EDITOR’S
LETTER
Heather Marie talks the new decade, our ode to fashion and living for the simpler things.
T
here’s nothing like a new year to make you reflect on where you have been and where you are going. Add in a brand new decade and the possibilities of tomorrow heighten to new levels. In a moment of reflection many take the opportunity to sift through the archives of the past, to better understand and to enter a new year brimming with ideas to push an enduring legacy forward. This publication is no different. Upon our first edition we professed our ode to a new beginning. A philosophy more relevant than ever.
“So much good and so much opportunity for friendship, love and growth.”
Designed to be your avant-garde destination to celebrate innovation and further drive social conversations, we promised to speak to you to inspire, not to inform. For me, it is the conversation with Claire Rose (featured later in this issue) that sparked this topic of conversation. “I guess the secret is not to care too much. Don’t live your life Devon Windsor on social media, live it here and now, and if you feel like sharing it, share it.” Words heard before in some form or other, but a sentiment heavy on my heart this time. No surprise that the rise of social media is accompanied by mixed reviews. On one hand the array of opportunity offered on a digital platform is of the most global scale in history. A special place to showcase your passion, your art, your livelihood; a forum to find inspiration in the mind of another like soul. So much good and so much opportunity for friendship, love and growth. But on the other hand, living behind a screen stems much doubt to the future ramifications of life on social media. Listening to social media sensation Claire reminded me that it is important to balance this platform with the here and the now and that content can sometimes be the enemy of art. Share, but remember to be here, in the now. The same person you are to the person next to you. To those that see you in plain sight, not just through the curated screen. It is only fitting that model turned actress and not-so-secret activist, AnnaLynne McCord - who continues to champion mind-body integration - should be this cover. Fighting for personal freedom and so much more, she embodies the sentiment to find the balance in your professional world, in this digital world, in your own mind and body. And that is what will set you free. It is the key to making this new decade the best one yet. Happy reading and happy new year. Escape THE GREAT
with Devon Windsor
From sandy beaches to global runways to the head of the table in her boardroom, darling Midwesterner turned renowned swimwear designer Devon Windsor - is making waves in the fashion industry in the name of hard work and downright good fashion. By Jessica Grace Booker

S
elf-proclaimed entrepreneur, Devon Windsor has earned the moniker and every accolade that she has come across. Discovered at the age of fourteen, Windsor’s curriculum vitae reads like a super-model’s wishlist with top agencies, innovative fashion presentations and coveted brand partnerships. She was a mainstay in theVictoria’s Secret fashions show for over five years and has graced hundreds of runways throughout her career. No matter how many household names she collaborates with, no matter the glitz or the glam that accompanies her life, this blonde bombshell strives to elevate essential swimwear, deciphering the styles and cuts to be relatable, affordable and dreamy for all. Growing up with a love for the spotlight, Windsor humbly admits that she did not fully appreciate fashion and design until graced the opportunity to travel and experience the global meccas of the fashion world. An influence very obvious in her custom swimwear line, pieces are impeccably cut with an allure both universal and broad. “Growing up, I was the least fashionable person I know,” laughed the model. Reminiscing of her travels and dreamy destinations to London, Milan and New York, Paris reigns most fashion forward. “Every person on the street you see looks incredibly chic,” admired Windsor. Season after season this swimwear vet strives to bring out as much confidence in women as possible. What else could instill more confidence than the perfect swimsuit? With barely-there tie-bottoms and flattering highrise waistlines chiming perfectly with bold collars and statement-making sleeves, rarely do you find this much variety. Speaking fluently to its audience’s taste and body-types. Windsor’s pieces harmoniously lend themselves so seamlessly to almost any sun-kissed situation. Staying true to Windsor’s unwavering commitment to confidence and inspiring women to feel beautiful, such moments are achieved through intentional curation. These updated essentials can transfer effortlessly from the pool, to the beach, to the yacht and anywhere in between. With boldness in the shapes and a notable advance in design detail, Summer’s wishlist of worthy pieces blend perfectly with feminine softness, cold-shoulder sleeves and bandage cut-outs to make these daring pieces feel familiar and accessible.
A scroll through this need-to-know designer with the coveted style know-how’s curated Insta feed, it is increasingly clear that Devon herself aims to make herself as accessible to those who have followed her incredible journey. Remaining authentic and genuine with her loyal followers she leaves no secrets to her success, rarely, if ever, shying away from the realities of her line of work as a model and entrepreneur. “It is not at all as glamorous as it looks,” exposed Devon. “It’s a lot of work, traveling and sleepless nights, which has gotten me where I am today!” Conquering every obstacle from a professional standpoint and building her empire on her own terms, Windsor also finds time to share with us those quieter, more tender and breath-taking moments that help her to find balance in an unpredictable and uncertain industry. From workouts, to her cuisine quests, to her immaculate marriage celebration in St. Barth’s, Windsor is brilliantly transparent about the moments that bring balance to her hard working life. “Balance is probably the most important thing in maintaining a healthy and happy life for myself. My schedule is all over the place and the only way I seem to be able to handle that is if I continue to take care of my mental and physical health. Working out, having a balanced diet and sleeping at least 8-10 hours a night are my secrets,” shared the designer. It is that work ethic that has made her transition from working in front of the lens to behind it so seamless and relatable.
“Balance is probably the most important thing in maintaining a healthy and happy life for myself.”
Perhaps it was Windsor’s athletic prowess which primed her for the kind of sacrifice it would take to achieve such success in an industry known for being cutthroat, both as a model and designer, but she makes it seem as effortless as her style. When she’s not designing the next elevated dream in swimwear or curating content as the face of a fellow brand or sitting front row at the next big show, she professes that she simply does not wear makeup. And if she must venture out? Well then, clean skin with a sultry brown smoky eye is her go-to. Dressing for her mood, baggy jeans and a white t-shirt are her default, a testament to her affinity for all things classic and timeless. “I don’t like to label my personal style, but if I had to I would describe my style as: effortless, elevated and chic.”
