By Angie Anderson Times are changing and if you have not already embraced the desire to learn about the contents of your pantry, as well as your fruit bowl, now is the time. Do not let yourself fall behind in the movement of elevated standards. Take off your blinders and start implementing some new eating habits today. The explosive growth in organic produce and rise in popularity of buying local are a direct result of people who are literally fed up with being served food that contains ingredients that we consider unheard of to consume. Let us focus our energy on what is NOT in the food and get back to the basics of what food should be.

Have you thought about the high rise in food allergies that are developing in families throughout America? It’s almost rare to come across a family that does not have at least one food allergy stricken individual to look out for. If you start looking at the ingredients listed on the items in your grocery cart, you will discovered a crazy long list of things that you will most likely need to google to know what they are. This can be unsettling.

It does, however, affirm in my mind how so many allergies are on the rise in the first place. People trusted that food was just food.

As grown individuals, we have developed very strong eating habits that range from the stores we shop at, the items we choose, food preparation, snack food choices, fast food indulgences, and eating out. Habits that are so well established are hard to break. The good news is that with the power of knowledge you have the ability to start somewhere and keep going. We all want to evolve, become wiser, stronger, healthier individuals. No one says, “I’m good with what I know, I do not desire to learn any more in my life.” Easily, we can start making changes that range from tiny decisions to large lifestyle directions. One month committing to a change can set you on your way to establishing a new habit. Keep that up for 2 months and you’ve paved your way to success!

Changes you can easily adapt to and start implementing now: The supplier. Shop at a new grocery store; putting yourself in an unfamiliar place will help you change what you automatically put into your cart. Be smart about this and make sure you have plenty of time on this first trip.

Again, we want to focus on what is not in the food instead of getting wrapped-up in the debate of labels, statistics, and disagreements. Setbacks are destined to disrupt our onward path. Frustration and infuriation will arise when you learn that something you believed to be good was in fact not at all. It’s hard to trust organizations and people who say something is not proven to do you harm. Who wants to wait around for proof! Forgive yourself for the past and do your own research, make your own decisions, empower yourself to take back the control of what you do not want to eat. Don’t be discouraged; it’s a possible feat!

Substitutions: • Replace butter with coconut oil or avocado oil for cooking and baking • Replace table salt with Pink Himalayan Sea Salt • Replace refined sugar with Agave or Honey, even just for half the listed amount of sugar • Buy a water filtration system or have good water delivered to you weekly for drinking and cooking, without fluoride • Use fresh herbs when cooking to boost flavor and nutrition while using less salt Make things fun for yourself and the family. Much can be said for taking on a positive approach when implementing these awesome changes to your household. In order to be successful, planning is needed so that the transition is smooth, and fun should be sprinkled amidst the journey.

Working-out as a family

Talking about health benefits from food; knowledge is power When planning, start with one or two things that seem important to you and grow gradually from there. Try and focus on the long-term goals, not just today and tomorrow. What do you want to accomplish this year with your eating habits?

What is important to pass on to your children or others close to you about eating healthier? We have a lifetime to heighten our improvements. However, today is the day to set them in motion.

To supplement your new habits it is beneficial to alter the

environment slightly, to create a brighter atmosphere which will support your new lifestyle. Clean the fridge and organize the pantry to enhance your desire to put healthier items in them.

Create a clutter-free kitchen that will boost your desire to cook differently. Purchase new chopping knives; they will excite you to chop veggies and fresh herbs.

Be open to change. Open your heart and mind to the positive benefits that will in turn, reward you for the efforts you put forth today. Thank yourself for the new changes daily. Recognize how being mindful of what you put in your body transforms into nutrients, and then energy. This positive energy supports your well-being and feeds your heart and soul.

Creating a System of Parenting the Self in Loving Ways

From the beginning of our experiences, most of us in this culture anyway, are taught that most wisdom and knowledge comes from outside of us. Our parents, who were taught this themselves from their parents, teach us that wisdom and knowledge comes from those around us instead of within us. In positive ways, those around us will provide positive reinforcement like praise to motivate us to “perform” the expected ways. In severe cases and all too often, negative reinforcement is used to shame a behavior or person to behave the expected way, which does extensive damage to our emotional, psychological, and spiritual self.

Our sense of security in our environment is harmed along with our relationship with ourselves. This relationship with ourself is the secret ingredient to all of our experiences because it

determines how we perceive and interpret our reality.

It determines how much joy and love we are willing and able to express toward ourself and others.

This leads to how much happiness we experience, or whether or not we can engage in activities and relationships that bring us peace, joy and love.

Being your own parents or parenting yourself in positive ways can mitigate any negative experiences you’ve ever had and lead to a life of happiness, joy and peace because the relationship with yourself is healthy.

Being your own parent means that you learn to identify what your needs are, and meet them.

Seems simple in theory but challenges can arise because we do not know what our needs are. This is because, for many of us, our needs were not consistently met or validated in healthy ways by our parents.

So, to meet your needs, let’s begin to understand where they arise. First, identify or be mindful of any uncomfortable or unpleasant situations or experiences that bring up any of the strong feelings that imbalance you, such as fear, anger, sadness, hopelessness, insecurity, jealousy, etc. Second, feel those feelings, fully with your whole being, while parenting yourself with the largest amount of love and compassion you can fathom. For example, when I’m afraid or feel fear, I imagine my benevolent-internal parents holding me and telling me everything’s going to be alright. It’s important to surrender or allow myself to embrace the belief system that I am safe and loved in that moment.

Once you’ve identified your feelings, it is important to dissect them by exploring if there are other emotions present. For example, when feeling anger, you’re going to want to think about the other feelings involved; possibly resentment, hopelessness, or hurt. There are always partner feelings with anger. We therapists call anger a vehicle emotion because it carries other feelings with it. Understanding all aspects of what you are feeling provides beautifully compassionate parenting to yourself by validating your feelings. You are simply saying, “These are my feelings” without excuses, shame or complaint (victimization). You are bringing a wisdom to your experiences by being fully present with them.

From here, you can begin to parent yourself by exploring the why’s of your feelings, your experiences, and possibly the other participant’s feelings. Healthy parenting involves absolutely no judgment or blaming (for either party) and allows an open, compassionate and safe exploration of the experiences. It is important to note that the feelings of the experience do not go away; they are simply honored for why they are felt, and

through the discovery of sitting with or parenting yourself, you’ll gain wisdom.

For example, you might learn that your boundaries were crossed, or that the situation reminds you of a similarly hurtful experience from your past, or that you might have interpreted the situation or other person incorrectly. For instance, when I feel angry I know that somewhere I’ve allowed my boundaries to be crossed. By understanding how I feel and why I feel it, I can figure out where I want my boundary to be in the future and set it. I allow myself with attention and energy to understand myself, to take responsibility for myself, and meet my needs.

The most exciting benefit of being your own parent is the growth of the relationship with yourself. By parenting yourself with love, patience and compassion in every situation, you can become your own best friend. Really!

Imagine being so excited that you are sitting on your front porch, because you can sit with yourself on the front porch.

Imagine looking in the mirror and smiling with joy because you love being, looking, and ‘talking’ with yourself. It’s the most liberating feeling; not something I feel every moment of every day yet, but I do feel it. I have a complete knowing that I will get to a place where I will have joyful loving experiences in every moment because that is my intent and I work at it peacefully, every day.

Stress and Obesity

April 16 is National Stress Awareness Day. Many of us, in an attempt to help manage stress, eat our favorite “comfort foods”, often to excess. Do such foods, however, actually offer meaningful and lasting solutions? In 1966, a Palm Beach Post article stated: “Adults, when under severe emotional stress, turn to what could be called, ‘comfort food’ -- food associated with the security of childhood, like mother’s poached eggs or famous chicken soup.” Over 50 years later, we appear as a society to still cope through questionable food choices.

If your daily stress has led to an unhealthy love affair with sugar, oil, bread, pasta, and cheese, you are not alone. Millions of Americans every year face chronic health challenges due to the seduction and immediate gratification of comfort foods. The Oxford Dictionary defines stress as, “a state of mental or emotional strain or tension, resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.”

While society typically frowns on alcohol and illicit substances to relieve this strain and tension, more tolerance is usually offered for food addiction.

