Do You Need an Attitude Adjustment? By Phillip Rosenbaum

Have you ever heard the expression, “Attitude is Everything”? Many great motivational speakers including Wayne Dyer, Les Brown, and Earl Nightingale have expressed that having a positive attitude is crucial if one is to be happy and successful. The great neurologist, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, Viktor E. Frankl stated, “Everything can be taken from a person but one thing, the last of human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Often, things happen to people that appear to be negative or bad, but people always have a choice in how they interpret what has happened and how they deal with it. Viktor Frankl, who wrote the book, Man’s Search for Meaning, remarked that during the Holocaust people were only given one cup of dirty water and a little piece of bread for the day. Some people would try to steal other people’s food, while other people would share what they had. Even in such dire circumstances, people had a choice in how they acted. Do you believe that outside events dictate the quality of your life? Years ago, I spoke with a man who trained people to become truck drivers. He always told the new driver that they would often face rude and reckless drivers who might endanger their lives. He let them know, however, that it was always up to them whether to let the incident upset them and possibly ruin their day or whether to let it go and remain calm and in control. They always had a choice. Do you focus on opportunities or do you focus on problems and obstacles? Imagine how different your life would be if you always believed something positive would occur rather than always expecting the worst. Many authors speak about how many times their books were rejected before they finally found someone to publish them. If they had a negative attitude they

would have given up after just a few rejections. By having a positive attitude they were able to handle all the rejections and keep going until they were successful. Or, consider a salesman or phone canvasser. He or she can expect that out of 100 phone calls, only about four to seven people would express interest; that means that over 90% of the time the canvasser would get a rejection. After several rejections, one could easily give up. On the other hand, one could adopt the attitude that with just a few more phone calls somebody would be interested. All people have or will face adversity at times in their lives. It is their attitude that will determine how they handle it. If you have a positive attitude with thoughts such as “I can, I will, I expect the best,” you will fare much better than if you have a negative attitude with thoughts such as, “I can’t, I don’t think so, it’s impossible,” occupying your mind. You may wonder why some people have a positive attitude while others do not. Often this comes from early messages they received when growing up. If you received primarily negative messages, this could easily result in a negative attitude. However, these messages are basically just thoughts, and thoughts can be changed. Hypnosis is an excellent way to determine the origin of these negative messages, eliminate them, and replace them with much healthier ones. Meditation with the Aid of Yogic Transmission By Chuck Shermetaro

Transmission is the unique feature of Heartfulness meditation. As the body needs nutrition and the mind needs education, the soul needs a type of energy for this awakening and flourishing. Just as the body becomes energized when it is nourished, the soul too gets energized upon receiving this transmission. The best way to understand transmission is to experience it practically. Like a scientist who sets up an experiment and makes observations and draws conclusions, we invite you to observe the effects of transmission during the Heartfulness meditation and see for yourself. Many practitioners feel the effects of transmission in their first few sessions and are surprised by their ability to plunge into refreshing, absorbing meditation. Heartfulness is a simple and subtle practice of meditation that connects each of us with the light and love in our hearts. Heartfulness meditation directs our attention from our mind to our heart – from thinking to feeling. We feel relief from stress and anxiety as we begin to experience life through our heart’s serenity. As we delve deeper, we develop the intuition and clarity to make more effective decisions in life; inner clarity and poise increase our capacity for empathy, joy, and love. One slice of bread equals five teaspoons of sugar; and when flour is bleached, the vitamin E becomes a chemical called, Alloxan, which destroys beta cells in the pancreas, creating type 1 diabetes. Insulin is produced by the beta cells of the pancreas to help produce and store energy. As sugar rises in the bloodstream, insulin rises with it to keep blood sugar from going too high. Insulin was designed to work with natural foods that release energy at regular and predictable rates. Refined sugar causes us to crash due to the way it spikes insulin. When sugar consumption is higher than the amount of insulin produced in the body can handle, a diagnosis of type 2 or type 3 diabetes is not far off. Type 1 diabetes results from a damaged pancreas which typically happens early in life but could happen anytime resulting in no insulin production. Type 1 requires artificially introduced insulin. Type 2 may also need supplemental insulin because the pancreas has a lower insulin output than required to function properly. Type 3 occurs when excess sugar levels affect the brain starving the cells for energy such as in Parkinson’s, dementia/ Alzheimer’s disease, and ALS. Normal blood sugar numbers vary depending on the source. According to Medicine.net, normal fasting range is 7299mg/dl - up to 140mg/ dl about 2 hours after eating. A well-controlled diabetic patient will be under 100mg/dl fasting and up to 180mg/dl 2 hours after eating. When blood sugar goes too low, the most dangerous symptoms include fainting, seizure or coma. Other symptoms include unusual hunger, sweating, shaking, anxiety, blurred vision, headache, light-headedness, pale skin, sleepiness, difficulty concentrating and increased heart rate. Very high blood sugar may be exhibited by excessive thirst and hunger, frequent urination, irritability, blurry vision, fatigue, weakness, weight loss (usually type 1), slow healing, and most importantly,

blood vessels that constrict quickly causing vascular diseases. Symptoms are best sorted out by your healthcare provider, NOT Google. Many things have similar symptoms. Trying to fix something as important as diabetes without professional help would be like trying to fix a nuclear reactor by watching a U-tube.