19
Considered young in the world of a designer, Windsor is proving time and time again that she is listening and constantly learning. Drawing inspiration from all of her travels and the impactful women all around her, she has become a student of her craft and has dedicated herself to the intricacies of design. “I find that people really love our textured fabrics that feel a bit more elevated, expensive and have a bit more detail. So, fabrics similar to these will be making an appearance in our new collection.” Her diligence has also brought about a pearl of wisdom that manifests in not only her design but in her mantras. Opening up to the secrets of balance, she finds
20
comfort in her loved ones, accepting that not everyone is going to be open to all that she has to offer. “You may be the juiciest peach in the world, but someone is still going to hate peaches,” she asserts, as she reflects on how guarded she has become as she gains status as a public figure. It is in those moments that we begin to see where her drive to uplift and encourage other women through her design stems from. She aims to give every woman the thrill of the runway with every stitch of her designs. By the looks of her distinguished and celebrated repertoire she is going to continue to do just that.

WOMAN MISSION ON A
Actress and activist AnnaLynne McCord’s latest role is far from the glamour of the 90210, and it’s changing the world. By Errin Taylor Maye
Dress: Reema Nahar Diamond Necklace: Gabriel New York
B
est known by her portrayal of privileged socialite Naomi Clark on the CW reboot, 90210, AnnaLynne McCord effortlessly transitioned from multi-talented Hollywood heavyweight to global activist raising awareness and leading the fight against human trafficking. Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, the bronzed Goddess began creating her own moments once she left home at the age of fifteen. First stop: New York City. “I began modeling with Wilhelmina Miami when I was fifteen. I split my time between Miami and New York for a couple of years.” In hopes of being her version of Julia Roberts, Georgian turned Hollywood darling, and McCord had little trouble leaving the world of modeling in pursuit of the big screen. “When I moved to New York, I disappointed my modeling agents at Major Model Management. The director wanted me to be her ‘new Kate Moss’.” Remaining true to herself, McCord’s new chapter was just around the corner. Her first major role came just two years later in 2005’s action-thriller film Transporter 2, on her birthday she adds. A memory she holds dear, she looks back on the day her agent Melissa Hirschenson – then casting director – spraying brunette hair color in her hair in the casting office restroom – and Jason Statham, Louis Leterrier and Steve Chasman collectively singing “Happy Birthday” during the audition. Looking back, she says it was one of the happiest days of her life.
Leaving before anything opens and heading home after everything is closed, life would seem to be in a standstill for several months at a time. “For nine months, you’re just thinking, ‘during my hiatus I’ll catch up on everything.’ Of course, by the time you wrap a season you are either desperate for a vacation or you’re already slated to do a film in the months of your time off.” A cycle that continued for five seasons. “Of course... having said all of that — I get to do what I dreamed of doing since I was a 9-year-old little girl. There is a lot that goes into being an artist, the pay-off is the art itself. I love what I do between action and cut. Acting can be incredibly cathartic. It also gives you such a beautiful opportunity to slip on the shoes of another person and see the world through their eyes.” Finding satisfaction in the act of disappearing into a new character – a story, a life –McCord compares the thrill to a self-induced adrenaline rush. With mild anxiety-like undertones, her excitement as a performer questioning her own relativity to the character’s presence borderline present and instinctual. “It’s exciting. I don’t know if I’m going to kill it or screw it up. It’s an odd process, but it’s my process and I kind of love it. 90210’s Naomi Clark and I don’t share very many personality traits. She’s a party-girl extrovert. I’m a solo-traveler bookworm,” she says, with a hint of humor in her voice, “The beautiful element of all my characters is their flaws. I enjoy bringing relatable and deeply human qualities to my roles. That’s my fun, personal challenge. Finding the moments that weren’t necessarily written.” After the end of 90210 in 2013, McCord’s character development search was finding storylines that were dissimilar to her own. “Playing a character like me always felt too exposing.” However, in 2011, McCord signed on for a role in the film Excision. The project, a genre-mashup under the horror category, she felt a sense of understanding as to the anti-hero. In no way a murderer, but she further explains that small moments during filming explored her abilities as an artist and growth as an individual. “[My character] Pauline analyzed and processed the world around her. There were moments during filming that I felt very exposed. It was confronting and really grew me as an artist.” In the end, McCord went on to receive several awards, including the Málaga International.
“I am the Storm. I am love. So are we all. And so it is.”
After years of developing her repertoire in The Big Apple, Los Angeles came calling. From jet lag to becoming a major working actress, McCord’s concept of time was nothing to play with. “When I first started 90210, my Monday mornings began at 3:15AM,” she says with her eyes closed. Understanding the struggle, for a leading actress it could feel as if there was no end in sight. She continues, “I would get home around 8 or 9pm, if I was lucky. By Friday, we were filming through to sunrise on Saturday. 90 hour work weeks and press shoots or travel for appearances on the weekends pretty much ensured that sleeping was a luxury I couldn’t afford.” When you are the lead on one of the decade’s highly acclaimed series on television, getting normal errands done would be seen as a dream concept for many. “It does not happen,” she laughed.