If one is able to occasionally enjoy comfort foods without guilt and in reasonable portions, then these foods may not be as problematic. Eating to excess while stressed, however, virtually guarantees the outcome of increased obesity around the abdomen. In addition to the abdominal fat-promoting stress hormone cortisol, the chemical “Neuropeptide Y” is released from nerve endings throughout the body during times of ongoing stress at work or at home. In scientific studies, Neuropeptide Y causes inflammation in fat cells, and allows more fat cells to develop. The addition of 6,000 calorie eating binges featuring sugar and oil to mitigate stress in this setting leads to increased body fat as the fat cells fill up with our bad dietary choices.

Finding healthier ways to cope with stress such as exercise, meditation, yoga, reiki, and tai-chi may sound less tempting than macaroni and cheese, onion rings, or chocolate ice cream. As extra weight in the midsection of our bodies increases the risk for diabetes, heart attack, stroke, and other illness, it will become important for anyone using high volumes of comfort food as a significant coping tool to reassess the true value of such an approach. It may not be easy at first, but sharing a dysfunctional reliance on food to cope with someone you trust, such as a Health Coach, and working on solutions is a great way to start.

Homeopathy Introduction

Law of Minimum: The law is based on the intake of medicine; in its dilute form will act as a catalytic agent to stimulate the defense mechanism of the body.

The small amount of dosage helps in allowing the drug to build-up in the body so it can be used to heal the conditions with a minimum amount of damage to the human body.

By Nancy Lynn The word “Homeopathy” is derived from the Greek words, “homoios” meaning similar and “pathos” meaning suffering.

This form of healing is based on the concept that “Like is cured, by like.” It has been determined that treating a disease with a small amount of medicine that given in a large dose would produce to a healthy person symptoms similar to the disease, hence the name, Homeopathy, “similar suffering”.

Dr. Samuel Hahnemann of Leipzig, Germany, developed homeopathic medicine in the early 19th century.

Being a highly educated pharmacist and a medical translator, he presented, “Organon der Rationellen Heilkunde” in 1810, now considered the primary basis of the homeopathic bible. Today, we build upon the principles laid down

by Dr. Hahnemann; some of those principles are found below. Spiritualist and practitioners in the medical field are working towards building on the foundation of homeopathy in hopes of finding new ways of treating patients.

Something found in homeopathic practices that differs from traditional medical practices is treating the patient as a whole, not just the disease. The doses of medicine taken are smaller, therefore expose the body to fewer toxins. Patients are treated mentally and emotionally for their symptoms, as well as for their physical symptoms.

This method will stimulate the body to heal itself by strengthening the immune system. A healthy immune system will provide the individual with a better state of health.

Although homeopathy is a growing field and is becoming more popular in use, it however is not a substitute for traditional medicine. Some of these remedies are not effective in treating certain conditions

with some individuals. Homeopathic medicines are inappropriate for lifethreatening diseases, such as heart attack, paralytic stroke, meningitis, and diabetic coma. These conditions require immediate treatment. However, homeopathic medicines might be able to assist after the condition has been treated the traditional way. Prescribing the right homeopathic medicines takes a lot of time and patience. The right remedy has to be found for the required symptom. Homeopathic medicines do not have any standard remedy and should be used with a doctor’s input or knowledge.

We are not advocating this medicine in lieu of traditional medicine.

Using Crystals with the Sacral Chakra

This month we will be discussing the sacral chakra. The Sanskrit name is, Svadhisthana, which means, sweetness. The sacral chakra is located two finger widths below the belly button and is the center of our creativity and pleasure. It deals with our emotions, creativity, sensuality, movement, change, intimacy, socializing, connection and sexual relationships. The sacral chakra also governs over the sacrum, genitals, knees, hips, lower back and reproductive organs.

The vibrant warm, orange hues of the sacral chakra stimulate our passions and creative energies. The sacral chakra deals a lot with creation, creativity, creating and reproduction; it wants to create and rarely lets anything stand in its way. When we tone or chant specific sounds, they can also open the chakras; the tone for the sacral chakra is “ououou” as in who or you.

The element for the sacral chakra is water, which makes sense because it deals with the emotions, creativity and movement.

We move upward from the base chakra, being grounded and one with the earth to the movement and flow of water and our emotions. Some of the deities that work with this chakra are the goddess’ that work with pleasure and passion, such as Aphrodite or Quan Yin. Our sacral chakra is in direct correlation with how smoothly our emotions are flowing, and how we’re letting go to the power of our creative energies. Blocks in our sacral chakra can be likened to a pond with a dam; when the dam is blocked with emotional debris, no water or energy can get through. Emotions have a powerful energy behind them; the Native Americans believe that the word emotion means, “energy in motion”.

In the movie The Secret, they talk about how beneficial it is to manifest using the powerful energies of our emotions, especially happiness and gratitude. Because the sacral chakra is our pleasure chakra, essential oils that have aphrodisiac qualities will open the sacral chakra, igniting our passionate creative sensual sexual energies. On the emotional level, aphrodisiacs smell good and make us feel good, helping to alleviate depression, lift our mood, as well as clear the emotions. Foods that are beneficial for maintaining a healthy sacral chakra are liquids and foods that have a lot of liquid such as watermelon, fruits, as well as good filtered water.

Stones that are beneficial for the sacral chakra are Orange

Calcite which cleanses the lower chakras of lower vibrational energies, and alleviates fear and depression. Carnelian enhances our motivation, creativity and vitality; it anchors us in reality. Fire Opal enhances our highest truest self, self worth, personal power and awakens our inner passions. It is a very transformative stone stabilizing the emotions. Orange Kyanite opens and aligns the chakras, enhances our intuition, alleviates confusion, illusion, blockages, anger, stress and frustration.

Moonstone enhances our intuition, empathy, all of our psychic abilities and clairvoyance, and calms the emotions and stress.

Sardonyx strengthens willpower, integrity, self-control, stamina and vigor. Sunstone cleanses all the chakras, brings a sunshine joy to life, enhances our leadership skills and allows the true self to shine through.

Zincite strengthens our personal power, creativity, manifesting, stimulates the kundalini, intuition and re-energizes the physical body. The Crystals can be used to open, clear, balance and strengthen the sacral chakra; only one is needed -- hold the crystal on the location of the chakra for 5-15 minutes.

Other ideas you can do to open the sacral chakra are taking a bath, go swimming, talk to someone honestly about how you are feeling, journal, be creative, dance, do something that will bring you great pleasure, something that you’ve been holding off on for awhile. Also, tone or visualize your sacral chakra overflowing with vibrant hues of orange.

A great meditation to use to get in touch with the sacral chakra and your emotions is to visualize yourself lying on a beach. It’s a warm day; the temperature is comfortable with the sun shining on you. You feel the gentle lapping of the water coming up over your toes and then going back to be one with the water again. Now, think of an emotion you’ve been feeling that you want to let go of. As you feel this emotion at its very center, inhale and feel the water coming up over your head and washing over you. As you exhale, feel the wave going back down to your feet. Continue doing this with each in and out breath, allowing the water to take away all of your emotions.

When you are done, feel or see the water once again resting calmly at the bottom of your feet, once again being part of the universal ebb and flow of life.

Becoming aware of our emotions alleviates their existence, as well as helping us remember how easy it is to change our thoughts and emotions by thinking about something else. Have fun!

Why Do Young People Use Drugs and Alcohol?

The years between adolescence and 25 are the most challenging ever. Young people are vulnerable, but curious.

They face exciting challenges and difficult hurdles. These years produce great emotional highs, and at times devastating lows. So how do young people make it—some turn to alcohol or drugs! Kids from intact families with strong values and limits tend to survive these years fairly intact, even with some experimenting with alcohol or drugs.

On the other hand, kids from broken or dysfunctional homes, where alcohol, drugs and fights are the norm, they’re left with few coping skills, often feeling alone and afraid. These kids often self-medicate with alcohol or drugs, and many start using marijuana as early as middle school. Later they may sneak prescription medications from an adult, or alcohol from a parent’s bar.

Many young people use substances to drown out the pain of abuse, fights, or loneliness, or because they are shy or socially awkward, and some believe drugs and alcohol makes them more mature and they’ll be more popular— peer pressure is huge!

