The winners will be announced during the Festival of the Arts Boca concert on March 10, 2024. Applications, including a $25 donation to the Festival and a link with a 5- to 15-minute video performance, will be accepted through December 15 at www.festivalboca.org/competition. The competition has only one level and no specific repertoire requirements; students are encouraged to perform one or more pieces that best reflect their skills and personal preferences. “This competition was conceived in the midst of the pandemic in 2021, as we realized how much our music students were suffering from the absence of performance opportunities,” said Joanna Marie Kaye, Executive Director of the Festival of the Arts Boca. The goal of the program is for students to gain experience, showcase their hard work, and contribute to the cultural landscape of the local community by participating in an internationally recognized performing arts event. The Music Competition rotates its focus on different instrument types – strings, winds and brass, and piano. It is judged by distinguished professionals from around the country and the winners are given a cash prize to help them pursue college and professional careers in music. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three competitors. First place will receive $5,000 and the opportunity to perform at a Festival of the Arts Boca concert in 2025; second place will receive $3,000; and third place will receive $1,500.

November 09 - November 16, 2023

The Music Competition recently won the award for Best Hybrid Event in the state of Florida by the Florida Festivals and Events Association. This experience makes a big impact on the lives of music students. The 2020 competition winner said, “This opportunity really means the world to me, especially during these strange, difficult times. Thank you to all who have dedicated time and effort to make this competition possible, I am extremely honored and grateful. This prize will be a big help towards my music school tuition.” The Schmidt Family Center for the Arts was formed with the goal of exposing young children and their families to the fine arts. Brain Bowl Does A Movie, Holiday Shopping And Alzheimer Awareness By Marci Shatzman

Tables with info and merchandise were set up outside and in the lobby at the Movies of Delray on Sunday “to help our community with Alzheimer’s and dementia.” Attorney and Brain Bowl founder and CEO Pamela Higer-Polani brought together supporters to holiday shop and watch the latest Taylor Swift tour flick. Taylor wasn’t there of course, but Boca philanthropist and Facebook maven Arlene Herson got a round of applause and a goody bag for bringing a package of adult diapers, as attendees were urged to do. Fellow philanthropists and recent FAU benefactors Marilyn and Jay Weinberg were among a throng of Brain Bowl supporters who came out to mingle and peruse tables full of necklaces, jewelry and hats with bling. Party planner Lady Ashley set up a photo op with balloons by the theaters. Arnie Steinberg provided vocals and music. High school students sport-

ed purple pom-poms and Brain Bowl hats to usher, and earned community service points for their presence. But there was a more serious side to the event. The Alzheimer Association had a table reminding people the Walk to End Alzheimer’s is this Sunday Nov. 12, gates open 8 a.m., ceremony 8:30 a.m., 5K walk with one-mile options 9 a.m. in South County Regional Park’s Sunset Cove Amphitheater in western Boca. The park is on Glades Road west of U.S. 441. To register, go to alz.org/BocaRatonWalk. Brain Bowl event attendees were also asked to buy a blue ribbon or socks to support Israel, which many did. And Debra Herrmann, formerly with the American Committee Weizmann Institute of Science, is now representing Jerusalem’s Herzog Medical Center needs. “So many New York donors live here, we wanted to start something in Florida and statewide,” she said about the American Friends of Herzog hospital. www.bocaratontribune.com

Serving Others – And Being Treated Like A Servant In the marketplace, we hear terms such as “business leaders,” “corporate executives” and entrepreneurs in referring to people holding positions of influence and authority. But how often do we hear people describe themselves as “servants” – unless they are complaining? The term servant can be regarded as demeaning, a term for someone of little value. Some might even view it at the same level as a slave. But in a real sense, “servant leadership” is not only a legitimate term but also an empowering approach that can maximize productivity individually and organizationally. We can find numerous examples of top executives who have embraced servant leadership in utilizing the gifts and talents of employees and team members, empowering them to put those to the best possible use. But it requires is a willingness to prioritize the needs and interests of others first and give them a stake in matters of importance to

them. The Bible speaks to this in Philippians 2:3-4, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” It is normal for people in authority to expect special privileges and deference because of their positions, but as the passage states, it requires humility to put the interests of others ahead of one’s own. Servant leadership is not limited only to top executives and people in supervisory roles. An employee can lead by serving others regardless of their status in the organization. As Ephesians 6:5-8 instructs, “Slaves [employees], obey your earthly masters [employers] with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of

God from your heart. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, no men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.” In reality, servant leadership rarely comes easy for any of us. As Monday Manna contributor Ken Korkow has observed, determining to serve others in the business world is not without its downside: “You will know you are a servant when you are treated like one. I want people to view me as a good servant of God. I want them to be impressed with my self-sacrificing commitment to the Lord and to others. But that’s not the mark of a real servant!” “A true servant is one who works in the shadows, even invisible, never drawing attention to himself or herself – simply knowing, anticipating, and meeting the desire of the master. For believers in Jesus Christ, this means serving Him and people He sends our way.”

