LOVE IS BLOOMING: Cupid’s drawing his bow and love is in the air as lovebirds gear up to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Nadia de Klerk and Trudy Snyders of the Functions Flowers florist in Somerset West are getting ready for the annual rush of lovebirds on Saturday 14 February. The florist has already had a steady flow of orders from hotels and restaurants, and despite the usual increase for the Valentine’s Day celebrations, clients are happy to pay any price for love.

Shanice Miles is naturally musical. She sings, plays the recorder and is learning to play the violin.

She is a shy, yet confident young woman with a zest for life. PHOTOS: TAMSYN JANTJIES

Shanice conquers Germany TAMSYN JANTJIES A local songbird has showcased her amazing voice and talents on the international stage. Strand resident Shanice Miles travelled to Germany as part of the Cape Town Children’s Choir in December. Kids for Africa invited the local choir to perform in four concerts in aid of the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Shanice has been singing since the tender age of nine and lends her voice to both the children’s and adult choirs at Strand Gustrow New Apostolic Church. And the musical 14-year-old also plays instruments. “I’ve been playing the recorder for some time now,” she says while sitting on a single-seater in her parents’ lounge. ‘‘This year, I am going to start playing the

violin. In fact, I have already started with it.’’ One of four daughters, she just started Grade 9 at Strand Secondary School. Shanice may not be a tall girl, but her size doesn’t hamper the size of her personality and dreams, or weight of her presence in the lounge. “I love singing, but when I matriculate, I want to study tourism; I love travelling. I want to explore and learn more about as many places and people as I can,” she says. “I just love learning about and experiencing new cultures.” Shanice was a member of the Cape Town Children’s Choir for four years; last year was her last year as part of the prestigious choir. The choir spent two weeks travelling, performing and raising funds in Germany. “I couldn’t have asked for a better ending to this journey,” Shanice concludes. The choir raised R1,2m for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital during the trip.

City offers skills training for unemployed youth Jobseekers in the Helderberg can apply to participate in the City of Cape Town’s skills development programme, which will run from March to June. The programme is run in partnership with Learn to Earn, a skills development organisation which works with unemployed people from social and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. It forms part of the City’s efforts to eradicate unemployment and create job opportunities. The programme aims to empower unemployed people, aged of 18 to 35, to become economically active and to provide for themselves and their families through training

Ek is wel betrokke by so ’n organisasie.

programmes. The City’s Economic Development department has contributed R1 026 000 across the city towards this programme. In total, 35 residents in the Helderberg will be trained in job readiness and personal finance. Those who successfully complete the programme will then be trained in a market-related skill – either home and hospitality management, retail point-of-sale or barista skills. Suitable graduates will then be provided with links to economic opportunities. Interested parties can apply by SMSing their details to 082 361 6950. Applications will close at the end of February.

Samantha van der Merwe: I used to be a member of a community charity organisation but left when I found out that the money being raised just went missing. At the moment, I’m not aware of any other similar projects in the Helderberg. I’d definitely like to get involved with some community projects again.

Antony Mapfurire: I really am not aware of any NPO in the area. I would love to be a part of something, if I just knew about it.

Mens hoor weinig mense praat daarvan. Ek is wel betrokke by ’n liefdadigheidsorganisasie.

Thieves caught in the act JAMEY GORDON

A Croydon, Faure resident appeals to other Helderberg residents to be vigilant and keep a watchful eye out for suspicious looking people on the streets. This follows after he caught three men trying to steal a 19th century horse cart on display in his garden on Sunday 4 February. Trevor Perrins (55), owner of Perrins Upholstery, says the incident occurred at about 23:45. When letting their three dogs inside, he heard a vehicle idling outside in the street. On inspection, he found a dark blue 1400 Nissan bakkie with a CA registration number in the street. Two men and a young boy, who he estimates to be 12 years old, were trying to get the horse cart through an opening they made in his wire fence. “I was dumbstruck. At that moment I heard one of the men telling another: ‘Kom trek die ding, jou vark.’ I immediately responded

