Opportunity for young entrepreneurs The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation is now calling on grade 12 and first-year university students with entrepreneurial talent to apply for the university fellowship opportunity. By applying for the fellowship, The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation is offering individuals an opportunity to develop as responsible entrepreneurs. Anthony Farr, CEO of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, says: “The Foundation invests in a long-term legacy of greatness through inspiring and developing individuals who will become high impact, responsible entrepreneurs who are capable of shaping and transforming the future of Southern Africa.” Applications are now open and close on 30 April 2015 for current Grade 12 learners. Current firstyear university students have until 31 August 2015 to apply. The foundation supports degrees in the fields of commerce, engineering and science (exclud-

ing medicine), law or humanities (majoring in politics, philosophy or economics). Only candidates furthering their education at the following universities can apply: University of Cape Town, University of the Western Cape, TSiBA (2nd year intake), Stellenbosch University, University of Johannesburg, University of Pretoria, WITS University, Rhodes University, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the University of the Free State (2nd year intake). With the Foundation’s firm belief that a solid education is the starting point for any entrepreneurial journey, the fellowship opportunity provides candidate fellows access to a community of like-minded individuals, exposure to thought leaders, mentorship, entrepreneurial mind-set development and full university funding. Visit www.allangrayorbis.org or the foundation’s Facebook page for more information.

Hydrate and stay cool this summer In response to the prediction of very hot weather for the next few weeks, the start of school athletics programmes and the harvest season in full swing, Western Cape Government Health is reminding people of the following guidelines to help prevent heat stroke and exhaustion. Babies, the elderly and people working or exercising in a hot environment are at particular risk for heat stroke/exhaustion. People using chronic medication need to drink extra water during heat waves to ensure that their kidneys are not further stressed. General prevention for all ages: ) Stay out of the sun if at all possible, if not ) Wear a large hat to protect the head from the sun, use an umbrella to add shade. ) Use a small wet towel or cloth under hats or on shoulders to help keep cool. ) Stay hydrated – in the current temperatures, staying hydrated is most important – drink as much water as you need; ) Always carry water with you.

) Should you use a chronic medication, such as high blood pressure or diabetes medication remember that becoming dehydrated places extra stress on the kidneys, drink ample clean water. ) Use a rehydration solution if you are thirsty even though you are drinking water: Mix the following together in a clean bottle 1F water, 8 teaspoons sugar and ½ a teaspoon of salt. This is safe for all ages to drink especially for those people who work or exercise outdoors, such as children practising athletics and road or farm workers. ) Ensure that the elderly and infirm have easy access to water. Tips for babies and children: ) Babies: Breastfeed on demand – breast milk is all that babies younger than 6 months require, you need not give the baby water or tea to ‘cool down’, they only need breast milk. ) Breast feeding mom’s must remember to drink extra water, cold rooibos tea also makes a refreshing and healthy drink. ) Take your baby to the clinic at the first sign of diarrhoea and/ or vomiting.

) Keep babies in the shade or indoors. ) Wipe baby down with a clean damp cloth – this will help keep them cool. ) Do not cover babies in a lot of clothing and blankets; light clothing is sufficient. Older children: ) Keep babies and children in the shade. ) Avoid sports activities if possible, if sport is essential; ensure that there is a lot of water and rehydration solution available. ) Children must wear hats and sunblock. ) Keep children indoors between 11:00 and 16:00. Tips for those working outside: This is for sports people, teachers and/or coaches and employers of builders, gardeners and others required to work outside: ) Keep your head covered, place a wet cloth under your hat to help keep cool. ) Make sure that there is lots of cool, clean water to drink. ) Take regular, short breaks in the shade. ) When taking a break, pour water over your head to help the

body cool down. Symptoms of heat exhaustion/ stroke: Heat stroke can be fatal and should be treated as a medical emergency. Heat exhaustion is a less severe condition but can quickly progress to heat stroke if left untreated. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke occur when the body is unable to lower its temperature to normal levels through the skin or by sweating. Dehydration can cause heat stroke because the body is unable to sweat fast enough to dissipate the heat. Signs of heat exhaustion include: ) Nausea or vomiting ) A pale pallor, (skin colour) ) Tiredness and weakness ) Headache ) Muscle cramps and dizziness If the symptoms are severe or the victim has a heart condition or high blood pressure, seek urgent medical help. Give the person the oral rehydration solution described above. Do not add too much salt – the mixture should taste like tears. Sports drinks or commercial oral rehydration solution are also effective.

