LETTER FROM OUR CHAIR
Choose to Challenge and Be Inspired It’s been more than a year since the world first locked down, but I’m hopeful with spring just around the corner and vaccines being rolled out across the country that eventually we will all be able to get back to some type of normalcy. Although, I know there are changes that will be with us forever. Zoom and Teams Video conference will reduce business travel. Working from home will be more acceptable. And, we will all keep a stash of PPE and TP in our homes for the next event.
Our PWH® committees have been busy converting our PWH® Leadership Summit to a best-in-class virtual summit. The theme this year is Be Inspired. I encourage you to attend and get inspired by all of the wonderful speakers and sessions we have planned. I am pretty sure we could all benefit from reconnecting with our colleagues in the industry and being inspired by their stories of leadership. Although the Summit is virtual, the PWH® Summit Committee is creating opportunities to connect and network as a PWH® community.
Vicky Lyle
I encourage you to attend and get inspired by all of the wonderful speakers and sessions we have planned. We just wrapped up celebrating International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month. “Choose to Challenge” was the theme of this year’s global International Women’s Day event. In what ways do PWH® members and corporate partners choose to challenge all gender, racial and economic inequalities throughout the world and within the healthcare industry? Bring your ideas and questions to the virtual
PWH® Leadership Summit. Help us think of important steps our industry can take to ensure a more equitable healthcare industry for us, our customers and the patients we all serve. Sincerely, Vicky Lyle Chair, Professional Women in Healthcare® VP, Industry Associations, Owens & Minor

Allison Therwanger
This board member is someone who takes the time to carefully think through her next step. She is passionate about the future of healthcare, and not only how she is going to get there but how she can help others thrive through some of the most challenging conditions, changes, trials, tribulations and nuances as they come. She is not afraid to say yes (as long as it is carefully thought out). Once she does, there is no turning back. She jumps in and makes it better for everyone. She gets excited about training and making sure everyone succeeds – this came to light during COVID when she launched virtual “best practices” for our whole industry to be successful. Thank You Eryn Marx for your commitment to PWH® in 2020.
This board member has provided years of guidance, support and direction to our entire board – especially during periods of growth and discussions around our future. When it was time to have difficult discussions, she stepped in, remained calm, confident and was a rock right to the end. She is one of the busiest women I know but always makes time for PWH® and provides endless support on a professional, personal and financial level. Thank you, Allison Therwanger, for your commitment and support of PWH®!

MENTORSHIP SPOTLIGHT
Trust, Confidence and Commitment Makes Mentoring Work This issue we spotlight mentee Liz Hargett and her mentor Vicky Lyle. Liz has learned to utilize her sphere of influence to meet leadership growth goals, and Vicky has learned that a mentee usually knows the answer to her question, she just needs the space to talk it through with someone she can trust. Read below to learn what makes their mentorship work. MENTEE’S PERSPECTIVE
Liz Hargett, Manager, Performance Groups, Supply Chain Services, Premier Inc. What is your background? I have been in Supply Chain for almost 14 years working in group purchasing organizations (GPOs). I joined Premier eight years ago and absolutely love working in the healthcare industry. It is such a fast-paced environment with so much opportunity for growth. And, knowing that I am making a difference keeps me motivated.
Why were you seeking a mentor? What was your goal? Oftentimes, our best intentions of focusing on our own development is pushed aside as it competes with other priorities. I trusted that working with a PWH® mentor would bring that focus to the forefront. I was eager for advice and coaching in my own professional growth as well as leadership development. Since my entire career has been GPO centered, I specifically requested a mentor that could offer a different perspective.

MENTORSHIP SPOTLIGHT
What have you learned from you mentor? As Vicky and I discussed what my goals were, she helped me realize there are multiple paths to achieving your goals. Some of the key points I have learned are: > Make your goals a priority and keep them at the top of your list. > Outline your goals specifically, including a map to accomplishment. > Identify your cheerleaders/mentors and check in with them regularly. Vicky also helped me to identify ways to enhance my leadership skills outside the practice of direct supervision and enabled me to utilize my sphere of influence to meet my leadership growth goals.
What has worked with you and your mentor? Why has the relationship been successful? From introductions and throughout our relationship, Vicky has been welcoming and approachable. We began our relationship meeting monthly focusing on getting to know one another and sharing where we were in our professional and personal lives. While our work together felt casual, Vicky was structured and helped me to prioritize my goals and develop a plan on how to achieve them. Along the way, Vicky shared experiences from her life’s journey, and those have already helped shape my future. Best laid plans don’t always account for the challenges a pandemic can bring, and Vicky helped me work through that as well. I have learned a great deal from Vicky, and I value our relationship
MENTOR’S PERSPECTIVE
Vicky Lyle, VP, Industry Associations, Owens & Minor, PWH® Chair What is your background, current company affiliation and position? I am Vice President of Industry Associations at Owens & Minor where I am responsible for industry relations with healthcare and professional industry associations. I have more than 30 years of experience in healthcare supply chain, working in various roles at Owens & Minor including warehouse operations, technology, 3PL and provider services. I serve on the Board of PWH® and currently chair the organization. I also serve on the Healthcare Supplier Diversity Alliance and on the HIDA Diversity Council.

