Geraldine het by ’n hele paar kleuterskole

navraag gedoen of hul grond sal beskikbaar stel vir so ’n projek. Good Hope Educare, my seun se skool, ingestem.
Geraldine en haar toegewyde span wil graag nog tuine by kleuterskole in Macassar begin.

Police seized ammunition at a Strand beachfront apartment on Wednesday 8 April. Strand police spokesperson Constable Mbulelo Mafuna says police assisted the Sheriff of the Court with an eviction. No arrests have been made. This is the second ammunition find in the Helderberg in a week. A day later, a 65-yearold Gordon’s Bay woman was arrested after police seized explosives and ammunition at a Burton Street house. Gordon’s Bay police spokesperson Constable Vicky Kriel says police acted on a tipoff from the community. The find included nine smoke grenades, four military-issue rocket flares, one twostar instant light grenade, 31 pencil plax cartridges, one 20mm live round and 95 5.56mm rounds. The police’s Explosive Unit identified the explosives as those used for military purposes. Kriel says the woman was released after questioning as she “could not be connected to the seized items”.

Preserving heritage: yay or nay? Street name changes and the removal of historic statues have made headlines over the last couple of months. Helderberg Gazette quizzed locals on their thoughts.
BONGANI TSHICILA believes change is good. “They to need start erecting statues of people who are relevant to us today; relevant to today’s youth. We must also know our history.”
JOSHUA ELS is of the opinion that the current situation, with regard to the renaming of streets and the removal or defacing of statues, will influence the leaders of the future. “It will have a greater impact on generations that are still to come, because they are going to grow up only knowing half of South Africa’s history.”
REAGAN THOMPSON doesn’t agree with the current state of the country. “The names and statues have been here for a long time. Some represent something less than positive. They, too, are part of our rainbow nation.”
LUDWE KLASS says the statues represent the evils of the past. “Apartheid statues should be removed to make space for those of freedom fighters. No one is dealing with the fact that apartheid is still relevant.”

Temporary relocation for group The Reach for Recovery organisation is spread worldwide and began in America in 1953, after founder Teresa Lasser was appalled at her post operative treatment. It is an autonomous, self-funded organisation run by well-selected and trained volunteers, the vast majority of whom are breast cancer survivors themselves. It was founded on the simple principle that a person who has experienced breast cancer voluntarily gives of their time and experience to assist newly diagnosed patients. Lasser visited South Africa in 1967 and the first group was found-
Reach for Recovery, the breast cancer support group in the Somerset West and Stellenbosch areas, is moving the venue for its support meetings this month.
MediClinic Vergelegen, where the group is currently situated, is about to undergo substantial refurbishment and rebuilding, which has necessitated the move of the meetings. The new venue, by permission of the management at MediClinic Vergelegen, is MediClinic Strand in Altena Road, Strand, which is governed by Vergelegen management.
ed in Johannesburg shortly thereafter. There are currently 25 active groups in the country, with the Somerset West/Stellenbosch branch started by Rita du Toit, with the assistance of Ingrid Rousseau from Paarl, in 2001. Rita, a survivor of 34 years, is still an active member of the organisation in Kleinmond, as is Ingrid in Paarl. Details of the group’s open meetings are available on the www.reach4recovery.org.za. The website also provides in depth details of the organisation. Monthly notices of the meetings, speakers and times also appear on this website.

The water supply network across the City is divided into reticulation zones which are smaller and much more manageable sections of the large network for purposes of maintenance and upgrades. This work forms part of the City’s Water Demand Management Plan and will significantly reduce the occurrence of pipe bursts and the subsequent water losses.
The City regrets any inconvenience caused.

Bringing fitness back to schools
SuperSport is launching a nationwide Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge to commemorate its 10th year.
The event targets 10- and 11-year-olds from the country’s 18 000 primary schools. The fittest primary school per province will compete for the title and the chance to win the grand prize of a R1,1m all-purpose, all-weather multi-use sport court, which will be built at the winning school. The nine provincial winners will each receive R10 000 worth of sports equipment and a physical education package worth R40 000. The primary objective of the challenge is to reinforce the instruction of curriculumoriented physical education and promote physical activity in schools. Let’s Play coaching teams from Active Education will target various schools per day to run the Physical Education Challenge. The fittest pupils per school will compete, after which the top 10 schools per province will qualify for the provincial semi-final, leading to an overall provincial winner. The final will take place on Let’s Play’s 10th birthday in November. The obstacle course challenge is designed to accommodate boys and girls, and will be standardised at every competing school. It includes football slalom dribble, catch and throw, mini hurdles, rope pull and an agility drill – all of which are completed in a matter of minutes.
While activity is the central focus of the challenge, it will also draw attention to two major social issues among youths: doping and bullying. A parallel campaign to end violence against children will be supported by Unicef, the global children’s rights and emergency relief organisation. Former Miss SA and Hottentots-Holland High School pupil Jo-Anne Strauss is the project’s goodwill ambassador and will make appearances at schools to address the issue. “We believe that this is a meaningful way to get schools involved in physical activity, particularly as government has highlighted the need for children to become more active,” says Let’s Play head Vaughn Bishop. “[Children] needn’t be superstars; the challenge is designed to accommodate everyone at primary school level.” The Let’s Play Physical Education Challenge is endorsed by the Department of Basic Education, Department of Sport and Recreation, Nedbank Sports Trust, Active Education, SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport, Physical Education Institute of SA and MultiChoice. Sponsors include 32Gi, FutureLife and Hitachi Construction Machinery Southern Africa. Schools are invited to enter by phoning 011 894 7411 or 079 529 8862. Schools may also email physedchallenge@activeeducation.co.za.