In our desire to become servants of Jesus Christ in the marketplace, we should look to Him as the foremost example. He said, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). When we consider that for Jesus, giving His life meant dying on a crude wooden cross to atone for the sins of mankind, we understand what being a servant truly means. Even if it involves what we often describe as making “the ultimate sacrifice.” © 2023. Robert J. Forgiven People Forgive Others “Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others.” Colossians 3:13 (NLT) A lot of people think God carries grudges. They picture God up in heaven, waiting to zap them for anything they do wrong. Here’s what God is really like: “I am the God who forgives your sins, and I do this because of who I am. I will not hold your sins against you” (Isaiah 43:25 GNT). God wants November 09 - November 16, 2023

to forgive, and he has done everything necessary to forgive your sins in Christ. Even before the world was made, God was already planning in Christ to forgive your sins. He knows every wrong thing you’re going to do. None of it surprises him! Before you were born, God made a plan to offer you forgiveness for all the guilt that’s in your life. That’s why God can say this: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1 NIV).

Condemnation is gone because of what Jesus Christ did for us. He offers unconditional, complete, consistent, eternal, by-grace forgiveness in all of our lives. What a relief ! You don’t have to suffer or pay for your sins now or in eternity. They’re paid for by Jesus Christ. You are forgiven if you accept that gift of salvation from Jesus. Once you recognize that you’re forgiven, you are then enabled and strengthened to forgive other people. How do you do that? “Make allowance for each other’s faults, and

www.bocaratontribune.com

forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others” (Colossians 3:13 NLT). Take a good look at yourself, and you may see ugliness, selfishness, and sin. But the important thing is how God sees you. You are his creation, a masterpiece designed to live for him and bless others. When you take a g ood look through God’s eyes, you see the forgiveness that only he can give. By accepting his forgiveness in your life, you’ll be able to offer it to others.

Spirit launches holiday gift drive at Sklar By Marci Shatzman You know the official start of the holiday season has arrived in Boca when local businesses start collecting for Spirit of Giving’s annual Holiday Gift Drive. This year, 6,800 underserved kids will have gift tags with their names and hopedfor choices at venues that can still sign up to collect presents, Spirit executive director Lindy Harvey said at the gift display in the lobby of Sklar Furnishings. “With all the inflation, there’s more children in need this year,” she said. People can register to fulfill a gift tag, become a collection site or make a donation on their website, Harvey noted: https://spiritofgivingnetwork.com/ “We need to collect the gifts by Dec. 8,” she said, adding they also need volunteers to help sort the gifts each nonprofit distributes to the children they serve. Signups on their website, too. Sklar’s general manager Linda Gunn Paton welcomed guests to the venue that’s often used for nonprofit fundraisers, and to get the word out like this one. “I love this organization and I’m so

impressed with what they do. This toy drive is just one of many things,” said Dyana Kenney, a Spirit board member since 2017. The event doubled as an official welcome for two Italian artists whose work is available at Sklar. Venetian artist Anna Paola Cibin presented a talk with images of her work, including hand-painted screens and an elaborate fish accessory that carried out the theme in many of her installations. Fabio Pelosini, regional manager Americas for Barovier&Toso’s Murano blown glass lighting, introduced his company’s hand blown glass since 1295 included an elaborate chandelier at Sklar. He brought along his wife, Tiziana, whose Curly Bags Italian handbag display got plenty of attention that evening.