Dr. Joel Fuhrman, the author of The End of Diabetes, says that even type 2 diabetes can be reversed. With type 2 and 3 diabetes, lifestyle changes typically involve daily physical exercise, high-quality sleep, healthy foods (supplemented with essential vitamins and minerals as indicated by the body) and stress management.

A variety of tests are used to determine blood sugar, some better than others. There are “moment in time” tests which include the glucose meter self-test and the series of fasting tests followed by blood draws. The latest and generally most accurate test is the A1C test. A moment in time tests can’t tell you if sugar is going up or down; it’s like a picture of a ball in the air. It only tells where it’s at dr karalthat moment. This is important if you’re taking insulin and need to calculate how much you need. It’s not diagnostic. A1C tells us the average over 120 days. This test is most important to non-diagnosed diabetics and pre-diabetics so they can change their evil ways before it’s too late!

Fluctuations in blood sugar that eventually start damaging the body often begin with excessive consumption of refined sugars, high fructose corn syrup and grains and/or fruits that are high in fructose and/or are high glycemic also high estrogen levels. This doesn’t mean we can’t eat fruit. Berries and tropical fruits are healthy and low glycemic.

Without diabetes, a normal A1C range is 4 to 5.8 and 5.7 to 6.4 indicates pre-diabetes. 6.5 or higher indicates diabetes. The recommended level for people with diabetes is below 7 percent. Love is a divine state of being. It is the natural and right state of the human soul. Love is so much more than something you do; it is what you must be. Love is created when the masculine and feminine energies that make up the immortal soul exist in perfect harmony. You have the freedom to choose your fulfillment. When there is love there is supreme confidence. The harmony of your soul puts you in perfect balance with the universal flow. Things come to you much more quickly with less effort. You really know what you want, what is good for your life, without question. In any given moment the exact goal of your life is perfectly clear, the required course of action is known; without hesitation, the precise amount of force is exercised, and the exact desired result is created. When there is love there must be physical health because the soul is in balance. You cannot be subject to disease if the masculine and feminine energies exist in harmony. Giving Thanks Can Make You Happier The word gratitude is derived from the Latin word gratia, which means grace, graciousness, or gratefulness (depending on the context). In some ways gratitude encompasses all of these meanings. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In the process, people usually recognize that the source of that goodness lies at least partially outside themselves. As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals — whether to other people, nature, or a higher power. In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships. Research on gratitude Two psychologists, Dr. Robert A. Emmons of the University of California, Davis, and Dr. Michael E. McCullough of the University of Miami, have done much of the research on gratitude. In one study, they asked all participants to write a few sentences each week, focusing on particular topics. One group wrote about things they were grateful for that had occurred during the week. A second group wrote about daily irritations or things that had displeased them, and the third wrote about events that had affected them (with no emphasis on them being positive or negative). After 10 weeks, those who wrote about gratitude were more optimistic and felt better about their lives. Surprisingly, they also exercised more and had fewer visits to physicians than those who focused on sources of aggravation. People feel and express gratitude in multiple ways. They can apply it to the past (retrieving positive memories and being thankful for elements of childhood or past blessings), the present (not taking good fortune for granted as it comes), and the future (maintaining a hopeful and optimistic attitude). Regardless of the inherent or current level of someone’s

