DeVita was nominated by the Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum. In 1995, she chaired the Woman Volunteer of the Year luncheon and fashion show. This year, 42 women from nonprofits around Palm Beach County were nominated for their dedication and expertise as volunteers. “Every year we are inspired by the accomplishments and commitment of the nominees.

Community Junior League of Boca Raton Names Joyce DeVita Woman Volunteer of the Year

Community Advisory Panel of Boca Raton Scheduled Its Third Town Hall Forum The Community Advisory Panel of Boca Raton is scheduled to host its third town hall forum on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 6:30 pm at the Downtown Library located at 400 NW 2nd Avenue. The eleven-member panel, each of whom was appointed by the Boca Raton City Council, hopes to hear from residents about quality of life issues in Boca Raton, including feedback on the response to Hurricane Irma by the City and other agencies. The informal town hall gathering will provide an opportunity for residents to meet and discuss ideas, views, concerns and initiatives about quality of life issues in Boca Raton. The panel will then organize the input received from the community and report results to the City Council for their consideration. Residents or individuals who work in Boca Raton are encouraged to attend the meeting and will have an opportunity to share their ideas with the panel and others. Comment cards will be

DeVita is a 31-year volunteer at the Boca Raton Historical Society & Museum (BRHS&M), has served on the Board of Trustees for 11 years and was President for an extended three-year term. During her tenure, she ensured the financial stability and growth of the BRHS&M. A force behind the Boca Bacchanal, she has chaired the event and Bacchanalia twice, and hosted Vintner Dinners for 10 years at her home. Her involvement includes numerous fundraising events and for four years she has chaired the Walk of Recognition. An accomplished chef, DeVita always contributes to the Museum’s hospitality. She strives to empower the

Joyce is a lifelong volunteer. In her youth, she dedicated herself to many Boca Raton organizations. Joyce is happily married to Thomas DeVita and has a 22-year old son, Adam, attending Columbia University. Her family also takes care of her 91-year old father, who has lived with them for 17 years. The JLBR’s luncheon once again featured Saks Fifth Avenue Boca Raton as the exclusive Fashion Sponsor. Fright Nights Returns for Sweet Sixteen As Halloween approaches, haunted houses all over the United States have neared their final preparations, the crew of Fright Nights among the chaos. The West Palm Beach haunted attraction has called South Florida Fairgrounds home for the past 16 years and has evolved each year since, becoming South Florida’s premier haunted attraction. The Boca Raton Tribune got a behind-the-scenes look at the haunted houses before opening night. “I started out as a set director, dresser, painter, actor, for Fright Nights in 2002,” said creative director Craig McInnis. “I have been here for 15 years and have veterans that have worked behind the scenes in haunted attractions for more than 20 years.” According to McInnis, the Fright Nights crew wears many hats, “most of us only stayed in one position for a couple seasons. Let’s say someone doesn’t like the way the makeup looks, they do it and everyone else says, ‘oh shoot you do makeup’ so the next year you’ll have a lot more on your plate.” McInnis is always looking to replace someone else, so they can move up to a higher position. “We’re always looking to find new talent. Those are the two main functions, designing and acting.” While there are not enough positions for everyone, fright nights sees more than a hundred potential actors at their cast calls, all hoping to become a scarer. While these paid positions are minimal and more selective it does not stop the influx of volunteers who are on standby in case anyone drops out. “We get about 80-100 volunteers, so there is a lot of desire to work here, both on the volunteer side and the paid side because it’s a once in a lifetime experience,” said McInnis. “Some people that have done it, have been hooked ever since.. like the veterans who have been here for more than 12 years.” There are four new haunts alone in the large shared warehouse. The haunts still somehow all share the space without interfering with each other. After walking through all four haunts, each with its own entrance and exit, nobody could have known what exactly was behind the other wall. Each haunt was relatively large as well, not a size a guest would expect from a shared warehouse. “The haunt you’re in is so loud you can’t tell and the best thing about that is, we used to think some of the light hitting the ceiling and bouncing into another haunt was a bad thing. It adds to the chaos,” stated McInnis. “If I hear screaming in the next house, it’s actually good for the house that’s next to it, because then people are thinking, ‘who’s screaming and why are they screaming’ so it adds to the energy.” At capacity, the warehouse can hold 400-500 individuals including the crew, and maybe even more stated McInnis. That many people simultaneously in the warehouse could be “a lot of energy, most of it is fear, so it feeds,” he said. Apart from being creative director, Craig McInnis also plays ‘Eggman’ a hillbilly clown that rides around on a bike on the midway. “I basically heckle people who try to heckle me,” he said. “The backstory

