Joining forces to help others TAMSYN JANTJIES

The Helderberg Hub SA has gone from strength to strength since its launch last month.

DRUGS AND FIREARMS SEIZED: Strand police confiscated more than R400 000 worth of drugs and firearms in a bust of a tow trucking company in Smit Street, Strand on Saturday. Police spokesperson Constable Mbulelo Mafuna says police responded to a tip-off of drugs being stored on the premises at about 21:30.

They found 229 small bags of tik as well as 15 bigger bags, with a total value of R450 000; 502 madrax tablets worth R25 000; 126 different calibres of live rounds; three 9mm firearms and one 38 revolver. An electric scale, a Motorola radio and charger, as well as an undisclosed amount of money were also confiscated. Two men,aged 26 and 29, will appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court today (Tuesday) on charges of the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and possession of drugs. For Jo Swart, Sandy Immelman, Des Mcloed, Portia Motjuwadi, Gail Sykes and Lynette Pullen, the idea finally come into fruition after nearly a year of discussions and planning. These women pour their hearts into their charitable passions daily.

Besides being the steering committee and founders of the organisation, all the women are members of other NPOs, making it clear that they live purely to serve the well-being of others. Despite experiencing some difficulties with their website, hindering the process of other NGOs and companies who wish to register with them, the founding committee have still managed to triumph.

“This is not the rate that we had hoped to grow at, as our launch was so well attended, but we are hoping that once the website is populated we will see this pick up,” Immelman, from Masikhule and the Hub treasurer, explains.

At the launch event, Swart, who is also the chairperson of the Somerset West Night Shelter, said the gist of the project boils down to “people helping people’’.

Church groups have already made a donation of more than R4 000.

Companies and NPOs register with the Hub and pay an annual fee – NPOs who provide a service pay R300 and companies who wish to contribute to this cause pay a fee of R200.

According to the organisation’s mission statement, it aims to serve as a hub which will connect the community with service providers within the Helderberg and provide those

involved with tools to work together to enhance their services and coordinate effectiveness.

“It has been wonderful watching this embryo of an idea being nurtured and finally being born. Although it is fledging days as yet, the women behind this idea are determined to make a difference in our community and we all believe that the Hub will facilitate this. We ask the community to help us grow and to make this a powerful tool for those who need it most,”Immelman concludes.

Raak by skole betrokke “Onderwys is een van die kernpilare van ’n gemeenskap, en daarom is dit van absolute belang dat ouers moet besef hoe belangrik dit is dat hulle betrokke is by hul kind se skool.”

Só sê Seymour Bothman, senior bestuurder: onderwys by die ATKV. Bothman het ’n beroep op ouers gedoen om betrokke te raak by die verkiesing van skole se beheerliggame wat hierdie maand landswyd plaasvind.

“Beheerliggame tree as waghond op om leerderprestasie by skole te monitor en die belange van die gemeenskap te dien. Ongeveer 100 000 posisies by nagenoeg 25 000 skole moet gevul word, en die verkiesings is die ideale kans vir ouers om aktief betrokke te raak by skole.”

Voorts doen Bothman ’n beroep op alle ouers om gedurende die komende skoolbeheerliggaamverkiesings te gaan stem.

“Naas die twee nasionale, provinsiale en die plaaslike verkiesings, wat landswyd plaasvind, is dié verkiesing van beheerliggame die derde grootste verkiesing in SuidAfrika.”

Proposal to restrict tipple level to zero The national Department of Transport has tabled a proposal to reduce the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers to zero percent.

The Helderberg Gazette took to the streets to quiz readers on their take of the proposed law change and their thoughts on possible solutions to drunk driving.

MANAW SHETE: “A zero percent alcohol level could save many lives going forward, as well as money.

It’s as simple as making sure you have a designated driver when you do decide to drink and you still need to drive home. I also think there should be some kind of alcohol detectors in the car itself, so when a drunk person wants to drive, the car won’t move.”

Free film courses Film School South Africa is accepting applications for its courses in photography and acting for camera which starts in April.

Diegene wat op medikasie is wat spore van alkohol agterlaat, moet dan net ’n briefie van hul dokter ten alle tye saam met hulle dra.”

