Following last year’s successful celebratory edition of the 20th festival, the festival team continues with the festival boasting an open and bold vision, just as it had been set by Boštjan Cvek. With the festival boasting an open and bold vision, just as it had been set by Boštjan. Alongside the diversity of genre and style, geographical diversity will also spice things up, since musicians from eleven countries beside Slovenia will pay their visit to Cerkno. It is on purpose that we say musicians from Slovenia will be visiting, since the leaders of all three Slovenian-international bands that we have invited to the festival, live and work abroad. This fact does not only confirm the much talked about international recognition of Slovenian jazz, but also its cosmopolitism and diversification, as each of the three Slovenian artists will bring a completely different sound (hi)story to Cerkno. The same goes for all other musicians at the festival, inspired by the same source but taking us to quite different destinations... Don’t be taken by surprise - listen to tomorrow’s jazz today, at Jazz Cerkno from 19 to 21 May! www.jazzcerkno.si

Grencsó Open Collective Plays The Compositions of G. Szabados (HUN, SRB)

For the first time in Slovenia we will listen to an ensemble, led by reedman István Grencsó, interpreting music by the legendary “father” of Hungarian free jazz, pianist György Szabados (1939-2011; he played in Slovenia in the 1980s, solo, and, at Druga godba, with the famous Makuz orchestra). István Grencsó (1956), who drew much attention in the 1980s playing with Szabados, has founded the Open Collective in 1985, which remains his basic formation despite some occasional collaborations with other musicians (e.g. the Kampec Dolores band) and band members changing. He is an extremely skilled instrumentalist, equally at home in the standards and ballads as in the frenetic free jazz outbursts. He has worked with a number of known jazzers, such as Peter Kowald, Tobias Delius and Peter Brötzmann. Szabados’ music is influenced by Hungarian folk music and spiritual jazz.

Na Dunaju živeča slovenska klasično izobražena pevka, skladateljica in inštrumentalistka Maja Osojnik se uspešno preizkuša v sila raznovrstnih glasbah: stara in sodobna klasika, Ježkovi songi, rock, noise, jazz, etno, šanson, improvizacija … V Cerknem bo prvič v Sloveniji predstavila projekt All.The.Terms.We.Are, ki ga je leta 2015 premierno izvedla na otvoritvi festivala Jazz Saalfelden. Ogrodje projekta so pesmi, zbrane na letošnjem albumu Let Them Grow; gre za konceptualni nabor eksperimentalnih temačnih pop pesmi, v katerih preizprašuje teme, kot so identiteta, emancipacija, medsebojno razumevanje, možnosti izražanja same(ga) sebe idr. Pesmi z albuma v izvedbi All.The.Terms. We.Are doživijo intrigantno in fascinantno preobrazbo v daljše kompleksno delo s številnimi glasbenimi tančicami od jazza prek klasike in noisea do zvočnega eksperimenta.
The Vienna-based Slovenian classically trained singer, composer and instrumentalist Ms Maja Osojnik successfully experiments with various music genres: old and contemporary classical music, songs by Ježek, rock, noise, jazz, traditional, chanson, improvisation etc. In Cerkno she will perform the Slovene premiere of her project All.The.Terms.We.Are, that premiered at the opening of the 2015 Jazz Saalfelden festival. The basis of the project are the songs collected in her 2016 album Let Them Grow, a conceptual set of experimental dark pop songs, in which she re-examines themes such as identity, emancipation, mutual understanding, the possibility of expressing ourselves etc. Played with the band All.The.Terms.We.Are, the songs from the album are transformed into longer complex work with multiple music veils from jazz through classical and noise to sound experiment in an intriguing and fascinating way.

The Rempis Percussion Quartet (USA, NOR) Dave Rempis (altovski, tenorski in baritonski saksofon / alto, tenor and baritone saxophones) Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (kontrabas / double bass) Frank Rosaly (bobni / drums) Tim Daisy (bobni / drums)
foto: promo
Vendar The Rempis Percussion Quartet ponuja popolnoma drugačno zvočno pustolovščino od naštetih in drugih bendov, v katerih igra Rempis (The Engines, Rempis/Rosaly Duo, Triage).
This scorching quartet is comprised of some of the most prominent representatives of the vibrant Chicago jazz scene. We know them very well from numerous bands, both the “real” Chicagoans – Rempis and Rosaly also playing in Vandermark 5 – as well as the domesticated one, the Norwegian bass master Håker Flaten, in whose quintet, for example, Rempis and Rosaly play, too. However, The Rempis Percussion Quartet offers a completely different sound adventure from all the bands having Rempis as a member or the leader (The Engines, Rempis/Rosaly Duo, Triage). The quartet name says it all – the emphasis is on percussions and rhythm: the band with two experienced and energetic drummers combines free jazz with West African and Latin American rhythms, adding just the right dose of funk groove to this boiling mixture.

