Educate Tomorrow at FAU Holds Inaugural Celebration Event

On Saturday, October 13th, 2018, the Kathryn Krickstein Pressel MammoVan is coming to the Boca Raton Airport. Presented by the Boca Raton Regional Hospital and hosted by the Boca Raton Airport Authority (BRAA), the MammoVan will be performing mammograms from 8:00AM to 2:00PM at the Customs and Border Protection Facility, which is located at 3694 Airport Road, Boca Raton, FL. The MammoVan utilizes the most state-of-the-art mammography unit on the market - the Senographe Pristina 3D Mammography System. The 3D Pristina provides exceptional imaging quality while creating the most comfortable mammography experience possible. By combining a curved, warmer, more comfortable detector with easy to reach armrests and a faster, quieter scanning process, users no longer have to deal with the discomforts often associated with mammograms. This is the only mobile 3D Pristina system in Florida, providing a special opportunity for those who schedule an appointment during the MammoVan’s visit to the Boca Raton Airport. “There’s a significantly improved survival rate if breast cancer is discovered early,” said BRAA Executive Director

October 19 - October 25, 2018

Clara Bennett. “It’s critical for every appropriate age woman to get a mammogram. With the convenience of the MammoVan and the comfort of the newest technology, there’s less and less excuses not to get checked out.” Mammograms are 100% covered by insurance. There is also financial assistance available for those in need. Individuals who have had a mammogram elsewhere in the past are will need to bring their previous images (CD) with reports to their appointment. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said Bennett. “There’s no better time to make an appointment to get screened.” Schedule a mammogram today by calling 561-955-4700 or by visiting BRRH.com/Mammovan. To apply for financial assistance, contact Troy Bingham at 561-955-4294. Now in its 70th year of service to the Boca Raton community, the Boca Raton Airport is continuing its efforts to improve the health and well-being of everyone who calls this beautiful city home. The Airport is proud to partner with the Kathryn Krickstein Pressel Mammovan and the Boca Raton Regional Hospital and looks forward to giving continued support to better the community and empower its residents.

Random Thoughts Just few weeks ago, I encouraged you to support the West Boca High School Chorus’ effort to raise $8,000 for their music program. You responded and within hours of my appeal, they exceed their target by more than $1,000. Thank you. That’s the Boca Raton spirit. We can always rely on you to support our youth, especially in times of need. A Star Among us Speaking of supporting our youth, kudos to Jamael Stewart, a former Omni Middle and Olympic Heights High graduate who was recently at Bethune Cookman University’s homecoming honored as a rising star under 40. Stewart, who grew up in the public housing complex in Delray Beach, used a football scholarship as his ticket to then Bethune-Cookman College. And ever since he graduated in 2005, he has

been making waves whether in MiamiDade County, the Bahamas or in Delray Beach. Shortly after he returned home, Stewart teamed up with his cousin, T.J. Jackson, and founded the nonprofit Prep & Sports Inc., which invests in young athletes through academic support, skill-building and mentoring. Jackson, who also played football, is head football coach at Atlantic High School. Prep & Sports Inc. uses trained teachers to help students prepare for the SAT, and assist with reading, and honing math skills, while former and current NFL players practice alongside them on the field. After nine years of working for Breakthrough Miami, a nonprofit that prepares middle school students for college, Stewart returned to his roots in 2016 and has been changing lives for

the better since. As assistant community improvement director for the city, he has literally been doing that – improving his community. He has used his story to inspire countless young people. I am proud and pleased to share that both Stewart and Jackson are alums of KOP Mentoring Network. New Boss in Chargge Welcome to longtime health care executive Maggie Gill, who recently was named chief executive officer at Delray Medical Center. Gill comes from Novant Health UVA Health System, which runs three hospitals in Virginia. She was named CEO in July 2017. Before that, she was president and CEO of Memorial Health in Savannah, Georgia, where she served as president and CEO since 2011. She initially joined Memorial in 2004 as vice

president of finance and managed care and became the hospital’s chief operating officer in 2005. Gill will also be CEO of Tenet’s Palm Beach Group, consisting of five hospitals including Good Samaritan Medical Center, West Boca Medical Center, St. Mary’s Medical Center and Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center. She replaced Mark Bryan, who had been CEO of Delray Medical Center for about eight years. Eric Evans, Tenet Healthcare’s president of hospital operations, said it best that Gill is well positioned to help the hospital continue to grow and build the wide-range of lifesaving, awardwinning programs they offer including comprehensive stroke care. POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Connecting With Other People There are some people we meet who, after several encounters, we still feel we don’t know them, or at least we don’t know them significantly or sufficiently to trust them completely! Is this their fault or ours? It can be of either one, or it can be from neither. Some people never show themselves adequately to others, while we ourselves can, sometimes, be slow in our own grasp of what they’ve revealed about themselves to us. Words and gestures can be very deceiving, even when these have never intended so to be! There are others, however, that honestly portray their true selves from the

