Nog reën verhoed herstelwerk DALEEN FOUCHÉ
N

THE Montagu Music, Art, Drama and Dance Festival (M.M.A.D.D.) was once again a huge success this year. Young artists, musicians and performers displayed their delightful talent over a two week period that culminated in a prize giving ceremony on Saturday, July 28 at the Montagu Primary School. Festival highlights included performances by the Zeynep Okcu Ballet School from Bodrum in Turkey, the George Musical Theatre Academy, Montagu trained dancers Mthuthuzeli and Aviwe November, orchestral and ensemble performances by the Paul Roos, Rhenish and Bloemhof schools and the choir evening in the Dutch Reformed Church. Festival director Helen Gooderson said it was wonderful to see so many new schools participating and to have such a high standard across the board. “It was exciting to see the in-
crease in art, literature and poetry entries as well.” Approximately 68 schools took part with more than 250 competitors staying in Montagu for at least part of the festival, getting to experience the beautiful town and enjoy the warmth and hospitality of its residents. M.M.A.D.D. was started in 1995 by the Tourism Association, Montagu High School teachers and volunteers and has grown in strength over the past 17 years. In 2011, Helen Gooderson took over the reins as festival director an renamed it the Montagu Music Art Dance and Drama (M.M.A.D.D.) Festival. She simultaneously registered the Rural Arts Development programme (RAD) as a non provit organisation (NPO). The festival works closely with RAD and offers an excellent opportunity for talent-ed youth in all communities to have a performance platform and gives developing

This year RAD was able to sponsor 67 competitor entries in art, music and drama. The next Montagu Youth Arts Festival takes place in August 2013 from 7 - 17. youthartsdev@gmail.com. The full list of this year’s winners can be found on the Facebook Group page. Gooderson concluded saying that the festival would not have been possible without the generous support of many including the Cape Winelands Municipality, Montagu Springs, the Montagu Country Hotel, Avalon Springs, Locarno Dried Fruit, Die Boord, Olive House and Ye Olde Tavern.
Serenade spring and join McGregor in celebrating 150 years of village life McGREGOR’S 2012 Food and Wine festival, which takes place on the first weekend of September, should not be missed, and this year it’s a must-do item on your spring calendar. As always, it will be affordable, fun and informal. The cellars of the Valley will pour delectable wines, the caterers and chefs will offer irresistible fare and the restaurants will create festival menus for the weekend. As village and valley mark a century and half of the founding of McGregor, the buzz will be palpable and the entertainment scintillating. Did you know that McGregor now also boasts an organic bubbly? Have you tried the pinot from Lord’s, the delicious chenin from McGregor Winery, the bril-
liant red blend from Wolfdoring and the robust cabernet from Koningsrivier? There’s more, in the form of highly-rated grappas – made from chardonnay, hanepoot and cabernet. Tanagra also makes aromatic eaux de vies – think lemon, peach and apricot – and sip what is probably a world first, quince eau de vie. Finish your meal with a glass of apricot dessert wine from Kings River Eestate. Whether you prefer gourmet fare or traditional padkos, there are talented chefs and cooks who will provide a mix of contemporary and traditional snacks, dinners, scrumptious bakes and excellent coffee. Nature will, of course, play its role, as gardens are filled with birdsong, the
veld blooms to brighten the path of those taking the popular Rooikat trail, and roadside orchards are a sea of pink and white. Weekend guests should book beds early, as accommodation will be at a premium. Make space in your car boots, as you are likely to take home cases of wine bargains as well as memories of warm country hospitality. The festival takes place on Saturday, September 1 at the Dutch Reformed Church hall from 10:00. Entrance (R60) includes a tasting glass and wine tastings. Contact McGregor Tourism on 0 023 625 1954 or email info@tourismmcgregor.co.za for more information. Visit www.tourismmcgregor.co.za for details of wineries, restaurants and entertainment.

kers verskaf, moes besprekings kanselleer.
as voorsorgmaatreël ontruim. Botha sê dat wynverkope “beter as verwag” was. Die jaarlikse streeksmark was eweneens ’n groot sukses.

