despicable Me 3 by handing out activity sheets for the kids. Visitors will also have an opportunity to make a donation to Save the Children through The Cherry Hill Programs. Children are not the only ones who will be able to have an opportunity to take a photo with the man in red. On Sunday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m., guests will be

able to bring their pets. The special event will take place after the mall closes so that shoppers will not be affected by the crowd of animals ready to see Santa. At the end of the night, the set will be cleaned thoroughly by the staff, making sure to remove allergens before more children arrive the next day. Town Center at Boca Raton is also partnering with Boca Helping Hands for three community events. The Thanksgiving Box Brigade is an ongoing initiative currently underway as the mall is collecting food donations from its stores. As an extra incentive, the store that gives the most donations get special parking spots during December. The mall will also be collecting food, along with toys for its annual Holiday Food and Toy Drive through December 31. They will be looking to top last year’s total of 230 pounds of nonperishable food. Shoppers will be able to drop off their donations inside containers at Simon Guest Services and Cafes at Boca. Those donations will be used during the Second Annual Christmas Day Feast for those in need at Town Center on Dec. 25 at 12 p.m. The festivities will include a decorated dining room, free photos with Santa and a Kid’s Zone as the mall ends the Christmas season with a gift to the community.

FAU Honors Local Veterans With Flag Pole Dedication

FAU currently serves more than 1,500 military and veteran students. FAU’s Military and Veterans Student Success Center serves as a hub for these students, providing them with financial assistance, academic support services, internship and employment opportunities, as well as networking and engagement events. FAU was recently named a 2018 Military Friendly® University in recognition of these efforts. “This new flag pole will serve as a beacon for our student veterans and all who are currently serving,” said Larry Faerman, Ph.D., associate vice president and dean of students. “We hope our students will remember the sacrifice behind these flags each time they see them, and that they will continue to look for new ways to support our veterans.”

Boca Regional Hospital CEO to Retire in August 2018 Fedele engineered massive turnaround at city’s medical center

By Dale King When Jerry Fedele retires as president and CEO of Boca Raton Regional Hospital next August, he will leave behind a legacy in philosophy and community spirit as well as lots of new brick and mortar. Since arriving in 2008 as part of a consulting team called in to prop up a facility that was hemorrhaging millions of dollars each year, “We built strength in the balance sheets. We are on strong footing. We have grown the institution and its utilization. We have gone from 2008, when we were losing $120 million a year, to now, when we have grown and are having capacity problems. But those are good problems.” Fedele, who will retire on Aug. 31, 2018, just days after his 65th birthday, remembers Oct. 1, 2008 very well. It was the day he walked into the Meadows Road facility for the first time. “It was a very exciting time, but one that was filled with challenges. I saw lots of opportunities, but at the same time, the physicians and board members were pessimistic. I remember thinking: we can do great things. I have to get the board and medical staff to think the same things.” Eventually, he did it – and did it so well that Boca Hospital changed its name from “Community” to “Regional” in 2010 to reflect its enlarged service area and to underscore improvements in the level, quality and variety of services. Within 18 months of entering Boca Hospital, “we broke even,” Fedele said. “Once we saved the hospital, it was all about redefining the vision. We started in 2010 to make the hospital the preeminent regional referral center. We also established the strategy for becoming an academic center for medical education,” working with the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. Ask Fedele what he did a decade ago to keep BRRH from being sold or shut down due to financial and management problems and he’ll cite the work of his associates who helped him work a miracle of salvation at the hospital affectionately known as “The Miracle on Meadows Road.” "When we succeed, we succeed as a team,” Fedele told the audience at the annual meeting of the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce in October where he and his sidekicks were called to the podium to receive the Award of Excellence. Fedele himself was honored not only for his nine years as president and CEO of BRRH, but as the 2016 Chairman of the Boca Chamber Board

