Moenie ons skole sluit nie Ouers en leerlinge van LK Zeeman Primêr en Bergrivier Primêr het Dinsdag by die Onderwys Distrikskantoor met hul plakkate ’n optog gehou. Dié skole teken protes aan weens die feit dat die Wes-Kaapse departement van onderwys besluit het om hierdie skole volgende maand te sluit en hul leerlinge saam te smelt met ander skole in die gebied. Hierdie besluit is volgens die departement geneem as gevolg van ’n vermindering in leerlinggetalle en ’n afname in geletterdheid en gesyferdheid. Mama Afrika in Mbekweni LIEZL DAVIDS The love and passion she has for her job can easily be seen in her smile and her warm personality. Mirriam Toni from Mbekweni, also known as Mama Afrika, gives hope and a sense of belonging to a lot of residents in her area. Mirriam started her centre in the early 1990s and cares for children and adults. As a former abused child herself, she loves and nurtures children who have suffered the same fate. She provides a place of safety for the children and ensures that they are fed properly. Last year her informal home, from where she was running her safehouse, burned down, but with the help of donors, a double-storey house was built for her and the children. Two years ago she was nominated as one of 36 Clover Mamas in South Africa. The Clover Mama Afrika project identifies women who are already making a difference in their communities and helps them to become selfsustaining with skills they can derive incomes from, in order to support orphaned and abused children and the elderly. She, along with the other mamas, were trained in cooking and baking, sewing, gardening, quilting, flower arrangements, crocheting, beadwork, artwork, first aid and she did a basic finance management course. “They also gave me two sewing machines and an overlocker to teach other women how to make clothes.” Mirriam not only teaches women, but also young girls and even a few

The baked goods are then sold. “We now get orders to bake muffins and bread and some of the boys help us carry the heavy pans.” Sometimes they start baking as early as 03:00 in the morning to get the order ready in time. Mirriam said she is happy to now pass on the skills she has learned in order to help empower others and uplift the community. “Some mamas don't have jobs and now they can at least put something on the table for their children by creating this job for them.” “I try to stop mamas from begging on the street corners. There are other mama Mirriams in our community. I don't want them to underestimate themselves, they must walk tall, make a difference and know who they are.

Carols by candlelight Head to Laborie Wine Farm on Friday 7 December for their annual Carols by Candlelight. She and her team of seven women also visit the elderly at their homes, where they cook and clean for them and try to give them something special. “Sometimes you just need to make someone feel special and spoil them a bit.” Mirriam also started a soccer club, the All Stars, to keep children off the street. “The teams do very well, they even play against clubs in Cape Town. When we have to travel we bake and sell muffins to raise money for travelling expenses.” When Mirriam’s home burnt down, they also lost the players football kit and are in dire need of new football clothes and boots for the players. Her wish is to have a bigger venue from where she can run all the different courses she was taught, and in this way, empower more people.

Student Expo The inaugural Student Expo aimed at taking tertiary education further and building a brighter South Africa takes place on Sunday 25 November at the Cape Town ICC. The Expo is aimed at high school and university students and graduates. The concept was initially created with accommodation shortage for students in mind but has since grown into a unique resourceful exhibition where students will find tons of information, have an opportunity to network and listen to some extremely motivational speakers. School leavers will have the opportunity to meet estate agents and secure accommodation, seek career advice, meet representatives from potential universities,
gather information on various courses and get a better understanding of university life including facilities, social aspect and sporting clubs. Graduates can explore opportunities both locally and internationally, meet recruiting companies and learn more about different industries and careers, develop CV’s and interview skills. You will also be able to find out about student loans, bank accounts. Well-known deans, businessmen and celebrities will speak at the expo. Students will each receive a free entry ticket into the Tiger Tiger after party and U4U rage card holders only pay R20 entrance, for others it will be R50. Paarl keep hopes alive Paarl’s first XI went down by 2 wickets against Young People’s at the Parys Grounds on Saturday, but redeemed themselves with a convincing 61-run win over Robertson on Sunday to keep its hopes alive in the league competition.
STAR PERFORMANCE: The Drakenstein Basketball League All Stars team defeated the Drakenstein Correctional Services team from the Medium A section last Sunday by 52-51 in a double overtime match at the prison. The All Star team is made up of the best high school players from the Drakenstein league. They also defeated the DCS Juvenile “Dream Team” by a score of 38-2 the previous week. With eight regular players not available, a depleted Paarl team performed admirably against the log leaders on Saturday, setting a target of 175 in the 50 over match. Boland batsman Godfrey Stevens (63) was the chief contributor, hitting six boundaries off 120 balls. Sent in to bat, Paarl was in early trouble after the dismissal of openers Darryl Hendricks (29) and Robyn Andrews, but a patient 4th-wicket partnership of 75 runs in 161 balls between Stevens and Byron Walters (27)

Young People’s were given a good run for their money thanks to the determined efforts of debutant Enrico Dampies (3/17), who bowled with enthusiasm. Paarl were back at full strength against Robertson on Sunday and posted 196 thanks to Robyn Andrews (82), who hit nine boundaries. Godfrey Stevens chipped in with 38 and was involved in a match saving 2nd-wicket partnership of 99 runs with Andrews before falling to Marney Beukman (4/29), the most
impressive visiting seamer. Warwick Abrahim (3/35) was the other seamer who caught the eye. Robertson started off briskly and was well on track for a victory until the batting powerplay started. Hilroy Paulse (4/17) and Rabian Engelbrecht uprooted the stumps at will during their final spells, after captain Lynal Jansen (2/22) and Andrews (2/17) had demonstrated their all-round ability. Robertson reached 135 thanks to the efforts of Ysiri Abrahim (36) and cousin Warwick Abrahim (21). The league competition continues this weekend. Paarl will be travelling to Pniel to play Coronation CC on Saturday and host Easterns from Kraaifontein on Sunday. On Saturday Paarl II meets Berg River in Wellington while Paarl III travels to Klapmuts.
Join the night race at the Taalmonument The Afrikaans op ’n drafstap Night Race, held in collaboration with the Afrikaanse Taalraad (ATR) and Paarl Athletics Club, takes place at the Afrikaanse Taalmonument in Paarl on Wednesday 12 December. The race is held in aid of Andrew Murray Child and Youth Care Centre in Wellington.