behind eggman is he was a short-order cook who got out of prison and he made great eggs, he started a traveling circus and became a rodeo clown. The story goes on, I have a long backstory, which I came up with because kids come up and ask me about it during the carnival. I’ve had 10 years to develop the guy.” The character was developed a few years ago when he designed one of his first houses, which was “The Clownhouse,” a murderous family of clowns, and thus Eggman was born. The crew does tries not to divulge too much about their haunts before opening night, a tactic to used to scare their guests more upon entry. This is not a relatively new tactic either according to McInnis, “It’s like what I did with the Smiths, I put ‘The Smiths’ and my tagline was ‘No Typical American Family?’ and I didn’t have clowns on the poster. So when the poor souls got into that room and saw mom cooking at the stove and she turns around with full-clown makeup, that’s when they found out.” No one can ever rule out clowns at Fright Nights and that is a given. “We make no apologies for the fact that we have clowns all the time because we know that’s a slam dunk,” he said. “There is always going to be 30-40% people who can’t even look at a clown.” “We have this big walker clown too that people despise.” The harness sits on the shoulder while the operator’s feet stay on the ground, so him and the apparatus are quite mobile. While the operator’s face is at chest level, the clown towers at 10 feet tall. They are known as “10 foot walkers” which patrol the carnival, interacting with guests. As for props, many very intricate props are bought at the TransWorld’s Halloween & Attraction Show, a popular marketplace for the haunted house industry, which takes place in St. Louis annually. The crew also visits the Legendary Haunt Tour, a traveling tour that visits 2-3 haunted attractions each year that have achieved “legendary” status with the haunted attraction industry, the media and the public. Here the crew has the ability go behind the scenes of the haunt and learn what fellow haunters have to offer and start getting ideas for next year. At Fright Nights, the carnival is booked by the fairgrounds and although guests have the option to enjoy carnival rides, food, live music, and entertainment, the true essence of Fright Nights is the haunts according to the crew. “At the end of the day, the carnival is just a distraction and its a way to keep the lines somewhat manageable and have another thing people can kill time with,” McInnis shares. “But for us we’re addicted to this and making cool sets, walkthroughs, and scary characters, this what it’s all about in here, the haunted houses.” Budget does not play a big factor in whether a haunt is “good” either. The actors are essential and if they cannot perform well, how nice or big the set is will not matter. “Whether you have a ten million dollar budget or a fifty thousand dollar budget, it still boils down to whether or not the actors are convincing and do what they are supposed to do,” he said. “That’s what we try to focus on.”

Are Boca Residents Happy with their Leadership? It appears Boca Raton residents are satisfied with their elected leadership as no one has indicated they will challenge the incumbents in next year’s election. Although we are five months away from the March 13 municipal election, Council members Jeremy Rodgers and Robert Weinroth could likely retain their seats on the dais as no one has yet thrown a hat in the race. If someone was planning to run for one of the seats, he or she would need to start raising money now unless they plan to finance the campaign out of pocket or has a secret army of big check writers waiting in the wings. The official qualifying period for candidates begins at 8 a.m. Jan. 2 and ends at 5 p.m. Jan. 10. Weinroth, who recently held a campaign kickoff event, has been ramping up his campaign war chest before he announced his plans to seek reelection. He filed on June 1 for a full three-year term. To date, he has raised more than $60,000, of which nearly $26,000 was

brought in this period, according to his most recent report. Rodgers has raised about $20,000, which includes a $5,000 loan to himself. Congratulations are in order to local resident Christel Silver who has been appointed as 2018 National Association of Realtors President’s Liaison to Germany. Silver, the broker/owner of Silver International Realty, will be responsible for strengthening existing relationships and creating new opportunities within their assigned country. The goal is to promote the Realtor brand through International membership, education, products, services, and networking events as well as to drive business to Realtors. This is Silver’s second tour of duty as she served as the President’s Liaison to Germany from 2010 to 2014. The Urge to Contradict Have you ever witnessed persons who never accept what another is saying to them or to someone else who is part of the same conversation? It seems they have to contradict certain details, most of which add nothing to the accuracy to what is being conveyed. Whatever is stated about any issue, or reported from personal observation, whether seen on TV, or heard on the radio, some persons appear to have the incurable itch to challenge and contradict. These people want to be “precise” (so they tell us), but on matters which are totally inconsequential to what is

being shared. If one alludes to a day, week, or month, or whether the event being described occurred in the morning, afternoon, or evening, or if any other insignificant detail is offered, which that person disagrees with, the urge to contradict is immediately heard! When such things occur in my presence, or even when I am the one being challenged, the question that immediately comes to my mind is: What motivates one to be always contrary and persistently contradictory, sometimes even combative?