of Directors. “Jerry has made his mark not only on the Chamber, but on an institution, that is deeply embedded in the fabric of our community,” said Chamber President and CEO Troy McLellan. “When Jerry took over at BRRH in 2008, the hospital was amid major downsizing and financial crisis. Nine years later, the hospital has never been stronger, having added world-class facilities and recognized financial success.” Last June, when Boca Hospital announced it was looking to “explore the possibility of establishing a strategic partnership with another healthcare provider,” Fedele cited in a press release “a host of advances and achievements” as evidence of BRRH’s transformation from “a capable community hospital into a leading academic tertiary medical center.” Included were: Designation as a “Top Ranked Regional Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report (the highest ranked hospital in Palm Beach County), the most “Top Doctors” in Palm Beach County as recognized by Castle Connelly, and creation of cutting-edge programs and facilities such as the Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute, the Marcus Neuroscience Institute, the Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute, the Wold Family Center for Emergency Medicine, the Gloria Drummond Physical Rehabilitation Institute and the Irving & Barbara C. Gutin Center for Robotic Surgery. “In technology, we went from having no robotic surgery to being the largest robotic surgery provider in Palm Beach County with the Gutin Center for Robotic Surgery.” Looking ahead, Fedele says: “I’ve always been a zealot about patient satisfaction. I hope this emphasis doesn’t change under whoever becomes the new CEO. But things will be different. Things will continue to evolve.” The BRRH boss hasn’t decided what retirement will bring. He may do consulting work or return to practicing law. He noted that he still has the J.D. degree he received from Duquesne University School of Law, where he was valedictorian of his class. He also holds an MBA from the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at University of Pittsburgh and a BS in mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh. Also, he loves bike riding and photography, the latter a hobby he shares with friends on Facebook. He’ll undoubtedly be seen around town, as he is now, with wife, Terry, on his arm, and he’ll be spending time with their grown children.

Despite our Differences, We Come Together at Thanksgiving Thanksgiving ranks among one of my favorite holidays. Not so much for the food that we will be blessed with but this weekend, many of us will spend quality time with family, friends and loved ones. As we take this time to pause, reflect and celebrate over a nice meal, let us not forget those in our community who are not as fortunate. Over the past two weeks, I have watched as hundreds of kindhearted residents were thrust into the Thanksgiving mood. Some cleaned turkeys, others labored over the stove cooking meals and dozens more packed baskets and boxes with the necessary side items that accompany the turkey or ham. Kudos go out to those who went above and beyond their normal jobs to make sure those families were taken care of this Thanksgiving. On Monday, I watched as employees in the city’s Community Improvement and Parks and Recreation departments passed out several 527 turkeys to families at Atlantic High school.

And less than 24 hours later, I saw some of the same recipients in line at the Wayne Barton Study Center here in Boca Raton getting turkeys and baskets of food. It was so exciting to see the diversified group of volunteers helping out on Tuesday. I am sure some of the recipients also received food from other sources so they will have an abundance of food this week. I only hope they will share a portion of what they collected with some of the needy among them, especially those who could not make it to one of the giveaway events. Several residents, including Ann Wright of Delray Beach, took food to those seniors who are homebound and do not drive or could not get to the distribution sites. I would be remiss if I did not recognize the staff at capital One Café downtown Delray Beach who made and gave away turkeys and baskets to 15 families around the city on Monday. While it may seemed unbelievable, there are some among us who will go

through this holiday hungry. I received a call and texts on Tuesday night inquiring about food for a family that was lost under the radar. Apparently, there are still residents who are not aware of the many food giveaway opportunities in our community. Only Wednesday morning, I learned of a story where a family went to Atlantic High School Monday evening to get a turkey but upon arriving at the gate, they saw members of the Delray Beach Police Department’s Criminal Justice Academy assisting. Thinking they were law enforcement personnel and fearing for their immigration status, they turned around and left. Fortunately, thanks to the Delray Beach Kiwanis Club, which donated 11 turkeys, that family received a turkey and a box of canned goods. It is my hope that before we even begin to make those New Year’s resolutions in a few weeks, we will try, starting now to be a little bit more caring about our neighbors at other times other than thanksgiving.