)) Hoekom is Bonnievale se water soms modderig? [SM]: Modderige water kom partykeer voor ná pypbreke.

Die krag van ’n vrou Working together WITH extreme weather hitting the Langeberg last week and more bad weather already on it’s way, Langeberg residents are reminded of how fragile a human life is in the face of extreme weather. But residents are also reminded of how well people work together in the face of danger and adversity. Over 52 rescue workers from all over the Western Cape gathered in the Langeberg to join the search for Mirriam Cekiso, an ambulance driver from Montagu whose emergency medical services (EMS) outpatient vehicle was swept away with the flooding river. Helicopters were called out and professional divers are continuing the search. And while professionals are searching, municipal workers worked through wind and rain to clear the Cogmanskloof Pass for drivers. But what is there to do for the ordinary citizen in this challenging time? The answer is to give and give generously. The Langeberg has an opportunity to show that its citizens care about one another. If you are sitting under a blanket, reading this, think about those who do not even have a jersey. If you are full after a recent meal, think about those who have not eaten for a day. But do not just leave it at thinking. Jump into action and give as generously as you can.
Veral my ma en my ouma het ’n groot rol gespeel, my rolmodelle as dit kom by die kategorie waar sterk vrouens vereer word. Diegene wat my altyd inspireer het. Hoewel ek nie my ouma baie lank geken het nie, sal dit wat ek van haar gesien het, altyd voortleef in my gedagtes. Ek dink nou aan my kinderdae, ek was
Another side of the hunting debate PHIL CURTIS from Robertson writes: In reply to Jo Orpen’s letter regarding the controversial photo of the young girl with her first buck (“Shocked at photo”, 7 August 2012), I would like to say that I agree with her contention that the shooting accidents she mentioned could have been prevented. Had her cousins been properly schooled in the use of firearms from a young age, the accidents would have nodoubt been averted. Furthermore, regarding the ability of youngsters to shoot accurately, I would suggest that next time the Wynlands branch of KaapJag has a shooting competition, Jo comes down as my guest, when she will see that many of the youngsters there can shoot more accurately than I can – and I’ve had many years of hunting experience. Apart from this there have been other letters insinuating that hunting is in some way cruel, unnatural and anti-conservation. When we speak of ethical hunting (which is, I am sure, what the young girl’s parents are trying to instil in her, otherwise they would not have proudly displayed her first success), all of these insinuations are false in the extreme. There can be nothing more cruel than herding frightened animals into an abattoir, and yet almost everyone eats meat in one form or another without objecting to supermarkets advertising meat products. When an animal is hunted ethically it suffers far less stress and suffering than a slaughtered one. Similarly, it is Man that has removed the natural predators that help to keep antelope populations under control so that they do not destroy their own environment by over-grazing, so Man’s intervention by ethical means is required for preservation of the species and the habitat. Some people, in their endeavours to be “politically correct”, have conveniently forgotten that they acquired their current status, farms and other inheritances by dint of ancestors who knew how to handle firearms safely and correctly, and that perhaps it behoves us to keep those traditions alive so that we can maintain the standards of civilisation as we know it.

THIS week in the Boland Gazette website opinion poll, online readers were asked if they think that mob justice is right? Readers answered with a resounding no, with 100% and no votes in favour of mob justice.