The only answers I’ve been able to find to such situations only point to one’s insecurity, arrogance, excessive competitiveness, or even some form of mental instability. Most of all, it should point to a conversation not worth maintaining! People are entitled to their personal opinions without having to interrupt a dialogue with another, and argue about unimportant issues which in no way alter the veracity of what is being communicated. The ultimate truthfulness of what is being related is absolute, and none of those insignificant details being

questioned can add or detract anything from the conversation. Too much extra detail seldom adds anything of significance to any issue being discussed. Throughout my life I’ve been one to stand for truth, convictions, and accuracy. Nevertheless, it’s not necessary to be a stickler to insignificant points, and unnecessary matters that won’t add any substance to a correct understanding of a narrative. The urge to contradict draws more negative attention to the challenger than subtracts any significance from the words of the one being challenged!

Boca Raton Firefighter Wins Three National Championship Titles

A Little School with a Big International Program

Boca Raton Firefighter/Paramedic Irena Elmstrom and her teammates placed first at US Nationals this past weekend gaining them the following titles; US National Co Ed tandem champions, Female tandem champions and Female relay champions. Irena and her teammates are gearing up towards the Firefighter Combat Challenge World Championships held from October 23rd – 28th in Louisville, KY. They will compete for 5 days and the girls hope to defend their standing World Record in the female relay.

Since its inception in 2014 the French American International School of Boca Raton (FAIS) has seen its student population grow over 200%. The little school initially started teaching through the 3rd grade, but now offers classes through 6th grade. The educational program is unique to Palm Beach County. Not only is FAIS a full immersion bilingual school in French and in English, but the school curriculum adheres not only to the US standards but to the French National Curriculum, which has a reputation of being rigorous and is used in schools around the world. The French American International School is the only French-bilingual School in Boca Raton and serves families from as far as Wellington to Fort Lauderdale. The students are not only taught French, in French, by qualified native Teachers, but the academic program is from France. Elementary subjects such as Math, Science, History, Geography and Civics are taught according to the French Department of Education. The American section of elementary subjects cover everything a student would be learning in any other American School, from Language Arts, Math to Social Studies. “We want our children to be not only bilingual, but academically on or above target should they go to another school, whether here or abroad,” says Director and Founder Celine Von May. Palm Beach School Board Approves Make-Up Days for Hurricane Irma School Board members unanimously approved three previously scheduled professional development days for teachers in the School District of Palm Beach County as make-up days for Hurricane Irma. The album“Pá Qué Más,” which was recorded and produced at Florida Atlantic University’s Hoot/Wisdom Recordings under the direction of FAU associate professor Alejandro-Sánchez Samper, has received a GRAMMY nomination in the “Best Folk Album” category for the 18th annual Latin GRAMMY Awards®. The album was one of five nominated in the folk category, and the winning album will be announced at the Latin GRAMMY Awards event on Thursday, Nov. 16 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. “Pá Qué Más,” which was recorded at FAU and released on June 29 through Hoot/Wisdom Recordings, is the second album from the Quinteto Leopoldo Federico to receive a Latin GRAMMY nomination. Their debut album, “Bogotá – Buenos Aires” received a Latin GRAMMY nomination in 2015 in the “Best Tango Category.” Although the Quinteto Leopoldo Federico is best known as a tango ensemble, this new album “Pá Qué Más” is a tribute to Colombian Andean Music. “I studied bandoneon [the accordion of tango] for five years in Buenos Aires and I love tango but I am also from Bogotá, Colombia and I had this crazy idea of envisioning Colombian Andean music, the music from our homeland using instruments of tango,” said Giovanni Parra, the director of the Quinteto Leopoldo Federico. The album was produced by Sánchez-Samper and Parra, as well as en-