Ways to cultivate gratitude Gratitude is a way for people to appreciate what they have instead of always reaching for something new in the hopes it will make them happier, or thinking they can’t feel satisfied until every physical and material need is met. Gratitude helps people refocus on what they have instead of what they lack. And, although it may feel contrived at first, this mental state grows stronger with use and practice. Here are some ways to cultivate gratitude on a regular basis: Write a thank-you note. You can make yourself happier and nurture your relationship with another person by writing a thank-you letter expressing your enjoyment and appreciation of that person’s impact on your life. Send it, or better yet, deliver and read it in person if possible. Make a habit of sending at least one gratitude letter a month. Once in a while, write one to yourself. Thank someone mentally. No time to write? It may help just to think about someone who has done something nice for you, and mentally thank the individual. Keep a gratitude journal. Make it a habit to write down or share with a loved one thoughts about the gifts you’ve received each day. Count your blessings. Pick a time every week to sit down and write about your blessings — reflecting on what went right or what you are grateful for. Sometimes it helps to pick a number — such as three to five things — that you will identify each week. As you write, be specific and think about the sensations you felt when something good happened to you. Pray. People who are religious can use prayer to cultivate gratitude. Meditate. Mindfulness meditation involves focusing on the present moment without judgment. Although people often focus on a word or phrase (such as “peace”), it is also possible to focus on what you’re grateful for (the warmth of the sun, a pleasant sound, etc.). The Power of a Vision By Joseph A. Drolshagen The vast majority of people cannot answer the question, “What is your vision for your life?” They cannot tell me what they would love to be, do, have, and experience within their lifetime. CAN YOU? “Our life always expresses the results of our dominant thoughts.” - Soren KierKegaard A vision brings about clarity, meaning, and purpose. Having a vision sets the course for our life, and the more clarity one has on their vision, the more power they have in bringing life to their dreams and visions. Without a vision, life can seem like an untethered buoy at sea during a hurricane. Bobbing and getting thrown about without any clear destination in mind. A vision will assist in retaining one’s power and purpose even when storms arise in life — one experiences living at a vibration above their circumstances and situations. I do a lot of speaking and talking about the power of having a vision for life. I break it into four quadrants to create a compelling vision that covers all areas of life; Healthy and Well Being, Love and Relationships, Vocation and LifeWorks, and Time and Money Freedom. I have found some people have a reluctance to creating a vision for their life. Some are so busy living in patterns they can’t see outside of their present situations or circumstances. Along the path, I’ve come to understand some of these reasons. Past visions haven’t come to fruition. They are too busy with their present conditions and don’t have time to spend “visioning.”

Some believe life is supposed to unfold; however, it unfolds, or they are destined to experience life a certain way, along a predestined path.

It’s a powerful way of revealing to oneself what they would really love to be, do, have, give, and experience in their life. To do so without limitations of time, education, and money.

There are more important things to do in life than create a vision.

When one has a clear vision for their life, life gets easier.

Some think creating a vision is wasting time that they could spend being productive.

Becoming the best YOU that you can be. The process of developing a vision will expand one’s potential of their capability.

I’ve experienced most of these in my own life before converting my life from a reactionary, limiting mindset to a responsive, expanded vision-driven mindset. In doing so, I have achieved so much abundance, opportunities, freedom, and a real true love for the life I’m living today. That’s what I want for you. To experience loving your life even more than you already do!

Creating a vision opens the door to even more appreciation, happiness, and love. Developing a vision reduces the power of one’s circumstances over them. Healing From Within By Rocky Uchimura

The Buddha talked about the “impermanence of all things.” To use a metaphor, life is like the flow of a river. Although it may be the same river geographically, the water flowing through it is most certainly not the same from moment to moment. Thus the river is always changing. The same is true of the human body. Almost all parts of our bodies are rebuilt over time. Stomach cells are renewed every two days. Skin cells last about two week before they are replaced. Red blood cells live for around four months. Your liver is restored in about a year and a half, and your bones are completely regrown over the course of a decade. Some brain cells and certain cells in the eye are never replaced over the course of a lifetime. This means if a disease exists in an internal organ over a long period of time, it’s not the body’s fault. Something besides the body is forcing it to recreate that disease over and over again. It is as if, spiritually speaking, there is some sort of “blueprint for illness” the body is following. Guess what? There is. And it’s coming from you! Each part of the body basically follows your own conception of what you are. It tries to create in alignment with your thoughts. So what happens when you constantly harbor destructive thoughts or self-punishing ways of thinking that do not stem from your essential true self? What happens when you have been very aggressive toward someone else, getting angry or constantly lashing out in discontent? Did you know that sometimes your own thought waves attacking other people can bounce back and hurt you? If you’re clairvoyant, you can see the effects of your thoughts on the outermost part of the spirit body. This outer sheath, or astral body, is an exact representation of the physical body of an individual, right down to each and every hair and nail. When someone begins to fall ill, the first indication is a tear or lesion in his or her astral body. Soon, the damage begins to affect the physical body, causing lots of strange physical ailments to appear. “If you have become ill, that is most certainly because you have started to harbor some negative thought patterns that have solidified into a kind of mental attachment that will eventually manifest as a particular kind of lesion,” says Ryuho Okawa, renowned spiritual leader and founder and CEO of the fastestgrowing religion in Japan called Happy Science. “Medical doctors will apply treatment to the physical body. But that is not where true healing begins because it doesn’t deal with the original cause of the astral lesion.” Okawa maintains that to accomplish any sort of self-healing 18

