The official start of the 53rd Berg River Canoe Marathon took place on Wednesday 16 July. The event was attended by Executive Mayor of Drakenstein, Advocate Gesie van Deventer, Executive Mayor of Swartland, Tijmen van Essen, Western Cape Minister of Sport and Cultural Affairs, Professor Nomafrench Mbombo and Drakenstein Mayco member for Sport, Culture and Youth Development, Aidan Stowman. Minister Mbombo had the honour of firing the starting pistol to commence the race, sending canoeists on a 240 km journey beginning in Paarl and finishing in Velddrif. Drakenstein Municipality has been a sponsor of the renowned competition for many years.

Bekende winkel weer beroof

Die toneel Sondagaand op die hoek van Jan van Riebeeckrylaan en Lady Greystraat nadat drie motors met mekaar gebots het.

Talle in botsings beseer MARYKE SWART Minstens 11 mense is die naweek in verskeie padongelukke in Drakenstein beseer.

In die jongste voorval is ’n vrou Sondagaand beseer in ’n botsing tussen drie motors op die hoek van Jan van Riebeeckrylaan en Lady Greystraat.

Dit word beweer dat die bestuurder van ’n wit Toyota Corolla ’n rooi verkeerslig verontagsaam het en voor twee aankomende motors ingedraai het. ’n Passasier in die Corolla is met beserings hospitaal toe geneem.

Niemand anders is in die botsing beseer nie.

Saterdag is altesaam nege mense in twee verskillende enkelvoertuig-botsings beseer.

In die eerste ongeluk is vyf mense beseer toe ’n minibus omstreeks 11:30 teen ’n paal in

Monicastraat, Dal Josafat gebots het.

Die insittendes het geringe beserings opgedoen.

Omstreeks 15:10 is nog vier mense beseer toe ’n motor naby die Verkeersdepartement in Jan van Riebeeckrylaan wat in ’n voor beland het. Die insittendes van die motor is vir onderskeidelik skouer- en kniebeserings en kneusen snyplekke behandel. ’n Man (55) het ook Vrydagaand kneusplekke en ’n moontlike nekbesering opgedoen toe hy kort voor 19:00 in Klein Drakensteinweg deur ’n motor raakgery is.

Die Drakenstein-munisipaliteit het by navraag oor padveiligheid in die gebied gesê verkeersoperasies word dwarsdeur die week op paaie in Drakenstein gehou om die veiligheid van motoriste te verseker.

Hulle het ’n beroep op motoriste gedoen om verantwoordelik te wees, versigtig te bestuur en by die padreëls te hou.

’n Bekende klerewinkel in Lady Greystraat het vandeesweek vir die tweede keer vanjaar onder diewe deurgeloop.

Diewe het vroeg Dinsdagoggend by Edgars ingebreek.

Volgens ’n woordvoerder van Paarlpolisie het polisielede omstreeks 05:45 Dinsdagoggend op ’n geaktiveerde alarm gereageer.

Met hul aankoms by die toneel is dit gevind dat ’n winkelvenster met ’n klip stukkend gegooi is. Die verdagte/s het klere uit die winkel gesteel en van die toneel gevlug.

Die voorval kom byna vier maande nadat diewe ook deur die loop van die nag by die winkel ingebreek het. ’n Sementblok is toe na bewering gebruik om ’n winkelvenster stukkend te gooi. Handelsmerk-jeans is tydens dié insident gesteel.

Niemand is nog in verband met Maandag se inbraak in hegtenis geneem nie.

Die ondersoek duur voort.

Golden Games to take place next week A District Elderly Golden Games event will take place on Wednesday 23 July at Boland Park Stadium in Worcester.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality will host the event in partnership with the Western Cape Older Persons forum, Stellenbosch Municipality, Drakenstein Municipality, Breede Valley Municipality and Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.

This comes after the Golden Games was stopped a few years ago.

The target for this event will be to get 1 400 elderly people across the district to participate.

The purpose of the event is to sensitise elderly people about their rights and to instil a sense of dignity.

Wie het die reg om uit te sit?

Die reg om uit te sit in terme van die PIE Wet word gegee aan ’n geregistreerde eienaar van ’n perseel of aan ’n persoon in beheer van die betrokke residensiële perseel. Persone in beheer van ’n residensiële perseel sluit in: ’n Regmatige huurder; ’n Eksekuteur wat die boedel waarin die perseel val administreer; Enige ander agent wat volgens die regmatige instruksies van die eienaar optree.

Wie kan uitgesit word?

Mense wat uitgesit kan word sluit die volgende mense wat die perseel okkupeer, in: Huurders in verstek wie se huurooreenkomste beëindig is; Verbandgewers in verstek wie se verbande gekanselleer en die eiendom in eksekusie verkoop is; Onregmatige okkupeerders of plakkers; Enige ander persoon wat nie die uitdruklike toestemming van die eienaar of persoon in regmatige beheer van die perseel het nie.

Wat is die spesiale oorwegings?