immensely. We now talk on a quarterly basis just to check in on my progress and keep in touch. I’m forever grateful for her commitment to mentorship.
What is your take on the value of mentorship? A mentor relationship is valuable because it gives the mentee assistance and coaching in self-discovery and personal insight, refinement in goal setting and accountability, and openness to different perspectives. The PWH’s mentoring program specifically provided me with an opportunity to access an excellent mentor who was outside the walls of my professional reach. That difference in perspective was critical in the success of our relationship and my professional journey.
Why were you seeking a mentee? What was your goal? It is my passion for helping others that led me to mentoring. I have been so fortunate to have many great mentors throughout my career (my personal board of directors). I wanted to share what I have learned in hopes of helping someone else achieve their goals.
What have you learned from your Mentee? As a mentor, I have learned a lot from Liz and the process overall. My biggest lesson, sometimes you simply need to offer an ear to listen. Mentees don’t always need advice. They usually know
the answer but need to have the space to talk it through with someone.
What has worked with you and your mentee? Why has the relationship been successful? Liz is full of energy and embraced the mentoring program right away. She took responsibility for setting up the meetings and what we were going to work on. She had goals that we were able to focus on. Also, an important part of the mentor/mentee relationship is trust. We trusted that we both kept our conversations confidential, and it allowed for open honest discussions.
What is your take on the value of mentorship? The PWH® mentoring committee did an amazing job matching Liz and me. We clicked immediately and had several things in common. I have truly enjoyed getting to know Liz. I am so proud to see her continuing to accomplish her goals. It is important for those entering the program to know that while the PWH® mentoring program provides a framework and makes the initial connection, it is up to the mentee and the mentor to make the relationship work. And, it is up to the mentee to do the work that makes change happen.
About the PWH®. Mentor Program How can PWH® members get involved in the PWH® Mentoring Program? Visit the mentoring page on the PWH®. website (mypwh.org/mentoring). At the bottom of the page, there is a link to click to join the program. You will be asked to fill out a questionnaire (which should take five minutes or less) and from there you will be contacted by the PWH®. Mentoring Committee. We will speak with you and get to know you better before connecting you with a mentor. We make the introduction for you and your match, and provide some tips and recommendations to get started. You can also contact the Chair of the PWH® Mentoring Committee, Eryn Marx, at emarx@kbkcommunications.com.
How does the PWH® Mentoring Program work? In addition to coordinating the match, the PWH®. Mentoring Program provides tips and recommendations to help nurture the mentoring relationship. Communication is so important! Set expectations. Determine how often you can both commit to speaking. Let each other know your preferred format for communicating (email, phone calls, texts, in person meetings). Make clear what you want to accomplish from the relationship. This program gives you the ability to connect with people in our industry whom you might not otherwise be able to meet. Take advantage of this PWH®. member benefit. We guarantee, you won’t regret it!

PWH® LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
Get Inspired to Keep Leading 2021 PWH® Leadership Summit By Susan Kaiser