If we are as organized or coordinated as we are during Thanksgiving, we can address the food crisis in our communities. In truth, Thanksgiving should not be a one-day affair. I think it should be ongoing. We should ensure with the same fervor — all day, every day – that the needy among us are fed. I also pray this year that we can strive to put more emphasis on appreciating the people and experiences we have in our lives and less emphasis on the petty things that people may say or even do at times. The memories we get from spending time with others and the joy that comes from being content with what we have will last much longer and mean much more than anything that one can say about us. Finally, I must add that in addition to turkey, pumpkin pie, and football, wherever you are, please add safety to your list of things to keep track of this weekend. Happy Thanksgiving.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Be Thankful for Gifts and Giver! Every gift should be received with a grateful heart, especially toward the giver who remembered us with the gift. Sadly, gratitude is becoming a neglected practice among many who might despise the gift received, or think it was their right to receive a much better gift! Thanksgiving should never be ignored by anyone, for any gift received, be it great or small; be it something desired, or something totally unexpected, or one for which we can’t see an immediate use. Even when we receive a gift we may not particularly care for, gratitude should not be absent! For every human, God is

ultimately the source of any good and perfect gift, and what He sends to His human creatures is something for their well-being. As I learned in my youth, and never forgot, “all things are needful that He sends; nothing is needful that He withholds.” Indeed, the creator knows best what His human creatures require and He never fails to favor them with His unique benefits. In fact, humans are well-supplied by a gracious heavenly Father in all areas of life, even when many do not acknowledge that reality, and others prefer not to believe in a divine being Who truly cares and provides for them!

The act of thanksgiving should be a daily practice for every individual, for it is every day that human need is abundantly provided for by a watchful, loving creator. As Americans we are favored with a special holiday each year, designated for us to pause and reflect on how blessed we are and have always been, regardless of difficulties and troublesome situations being confronted in our national life, besides in our individual experiences. Yet, our gaze should not be on what we may lack, but on what we possess in such great measure. On this year’s Thanksgiving Day, let us again pause to thank our

Divine Provider, as we also render our thanks to His human agents who operate from various corners of society, and via manifold functions they fulfill for the benefit of so many, positively affecting human lives day after day. Instead of depending on the government, let us more fully manifest our dependence on Almighty God since what He offers is certain, and truly sufficient. To that end, let us always be grateful for what we already have, however small it might appear, so that greater gifts may be gradually granted to meet our every need of body, soul, and mind! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

LEGAL NOTICE

FAITH By Pastor Jason Hatley

The Power of Thank You This time of year families have all kinds of Thanksgiving traditions – from food to football, fishing to family, and even a little fighting for good measure. One of our family traditions (and maybe you have this one, too) is to go around the table and tell one thing that you are thankful for. It’s my favorite part of the holiday because, in taking time to say “thank you”, we’re reminded how much we have to be thankful for, and just how powerful those two words are. But for many, Thanksgiving is the only day of the year that we pause, reflect and are truly grateful. Sure we say “thank you” sometimes – when we pray, or to a co-worker who lends a helping hand. But, if we’re honest, we’re a lot better at complaining than thanking and we’ve lost the power of thankfulness in our everyday lives. As a result, our society has become more unsatisfied, unhappy, and unfulfilled. On this Thanksgiving holiday, however, I want you to know that God wants you to experience life at a higher level – a life of joy and contentment. And the secret is learning to be grateful. To help you get started, here are 3 things you can be thankful for every day: The Beginning of the Day – Even if you’re not a morning person, every new day is an opportunity to be thankful. One morning around the breakfast table, I wasn’t feeling very thankful (OK – I was grumpy). So, my wife started quizzing me… Did the sun come up this morning? Are you breathing? Is there coffee in your cup? Did you have food to eat? And just like that, the direction of my day changed. That’s the power of “thank you”. No matter what happened