27
Now at 32, McCord’s most crucial role thus far has been voicing her support and awareness on the global issues of human trafficking for the last 12 years. Together1Heart, founded in 2014 by Somaly Mam, is an organization that supports young women and girls who have been victims or are currently at risk of becoming victims of sex trafficking. With its established programs for rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration, the team has provided extensive psychological care, art therapy and mind-body focus work coupled with primary, secondary and higher-levels of education. Based on the girl’s needs and desires, Together1Heart also offers vocational skill training opportunities encouraging girls to gain self-confidence as they reenter society. McCord’s decision to join the fight to end human trafficking was born out of a necessity. “I was experiencing an incredible amount of professional success. From being offered 90210 and other roles and opportunities, from the outside, everything was going well. But on the inside, I was screaming to be set free.” Intuitively, McCord knew that if she took a stance against modern-day slavery, it could one day lead to her freedom. “Sometimes it’s easier to see what we’ve learned looking back at our lives. However, if we’re able to ask, whether it be our higher self, God or the Universe, how our current pain can become a teacher we’ve actually found the key to unlock the freedom from that pain. My hero, best friend and the founder of the organization, Somaly told me, ‘We thank our enemies, they bring us the greatest lessons.’ I love this because it means there are no mistakes. If someone’s action causes me pain, I can focus on the hurt or I can ask, ‘what can I learn from this struggle?’” Sensing a moment of Eat, Pray, Love, McCord’s discovery of self soon began to mold and mature. “With all I’ve discovered in my life there is one thing I am certain of — it’s that I am certain of nothing. Everything always changes. Nothing lasts forever. When we leave this earth, the only thing we take with us is all that we gave away. So what will you be able to take with you? I want to be able to say that I took the whole world with me, because before I breathed my last I gave the whole world to the world. Clearing the mind and clearing the body of the mind’s habits is the fastest path towards personal freedom that I’ve found.” With a clear mind and body, McCord’s idea developed into a means of reflection. By using that same calm nature from within to the outside world and her advocacy efforts, she strives to promote mind-body integration as she ventures through her
28
own pains and leading the girls and women-based organization. “What is within me will be what I reflect outward. If I am in pain, I will project pain. If I am enslaved inside my mind, I cannot promote freedom outside in the world. Mind-body integration must occur in order for peace to be a part of daily life. Most every issue in the world begins and ends with the state of the body. As my good friend and neuroscientist Benjamin Fry discusses in his book, The Invisible Lion, when the nervous system is dysregulated the mind nor the body can find ease. And this ‘disease’ is exacerbated by both in a vicious cycle. An unhappy body creates unhappy stories in the mind creating more unhappiness in the body. This then extends outward to those around us and our energy has a ripple effect out in the world.” Mentally aware of said ripple effect, McCord and Mam launched the Storm the Planet World Tour. The massive global awareness campaign, 20-city tour, features a mass meditation event with an emphasis on fighting slavery from the inside out. With excitement in her heart and voice, McCord explains the movement being, “A very loud and energetic Compassion Meditation, which will feel like love and sound like a storm. I’m going to Storm the planet with Love and I want to meet everyone in the process.” Kicking off in January in Los Angeles, the tour will stop in New York (March 14th), Boston, Atlanta, Miami, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Seattle. Followed by an overseas trip to Toronto, London, Paris, Geneva, Rio De Janeiro, and many others. Forming a unique bond between individuals having endured self-tragedies, McCord and the Together1Heart organization’s aim is for us all to see our chains unite us, not break us. “Everyone on this planet has felt pain. It is my mission to make sure they also feel compassion and love. Instead of the pain we’ve experienced keeping us held back and isolated, we have an opportunity to allow it to connect us. This requires light to remove the darkness, love to remove the fear and compassion to remove the hate. Compassion is not a weak choice. Compassion takes the fiercest strength on the planet. Compassion requires a Storm made of pure Love.” With a new storm coming in 2020, McCord, rest assured knows who she is and what we can all do and become with love and discovering our own power. “I am the Storm. I am love. So are we all. And so it is.” If you would like to be a part of the anti-trafficking efforts, visit together1heart.org.

ike almost everything in the retail game, the name, philosophy, and mission propel a label, and for designer Natalie Rolt the name of the game was simple: design pieces of the highest quality. Social media has been incredibly influential in expanding the brand’s awareness, resonating on an international scale. As of recent, Natalie Rolt designs dressed major personalities including the likes of Bella Hadid, Shanina Shaik, Nadine Leopold, and Natasha Oakley. Establishing coveted collaborations with influencers of this caliber, as well as with their loyal customer base, has further intertwined their ethos of timeless, everlasting designs. Established in 2012 in Western Australia, Natalie Rolt made a name for itself as a stand-alone fashion brand. Owner and designer, Natalie Rolt started her namesake with a need to embrace the female silhouette through contemporary

We appreciate the

process of fashion and work on a collaborative basis with our customers to make everlasting designs. Fashion to Natalie Rolt often involves the art of concealing one’s source to celebrate individuality and originality,” shares the label. Dedicated to effortless luxury, the Natalie Rolt woman is strong, self-assured and complex. Continually looking to evolve their pieces to mirror their customer’s changing lifestyle, Natalie Rolt values personal and creative growth. Motivating women to be the best version of themselves, the Aussie label strives to design and create wearable pieces for modern women, while “being environmentally conscious. We design for those who look to act with a sense of social responsibility. Our in-house production processes ensure that local craftsmanship is celebrated and fabric wastage is minimized. The women who wear Natalie Rolt respect the longevity of our quality designs,” the label adds. Noting the alluring declaration of the effortless grandeur decisively displayed across the Evening 20 Release 2 line, Natalie Rolt’s inspiration for the latest coveted collection was largely drawn from the trademarks of their acclaimed quality and the ode to elegant fabrics. “Soft silhouettes are showcased by delicate chiffon gowns and bold sequined knits highlight modern design details including iconic adjustable ruching. Sophisticated and sensual, it is a collection of captivating gowns and bold separates designed for the confident woman. Engaging in the made-to-order process, the designs exude grace and fluidity through a progression of iconic details featuring twists, ruching, and paneling,” exposed the must-wear label.
looked to embrace the female form and our elegant pieces are designed to encourage sensuality and authenticity,” shares the label. “We have always worked closely with our in-house pattern-maker to ensure the fit of our designs compliment the individual.” Differentiating itself in global fashion and style, Natalie Rolt understands the climatic change when designing for women from all over the world. “Seasonality is an intricate external factor that widely affects style choices. The dryness of our local climate [in Australia] creates a unique and significant demand for lightweight and essential linen designs. The timing of this demand differs from country to country,” states the design team. With immense pressure to continue materializing knock-out collections in an always changing industry, Natalie Rolt puts their advice to use to maintain an open mind in perfect harmony with a precise vision. “Now and then, it’s important to look left and right to evaluate the market; however, for the most part, keep your eye on what’s ahead and take action to get there. Whilst the fashion industry has very glamorous elements, it’s important to be aware of the sheer degree of hard work involved. It takes a united team who are passionat about the end goal and feel confident enough to trust their instinct and create a unique point of difference. Find that element of differentiation and run with it.”
