‘Police’ involved in house robbery Four “policemen” robbed a Klapmuts bar owner and his friends at their home in Mnyama Street in F-block, Mbekweni on Wednesday morning.

According to Thabo Tsolo, owner of the premises on which Amani Masunga, owner of a bar in Klapmuts, and two friends live, four men wearing police uniforms came to their house claiming that they want to search the house for drugs.

They ordered the men to lie down and handcuffed them.

They allegedly told the victims that they are going outside to fetch the police dogs, but instead fled the scene with two cellphones, a Samsung tablet, a DVD player, and R10 000 that Masunga would allegedly have banked later that morning.

Police spokesperson sergeant Ncebe Vanqa, said no arrests have been made and a case of house robbery is being investigated.

Residents in Mbekweni got a huge fright when an out of control vehicle almost crashed into their homes.

Bakkie-chaos in Mbekweni A bakkie, which was allegedly stolen in Mbekweni, landed on its roof only minutes after hitting and injuring a pedestrian in the vicinity.

According to Mbekweni Police spokesperson, Sergeant Ncebe Vanqa, police attended an accident scene in Mohajane Street, BBlock, Mbekweni, where they found a pedestrian sitting on the sidewalk with a swollen right leg.

According to an eyewitness, the driver of a navy blue Ford Ranger bakkie was driving at high-speed when he lost control of the vehicle and swerved off the road, hitting the victim who was walking on the pavement.

that the driver of the same bakkie had yet again lost control of the vehicle in Goniwe Street and overturned, landing on its roof in the yard of one of the Drommedaris houses.

The suspect fled the scene.

Vanqa said one of the house’s residents was injured and taken to Paarl Hospital for further treatment.

It is alleged that the suspect stole the bakkie from his father’s boss while claiming that he wanted to wash it. Instead he allegedly drove off with the bakkie, resulting in the two collisions.

Vanqa said a case of reckless and negligent driving had been registered.

However, the suspect is yet to be arrested as police are still busy with the investigation.

) Theft of tools: The Paarl Police would like to warn building contractors and businesses to take precautions with their tools, after numerous incidents of burglaries and theft have been reported where tools have been stolen. A recommendation is to make use of the Data Dot system.

Two unknown black males approached him, after which he suffered a black-out, the suspects locked his co-workers in the back of a truck and took off. The truck was later found in the New Rest area, Wellington. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. No arrests have been made yet, a case of highjacking and theft has been opened. ) Attempted robbery: On Sunday 10 August at 06:30 the Mbekweni police attended to an incident which took place in Mpumelelo Street, O.R section, Wellington. It is believed that Achmat Sultan was opening his spaza shop when five African males approached him, one holding a firearm.

After a failed attempt at trying to gain access to the shop, the men fled the scene and nothing was taken. A case of attempted robbery has been opened and one of the suspects has been identified. How to solve “what shall I do with my life” As matriculants gear up to write one of the most important exams in their life, a large number are facing an additional source of stress – their indecision about what they are going to study next year.

“It is important for school leavers in this situation to deal decisively with the issue, as pushing this stress to the back of their minds while trying to focus on their exams will impact negatively on their ability to perform to the best of their ability,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution.

Coughlan saysthat learners in this situation constantly battle the stresses of exams as well as uncertainty about their future, and that this will take away from the all-important focus required to perform when writing their papers.

tive finger in your life. You would be doing yourself a disservice to not consider design if you are very creative - even if you did not do Visual Arts at school. The connection between school and what you do next is not totally linear.

Consider your subjects, marks and your interests; those things that make you feel happy and alive, and take it from there. ) Do your homework There are countless institutions and courses out there. It is no longer the case that a university degree is the only option if you want a successful career – not only are there interesting options in the diploma and higher certificate space, but degrees themselves are now widely available from registered private higher education institutions that may well offer you an experience more suited to your needs.

Many private institutions offer specific additional focus areas such as work-integrated courses with the sole aim of equipping you to perform on the job from day one. There are also far more options available today than there were even five years ago – new fields, new courses, new institutions, new opportunities. There is a strong chance that what you have been told at school is based mostly on what your teachers know and experienced, so do your own homework. ) What do you want to do after matric?

