Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Earns Ninth Consecutive Reaccreditation with Prestigious Excelsior Status

In July 2024, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office underwent a thorough assessment conducted by a team of four experienced law enforcement professionals, selected by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. The assessors, trained specifically for such evaluations, spent three days reviewing the Sheriff’s Office’s policies, procedures, practices, and facilities to ensure compliance with 235 established standards.

The assessment involved a comprehensive review, including document inspections, interviews with personnel, and a detailed examination of vehicles and equipment across multiple locations in Palm Beach County. Upon completion, the assessment team leader submitted a report that highlighted the Sheriff’s Office’s flawless compliance with the Commission’s standards. The report concluded with a unanimous recommendation for reaccreditation with Excelsior status, an achievement that reflects the department’s unwavering commitment to law enforcement excellence.

On October 3rd, the Commission voted in favor of reaccreditation, marking the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office’s ninth consecutive accreditation since first receiving this honor in 2000. This year also marked the department’s fourth Excelsior law enforcement accreditation award.

Excelsior Recognition is awarded to agencies that have successfully completed five consecutive accreditations spanning at least 15 years, demonstrating a sustained commitment to law enforcement excellence and adherence to the highest standards. Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and the dedicated team of sworn and civilian professionals were instrumental in this achievement, ensuring top-tier service and security for the residents of Palm Beach County.

FAITH

Make the Right Decision, Not Just a Fast One

“Daniel went at once to see the king and requested more time to tell the king what the dream meant.” Daniel 2:16 (NLT)

When you’re asked to do something that seems impossible, start by refusing to panic and by getting all the facts. Then, you need to ask for more time.

Why? Because your biggest temptation in the middle of a crisis is to be impulsive. You’re typically not thinking rationally. You’re thinking emotionally. You may be tempted to make a quick decision.

But quickness is not the most important thing. You may want to get it over with and make a fast decision, because that seems easier at the time. But that doesn’t mean it will be a good decision. It takes nothing at all to make a quick choice. It takes a lot of wisdom to make the right one.

A wrong decision is wrong, no matter how quickly you make it. So step back, take a deep breath, calm down, and talk to God. Daniel did this when the king asked him to interpret a dream, just after the king ordered the killing of the first few people who tried but

failed to explain what it meant: “Daniel went at once to see the king and requested more time to tell the king what the dream meant” (Daniel 2:16 NLT).

Daniel gives us a great model for dealing with a high-pressure situation: He asked for more time and then talked to God about it.

Before you do anything else, get God’s perspective on the issue. “A man is a fool to trust himself! But those who use God’s wisdom are safe” (Proverbs 28:26 TLB).

HEIZER

You’re more likely to make a better decision when you don’t rush yourself into making a quick decision. Don’t let the world convince you that you have to keep up a frantic pace—especially when the stakes are high. You don’t always have to make a quick decision.

It’s more important to make the right decision. And to make the right decision, you need God’s wisdom. You’ll get wisdom from God when you ask him for it and spend time with him and in his Word.

With Variable Labor, Make Culture A Constant

Do you give or receive job performance reviews where you work? Or have you ever been given such a review in another job? Imagine having your boss or supervisor meet with you for a performance review and describe your work with terms like, ‘mediocre,’ ‘adequate,’ ‘so-so,’ or ‘doing just enough to get by.’ How would you feel?

At best you would probably realize that hoped-for promotion probably will not be coming very soon, or that you should not expect to receive a substantial bonus based on how your work is assessed. At worst, it might be wise to start looking for another job –the sooner the better.

Watching the recent Summer Olympics, with thousands of athletes competing from well over 100 different countries, it was evident that mediocre and doing just enough to get by were not part of their mindsets. Even though most of the athletes knew they would not be returning home with gold, silver or bronze medals, they still wanted to do their best to represent and bring honor to their nations.

If one phrase could have been used to describe those hard-working, determined Olympians, it was “the pursuit of excellence.” Whether it was striving for precision on the diving boards; performing intricate and demanding routines in gymnastics; trying to run the fastest on the track; churning through the water in swimming events; or demonstrating amazing feats of strength and dexterity on the field, it was obvious the competitors had invested countless hours preparing for their events. They understood it is not good to perform on the global stage and embarrass themselves.