Spring 2021 • Issue 2 • www.mypwh.org
As I reflect upon our first two leadership summits in Minneapolis, so many words come to mind—motivation, education, support and inspiration are a few. I believe we can all agree that when you leave the summit, you walk away wanting to take every moment back with you to share with others, so they can enjoy the experience that the PWH® Leadership Summit brings.
I can still remember that first year as Vice Chair of Content, when young, aspiring leaders to seasoned, industry leaders would excitedly approach me in the hallways or on the elevator with comments about the summit. They shared thoughts on how much they were learning from the speakers and the variety of content, how much they enjoyed the networking, and how the important message of gender partnership and diversity was needed in our industry. As my background is in PR and communications and I’m not physically “out in the field” like many of the attendees, I found the comments to be both interesting and enlightening. I sensed a true need for support and relationshipbuilding, and I felt strongly that PWH® was able to help fulfill that need. Due to the pandemic and ongoing challenges, we decided it would be in the best interest of our attendees to make the summit virtual this year. Something we never saw coming! But, as we’ve all had to adjust our lives and learn new ways of engaging with each other, we will confidently do it again with this year’s summit, and it will be great. While we will miss the comradery that comes with being together live during the summit, I believe the attendees will truly be inspired this year with the programming and networking that we have planned.
Dynamic Speakers and Creative Networking We are excited to share that our dynamic lineup of speakers remains unchanged and the content, as with the first two summits, will motivate, educate and inspire you. In addition to our extraordinary keynote speakers and workshop facilitators, you will hear from key executives in our industry who will share insights that will help you on your leadership journey. How fortunate we are to have the opportunity to learn from these leaders in the healthcare
PWH® Showcase with virtual rooms for our sponsors where you can learn more about what their companies provide. There will also be new member and mentor/ mentee networking opportunities and cultural inclusion education. And of course, we will have a fun networking event on the first day of the conference (hint: it involves food ). Get Inspired with Healthy Eating at Home What do you do when it’s bitterly cold outside? Stay inside and cook! The oven warms your kitchen, and the food warms our souls. February was Heart Awareness month, and Heart Health is a big focus for this year’s PWH® Leadership Summit, and so I reached out to my dear friend, Kristen Hess, The Artful Gourmet for some recipes with a healthier flair. I met Kristen in the Greek Islands over 10 years ago, and we have remained friends. She has lived a flavorful life, as a food stylist, photographer, blogger and recipe writer. She has worked with many top chefs and celebrities and traveled the world. For this issue, she shares delicious options for healthy, low carb, keto friendly dishes, but my favorite is the “Refreshingly light, Get in my Bikini Crab Salad!” Follow her blog which celebrates the art of food & cooking through colorful recipes, stories and photographs, www.theartfulgourmet.com. 3 Magical Phrases to Enhance Your Communication Skills By AmyK Hutchens “How might we…” instantly conveys that you expect everyone to do some thinking and invites the collective sharing of ideas. “How might we…” requests engagement and participation and expresses inclusion and collaboration. For example: > How might we make this process more efficient? > How might we meet and exceed this goal? > How might we create more time for us? On average, you engage in six to nine significantly meaningful conversations each day that will influence your future. Relationships with colleagues, family members, neighbors, your partner, and even yourself are filled with meaningful conversations, and several of them, can be down-right tough conversations.
Suppose in this crazy, complex world you could start every day with a confident smile, knowing every tough conversation at work and at home will ignite an “aha” moment and get you the results you desire. Wouldn’t that be nice? Guess what: you can. And all it requires is one significant adjustment to how you play this game called communication. You have to learn how to navigate the tough conversations in your life without saying something you’ll regret, giving your power away, or damaging your relationships along the way. Communication is hard, so we’re going to make it a whole lot easier with three Magical Phrases. Start using these three Magical Phrases, and you’ll start turning tough conversations into highly profitable ones.
1. “How Might We...” Maybe you want to increase sales by 12 percent, improve your marriage, or raise money for a charity. Unfortunately, when you first think about your wants, your brain’s initial reaction is, “Yep, that’s nice. I want that too.” But it doesn’t do anything. This inaction stems from the fact that the brain needs a trigger. To effectively ignite your thinking, you must flip your objective from a statement to a question using: “How might we…” Posed as a question, this phrase immediately engages your brain into figuring out how to answer and fulfill this want of yours. You start reflecting on past successes and failures. You start evaluating current conditions, variables, and options. You start predicting exactly how you and your posse might best move forward and make it happen.
Placing the words “How might we…” at the beginning of your stated desire, so you turn it into a question, will raise the quality of your thinking and have you (and others) working toward your want, pronto.
2. “A Part of Me…” One of my most favorite one-liners to reduce tension in a tough conversation and lower the other person’s defenses is: “A part of me…” This phrase is a brilliant way to express a negative emotion you are feeling while simultaneously creating space for other emotions and possible solutions. Whether you’re upset with a partner, frustrated with one of your kids, fed up with an underperformer at work, or dealing with a difficult sibling, it’s important to not speak in absolutes. When you say, “I’m frustrated” or “I’m disappointed,” the other person hears an absolute. There’s no wiggle room for other emotions. It’s as if you just said, “I’m 100 percent frustrated” or “I’m 100 percent disappointed.”
Spring 2021 • Issue 2 • www.mypwh.org 13
PWH® LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
Whereas, when you say, “A part of me is frustrated…, “ or “A part of me is disappointed,” you’re communicating that it’s not your only emotion. You’re also leaving wiggle room for respect, hope, love, and connection. Tension deescalates because you’ve created space for dialogue instead of defensiveness.
3. “I Have This Story in My Head.” When you get triggered by a life event, by some circumstance—whether it’s a computer system crashing, a diet failing, or a presentation going up in smoke—you make up a story about it in your head. When you share a story in your head, you frequently approach these conversations bombastically, aggressively, passive-aggressively, or defensively. You say things such as, “You don’t want to hang out with us anymore,” “You don’t
want me to be successful,” or, “Nothing I ever say is good enough.” During difficult conversations, your story might get in the way of resolution. When you state your story as if it is fact, as if it is the only reality that could possibly exist, you risk fanning the flames of a fight. Rather than feeling more connected, accepted, and loved (which is what you really want when you share your story), you increase another’s defensiveness and walls start going up—fast. Conversely, when you state your story as if it’s a work in progress and open to modification, you make space for greater understanding. You’re inviting further interpretations and a more complete perspective. When you say, “I have this story in my head… I don’t even know if it’s true. I’m sharing it with you because I’m wondering if it’s even accurate,” this creates space
for the possibility that you don’t have it all figured out, and it gives the other party a chance to confirm or correct.
Quality Conversations Make for a Quality Life After twenty-eight years as a teacher, trainer, business consultant, coach, and award-winning international speaker, I have repeatedly proven in my own life and the lives of my clients that the quality of your life is a direct reflection of the quality of your conversations. When you use these three Magical Phrases, your toughest conversations will almost magically become far less daunting. These phrases will have you confidently and competently navigating your way through your most critical conversations, so you strengthen your relationships and get more of what you want, starting today.