Draw up a shortlist and put your concerns to rest once you have determined which courses interest you, check to see that you meet the entrance criteria and find out when applications close, it is sooner than you may think.

Diarise when the application for each course needs to be submitted and get them in on time. Make sure you submit more than one

application, for more than one option to more than one type of institution. Put your concerns aside and focus on doing your absolute best in your final exam. “Although you won’t be worrying about your post-matric direction anymore, the options will simmer in your subconscious, and you will almost certainly, when the time comes, know exactly which road to pursue,” Coughlan says.

You the Entrepreneur: Thinking differently DAVID MALHERBE The last couple of weeks I’ve consulted with a number of people who want to start new businesses or who have recently started one. One of the biggest challenges seems to be the management of business finances.

Some people hear about government’s plans to support upcoming entrepreneurs and then think they have a right to money and contracts, although they hardly have any business experience and have no infrastructure at all.

Other people have trouble managing the money they receive for goods and services rendered in such a way that it will grow the business, and even more so, a book keeping system.

Without a thorough record keeping system you will not be able to manage your business’s finances well.

When you earn a salary, the money you earn is yours to spend, but when you have a business, the money you receive need to pay numerous expenses before you can use some of what remains for yourself.

I say some of what remains, because some money must be retained in the business to grow the enterprise.

When you exchange your salaried employment for a business of your own, one of the biggest adjustments is the realisation that you do not really look forward to the end of the month anymore, because it now becomes a time for paying salaries and many other expenses.

Furthermore, you cannot shift the blame for things gone wrong to your boss or anybody else anymore.

As owner of your own business the final responsibility rests with you.

But with the responsibility also comes the benefits of being your own boss and the freedom to direct your business towards the goals that you’ve set for yourself. Although working for oneself may often be challenging, the benefits and personal growth may perhaps outweigh the challenges by far. But you’ll need to adopt a disciplined lifestyle to make it work.

If you start a business with the idea that now you’ll have lots of money to enjoy life, you’ll be surprised at how quickly it can disappear. Western Cape Government Health advises parent to apply following safety tips to help prevent burn injuries from occurring: ) Invest in a cordless kettle.

View your kettle as a weapon. ) Put all hot drinks, hot cooking oil and hot porridge out of reach of children. ) Do not carry urns or pots of boiling water around while there are toddlers on the floor or children running about. ) Turn pot handles away from the front of the stove. ) Put candles in a deep glass bottle with sand at the bottom so the candle will be extinguished if it falls over. ) Repair all faulty electrical plugs and leads. ) Report stolen cover plates on power poles or substations with broken fences or locks. ) Do not leave children unsupervised near matches, candles, lighters or fireworks or when they are in or near the kitchen. ) Lock paraffin and other flammables, including “safe” gels away. ) Do not cover braai fires with sand. The heat stays in the sand for hours and will burn unsuspecting feet walking over the sand.

serving to children to make sure it is cool enough to eat. ) Should anyone sustain a burn injury involving flames, the victim should stop, drop and roll to put out the flames. ) Do not touch victims injured by an electrical current before the current has been disconnected– use a stick or nonconductor to avoid rescuer injury or death. ) The heat from a fire, hot water or electrical burn will continue to burn the tissue long after the offending contact is removed. It is essential to stop the burning by keeping the burnt body part under cold running tap water for 20 minutes. Do not use ice or ice water; it can cause frostbite because the skin is already damaged. ) Do not apply butter or any oil-based product to a burn injury, the oil can trap the heat and make the burn deeper over time.

Burn injuries happen in seconds, but can change a person’s life forever. Recovery is a life-long process – it continues long after the person is discharged from hospital – and rehabilitation starts on day one.

Burn injuries not only affect the injured, but also the families who love and support that person, therefore Western Cape Government Health urges parents and caregivers to be aware of the dangers posed and to take steps to keep their families safe.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality hosted a Women’s day event on 9 August in Ashton to celebrate women, to inspire change and create a unified Cape Winelands. Cllr Clara Meyer and 300 women from across the Cape Winelands municipal district attended. The women were inspired through a phenomenal motivational speech and the lucky draw made them feel extra special, as they received food hampers and blankets. Teen Talk will be broadcast live every Saturday from 09:00 until 10:00.

