Schools showcase their talent at arts festival TWO schools in Drakenstein, Ihlumelo Secondary and Weltevrede Secondary have qualified to showcase their talent in the arts festival for schools at Artscape from 13 to 28 August at 19:00. This year a record number of 114 schools entered which means that nearly 3 000 learners are sharing the stage. On average the audience can look forward to 12 performances per evening. Any performing art genre, with the exception of drama is catered for in the festival. Choirs, dancers, musicians, speech and verse may be presented in ensemble or solo pieces, which should be less than ten minutes long. Visual art created by learners, such as drawings, paintings, sculpture and crafts
will be exhibited. A selection panel will select the 15 most promising schools to perform at the Gala Concert on 30 August at 19:00. Running concurrently with the Schools’ Arts Festival is the Artscape High School Drama Festival. Young drama enthusiasts will perform original works from 13 to 16 August at 18:00 in the Artscape Arena. The three top productions will be staged at a Gala Concert on Saturday 18 August at 09:00. Breastfeeding support group LA LECHE LEAGUE in Paarl, a non-profit, non-sectarian volunteer service organisation, helps mothers to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding. Their support group gets together every first Tuesday of the month at 10:00 at the NGK Paarlberg where they discuss different topics concerning breastfeeding mothers and their babies. MANDELA DAY. On 18 July, South Africans rolled up their sleeves to celebrate Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s 94th birthday by doing 67 minutes of community service. Staff of Perdeberg Winery divided themselves amongst three rural nursery schools and showered them with gifts and storytelling. The schools that benefitted from the visit were Vryguns, Zwartfontein and Feetjieland nursery schools. The kids wrote messages and drew pictures for Madiba whilst Perdeberg staff members handed each child a blanket and a packet of sweets. They also handed over plastic tables and chairs, mattresses, toys, mats and scooters to the schools.

VERDEDIG. Dinsdagmiddag het die interskole reeds vir die laerskoolseuns begin toe die o.13A-hokkie mekaar aangevat het. Hier is Klein Boishaai se kaptein Christian van der Wath besig om die bal terug te wen terwyl Gimnasium se Francois Marais probeer inhaal.
