Pursue a future in agriculture.
New farming academy offers full bursaries
A newly launched Agro Ecology Academy based in Stellenbosch seeks to increase the sustainability of local food systems while addressing the youth unemployment crisis. On offer is a rare opportunity for school-leavers without a matric, to gain a nationally recognised qualification leading on to a life-long career with opportunities for growth. Organic Farming is a growing field in South Africa with recent research showing that demand far outstrips supply in South Africa. Eric Swarts, a local organic farmer and land reform beneficiary who has been farming on the Annandale Road near Stellenbosch for the last 12 years, confirms this: “At the moment I have more people wanting my produce than I can possibly supply.” At the same time the Winelands region is battling with high levels of youth unemployment, which in turn leads to many other social problems. Luke Metelerkamp, a researcher at the Sustainability Institute says: “Nationally youth unemployment sits at around 60%. But, statistically, a young adult with some form of tertiary qualification is six times less likely to be unemployed than one without matric. This highlights the need to train young people in areas where there is a skills shortage. “Our vision for this programme
is to create a supportive environment in which youth, who would otherwise battle to find any form of meaningful employment, can embark on a skills development journey. This not only sets them on a meaningful career path but also helps to make agriculture and the wider food system more sustainable in the long run. It’s about creating livelihoods with real purpose – qualifying people to help solve the problem of providing safe, nutritious food to all South Africans.” This fully funded, nationally recognised course will help graduates find a job in farming or start their own business. Courses on offer: NQF Level 1: Mixed Farming Systems This covers a basic introduction to agroecological/organic farming with a mix of practical work with Niel Graham in the Sustainability Institute’s food gardens and with Eric Swart’s farm adjoining Spier. Students will learn about basic farming skills around soil management, plant preparation and irrigation, as well as basic numeracy and literacy, and basic financial management skills. Students will also participate in outings to different parts of the Western Cape. NQF Level 4: Farming Management Qualification Over this three year course students will learn more advanced farming skills and are taught how
to combine these with basic business management skills to farm more autonomously. They will have the opportunity to take on a section of land to manage for their own profit growing food for a client, and will be guided to mentor younger students. On successful completion, this course can lead into employment with course partners in organic farming, animal breeding, viticulture, dairy or chicken farming. Full bursaries for successful applications cover: ) All course fees and equipment ) Accommodation at a student house at Lynedoch ) Meals 5 days a week ) Transport allowance for weekends ) Travel and field visits Students will be based Monday to Friday at Lynedoch Ecovillage near Stellenbosch, which is a vibrant learning campus. These courses are for people aged 18-30 with a minimum of Grade 9 and no matric is required. Applicants will have a passion for food and their future, an interest in farming, and a willingness to work with their hands. Applications close April 8 and spaces are very limited. For applications, visit Terrence Ward in person at the Youth Office, the Sustainability Institute, Lynedoch, email terrence@sustainabilityinstitute.net or call 021 881 3196 ext 208, 079 137 6963.

Star Star Signs Signs CAPRICORN
22 December to 21 January
You have an abundance of physical energy and selfconfidence right now and can take on new projects and challenges with ease. You feel bolder and less dependent on others' affirmation and approval. Taking a strong stand or striking out on your own in some manner is likely to work out well for you.
AQUARIUS
This is not a period when you feel like pushing your own interests or one in which you are especially energetic. Other people's concerns and needs receive more attention from you now, and you are more motivated to do something which serves others, perhaps a group you are affiliated with. Cooperating with others for some idealistic purpose is very satisfying for you at this time.
PISCES
20 February to 21 March
You are likely to come up with a clever solution or a very workable plan, especially if you brainstorm with others. You also tend to make up your mind very quickly and decisively now and to translate your ideas into action. You can't stand being idle now; you are ready for challenging, intellectual activities and attacking difficult problems on the job.
ARIES
21 March to 21 April
This is a good time to travel, especially to places you've never experienced before, where you will be exposed to new ideas and different ways of looking at the world. Studying new concepts is also favored; your ability to understand abstract ideas and your desire to grow intellectually is strong now.
