Students from B’nai Torah Congregation Volunteer at Lucky Horse Sanctuary as Part of Mitzvah Month

It’s Mitzvah Month all November at B’nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton! Today, more than 50 congregants and students spent the afternoon raking leaves and volunteering at Lucky Horse Sanctuary in Coconut Creek. The mission of Lucky Horse Sanctuary is to provide trauma specific animal assisted mental health counseling services to those suffering from traumatic related experiences.

Mitzvan Month, a month-long philanthropy campaign now in its fourth year, offers everyone daily opportunities to volunteer, donate, support and overall do good in the community.

“We started Mitzvah Day to allow people in our community to see a sampling of organizations and nonprofits in our area,” said Summer Faerman, Director of the TLC Program at B’nai Torah Congregation. “There are opportunities for all ages, stages and interests to participate in meaningful mitzvah projects that will make a big difference. No matter what your interests are, or what opportunities inspire you, there is a mitzvah opportunity for you.”

Mitzvah activities are being offered throughout the rest of the month of November, and include the following:

Shabbat Experience at the Weisman Center and JARC Florida: Join seniors

at the Weisman Center in Delray for Shabbat or adults with developmental disabilities at JARC.

A Mitzvahis any of the 613 commandments that Jewish people are encouraged to observe, and more generally refers to any good deed.

The ‘Mitzvah of Tzedakah’ – giving to charity – is one of the most important and is a common component of synagogue life. At B’nai Torah, the commitment to acts of Mitzvot is a critically important focus. The TLC program was developed to teach the core Jewish value of Tzedakah – through learning and action – to people of all ages within the congregation. It was first founded in 2012 and has continued to grow in size and scope. This flagship Mitzvah program touches all areas of critical need including hunger, homelessness, literacy, elder care, vulnerable populations, special needs and more. Boca Raton Historical Society Hosts VIP Reception to Celebrate the Opening of Major Exhibition

BOCA RATON, FL (November 19, 2024) – The Boca Raton Historical Society welcomed distinguished guests, community leaders, and supporters to an exclusive VIP reception last week at The Schmidt Boca Raton History Museum to celebrate the opening of Boca Raton 1925-2025: Addison Mizner’s Legacy.

This highly anticipated exhibition, now open to the public through May 30, 2025, marks the city’s centennial by highlighting the visionary work of Addison Mizner and his profound influence on Boca Raton’s transformation into a world-renowned destination. Guests at the reception enjoyed a first look at the multimedia showcase, which features rare artifacts, photographs, maps, and immersive displays, including architectural pieces from Mizner Industries and other historical treasures.

The centerpiece of the exhibit spotlights Mizner’s iconic Cloister Inn, which evolved into The Boca Raton, a premier luxury resort. It also explores the enduring impact of Mizner’s archi-

tectural style on local neighborhoods, from Old Floresta to the Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club. Curated by Augustus Mayhew, a renowned cultural historian, the exhibit brings Mizner’s legacy to life with contributions from the Frederick Herpel Collection and other notable institutions.

The VIP reception was made possible with support from exhibit sponsors, including The Boca Raton, Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Discover the Palm Beaches, and Palm Beach County. Guests mingled while enjoying refreshments and previewing the exhibit that will captivate visitors throughout the centennial celebrations.

To Become Wise, Spend Time with Wise People

If you want to be wise, invite wise people into your life.

You don’t need a lot of friends. You don’t need to be popular. You just need a few good friends who build you up, not tear you down—who are wise, not fools.

If you hang around with fools, that’s what you become. But if you spend time with wise people, you’ll grow wiser. It’s like the old saying: “If you want to soar with the eagles, you can’t run with the turkeys.”

People grow best in community.

You can’t grow to spiritual maturity by yourself. God designed us to need each other. Wisdom shows up primarily in relationships.

You could become a monk and move to the top of a mountain and spend your life in silence and reading books; you would grow in knowledge, but you wouldn’t grow in wisdom. You can hold advanced academic degrees but still have your relationships fall apart; being educated doesn’t necessarily mean you’re wise.

The Bible says in Proverbs 13:20, “Spend time with the wise and you will

become wise, but the friends of fools will suffer” (NCV). If I stand on the edge of a stage, and I’m trying to pull you up while you’re trying to pull me down, which is easier to do? It’s always easier for somebody to pull you down than pull you up. But people who pull you down are not your true friends. Real friends pull you up. They encourage you in your pursuit of godly wisdom by offering their own.