HIDA LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Manufacturing Medical Supplies in the United States A Recommendation from HIDA By Linda Rouse O’Neill, HIDA VP of Government Affairs
supplies, needles/syringes, and infection prevention products. Domestic production is often more expensive than global sources and can’t always be supported through normal market commerce. The federal government will need to support and fund a diversified sourcing strategy in partnership with the private sector.
To avoid shortages of critical medical supplies such as personal protective equipment (PPE) in the future, the United States must adopt a policy to diversify manufacturing and sourcing of these materials. The COVID-19 pandemic has driven unprecedented worldwide demand for pandemic-related medical supplies. While effective for reducing costs in healthcare, U.S. reliance on global sources impacted supply chain resilience. The pandemic highlighted the need for diversity in sources for pandemic medical supplies, including building domestic manufacturing capability in the United States.
18
Onshoring is moving or starting production in the United States Nearshoring is regional manufacturing in the Americas.
It’s important to expand domestic and nearshored manufacturing capacity for critical products to augment global sources. Leveraging the strengths of each manufacturing location (U.S., regional and global) will result in the highest level of supply chain resilience at the lowest overall cost. These policies should apply to all products important for pandemic response including PPE, testing
Spring 2021 • Issue 2 • www.mypwh.org
HIDA Recommends: 1. Prioritizing companies with experience in healthcare: Manufacturing medical grade products requires specialized expertise and capability. Companies selected to receive government support to onshore production must have an extensive track record of meeting FDA-quality standards for medical grade products. 2. Leveraging the established public/ private partnerships: The private sector already is actively ramping up investments in U.S. manufacturing. Government incentives and commercial market investments should complement and reinforce each other in a comprehensive plan that includes: > Assessment of on-shoring viability: A detailed plan is needed to target critical supply categories, assess viability of U.S. manufacturing such as raw materials, cost and regulatory issues. A baseline of global production needs to be established to enable setting and monitoring progress against clear production targets for U.S. manufacturing.
> Meaningful incentives: Any plan should include infrastructure investments, tax incentives, loan programs, and grants. These incentives provide guidance to industry to expand and establish industrial capability, foster research and development, and enhance private sector investments. 3. Supporting the existing supply chain Payment and trade policies can be used to provide a consistent demand signal to the commercial market for long term viability. Policies should include:
> Direct procurement: The government should structure its own purchases of medical products through long term, multi-year contracts of committed purchases with manufacturers and distributors. > Trade agreements: Leverage existing regional trade agreements to facilitate U.S. and regional production opportunities. > Reimbursement: Assess Medicare and Medicaid payment policies across the continuum of care to identify opportunities to incentivize domestic purchasing.
> Avoid unintended consequences: Federal government purchases can be so large they move markets and disrupt the supply chain. Whenever possible, these purchases should be done in a planned, measured way with regard to quantities and timing. Fostering diversified sourcing is a key component of HIDA’s comprehensive framework for building a more robust pandemic response infrastructure.