TAURUS
21 April to 21 May
You seesaw between caution and impatience, which generates a great deal of stress and inner anguish. You may blame your feelings of oppression and barely contained hostility on an unjust situation, a corrupt society, or your childhood conditioning (any or all of which may be valid) but it is your choices and your own internal struggles which are the real issue at present.
GEMINI
21 May to 22 June
A fast pace, with many letters, phone calls, errands, meetings, or discussions, is on the agenda. You may feel mentally restless, impatient, and overly eager to get your own ideas across. Also, a situation may arise which requires you to say what is on your mind, to make a decision, or to clearly voice your personal opinion on some issue.
CANCER
22 June to 23 July
Your amorous feelings and passions are strong and compelling at this time, and you tend to be very demanding of a lover's energy and affection. Tensions may erupt in close relationships because one of you feels that you have been giving more and not receiving enough in return, or one of you is more amorous than the other.
LEO
23 Julie to 24 August
You are fascinated by the mysterious now. Unsolved or puzzling problems and the hidden or behind the scenes aspects of a situation interest you most, and you delve and probe until you discover the truth. An interest in psychology or other peoples' secrets comes to the fore. You enjoy spy, mystery, and supernatural stories.
VIRGO
24 August to 23 September
Your choices and decisions may lack prudence, realism, or sound judgment right now. Be wary of overly optimistic plans which are presented to you, signing contracts without doing thorough background work or reading the fine print, or promising something which will be difficult for you to fulfill. Questions of honor, ethics, law, or morality arise in your mind at this time.
LIBRA
23 September to 23 October
Don't just sit and wait for your ship to come in. You may hear about opportunities and possibilities at this time and wonder whether you should take the time to look into them. Don't overlook any opportunity that comes your way now because at this time it is more likely to prove worthwhile that at most other times.
SCORPIO
23 October to 23 November
You are very congenial and cooperative now and more interested in the similarities than in the differences between yourself and others. This is a very good time to let people know you care about them: send a card, write a note of appreciation or even a love letter! You may also want to buy something beautiful, pleasing, and frivolous which simply makes you feel good.
SAGITTARIUS

21 January To 20 February
23 November to 22 December
Your needs for love, companionship, friendship, and sharing are very strong now, and you won't want to be alone or go off to do solitary work. In fact, you feel like relaxing and enjoying the beautiful side of life rather than laboring or concentrating on difficult tasks. X1PX880R-GZ030415
You the entrepreneur: Spotting Apply for arts funds business opportunities DAVID MALHERBE Many people say “I would love to start my own business, but I do not know what kind of business to do.” There are different ways to look into the matter, but some guidelines may just help you to move in the right direction. Sometimes it is worthwhile to look for kinds of work that most people are reluctant to do, and you can do business by offering that service. Because people do not like to do it, they are usually willing to pay somebody else to do it for them, for example cleaning services or removing garden refuse. One can also look at the quality of products or services. Say you look at washing pegs and you know that you have the skill to produce better quality pegs than the ones available, it means the possibility for a business exists. Or you are not satisfied with the service you receive from your garden services company and you know you can do a better job. Or be on the lookout for a specific problem or need for which many people do not really have a solution. Maybe they have a
need for transport to the airport or to have electric equipment repaired, like hair dryers, washing machines, etc. If you have the ability or skills to supply the need, it may become your business. One of the most important aspects though to consider, is whether your business will match your personality and whether you have adequate skills and experience to supply quality products and / or service in the particular kind of business. It will not work to start a food-related business like baking or catering if you hate the idea of working in a kitchen. Similarly, do not consider building cupboards if you are not at all practical. Second to personality and skill, is to consider whether there is a market and a need for what you would like to offer or produce. There must be a need for large enough quantities of your product or service at a reasonable profit to make for a viable business. * David Malherbe is a business and career consultant and lives in Wellington. Waterwise Academy is ’n liefdadigheidsorganisasie en hou gratis werksessies by skole. FOTO: DEVIDEAN MOSES
