Paul Steyn bly passievol “Ek het ’n passie vir mense”.
A Peace Walk was held in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village on Saturday 28 March. The walk, initiated by the Kingdom Builders Ministries International congregation, was aimed at ridding the community of gangsterism and to regain peace in the community, after a recent spate of violence that ended in two fatal shootings.
WATER SUPPLY DISRUPTION: FIRGROVE

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department will be completing a zero pressure test on the water supply zone in Firgrove on Tuesday 14 April 2015. This process will result in the disruption of the water supply to Firgrove from 22:00 until 04:00 the following morning. Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure minimal disruption to the water supply in the affected area. The water supply network across the City is divided into reticulation zones which are smaller and much more manageable sections of the large network for purposes of maintenance and upgrades. This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Plan and will significantly reduce the occurrence of pipe bursts and the subsequent water losses. Residents are advised to store water in clean sealed containers for domestic use during this period. The City regrets any inconvenience caused. ACHMAT EBRAHIM CITY MANAGER 84/2015

Steyn het egter nie toegelaat dat dit hom onderkry nie. Hy het soos voorheen met sy lewe aan gegaan en ná skool by Boland Kollege op Worcester gaan studeer. Dis hier dat hy besef het dat hy dit geniet om met mense te werk en die gemeenskap te help waar hy kan. “Ek het gesien hoe moeilik dit vir mense is wat nie geld het om ’n prostese te bekostig nie. Ek het besef dat ek iets daaromtrent kan doen”, vertel hy. Sedertdien het Steyn talle lang afstand staptogte aangepak om geld in te samel. In 2012 het Steyn besluit om sy organisasie, die Paul Steyn Foundation te begin. Hy het tot op hede reeds agt persone gehelp om ’n prostese te bekom. “Prostese is baie duur en dit vat tyd om die geld in te samel. ’n Paar individue en maatskappye in die Helderberg skenk gereeld geld en ek is ewig dankbaar daarvoor”, sê Steyn. Sy organisasie fokus nie net op Suid Afrika nie, maar ook op buurlande. “Selfs mense uit Noord-Afrika kontak ons en ek wens ek kon almal help”, sê hy. Volgens Paul gaan die kandidate deur ’n keuringsproses. “Ons kyk na die persoon se omstandighede en hoe groot ’n verskil die prostese in die persoon se lewe kan maak. En natuurlik kry kinders voorkeur”, vertel Steyn met passie. Steyn is ’n natuur- en geskiedenisliefhebber en geniet vreeslik die besoeke aan klein dorpies langs sy staproetes. Hy en sy span het by die Lotto-fonds vir

In Stilfontein sal ek ’n prostese aan ’n blinde jong vrou oorhandig”, sê hy. Hy is lief vir die lewe en dit wat hy doen. “Die lewe is baie mooi en staan nie stil nie – ’n mens moet dit lewe”, sê hy. Eric Bakus: I really have no qualms with state hospitals or clinics. I do however think there should be more facilities to accommodate people. Also, the staff working at these places should work on their attitude towards patients. That makes visits to hospitals and clinics unpleasant.

Sylvester says sewage had also recently flooded the area, leaving an unbearable stench. Another resident said his wife no longer collects their mail as the area is deserted and unsafe. According to Dreyer he informed the post office of the planned demolition about three years ago when they started negotiations for the new development. However, Gilchrist says no notification of the demolition has been received. According to Gilchrist a meeting was held with the management of the Shell service station, but a date for the relocation of the postal services still needs to be confirmed.

Businesses compete on bowling green
Gordon’s Bay Bowling Club held a very successful Business Bowls League recently in which 28 local businesses participated. The intense four-week tournament culminated with a prize giving and braai at the club last month. The team from GBAY Wireless Internet Networks were the overall winners of the event. The happy winners, seen here with the winners shield are (from left) Luca Boshoff, Warren Lewis and Matt Sansom.

Strand Athletes shine for Western Province Athletics Several athletes from the Strand Athletics Club excelled at Western Province Athletics (WPA) events recently. Ursula Turck, Gerhard Eckley and Wilna Eybers notched up several podium finishes at WPA events and represented WP at specific athletic disciplines during 2014. They were all rewarded for their sterling efforts by being awarded Elite WPA numbers. Ursula Turck finished first in several marathons and also represented WP at the SA Marathon championship. She was also the third veteran woman at last year’s Comrades Marathon. Gerhard Eckley achieved several top placed finishes in speed walking for boys u.13 and u.15 and also represented WP at the South
African School Championships during 2014 and 2015. Wilna Eybers chalked up several wins in WPA cross country events and 10 km races. She also represented WP at the SA Cross Country champs in 2014 and in 10 km races this year. Another well-known Strand Athletics Club athlete, Aldrin Smit (who is Ursula Turck’s brother) competed at the WP Masters Championship recently and received one silver and four gold medals. The gold medals were for the 10 000 m, 5 000 m, 3000 m steeple chase and the triple jump. He received silver for the long jump. Aldrin’s time in the 10 000 m and the distance he achieved in the long jump were Western Province qualifying times and distances.