very first moment they ever meet somebody new. They offer a key to their heart from the outset, apart from any potential romantic interest. Moreover, they don’t leave any doubt about the genuine sincerity of their words, deeds, and intents. Their positive posture is fully genuine! Most often, the problem is more in the reluctance of someone in fearlessly accepting the other, taking that person at his/her word, more easily acknowledging the sincerity of the other, and not reading in the gestures and comments of the other what was not communicated at all. Unquestionably, some persons “adver-

tise” themselves in such way that others can rather easily dismiss any desire of developing a long-term, friendly relationship. There’s something real that, in spite of cordiality, won’t succeed beyond that initial “hello.” And there is nothing wrong with that! Friendships that are developed, and really go somewhere desirable, take time, as human experience confirms in these and other related experiences. Varied settings for encounters can be planned, and time can be given for each person to observe the other in several human situations. Without intruding, significant questions may be legitimately asked one

another, so as to establish a mental profile of each other and cautiously proceed until a true friendship can be established or only an occasional faceto-face encounter is desirable. Each individual needs to allow his/ her temperament, and other unique traits, to confirm their sense of confidence and satisfaction, as an attempt to relate with confidence can indeed happen. And when such is the case, how wonderful it can be for, as social creatures fashioned by a divine creator, people need people, and those who recognize that, and strive to achieve this goal, are indeed “the luckiest people in the world!”

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Great Gatsby Birthday Fundraiser at Boca Resto

I celebrated my birthday with over 30 friends and my darling Daughter, Melanie and son in law, Michael who flew down from New York to join me for this special birthday fundraiser to support Lynn Cancer Institute, in memory of my husband, Bob Beasley. Friends came from as far as Pittsburgh and Boone, No. Carolina to help me celebrate my special day. We raised over $7500 for Lynn Cancer and still have many silent auction items that did not sell to try to sell at another event. A big thank you to all that helped me put this fabulous event together and to Arnie Steinbeg, Jackie Nicholson, Carol Porter, Melanie, and Michael Conley and Avner Eli and all my fabulous Boca friends for helping to make the evening so special.

The Virtue of Exceeding Expectations Often people in business deal with a temptation to do the bare minimum, to satisfy the requirements but not go the “extra mile” in serving the customer, the supplier, or even the employee. Such thinking, however, can be very short-sighted. Not to mention selfcentered, rather than others-centered. Contrary to this type of approach to business, I have been delighted to work with a number of companies whose expressed desire and goal is to “exceed expectations.” They want to be certain to do more than they had contracted to do. They want each customer’s experience to be so memorable that they will be eager to do business with them again. Not only that, but to provide services in such a manner that “satisfied customer” recommendations and referrals would be virtually guaranteed. Recently my wife and I took part in an 11-day group tour to many parts of Italy. It was truly one of those “exceeded our expectations” experiences. It wasn’t perfect; some of the hotels we stayed in were better than others. But our guide for the entire tour was exceptional; the motorcoach in which we rode was new and comfortable; the driver was first-class; and each of the stops on our tour had been carefully chosen to provide a broad cross-section of Italian life and culture. Especially for first-time visitors to Italy. I do not know if the tour agency had this in mind, but a commitment to exceeding the expectations of whomever we happen to be serving – customer, supplier or employee – is reflective of Jesus’ admonition that we should, “in everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you”(Matthew 7:12). Not long ago several friends

www.bocaratontribune.com

were talking about their differing experiences at local restaurants. For one, when the meal order was clearly inaccurate, the worker simply responded, “Well, I don’t know what you expect me to do about that.” Wow! Would that motivate you to return to that restaurant? Another friend had a very different experience, however. He and his wife had eaten at another restaurant several times, enough for a particular server to recognize them and remember their dining preferences. This type of service, which definitely exceeded their expectations, has made them loyal and frequent customers – ones that reward their good service with generous tips. In doing business with others, it is easy to become memorable: memorably good, or memorably bad. If we want to develop lasting relationships, “memorably good” is always the better option, don’t you think? Several places in the Scriptures, including Romans 13:8, Galatians 5:14 and James 2:8, we see the admonition that we are to “love your neighbor as yourself.”It is doubtful that we could conceive of a greater core value than that. Making a profit is important. As is staying in business and growing the business. Mastering our craft is essential. But if we are loving our “neighbor” as ourselves – our customers, suppliers, and those who work for us or with us – profits and growth are almost certain to follow. If my wife and I ever decide to take tour another country, you can bet we will be quick to consider the company that unpretentiously succeeded in exceeding our expectations. And keeping our recent trip in mind is a good reminder for me to strive to exceed the expectations of others.