What if we each took the same approach to our work? We might not be vying for international acclaim, or for gold, silver or bronze medals. However, pursuing excellence in what we do – whether making sales presentations, designing a website, conducting a meeting, or emptying trash cans – is certain to gain the attention of people we work with, especially our bosses. Here are a few of the things the Bible says about cultivating a work ethic of excellence:

Excellence and hard work are rec-

ognized. There are many talented people in the workplace, but what sets some apart from the rest is their commitment to carrying out their responsibilities with excellence, going the extra mile when necessary. “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men” (Proverbs 22:29).

Work can fulfill a higher purpose. When we go to work, our intent is usually to satisfy the expectations of the persons that serve as our bosses and supervisors. But in the Scriptures, we are exhorted to realize our work should aim even higher than that. “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s fi eld, God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9).

Excellent work can lead to greater responsibilities. We might be tempted to think, ‘When I get an important job, then I will really work hard and show what I can do.’ Even if your current job seems unimportant, it might be a training ground for much greater, more fulfilling responsibilities. In a parable, Jesus Christ told about pleasing a demanding boss: “’Well done, my

good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities’” (Luke 19:17).

Did you watch any of the Summer Olympics? Some portions might not have interested you, but what did you think of the amount of time, energy, effort and sacrifice the athletes expended for the honor of representing their nations in the Games?

Diabetes and Your Feet, What You Need to Know

(StatePoint) Foot ulcers develop in about 15% of the 25 million Americans living with diabetes and are a top cause of hospitalization. These ulcers can lead to serious complications, such as infection and amputation. According to foot and ankle surgeons, there are steps you can take to prevent complications and keep your feet healthy, as well as breakthrough treatments that are saving limbs, restoring mobility and improving lives.

“The majority of lower-extremity amputations are preceded by a reoccurring foot sore or an ulcer that won’t heal,” says John S. Steinberg, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member and Past President of the American College of

Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “Patients do best when they take charge of their foot health with the help of a foot and ankle surgeon.”

The surgeon members of ACFAS are sharing some important insights into preventing foot ulcers associated with diabetes and treating them if they do occur.

Make these precautions part of your foot care routine:

• Inspect feet daily using a fl ashlight and mirror to see the bottoms of your feet.

• Moisturize dry, cracking feet to prevent sores. Use powder to control moisture that can result in blisters.

• To prevent injury, wear protective, well-fitting shoes and socks at all times, even in the house. Change socks daily and more often if your feet get wet or sweaty. Avoid socks with holes or seams. Sometimes diabetic shoes are prescribed to avoid pressure and rubbing on the feet.

• Get regular foot exams from a foot and ankle surgeon, which can reduce amputation risk by 45-85%. The

surgeon can also screen feet for loss of protective sensation.

• Manage your diabetes. Out-ofcontrol blood sugar levels can lead to nerve cell damage, making it harder to detect foot problems.

Look for telltale signs that an ulcer may be developing:

• Swelling. The foot or ankle may look puffy or engorged and larger than the other.

• Temperature. Cold feet might mean a circulatory issue, whereas hot feet might mean infection.

• Color changes. Redness and even other colors might appear before an ulcer forms.

• Calluses. If a callus changes colors or develops dark, “dried blood” colored spots, it may be time to have a foot and ankle surgeon offer a proper diagnosis.

Ask your foot and ankle surgeon about innovative treatments: If you do experience a non-healing ulcer, talk to your foot and ankle surgeon right away about innovative technologies that stimulate healing.

Groundbreaking approaches include stem cell therapy, the use of bioengineered skin substitutes to accelerate growth of healthy skin, and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to promote healing and enable healthy, new tissue to grow. Today, foot and ankle surgeons rarely do a skin graft without NPWT. Skin grafting for foot ulcers has also advanced. Surgeons now use advanced reconstructive surgery and grafting techniques to promote wound healing and decrease wound recurrence.