“Beauty is unique and we hope those who wear our pieces feel confident in celebrating their originality.”
Now set your sights on a Natalie Rolt genuine beauty The Rosalia Gown. This statement piece of the latest collection and so far, also the best-seller, uses a draping technique to individually construct an effortlessly gathered bust panel. “For years now, our customers have relied on us for occasion pieces as well as everyday wardrobe staples and we will be staying true to this formula. We look forward to ensuring that our ever-evolving designs continue to be inspired by our customer’s way of life,” heartened the label. In years past, the Natalie Rolt team have participated in Sydney Fashion Week. MARY LAWLESS LEE For life lived in the in-between, Mary Lawless Lee – founder of creative platform Happily Grey – spotlights her journey from shifts in hospitals to her full-time curating career to stylish mother of Navy James and how she gained a new perspective within grey’s neutrality. By Errin Taylor Maye
Is she the modern-day, badass outlaw of the West? With a name like Mary Lawless Lee, one would surely think so, but this need-to-know influencer has been hard at work defending, promoting and managing her multidimensional creative platform - Happily Grey. As the acting founder and editor of the influential fashion blog, Lee curates covet-worthy content from her wedding to husband Madison to the birth of their daughter Navy James and everything in-between. With a loyal following and fan base of more than 2.6 million across social media, Lee’s desire to transform a passion project into a full-fledged business has allowed her interests and know-how in lifestyle, travel, and fitness to evolve and flourish making her a well sought-after brand and media influencer domestically and internationally. “I just hope that people see me as kind, hard-working, and genuine.”
While working in the early years as a full-time nurse in Nashville, Tennessee, Lee was anxious for an outlet to express her creative abilities. With the birth of Happily Grey – launched in 2013 – Lee was able to tap into her vulnerable and artistic side, through color. Now, with a few scrolls through Mary Lawless Lee’s Instagram, a single focus on monochromatic is far from the blog’s namesake. “When people hear the name Happily Grey, they often associate it with a color, but I actually love color and wear it often.” Having been raised in a conservative and traditional household, Lee appears to be thankful for her upbringing style. “Most situations, relationships, scenarios were presented simply as black and white, this or that. Through my early 20s, I went through some experiences that opened up my world and made me realize it’s not always black and white.
59
L
ife can be quite grey.” It was through this discovery that Lee found confidence, strength, independence and ultimately felt the most creative. “Thank goodness life isn’t simply black and white. Thank goodness for moments of chaos and vulnerability and for living outside the stereotypical box of ‘what should.’ Through the grey, I have gained more perspective, strength, and determination,” beamed the media mogul. As the brand has continued to expand over the past eight years, now encompassing numerous components to accommodate the unique and ever-changing lives of Mary Lawless Lee and Happily Grey’s followers, Lee’s idea and approach to launching a store turned out to be a natural next step. “I wanted a physical space for my readers to come and experience Happily Grey as a kind of face to the brand. My hope for Happily Grey is that it’s like stepping into my closet or home. The store itself is set up as more of a showroom experience with a select few of my favorite brands and designers. Eventually, I hope to carry my label in the space.” HG Headquarters and HG Retail have since introduced homeware, clothing and accessories. Hand-picked by Lee herself, Lee expresses that the space and the products she has created and brought to the forefront for her followers is a true representation of Happily Grey and the things she loves most. Last month, Lee launched HG apparel, a launch continuation of the ever-expanding umbrella corporation Happily Grey has grown to become. Offering a signature style and exclusive eye for design that is different for newcomers just settling their sights on Lee’s creation, the influencer describes her taste as an approachable masculine style with bold elements, insisting that her look is still in the area of French chic, remaining effortless. Finding its way into the platform’s take on interior design, Lee’s interest in merging fashion and home decor came from design icon Brandon Maxwell. “There is so much creative overlap between the two – color, texture and finding the balance of creating a unique look without overdoing it. It has been so fun to dip into the world of interior design for our Headquarters and storefront.” Alongside Lee is friend and designer April Tomlin, whom she confided in to bring to life a fun and collaborative space for the HG store, reflecting Lee’s personal aesthetic. Staying ahead of fashion’s ever-changing and developing trends, Lee takes note of subtle cues displayed on the runways during New York Fashion Week. “Getting new ideas is one of my favorite aspects of Fashion Month. It’s amazing to see what new colors or patterns designers have been working on and then taking what I see on the runway and making it relatable to my style. Instagram is a huge help.” Favoring minimalist design in an interior aspect, Lee takes time to scope and analyze spaces, furniture, and art in retrospect to create the best take for HG. “I love to see spaces that have furniture that on its own
60
can be an art piece – anything that feels unique and special sets apart a space for me. I try to stay away from all white because I love to play with textures and love when a space feels warm.” This feat can be daunting, but for Lee, the challenge is the most rewarding. Taking the head of her inspirations, Lee – putting her foot down and making her point come with confidence and from experience – says the best way to hone in one’s design abilities is: know your style. “A space will constantly evolve throughout the design process, so if you have a distinct idea for how you want the space to feel, it won’t be as overwhelming. Also, just go for it. Don’t overthink it.” With business comes responsibilities. Day-to-day life as a content curator and influencer is time-consuming and often inconstant, and as a busy mom, no day is or will be the same as the next. Who she calls her greatest gift, beautiful Navy James’s budding influence has already changed Lee. As she has always hoped. “I will never be able to fully shut off my mind from thinking about Navy. Since having her, it’s like a part of me is always with her. But being a mom is all I have ever wanted – so having her has truly been one of my greatest joys. I know that I am lucky to get to do both and I don’t take it for granted, even when days are hard. I’m learning to give myself grace.” From starting her day at the Happily Grey Headquarters, Lee does not shutter at the 8:30am call time. Whether it is answering emails or shooting content with HG’s photographer, for Lee, each day for her and her team is new and full of possibility. Hitting the ground running after Christmas has given the Happily Grey team tunnel vision, narrowing in on preparations for the recent store opening. Considering Lee’s notable repertoire of worldly travels and insta-worthy experiences, the influencer insists her perspective on the global scale has given her newfound permission to create what you want, with what drives and moves your soul. “One of my favorite aspects of traveling is getting to experience the culture and vibe of a specific place. Everywhere I visit has a different feel and a different approach to fashion and interior. Whether it’s an emphasis on aesthetic or on function, I love getting to glean from these experiences and adapt them to my style.” From traveling the world to overseeing a top-tier platform for launching multifaceted products and raising and expertly styling beautiful Navy James, this year, the influencer, working mom and media mogul is adding one more to do on her already busy list: “I am working on being more present and trying to spend less time on my phone during off-hours and to read more.” Careful not to reveal too much, but just enough to entice, there may be plans for the Happily Grey empire to begin carrying its own label. Stay tuned!