Research shows that when medicinal or recreational marijuana becomes legal by state, the use of marijuana by young people grows exponentially—maybe because it’s thought to be medicine, or perhaps because the more dangerous effects of early marijuana use tends to be minimized in the press. However, in recent years, more and more young people are choosing heroin—it’s cheaper, faster, purer, and more readily available than ever. Heroin use has grown very quickly and many young people are addicted, with an average age of 23.

Today more young people die of heroin overdoses than are killed in car accidents or by guns!

Another huge issue associated with early drug use is that drugs and alcohol change the brain! No matter how long a young person uses drugs—smoking or ingesting marijuana, drinking alcohol,

smoking or shooting heroin, or crack, or meth, or cocaine—all drug use interferes with the brain’s chemistry and many of these changes are permanent. And the younger the individual begins using drugs or alcohol, the more irreversible damage can occur, including diseases as devastating as schizophrenia.

In addition, drugs deplete the supply of dopamine and serotonin, the neurotransmitters responsible for happiness. So when a person uses drugs to mask depression, he or she is, in fact, increasing the likelihood of feeling depressed. Drug use decreases the release of the neurotransmitters that bring feelings of happiness. Lowered levels of dopamine and serotonin can also slow thinking, cause impairments in learning and memory, and tend to increase the incidence of depression and suicidality. Another important, but rarely discussed effect of early drug use is that substance abuse by high school students can stunt growth. Research shows that boys who smoked marijuana in their early teens were 4.6” shorter at age 20 than boys who waited until they were 21 to use alcohol or drugs.

No matter why a young person uses or abuses substances—peer pressure, to belong to the in-crowd, to mask depression, anxiety, or shyness, to selfmedicate a painful home life—anyone can become addicted and addiction leads to losses—of friendships, college entrance, jobs, and the ultimate loss— their life, to suicide or overdose.

Creating a Better Life

I was a rising star in the hospitality industry. I had it all -- Career, Great Car, Super House and a High Level of Success. I truly had it all, including a lot of STRESS, FATIGUE and SLEEPLESS NIGHTS. My work schedule was hectic and I was in constant worry mode; there was little room for joy.

I pushed myself to achieve what I thought was success. I grew up wrongly believing: Hard Work + Sacrifice = Success and Happiness.

One day, everything came to a crashing halt. I collapsed and was rushed to the hospital. I knew that something had to change. I remembered skimming through a book by Louise L. Hay years earlier about the concept, Your thoughts create your reality.

When I got home from the hospital, I carefully reread her book, “You Can Heal Your Life”. I could see the truth in her words and was able to see that my thoughts were clearly creating my current reality. My stressing and worrying created more things for me to stress over and worry about. My life-long definition of success and happiness was making me sick and unhappy.

If I truly wanted positive change in my life, I would need to start reframing my negative thoughts into positive ones and re-define, Success and Happiness.

Since I had been inspired by Louise Hay’s book, I wondered if there were people using her philosophy that could help me. That’s when I discovered a Heal Your Life® community of workshop leaders and coaches that were ready to help. I found the Heal Your Life® workshop and signed-up to attend the next one.

The workshop was amazing and as I put into practice what I had learned, I began to see real changes in my daily

Just about everyone has dealt with some form of trauma in their life. Mental Health modalities and technologies are constantly changing to help people overcome these traumas.

Shalva Adult and Child Psychiatry recently introduced EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, developed by Francine Shapiro, Ph.d. It is a very important tool in the toolbox of any licensed EMDRIA certified therapist in addressing panic and trauma disorders.

This therapy is a research-based technique used to help the brain reprocess and integrate unprocessed memories. People who suffer from PTSD have unprocessed memories and when put through a series of EMDR sessions, can be reprocessed to reintegrate properly, which means the “current attachment or emotional trigger” is neutralized. The trigger comes from a present incident, but many times its development is found in childhood and related to attachment injuries. EMDR emulates REM sleep -- our deepest sleep at a theta level where the subconscious mind processes information to heal and solve problems that are going on in our lives. In the process, isolated stored memories are integrated into the rest of the memory network allowing them to be stored properly in the brain and processed appropriately. In many cases, this process would resolve the emotional dissonance and address the triggers.

She trains therapists in this effective technique in the treatment of PTSD and other disorders that really alter the physical and emotional reactivity to old maladaptive attachment injuries, created usually from early childhood. When a young child experiences a powerful feeling in the negative that is somehow attachment related, this could be a non-event that is perceived in the mind of a young child as sentinel. Later in life, something springs back the feeling which connects to the sentinel thought and creates reinforcement to the response and reaction. Life is full of stressors; a sentinel event occurs and the reinforcement is strengthened further. EMDR can be utilized to go back to the first event and reprocess it so that the memory is neutralized but not forgotten.

to anything,” or “You’re not college material,” or “Can’t you do anything right,” etc., and you kept hearing this message over and over, you would most likely start to believe it. Very young children do not question what they are told, and the messages, whether true or not, go right to the subconscious mind.

What do you think life would look like if you always wore a pair of green tinted glasses? Obviously, the world would look green to you. You would believe this is how things are unless someone told you that you were wearing these glasses or until something happened and you took the glasses off. You would never know that the world is not green. Many of us go through life seeing things in a certain way, convinced that is how life is, and never suspect this may not be accurate. Our subconscious mind is similar to this tinted pair of glasses.

As adults, many beliefs are buried in your subconscious mind and you are not aware of them. If someone were to tell you that one of your beliefs was not accurate, you would probably not believe them. We all have what is called the “critical part of the conscious mind,” or the “gatekeeper.” This part of our mind compares new information to what we already believe, and if the new information does not agree with our prior beliefs, we will not accept it. Our subconscious mind does not take in new information that contradicts what it already believes to be true.

As an example, if you were told as a child that people are not to be trusted, and a friend said to you that most people are honest or could be depended upon, you would probably not believe the person. The “gatekeeper” would not let the new information in.

The problem is that many of the beliefs that are contained in our subconscious mind are not only inaccurate, but they are also quite harmful. As an example, if a parent or sibling or some other authority figure used to tell you, “You’ll never amount

Louise Hay, a very famous author and one who has worked with and helped a great many people, states that almost everyone she has worked with comes in with the belief that he or she is not good enough.

Can you imagine what this belief would do to a person? If you believe you are not adequate, you will not take many risks.

Where would you get the courage to ask for a raise, or to start your own business, or to look for a partner who seems to have it all together? Obviously you would not do any of these, for you would not feel you deserve them or that you could handle them. In addition, most people don’t just have one or two unhealthy beliefs, but rather have a great many beliefs which are detrimental to their health and happiness.

What’s even worse is that because these beliefs are buried in the subconscious part of your mind, you are not even aware that you have these beliefs. Your conscious mind does not know what is going on in your subconscious mind and thus cannot rectify the situation. Like wearing the tinted pair of glasses, you cannot see what is really going on or how you are being influenced by these negative beliefs. It’s as if you are living your life by default. You are not consciously choosing the way you want to live. Your subconscious is dictating the kind of life you will have. How do you know if this is occurring? Your beliefs determine the quality of your life, so if you are not happy with the way your life is going, then you are probably being affected by some negative subconscious beliefs.

If this is going on, what can you do to improve your life and become happier and healthier? Counseling, of course, is one tried and true method. Another very effective method is with the use of hypnosis. When you are in a hypnotic state, your subconscious can locate the negative messages that are causing you so much difficulty. They can then be challenged and replaced with much healthier and more rational beliefs.

A number of years ago, I had a fellow come to me who was a golf pro. He reported to me that he was experiencing sciatic pain, and this was impinging on his ability to play golf.

After an initial evaluation, he decided he would benefit from a Rolfing treatment with me. So, we went through the ten session program, and as we did, his pain began to diminish. A few weeks later he reported to me an interesting occurrence.

He was regaining power in his swing and was hitting the ball much further than he had in years.

Needless to say he was quite happy, and as a result, he made the decision to get back into competitive golf, which for some time he had not been able to participate in.

Over the years, many, many people who play golf have come to me for help with the alleviation of their pain. There is a great variety of overuse and strain injuries that avid golfers are prone to, including golfer’s and tennis elbow, shoulder rotator cuff strain, and knee and wrist pain. Since the glutes are involved in hip rotation and the sciatic nerve runs under the glute muscle known as the piriformis, many golfers, like my golf pro client, end up with sciatica.