MORRIS VISAGIE: “Ek stem 100% saam met 0%. Die wet moet definitief toegepas word. Daar sal soveel minder lewensverlies wees, wat ’n goeie ding is. Baie dinge gebeur en loop skeef wanneer mense onder die invloed van alkohol is. Dis juis dan wanneer hulle hul fokus verloor en ongelukke maak.”

MEGAN CHOWLES: “In some cases it’s a very good idea to bring the legal alcohol level down to 0%, but what happens when someone uses medication? Will they be wrongfully fined or arrested? Aside from that hiccup, I’m all for the new law to be passed. People don’t realise that one glass can cost you and many others their lives.”

Volgens Katy Arendse, die stigter en bestuurder van die sopkombuis (heel links), het die bydrae ’n ete moontlik gemaak vir gestremdes aan die einde van verlede jaar. VLAMME VERSWELG ALS: Elf familielede, insluitend vier kinders tussen die ouderdom van twee en ses jaar oud, is verlede Dinsdag dakloos gelaat nadat ’n brand by ’n huis in Smartie Town, Macassar, uitgebreek het. Niemand is in die brand beseer nie. Volgens huiseienaar Maria van Rheede, het die brand net ná 18:00 by een van drie houthuise in die agterplaas uitgebreek.

Van der Rheede, wat gestremd is, sê dat sy en haar dogter en kleinkinders op die stoep van haar huis gesit het, en dat haar sesjarige kleindogter hulle oor die brand ingelig het. Al drie houthuise is in die brand verwoes, en haar huis aan die voorkant van die erf het ook erge brandskade opgedoen. Die gesin het al hul besittings verloor. ’n Wendyhuis op ’n aangrensende erf se slaapkamer het ook in die slag gebly. Hero Challenge kicks off at Somerset Lakes The exclusive Somerset West lifestyle estate, Somerset Lakes, will be hosting the inaugural race of The Lights By Linea Hero Challenge Summer Series on Saturday 14 March from 14:00 until 19:00.

The Hero Challenge has become one of the highlights on the SA road cycling calendar since its launch in 2013.

It is also the first in a series of seasonal sporting and leisure showcases, dubbed “Lake Living Events” to be hosted by Somerset Lakes this year.

The picturesque location provides breathtaking mountain vistas as well as views of the estate’s pristine private six-hectare lake and stone pine forest, promising an incredible kick off to the season. A fast, flat, technical and very scenic circuit has been laid out using the estate’s existing road infrastructure.

The Hero Challenge falls into a category of cycling known as “criterium road racing.”

Criterium racing is a fairly new concept to South African road racing and constitutes a multi-lap race on a closed circuit generally less than 5km in length. The circuit must be completed by the riders as many times as possible within the time specified for that category. Races are extremely fast as the cyclists jockey for position. hall on Thursday 5 March and ran a street soccer tournament for youth in the area. They plan to regularly run such tournaments to provide youths with an extra-mural activity to occupy them after school. The aim of these tournaments is to reach out to troubled youth and help them stay motivated to finish their schooling. After the tournament, Oasis volunteers also hosted a group talk with the youth.

dling ability are paramount and riders must be able to dive into tight corners at high speed, leaning the bike over at a gravity-defying angle, then power out of the turn and instantly set up for the next one.

Fitness requirements and tactics differ substantially to those of more conventional road races, being shorter, faster and more technical.

They also tend to be a lot more fun to watch due to the adrenaline-inducing tactics of seasoned professional riders. No wonder the Hero Challenge has become known as one of the most spectator friendly and exciting road racing events on the local calendar!

The timed races at Somerset Lakes are open to all categories of road cyclists wishing to participate and include professional, youth (u.16), ladies, masters, veteran and open categories, as well as a fun ride. It presents an excellent opportunity for aspiring riders to push themselves hard, and for more seasoned riders to get some great training in.

Registration for the event takes place on race day at Somerset Lakes and opens at 15:00, closing to entrants 30 minutes prior to their category start time. Timed racing commences at 16:15 and continues until 19:00 in three slots.

A marquee providing seating will be set up within the estate precincts. There will be refreshments for sale, but visitors are free to bring along their own drinks and snacks. In addition, interested parties can view the Somerset Lakes lifestyle estate’s new homes, and visit the sales office to learn more about estate product offerings.