Boca Raton Tribune Welcomes Jon Carter as Newest Columnist Editor’s Note: The Boca Raton Tribune is thrilled to announce that Jon Carter will join the staff as a columnist with his “Carter Talks” column. Below is an introductory message from Carter: My name is Jon Carter and I immigrated from Ontario, Canada in 2009. Moving can be stressful for anyone but moving to a new country as a 13-year-old is a complete culture shock. I didn’t know it at the time, but I had moved t the greatest city in the world: Boca Raton, Florida. Living in a very small town that had seen all its jobs vanish, offered very few educational opportunities, and had a terrible climate caused people to grow up with a dream of getting out and moving anywhere else. I felt like the luckiest kid on earth playing at massive parks like Sugar Sand or going to pristine public beaches and learning about our unique ecosystem at Gumbo Limbo. I truly believe that there is no place better to grow up than Boca Raton. Since arriving here, I’ve seen Boca Raton go through many changes and it has been exciting to witness the transition of our beautiful city. While I was a student at Boca Raton Community High School starting to think about where I would pursue my higher education, I was always warned to avoid FAU (or what we called “Find Another University”)

October 19 - October 25, 2018

if I wanted to get a good education and live the “college experience.” I ended up going to Palm Beach State College to save money while I figured out what I wanted to do. I had the honor of serving as Palm Beach State College’s Student Body President for two years and eventually became the youngest appointed to Boca Raton’s Community Advisory Panel. As a member of the Panel, I am part of a team of volunteer residents from different backgrounds in our community who come together to host town halls and listen to the input of the residents of Boca Raton to suggest improvements to our City Council. In 2017, I transitioned to Florida Atlantic University, which now one of the top public universities in the state, and later that year was appointed as ViceChairman of the Community Advisory Panel. We are living in a very interesting time in our city. Our universities are growing, businesses are attracted to us, and people are moving here to start their families. I’ve had some pretty cool experiences throughout my college years and now as a senior at FAU, I hope this column can provide some insight on politics, college life, and what our amazing city has to offer. This is column is for you, the reader, so if there is ever a topic you would like me to cover, please do not hesitate to ask.

Craig “Rusty” Allen was born on March 18, 1947 and passed away on October 11, 2018. He is loved and remembered as a husband, father, grandfather (“Papa”), brother, uncle, teacher, and friend. Craig led an extraordinary life. As a boy, he showed remarkable talent as a trumpet player, performing professionally with Jazz legends including Marcus Belgrave and Dizzy Gillespie. He retained a life-long love of musical exploration and improvisation, often explaining, “There’s only one time signature, One over One.” At the age of twenty he served as a soldier in Vietnam. Craig went to Michigan State University on the GI Bill. There he met and fell in love with Diane Levine. They married after only knowing each other a few months and stayed together for nearly 48 years. They shared the deepest love and partnership, and their children and grandchildren were Craig’s pride and joy. Craig earned a Master’s Degree in Music Composition. He left an impressive catalog of original music, from full classical symphonies to small chamber and solo pieces to avant-garde Jazz creations, which he called “Meditative Etudes”. Craig was deeply spiritual and religious

in his own unique fashion. He attended seminary and became an ordained Rabbi, returning to the Army as a chaplain, and later serving as a civilian Rabbi to various congregations. He studied the Torah nearly every day of his adult life, and took great joy in the art and discipline of Hebrew calligraphy. Craig loved to laugh and joke, and could find connection with everyone he met. His example taught others about showing respect and dignity to all. He is profoundly missed, and his memory is cherished.