Wanneer ons howe met aansoeke om uitsetting te doen kry is die howe verplig om spesiale oorweging te skenk aan bejaardes, kinders, mense met gestremdhede en ook huishoudings onder leiding van vroue. Alle feite en omstandighede van hierdie persone moet aan die hof uitgelig word vir die evaluering van die

sogenoemde spesiale oorwegings.

Regmatige uitsettingsprosedure: Stap 1 – Kennis van uitsetting ’n Kennis van uitsetting waarsku die okkupeerder van die beoogde uitsetting en voorsien gewoonlik die okkupeerder van 30 dae om die perseel te ontruim. Dit gee ook aan die partye die geleentheid om skikkingsterme of terme en tydsraamwerke vir die ontruiming van die perseel te onderhandel. Hierdie kennis kan deur die Balju van die Hof per hand by die perseel of deur middel van geregistreerde pos beteken word.

Stap 2 – Hofaansoek om uitsetting ’n Hofaansoek by wyse van ’n kennisgewing van mosie tesame met ’n ondersteunende beedigde verklaring moet deur die Balju op die okkupeerder en die relevante munisipaliteit beteken word. Dit sal die datum van die hofverskyning asook die datum waarop die okkupeerder opponerende hofdokumente moet liasseer indien die okkupeerder van plan is om die aansoek om uitsetting teen te staan, aandui. Die okkupeerder moet die hofaansoek ten minste 14 dae voor die hofdatum ontvang.

Stap 3 – Verskyning in die hof vir die aanhoor van die aansoek om uitsetting ’n Hof is verplig om alle relevante feite rakende die aansoek om uitsetting op die bepaalde datum van die verhoor te oorweeg. Regsverteenwoordigers van die partye sal ’n geleentheid gegun word om mondelinge en geskrewe regsargumente namens die onderskeie partye aan te voer. Die hof sal dan, by wyse van ’n hofbevel indien die aansoek suksesvol is, die okkupeerder genoegsame tyd gee om die perseel te ontruim wat gewoonlik tot 1 maand sal wees met die bepaling dat indien die okkupeerder versuim om in hierdie tyd te ontruim die Balju geregtig sal wees om, op die onkoste van die okkupeerder, die okkupeerder en al sy besittings van die perseel te verwyder.

Stap 4 – Gedwonge uitsetting van die okkupeerder deur die Balju Die Balju sal eers ’n kopie van die Uitsettingsbevel op die okkupeerders beteken. Dan sal die Balju geregtig wees om die okkupeerders met mag te verwyder indien die datum

Good coffee is not enough DAVID MALHERBE In my line of work, I often meet clients in coffee shops and because I often advise business owners on managing their businesses, I am very alert regarding the quality of service businesses render.

Each business owner should ensure that they know what good service means to their clients.

From certain businesses clients expect speedy delivery, like when a builder orders sand or bricks. From a motor dealer clients expect, among others, excellent after sales service.

If the service is lacking, no matter whether you sell products or services, customers look for alternative suppliers.

Let us look at the coffee shop ex-

ample, seeing that they sell products accompanied by service delivery.

What do I look for in a coffee shop? Being a coffee shop, one will expect that quality coffee is a given.

But what goes with the coffee?

Let us first look at why people visit coffee shops?

Sometimes it is a teatime meeting place for women. Business people meet clients there because nowadays many have offices at home and need a meeting place. I see many of them regularly because I am one of them.

People working from home may find that a home office becomes a lonely place. So they take their laptops and go work in a coffee shop.

For instance, I like to write these weekly articles in a coffee shop.

So what is important besides the

coffee? Atmosphere, made up of a combination of the interior, background music, the location, etc. and most important – the service rendered by waiters.

Are they friendly and do they make you feel welcome? Do they know the menu by heart?

Also, can I easily access the Wi-Fi network with my computer? In two coffee shops the past month I could not access the internet because the shop’s Wi-Fi was not up to standard.

This limits the work I can do there, as well as the quality of service I can render to my client.

So, what aspects of service are important to your clients when they do business with you? HOLIDAY FUN. Arise Billionaires held a holiday programme for children during the winter school holidays. There were soccer games as well as fun activities for Grade 1-2 learners. The children were also treated to lunch.

As part of Ramadan weekly youth programmes, members of the Paarl Muslim Youth Movement distributed bread to the needy in different sections of Paarl and Mbekweni on Saturday 12 July. With the youth is Sheigh Zareer Moerat (in grey robe), Imam of the Paarl Muslim Jamaa.

Teach your children to recycle Did you know - SA ranks among the top six countries worldwide in terms of recycling rates for cans!

Harry the Hominid, Maropeng’s spokeshominid, says that today the can is the most successfully recycled primary packaging in SA with beverage cans now only contributing less than 1% of litter.

Recycling makes great “cents”, says Harry. Not only is it a great way of saving raw materials but it also reduces the need for landfill. Did you know, for example, that the volume of all cans recovered during the last ten years (this means the space these saved cans take up) equals the volume of major landfill sites designed to accommodate all the rubbish of a major city like Johannesburg over a 15-year period!