here’s no stopping Jules Aurora. Standing at five-foot-three the singer and actress is small but mighty. Back to work after a holiday break and the release of a new album, we sit and talk with this multifaceted performer on what goes on in front of and behind the screens of social media. For Los Angeles-based Filipino-American singer, songwriter and actress Julianne Aurora Manalo, the journey began five years ago. In 2015, she performed abroad with Royal Caribbean for eight months as the company’s featured singer. Less than a year later, Aurora gained viral stardom posting covers, gaining millions of views on Instagram and YouTube. Today, she has since opened for Grammy-winning artists to headlining concerts to performing in front of sold-out crowds at the Staples Center, Barclays Center, the Rose Bowl and countless stages. She even secured a recurring role on CBS’ “The Young and The Restless.” Coming off of the release of her latest EP, Worth It – ranging from piano ballads to smooth R&B to Pop – Aurora’s day-to-day life as a working musician, actress and influencer are ever-changing, but we hear it is worth it all in the end. “Every day is different and can bring new opportunities and experiences. Some days I’ll spend the whole day in the studio, recording or writing, and other days I’ll be driving all around Los Angeles to auditions and castings geared towards my acting career. I also travel often for shows and to perform for fans at different colleges and cities! In terms of social media, I love that I get to make my schedule in regards to my shoots, brand deals, and collaborations. I also love that I get the opportunity to connect with my fans and people all around the world through the different channels of social media.” When she is not working, staying active is the best strategy to re-energize and refocus. “You can probably find me in the gym, going on hikes, or training at the track near my place. I also really love traveling and seeing new things. It always inspires me and re-energizes me to discover more about new cultures around the world. Last year, I traveled solo to London for a week and felt so inspired by the trip. Taking time for myself helps me remain balanced and it allows me to approach my career with new energy and enthusiasm.”
That same energy and passion is evident in her brand and social presence online and off. “I try to exude positivity and my motto is ‘Aspire to Inspire’. My goal is to inspire and empower others, especially women! I believe that women are stronger together and we need to empower and support one another,” she says. In terms of pressures from social media, Aurora believes it is solely based on ones’ perspective. “The way I see it, if I am being open, honest, and true to myself - other people can see, feel, and relate to that. I find that the more genuine and open I am, the more my messages end up resonating with my audience. I love the quote, ‘Know who you are and be it. Know what you want, and go out and get it.’ When you are secure and confident in yourself, and being yourself, it translates into everything you do,” she encourages. Aspirations to be a giver. A giver of love, a giver of good vibes and a giver of strength, Aurora’s main goal: for fans to gain perspective and inspiration from her music. “The truth is, everyone has their battles and obstacles that they face – and being able to relate to others through sharing my stories is a gift. There are songs I’ve written about the joys of new love, the pain of loss, inner battles, and songs about embracing being independent and finding happiness within. You are never alone on your journey. Both in life and online, I always want to leave people a little better off and spread light and love,” Aurora adds.
“My goal is to inspire and empower others, especially women.”
One look at the singer’s captivating performances, from belting out the National Anthem before a Lakers game (she recalls her first night performing on the renowned stage, going to her “happy place”) or posting collaborations with influential young talent – Kurt Hugo Schneider, Sam Tsui to name a few – Aurora is fully aware of the internal and external struggles of being a solo female artist. But she ensures her power is known and felt through her listeners. “I think it’s important to be versatile and be able to own a stage on my own, but also be able to shine on stage with a group. Last year I was a part of East-West Players’ production of Mamma Mia and I learned so much about what it meant to be a part of a team and essentially, a family. These people became friends that I’ll have for life, and I’m so grateful to have been open to the opportunity. On the solo side of performing, I just love being able to tell my story and share original music that fans can relate to. When a fan comes up to me to tell me how much they listen and relate to my message is the greatest feeling and the greatest gift of being an artist.” 69
Aurora explained her resolution this year, based on chosen words, tones and intentions. This year, she has her sights on proactive, present and peace. As she closed out the last decade, she feels and seems to be unapologetic stepping into her newfound sense of power. First means of business: her music and maturing artistry. Embracing her love for differentiating genres and styles, Aurora is turning her personal experiences into poetic symphonies. Emulating her musical idol Alicia Keys, as she empowers women, embracing inner beauty and exuding honesty throughout every song she touches, Aurora strives to tap into her creativity. “I write all of my music and I love co-writing with some of my talented songwriter friends. All of my original music truly comes from a real, organic, and genuine place. I normally take my experiences of whatever I’m going through and try to translate that into music when I get to the studio. My cowriters and I will sit and talk about what I’m feeling and then the lyrics come organically from that point.”