YMCA of South Palm Beach County Launches Fast-Track Giving Campaign To Raise $561,000 for the “561” Community

To support thousands of “561” residents of all ages and backgrounds struggling to reach their full potential, the YMCA of South Palm Beach County has kicked off its year-end fast-track “Change a Life” Giving Campaign to fund financial assistance scholarships. With YMCA-SPBC Board Member Beth Johnston at the helm serving as the 2018 Giving Campaign Chair, a motivated crew of donors, volunteers, employees, members and corporate and philanthropic partners are committed to surpassing the “561” campaign goal of $561,000 in just 56 days. Recognized as a positive force and an impactful “community hub” for 46 years, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit social services organization drives financial aid funding in countdown to the holiday season to ensure that no family or individual in need of services and programs is turned away. Continually taking on the challenges that shape the community’s future, the Y, through its

October 19 - October 25, 2018

Giving Campaign, provides those with financial hardship the same opportunity as all Y members to be healthy and thrive, connect with others and contribute to a better community. “From tackling the achievement gap to teaching healthy habits for a lifetime and giving people the chance to strengthen their community through volunteering, everything the Y does is in service of ‘building a better us’,” shared 2018 Campaign Chair Johnston who reports that one in four YMCA-SPBC members receive some type of financial assistance that crosses all ages, race, ethnicity, social-economic and language barriers. “Since we believe everyone has the power to make their lives and community better, the Y opens its doors to all- no matter who they are, where they come from or their ability to pay.” Because 100 percent of dollars contributed to the YMCA’s Giving Campaign is restricted solely for scholarships, not funding administration or operations budgets, donors will be making an immediate and lasting impact on their neighbors, colleagues, employees. According to Johnston, the energized campaign drivers are teaming up to host fundraising events and launch phone brigades, while individually inviting friends, family and colleagues to experiential

IMPACT Day tours and sharing the Y story with their employers. “Every day, our community faces new challenges that create a greater need for the work we do,” noted Jason Hagensick, president and CEO of the YMCA-SPBC that is comprised of: the Peter Blum Family YMCA of Boca Raton, the Devos-Blum Family YMCA of Boynton Beach, the Schmidt Family YMCA Preschool at the Volen Center and the YMCA@901 NCCI. “More and more children face seemingly insurmountable learning gaps and families find it difficult to spend quality time together. People are not connected to their neighbors and face-time happens through a phone. And instead of seeing the income gap shrink, it seems all we do is watch it grow.” Funds raised through campaign efforts will enable the Y to provide increased access to successful programs that reach more people who need them, with a focus on the most vulnerable communities. These include helping children and teens develop self-confidence, character, values and leadership skills through innovative and nurturing youth programs and creating communities that support healthy living. This involves addressing childhood obesity and chronic disease from children to seniors and supporting their physical, intellectual and spiritual strength. Scholarships to the Y’s transformational programs include Water Safety and Drowning Prevention programs, Chase’s Place for

special needs individuals, Teen Leadership Programs, Youth Sports and Programs (PreK, Elementary, Middle and High School), Y Bikes, summer camps including specialty camps such as the STEAM Caridad summer camp. Other life-changing Y offerings include its newly launched LiveSTRONG, a 12-week exercise program to help cancer survivors regain their strength after cancer treatment, its diabetes six-week self-management course and the collaboration it has with the National Parkinson’s Foundation of South Palm Beach County to offer Surf & Turf, a program focused on delaying the onset of symptoms of the disease. As 2018 comes to a close, Johnston reports that the “Y’s dedicated campaigners are reaching out to everyone they know asking for the Y’s Giving Campaign to be included on their personal and corporate holiday lists. Even a small amount can go a long way for a family or individual.” Last year, the South Palm Beach County’s Y Giving Campaign raised $542,586, which enabled the social services nonprofit to provide programs such as sports, after-school and preschool to those in need. Through this year’s campaign, the Y hopes to impact the lives of even more children, adults and seniors through membership and programs. To learn more about how you can support the Y and its 2018 Giving Campaign, please contact Kimberley Trombly-Burmeister at ktburmeister@ymcaspbc.org or visit www.ymcaspbc.org/give for more information.

Palm Beach Atlantic’s Rivadeneira Burkhardt’s Triple-Double Leads No. 18 Sailfish to 3-1 Win over Named SSC Player of the Week Embry-Riddle

Palm Beach Atlantic (PBA) men’s soccer’s Claudio Rivadeneira was named the Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. The junior forward scored twice, including the gamewinning goal against Eckerd on Saturday.

received a long diagonal pass up the left side of the field. He danced in back and forth, between defenders before unloading a shot that beat the Eckerd keeper.

The Sailfish sit atop the SSC standings with 21 points and a 7-1 record in league play with two matches remaining. PBA is 13-1 overall.

After Jack Burrows tied the match at 2-2, Rivadeneira struck again in the 76th minute. Rafael Souza played a ball to the middle of the field outside the 18 that Rivadeneira struck on the first touch to lift the ‘Fish to the victory on the road.

Rivadeneira helped lead the Sailfish back from a 2-0 deficit against the Tritons on Saturday. Eckerd scored for the second time just a few moments into the second half. In the 64th minute Rivadeneira

Rivadeneira leads PBA and is tied for sixth in the Sunshine State Conference in both goals (7) and points (19). He also had a two-goal game against Newberry and has three game-winners this season.