Walking the mall for Caring Hearts By Marci Shatzman

You won’t hear gripes about getting up early to walk the still closed Town Center of Boca Raton mall Sunday morning to raise money for a center for people with memory loss and their families. Supporters of Florida Atlantic University’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center, part of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing were happy to be there. Wearing official walk T-shirts, teams and individuals committed to the cause posed for photos against a Keeping Memories Alive quilt. “This walk helps us do what we need to do,” said Caring Hearts Auxiliary president Terry Fedele to open the 17th annual “Keep Memories Alive” walk-in-the-mall fundraiser. Shoutouts went to Christine E. Lynn, always there to cut the ribbon to officially start the walk, and the namesake Greens “who made such a generous gift in 2004 we can never thank them enough,” Fedele said. “We’re committed to making a difference,” said the walk’s co-chair Jay Whelchel, whose family held photos of his mother, former Mayor Susan Whelchel. Last year’s event was dedicated to her memory following her valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease. “Her legacy continues. We’ve raised almost $75,000 for this journey of hope and compassion for those who need it the most,” he told the assembled crowd. “This year’s theme is ‘Planting Seeds for Memory and Wellness,’ in observance of past and present challenges that individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related November 09 - November 16, 2023

dementias and their families have faced,” announced co-chair and board member Patricia Liehr, professor emeritus in the College of Nursing. That explained why so many teams and children were sporting green spiral headbands. Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer and Council member Fran Nachlas presented a proclamation and named the day in honor of the center. “So many lives are touched by this terrible disease, we hope by next year we’ll find a cure,” Singer said. Among the longtime supporters was Patricia Thomas, the first auxiliary president. “People tell their friends they’re taking classes,” Thomas said. In fact, artwork by people who attend the center was displayed on easels around a fountain. FAU people were out in force for the walk, including college of nursing dean Safiya George, and a team led by library dean Linda Marie Golian-Liu. “Our goal is to ensure that we eliminate any waiting lists for individuals and families in need as soon as possible,” said Maria de los Angeles Ortega, associate dean of clinical practice and the center’s director. She plans to use the funds raised to expand the center’s programs and services. Increased government funding will help eliminate a waiting list and bring the center back to capacity, she said in an interview.

Doing Business Ethically Tips Get More Popular By The Minute By Marci Shatzman No wonder Pastor Bill Mitchell’s sage advice on how to conduct business relationships is sold out for the next four months with an ecumenical following. CityLead Boca’s November gathering was so packed, attendees were asked to raise their hand if there were any empty seats at their table in Boca Raton Community Church Church. Leading with Understanding’s session topic shared ways to communicate clearly, how to relay negative feedback, build trust and make decisions. Holding up several size footballs and a soccer ball, Mitchell made the point that other cultures have different names for the game. When it comes to communicating, “we think people understand since they shake their head yes, but they’re hearing totally different things.” Here’s a few of Mitchell’s other points: · Is negative feedback evalu-

ated and shared frankly, and honestly or indirectly? Is criticism only shared in private “if at all?” or in front of a group? · How do leaders lead? Does the boss have to be the “smartest person in the room” or is “the best boss a facilitator among equals?” · Is trust based on “what you do or who you are?” · How do you argue in your office? Are you confrontational or do you avoid conflicts? Mitchell asked everyone to raise their hand to express their personal style, based on their self-evaluation. That got people thinking. His final subject was “deciding”: By consensus or top-down. “Figure out how you’re going to make decisions, so people feel embraced by your decisions,” he said. “When does a leader need to lead? Some things don’t require consensus.” “If you want a good team,” he concluded, “you have to know your people and know yourself first.”

Boca Raton Historical Society Unveils 22nd Annual Holiday Ornament Honoring Yamato Colony Legacy Boca Raton, FL – The Boca Raton Historical Society proudly presents the 22nd annual commemorative holiday ornament, a tribute to the legacy of Boca Raton’s Yamato Colony. Designed by esteemed local artist, Barbara Montgomery O’Connell, this exquisite ornament celebrates the remarkable history of this pioneering Japanese settlement. “The design for this beautifully crafted ornament was graciously donated by Barbara, who was inspired by historical information and photos from our archives,” said Mary Csar, Executive Director of the Boca Raton Historical Society. “This 22nd installation is a lasting reminder of the Yamato Colony’s unique history and contributions to South Florida.” In 1905, a group of young men from Japan arrived in South Florida with dreams of creating a new life by farming on the frontier. They christened their village “Yamato,” pronounced “YA-ma-toe,” which is an ancient name for Japan. The colony was home to 35-50 residents and was headquartered at what is now Dixie Highway at Yamato Road in Boca Raton. Most of the residents sold their land during the land boom of the 1920s, and the remain-