Talk It Over

Who are the people closest to you? How are they encouraging you in spiritual growth and wisdom? Or, on the

other hand, how are they distracting you from learning to live wisely?

What wise, mature Christian would you like to cultivate a deeper relationship with so you can grow in wisdom? What younger believer would you like to invest time with so you can share what you’ve learned already?

Why is it more important to have a few deep relationships than to have a lot of friends?

The Power Of Speaking The Right Words

We live in unprecedented times. The airwaves are filled with words, as is the Internet. Thanks to social media, anyone with the capacity for talking can post any information, ideas and opinions they choose to present. Because TV news is now 24/7, there is no end to commentary and expositions on the day’s news and events. The round-theclock hours must be filled with sound, not silence. As a result, we could say that never in the history of humankind has so much been said by so many –about so little.

One consequence of this is that people so eager to speak often fail to pause and consider what they are speaking. Positive or negative, gentle or harsh, they open their mouths and let the words fly out. It reminds me of Proverbs 10:19 which warns, “When there are many words, wrongdoing is unavoidable. But he who restrains his lips is wise.”

But even if we choose not to get caught up in the communications chaos of social media and limit our exposure

to the rantings that are so common in the mass media, we still are not immune to the power of words for good or for ill. We can be the perpetrators or victims (or both) of words carelessly used.

Email is a wonderful and rapid way of communicating. But if we do not exercise caution by first reviewing and reconsidering what we have written before hitting “Send,” we might regret it later. Especially if what we write is in a moment of anger or high emotion. The same can be true when leaving voicemail messages or texts on our smartphones. What sounded good and fitting at first may cause considerable distress later.

With effective communicating so essential for the 21st century business and professional world, but at the same time so challenging, here are some principles from the Bible that can be helpful to us:

Choose our words wisely. I have known people who were more than eager to give others a piece of their

mind that they could not afford to lose. I must admit to times when I was guilty of that myself. Considering in advance the impact of the words we intend to say can determine whether they will be beneficial or destructive. “A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. Like an earring of gold or an ornament of fine gold is a wise man’s rebuke to a listening ear” (Proverbs 25:11-12).

Consider our words as tools for building up, not tearing down. In our world – and the marketplace in which we spend so much of our time – we find so much negativity, often involving words spoken and written with bad intentions. It is not necessary for us to contribute to that. By using words that lift up rather than tear down, we can make a significant difference. “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear” (Ephesians 4:29).

Counter words that are hurtful.

Have you ever watched someone after he or she has been the target of angry or vindictive words? Perhaps you have been one of them at times yourself. Knowing the pain and discomfort that hurtful words can cause, we should strive instead to offer words that heal, encourage and inspire. “Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Proverbs 12:18). Do not be part of the communications disease. Rather, strive to be part of the cure.

Reflection/Discussion Questions

What are your thoughts and reactions in general to what is being communicated these days on social media and through the mass media? How does what you hear and read affect your mood and attitudes as you proceed through a typical day?

Caregiving Youth Honors 3 and Founder

Alzheimer activist Pam Higer-Polani, fellow attorney Gary Lesser and Palm Beach County’s school district were honored at this year’s AACY’s Community Caregiver Awards Brunch. But the shoutouts, even from emcee CBS12’s morning anchor Matt Lincoln, went to founder and president Dr. Connie Siskowski. “There’s no organization helping these kids and no one else but Connie,” he said.

A former nurse, Siskowski was inspired by caring for her grandfather at 11. Based in Boca, but with an international reach, American Association of Caregiving Youth is still the only organization in the U.S. addressing what young students who care for family members face and need. Calling this often hidden population “reverse age discrimination through no fault of their own. Each child and family are unique. When you see a child pushing a wheelchair, think of what happens when they get home,” she said.

This year’s honorees appeared on video first and were introduced by AACY board chair Debralyn Belletieri, cochair Jeff Gordon, and program cochairs Althea Ceasor and Maria Levix.

They received heart awards for “going above and beyond” to significantly improve their community.