you must start by changing your self-awareness and then shift your thought patterns accordingly. “It is not an easy task to see ourselves objectively as if we are looking at ourselves in a mirror,” says Okawa. “We cannot easily understand if our mind is distorted or our ways of living have strayed. For this reason, it is essential to have an attitude of self-reflection and the feeling of gratitude.” Cure illness using your subconscious mind The body follows the mind’s lead. Okawa recommends creating a healthy image of yourself in your mind that is the complete opposite of whatever condition or illness you currently experience and become determined to manifest your healthy image by taking the following steps. STEP 1: Be aware of how you think about your body and any illness that you might have. If you constantly tell the aching parts of your body how bad the condition is, it will not get any better. But to change these habitual thoughts about your body, you need to be aware of them! STEP 2: Develop a positive mindset and take action to correct your condition. For example, think to yourself “Even though I’m experiencing this arthritis or angina or _____ (fill in your condition), I’m taking steps every day to change this condition.” And then take the steps. STEP 3: Include your body in some encouraging conversation. “You’ve done your best so far, body. Thank you! We’re going to be together for a few more years or decades. If you get better, even a little, I can do something for the world and repay my family a bit for all they have done for me. So please get better little by little, day by day. I’ll do all I can to help.” If you do this, your body will start reacting in a positive manner. STEP 4: Be patient. Even if you do not get better immediately, it is important to know that you are gradually changing in the right direction, planting the idea of better health into your subconscious. STEP 5: Be consistent and keep doing things that will help you get better, keep your thoughts positive and be sure to have gratitude in your heart for life and the opportunity to learn and grow! This process works for matters other than illnesses. For example, maybe you think you’re rather unintelligent and do a lot of stupid things. Want to get smarter? Apply the steps above. Catch your inner critic when it says self-destructive things like, “I misread the instructions. Stupid me.” Or, “I didn’t read the letter from the PTA about the meeting and I missed it. How stupid.” If you keep reproaching yourself like this, you will not get any cleverer! Of course, it would be a lie to say to yourself such things as, “I’m a genius today.” Try telling yourself, “I’m getting more and more clever, day by day.” And when you see some

If we think that we are victims of life, gratitude is a hard attitude to own. But the higher truth is that we are the creators of life, and there is a good reason for everything – everything! When we remember that we are each a facet of the One that many call God, then we also can remember that our human experience is a soul building mission. Every experience can be understood to be purposeful and necessary, but also temporary. In fact, every experience is designed perfectly to build a particular set of skills and potentials which we need our soul to embody, in order for us to incarnate fully and to fulfill our true purpose within all of life. Phew! It can be a lot to take in, but it is the absolute truth. A soul is the body of learning we have been building through all of our incarnations. It is the vehicle for our Higher Self to be

able to live within our creature bodies. Our souls are vast, with only a small part available for a particular life-mission. But as we grow more into unity with our eternal true selves, more and more of our soul will incarnate at once, allowing our true selves to reveal our amazing potentials into our lives and our world. Then we can take our place as partners with God to co-create a world that reveals the qualities of experience we always believed it could have. As eternal Beings, we know that growth is often painful, but that pain is always temporary. Even the most horrific things may be necessary to open the capacity for unconditional love and true self-awareness that some souls require to manifest their higher potentials. Not everyone needs those things, but some do. So from the perspective of our true self, we can have compassion on ourselves and on others when suffering is part of our contracts for life. Try to look at it from the perspective of your eternal self… You can see the goal and it is brilliant and important. It is how you become able to manifest your own unique facet of God within all future lifetimes and on unlimited worlds! It isn’t easy to get this potential to awaken within the creature consciousness that is our human selves. The creature within us wants only comfort, security, peacefulness, full stomachs, joyful-sensual satisfactions, ease. Somehow the greater potentials need to be awakened within us; suffering is a powerful tool for awakening. But as I mentioned earlier, suffering is temporary, the potential gifts – once developed – are eternal. This is what our eternal self sees. Gratitude in our creature selves expresses a willingness to grow into our potentials and to do the work needed. That willingness paves the way for our Higher Selves to enter into our lives and make our growth easier, and with minimal suffering. Once we achieve our goals, gratitude flows naturally because we feel wonderful owning new gifts which allow our true self to act within our lives more fully. Life feels joyful and satisfying. But then another cycle of growing and challenging heralds the next phase of work, and gratitude allows our Higher Self to make it easier to accomplish. Why is gratitude so effective? Gratitude generates an energy which is a natural medium unifying our Higher Selves with our creature selves. That unity allows Higher Self to act within our lives to create an easier journey of soul growth.