Mbekweni shoot-out A 25-year-old man was killed and three others injured in three different shooting incidents in Mbekweni on Sunday. In the first incident, at 01:00 on 18 January, two men were shot in front of their house in Chris Hani after robbers allegedly wanted to rob their house. It is alleged that Bulelani Sankwenkwe (26) and Mmeli Mpolweni (29), were outside their house when four armed men entered their yard and fired shots at them. Sankwenkwe sustained a wound to his right arm and has been discharged from hospital. Mpolweni was shot in his left shoulder and is still recuperating in hospital. At 15:10 police responded to a second shooting incident in

H-Block. Upon their arrival they found two men, Mcebisi Phoswa (25) and Bokang Lefatsa (34), in a shack, lying in a pool of blood. Both were still alive. Phoswa told police that they were sitting inside the shack when two men entered and, without saying a word, fired shots at them before running away. Lefatsa sustained multiple wounds to his head, arm and leg, while Phoswa sustained a bullet wound to his upper torso. Both victims were transported to Paarl Hospital, where Phoswa later succumbed to his injuries. Nine empty 9 mm bullet cartridges and one bullet projectile were found at the crime scene. The police are

looking for Lubabalo Diko (Player) and Mzo, who can help in the investigation. On Sunday night a policeman from Paarl’s Criminal Investigations Department and his family were also in the firing line when two suspects fired shots through their bedroom window in New Drommedaris. The Detective Constable woke up when two people were passing the bedroom window. When he went to investigate, four shots were fired from outside. Fortunately no one was injured. Cases of attempted murder and murder are being investigated. No arrests have been made. Anyone who can assist the police, must contact Mbekweni detectives on 021 868 9926.

NLB to focus more on early childhood development The National Lotteries Board (NLB) would like to encourage more early childhood development initiatives to respond to the organisation’s calls for funding, says Charlotte Mampane, chief executive of the NLB. Early childhood development is critical in ensuring that children have the best chance in life and the NLB would like to see more resources being directed towards these causes. “The NLB is keen to play its part in ensuring that no child is left behind.” Mampane says the NLB is proud of the early childhood development programmes that the organisation has brought under its wings including Refentse Preschool and Day Care Centre in Botshabelo, Free State, which received funding of up to R1 353 900.

The funding was allocated for operations, building renovations and for vehicle acquisition and maintenance purposes. “However, unless the NLB receives applications from early childhood development centres on time and in the correct format, our hands as the NLB will remain tied.” Mampane is pleased to see so many community organisations emerging throughout the country focusing on early childhood development. “We would like to join their fight to give every child in South Africa an adequate start in life regardless of their family circumstances. “We want to build a South Africa where a child’s family circumstances do not determine their destiny,” says Mampane.

As jy self onseker is oor jou kind se vordering, gaan praat met hul onderwyser.

(”Is daardie letter ’n ‘b’ of ’n ‘d’?”)

Star Star Signs Signs CAPRICORN

22 December to 21 January

At this time you are inclined to invest your time and money into making your environment more beautiful and comfortable. You may also wish to enhance your personal appearance in some way, such as getting a new hair style or purchasing clothing, cosmetics, and the like. Social gatherings are also very positive for you now.

AQUARIUS

21 January To 20 February

Significant changes and opportunities face you at this time but making the correct decision about what to do is not easy. This is a period of critical decisions and transition. A major change in your life can occur now (new job, relocating, ending a long-term relationship or beginning a new one, etc.). In fact, it is not unusual for several important changes of this nature to be occurring.

PISCES

Friday 23 January 2015

You the Entrepreneur: What’s in a name? DAVID MALHERBE What name shall I give my new business? Shall I name it after myself, for instance “Joe Soap’s Butchery”, or the town where I live, like “Koekenaap Beauty Parlour” or choose a name that describes what I am doing, for example “Fix-a-Dent Panel-beaters” or a name that has some special meaning for myself. One can certainly name some advantages and disadvantages to each of the above, but I believe that to select the best name it is necessary to have a long term perspective. What will happen if Joe Soap’s son or grandson, Andrew some-

day succeeds Joe in the business? Or what if Koekenaap Beauty Parlour becomes a runaway success and branches out to other towns? The name Koekenaap Beauty Parlour may sit somewhat uneasy in Rondebosch. Last week I drove behind a vehicle advertising a business with a very descriptive name: “Earthquake Mobile Disco.” The name says it all. You can almost feel the vibes you can expect should you make use of their services. It is also necessary to consider a logo or slogan for advertising your business. “We will rock