70
While commanding space and privacy from the world as a bourgeoning artist, Aurora embraces her vulnerability. “I think for me, I like to share my most vulnerable stories through my music. I think if you listen to my songs, you’ll understand a lot about my experiences. However, in terms of privacy, I guess you could say I’m a private person in the sense that I like to keep certain things to myself when it comes to my personal life. In general, I aim to carry myself in a classy way in everything I do.” With genuine gratitude and beaming of positive light, this angelic voiced, “girl-next-door-but-extra” vision before us bestowed these words: “Your journey is beautifully and uniquely yours. Be grateful for it all - the happy times, the sad times, the love, the heartbreak, the successes, the failures, and everything in between. Life is about the journey. It’s all about the experience. And it’s a beautiful one.”

An immense bond between mother and daughter, matriarch Christine Arnoult and daughter Constance “coco Arnoult discuss family, fashion and their relationship on and off social meda. By Heather Marie Combs

n America, we have no shortage of reality royal families, like the thirteen-year reign of the Kardashian klan; so we decided to look to Paris and came across mother, daughter duo Christine and Constance Arnoult - taking the Parisian fashion scene by storm…together. No surprise the camera adores them, but we had to know, behind social media, what are the mother and daughter like in real life? It all becomes pretty apparent within minutes. Regardless of whoever is really in charge when it comes to their charm in fashion, what is abundantly clear is the amazing bond between this mother and her daughter. So the matching initials must be an intended decision? “Not at all,” laughed fair-faced Christine. “Is it pure coincidence or maybe the sign of an immense bond that is found even in our initials ... who knows?” The beautiful Coco is a former ballet dancer, art lover, French model, and a need-to-know influencer. The stunning Christine is a working mom and wife by day, but her passion for fashion and the coveted bond with her daughter has led to a flourishing dynamic duo booking mother-daughter campaigns in the industry they both adore. “We are lucky to have a very special relationship. We are very similar in so many ways, and we are always so happy to share those memories together,” heartened Constance. Agreeing, “working with Coco is always fun and thrilling. Because we have very busy schedules in our day to day lives, we do not really have time to see each other often. So it is a great mother/daughter bonding time, complicity and laughs are guaranteed,” chimed Christine.
to promote culture in general, to encourage people to take time to dive into a book, an exhibition, or a ballet,” shared the blonde beauty. Not the first little girl to dream of the sought-after title “ballerina”, it is the visual draw to tell a story that intrigued Coco. “When I go to Paris Opera House, I love how ballet dancers are complete artists. I’m always mesmerized by their ability to be storytellers through movement, amazing technique, and emotion,” shared the dancer. Now fully exposed to the industry of fashion through modeling and her unconventional path as a modern day influencer, Constance expressed the necessary role fashion plays in a true performance. “Fashion and ballet often work together as you can see during Paris Opera House opening gala. Costumes this year were designed by Chanel. It’s a real challenge for designers to adapt their creations to the needs of the performers.” Since moving to Paris Constance notes the evolvement of her style, easily summarized as “less is more”. With that classic, fresh-faced and pure beauty of a no-makup-makeup look a noted signature of the classic European woman - both Arnoult girls gravitate to minimal and effortless styles in their glamour and their couture. “Back in the days, I was wearing more sophisticated clothes,” shared Constance, “so maybe my style is more simple and more efficient now [that I live in Paris.] I try to keep a chic and elegant style, but I especially try to wear outfits in which I am comfortable. To do this, you have to give the impression that you didn’t think too much about what you are wearing. I am quite petite, so I like playing with volumes and lengths: a beautiful high-waisted pant, a padded-shoulder blazer that is properly structured and well-cut; or for a dressier outfit: a very long dress with high heels and a pretty waistband to highlight the waist.” With a few extra years to discover her go-to style and earned right to power dress like the boss babe she is, Christine is keeping the 70’s alive with flared pants and heeled boots. “I have been a fan of [a flare pant] for years. I wear these flares with heeled boots, a blouse or a big sweater. I also like structured dresses which enhance the silhouette a lot! My favorite outfit is a black Yves Saint-Laurent pantsuit that I had the chance to wear thanks to ‘a dress for an evening’ in which I felt both beautiful and perfectly comfortable.”
“We are lucky to have a very special relationship. We are very similar in so many ways, and we are always so happy to share those memories together,”
Turning to Constance we were eager to learn more about life as a former ballet dancer. A deliberate and dedicated passion with integral notes and nuances of fashion displayed through detailed and decisive costuming, a career in fashion seems like a natural path. Although not one foreseen by young Constance. “I didn’t really plan to work in the fashion industry. The main part of my life has been dedicated to ballet. I used to practice 14 hours a week and the plan was to become professional. Nevertheless, I’ve always been fascinated by the fashion universe: I see it as another stage to express myself. As an influencer, I would be delighted

So what brought these two leading ladies to center stage together? “That just happened naturally after the French brand FRAICHE asked us to make our first campaign together. That probably just strengthened our relationship even more!” beamed Coco. “I was really excited by the idea of shooting with my daughter,” chimed Christine. “There is something fascinating when you are able to work in front of the camera with your daughter. I did some modeling jobs when I was younger, but never in such of fashion and such a big project. It was a real pleasure and when we have the opportunity to work on collaborative projects, we do not hesitate.” The key to their success as a mother and daughter team, they are passionate in their adoration for fashion.
and family alike, Constance has much to be thankful for and showed genuine gratitude for the unconventional life she is cultivating. “I’m deeply grateful for this every single day, I’ll never take this for granted, and I’ll continue to work hard to make this perennial. I’m aware that the fashion industry and social media are always evolving so fast, and I’m really happy that people are appreciating the content I’m producing. I have the chance to be surrounded by amazing people, especially by my parents, who are keeping me grounded and who raised me with great values. They taught me to put goodwill, empathy and determination in all the projects I am part of. For this new year, I would like to challenge and push myself to take risks and to develop my own projects.”