‘Street nurses’ graduate
THE Western Cape Government Health in the Cape Winelands District proudly celebrated the graduation of 131 community care workers and nine post-basic pharmacy assistants last month. “In 2013 the Western Cape government will celebrate ten years of community based services, but today we celebrate these extraordinary people by taking note that the 3 100 carers in the Western Cape are responsible for 4,5 million home-based visits a year.” These were the opening words of Dr Joey Cupido, deputy director-general of the Western Cape Government Health Department at the event. “These ‘street nurses’, as they are known in communities, visit the poorest of the poor, those that have lost all hope; and they do this no matter the weather or the hours that need to be worked,” she said. Community based services deliver the following health services within communities: )) Adherence support and counselling: Pa-
tients that are required to take medication daily, such as for TB and HIV, are supported to stay on their medication. )) Dehospitalised care: This is the hands-on care that is required by patients who have been discharged from an acute facility and no longer need direct clinical care, but are still not strong enough to manage on their own. Supportive care is given, such as assistance with taking a bath or dressing wounds. )) Prevention and promotion: The dissemination of information on health in general and on how to prevent illnesses in specific healthproblem categories, such as those related to HIV and TB, women’s and child health. Community care workers undergo accredited training that translates into a NQF Level 4, allowing them to further their studies, enabling them to be absorbed into the formal job sector. The nine post-basic pharmacy assistants, who were lauded for their contribution to the distribution of medication to the rural districts, are posted in rural areas.

Support for Wieta Fast Track Project
“O
ur industry has built a reputation for advancing environmentally sustainable wine production. “Now is the time to match that reputation with an infrastructure to promote social sustainability,” said VinPro executive director, Rico Basson, in response to the launch of a fast track project by the Industry Ethical Trade Association or Wieta, which is aimed at speeding up the implementation of fair labour practices in the wine industry. This includes issuing an ethical seal which will be ap-
plied to the wines of those producers who adhere to Wieta standards. According to Basson, the initiative was intended to increase the confidence in South African wines both domestically and internationally, and to capitalise on the industry’s global leadership in eco-sustainable production. “VinPro supports the principle of ethical trade fully, as well as the Wieta accreditation process and proposed seal.” For more information visit www.vinpro.co.za or www.wieta.org.za.

Volgens dr.

CELEBRATING OUR1st ANNIVERSARY WE ARE

M A I N
Deli | Bed & Breakfast
A year has passed since we first opened our doors, and we would like to thank all our customers for their wonderful support during the past successful year. As is often the case, with all the good, there is always a bit of sad…we have to say goodbye to our chef, Zandi Beetge. Zandi and her family are relocating to Bloemfontein, and we wish them all the best for the future. We would like to thank Zandi, for all her hard work during this period, from setting up our kitchen to the training of our staff. With this knowledge sharing, our staff has become the proud and professional waitrons and chefs they are today. By allowing them the opportunity to gain so much experience and expertise under her watchful eye, they can now cook and prepare all items on our menus flawlessly on their own. This will ensure that we will be able to continue providing quality and delicious meals to our guests on a consistent basis. Thank you for this, you will be sorely missed!
It has always been our philosophy to give
something back to the community in celebration of a birthday. This year, we have decided to, give back to the children of the Herberg Children’s Home in Robertson. The winemaker of Springfield Estate makes the most superb red blend called Thunderchild,
of which the name has been very appropriately chosen – the children have been described beautifully:
“These children are nature’s wonders who fight through the most threatening and thundering clouds – children that overcome the darkness with the light and beauty and power of an electrical storm, in such a manner that we who deal with them, often stand amazed by their ability to shine brightly after darkness, trauma, hurt and longing. They are in the real sense true Thunderchildren”. These children have been removed from their parents’ care, as the circumstances at each home presented a variety of social problems. The cause is heart-warming and it has been very successful to date.
Every child deserves the best opportunity and chance of becoming someone great, and for the months of August and September 2012, we would like to invite everyone to come and enjoy a bottle (or more!) of Thunderchild at our restaurant. The profit made on each bottle of Thunderchild, will be donated to the education fund of Herberg Children’s Home in Robertson. Come and drink for the children! FOR OUR OTHER BIRTHDAY SPECIALS, PLEASE ENQUIRE IN STORE! THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT, WE HOPE TO CELEBRATE ANOTHER GREAT YEAR!