The success rate of these advanced therapies is high, providing substantial improvement over treatments of the not-too-distant past, when doctors would clean and bandage the wound and hope for the best.

“Thanks to the many advances in diabetic foot care, patients today are having simpler surgeries, avoiding amputations, and getting back to everyday life sooner than ever before,” says Dr. Steinberg.

For more information or to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts.org, the patient education website of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Digital Decluttering Tips for Your Connected Life

(StatePoint) Nowadays, organizing your digital possessions, such as beloved photos and videos, and backing up important data, like school and business records, is just as important as keeping your physical surroundings orderly.

Why is backing up data so important? Because so many things can go wrong: from spilling water on your laptop to losing your phone to experiencing a natural disaster. Plus, there’s cybersecurity to think about -- a PC infected by malware is a common cause of data loss.

If you’re like most people and have precious data you want to protect, a common rule of thumb for keeping important files from disappearing forever is the 3-2-1 rule:

• Have three total copies of your data.

• Save copies on two different types of media or devices.

• Keep one backup copy off-site in case of disaster.

“Whether it’s a senior thesis, your business plan or cherished family photos and videos, if it’s important to you, back it up,” says Nitin Kachhwaha, director of product management, Western Digital. “Having a practical 3-2-1 backup strategy in place is essential to providing peace of mind and preserving your files for the future.”

If you’re looking for storage solutions to back up your data, one great option is the My Book desktop drive from WD, which is designed to complement your life with massive space to store your files, ranging from 4TB to 22TB of capacity. An alternative option from the WD brand is the popular and portable My Passport Ultra hard drive that comes with storage up to 6TB, which is the world’s highest capacity 2.5-inch drive. This is a great

storage companion for those with an onthe-go lifestyle, equipped with password protection for an extra level of security. (Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. Download and installation required. Terms and conditions apply. User account registration may be required.)

Both come with automatic backup software so you can maintain peace of mind knowing that you are helping keep your data safe. For more information and backup solution ideas, visit https:// wd.com.

These days, decluttering doesn’t just refer to nixing household clutter and cleaning out closets, it also includes organizing your digital life by helping to protect your treasured and sensitive data.

It will also present annual awards to selected artists within BRiC’s ‘Art on BRiC Walls’ walking art exhibit, which features rotating works from regional organizations and institutions like Florida Atlantic University, Arts Warehouse, and Boca Raton Museum of Art.

Ample free parking is available onsite. In the event of inclement weather, a rain date is set for Friday, November 22, at the same time — allowing for uninterrupted enjoyment of the festivities. Entry to the event is FREE with the donation of a new, unwrapped toy or by contributing to The Spirit of Giving, the event’s charitable partner for the past nine years. A VIP experience is available for purchase. For $60 per adult and $16 per child (16 years and under), patrons will be granted access to the VIP hospitality tent, which includes multiple open bars, a variety of hors d’oeuvres, a carving

station, and special activities. Inside, the VIP “Kids Corner” will provide treats and beverages, and a special “Make Your Own S’mores” station. Additional entertainment includes face painting, glitter tattoos, and a live illustrator. All proceeds from the VIP ticket sales will go to the Junior League of Boca Raton, an organization devoted to promoting volunteerism, empowerment, and community betterment through the leadership of trained volunteers. Space is limited, and the tent typically sells out quickly, so attendees are encouraged to secure their tickets early.

“CP Group takes pride in the legacy this event has built over the years. Our tree lighting has become a beloved tradition that brings our community together but serves as a meaningful way to kick off the season of giving,” said Giana Pacinelli, Director of Communications at CP Group. “We’re honored to welcome families, friends, and neighbors as we celebrate the spirit of the holidays and give back to our local community.”

New to this year’s charitable efforts, the event will also raise funds for CPG Cares, a 501(c)(3) founded by CP Group members to support charitable organizations in the communities where the company operates. The event’s iconic inflatable candy canes will be available for purchase, with proceeds from those sales and a portion of cash bar sales going directly to CPG Cares. Kids with VIP tickets will also receive a candy cane as part of their experience.