Many postural faults, such as one hip being higher or rounded shoulders, can not only set one up for injury but also detract from the power of your swing.

In addition, as the connective tissue/ fascial muscular wrappings become shortened, one’s flexibility and range of motion becomes increasingly challenged.

Postural patterns and lack of flexibility are both resolved through Rolf bodywork.

Love Your Mother: In Honor of Earth Day

Quieted by her forests and purified clean from her airy deserts, she touches us in places where words fall short. Small and limited, they cannot name or describe the spiritual experience of communion with Nature. At her oceans, rivers, lakes and streams we are altered. After all, we are 70% water. We literally melt and merge.

She changes our body chemistry.

Eco-therapy, as it’s now called, has been known to help alleviate depression in tandem with other methods of traditional treatment. It can boost energy levels up 20%. Forest Bathing, called, shinrin-yoku in Japanese means, “taking in the forest atmosphere”. Research shows it reduces stress. It turns out that trees release a chemical called, phytoncides that increase immunity.

Soaking up serene sounds and soothing sights has profound effects. I once saw a girl doing yoga at Cranbrook Gardens.

How Divine! The Forest Bathing Prescription recommends three hours, with one hour of walking for ultimate results, but I’ll take a good hour!

It seems pretty obvious that on some level we already know that, right?

Our minds, bodies and spirits know. A knowing that goes way back to ancient

times when we sat under full moons, gathered around a fire, giving thanks.

Her ground was home. Our hearts know also. Healing happens in Mother Nature’s arms. A long weekend at a quiet summer cottage or retreat soothes the soul, and we are right with life again. When we are going through a break-up or something really hard, little by little, she hugs and kisses away the pain. Equally in awe of her sweeping grandeur and soft gentle touch, what can we possibly do, but surrender?

When the weather is lovely and as often as I can, you’ll find me outside with a cup of my favorite coffee, journal and pen. I usually bring a deck of oracle cards. I am lucky to live close to a park.

On my walks, I usually see people eating lunch in their cars or at the tables. It makes me so happy to see picnic tables outside of corporate buildings for people to sit and eat lunch.

I can’t tell you the how much joy it brings me to sit underneath the huge and beautiful trees that have protected me and my house, all these years. I recently had to have a tree cut down in my yard. I was devastated at the thought of doing away with my dear friend and confidante. I put it off for two years. Turns out it wasn’t an ash tree, but a boxed elder, whose roots had already begun busting up cement. They were making their way towards the foundation of my house. My beloved friend would continue to grow taller, wider and rounder, and eventually do major damage. During a recent trip to Kona, where I used to live, I made arrangements to have it cut down.

In honor of Earth Day, let’s send love and healing to our Earth Mother. She gives to us in so many ways. On this coming Earth Day, Saturday, April 22nd, you might donate to a cause or group, or light candles in her honor. Take a walk and send sweet gratitude to her.

In between sunset and sundown, the night before a concert performance in Waikoloa, Hawaii, the resort turned off all its power for one hour. A subtle hush fell over the village. It was pretty amazing to experience before our show the next day.

In light of the current time and shifting environmental protections, it’s more important than ever to advocate on her behalf from our own neck of the woods.

Use your reusable shopping bags. Many places offer a bit of a discount when you do. In July of 2015, Hawaii became the first state to totally ban plastic bags. Way to go! Keep recycling. If you are a gogreen advocate, bust the move. Pick up trash when you see it. Spread the word about going organic and not eating food grown with GMOs. Do what you can.

Under the protection of a tree, or at the water’s edge, say a prayer in thanks to her. Listen for what she might need.

Listen for what she has to say about what you need. Wait for an answer. Let Mother Nature do her thing. She loves you.

Look Up!

I was amazed and delighted to learn there is a, “National Look Up at the Sky Day” on April 14th; I had to write something for it!

As a child and until I had a child of my own in my early thirties, I was the poster girl for this holiday! Someone once told me that they saw me walking down a country road, and they swore that my feet were not touching the ground!

Perhaps they were exaggerating, but it wouldn’t have been by much. Allowing the trees and the sky to lift my spirits is how I managed to rise above many intolerable situations and maintain a positive outlook and an open heart. If I was feeling down, all I had to do was look up through the high branches of the trees at the sky above and I would feel great!

This worked for me until I became pregnant, when my hormones and the addition of someone new growing inside of me grounded me onto the earth! Suddenly, I couldn’t lift

off anymore and I found myself faced with a lot of things I had been avoiding.

This was very difficult and forced me to contend with circumstances more effectively. It took me a long time to adjust to this change, but the groundedness did not end with the pregnancy, because being a mother is not something you can do with your head in the clouds! So I had years to master this new experience. Now I am pleasantly amazed when someone tells me I am very grounded! They may not realize how hard I had to work for that!

I received a beautiful and unexpected gift during the first difficult months of pregnancy while standing more fully on the earth. For the first time I could hear the spirit voices of the trees and other creatures that I had been saying hello to my whole life! My first experience of that came from a tree that I had greeted with love and appreciation when I first moved to that house. Out of the blue I saw a clear light stream from this maple, which was so huge that it would have taken three of me to reach around it, and I heard it call my name. Feeling delightfully surprised, I asked how it knew my name! It reminded me how I had greeted it those years before! Wow,

I had completely forgotten! From then on I was blessed to be able to communicate with the natural world and all its forms; which continues to bring me great joy and amazing teachings.

What an awakening for me to recognize how much I had missed by living with my head in the clouds; though at the time that focus was necessary for maintaining my peace of mind. I still visit that sky space deliberately to enjoy the pleasure of that perspective, but living there all the time was limiting and disempowering for me. Sometimes life has to give us a shove in the right direction to make us change, and becoming a mother did that for me. I have never regretted it!

I am learning to balance the earthly experience with the higher spiritual perspective, and through that am becoming more whole and strong each day. I also continue to discover new potentials within myself as life helps me to grow by bringing gifts and challenges my way. I will always be grateful for the perspective of trees and sky that kept my heart open, and carried me through times in my life when I wasn’t strong enough to live fully on the planet.

When I am walking in one of our beautiful Ann Arbor parks, I am puzzled by people who take the time to walk in nature but spend it looking down at their feet. I want to say to them, “Look up, see the beauty that surrounds you, and remember that all the little things which bother you are just a speck of dust on the amazing brilliance of nature and life.” Things can get very stressful and negative at times, but it helps if we keep the perspective that each of us is a part of the eternal. Our present life is just the blink of an eye in our unending and unfolding experience; even the soul of our planet has and will be reborn, over and over, to realize her full potential as an eternal Being.

Whatever seems unbearable now will eventually be resolved into something even more splendid than we have known in our past.

Looking up at the trees and the sky can open us to feel a part of that greater good that is always unfolding through life. Then, when our focus returns to the surface of the planet, we will have a more open, trusting and loving heart and mind. The world needs that from us!

Spring is Nature’s Way of Saying “Let’s Party!”

SPRING IS IN THE AIR! Spring has us thinking of fresh starts, vibrant colors, movement, and doing things differently from what we have been doing! Baby animals are born, little green or fuzzy buds show up on dead-looking branches, and tiny flowers pop up out of the ground. Neighbors come out of hibernation and talk to us once again as they trim hedges and cut their lawns.

The sun gets warmer and stays out more, and the world seems so colorful and people more friendly.

And look at ALL the days of celebration just in the month of April! To name a few, there’s National Walk to Work Day, National Sibling Day, Earth Day, National Stress Awareness Day, April Fool’s Day, Take Your Child to Work Day, and of course, Passover and Easter! Springtime aligns with OPPORTUNITY. All these celebrations seem to have the common thread of bettering our relationships with ourselves, our children, our siblings, and others in our lives. We have the opportunity to create special moments and memories with the people we participate with and focus on in these celebrations.

