No stitch too intricate for Frazer and crew DELIAH BRINKHUIS KK Kaka in Nomzamo, like many other small businesses, is run from a shipping container. It can easily be overlooked in the hustle and bustle of Simon Street. Owner Frazer Kafumlom followed his dream and started the sewing business in 2012. His journey thus far was not an easy one, but he pushed through and today has a well-known establishment. Over the years he has roped in his brother and cousin, Luka Simimzsi and Davie Loiwonde and established a well-known outlet which is frequented by locals. Kafumlom is originally from Malawi, where life in the town of Nkotakota was hard. They remember days of toiling under a blazing sun as fishermen and farmers, as jobs in Malawi were few. “No job was too humble as it is a means to survive,” says Loiwonde. With little skills their journey

towards success could not take off. “My older brother told me I would have a better life as a tailor,” Kafumlom recalls. He stepped towards his dream and started training with a local where he gained hands-on experience. For Kafumlom, the road to perfecting the craft was long and there were many days when he wanted to throw in the towel and walk away from his dream. “I had to learn how to sew in a straight line first, and started off seaming items,” he recalls. From here he was tasked to mend clothes and a year later he was the proud creator of his first clothing item – a skirt. A better life was beckoning on the distant horizon. He packed up, left behind his family and the only life he had known for 26 years, to come to South Africa. Here his sewing skills landed him a job in a clothing factory in Observatory, where he made anything from t-shirts to curtains. He longed two run his own business and after a few years he rented a shipping container and courageously opened his own one-

man business, not far from KK Kaka’s current premises. Business went well and soon he was able to buy his own (bigger) container and move. He asked Loiwonde to join him, and later Simimzsi. Since then, the three of them have been filling their days dressing up locals. No job is too challenging and they never turn anyone away. The trio’s talents are endless and the walls of the container are covered in rows of impeccably made clothing items. Their best sellers are women’s tights, which ensure a steady workflow and income, while the demand for commissioned work like traditional clothes, formal suits for men and women, and choir cloaks are also received. Alterations are also done, and should you want to spruce up your home, curtains can be made too. “Sometimes business is slow, but there’s always something to do,” says Kafumlom. “I am happy... this has been a blessing from God,” he says. Frazer Kafumlom can be contacted on 073 681 6841.

‘Parliament in shambles’ The State of the Nation Address (SONA) last Thursday saw members of the EFF party forcibly removed by parliamentary security and police and the DA leaving the assembly. President Jacob Zuma’s address started an hour later than scheduled after the meeting was disrupted by EFF members, who wanted to know when Zuma would pay back the money which was spent on his private Nkandla estate in KwaZulu-Natal.

John Myers from Strand: “It was a shambles and disgraceful – it’s not the way to run parliament, which should be a respected place. This uproar will harm investing,”

3

Be alert The City of Cape Town warns the public against scams purporting to offer jobs with the City.

Malibongwe Mlaswa from Asanda Village says this year’s State of the Nation Address was chaotic. “The EFF has a right to ask the question, which the president has to answer, but it was not the right time to do so. Our country is a laughing stock around the world and it will have a negative effect on international investments.”

“As a public figure the president has to disclose when taxpayers’ money is used,” says Adriaan Engelbrecht of Strand. He, however, feels that the country will survive this, as many other crises before.

The City has been alerted to a social media post, advertising fire training and job placement. Only a matric certificate and identity document is apparently needed, while the scamsters requests a deposit of the R200 for the “registration fee”. The City appeals to anyone who may have deposited money to this particular individual, to register a case with the police.

Jeanette Pentz van Strand sê: “Die gedrag in parlement was onvanpas.

Die parlementêre sitting Donderdagaand was ongedissiplineerd.”