What Robin Roberts Said in Boca

Inspired by the packed turnout and Go Pink’s early detection message, “Good Morning America” co-anchor got a standing ovation from her Boca Raton luncheon audience. No surprise.

Roberts referenced surviving and thriving through her 2007 breast cancer and 2012 bone marrow cancers, and stayed upbeat at this 20th “Celebration of Survivorship” during Breast Cancer Awareness month. Roberts advised newly diagnosed patients to “focus on solutions, not the problem.” After losing a friend to colon cancer, she changed doctors when her appointment wasn’t scheduled for months. After a mammogram didn’t diagnose a suspicious lump, an ultrasound detected a tumor. “Your mind just goes blank,” she said. “I was 46 at the time. Don’t do the math!”

Roberts, who turns 64 on Nov. 23, was obviously taken by the group of survivors who told their age and how long they were in remission earlier on

stage at The Boca Raton. Kidding about their candor, “I’m moving to Boca,” she joked.

But despite the serious subject matter, Roberts turned out to be the perfect

celebrity speaker to deliver the message to insist on mammograms and early detection. “You fight the fight it’s going to be,” she said, telling the crowd how she ditched her wig and “bounced down the runway” at an event, despite “feel-

ing anything but beautiful” when she lost her hair after treatment.

Roberts saluted all caregivers, and quoted her mother. “Everybody’s got something,” she said. “Fear not!”

Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation presents this event, and president Mark Larkin emceed the proceedings with Go Pink chair Carrie Rubin. Introducing Bridge to Care, Maureen Mann, vice president of Lynn Cancer Institute and Lynn Women’s Health and Wellness Institute, called the program a “human GPS for all patients.”

Shoutouts went to Christine E. Lynn, the hospital’s board of directors chair, and Freyda Burns, who has presented the celebrity speakers for all 20 years. Auctioneer Neil Saffer conducted a Call to the Heart fundraiser that topped the event’s $400,000 goal. Media sponsors were The Boca Raton Tribune and Modern Luxury Palm Beach.

“I believe in the power of music to uplift and inspire, but I also know that the true impact can reach much further than the stage, Together, we can make a lasting difference beyond the music,” says Silver. “Arts Garage has been a cornerstone of our community, and I’m eager to give back by supporting Marjorie Waldo and her fantastic team. I am deeply grateful for everything they do for the arts in South Florida.”

More about Deborah Silver:

Deborah Silver’s sensational singing style has garnered high praise from the experts:

+ Quincy Jones: “Deborah Silver’s strong and sultry vocals are seductive

and soul soothing. Whatever she sings she owns, making every note matter! One listen and you know… Deborah Silver is the real deal.”

She has recorded a string of duets with celebrated artists including Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers, Jazz icon Diane Schuur, Jack Jones, Freddy Cole, Ronnie Millsap, Pam Tillis, Steve Tyrell , Ann Hampton Callaway, Tony Orlando and Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel.

Her 2020 album, Glitter & Grits produced by industry legend Ray Benson, features musicians from his multi-Grammy award winning band Asleep at the Wheel. Glitter & Grits reinforced Silver’s immense versatility, as an artist taking us on a journey from jazz to the unique Western swing style dynamically bringing these songs to life. This album was voted Broadway World’s Best Commercial Recording, landed the #1 spot on both Traditional Jazz and Western Swing Charts, and crossed over to become #3 on the

Weekly Top 50 Country Album Chart.

Her earlier album, 2016’s The Gold Standards, produced by Steve Tyrell with stunning arrangements by Alan Broadbent, was an out-of-the-box smash reaching #1 on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Album chart while landing at #1 on the Billboard Heatseeker Album chart and the #2 spot on the overall Billboard Jazz Album chart.

Silver’s dazzling stage performances in clubs, concert venues, and with symphony orchestras are reminiscent of a past golden and glamorous era. She’s performed at countless clubs and performing arts centers around the country, including Jazz at Lincoln Center, Birdland, Blues Alley, 54 Below, Catalina Jazz Club, The Colony’s Royal Room, and Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.