To nurture the attitude of gratitude, simply remember who you are! Each of us is a part of the Oneness of life, building a human capacity to live in the world. Once here we can partner with the One to create a world we all want to live within. So each challenge can be met with trust in this process and gratitude that we are never alone. Our Higher Self is One with all enlightened Beings and together they will work to bring fulfillment, satisfaction, and joy in the process of growth to our lives. When gratitude is present each circumstance reveals itself to be a gift. If not immediately, then with patience and perseverance it will do so. And in that patience and perseverance, we can remember that we are doing something essential – building a soul muscle that will support our true self to create a wonderful reality on earth for eternity. We are told, a lot, to have an attitude of gratitude. What happens when you find yourself out of the flow of gratitude? What can you do? You can create it! You are a creator, so you can develop and use this skill. Right now, I am sitting outside on a beautiful autumn day and it is easy, so easy to feel and connect with gratitude. With my feet in the soft, cool grass, and the bird song, the sun shining down and the crisp air, it is sooo easy to feel grateful. Unlike earlier today. Earlier today, I realized my phone was not working when a client called; the phone stopped ringing and disconnected, not forwarding the call to my office staff. I had been wondering about the phone since it had been acting up, yet I didn’t want to take the time to check it out -- after all, it’s a bother -- right? So, here I am, on a day already filled, and of course I want to be available for my clients, so I call the phone company. At first, the young woman was short and did not know the answer and hung up. I was frustrated and trying to be grateful. Allowing myself to process the frustration, I became calm and relaxed which then assisted me in connecting with gratitude from the heart, knowing there is somehow a lesson here for me. Playing with the phone for a while, I realize that perhaps it is the SIM card. So, out I go to the store and approach the young lady who had hung up on me. To my surprise, she was very pleasant and had looked up what might be the issue, patiently fixing the problem on my phone, and saving me money. I am very grateful to her. I do not know how things might have been different if I had gone to the store in an attitude of righteousness, anger, or frustration -- any of the egoic emotions that separate us from each other. As it was, it was a very pleasant experience and I expressed my gratitude to her. She seemed unaccustomed

to praise and gratitude. How sad. I suspect my experience would have been different if I had gone in upset and blustery. So, what’s my lesson? Gratitude changes everything. To learn to create and connect with gratitude anytime, even when things are uncomfortable, is a choice. How you can start is by noticing what you are grateful for. Feel the emotion in your heart. Connect with this feeling of gratitude. Anchor it by putting your hand on your heart. Practice this every time you feel gratitude. Another practice I suggest to clients is to feel and connect with your breath before you get out of bed in the morning. Then, with your hand on your heart, connect with the feeling of gratitude. Find three things to be grateful for. Really feel the gratitude. That’s important. If you just go through the motions without the energy and emotion behind them, there will be little change. You may also choose to do this at night before going to sleep, as your subconscious mind will then go over and over those connections, creating a new neuro-pathway, a new program in your biocomputer, so that when you are feeling anything but love and gratitude, you now have a program or habit that you can use to create that feeling of gratitude. All you have to do is put your anchor, your hand, on your heart and connect with the emotion of gratitude. If you have difficulties, you can imagine something that you are grateful about or for. Unconditional Love Lost By Pauline Dettloff

In last month’s article, I wrote about unconditional love. What happens when unconditional love is one-sided? It can happen with a loved one, our children, our parents, our friendships or significant other. As you all know, I write from my heart. I try to love everyone unconditionally. I think we all do because we don’t know where other people are in their minds, their emotions, what has happened in their life, or where they come from. All of us need love. That’s just the way of the world. In the animal kingdom, they may not accept one another, but they still sleep together -- how funny is that. The same thing happens to us. How many of us live in a situation where love or kindness is no longer there? You’re still trying to be nice and show unconditional love to your partner, to your children and people in general, but when you lose the unconditional love towards someone and you get stuck, you have to leave the situation of unhappiness and try to remember when you really loved that person a long, long time ago. Why did it change? What happened to change this person, making them someone completely different now? Or, have you changed or grown? How do you live with that? In your mind and in your heart it’s so completely lost. You start to un feel, you just exist in a relationship that no longer is fun, which no longer serves you as who you are. It’s not being selfish to move on to find someone that makes you happy. You have to be happy with you first! Here’s my suggestion. You only get one

time here. You don’t get a redo and you can’t change anything that happened yesterday…..So STOP thinking about yesterday because you can’t fix it or change anything! Start thinking about today. Start your morning out with a smile and try to keep it all day. I say to myself when I think negatively of the past, “Your life is going to be amazing, even better than I thought.” We can scare up some crazy dark thoughts, but why go there? When I change my thinking, I laugh out loud. Do as they do in the movie, “Sound of Music,” and dance, sing, be silly and be happy. When you start to like you, to love you, nothing else matters because when it comes to your happiness and well-being, your mind and your heart, nothing can matter because you have to unconditionally love you first. We can change our thinking and bring positive energy into our lives. I need to dream; I need to be happy.

Life Summoning Through you Notice it! By Faith Brower

It all starts with noticing your feelings…what is going on for you energy-wise? Is it subtle or are the hairs on your arms standing on end? What is lighting you up? Write it down; don’t lose that feeling, and what it is that caused it. Even if that high is just for a fleeting moment, take note. Don’t forget that thing, idea, person, or place that had your heart racing or filled you with more energy. For me, when I go to Chicago, I feel alive. My energy is elevated and I feel similar feelings as to when I was a child anticipating opening-up presents. It is a “high”, a feeling of anticipation, wonder and awe. I feel this way when I am in the presence of an adorable puppy too. It can happen when I see a play or musical that fills my heart with love because of acts of great kindness, or someone being so gracious to other human beings that I am moved to tears.