Palm Beach Atlantic volleyball got a tripledouble from senior Molly Burkhardt on Saturday afternoon and won a wild four-set match against Embry-Riddle inside Rubin Arena. The Sailfish have won five consecutive matches and are now 19-3 overall and 11-3 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Eagles drop to 13-8 on the season and 7-7 in league play. The Sailfish held a 17-15 lead in the opening set after back-to-back kills from freshman Amber Rowoldt. Embry-Riddle then went on a run and took advantage of a couple Sailfish miscues to take the opening set 25-23. The Sailfish were taken to five sets back in September by Embry-Riddle, and were trailing early in the second set on Saturday, down 7-4. PBA then went on a 10-1 run to open a commanding lead in the set. Senior Ally Rohn had three service aces in four points to help the ‘Fish open up the 14-8 lead. The Sailfish had nine blocks in the second set, as Sophia Rasmussen had seven block assists and Sophie Hoekstra had six in the frame. The ‘Fish kept up their good play late in the set to win 25-14. The ‘Fish opened up the third set with a 7-1 run, as four different PBA players picked up kills in the run. Burkhardt had back-to-back aces shortly after to open up an 11-3 lead for

the Sailfish. The ‘Fish continued their solid play and a Jennie Anderson kill closed out the set for the ‘Fish 25-19. The final set was close throughout, and PBA led 23-22 late in the set looking to put away the match and avoid going to five sets for a second time this season with ERAU. A Hoekstra kill and another Rohn service ace closed out the 3-1 win for the Sailfish. Burkhardt had a monster match for the Sailfish, as the St. Augustine, Fla. native finished with 15 kills, 21 assists, 21 digs, and five blocks for her first triple-double of the season. Rohn and libero Lilly Turner both picked up double-doubles as Rohn finished with 19 assists and 16 digs while adding six service aces and Turner had 10 assists and 16 digs. Raegan Grooms had another solid match in her senior season, as she finished with 12 kills and just one error while adding nine digs. Rasmussen, making her first start of the season, had six kills and 10 blocks. Hoekstra finished with eight kills and seven blocks on the afternoon. The Sailfish will return to action next weekend in Orlando, Fla. as they will play three matches against Gulf South Conference opponents at the SSC/GSC Crossover Tournament.

Due to High Demand, Boca Raton FC Announces November Open Tryout

As a result of a very positive Open Tryout on September 22, Boca Raton Football Club is delighted to announce they have added an Open Tryout date in November. With the club continuing to build its team for the 2018 and 2019 season, Boca Raton FC will be looking for players age 18 and over to fill rosters for their APSL, and NPSL squad for the 2018 Fall Season, and the 2019 APSL, and NPSL season. The open tryouts will be held at Cypress Park (1301 Coral Springs Dr, Coral Springs, FL 33071) on November 3, checkin will be at 8:30 a.m. Boca Raton FC’s head coach, Jim Rooney, as well as his staff of coaches, will be on hand to look at each player and run the tryout. “We had a fantastic turnout in our September Open Tryout, but unfortunately I’m sure we missed some players who may have been unable to attend,” said Rooney. “We had a talented group last season but as we continue our preparations for the 2019 season, maybe there are players who slipped through the cracks that the club has not yet seen that could be useful in not only our APSL team but also our NPSL club.” The tryout date at Cypress Park (1301 Coral Springs Dr, Coral Springs, FL 33071), is November 3 at 9:00 am, with check-in at

8:30 a.m. Players who try out for Boca Raton FC have the opportunity to play in four different leagues, play in high-caliber competitions, as well as friendlies such as the ones the club has played in the past versus the New York Cosmos, FC Shakhtar Donetsk, Jamaican National Team, and São Paulo. Players who play in the NPSL team will also have the opportunity to play in the NPSL Showcase in 2019 where hundreds of European and MLS scouts come out to see the best NPSL has to offer. If selected as a member of Boca Raton FC, players will have photos, and videos of their games which will help boost their resume, as well as have access to FTX Performance, a Boca Raton FC partner. Furthermore, Fall Season players are the first to be seen for our Summer 2019 season. During the summer season, Boca Raton FC gives 23 full scholarships to the best players, evaluated by the coaches. Male hopefuls, aged 18 and over, interested in attending the Open Tryout must preregister and can do so by heading over to http://bit.ly/2zZWj6S. The registration fee to participate in the tryout will be $100 per player and must be made online during the registration process. Spaces at the open tryouts will be limited and by pre-registration only.