gineered by Sánchez-Samper and FAU assistant professor Matt Baltrucki. Assistant engineers on the project are FAU instructor Rob Rimmington, FAU commercial music graduates Iván Beltrán, Carlos Patiño and Joel Iglesias, and FAU commercial music students Patrick Montanari and Chirs Moragne. “Most people when they think of the music of Colombia, they immediately think of Shakira and Carlos Vives,” said Sanchez-Samper. “Colombia has a rich variety of musical styles and although much emphasis has been placed on the popular music of the coastal region of Colombia, in recent years there has been a significant revival and interest in the music of the Andes region of Colombia. I am thrilled that the voting members of the Latin Recording Academy have recognized this album through this nomination.” Hoot/Wisdom Recordings is part of the Commercial Music Program in the Department of Music in FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. It is a student-run record label where students are involved in all aspects of the label, including songwriting, choreography, production, engineering, recording services, video services, promotion and marketing, talent scouting, promotions and marketing, web site management, newsletter production, finance, legal issues, and accounting. Hoot Wisdom was established in 2002 and has produced 28 albums to date.

Events, previously postponed due to the preparation, impact and cleanup after the storm are now coming back on line making for a very busy calendar. • We attended the Research Park at Florida Atlantic University’s third annual awards celebration on Wednesday, October 4th at The Addison Restaurant. The awards recognized distinguished contributions to the Research Park’s mission to create and sustain the ideal environment for innovation and invention, maximizing the academic and entrepreneurial talent and regional resources in South Florida to accelerate economic development and prosperity. The award recipients for 2017 were: • Distinguished Researcher: Ken Dawson-Scully, Ph.D. is currently a tenured associate professor in the Department of Biological Sciences in FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science; • Distinguished Entrepreneur: Robert S. Flippo, who has worked in both start-up environments as well as Fortune 500 companies over the last 16 years; • Distinguished Leader: Jeff Atwater, who recently began his new role as vice president for strategic initiatives and chief financial officer at Florida Atlantic University; and • Distinguished Organization: Boca Raton Airport Authority, which manages the Boca Raton Airport which is a major economic engine and asset to both Boca Raton and all of South Florida. • The Junior League of Boca Raton held its 30th Annual Woman Volunteer of the Year (WVOY) Luncheon on Thursday, October 5, at the beautiful Boca Raton Resort & Club. A while back, my wife and I visited a restaurant and later filled out a survey about our experience there. In completing the questionnaire, we were automatically entered in a contest with a monetary reward. To our surprise, we were notified we had won and weeks later received a check in the mail. It was not for a huge amount, but we put the unanticipated money to good use. This prompted me to wonder what it would take to truly feel rich. What if you won a huge prize in the lottery? Or if you discovered you were an heir to a wealthy relative, and that person had left you a large inheritance? Or if someone unexpectedly showed up at your door and announced you had won a major sweepstakes? Would any of those make you feel rich? Many people believe that if somehow they were to come into a huge amount of money, they would become truly rich and all their problems would suddenly be resolved. But would they? We can all recall news accounts about famous, extremely wealthy people who have experienced great difficulties in life despite their riches. Some of the wealthiest nations in the world are beset by great societal problems, despite their affluence. It seems that money is not necessarily the cure-all for serious struggles. Someone has said if given a choice between having money or not having money, they would definitely opt for having money. I think we all would agree. But is money, property, or a hefty investment portfolio the source of true riches – or is it something else? And how can we succeed in acquiring these riches?

The Bible offers some observations: Material wealth – as well as the lack of it – can be stumbling blocks. In terms of money and material possessions, we may struggle with not having what we need. But having too much can also create problems: “…give me neither poverty nor riches,but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God” (Proverbs 30:8-9). In the pursuit of tangible wealth, there never is “enough.”There is something about wealth that fails to convince us that we have enough of it – even the richest people will tell you there is always room for “just a little bit more.” “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 5:10). “The leech as two daughters. ‘Give! Give!’ they cry” (Proverbs 30:15). Knowing and acting upon the truth is a path to true wealth. Embracing the truth God provides in the Scriptures can enrich more than anything the physical world can offer. “I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches” (Psalm 119:14). Our use of material resources can be a test. Perhaps our attitude toward wealth and how we use what we have can serve as a strong indicator of our character, as well as our reliability as stewards of what has been entrusted to our care. “So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?” (Luke 16:11). Boca Raton Football Club is excited to announce the signing of Kevyn McFarlane for the 2018 Season. The versatile center mid and leftback comes to Boca Raton FC from San Antonio FC of the United Soccer League (USL), where he played last season. Before his time in San Antonio, McFarlane had a stint with the Rochester Rhinos. “Kevyn brings a high-level mentality to the team,” said president Douglas Heizer. “I’m proud to have a player of Kevyn’s pedigree on our squad, it just goes to show that Boca Raton FC continues to attract the best players available.” A native from Jamaica, McFarlane played college soccer at Eastern Florida State. “I’m excited to join Boca Raton