Be Thankful Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire, If you did, what would there be to look forward to? Be thankful when you don’t know something For it gives you the opportunity to learn. Be thankful for the difficult times. During those times you grow. Be thankful for your limitations Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

When these moments happen, I am 100% at the moment. I feel vibrant, full of feelings, and very grateful. Abraham-Hicks said on 11/1/98, believe it or not when they were in Chicago:

It is saying, “Do more of this.” The joy-filled high is saying, “Yes” to something. How amazing we have these. Pay attention to them. They are gifts that tell us where to focus our attention, and what more or less of something we need in our lives. Each and every one of us has this guiding system to lead us to more joy and happiness -- designed uniquely for each of us! Pay attention to it, trust it, and enjoy this amazing gift! search outside of yourself for the answers to happiness and peace. Everything you need, however, is found by turning inward. The image that immediately comes to my mind is of a person frantically looking for the reading glasses that are sitting on top of their heads.

Taking Back Control By Susan deCaussin

Everything creates an imprint on your subconscious mind -- an impression on your belief system. And, with enough repetition, you begin to accept these changes as your new, normal state of being. Every day, I’m seeing more clients who are overwhelmed with anxiety, so I started to look for answers. I wanted to understand what changes have contributed to this dramatic shift. Years ago, I made a personal decision to turn off the news programs and avoid drama. Instead, I chose positive, uplifting shows that would feed my soul. And, like many, I began recording them so that I could fast forward through the commercials. Sometimes, though, fast forward isn’t an option. It’s then that I noticed some common themes emerging. In a typical commercial break, there are ads for insurance, prescription drugs, fast food restaurants, home security systems, etc. You get the idea. On the surface, it may seem quite benign and unremarkable. But, what are the underlying messages being conveyed to our subconscious minds? The two most predominant messages are those of fear and lack. Fear is the theme of the advertisements that make you feel like you need more control in your life. Lack is conveyed in the commercials that make you feel incomplete and incapable of happiness without their product or service. These companies want you to believe that their products will make you as blissful as the smiling actors in their ads. And, there’s an entire industry based on threats of cybercrime and the need to insure against unexpected circumstances. Supposedly, if you drive the right car, wear the right clothes, take the right prescriptions and ensure everything you have, life will be perfect, right? Not exactly.

So how do you cope in a world that’s drowning in messages of fear and lack? To create positive change in your life, you don’t need to change the world -- you need to change YOU! When fearful, you’re living in the future instead of being fully present in the now by allowing the “what if’s” to diminish your sense of control. Avoid negative, fear-based chatter and return to living in the present moment. And, when your happiness is based on acquiring “stuff”, you’re constantly chasing shadows, but never feeling complete. By focusing on goodness, you’ll train yourself to gravitate toward it in all situations, and you’ll maintain a vibration that will attract more of the same into your life. Take back control. Don’t allow fear and lack to determine your quality of life. It’s never about what happens to you … it’s always about how you choose to react, and where you decide to place your attention. As a Holistic Health Educator and Life Coach, many people ask me, “What is Holistic Health?” To help those who might be new to Holistic Health, or to provide a deeper perspective for those already familiar with it, I hope this article provides some insights which are helpful. Holistic Health is a process of recovering harmony, balance, and healthy functioning both to the individual and to nature through practices that originate from a connection with nature itself. There are many methods of alternative healing around the world, such as Yoga, Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Herbalism, and Shamanism. But for a practice to truly bring our health back, it must ultimately lead us into a direct relationship that maintains our individual health as well as the health of nature. This process begins through initiating a living practice of staying dynamically engaged with the creative life force, because it is nature itself, and our own body which was created by it, that indicates to us when it is out of balance. It also informs us of what we need to do to correct the problem. It is not as complicated as we might think when we see all that is going on in the world that might seem bigger than we can manage. We are the ones who created the problem, or were/ are affected by those who did, and therefore must find the best ways possible to correct it. 7 Things to Know About Rolfing If You Have Chronic Pain To start: What’s Rolfing? More than 30 percent of adults in the U.S. are living with chronic or severe pain. If you’re part of that sta-tistic, you know how devastating living with severe or daily pain can be. Treating chronic pain, defined as pain lasting 12 weeks or longer, depends on the underlying cause. According to Certified Advanced Rolfer Jenny Rock, Rolfing is a systematic and holistic method of manipulating the muscle and fascia to help the body return to structural balance in movement and gravity. Once this happens, Rock says the body’s natural mechanisms take over and finish the job of correcting these imbalances. Makes sense, right? But how does the practitioner accomplish this? “In a basic 10 series of Rolfing sessions, a Rolfing practitioner systematical-ly addresses the places of strain, misalignment, and restricted motion that exist within the body pattern as a whole,” explains Russell Stolzoff, Certified Advanced Rolfer and senior faculty member at the Rolf Institute of Structur-al Integration. “Sometimes where you feel pain is a point of strain within a larger pattern,” explains Stolzoff. That’s why working with the whole pattern can help dimin-ish pain that is maintained or kept in place by the strain. How is Rolfing different than a deep tissue massage? While Rolfing might feel similar to a very deep massage, Rolfing practitioners will massage the muscles and fascia not only where you’re feeling pain, but all over your body. 7 things you should know about Rolfing if you have chronic pain With chronic pain, there’s a good chance you struggle to understand why your pain persists. Stolzoff says this is a common concern for both the prac-titioner and the person seeking relief. “If pain being caused by a form of serious illness can be ruled out, the chances are good that Rolfing Structural Integration can play a positive role in the treatment of the condition,” he says. Here are seven things that Rock and Stolzoff say you should know about Rolfing and chronic pain before deciding to move forward. 1. Rolfing may help chronic pain. “You should know that Rolfing can be an effective nonmedical, non-drug method to address chronic neuromuscular pain,” explains Stolzoff. Medicine Comprehen-sive Pain Center has incorporated alternative and complementary thera-pies, including Rolfing, into their practices. However, there’ve been limited studies on Rolfing’s effectiveness. Two small studies in 2014 and 2015 and found that Rolfing can decrease pain levels for people with fibromyalgia and lower back pain, at least in the short term. 2. Rolfing isn’t a quick fix. “It took time to get into chronic pain, it will take some time to recover,” ex-plains Rock. Her advice: be patient. A good rule of thumb, she says, is that for every year of pain, allow yourself one month of weekly sessions. Although Rock says you should notice im-provements with every session. It’s also likely that you’re going to need to make ongoing lifestyle changes to assist in maintaining and furthering the changes from Rolfing. “This may in-clude ergonomics, footwear, pillows, yoga, nutrition, etc.,” explains Rock. 3. Rolfing addresses structural (think postural) and functional (think movement) aspects of chronic pain. Rolfing can be helpful when chronic stiffness, compression from injury or surgery, held postures that inhibit fluid motion, or repetitive motion are keep-ing your pain levels up. 4. Rolfing should never be painful. Rolfing is frequently deep and sometimes intense and uncomfortable, yet Rock says that it’s never meant to be painful. “Rolfing should never be more uncomfortable than the chronic pain you’re already in,” she explains. 5. Rolfing may reveal other places of pain. If you’ve been dealing with chronic pain, chances are that is the area you focus most of your energy on. However, with Rolfing, Stolzoff says you’ll discover other places in your body that may be playing a role in your pain.