All proceeds will support the Boca Raton Historical Society and The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum’s ongoing projects, preserving and promoting the rich history of the city. The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum is the home of the Boca Raton Historical Society, whose mission is to collect, preserve, and present information and artifacts relevant to the past and evolving history of Boca Raton and to maintain a visible role in education and advocacy of historic preservation in the community. Nurturing Sustainability in Education, Florida Power & Light’s Annual Symposium at Manatee Lagoon

Riviera Beach, FL – In a world where environmental consciousness is paramount, the importance of instilling sustainability and conservation values in the next generation cannot be overstated. To this end, Florida Power & Light (FPL) hosted the Third Annual Sustainability Symposium at Manatee Lagoon. This unique event brought together educators and organizations dedicated to sustainability and conservation, empowering teachers with the tools and knowledge to incorporate these crucial topics into their curricula. Held on November 1, 2023, in Riviera Beach, Florida, the Sustainability Symposium was a hands-on learning event that offered Palm Beach County educators an exceptional opportunity to connect with various organizations committed to sustainability and conservation. The event focused on providing teachers with innovative approaches, resources, and best practices that they could integrate into their teaching curricula. The symposium, sponsored by FPL in partnership with the School District of Palm Beach County’s Environmental and Conservation Services Department, acted as a bridge between local educators and community partners. It encouraged collaboration and knowl-

edge sharing, facilitating a valuable exchange of ideas and strategies that can help create a greener and more sustainable future. One of the symposium’s key objectives was to equip educators with the skills and knowledge necessary to inspire the next generation of eco-conscious citizens. By fostering a deep understanding of sustainability and conservation principles, teachers can help students become environmental stewards who appreciate and protect the natural world. During the event, educators had the opportunity to hear from different community partners, including FPL. Jasmine Govan, a Community Relations Specialist with FPL, shared insights into FPL’s educational programs and scholarships. These programs not only benefit the local community but also provide teachers with valuable resources to enhance their classroom teachings. The Sustainability Symposium was a collective effort, with FPL, the School District of Palm Beach County’s Environmental and Conservation Services Department, and various community partners coming together to support and inspire Palm Beach County teachers. This collaborative spirit reflects the shared commitment to fostering a sustainable future for all.

Pap Corps modeled survivorship with turns on the runway By Marci Shatzman This fashion show wasn’t about clothes. More than 400 Pap Corps Champions for Cancer Research members and supporters packed a ballroom in Broken Sound Club for “Surviving in Style,” a celebration of beating cancer. Men and women, first joined by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center doctors, then taking their own turns, some dancing down the runway backed by oldies like “I Will Survive.” Each told their own story in a video. WPTV anchorman Michael Williams and Pap Corps publicist Kay Renz co-emceed the event, introducing Dr. Stephen Nimer, director of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and executive dean for research of University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “For the first time our first lady (Jill Biden) came by,” he said about her visit as the keynote speaker for October’s Cancer Survivorship Summit. “We are 81 million survivors, 5% of the U.S. population and we’re making great progress getting (patients) back to normal… We have 274 physicians, so we have incredible expertise.” The Pap Corps collectively has raised $110 million for cancer research, Nimer said about the all-volunteer fundraising organization with

more than 50 chapters. Some are open to membership and others to residents in communities, including many in suburban Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. Members support cancer research and have access to treatment at Sylvester. “What an inspiring and hopeful day,” Pap Corps CEO Sally Berenzweig said, saluting members for their generosity. “Only together can we create a world without cancer.” The women were outfitted by Nina Raynor Women’s Designer Boutique in Delray Beach, and the men by Raise the Bar Menswear in the Boca Center. Arrivals had time to bid on two rooms of silent auction items. The Pap Corps models were: Amy Shumrak, Brenda Rosenthal, Dan and Vita Goldberg, Deena Gross, Donald Porges, Ephraim Likerman, Harvey Finkel, Jeanne Brennan, Joel Horowitz, Lorrie Landsberg, Nancy Winn, Joe Moses, Paulette Sonnenstein, Penny Schuler, Joe Moses, Rayna Becker, Rhona Leff, Ruth Jatkoff, Sharon Seidner and Stacey Brumel. Young cancer survivor Jake Duenas and his mom took a runway turn, too. Jake, 8, was among 30 Hall of Heroes posters that included both survivors and in-memoriams. Event co-chairs were Joyce Brett and Beverly Berkowitz. Board chair Susan Dinter did the welcome and introductions.