The mother of not just one, but two beautiful girls striving in their respected fields, Christine was proud to share her admiration of both young ladies as we reminisced the end of a decade. “What I’m most proud of is my family. My adorable husband and my two daughters: Constance, but also Victoire who is studying law. She is a humanist and also an adventurer at heart. She will put all her energy and strength at the service of others. It’s always an immense joy to be all together.” With the chance to be surrounded by an array of creators, friends
It is a rare situation when members of the same family find themselves in the same position. Collaborating in an industry they both love, it is evident that that is what keeps them grounded - the love and support. A united front, let’s just say we cannot wait to see what the lovely Arnoult ladies have in store. New adventures? They hope! Or maybe a very special project with an iconic French store. “We can’t tell you more,” teased Coco and Christine.

hen it comes to interiors and set design – Dello Studio does it differently. The interdisciplinary London-based design studio graciously draws inspiration from eras, cultures and observations, garnering global attention. Glances at the studio’s largely minimal and monotone presence across social media displays a modern necessity: ambitious perspectives. Charlotte Taylor is a stone plinth. Oscar Piccolo is a glass vase. These are the descriptions interior designer, set designer and creative director used when asked to describe the bodies and minds behind the space. Having both studied design at Goldsmith University in London, Dello Studio, Piccolo insists ideas came about as a necessity to join forces and create ambitious work. “We recognized a shared interest in subject matter, working with scale and going against traditional design norms. As a rather impulsive decision, we left Goldsmiths and applied to Chelsea College of Arts as a collective, where we are currently completing our final year in Fine Art. Dello means ‘of the/from the’ in Italian. It signifies our journey from design studios and our roots in the field.” Nothing about Dello Studio is ordinary. Blending worlds across the pond, Taylor reflects on the signature look and style of the studio. Stone, glass, marble, and wood make up the basis of this unique, standalone creative direction. “Our style is constantly evolving and adapting to what we find interesting at the time. Our current area of exploration is focused Photographs and Location: Paloma Wool on raw materials such as stone and marble, this phase was largely inspired by the likes of Noguchi, The Flintstones, and ancient monuments.” Their education and frustration of the constraints of both design and fine art alone have influenced both Taylor and Piccolo in merging the two as one entity. Looking to expand to other areas of design, the Dello duo expresses interest in fashion. “We are currently working on some unusual accessories and are soon to launch our Dello workers tee. Since our style and approach is adapting daily, working with a range of brands has allowed us to explore space and object from different perspectives, pushing us to discover new materials, pallets, and compositions. Our inspirations have been consistent since the advent of the studio, it’s interesting for us to apply them to various clients and projects and how the outcomes differ,” Taylor says. In many ways,
88
the design follows – many times will inherit – trends and cycles alike fashion. Belief interior design, be it, an expression of oneself. With countless collaborations throughout the studio, growth has been the greatest takeaway amongst these creatives. “All of our collaborations are integral to the growth and essence of the studio, collaboration is at the roots of the studio by nature of us to coming together. Adding new perspectives and design opinions to the dynamics of the studio adds a lot to a project. Additionally, people are very important to us, we see it more as the friends we meet than the project itself.” Piccolo notes London’s architectural influence within the curations, his sights lock in on global art and interior design. “Surprisingly, with the projects we have worked on, we have noticed there is more an international style that adapts to each countries necessities and cultures.” Ahead of developing trends, Dello Studio believes in the acknowledgement, not the following of trending modes in design. “Our ethos is concentrating on our style and what excites us. We are aware of what is trending and what’s not, however, due to the majority of our influences based in the past we don’t rely too much on current movements in design,” says Taylor. Their favorite at the moment? “A trend we relate to is the current rediscovery of raw materials and the love for objects. We are not particularly fond of the ongoing obsession and accessibility to mass manufacture furniture.” Marketing off interior design, that Piccolo call a gift, challenging inspiration is just a tip towards designing one’s interior. “We live in a time where the location is no longer an issue, taking advantage of the brilliant online furniture markets and auctions is a great way to find unique pieces.” Though both designers have empty homes at the moment, Taylor and Piccolo agree Dello Studio’s current furniture collections with M.A.H is and should be on everyone’s design radar. Inspired by Luis Barragan – spaces displaying great consideration and attention to detail – Dello Studio strives to achieve the same throughout all projects and collaborations. Looking forward to the possibilities of this new year, the duo was expertly vague regarding the future of Dello Studio implying, “More interiors and larger-scale projects, but we are however trying to keep things fun and have a few surprises ahead,” smirked the designers.

THE RELEVANCE with Tyler
Shields
Photographer, writer, and director Tyler Shields sits down with us to discuss life before art, his groundbreaking collection of photographs, the ins-and-outs of using social media and finding his muse. By Heather Marie Combs

aking serious headway in Hollywood as a fine art photographer, writer and director, Shields uses each carefully curated project to deliver a visual experience always open for interpretation. “I love having the ability to make something and let the viewer create their own interoperation. Art is a partnership between the creator and the viewer.” Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida as an active youth, skateboarding and riding motorcycles, the visionary knew as little to nothing about photography, art and fashion when he picked up his first camera. “Photography came to me in a break up,” exposed Shields. “I took a photo of an empty closest after the girlfriend left and I was hooked pretty much from then on. It gave me a release that I had never known before; there is such a freedom to it.” And in an industry of constant change and uncertainty, it is photography that will quite literally still time in a state of permanent relevance to someone. More than a marker of time or a memento of innovation and greatness, visual creation is an art connecting not only the creator to the viewer, but also the creator to their potential muse. An elusive word, not to be used lightly, but used to value the inspiration created. “I need people who are fearless, who have the same goal as me to make something that lives beyond the both of us; so when I find people who get that and want to help I push them and myself to make something greater than us,” exposed Shields.
for immediately and with finality: “I would like to take this moment and apologize for absolutely nothing.”