Once again, we are in the Thanksgiving season of the year. As we look back over the past eleven months, many things might come to mind that was difficult situations that you went through, and of course, some good sprinkled throughout the months as well. Stressful times are exhausting while trying to cope with the lessons and transitions life takes us through, but how we process those times is very important to our soul and spiritual growth. I was touched by an event that happened just before I sat down to write this article. I was thinking about the subject that I would write about in this issue while having my morning coffee. I turned on the news and saw Ellen DeGeneres making a statement defending her sitting next to President George W. Bush during the Dallas Cowboys football game. I thought to myself how nice it was that Ellen was enjoying the game and having fun. However, when I turned up the volume, I got the real story… she was being attacked by social media for being friends with GW! How dare Ellen sit next to and seem to be having a good time with a Republican! I know, it seems quite trite to me as well, however, that is the mood of this country currently. She went on to say to the haters “We’re all different and I think that we’ve forgotten that that’s okay that we’re all different…but just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them.” Profound… She expressed gratitude for having a friendship and enjoyed her day without Attitude. It is hard these days to be friends with people who may have a different belief or hold a different perspective. We need to defend our differences instead of destroying others as self-appointed representatives of the ”thought” police. I have always taught my children to send hugs not prickly thoughts. Remember that people are very fragile and need love and reassurance. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience. We are here to grow and share kindness and good works while learning how to navigate the negative energy.

When I look back on the key things that have changed me for the better, practicing gratitude is at the top. Along with manifestation and the law of attraction, like attracts like, gratefulness is in the realm of magical thinking. I discovered very late in life that I could choose how I wanted to feel. Choosing your thoughts is like planting a garden. You put seeds into the ground with hope and expectations. You know that some of your seedlings will grow tall and beautiful. Maybe even rich and robust. We believe that something good could come out of those tender buds that become spry shoots, eventually turning golden and burnished with sunlight, ready for harvest. We take stock of what we’ve planted and what we’ve grown; of what we put our hearts and intentions into. Gratitude is very much like that. We cultivate and nurture our blessings. We expect that something good will come from what we’re already thankful for. I think of gratitude as setting intentions, incantations we release to the universe. If all prayers are answered, then counting our blessings cannot go unnoticed. What you think about, you will have more of. It’s a universal law. Gratefulness is born from the heart. Sometimes an eager and wide-open heart is reaching for more, or a weary one is praying for less. We’re deeply invested when we declare our gratefulness. Appreciation amplifies our gratitude. Love sends it straight up to heaven’s ears. “I’m grateful for my life, health, family and friends,” becomes “I’m healthy! I love my life and everyone in it!” Gratitude is beautifully soft and tender. It’s a deep “thank you” to a Higher Love that holds us all. It’s a bow to all that is here now and a blissful prayer of possibility for what’s to come.