Marko Črnčec (klavir, Fender Rhodes / piano, Fender Rhodes) Ricky Rodriguez (kontrabas, el. bas / double bass, el. bass) Jonathan Barber (bobni / drums)
The pianist Marko Črnčec (1986) is one of the most prominent jazzers of his generation, already well known on the international scene. Črnčec, who currently lives in New York, has graduated in both the classical and jazz piano. In 2010, only one year after his jazz graduation, he published his first two albums, Signature and Moral Interchange. In 2014 the album Devotion followed, and for this year he plans to publish Ruthenia, an album devoted to the great Russian composers of the 20th century. He will record a new album on tour with his latest trio which will start at our festival with its Slovenian premiere performance. Črnčec combines various jazz approaches and also intertwines jazz with other genres. “I consider myself to be a composer who aspires to balance intellect with emotion, while I never forget that music can make people move, dance, and smile.”

Pourtant Les Cimes (FRA) Daunik Lazro (baritonski in tenorski saksofon / baritone and tenor saxophones) Benjamin Duboc (kontrabas / double bass) Didier Lasserre (kontrabas / double bass)
foto: Bertrand Gastaut
Premierno v Sloveniji predstavljamo »skriti biser« evropske improvizirane glasbe.
For the first time in Slovenia we present the “hidden gem” of European improvised music. The French trio took its name from Basho’s haiku and their music is also inspired by haiku poetry and Zen. The trio, originally named after musicians, recorded an album in 2011, taking a longer quote from that haiku as its title, Pourtant Les Cimes Des Arbres; the titles of the four tracks read together formed a haiku. For this reason, the trio’s music, unravelling slowly, with a strong stress on pauses and silence alongside sudden and poignant outbreaks, is being described as organic. Its structure and flow are compared to the natural phenomena such as rain, wind, waves or breathing. “Mythical, spiritual, ritual,” this is how the trio’s music was described by Dan Sorrels for freejazzblog. Daunik Lazro will also perform at the Saturday afternoon concert in a duo with Joe McPhee.

Graewe / Sanders (GER, GBR)

Georg Graewe (klavir / piano) Mark Sanders (bobni / drums)
Angleški bobnar Mark Sanders sodeluje z najvidnejšimi imeni jazza in improvizacije, kot so Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Grimes, Peter Brötzmann, Barry Guy, Charles Gayle, Peter Evans in William Parker. Z Graewejem sta še kako dobro uigrana, saj sta člana kvarteta Frisque Concordance, v katerih igrata še naša cerkljanska znanca John Butcher in Wilbert de Joode.
The German pianist Georg Graewe (1956) is considered one of the most idiosyncratic jazzers and modern music composers. He plays in a variety of formations, from solo and duo through trio (very well known is his trio with Gerry Hemingway and Ernst Reijseger) to large orchestras (GrubenKlangOrchester). On one hand, his pianism is abstract and intellectually challenging, and on the other hand extremely emotional, elegant and open. Since 1993 he has been leading the Random Acoustics label, where he published Stills And Stories, an excellent solo album in 2015. The English drummer Mark Sanders plays with the most prominent names in jazz and improvisation, such as Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Grimes, Peter Brötzmann, Barry Guy, Charles Gayle, Peter Evans and William Parker. He is very well acquainted with Graewe’s playing, since they are both members of the Frisque Concordance quartet, together with our Cerkno friends, John Butcher and Wilbert de Joode.

Pika.« (Thom Jurek, All Music Guide).
At the Saturday afternoon concert at the Music School we will listen to two masters, the saxophonist Daunik Lazro (from the trio Pourtant Les Cimes) and the saxophonist and trumpeter Joe McPhee (he will also perform later in the evening with the Universal Indians with Joe McPhee), both honed in extended playing techniques. Lazro is known for his slow intertwining of the main theme with a strong emphasis on pauses and silence, and McPhee for his blues-inspired spiritual jazz. With their instruments, they cross the borders of conventional sounds. We are in for a real treat as these two exceptional musicians rarely play together. The only album they recorded together, Élan, Impulse (1991), is considered a masterpiece. “This is jazz as trance music, as music spinning through history, and as inspired ranting and raving on the threshold of the unspeakable. (…) This is an astonishing record. Period.” (Thom Jurek, All Music Guide).