Harry says that recycling also creates much needed jobs for many unemployed and underemployed entrepreneurs who operate as collectors. Of the 40 000 people earning or supplementing their income by collecting, about 80% have no other formal means of employment.

Collect-a-Can is the company responsible for the collection of cans and tins for recycling in South Africa.

Cans should be recycled.

They urge all parents to teach their children: •To recycle both food and beverage tins •To encourage everyone in the family to do this, including friends

•Start a collection point at a local school, shopping centre or community hall.

“Remember every can recycled not only helps the environment, but also helps alleviate poverty,” says Harry.

Ride with your children to ensure safe cycling Parents can teach their children to be safe cyclists by going out with them and leading by example.

South African roads are public spaces and cyclists have the right to ride their bicycles on them, but riding a bicycle on public roads is a huge responsibility and it is vital that children are made aware of the rules of the road as well as how to handle a bicycle in a safe and responsible way.

Teaching children to travel effectively by bicycle as they get older develops patience, discipline, self-reliance and personal responsibility.

Learning to cycle also teaches essential driving skills that will make them safer and more courteous motorists later in life. Like swimming and driving, the safety of cycling is determined primarily by behaviour; education and skill development.

An important consideration for cycling with children is matching route selection and adult supervision to the developmental and skill levels of the child.

“Riding with children affords a parent the opportunity to supervise their cycling, especially at edge locations such as street crossings. Parents should model consistent behaviour by stopping and looking both ways before proceeding, and invite the child to assist in assessment of traffic conditions,” says Karin Pohl, general manager of the Pedal Power Association.

Although many parents and children are tempted to think of pavements as safe places for children to ride, travelling any distance on a pavement inevitably results in crossing intersections and driveways or

crossing roads mid-block – this is illegal in South Africa unless there is a specific cycle path on the pavement. Such movements are associated with the most common collision types for child cyclists, in part because of children’s errors, but also because motorists are less likely to notice bicyclists entering their path from pavement locations when they are focused on traffic approaching in the roadway.

A leading contributor to car-bike crashes is cycling on the wrong side of the road, which is also illegal in South Africa.

At intersections, where the vast majority of car-bike collisions happen, other drivers aren’t expecting or looking for traffic approaching from the “wrong” direction.

When riding with a child to supervise their bicycling, an ideal riding position is slightly behind and to the right of the child, with the child setting the pace.

This position allows the parent or instructor to watch and communicate with the child, while also diverting overtaking traffic to pass at a larger distance from the child Children between the ages of 7 and 10 can develop the necessary traffic and handling skills to operate safely on low speed, low traffic two-lane residential streets.

By their early teens, they can develop the skills to handle multiple lane streets.

The Pedal Power Association of South Africa offers helpful information that parents should share with their children from an early age: . You must always wear a helmet . You must ride in single file . You may not hold onto any other

vehicles . You may not deliberately swerve from side to side . You may not carry another person or object that prevents you from seeing where you are going, and from having complete control over your bicycle . If you are riding on a public road where there is a bicycle lane, you must use that lane . You may ride on any road, except on a freeway or a road closed to cycling . Obey all traffic laws, including stopping at red traffic lights and all stop streets. Proceed through intersections only when it is safe to do so It is important for everyone to check their bicycles before setting out – you do not want to break down in the middle of a busy road, or far from help! Check the bikes together and set an example to your children.

Checklist before your bike ride: . Are the tyres free of holes, cuts or any embedded? . Are the wheels pumped hard enough? . Are the wheels tightly secured? . Check both the brakes - are they working? . Are the gears working as they should? . Is the chain clean and well oiled? . Is the handlebar and saddle firmly fixed? . Are there any cracks in the frames or forks? . Do you have a saddle bag with emergency spares attached to the bicycle that includes a spare tube, a patch kit and tyre levers? . Do you have lights and reflectors on the bicycle (red at the back, white at the front)

The Shoutush Shabaab Qasidah (Islamic devotional singing) group from Wellington, is the first and only group of its kind in the Boland area. They entertained the youth with their inspirational singing on Saturday 12 July at the Lapperts Street Madressah complex.

BOLAND UMPIRES ) The Boland Umpires Association’s AGM will be held at Boland Park Cricket grounds in the auditorium on 26 July, at 10:00. We, the management, would like to welcome everyone young or old. We especially urge women, Black Africans and students to come and join our association. It’s of utmost importance that all current umpires attend this special meeting. Issues like the way forward will be discussed.

Also in August 2014 the CSA umpiring course will be presented by Karl Hurter and Murray Brown at Boland Park. The respective dates for this course are 9/10 and 16/17 August. It is compulsory for all current umpires to attend this refresher course. Anyone interested in becoming an umpire is very welcome.

The 53rd edition of the annual Berg River Canoe Marathon started in Paarl on Wednesday. This gruelling race covers more than 230 km of icy river water. Here one of Paarl’s favourite sons, Luke Stoman sets of on another journey towards Velddrif.