Keith Oswald, chief of equity and wellness, accepted in behalf of schools Superintendent Michael J. Burke. AACY works with and in Palm Beach County schools to identify and support young caregivers. He called the students “unsung heroes.” “Leadership starts at the top,” he said about Siskowski.

“You are truly one of my heroes,” Polani said in her remarks less than a week after her successful Brain Bowl fundraiser. “This is about children,” she added.

“Organizations like AAYC give me hope,” Lesser said. “What would happen to these kids if AACY didn’t exist?”

Appearing with his longtime AACY mentor Eliot Popper, Caregiving Youth speaker Marc-Charles Charlecine, now 22, told the crowd “Being a caregiver is hard.” He took care of his grandmother. But between AACY and Popper’s support, he went their Treasure Camp, got a Snow college scholarship, and is now mentoring Boys & Girls Club kids. “I couldn’t be the person I am today without Connie and Eliot,” he said.

The brunch opened with AACY’s special song sung by their own Heartfelt Harmony chorus, and a color guard from Olympic Heights’ High School’s Marine Corps NJROTC. Lincoln did the official fundraising call that included a CBS12 station tour for donations. Earlier Rabbi David Steinhardt did the benediction. Deputy Mayor Yvette Drucker and CRA Chair Fran Nachlas presented Siskowski with an official city proclamation for National Caregivers Month to wrap up the event at the Broken Sound Club. Among the longtime major sponsors were Allegiance Home Healthcare and AvalonBay Communities.

That’s because this holiday season, Sam’s Club’s private brand Member’s Mark is unveiling an innovative precooked Thanksgiving meal that is ready to serve in under two hours, priced under $100 for up to 10 people and available to be delivered. Crafted with mindfully made premium ingredients, the meal offers convenience without compromising quality, ensuring a stress-free, memorable and delicious Thanksgiving. your kitchen is organized and ready for the big day, and that guests feel comfortable and welcomed. Set the table and do any decorating you have planned the evening beforehand.

2. Save on Festive Flair: You can further reduce costs by going DIY with items like centerpieces and seasonal wreaths, or by shopping with retailers offering great value, such as Sam’s Club, which provides solutions for flowers, décor, wine and other hosting essentials.

3. Rely on Friends and Family: Even if you have the main meal covered, it’s still nice to get a little help from guests, who will likely ask if they can bring something. Don’t be shy about asking them to contribute an appetizer or beverage!

Boca Trying Out 26 Free Quickie Parking Spots

If you just want to run in for a takeout downtown Boca and don’t want to buy time on a parking meter or Park-

Mobile app, you’re in luck. Based on an unnamed business owner who said meters were impacting his business, the

city will offer 29-minute free parking spots on 26 spaces on Northeast 1st Avenue for the next three months… starting this week.

This is how it will work: Patrons can select the free rate at any meter on that street. ParkMobile app customers will still pay a 30-cent transaction fee. The free parking option will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during business hours. Expect signage in about two weeks.

What’s the objective of trying out this new downtown quick parking freebie. “To ensure our parking program supports downtown businesses by providing accessible parking for customers, maintaining ease of use, and avoiding excessive costs. As part of this goal,

we will test a short-term, no-cost parking option to facilitate quick visits,” said Steven Timberlake, special projects manager for the CRA, the special district downtown.

There’s a potential downside. “The loss is estimated at least 3%, or $2,100, based on current transaction data,” Timberlake added. “There is a risk that drivers may overstay or misuse the 29-minute free parking limit, potentially increasing the demand for enforcement. Additionally, there is no mechanism to prevent patrons from repeatedly using the free parking option.”

“Hopefully this move will affect other areas of it’s successful,” said Councilman Marc Wigder. Council also sits on the CRA.

Country Music Artist David Nail’s

“A

Campfire Christmas!” Tour to Make a Stop at The Studio at Mizner Park

BOCA RATON, FLORIDA –

Country music artist David Nail will bring his A Campfire Christmas!, with special guest Jacob Tolliver, to The Studio at Mizner Park, 201 W. Plaza Real, on Friday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m., as part of his 13-city tour. Nail will create a festive and intimate setting designed to transport audiences around a campfire as he performs holiday hits and reimagined Christmas classics alongside his well-known and timeless songs like “Let It Rain,” “Red Light” and “Nights on Fire.”