Linda Kwangi from Sir Lowry’s Pass says the EFF set the wrong example by asking the question about the paying back of money during the state of the nation address, as she feels it was not the right platform. “It was unorderly; this will cost the country the loss of investors,” she said. Controlled burn at Helderberg Reserve The City would like to advise the community that there will be three separate prescribed burns within the Helderberg Nature Reserve during which an area of approximately 49ha will be burnt. The actual date of the burn is dependent on weather conditions and will be communicated to the surrounding communities once confirmed. The controlled burn will affect residents living along Hillcrest Road, Ridge Lane, Mountain Road, Upper Mountain Road, Verster Avenue, Louw Avenue, Faure Crescent, and Hendriksz Road, as well as residents of Erinvale Estate. Helderberg Nature Reserve staff will ensure that the procedure is conducted safely and efficiently, with the assistance of staff from other City reserves and the City’s Fire and Rescue Service. For safety reasons, the reserve will therefore be closed to the public on the days of burn. “In our efforts to ensure the safety of our residents, we advise that those living in the surrounding area keep their windows shut while the burning takes place; remove all flammable items such as gas canisters from outside areas; and remove laundry from washing-lines to prevent odour contamination from smoke,” says the Mayoral Committee member for Energy, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Johan van der Merwe. “It may also be wise to use sprinklers to dampen gardens as a further precautionary measure. The controlled burn forms part of our efforts to build a sustainable and environmentally diverse city for our future generations.” The City can assure residents that the required precautionary plans have been implemented, including obtaining burning permits from the City’s Air Pollution section, Fire and

Rescue Services, and the subcouncil. In addition, the required pre-inspection of the area has been conducted by Fire and Rescue Services. Fire-breaks have also been maintained and widened where necessary, and firefighting equipment and fire hydrants have been tested to ensure it is working. “Helderberg Nature Reserve conserves one of the largest remaining areas of vulnerable Cape Winelands shale fynbos, thus prescribed burns are crucial for the management of this area as fire plays a fundamental role in its lifecycle. The areas requiring burning have enormous restoration potential and this burning will allow management to restore the area to its original natural vegetation,” Van der Merwe explains. “We would like to thank residents for their understanding and cooperation, as this controlled burn forms an important part of the reserve’s restoration plan, which includes using fire as a mechanism to stimulate seed germination as well as reduce fuel loads, which in turn reduces the risk of wild fires.” Helderberg Nature Reserve, situated on the lower slopes of the Helderberg Mountains, is one of many nature reserves and natural areas managed by the City of Cape Town. The 402ha reserve is renowned for its diverse plant life and boasts 613 recorded plant species, as well as new species which are continually being discovered. To date, 13 of the plant species within the reserve are threatened with extinction. For further information on the scheduled burns, contact the Helderberg Nature Reserve on 021 444 9744 or helderbergnature.reserve@capetown.gov.za. For more information on the City’s nature reserves, visit www.capetown.gov.za/naturereserves.

OPERATION CLEAN-UP: Local proportional representative councillor Chantal Cerfontein (second from left) is on a mission to rid Rusthof of illegal dumping spots. “The community needs to take ownership of their neighbourhood and help keep the Strand clean. The City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Department is working extremely hard in these areas to ensure cleanliness, especially because of the health risks associated with illegal dumping. We must therefore be vigilant and bring those who dump illegally to book,” she says. Cerfontein recently accompanied Solid Waste Department workers on their rounds. To report illegal dumping or sewerage blockages, phone the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089.

Nappy Run in aid of special care centres The Helderberg Association for persons with Disabilities (Helderberg APD) recently launched the Nappy Run. Three local preprimary schools, Oakwood at Somerset House, Kids Company Montessori and Bella Bee Playschool have come on board in support of the campaign. This and next month, parents and teachers will donate nappies

which will be distributed to local special care centres. The initiative aims to create awareness about the rights and needs, but also the potential of children with disabilities. For more information contact Dr Cindy WiggettBarnard at helderberg@wcapd.org.za or 021 882 8852 or visit www.nappyrun.org.za

Donation of goods welcomed by Cineda The Superboss Owners’ Group in South Africa donated stationery, toys, educational books and food parcels to Cineda Centre for the Intellectually Disabled on Saturday 7 February.

Cineda principal Mignon Leitch accepted the donation from Jordin Poole, co-chairperson of the club. The Cape Town members attended the handover and were welcomed by the kids and treated to their musical skit. Afterwards, a few kids were taken for a drive in legendary South African vehicles and enjoyed a meal together. A “thank you” to the Cineda Daycare to all the Superboss members from across South Africa who donated, members who attended and the kids for making the day so special.