The real meaning to these celebrations comes when we personalize them and focus on someone or something differently. Taking action by celebrating a person, focusing on ourselves, or bettering the earth somehow causes a shift, a forward movement. Walking to work or finding new ways to destress changes us, maybe not in a way we can see physically yet, but mentally. Thoughts like, “Wow, I made it and I feel good” pop into our conscious or subconscious mind. When we perform a positive action, we are shifting our world, moving forward, and making changes. Spring is a time to celebrate new opportunities and fresh starts! The Master Jesus: The Coming of the Cosmic Christ

It is said that every time a butterfly flaps its delicate wings, a rose bursts forth into bloom, or a snail crawls its way across a stony path, the delicate web that connects all life is affected. Not just in the peaceful, tree-lined street in Michigan where these things are happening, but across the other side of the world – and even the Galaxy! By the same token, when a person somewhere on Earth gains some new insight, or has a flash of inspiration or performs an act of selfless service, the delicate balance of our Earth is improved in that degree. It is now known by quantum physicists and mystics alike, that we are all interconnected.

Does it really surprise us, therefore, that when a Cosmic Avatar of the stature of Jesus was born on this planet, this act of supreme sacrifice not only transformed the lives of those around Him, but transformed our world forever? No one, even in their wildest imaginings, could have dreamt of the incredible Love and majestic sacrifice of this one man and Master. He was, without doubt, way ahead of His time, and way ahead of humanity in spiritual stature.

Jesus, Godly in nature, had evolved through time into a Cosmic Avatar of Love, who understood the deeper mysteries of Creation. In deep compassion for the plight of humanity, He understood our need and stepped into this moment in our history – at the beginning of the Age of Pisces. His birth, which required this refined, elevated God-like intelligence to partake of the grossness of a backward, material world, was a tremendous sacrifice. Yet, the ultimate was His sacrifice of Himself for humanity. This enabled us to live and continue our evolution, which we

have done throughout the centuries that followed.

Jesus was a revolutionary of the highest spiritual order. For the brief time He was with us, He illumined the physical plane and mental realms of Earth, and enabled us to appreciate more deeply the miracles of God and the mysteries of life.

It is not surprising, therefore, that His birth should become one of the most popular stories ever told. Even today, this moment in time is surrounded in mystery and magic, speculation and controversy.

Why did the wise men come from the East? Was the virgin birth a myth? What really was the Star of Bethlehem? Was Jesus really born at Christmas? What does it really all mean? Like the most sublime detective novels, many have tried to solve the mystery and there are a thousand interpretations. However, in this Aquarian Age, the waters of Truth are being poured upon us and many of these mysteries revealed… It is time.

One of the most intriguing mysteries surrounding the life of Jesus was His life between the ages of 12 and 30. These eighteen years were excluded from the Gospels. After researching literally hundreds of books, stories and legends, and learning first hand from my Spiritual Master, Dr. George King, about the life of the Master Jesus, one thing is certain.

Jesus did travel to other countries.

I will be giving the lecture, “The Lost Years of Jesus: The Coming of the Cosmic Christ” (see separate ad for details), and will present research that He did indeed travel extensively. I will also present the reasons why this was so essential for His Mission.

Healing Art

It has been my joy to impart to you through my articles here in the Body Mind Spirit Guide, some of the lessons I have learned from my creative journey. I am now very happy to share with you my latest painting, “Kundalini”, along with telling you a bit more about what I do.

I am an intuitive, visual artist who specializes in transformational healing art by utilizing the art of psychometry (the ability to read subtle energies in photographs). I have been practicing and studying art and metaphysics since I was a child; inspired by my love of the arts, animation, and a desire to help transform people’s lives for the better with the ultimate goal of creating happier lives for all.

I do this by incorporating the language of light and love through brilliant digital color by streaming and channeling higher frequency energy throughout my artwork, in order to help raise people’s spirits and their connection to Source. Namaste, Love, Abby About Kundalini: This painting depicts a woman having a transcended spiritual experience, a “Kundalini Awakening” (Kundalini is Sanskrit for ‘coiled one’). It is referring to the primal energy stored at the base of the spine that rises through the chakras (‘Wheel, Energy’ nodes in the subtle bodies) to the Crown Chakra Sahasrara (‘Thousand-Petaled’) during spiritual awakening. I have chosen to capture the moment of the Sahasrara opening and starting to expand outwards; here the human body is seen as a reflection of the Universe as a Mandala.

Getting to the Land of Happy

It’s a funny thing. We are all doing it but most of us don’t even know it. When you got up this morning and said, “Oh, I am so tired, I wish I didn’t have to get up,” you were doing it. When you are at work begrudgingly performing a job you do not love and you say, “Oh well, another day, another dollar,” you are doing it. We are all creating our own experience whether we know it or not. Just because you are not aware of the force of gravity doesn’t mean you aren’t affected by it. Ignorance does not mitigate the effects of the law.

Such feelings and thoughts are passive creations we create unconsciously. Passive creators feel as if life is happening to them, that they are victims of life and circumstances. They feel stuck in their life and live for weekends, vacations and a better day. In today’s distressing social, political and economic environments, it is easy to unconsciously and emotionally react and judge the day’s events. This is a life filled with stress and anxiety. Outward events may change, but the inward feelings of fatigue, worry and disdain are ever present. Life becomes normal, predictable, discouraging and simply flat. It is the life of average.

The Distractions of the Passive Creator To improve their life, the passive creator may use alcohol or drugs to create temporary distractions from life. Addictions to opiates are at all-time highs and continue to climb. Twenty million Americans have a substance abuse disorder and thirty percent of Americans suffer from an alcohol use disorder. And if these don’t work, depression is a frequent way out. Fifteen million Americans are diagnosed with depression (growing 20% per year) but many more express symptoms that go undiagnosed. Other people buy things in the attempt to fill the void within. There is no end to the buying and no end to the emptiness. And then there are those who are simply addicted to the emotional drama of work, family, politics, and/or religion.

Every day the same play is acted out. Where did my life go?

Is this all there is? Is there nothing I can do? I tell you it does not have to be this way.

Entering the Land of Happy You can become a deliberate creator and enter the land of happy. The land of happy is a place where you no longer react to life but consciously create the life you desire. Moving through life is no longer filled with effort and worry but is replaced with ease and faith. Because you begin creating from a place of knowing and joy, more joy comes to you and your creations get better and better. Your heart is filled with gratitude for all life experiences, even those that others may judge as not so good. Many experiences may appear distasteful but I have come to know that in hindsight they are often great blessings.

Comfort, calm and peace envelop you as you realize all is unfolding as it should. You give praise and thanksgiving for the great mystery that is operating in your life and your relationship to it.

The Two Sides of Desire Deliberate creation begins with realizing there are two completely different energies behind desire. On the one side is that which you don’t wont. “I am tired of being tired.” While almost everyone starts here, this is not where we want to stay.

Deliberate creators come from the other end of the spectrum of desire. They create from the place of what they do want. “I have all the energy I need.” Many are inspired by this simple shift in consciousness but many are perplexed when it doesn’t seem to work.

Meditation and Breathwork Close the Gap This primarily has to do with the mismatch between what they think and what they feel. Thought directs energy but feeling is the energy. If you affirm well-being but don’t believe it and feel lack, then lack is what you have. If you attach to the outcome and feel frustrated at not succeeding, that just reinforces the feeling of lack. At that point it is better to relax and come back to neutral. This has the effect of closing the gap between what you want and don’t want. Meditation and breathwork are excellent ways to do this. However, there is more.

Standing in the way of what we want are limiting beliefs we have about ourselves. These beliefs need to be examined and unwound for us to be deliberate creators.

If we have a hidden belief “money doesn’t grow on trees and is not easy to come by,” no amount of feeling that you have more money is going to overcome the belief. Therefore, the most effective creator practices inner discernment and utilizes tools and techniques that disintegrate limiting thoughts.

Nitric Oxide Your Friend for Life

By Dr. William H. Karl, D.C. The history of nitric oxide is fascinating. Nitric oxide (NO) was used in making explosives before anything was known about its beneficial role in the body.

In fact, it was discovered by accident.

In 1878, a physician by the name of Dr. William Murrell became famous after treating patients who had angina (chest pain/tightness) with nitroglycerin. Nitric oxide dilates (opens) narrowed arteries, improving circulation and delivering oxygen to the heart.

In 1992, nitric oxide was named “Molecule of the Year” by Science journal. In 1998, US scientists received the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine for discovering and explaining the nitric oxide pathways in the body.

I decided to write about nitric oxide and sponsor a workshop after learning so many amazing things about it during my Brimhall Wellness Certification seminar.