The first show started with talks about the wave of teenage pregnancies in Paarl and surrounding areas, with facts from experts and affected families.

The Teen Talk team consists of 14 youngsters from the Drakenstein between the ages of 14 and 17.

The programme forms part of the Children’s Radio Foundation’s project to develop community radio stations. The Children’s Radio Foundation together with Radio KC, train youth reporters and empower them with the skills needed to make their voices heard and to discuss relevant issues affecting the community.

The foundation held training sessions preparing the children on how to interview, research and produce a radio show that empowers youth. Teen Talk aims to educate and entertain, inform and empower the youth and the community of Paarl, Wellington and surrounding areas.

Getting to the bottom of every issue raised, the young reporters will prepare their shows by conducting interviews with experts, infected and affected parties. Throughout their research, Radio KC teenage reporters also challenge their own points of view by challenging

The self-funded Boland School for Autism will be hosting a Golf Day on 22 August in aid of various necessities required by the school, for its learners.

The school currently facilitates 19 children; each child requiring a specialised teaching program (Individualised Educational and Development Programme) to ensure they may reach their full potential.

Funds generated on the day will be invested in the well-being of the children, and to achieve the school’s long-term goal of owning their own facility with full-time specialists and accommodation for children who do not have access to the special services autistic children need to grow and develop.

The fun-filled golf event will host various competitions and activities, which will be followed by dinner and prize-giving. The fourball also includes a gift bag and green fees.

On 16 August (tomorrow) the final auditions for the Global Spotlight Talent Search Competition will take place at the Frank Pietersen Music Centre.

Matrics encouraged to take prelims seriously As the penultimate matric examinations are only a few weeks away, matriculants would do well to use the opportunity of their prelims to the full, an education expert says.

“The temptation is there to write these exams off as insignificant, since many learners would already have submitted tertiary education applications based on their previous performance.

“Others have moved their focus to the final exam as their last chance to earn the points for admission to particular programmes,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education, SA’s largest and most accredited

private higher education institution.

However, the prelims fulfil a very important function and matriculants should take them as seriously as they do the last exam of their school careers.

“Remember that even if you have a conditional offer from a university or private education provider, it could still be withdrawn. You may still need to rely on your performance in the prelims for placement purposes and you cannot afford to ignore the fact that the results do contribute to your year mark that is part of your investment in your final result,” she says.

The most important function of the prelims though, is to give you

an opportunity to consolidate the learning of the past twelve years, and provide you with the necessary peace of mind to enter your final exams relaxed and refreshed – a mindset which could make a significant positive difference to your performance.

“Treat these exams as a measure of where you are, and use them as a valuable tool in your preparation for your finals,” she adds.

She says learners can use the prelims in several ways to boost knowledge and strategy by: ) Consolidating study methods. ) Learning better stress management methods. ) Testing how long it actually takes to master pieces of work, so

that the learner’s final study plan is accurate in terms of how much time needs to be allocated for revision of subjects. ) Developing the notes – mind maps, annotations, etc. - required for the final exams. ) Setting up small study groups where peers can learn from one another.

She encourages learners to use the prelims to consolidate their knowledge and identify the gaps in their approach while there is still time to get help.

You can achieve the same with writing past papers independently or in a small study group. If you do well, use that achievement to motivate yourself, not slack off.

“If you don’t, stay calm and identify the challenges that need addressing. The prelims are a wonderful opportunity for you to get yourself in top form while you still have time, she says.

Remember to be mindful of the factors that will boost your mental and physical wellbeing, and practise these as well: stress management, exercise, eating well and getting enough sleep. You have one shot for your finals, but the prelims are your test run.

They allow you to make the changes you need and to cope better during the finals, which are just a few months away.

Inoue-ha Shito Ryu karate Paarl is hosting the national open tournament in Paarl on 30 August.