Eskom needs introspection We all paid – and will pay – very harsh increases on our electricity bill for a certain period. The reason forwarded by Eskom was to provide them with the means to invest in additional power generating plants – since their last problem in 2008. Eskom, being a national entity, doesn’t need to accumulate the money before investing – they are fully entitled to ask for a loan, especially when the need is high. Did they invest adequately or did they simply distribute the additional income between their management and investors? Since it is customary to react only when the paw-paw hits the fan in Africa – hence never doing any preventative maintenance – Eskom is henceforth waiting until some plants are deficient to handle the repairs. Is this the way a national body serves its clients or puts its clients at risk? I have been asking the City of Cape Town to answer the fol-

lowing question: “What did Eskom invest after its last power cutting emergency some years ago?” But this was to no avail. Certainly Eskom is now finally providing power shedding schedules, stating reasons of their need, providing lots of reasons for their very negative action towards the national economy, but never giving any indication of their investments for increasing power supply. Is investing millions in coal extraction in natural reserve areas the best solution when we are lacking power plants? Is their answer that we will have to wait for several years, the right one? So we have to brace ourselves for long periods of load shedding. What would they do if all their customers decided to cut their electricity bills by half? It would perhaps make them think with a little more humility and look for better immediate actions. JWJM (HANS) POOT GORDON’S BAY

SUSAN PRETORIUS GORDONSBAAI

A special thanks to every individual who God led to give to us so generously and who helped with hosting a Christmas event for 400 children and

120 seniors. Thank you to Faradiba, Alan Ransome, Basil, Adam, Albert and Delilah (our regular band), and our present resident singer Mackey Baderoen. The angels joined her when she sang “Oh Holy Night”. Everybody enjoyed themselves thoroughly and each one left the hall with more than one gift. We are assured that all those who gave have become our continued sponsors and supporters. We salute you in His name. SWEET BLESSINGS MACASSAR

Do’s and don’t’s of driving I am very concerned about the high accident rate in the Helderberg area. Please consider articles or features on the following: the use of cellphones while driving; pedestrians walking in the road; ignoring road signs; the lack of number plates; poor

examples set by traffic officials; half of drivers do not bother [to wear] seat belts; and unrestrained children, often standing. [A total of] 45 to 50 people die on South African roads every day. STEVE JONES

DOING THEIR BIT FOR CHARITY: Love was all around at the Somerset West Methodist Primary on Valentine’s Day, when the learners donated the amount of R1 420 to Helderberg Hospice. The Valentine’s Day programme, organised and steered by the prefects, focused on cancer, and learners and teachers alike enjoyed the song, dance and poetry presented by their peers. The funds were raised through collections from Grade 1 to Grade 7 learners. Here the school’s headboy Geraldo Liebenberg hands over the donation to Patricia McNaught-Davis and sister Rumay Oosthuizen of Helderberg Hospice. Hospice also presented a talk on the organisation’s work and the importance of healthy living. PHOTO: DELIAH BRINKHUIS

Meng organiese kompos by die grond in.

Bestandele: , 3 oorryp piesangs , 100g botter , 1/2 koppie suiker , 20 ml grondboontjiebotter , twee eetlepels heuning , 500 ml meel , 2,5 ml bakpoeier , 2,5 ml koeksoda , knippie sout , 50 gram amandelvlokkies , 50 gram pampoenpitte , 25 gram gekrummelde pekanneute Metode: Voorverhit oond op 180 grade. 1.

3. Gooi bietjie botter in as dit te klewerig raak. 4. 6.

Joint drive to register ECD centres in the Cape The City of Cape Town and the provincial government are joining forces to reduce the number of unregistered Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres in the city. The registration drive has become an annual occurrence and the aim this year is to help at least 100 ECD centres become compliant for registration by the end of June. Having started on 11 February, officials will host 26 information sessions for ECD operators across the city, running until Thursday 11 June. Currently, there are an estimated 482 unregistered ECDs in Cape Town. By national legislation, ECD centres are required to register with the provincial Department of Social Development. To register, they must meet the norms and standards set out in the Children’s Act of 2005. Once registered, the facilities qualify for subsidies determined and administered by the provincial government. In addition, the Social Development Department plays an oversight role, monitoring the compliance of ECDs and is empowered to cancel an ECD’s registration certificate if it does not meet norms and standards. The City’s role is to assist ECD centres in becoming compliant in terms of planning and health and fire safety aspects, so that they are able to meet the criteria for registration. The Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate is the coordinator, assisted by the City’s Planning and Building Development Management Department, Environmental Health section and Fire and Life safety officials. “Legislation dictates that ECD centres are safe, healthy and child-friendly spaces. So,