Nitric oxide is a key signaling molecule that’s involved in many physiological and pathological processes - playing a critical role in blood pressure, overall circulation, and energy output. It keeps arteries open and promotes vascular health by regulating the muscle tone of blood vessels which assists in controlling blood pressure and stopping platelet cells from grouping in clots to help prevent blockages in blood vessels.

Nitric oxide has been shown to be a mediator in inflammation and rheumatism, and helps the immune system fight viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections, as well as tumors.

In the brain, nitric oxide helps transmit messages between nerve cells, helps protect against dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases, and has

been associated with learning, memory, sleep, and depression. In sports and other physical activities, nitric oxide helps improve performance and duration in the muscles without needing increased oxygen. This is one of the reasons nitroglycerin is so effective in vascular and cardiac applications.

Because of its effects on circulation and blood flow, nitric oxide (and L-arginine) is associated with erectile dysfunction (ED).

Increasing nitric oxide naturally makes so much more sense than taking a drug that’s designed to force reactions in the body. Healthy habits that increase nitric oxide in both sexes is always beneficial when it comes to intimacy.

There are two basic cellular pathways that generate nitric oxide in the body.

The first is the L-arginine/nitric oxide synthase pathway which starts with the amino acid L-arginine, and relies on a group of enzymes known as nitric oxide synthases (NOS), along with cofactors oxygen and NADPH. L-arginine occurs in meat, seafood, eggs, nuts, seeds, dairy, and some plants. Arugula, spinach, and beetroot are the main plants containing L-arginine. Nitric oxide may also be synthesized from L-citrulline and L-ornithine. Watermelon and its rind is a source of L-citrulline. L-arginine and L-citrulline can be obtained from foods, but NADPH depends on ingested niacin (a B vitamin).

The second pathway is the nitratenitrite-nitric oxide pathway. When dietary sources of nitrates and nitrites enter the gastrointestinal tract, they’re converted into nitric oxide through the action of bacteria in the mouth and the intestinal tract. In this pathway, nitrates (NO3) in the foods are converted into nitrite (NO2) and then into nitric oxide (NO). This is why it’s important to chew food well. To avoid shutting down this pathway, you

must avoid mouthwash that kills oral bacteria. Once foods are converted into nitrites, the conversion into nitric oxide occurs in various parts of the body. In muscle tissue, including heart muscle, a protein called myoglobin converts nitrite into nitric oxide. In the blood, hemoglobin converts nitrite into nitric oxide, and endothelial cells in the veins convert nitrite into nitric oxide.

It’s now known that this nitrate-nitritenitric oxide pathway kicks in when oxygen levels are low, such as when exercising – giving us yet another reason to exercise more heavily!

Unhealthy lifestyle factors lead to damaged endothelial cells in the blood vessel walls where nitric oxide is created.

Environmental toxins, smoking, high sugar levels, excessive exercise, and drugs are some of the factors that cause damage. The underlying cause of heart disease (atherosclerosis) is characterized by endothelial dysfunction.

Since nitric oxide is produced in the endothelial cells in the blood vessel walls, it’s a vicious cycle. Endothelial cells aren’t being repaired because nitric oxide production is impaired due to cells that have already been damaged. This is why it’s important to help the body produce more nitric oxide and eliminate damaging habits such as smoking.

The 2010 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study showed that poor circulation and high blood pressure were the biggest risk factors for death (9.4 million deaths), followed by tobacco smoking (6.3 million deaths), alcohol (5 million deaths), and then factors related to physical inactivity and diet, particularly those with high levels of sodium and low levels of fruit/ vegetable consumption (12.5 million deaths). This study pointed out that while people were living longer, they weren’t enjoying more years of health.

Another study (Food Science and Nutrition, 2014) showed that an extremely high antioxidant/phytonutrient blend of specific foods can increase

nitric oxide levels. When I learned about the blend of fruit and vegetable based powder used in this study, realized its benefits, and then found that it even tasted great, I knew I needed it in my office for myself and my patients. The Silver Thread The Bardo

Bardo is a Tibetan word for “intermediate state”. It refers to transitions in our lives. In Sanskrit the name is, antarabhva.

The term arose after the Buddha’s death, referring to the time between two lives. During that time, when consciousness is separated from the physical body, there is the capability for transcendental insight, which plants positive roots into the next incarnation. It can also be a place where karmic seeds of negativity can sprout, setting a pattern which creates a negative lifetime.

Whether you follow Buddhist metaphysics or not, the bardo principle is useful in understanding our lives.

The principle describes a process of stable states followed by transitions of instability, followed by periods of stability. Although change is constant, according to Buddhist psychology, there is no doubt that from a subjective perspective certain periods of life are experienced as stable, are experienced as pleasant, while transitions are fraught with the anxiety of uncertainly.

There are three areas where this principle is most germane: 1) If we look at the life span of people, developmental psychologists often view life as a series of stages. Perhaps the most famous is that of Eric Erikson, a Neo-Freudian who defined “The 8 stages of man.” He believed our lives were divided into 8 stages of development. At each stage there is a conflict between forces, and the way that conflict was resolved determines the quality of the next stage of life.

I work with a lot of young adults. The ages between about 1723 years is called by some, “The young adult transition”. During that stage, young people move from dependency on their parents to independence. Such independence is necessary to master the tasks of that age, which are a vocational identity,

and patterns of intimate relationships. Failure leads to an inability to work effectively and interpersonal isolation.

2) Within such stages are more mundane but often challenging decisions to be made. This might range from buying a new dress, to deciding which job position to take, to which person to date or marry. Sometimes the choice is obvious and firm; such as “approach-avoidance” conflicts where one choice is desirable, the other uninviting. However, often such choices are conflicts such as “approach-approach’ where we desire both things but can only have one, or “avoidant-avoidant, where two choices are undesirable but we must take one.

3) For those of you that are mindful, you can observe on a second to second basis fluctuations in your mood states from calm, to agitated, to sad, angry, and on and on. Sometimes these changes are responsive to external events, but often they seem to appear for reasons unknown. Modern neuroscience has confirmed that thoughts and feelings “jump” from thing to thing, and that is the natural way the mind works. In yoga they call that “monkey mind”. It is also the nature of the mind to dwell on thoughts and feelings that are characterized by strong emotions.

The bardo states are generally characterized by an existential anxiety. It is inherent in the natural mind to be fearful in the face of uncertainty. The groundwork for such anxiety is the belief that what we are experiencing is permanent. Concomitantly change is feared as a loss, a death, which is perpetual, which lasts forever. This attitude constitutes a narrowing of the mind, where we are locked into black and white choices. Narrowing gives way to fear, despair and obsession.

If we recognize that change, impermanence, is the nature of life, then we also understand that life flows from bad to good to neutral and all shades in between. If we open to experience, we flow with changes and can find it exciting, invigorating and filled with potential. If we place our highest value on learning from all situations, then the categories of “good” and “bad” become secondary to the enlightenment that flows from new experiences.

The bardo states can be a fountain of growth if we train ourselves to view them with calmness and equanimity. We train our body-mind not to panic, but instead to view them through their underlying potential for growth and learning. And most importantly, nothing is permanent; painful times naturally pass, if we embrace change, not fight it.

Universal Awakening

By Susan deCaussin There’s a true awakening that’s taking place in the world today, and it’s an amazing thing to witness.

Almost every day, I’m meeting people who are seeking answers as they journey toward their own personal enlightenment. Some have been seeing and sensing things beyond the physical realm for quite some time, and are wanting to understand the meaning behind those experiences. Others may have had general “knowings” about certain situations that they just couldn’t seem to explain. And, still others may have nothing more than a nagging drive to understand life, and the meaning of life, at a deeper level. These are all different rungs on the ladder of self-discovery and awakening.

Some may find these happenings to be nothing more than curious and thought-provoking, while others may be scared and confused – unsure of how to make sense of these new experiences, which may be leading them down new and intriguing paths. The Universe is attempting to heal this planet, and all who call it home, by awakening us to our Divine connection to each other and our creator. In this process, we begin to identify more deeply with our higher selves and let go of the earthly possessions that many use to define their existence.

It excites me to know that so many people are being moved toward a greater understanding of their connection to Universal energy and desiring to open themselves to Spiritual guidance.

Change, however, can be uncomfortable and a bit frightening.

This shift forces us to think outside of the box and accept a new definition of reality. However, the decision to go down this path of knowledge will provide great clarity and direction, that wouldn’t otherwise be found.