Never a better generation to be a creator, with the rise of a wide array of digital platforms to showcase one’s work, there is a fine line often blurred when creating for the masses, rather than for the vision. A concept Shields is all too familiar with as he shared his genuine insight to the rise of social media. “Social media is shaping the way people make images, sadly not for the best all the time. We can get so caught up in the ‘like’ culture, but content is the enemy of art. So I love the ability to share work, but I hate the idea that you have to share what gets likes.” Leading us to our next question, one often difficult for some to answer, it is with no surprise this man answers what he is most unapologetic
Always behind the scenes and holding more precedence than often realized, understanding the history and staying up to date with the latest endeavors in fashion can be a key component in capturing the envisioned. “Fashion is the difference between something being timeless or out of style in a week. You have to always look at fashion trends when you plan a series.” Looking to 2020 with excitement and eager eyes, Shields is using the new year to explore the things he has never done, and some things that have not been done in photography. Leaving us with these words, it is important to remember: “It is a marathon, not a sprint.”
It is also true what they say, “It is all about who you know.” As a prominent and growing director and photographer in this industry, the plethora of celebrities, brands and creatives to collaborate with span far and wide, so how does one choose who to share your art with? “It all happens in an organic way. I meet someone, they introduce me to another person or people just message me. I love it when someone sends me a message about how something I have made speaks to them and how they want to be a part of it, that lets me know they are not just seeing I have a following, rather they are inspired to make something.” That being said, it is safe to say that no week is the same in this line of work. “One week you are in London with your photo in the window at Sotheby’s and the next week you are in a swamp with ten actresses and an 8 by 10 camera and the week after that you are in the lab making Platinum Palladium prints. It is ever changing and a lot of fun,” smiled Shields. Traveling the world for work and in search of inspiration, this photographer never leaves the States without an American staple, A1 steak sauce, “it is a must!” laughed Shields. “London is my home away from home. I love it there and my second family is there. That’s where my gallery career really took off with the support of Daniel and Jaqcui who own [urban contemporary art gallery] Imitate Modern.”
“I need people who are fearless, who have the same goal as me to make something that lives beyond the both of us.”

THE
Story of CLAIRE
107
108
W
e have all wondered what it would be like to travel around the world, create beautifully curated content and work with the brands we love; but what is it really like? Over the last couple of years, social media sensation and Amsterdam’s “It” girl in the States, Claire Rose, has made this dream a reality. Her secret? Less is more. Finding happiness in the simpler things, living effortlessly in the mecca destination of the United States, New York City, is no step short of opulent clothing, five-star restaurants and other post-worthy content. Discovering her love for the fashion world at an early age, it is her experience with a hearing impairment that sparked her interest in the visual art of apparel curation and insta-worthy composition. “I was born with a hearing impairment,” heartened the influencer, “so naturally from an early age I was very dependent on visual stimulation. I was always observing people’s behavior, the way they dressed and how that made them feel. I started concentrating on the things I could do, instead of the things I couldn’t do. Never take no for an answer.” Finding inspiration for her own style choices, this warm toned minimalist looks as far as the streets and city subways to old movies to vintage photos of her first muse, her mom, for the next signature look.
With both dream destinations to call home offering drastically different lifestyles, what enticed the radical move from bucket-list Amsterdam to iconic New York? In no need of a pause, Claire explained, “I’ve always loved New York. It’s a city full of life, excitement and well, just like that famous song goes, it’s a concrete jungle where dreams are made. There is an entrepreneurial and ‘survival of the fittest’ energy: go big or go home. Luckily my husband got the opportunity to work in New York, so we were able to move here.” Falling flawlessly into this less than conventional career of “social media influencer” Claire most values the freedom to do whatever she wants, wherever she wants, whenever she wants. “Social media gave me the possibility to be my own ‘stylist’, ‘travel agency’, ‘model’, ‘creative director’, ‘photographer’, and ‘makeup artist, all at the same time!” Working all these demanding roles herself can make for extremely hectic days, typically including meetings with brands and PR agencies, cleaning out emails, organizing concepts/ shoots, designing and creating mood boards for capsule collections, organizing trips, styling must-see outfits, traveling for shoots/events and carrying a million packages home from the mailbox.
“Don’t live your life on social media, live it here and now, and if you feel like sharing it, share it.”
Stocking her lust-worthy wardrobe with the perfect blend of soft muted tones, you will no doubt discover the sustainable and the timeless. “My go-to look is a Levi’s, tank top, blazer, Gucci loafers and a cute bag, but something effortless chic. My go-to beauty look is sun kissed skin with the ‘I-spend-30-minutes-on-mymake-up-without-noticing-it’ look,’” laughed Claire. This may seem confusing to most, makeup you don’t notice – what’s the point? “In the States, women put a lot of effort in trying to look perfect and pristine. European fashion does not have that sense of shiny perfection. [In Europe] women embrace their imperfections and avoid trying too hard. The makeup aesthetic tends to be very clean and simple.”
Even with this new-found “fame”, Claire is always careful to remain herself. “I’m a crazy internet person who posts pictures of herself... all the time,” unapologetically smirked the influencer. As adventurous as she is driven, consistently generating authentic and compelling content at such frequency can take a lot of creativity and inspiration. “Journaling helps me a lot, and whenever I feel uninspired or unmotivated, I go offline for a few days and spend some quality time with friends and family, in a good book or in the outdoors. I guess the secret is not to care too much.” Her best advice? “Don’t live your life on social media, live it here and now, and if you feel like sharing it, share it. Life is a journey of falling and climbing – do one thing that scares you every day!” So what can we expect from cute and cultured Claire Rose in 2020? “Something with my own collections, beautiful destinations, and dogs. Beyond excited!”