FC for the 2018 season,” said McFarlane. “Boca Raton FC has a great coaching staff, and a professionally-ran organization where I can see it benefiting me as I continue to grow my game.” The 22-year-old debuted for Boca Raton FC in the 4-3 U.S. Open Cup victory over Hurricanes FC and already has registered an assist for his new club. “That’s the kind of player Kevyn is,” added Heizer. “He took advantage of his chances and was able to already make a mark on the team. Lynn Baseball Alum Tommy Kahnle, New York Yankees Advance to ALCS

Lynn University baseball alum Tommy Kahnle and the New York Yankees advanced to the American League Championship Series following a 5-2 game-five victory over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night at Progressive Field. The Yankees won the fivegame series, 3-2, and will face off with the Houston Astros in a best-of-seven round for the American League pennant. Kahnle played a crucial role in helping the Yankees advance, as he pitched 2.2 perfect innings of baseball in the American League Division Series, retiring all eight batters that he faced, five via strikeout. The former Fighting Knight picked up a two-inning save in game four at Yankee Stadium after working out of a two-on, nobody-out jam in the eighth inning. “It’s really nice to see someone who has had to work so hard in his professional career—going up and down [between the minors and MLB], changing teams—to be able to have the success that he’s having,” said Rudy Garbalosa, head coach of the Fighting Knights’ baseball program. “He was meant for those tight moments and high-pressure situations. It brings back some great memories of him in a Lynn uniform in the postseason, having a lot of success, enjoyment and energy in those situations. It’s great to see him continue to have the success that he’s earned and worked hard for.” The ALDS pitted a pair of Sunshine State Conference foes against each other once more, as Kahnle toed the rubber against former Barry Buccaneer Yan Gomes. Kahnle retired Gomes on a groundout in the eighth

inning of game two, marking only the second time the two had faced off at the MLB level. Both players competed against one another in SSC action in 2009, with Gomes going 2-for-3 with a pair of exta-base hits off Kahnle. In his two years with the Blue and White, Kahnle helped lift the Fighting Knights to unprecedented heights. He powered Lynn on the mound in relief to the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship and was named the South Region and National Tournament Most Outstanding Player. He posted a 1-0 record, five saves, 0.00 earned-run average and 12 strikeouts in 12.2 innings of work in the postseason as a redshirt freshman. As a sophomore, Kahnle returned in a starting role and led the Fighting Knights in ERA, strikeouts and opponent’s batting average. He tossed the program’s third no-hitter— the first in 11 years—and second by just one pitcher, with a 7-0 victory over Saint Leo on March 13, 2010. He struck out seven batters in the win. Kahnle was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the annual Major League Baseball Rule 5 Draft in June of 2013, making his Major League debut the following season. He became the third player in Sunshine State Conference history to be picked in the Rule 5 Draft and first since 2005. The hardthrowing right-hander was traded from Colorado to the Chicago White Sox following the 2015 season, where he spent all of 2016 and the first half of the 2017 season before being traded to the Yankees with David Robertson and Todd Frazier in July.

Florida Atlantic Names Student Athletes of the Week Florida Atlantic University named Devin Singletary and Sydney Nemtuda student-athletes of the week, for the week of Oct. 2. Singletary, known as “Motor,” carried the ball 24 times for the Owls Saturday night versus Middle Tennessee. He tallied 133 of the team’s 252 yards on the ground. He averaged 5.5 yards per carry and recorded his fourth contest with over 100 yards this season. The sophomore tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns in the 38-20 win over the Blue Raiders. Singletary was named CUSA Co-Offensive Player of the Week Nemtuda, from Algonquin, Illinois, has seen her playing time steadily increase since the beginning of the season and just registered her best weekend

of the year. Against FIU on Friday night, she registered 10 kills and 10 digs for her first career double-double. She added three service aces, two assists and two blocks. In FAU's match against Charlotte on Saturday, she was even better with 19 kills and 16 digs for her second straight double-double. The performance earned Nemtuda the C-USA Freshman of the Week award. Football will head to Old Dominion to take on the Monarchs Saturday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcasted live on STADIUM. Volleyball will continue C-USA play with two road matches, against Rice on Friday, Oct. 6 and Middle Tennessee on Sunday, Oct. 8. First serve on Friday night is set for 7 p.m.