When you hear something for the first time, and immediately connect with it as being familiar and comforting, it drives you forward in an attempt to learn more. Personally, my life continues to take on new meaning and purpose every day, with each book I read, class I attend, and experience I have. I continue to be blessed with a deeper understanding of life that resonates as Truth within my soul. As I fill with gratitude for these amazing revelations, I find myself aligning my thoughts and actions with these Truths, more and more with each passing day.

The great thing is that, when you start to see and understand the bigger picture of why we’re here and what life is all about, you begin to let go of the stressors associated with living a life in the physical; you slowly stop identifying with possessions and things that exist on this Earth plane; and, everything seems to

Like a hand animates a glove, our spirit animates our physical body. The Habit of Gratitude and Connectedness

talked about, and I wonder how many of us will follow through, or if we will get distracted by our busy lives and are done connecting and being of service until next year.

We take so many things for granted. I am reminded of this as this week, we had a huge blast of winds from Mother Nature.

And we, as well as others, found ourselves electricity free. The first couple nights were awesome. The quiet, the camaraderie, the sounds of nature rather than the electronic gadgets we have. The soft candle light and takeout dinner. Gratitude that we have each other, and homes, plenty of food.

Gratitude that we have a soft place, though cold at this point, to place our heads, and a roof over our heads. Most of all, the conversations. The silence had its own beauty. People I met were even making a choice to “cut the cord” to their TVs and other electronic devices as they felt so much more peaceful. Yet, within a few days, nerves were tense, conversations shorter and drives to places which still had power and wifi became more important.

That same weekend, my husband and I had the opportunity to attend a benefit for MS. Just as nerves were fraying, again, I was struck by how much I could be grateful for. Here was another sense of camaraderie. Yet this time it was connected with the desire to help others, and gratitude that we have the chance to be of service; just because we are

blessed with their presence, and our lives are enriched by them. And plans were made to go on runs and biking for MS. How often do we take the time to pause and value what’s right in front of us? The peace of quiet, of nature. The connections with those we love. The sense of purpose of helping heal the world, or at least our corner of it. How often do we turn-off our busy lives to lean back and value the life we have?

The love we have. And the peace. The peace that we are safe and secure and lead a blessed life. How often do we listen, to actually turn-off our busy world with its distractions to go within and become centered and connect with nature, the Divine and our Creator?

I find it interesting and hopeful that in my experience when the chips are down, that is when we, and I mean humanity, are at our finest. We connect with our most Divine selves and are aware of our interconnections, our inner connections; we even open our homes and hearts to strangers.

Yet, this connection and inner peace often seems to come, and go. The first powerless days, we gathered and had conversation at the library while charging our phone, and taking turns. By day three, there was less talking and more use of the electronics. People started rushing while driving again, and were more resigned and withdrawn than having an open heart. And, our youth especially, were gathering in places that had wifi access, enticed by their fantasy worlds. And, after the snowfall, that snow was the new complaint. Even at the benefit, when it was done, plans were

How difficult it seems to mindfully, and for long periods of time, connect with our connectedness, our senses of gratitude, our sense of the Divine in each of us, our world. We seem to be wired for negativity, mistrust and avoidance.

Negativity seems to be our default position.

Like any habit we want to change, it requires mindfulness, effort, vigilance and persistence. What about you, are you ready to change? Will you choose to put forth the effort and mindfulness, the vigilance and persistence it takes to find and maintain that connectedness, the gratitude that leads to joy, peace and the Divine? You can start by just reconnecting with your true self every morning and night, then connect mindfully every hour. Practice until being your true self, feeling the love, the gratitude and connectedness becomes your new habit. A habit you have chosen to practice and feed.

So, are you ready for a life of gratitude, peace and joy? A life of love and connectedness, of knowing your true, Divine self? Then go ahead! Practice until it becomes your new habit, your new way of living!

So What Does EASTER Really Mean to You?

Since that fateful day when Jesus died on the cross, people have interpreted this sacrifice in many different ways.

Religions have defined his death as a way to allow sinners to be forgiven by God. The only thing you need to do is to ask for forgiveness and you will then be saved, and when you die you get the free pass into heaven. Can this be true?

Is this the only thing that Jesus tried to impart upon us?

Throughout the ages, we have added fun traditions to celebrate this momentous day in history. We now have Easter bunnies, who bring beautifully decorated eggs representing rebirth and renewal. Now we can even visit an Easter bunny at your favorite mall and get your picture with the bunny.

Maybe we started these fun distractions for the kids so that they are not exposed to the difficult truth behind Jesus’ crucifixion -- as the details could surely upset them. I believe everyone has the right to disagree with this historical event or even have whatever interpretation as to why this event happened. However, Jesus’ physical death continues to have a strong impact on human societies -both religious and secular.

Now I am not suggesting that we give up on the fun characters we have created that put a smile on the faces of our children. I love the celebration of Christmas with Santa Claus and everyone spreading the Christmas spirit in celebration of baby Jesus coming into this world. Hopefully as people gain good feelings during the Christmas season they’ll spread good cheer and do good works.

I would like to bring a more insightful look at Easter from a spiritual perspective.

If you believe that Jesus was the son of God and was innocent to earthly corruptions and was not born into sin because he was a high soul, then I speak to you to please open your heart and mind.

God did not just send his only begotten son to the Earth to die for our sins, but to instead teach us some very important facts about who we really are and that we are also the sons and daughters of God. One perspective of this event from my view point is that Jesus came here to show us that we are also God’s children. That we have the power to heal ourselves and others and to co-create miracles in the name of God through believing in the divine power within us -- as Jesus tried to teach us. If you are from traditional beliefs of how mankind was given a soul and made in the image of God, you also know that corruption and disobedience put up a barrier between us and God. We became fearful and felt unworthy of God’s love and soon forgot who we really are or even how to make our way back.

Further, we moved into fearful and self-righteous thinking. The more we separated from knowing who we are, the more sinful we became. Religious beliefs alone are not the way back.

We need to find our way back with our personal connection with God and to remember who we are to regain our inner power. When Jesus walked the Earth, he wanted us to know that we had the power within us to reach out to the universe and ask for wisdom, forgiveness, healing and love. Because we live in shame and fear, even Jesus could not seem to keep people from quickly forgetting all that he said or did to show us the way. Many people

continued to live selfishly in negative thoughts and deeds.

Part of the reason Jesus had disciples was to share with them his teaching to heal and connect to God. He knew someday they would need to take over teaching people the way back to positive loving thoughts and deeds, and bring down the barrier between them and God. Once the barrier comes down and you are accepting of an open relationship with the universal mind of God, then you will no longer live in a fearful and negative space.

In part, Jesus taught us how to restore our connection to the universal mind of God. Through the teaching of Jesus, we learned how to come out of the darkness and into the light of God. Forgiveness of sin was not just about negative thoughts and deeds, but also that we separated from God. This short article does not afford me the space to bring about the whole story of who we really are and how we got so lost, but on this holiday month of celebrating Easter, I wanted to give you some insights so you can be more open to your connection to the universal mind.

This will open you to a better relationship with your faith as you embrace God’s gift of giving us a chance to learn and evolve our souls. When we open up our heart’s and trust in a connection with him, through Jesus’ teachings, we are able to be forgiven and will find our way back to God. Okay, enough of the heavy talk about Easter; put your bunny ears back on, pop a jelly bean into your mouth, and start making egg salad sandwiches out of all those eggs the bunny brought you.

Romancing The Beloved

Sit at the throne of your own divinity daily. You lead in your living example. You live by your self perception.

How you see yourself is how you will see the world. Your True Self is beautiful, whole, and innately loved. There is nothing you can do to win or lose your True Self. It is who you are.

How would you live knowing you are loved without question? How would you act feeling Creation’s sweet kiss in your heart? What would you dream...if you knew that you were innately loved?

You can only give what you have received. Remembering how deeply you are loved is a courageous un-identification with the past, life patterns, family constellations and societal labels. When you realize your self-perception or state of Being influences your external world, your presence...YOU...reveals itself as more than enough.

Don’t join others in their pain or chaos. Hurting with another does not help them.

Getting angry when someone is angry, does not help them. Joy and understanding is the medicine a person needs, not commiseration.