we need to look at the physical infrastructure as well as aspects such as ablution facilities and play space. Even more important, however, is the quality of care and education that the children receive,” says Mayoral Committee member for Social Development and Early Childhood Development Suzette Little. “That is why the City’s role also includes training of staff, which covers a range of issues such as good governance, curriculum standards and first-aid.” In October 2013, the City agreed to waive zoning restrictions which had previously made it difficult for creches and aftercare centres in informal settlements to operate legally and therefore access subsidies from the Western Cape Government. “We are very aware of the many challenges that ECD operators face in becoming compliant and that is why we are putting all of these measures in place to try and assist them as best as we can,” Little explains. “We are going out to communities to engage with ECDs, but it is a two-way street and they need to meet us halfway. We are not out to punish anyone – there is a severe shortage of quality ECD facilities in the country and the City can only build so many. It is therefore in our best interests to help as many ECDs as possible become compliant, because ultimately it will benefit the children who attend these centres.” For more information on registration, ECD principals or teachers can contact: ) Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate of the City of Cape Town: Andile Wotshela on 021 417 4088 or 083 316 2718 ) Department of Social Development for provincial government: Neville Basson on 021 483 5011.

COVERED FOR 2015: Ashka Fourie (centre), a Grade 7 pupil at Oklahoma Street Primary School in Macassar, was the lucky winner for the Macassar Shoprite’s Class of 2015 competition. The annual competition, run across all Shoprite and Checkers stores, sees the company cover Ashka’s school fees for the academic year. At the R1 000 cheque handover, from left, are Rozelle Jacobs (Shoprite Macassar admin manager), Ashka, and Oklahoma Street Primary School principal Patrick Beukes.

NEW ADDITIONS: Bizweni Pre-Primary has added a new classroom to the school and now boasts six classrooms. This year there are two classrooms for the four-year-olds. The outside toddler play area has also been upgraded with new Dura Turf, making it safer. The school wants to thank the parents of 2014 for their support with their fundraisers which made these changes possible.

BELANGRIKE KENNISGEWING

River Gorge and Crystal Pools trail closed in winter The Steenbras Nature Reserve’s River Gorge and Crystal Pools hiking trail will be closed during winter for general maintenance and to allow the vegetation to recover. It will be closed as of Friday 1 May. In the meantime, visitors are urged to obtain permits early as the reserve is reaching its capacity for bookings for the remainder of the season. Visitors have until Thursday 30 April to frequent the Steenbras Nature Reserve’s River Gorge and Crystal Pools hiking trail before its winter break. The Steenbras River Gorge and Crystal Pools hiking trail is found within the boundaries of the Steenbras Nature Reserve, with the gorge starting at the Steenbras River mouth. It is one of 16 nature reserves and natural sites managed by the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management Department. “The City is making every effort to ensure that the popular Steenbras Nature Reserve remains in pristine condition so that its visitors can continue to enjoy its natural beauty and the diversity of plants, birds and small mammal species along the hiking trails, which cater for both novice and more experienced hikers,” says Mayoral Committee member for Energy, Environmental and Spatial Planning, councillor Johan van der Merwe. “Following a very busy summer season, which has attracted many visitors, the closure of the facility over winter is need-

ed to allow the vegetation to recuperate and for general maintenance to occur to get ready for the next influx of visitors.” Van der Merwe adds majority of residents honoured its permit system during the 2014/2015 season. “The limitation of visitor numbers and more controlled access is helping to prevent degradation of the area and makes it safer for the visiting public. The City wants to thank the public for working with us by obtaining permits to ensure that the facility remains a wellloved space for all to enjoy,” he says. “Together, we are building a sustainable city for our future generations,” said the City’s Bookings for the Steenbras Nature Reserve’s River Gorge and Crystal Pools will resume on Thursday 1 October. The reserve is scheduled to reopen to the public on Sunday 1 November. Visitors who require permits, especially for hiking on weekends and public holidays, must contact the Steenbras Nature Reserve well in advance to secure a booking. All bookings and permits are administered via email to: steenbras.naturereserve@capetown.gov. za. No cash sales or issuing of permits are available at the gate. For enquiries or information regarding this area, email the reserve at steenbras.naturereserve@capetown.gov.za. Alternatively visit www.capetown.gov.za/naturereserves.