“My wife Catherine has begged me to do a Christmas tour for several years, and I guess the timing just felt right to finally grant her wish. I look forward to incorporating some timeless Christmas classics in with new music, as well as the normal songs you’re used to hearing! It’s gonna be a blast!” said Nail.

For tickets and more information, visit Calendar – The Studio at Miznerpark.

Hailing from Kennett, Missouri, David Nail is well-respected up and down Music Row. Some might even call him a “tour de force” as his songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled through much of his life. The GRAMMY-nominated multi-platinum singer/songwriter’s early releases, I’m About To Come Alive, The Sound Of A Million Dreams, I’m

A Fire and Fighter, ignited his reputation as an innovator and creative risk-taker yet left Nail feeling restless.

This led to the departure of the only record company home he’d ever known, MCA Nashville, where he’d formed friendships that endure even now. Through dealing with his own journey of mental illness and the feeling of needing to “rebel against what people expect you to be,” Nail began making his most “organic” work to date, David Nail & The Well Ravens, with Jason Hall and Andrew Petroff. That project liberated Nail and propelled him into his next adventure. Writing solo

for the next few months led to his debut solo independent EP Oh, Mother, a reflective piece of work. Of the title track, Rolling Stone noted that “the song creeps in like a sunrise — quiet, restrained cello and keys are the only underpinning for Nail’s powerful vocals at first. But then it slowly builds to something more massive and majestic.” That release was followed by Bootheel 2020 and Bootheel 2021, projects dedicated to the singer/songwriter’s hometown in the “bootheel” of Missouri. Nail plans on releasing more music, leaving behind any self-imposed restrictions. In Nail’s own words, “My philosophy has always been, I just hope to have a good enough

year that I can have a next year while staying as true to myself as I possibly can.” Find more at www.davidnail.com.

Jacob Tolliver is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist known for his energetic performances and genre-blending musical style. Hailing from Portsmouth, Ohio, Tolliver’s early mastery of the piano and love for classic rock ‘n’ roll shaped his artistic identity. Tolliver first gained widespread recognition in the Las Vegas production of “Million Dollar Quartet,” where his high-octane piano skills and dynamic stage presence made him a standout. Following this success, he had the rare opportunity to open on the road for Jerry Lee Lewis, further honing his craft and deepening his connection to the roots of rock ‘n’ roll. Now, Tolliver is moving in an exciting new direction, focusing on his original music.

His upcoming work blends the raw energy of rock with contemporary influences, creating a sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Tolliver’s genre-meshing style incorporates elements of pop, country, and blues, pushing the boundaries of traditional rock. As he continues to evolve as an artist, Tolliver is set to make a significant impact with his fresh take on classic sounds, carving out a unique place in the modern music scene. Symphonia’s Opening Concert in 20th Season

If you’re a big city transplant to Boca and think you’ll have to leave orchestral music behind, The Symphonia just opened its 20th season with Stravinsky.

With five more concerts to go through April, including a Holiday Pops, longtime maestro Alastair Willis told the audience to look forward to classics and music that might not be familiar. The chamber orchestra opened with a lush “Celebration Overture,” and moved to “Violin Concerto No. 5″ by Henri Vieuxtemps. Virtuoso violinist Andres Cardenes, now an artist-in-residence at Boca’s Lynn University, earned a second bow from the audience. Willis said composer Igor Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella Suite,” the music from his ballet, “was his first neoclassical piece.”

In lieu of a program, the names of the pieces, composers and even the movements were boldly projected above the stage.

Happy with the turnout for their first concert of the season, board president Sheldon Kwiat praised Willis, the principal conductor and artistic advisor. Appreciating classic music with a live orchestra, not just recordings, is often a matter of exposure, he said during the

The next concerts are in different venues, from the remastered acoustics in St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church, to The Studio at Mizner Park. Here’s a link to the dates, times, programs and tickets: https://thesymphonia.org/attend/ events/

The Holiday Pops Concert is 7 p.m. Dec. 7 in the open air Mizner Park Amphitheater. That’s ticketed too at https://app.arts-people.com/index. php?show=240516

The Symphonia also has a Meet the Orchestra program for kids during dress rehearsals the Saturday before the Sunday concerts.

Their Box Lunch Series is up close and personal during dress rehearsals the Fridays before their concerts. https:// thesymphonia.org/what-we-do/boxlunch-series/