Empathy can be a powerful tool to help understand a person’s point of view and heal separation. Empathy can also cause you to be be a jumping bean of reaction and add to others pain.

Witnessing your own humanness with non-reaction and compassion allows you to be the eye of the storm and the uplifting presence people truly need. A calm assertive wind blowing from your heart, invites others into remembering their True Self.

Complaining, moaning, and blaming doesn’t change things. If it did, then the world would change today. Mentally attacking yourself. or another, doesn’t create change either. These may be simple concepts but they are foundational to a happy life.

Worrying about a loved one does not help them. In fact your worry actually adds to their discomfort. Hold a vision and see them as God sees them. Trust everything will work out, humbly accept there is a divine plan for them, and that you don’t always know why they do the things they do.

Be a tuning fork of peace through your self love and willingness to love others. You are both human and a Soul. Accept the human personality, changing emotions and aging body. As you love and accept yourself, you will realize your Soul. Your Soul or True Self is eternal, wise, and a dispenser of miracles. As you realize more and more of your True Self, you will no longer feel the need to control, fix or defend. What you try to control, controls you. What you defend against, you pull inside of you.

Choose to forgive and accept ‘them’ so that you can stay grounded in Who You Truly Are. What you focus on in others, you cultivate within yourself. Focus on the good in people and choose to see who they are trying to be. Don’t believe the fear. Don’t believe the person’s identity confusion.... they have forgotten their True Self. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) — Don’t jump on job changes while Mercury retrogrades this month. Instead, spend time evaluating important career goals, and even spiritual goals. Meditate daily to tap into dormant talents and passions that can motivate you and inspire others.

See if this shifts your work life. If not, May is better to select new options.

Also, healing issues in your love life, or even with children, can make job stress less. It’s easier to displace anger toward the office rather than face deeper pain at home or in your heart. Again, inner reflection reveals the roots of whatever unsettles you and shows the path to peace of mind.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) — Mercury retrograde illuminates solutions about money or debt. Meditate, since mental relaxation allows ideas to flow in and lets for “magical” things to happen! Prosperity is also linked with trust and intimacy, so reflect on healing old wounds to open to the love available in the present moment.

If single, that opening makes room for new people who have high standards and ethics. If struggling with family, just let it lie, things resolve easily in early May. Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) — Seeing both sides of a choice is insightful, but you create stress (mentally and physically) when you dwell on “what ifs”. Grab your personal power back by refusing to be wishy-washy. Once you make a decision, stick with it and cut yourself off from other options.

The Universe will support your dreams whichever direction you commit to, but you must make that commitment!

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) — More than any sign, Scorpio must continually forgive! You can bury resentments so deep that you forget they’re there. This creates chronic unhappiness, prosperity blocks and relationship issues. Meditate perhaps with the Buddhist prayer of, “May I be peaceful” . . . followed with, “May all beings be peaceful” (google “Metta prayer”). Blessing others blesses you! You’ll still have healthy limits without being overprotective of your heart. In closest partnerships, remember the saying, “How important is it?” and allow imperfections in those bonds.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) — You’re infectiously positive and can avoid negative emotions. However, repressing or ignoring tough stuff is problematic. As Saturn retrogrades in your sign, see life as a roller coaster. Take a Zen approach to the “downs”, and move toward them without resistance. Allow the experience to be fully processed and completed. If you “apply the brakes” as you go down, there isn’t momentum to go back up and you can get stuck. Meditating to embracing the “bad” without denial or bracing allows integration, wisdom, and a quicker flow back into joy and ease!

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) — Old resentments and fears are made worse by your imagination. Repeatedly replaying conflicts creates a negative belief system. As Saturn and Mercury retrograde, meditate on how you’ve altered experiences by overlaying powerful emotions onto them. Release these “issues” by observing them as simple facts, as if watching a movie.

Painful emotions float away and you can forgive the persons or circumstances more easily. You’ll have a rush of personal empowerment, confidence and spiritual safety. You’ll feel to your core that you’re a valuable part of the world around you, not separate from it!

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18) — It’s no small task to observe inner dialog, but careful attention breaks negative thought habits that deplete energy, creativity

and self-esteem. Meditation reveals subconscious thinking that have roots in childhood, or even a family lineage of trauma and shame. Remember that “nerves that no longer fire together no longer wire together”, so you can uncreate your old personality and re-create a new one by meditating on a positive future vision surrounded by feelings of gratitude and joy. Feelings are the glue that hold the new you in place!

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) — Meditate to resurrect dreams and goals you’ve given up on. Mercury is retrograde, breathing life into “dead” hopes. Declare you’re no longer the old you who “failed”. Each day, visualize your new reality, along with feeling the joy as if it already happened. Your intuition gives action steps, and it’s up to you to carry them through. Small increments now add up to a flowing cascade of success in months ahead. Continue to internally see and feel your new life each day and take outer actions to make it real. This is quantum physics on a personal level and it works!

Laughter and a Fun Little Story

was not a Buddhist custom. As soon as the fire was lit, fireworks began to rocket through the air! Pu-Tai had hidden firecrackers in his robe, creating laughter to uplift the heavy hearts of the sorrowful crowd who had lost their beloved teacher.

By Kathy Bindu Henning It was Saturday morning, the day after St. Patrick’s Day. I was sitting with my husband at the kitchen table; we were informally chatting, having fun. All of a sudden he sprang into high gear and said, “What’s that big thing out on the front porch?”

The thought that a friend, or perhaps one of my meditation students, was inspired to drive to our home in the dark of night and anonymously place PuTai beside our front door is a heavenly experience to bask in—warm like the Caribbean sunshine.

“What big thing?” I asked.

“That big thing” he repeated, “it’s on the porch.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I said. “Do you mean the chair? Or the big red flower pot?”

“No—not the chair or the flower pot,” he replied.

As I restated that I had no idea what ‘big thing’ he was referring to, I watched him exit through the living room heading straight for the front door; he opened it, then momentarily disappeared outside to the porch.

He re-entered the house, and to my amazement, was carrying a large statue of a laughing Buddha, brightly clad in vibrant red and gilded gold regalia. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing—it was like the best birthday ever only it wasn’t my birthday.

I came alive in my chair, “Who is it from?” I asked, eyes widening.

“I have no idea!” he replied with youthful, boyhood enthusiasm, as if he was just bestowed a new bike and it was the coolest bike on the block. “There’s no card or note anywhere.”

We cleared a spot and carefully placed the jolly fellow on the white cotton tablecloth; his joyful exuberance filled the room. His radiant, carefree demeanor was contagious, and for a while my husband and I disappeared from the familiar realm we’d awakened to just a few hours prior, and now found ourselves suspended in a thought-free state, lost in

the blissful world of our new roommate.

It felt like we’d won the lottery. “He looks like a Buddha of abundance!” I proclaimed, admiring the gold coins overflowing from his large, glossy satchel. We examined him like a fine piece of china—front to back, bottom to top, side to side. I felt blessed.

We later discovered that our new friend was a monk who’d lived over one-thousand years ago. He was kind, generous, eccentric and saintly. His name was Pu-Tai, meaning ‘Cloth Sack’, referring to the bag he carried with him. In Chinese folklore, he represents prosperity, wisdom and contentment.

This charismatic monk traveled from town to town, spreading happiness and joy to all the people. He loved children, and was known for giving them sweets and small toys that he removed from his sack. When he finished, he’d set his bag down, look up at the sky, and begin laughing whole-heartedly. Within moments, everyone was laughing! With that, he moved on to the next village.

Pu-Tai even used his death as an opportunity to teach that the power of laughter helps make our problems smaller and easier to manage. In his final days, he asked a close friend to burn his body immediately after his passing, which was surprising as this

Over the years, I’ve come to cherish the importance of laughter in my life, which has been both transforming and profound. And believe me, it has taken a lot of work to get there. Laughter keeps my perception clear. It helps keep me buoyant, light-hearted, and better able to ‘go with the flow’. And, it helps keep my mind happy and at peace.

It is perfect then, that Pu-Tai arrived at our home just in time to celebrate April, “National Humor Month.” It’s a reminder to make laughter a daily practice—to let go of the small stuff; to walk with a spring in our step; and just like Pu-Tai, to look up at the sky and laugh. After all, there’s always something to laugh about—the smudged mascara, the unruly hair sticking up, the sock that got lost in the dryer...