by yelling ‘Los my goed, jou vark’.” As the men sped off, Perrins phoned his neighbours and six of them jumped into his Volkswagen Caddy and gave chase. Driving through Macassar, they spotted the bakkie with a white trailer hooked onto its rear in Link Avenue. Perrins says the men immediately made off when they saw him. “We eventually cornered them in the street between the school and the library. We thought they would stop, but the driver of the bakkie rammed the vehicle into mine,” says Perrins, who quickly assessed the damage and reported the incident to Macassar police, rather than allowing the situation to get out of hand. Macassar police station commander Lieutenant-Colonel Sindile Mbese confirms officers have viisted Perrins’ home, while he was also interviews at the station. “The case is still under investigation and progress will be reported to the complainant,” he concludes.

Careful on back of bakkies Recent statistics have shown that more than 20 people have died, and more than 50 people have been injured while being transported on the back of bakkies and trucks in the province. The statistics were drawn up from accident scenes attended to by ER24 in the last six weeks. An ER24 press release urges motorists and passengers to be more careful when transporting people on the back of bakkies and trucks. Mayoral Committee member for Safety and Security JP Smith says fines may be issued in certain instances, while passengers may be

Useful fire safety tips

Fires are a frequent occurrence in Cape Town, particularly during the hot, windy summer months.

Therefore, the City of Cape Town is constantly seeking to create awareness around fire safety, frequently embarking on drives to educate communities on preventative measures which will reduce the risk and number of fires. The City is reaching out to communities and appealing to residents to work with them to bring an end to preventable fires and the unnecessary loss of life and property. Residents can do this by taking note of the following fire safety tips: . Keep a close eye on paraffin stoves. Don’t cook near a window with a curtain. . Make sure the stove doesn’t fall over, as it may burn children or cause a fire. . Make sure candles are secure and cannot fall over. Do not go to sleep while the candles

are still burning. . Teach children about the dangers of fire. . Dispose of cigarette butts safely. . Be aware of the dangers of illegal and faulty electricity connections, which can cause fires. . Keep a bucket handy to fill with water to extinguish flames quickly. . Keep a bucket of sand nearby to put out paraffin fires. . Build dwellings a good distance (at least 3 m) apart to prevent fires from spreading. Make sure this space is kept open. . Keep roads and access to dwellings clear at all times. . Do not block roads with possessions when there is a fire. . Do not prevent or disrupt the work of crews fighting fires. To report a fire or any other emergency, phone 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.

BOWLS MEETS FAST-PACED SEVENS: The members of the Somerset West Bowls Club were recently honoured with a visit by the South African Rugby Sevens squad prior to their departure to New Zealand for the IRB Wellington Sevens tournament. Their visit was also to honour their commitment to the SA Bowls team, who will be participating in the Commonwealth Games. After an intensive three-minute coaching session by Pete Sneller, Schalk Kotze and Theuna Grobler of the Somerset West Bowls Club and a couple of trial ends, they played a fun internal competition, where they demonstrated their competitive spirit. Afterwards, the sevens players admitted that the game of bowls was not as easy as it looked and said they would like to return to the club and give it another try. PHOTO: SCHALK KOTZE

HB Cricket Club continues to impress Helderberg Cricket Club has, since its humble beginnings, gone from strength to strength and is now an established club playing in the first division B league of Western Province. They are now the highest ranked playing cricket club in the Helderberg and the only cricket club in the area to have been selected as a Cricket Club of Excellence by Cricket South Africa. Prior to the existence of the Helderberg Cricket Club, cricket in the Somerset West area was played since 1925 by the following cricket

clubs: Pirates, All Saints, Oaks, Nelson and Cameron’s. In 1975 the clubs amalgamated to form Helderberg Cricket Club and in 1995 Garden Village Cricket Club amalgamated with Helderberg Cricket Club. The facilities belonged to the Hotspurs Rugby Football Club and the maintenance and preparations were maintained by the clubs, without the local municipality’s involvement. The communities of Somerset West played a big role in maintaining and improving the facilities for sport in the area.