Transitory Museum of Minds obstaja vsak dan v letu.«
Slovenian drummer and composer Dre Hočevar (1987), currently living in New York (he appeared at our festival in 2011 with the Boben in Lajna band), has been developing in recent years conceptually sophisticated, complex music at the intersection of free jazz, improvisation and electroacoustic music. In Cerkno, he will introduce the new trio (operating since 2015), which will also be its Slovenian premiere. Hočevar, who has published three praised albums with other ensembles (the last two released by Clean Feed) and plays with well-known names like Nate Wooley and Steve Lehman, describes the new project: “Transitory Museum of Minds is focused on the futures. It sonificates and communicates thought processes, always establishing them as a fundamental means of exploration of sound visions ... It understands improvisation as an open platform with no room for prejudice ... Transitory Museum of Minds exists every day of the year.”

Amsterdam-based trio is comprised of American saxophonist John Dikeman and bassist Jon Rune Strøm and drummer Tollef Østvang from Norway (the last two play in the All Included quintet, a.o.). Trio chose its name from composition by the legendary Albert Ayler, whom – together with Cecil Taylor, John Coltrane and Peter Brötzmann – they cite among important influences who have helped shape their modern free jazz: passionate, muscular, raw and intense. The trio is augmented by the legendary American jazzer Joe McPhee (1939), active since the late 1960s. He was also initially inspired by Ayler’s spiritual jazz, but later has been increasingly involved in sound exploration. Last year, the quartet has published acclaimed album Skullduggery for the Clean Feed label. Highly regarded due to his extended playing techniques, McPhee will also perform at Saturday’s concert at the Music School in duo with Daunik Lazro.

Scandinavian jazz, for many years now, ranks among the most innovative and prominent. This is proved by Cortex, a quartet of young musicians (active since 2007), also playing in many well-known bands such as All Included, Paal Nilssen-Love Large Unit, Bushman’s Revenge, Zanussi 5, Friends & Neighbors, Honest John and The Heat Death. Cortex carry on the legacy of the famous quartet led by Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry, their tight and electrifying interplay also being temptingly groovy. The debut album Resection from 2011 was followed a year later with album Göteborg, and in 2014 with Live! (Clean Feed). The latter was rated four out of five stars in acclaimed monthly magazine Downbeat by critic Peter Margasak, who wrote that Cortex might be “the most exciting and fiery freebop unit to emerge from Scandinavia since Atomic.” In Cerkno, they will present the new album, due out this year.

Večina izmed njegovih črno-belih fotografij prikazuje glasbenike v stanju ustvarjalne zamaknjenosti, v »akciji«. »Igra svetlob in senc daje dodaten zven atmosferi dogajanja,« je njegove portrete jazzistov opisala umetnostna zgodovinarka in likovna kritičarka Anamarija Stibilj Šajn.
At the exhibition, Jože Požrl will exhibit his portraits of musicians who have performed in Cerkno from 2009 to 2015. Most of his black-and-white photos show the musicians in a state of creative ecstasy, in “action”. Požrl (1956) is an art teacher and works for more than 25 years as a freelance graphic designer and photographer. He began to take photos of jazz musicians ten years ago and since then he regularly visits and takes photographs in clubs and at jazz festivals in Slovenia and abroad. He had solo exhibitions at festivals in Koper (Baladoor), Ravne na Koroškem (Festival of Slovenian Jazz), Šmartno (Brda Contemporary Jazz Festival) and Jazzfest Gronau in Germany, a.o. Art historian and critic Anamarija Stibilj Šajn said about his jazz portraits: “The play of light and shadow gives an additional sound to the atmosphere of the stage activities.”

What is sown by musicians in the evening, is already available to be collected and eaten the very next day: improvisations with edible wild plants are held in the forest, on the meadows, and in the form of semi-civilised food, prepared on the spot somewhere on the way or just near the festival tent. “O Come, Ye Music
Ali je napočil čas za »naredimo to skupaj« namesto »naredi sam«?« Nova Muska online music magazine has been organizing and recording round table discussions on particular music themes, and publishing them online as podcasts. This year the discussion title, O Come, Ye Music Commons!?, is more poetical than the topic. The participants (Slovenian musicians, journalists and concert organizers) will try to shed more light on harsh social conditions for making music and for musical creativity in the field of new music and improvised music. “Are the musicians themselves ready for even worse economic and spatial conditions for the scene, are there new ways of organizing musicians who are engaged in local and international trends? Is it time to “do it together” instead of “do it yourself”?” od četrtka, 19. maja, do sobote, 21. maja thursday, May 19, to saturday, May 21