yesterday, today is a new day! Little Blessings – Every time something good happens, you can be thankful because every good thing in your life, no matter how big or small, is a blessing. “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father…” – James 1:17 To make this very practical for you, every time you sit down to eat… every time you get paid… every time you complete a project at work… every time your children say, “I love you”… thank God for those little blessings. God Loves You – This is such a powerful truth, especially this time of year, because we don’t always feel a lot of love. For many, Thanksgiving and Christmas are not seasons of joy, but of loneliness, regret, fighting and grudges. Some will go through their first Thanksgiving with an empty chair at the table after the loss of a loved one. Others will be alone because their family lives elsewhere. In spite of these things, this week and every week, remember and give thanks that God loves you. “See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!” – 1 John 3:1 May this Thanksgiving be more than a day of gratitude for you. May it be the start of a life of gratitude where you learn to say “thank you” every day! Be sure to join us at The Journey Church in Boca Raton on Sunday, November 26 for the kick off of the brandnew series, Christmas Carols: Rediscovering the Meaning of the Season.

Jason Hatley is the lead pastor of The Journey Church in Boca Raton. The Journey meets at Grandview Preparatory School (Spanish River Blvd near I-95) each Sunday at 9:30am and 11:00am, and will celebrate the Grand Opening of their brand-new building in Boca Raton in Spring 2018. SPORTS FAU Will Host C-USA Championship After Seventh Straight Victory By: Jack Rubin

The Lane Train kept rolling Saturday night, as the Florida Atlantic Owls defeated rival Florida International by a massive score of 52-24. Florida Atlantic racked up 572 yards, outgained the Panthers by 269. FAU improved to 8-3 with the win, remaining undefeated in conference play. While it has been an odd year in the Florida college football universe, one thing is certain; the Owls are trending upwards. FAU reclaimed the Shula Bowl trophy with the rout. FIU beat the Owls 33-31 last year, sinking the Owls to 1-4 at the time. To call what Kiffin’s Owls have accomplished since then incredible is no understatement, and the victory over FIU is their latest accolade. Senior Night kicked off with FAU on offense in front of 24,116 fans. Quarterback Jason Driskel was perfect on the first drive, completing all five of his passes. The Owls drive spanned 76 yards,

culminating in a 13 yard touchdown catch by tight end Harrison Bryant. Later in the first quarter, Devin “Motor” Singletary snapped off a 70-yard touchdown run. The sophomore broke ex-FAU turned NFL player Alfred Morris’ single-season rushing yards record of 1,392 yards. FAU’s star totaled 164 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Singletary will remain a force on FAU’s offense for the next two years. FIU came within striking distance of the Owls when they made the score 14-10 with 3:43 to go in the second quarter. However, FAU immediately responded with a 75-yard drive capped off by another Driskel touchdown pass. Driskel had a great evening, delivering exactly what Lane Kiffin needs with four

weeks now about, you gotta keep knocking people off. If there's gonna be a new bully in town, you gotta go and take care of everybody.” In just one year under Lane Kiffin, FAU has improved in every possible way. A win over 1-10 Charlotte would put the Owls at 9-3 to finish the season. That would be their best regular season record since the program’s inception in 2004, lead by legendary coach Howard Schnellenberger. FAU has only one two bowl games in 13 seasons, and they are bowl eligible for the first time since 2013. Heightened press coverage has also come with success and a big name coach. ESPN’s College Gameday included FAU vs. FIU in their Saturday Selections segment, territory usually reserved for massive power 5 programs. Florida Atlantic is making waves nationally. The Owls will host the C-USA championship game on December 2, when North Texas comes to town. A win would give the Owls their first ever CUSA championship.

touchdown passes over 239 yards and just one interception. On the receiving end, senior Kalib Woods had a banner night in his last regular season home game. Woods caught 7 passes for 172 yards, two of which were touchdowns. His seven catches were good for 24.6 yards per reception. Florida Atlantic’s defense also impressed in the victory. While Kiffin’s offense thrived as they have all season, the defense totaled four sacks. Three of those came from sophomore linebacker Rashad Smith. Kiffin stated, "It's an exciting time for our players, for our fans (and) for our alumni. We've been beaten down for a while, and we've talked for a few
