Robbed in broad daylight In separate incidents, two foreigners in Mbekweni were attacked by armed men.

According to information received, Awees Mohamed Muur (33), a Somalian was climbing out of his bakkie in front of a spaza shop in MQ block, when he was suddenly approached by two men. They threatened him with a firearm and robbed him of R1 500 and five cartons of Peter Stuyvesant cigarettes, valued at

R1 300, which was in the vehicle. No shots were fired and the victim was not injured.

The suspects fled the scene. A case of armed robbery was opened, but suspects have not yet been arrested.

The same day, at about 15:55, the police was called to attend to a robbery complaint in Phola Park Mbekweni. According to Yosef Adinew Kemisa (27), an Ethiopian shop owner, three unknown men entered his shop, one with a

firearm and the other with a crowbar. One suspect pointed a firearm at him, while the other man forced open a security gate with the crowbar.

Kemisa was then hit on the head with the crowbar. He called for help and the suspects ran away empty-handed. No shots were fired.

A case of business robbery was opened. Anyone with information can call Mbekweni detectives at 021 868 9926.

Local chicken is lekker!

Locally produced chicken has come out tops in a chicken tasting survey conducted by the South African Poultry Association (Sapa), settling a claim that local poultry was of lesser quality than overseas imports.

The results of the chicken tasting survey, held in Cosmo City and Parktown North in Johannesburg this week, showed that the majority of people preferred locally produced chicken to imports from Brazil and Holland.

In recent weeks, claims have been made around the quality of local meat, with suggestions made that locally produced meat was of inferior quality. Sapa, which looks after the interests of the local poultry industry, disputed this.

To find out whether South African consumers preferred local chicken, Sapa conducted a “blind tasting” chicken survey at the Youth Centre in Cosmo City and The Local Grill in Parktown North, owned by restaurateur Steven Maresch. About 50

Local is lekker! consumers participated in the Cosmo City survey, with 12 people sitting down to taste in Parktown North, including journalists from The Sunday Times, Your Family, True Love, Farmers Weekly, Caxton community newspapers, two professional chefs and a qualified hospital

dietician.

Consumers had to rate the taste of the chicken pieces in a questionnaire Sapa created with the assistance of an auditing firm, Binder Dijker Otte.

The audited results showed that 22 participants at the Cosmo City venue preferred SA produced chicken thighs compared to 16 who liked the imports, while 33 chose local drumsticks over the 13 who preferred the imports.

“The results clearly show that assertions that our product is of inferior quality is absolute rubbish,” says Sapa senior executive, broiler liaison, Sol Motsepe. “Local consumers, including journalists, know what they like and only buy what they prefer. And in this case, clearly local is lekker.”

According to Motsepe the industry was awaiting the decision by Minister Rob Davies to review the tariffs that Sapa have applied for through International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa. The final decision on this issue is expected by mid-August.

Keep a diary, or get to work ten minutes early so you can sit in the car and prepare for the day. I found that hypnotherapy really helped me figure out why I viewed food and a healthy lifestyle the way I did and replace the incorrect thinking with a better attitude.

• Don’t stop eating I’d like to replace the normal rhyme of an apple a day with this: An Apple a Day is great if it is replacing an unhealthy snack. Watch what you’re eating. If you just read “Be hungry”, I want you to go back and read it again.

If you’re hungry – eat! But eat the right stuff.

• Get lots of sleep I know you like to make the most of your weekend or day off, but re-

Make sure you are getting enough rest as you are far more likely to crave sugar and miss your work-out if you are tired. You need at least 6–8 hours of sleep at night and add a nap over the weekend if you have a stressful lifestyle.

• Keep accountable It’s much harder to load up on treats at your monthly shop if you know you’ll have to tell someone about it the next day. Start a WhatsApp group with a few friends or commit to telling your partner when you eat unhealthy or skip your work-out for more than two days. If you’d like to be a bit more removed from the person, book a few sessions with a life coach.

• Take your vitamins There is a definite correlation between lacking vitamins and trying to replace them by eating more food. Extra vitamins in winter will have the added benefit of fighting off colds and ensuring a healthy skin. Find a nutritionist in your area to make sure you’re taking the right vitamins for your lifestyle.

Of course, the best thing would be to do all these things on a consistent basis. If change scares you, try making just one change and only add another when you’ve got that one waxed.

Method: Place a large frying pan over a medium heat. Place the chicken breasts between two sheets of cling-wrap and thin out with a rolling pin or mallet. Combine the breadcrumbs with the cheese, salt and paprika. Place this in a shallow, wide bowl. Place the beaten eggs in a similar bowl (big enough to dunk the chicken into). To coat the chicken, dunk it first into the egg mixture and then place into the crumbs, coating the chicken well and patting down the crumbs. Place the chicken in the frying pan and allow to fry for 2 minutes per side until the crumbs are crispy and the chicken is cooked through but still moist. Serve hot with a fresh salad or roasted vegetables.

’n Liedjie opgedra aan Madiba Twee maande gelede het Theodore Loggenberg van Groenheuwel sy liedjie wat hy opgedra het aan oudpres. Nelson Mandela voltooi en dit kan nou op die radio gehoor word.

Loggenberg wat altyd graag iets vir Mandela wou doen, het die liedjie genaamd Something for you, self geskryf en hy voer dit ook self op. “Ek het die eer gehad om op Madiba se verjaardag my liedjie aan hom te sing tydens ’n geleent-

heid in Mbekweni.”

Hy vertel dat sedert sy liedjie op Radio KC uitgesaai word, hy nog net positiewe terugvoering van die publiek ontvang het.

Volgens Loggenberg beplan hy om binnekort ’n CD amptelik bekend te stel.

Hy wil ook net almal wat hom tot dusver bemoedig en bygestaan het, bedank vir hul ondersteuning.

INAUGURATION: After 113 years of the National Baptist existence on African soil, on 13 July 2013, Rev Vuyaini Victor Mtini (left) was inaugurated as the first Bishop of the National Baptist Church of Southern Africa. The ceremony was conducted by the well known Bishops from Gauteng and the Western Cape. Reverend Mtini started his priesthood 32 years ago in the dusty township of Mbekweni, Paarl. He therefore preferred to start his new journey as Bishop by hosting his consecration in Mbekweni. Rev Mtini, commitmed to the well-being of all people, especially the most disadvantaged in our society, has served the community of Guguletu and the nearby communities since 1991.

Not a good weekend for Paarl hockey After a three week break, the second half of the season was not a good start for Paarl hockey.

The ladies played against Somerset West and after dominating most of the game and creating lots of opportunities, the ladies of Paarl just could not capitalize, and at half time the score was 0-0.

Somerset West scored early in the second half from a play-off of a penalty corner. At the end Somerset West proved to be the better of the two teams and secured a 1-0 victory over Paarl.

The men’s second team also fell short of victory with their match against the Kuils River based team, White Stripes. It was a very evenly posed game with both teams setting the pace of the game. At half time the score was 0-0.

Early in the second half White Stripes scored their first goal after a controversial decision by one of the umpires. Paarl then struggled to gain composure and their game plan fell apart. Twenty minutes before game time, White Stripes scored their second goal, clinching the match 2-0.

The men’s first team fell against

Van der Stel in their M3 league game at Stellenbosch with a 3-1 victory for Van Der Stel. At half time the score was 2-0 in favour of Van der Stel.

With the start of the second half, Paarl took one back with great ball possession, but Van der Stel was simply the better team. Final score for Van der Stel was 3-1.