Sadly, 14 years has passed since this agreement and little has changed. The candy industry is a US 70-billiondollar industry. It should have changed. Help us make this happen.

Ethical Chocolate Companies Looking for a Fair Trade, organic label or an explination of why the souce is child labor free is the best we can do as consumers when purchasing chocolate. Certification progams can only go so far when it comes to eradicating the Worst Forms of Child Labour including slavery. Together they aren’t big enough to be effective. This movement aids in eliminating poverty where child labor becomes symptom. I think of Fair Trade as an idea that we are in early stages of adoption. In the meantime, we have

2.3 million children at risk because they are living in too poor of conditions to be part of a healthy certified farm. These are the children that this organization is geared towards helping. All of the cocoa industry and all of the consumers have to participate together to be effective. I know we can do it. When we reflect on what it means to be healthy, we often think of first, how much we exercise, and then, our diet. There is a tendency to forget that overall health and well-being stem from not only the physical but our mental, emotional and spiritual. Negative thoughts hold a sluggish vibration. If we are constantly holding onto negative beliefs about ourselves, then what are the results we expect to see? The more we fixate on those thoughts, the more energy that travels there. Our body will slowly accumulate over time until that sluggish energy creates blockages and therefore disease. Because our body is performing millions of functions simultaneously, it relies on the fluidity of each of our systems. When we hold a space of gratitude for all that we are, it gives us the confidence to make honoring decisions for ourselves. There is more research surfacing nowadays about the impact our thoughts have on our overall health. When we are grateful for something, we give it the time and attention it deserves. Our body is this fascinating, living being; one where we don’t have to even think about accomplishing the majority of the tasks it performs. We often don’t realize how amazing our body is until something breaks. It pushes us to see what we, perhaps, took advantage of before, to listen differently to the messages it is really trying to tell us. It does not fail, time and time again, to let us know when something is wrong. Take a look at an area in your life that you care a lot about and evaluate all you will do for that particular place. Then imagine what it would look like if you put in half that energy towards your self-care.

Olive Oil 2 ea onion, medium dice 4 ea carrot, medium dice 3 ea celery, sliced 1 lb. gold potato, medium dice 1 ea. butternut squash, medium dice 1 head cauliflower, medium florets ¼ c. red wine (optional) 1 can. crushed tomato 2 T. tomato paste 1 bunch kale, chopped 2 T. oregano 2 t. garlic 2 t. onion 1 gallon Bone Broth/Veggie Stock/Chicken Stock 2 t. White Balsamic/Champagne/White Wine Vinegar Salt and Pepper *Additional vegetable options: cabbage, broccoli, green beans, bell pepper, peas, brussel sprouts

It is not about the concept of being perfect, especially considering the obstacles we navigate in our food culture today. It becomes the act of acceptance of who we are, where we are at, and what we are unfolding into. If we take our knowledge and practically apply it day to day, we will see change. Our body is constantly working for us, whatever state we find it in. We all desire to look a certain way, feel a certain way while keeping our youthful appearance and strength. And this is exactly what eating well does for us. It may not be the proverbial “fountain of youth”, but it gives our body the stability to operate at its highest levels.

In an 8-qt stockpot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté onion until translucent. Add carrot, sauté for 5 minutes. Add celery and continue to sauté. Add remaining vegetables, one at a time, while sautéing for 5 minutes in between. Raise heat to high and deglaze with wine. Add in tomato, tomato paste, and seasoning. Add bone broth or stock of choice. Bring to a boil and lower heat to simmer for 45 minutes. Finish with vinegar and season with salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!

How to Start a Gratitude Journal The simple habit of reflecting on what you’re grateful for can lead to a happier, more content life. All it takes is a few moments of your time, as you write about the things you’re grateful for—big or small. Gratitude journaling helps lower stress levels, gives you a greater sense of calm, and a new level of clarity. You’ll learn more about yourself and gain a fresh perspective that allows you to recognize blessings in disguise. 1. Choose a journal. Traditional journals offer flexibility because they’re durable and portable. Sometimes a new journal is exactly what you need to inspire you to get started. 2. The easiest way to maintain a gratitude journal is by making it a habit. Try attaching it to an existing habit — with your morning coffee or reading before bed. Think of it as something you want to do, not as a chore. As you write in your journal on a regular basis, you’ll start to notice the benefits. 3. Even after you’ve been successfully journaling for a while, it can be challenging to think of new things to write about. If you’ve already written about a certain topic, think of a new angle. Write about special people, favorite places, activities and hobbies that you enjoy, accomplishments and overcoming challenges from yourself or others. Remember, with gratitude journaling there are no rules! Be creative. Feel free to draw, paste photos or cut-outs from magazines. Periodically check in with yourself and notice the positive influence your gratitude journaling has had on you.