you!” will go much better with Earthquake Mobile Disco than for example “Music for the moment.” Furthermore, a shorter name usually works much better than one that is too long. “Flame’s Place” is much easier to market and advertise than “The Flame and Grill Pizzeria and Restaurant.” Although the longer one is a lot more descriptive, the shorter one is just so much easier to use, for instance when you answer the phone. The name is also important for branding purposes. To build a brand usually comes with years of

regular advertising and rendering an excellent product or service. Therefore one can also consider whether the name signifies quality or excellence and whether it is short and easy to remember. Add to that the letter type and colours that you will use for branding purposes and you’ll realise that there is more to the name of your business than just putting something on paper. It is important to invest some time considering, selecting and planning the name and branding of your business. David Malherbe is a business and career consultant and lives in Wellington and can be contacted on his webpage www.jedidiah.org.za, or by phone 021 873 0262, or on Facebook “Jy die Entrepreneur.”

20 February to 21 March

Today it is easy for you to concentrate on your work, to eliminate what is superfluous or distracting you from what you really need to do. You have the self-control and discipline to apply yourself to tasks that you may have been avoiding. You want to put your affairs in order and have a greater tolerance for tedium than usual. This is a good time to tackle mundane chores and practical business.

ARIES

21 March to 21 April

This is not the best time to schedule any activity that calls for tact, diplomacy, or caution, as you are inclined to be extremely straightforward, direct, and to the point in all of your interactions. You say exactly what you think, and in fact are even inclined to be verbally aggressive, pushy, or perhaps sarcastic. Your mind is very sharp now, so this is a good time to "attack" intellectual or mental work.

TAURUS

21 April to 21 May

Some change in attitude towards your ideals and spiritual values occurs now. This change is very inner and gradual, so it is not likely that you will have any great concern or difficulty about these changes. A new attitude toward the religious beliefs that you were taught as a child is very likely to develop now.

GEMINI

21 May to 22 June

At this time you enjoy emotional satisfaction and harmony in your home life. Relationships with women run smoothly. If you have a solid emotional base in your life, you will receive the benefits of that. If not, this is a good time to begin making connections with people and also to discover what gives real emotional nourishment and fulfillment.

CANCER

22 June to 23 July

This is a good time to schedule social activities or even business meetings where tact and friendliness would be a plus. You act as a diplomat and harmonizer between people with differing viewpoints. Also, attending cultural events such as an art show or a play is favored. Thoughts of love, an appreciation for beauty, and an aesthetic enjoyment of your surroundings are brought to the fore.

LEO

23 Julie to 24 August

24 August to 23 September

Your desire for pleasure, ease, and affection is brought to the fore and may interfere with work or complicated situations in which you need to be acting assertively and on your own behalf. Your mood and attitude is conciliatory, and your need for love and approval heightened. Social gatherings and personal relationships are favored.

LIBRA

23 September to 23 October

Withdrawing from emotional social contact is favored now, for even when you are with others you are likely to feel separate and alone. Sadness and disappointments in your personal life are also probable now. Inadequacies and flaws in your friends or lovers are particularly bothersome to you now, and you may feel that you have nearly exhausted your patience for dealing with these problems.

SCORPIO

23 October to 23 November

At this time you may feel out of your element or out of sync with yourself or your surroundings. Interference from others requires adjustment and perhaps sacrifice on your part. What you have to offer or want to do doesn't mesh well with what seems to be necessary. While not a full blown crisis, it is a time of strain and tension, which can be somewhat debilitating to your health.

Fateful encounters which are not altogether pleasant are indicated. If you are in an established intimate relationship, it is apt to be rough sailing right now. Ultimatums, bringing up past pain and unresolved issues, jealousy, or unusual neediness or possessiveness may all be part of the scenario, and what makes all of this quite stressful is that most of it is not blatant but subtle and insidious. T-BONE WITH MUSTARD AND SUN-DRIED TOMATO BUTTER Ingredients: • T-bone steaks (make sure they are thick cut with a healthy portion of meat on the fillet side) • beef braai marinade of your choice • braai spice of your choice • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

FLAVOURED BUTTER: • store- bought garlic butter, softened • 1 Tbs • grainy mustard • 3 sun-dried tomatoes, finely chopped

Method: Cover the steaks with marinade and refrigerate for 2-3 hours. Make sure all the steaks are well covered. A re-sealable zip-loc bag works best for this. Just add all the steaks and marinade and shake well. Braai the steak over very hot coals, about 3-4 minutes a side, turning only once. Season with braai spice as you go along. Remove from the heat. Top with a dollop of flavoured butter and enjoy the flavours melting into your steak. Flavoured butter: Combine the ingredients to form a paste. Refrigerate until needed. X1PLUYGW-GZ230115

) As jy jou resolusies verbreek, probeer weer.
