100 YEARS AND COUNTING: Margaret Wright celebrated her 100th birthday at the Heritage Manor Retirement Village in Somerset West on Thursday 12 March. Margaret has been a very active and involved woman throughout her years. From being an avid shell collector to penning all her travel adventures, she – more than most – can tell you about the changes of the world. She celebrated the milestone with family and friends. She also had a birthday cake decorated with shells. Pictured with her are her three sons, from left, Merwyn, Rodney and Edgar. PHOTO: TAMSYN JANTJIES

Two business robbers put behind bars for 15 years in a white Toyota Conquest on the N2 in the direction of Khayelitsha,” says provincial police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk. “During investigation, Detective Warrant Officer James Robertson positively linked two of the five men to the business robbery. A third suspect could not be linked and the case against him was withdrawn.” Somerset police station commander Colonel Mary-Ann Williams praised the officer for his dogged investigation, which eventually led to the successful conviction of the guilty men.

Two robbers will spend the next 15 years behind bars, after they were found guilty of business robbery and sentenced in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court last week. Tulani Limani (33) and Siyabonga Mgontshawa (34) were found guilty of robbing Markham Somerset West at 09:45 on 26 September 2012. According to a provincial police statement, five armed men entered the store, threatened staff and demanded the keys of the safe. “Inside the safe the robbers took cellphones, cash and vouchers. Eery superstitions no longer fazes Helderberg residents

Parents urged to vote for SGBs This month will see the election of school governing bodies (SGBs) throughout the province.

The bodies represent all sectors of the school community, including parents, teachers, non-teaching staff and learners in grades 8 to 12. Governed by the South African Schools Act, the forum has considerable powers to govern schools. The provincial education department encourages all parents to participate in the nomination and election process to ensure the school serves the best interests of their children. “While SGB members do not have to have formal qualifications, we urge parents with skills in bookkeeping, accounting and legal services to consider standing for election,” says provincial education minister, Debbie Schäffer. The term of office for elected members will be three years and the duties of the SGB include: ) the school’s constitution and mission statement; ) code of conduct; ) budget and financial management; ) recommending staff appointments; and ) supporting the principal, teachers and other staff. Furthermore, the department has undertaken to provide elected members with training and support by officials who specialise in school management and governance.

Last month, principals, who will act as electoral officers, already underwent training and received training manuals which covers every aspect of the elections. All parents and legal guardians of children registered at schools are eligible for election. “Parents will nominate and elect SGB members at a parents’ meeting called by the school,” Schäffer explains. “Parents must complete a voter registration form and return it to the school for inclusion on the voters’ role. Parents may seek nomination but may not nominate themselves; they must submit nominations at least five days before the election meeting.” Teachers, non-teaching staff and learners will nominate and elect members at similar meetings. “We call on parents to attend the nomination and election meetings, because it needs to have a quorum of at least 15% of parents,” she adds. “In the past, we have found that many schools have had to postpone meetings because they did not have quorums. The higher the turnout and the greater the participation rate, the better chance the school has of electing an SGB.” The outgoing SGB will continue to operate until the first meeting of the new SGB. The newly elected forum must meet to elect office bearers within five days of receiving notice from the electoral officer. The outgoing SGB must hand over operations to the new SGB within 10 days of the first meeting.

Friday 13 March was the second Friday the 13th celebrated this year. But it seems locals are no longer bothered by superstitions and said bad luck associated with the day. Helderberg Gazette took to the street to ask residents their take on Friday the 13th.

JOYCE BENJAMIN: Ek glo nie aan sulke goed nie; dis net ’n doodnormale dag. My God is saam met my en daaraan glo ek.

CAANITA FREDRICKS: I just do not believe in Friday the 13th. What if someone’s birthday happens to fall on that day, then people want to label it as a bad omen? No, I don’t think it’s relevant in our time.

DENNIS WILLIAMS: Ek glo glad nie aan Vrydag die 13de nie. As iets moet gebeur, moet dit net gebeur. Mense kan nie ’n spesifieke datum skuld gee as nare dinge met hulle gebeur nie. Hierdie Vrydag is ’n gewone dag – soos enige ander Vrydag.

MEGAN LAUBSCHER: Personally, I think you make your own good luck or bad luck. Dates and days don’t have much to do with what happens daily.

SISUSA MASXOLE: I don’t believe in any superstitions – or this date and day. To me, Friday the 13th is just another normal day.

THERESA MCCARTHY: To be honest, I am a little superstitious but Friday the 13th has always been a lucky day for me. No, I don’t believe this day is bad luck at all.

XOLELWA NANI: I don’t believe in Friday the 13th. My day has been absolutely great so far. It is just another date and another day on the calendar. PHOTOS: TAMSYN JANTJIES

MTUMTUM MBALI: I am not a superstitious person at all. Life just takes its natural course as far as I’m concerned. I really don’t see all the fuss about this specific date on this specific day.

Learners sell their wares Green-fingered learners of Newberry House Montessori School recently showcased their talents with their first-ever stall at the popular Lourensford Harvest Market in Somerset West. Their wares included fresh fruit and vegetables, pot plants, a variety of cacti, bird feeders and nesting boxes, fire starter packs, freshly cut flowers and free range eggs. The school, situated on Lourensford Wine Estate, encourages a sustainable outlook and lifestyle. “The weekly market is an ideal opportunity

for our [learners] to take advantage of the surrounding farming environment and experience a 360-degree [approach] of learning and reaping the benefits of hands-on work that creates economic independence,” says Newberry House head, Wayne Talbot. “The income generated at the market is invested into a fund to finance school camps and other outings.” The school will host a stall at the market every Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00. Seminar series until 27 March

During the demonstration all the attending children concentrate intensely on the movements shown to them as well as the instructions they are given.

Learning t’ai chi from a master Niklaas Thysen, a retired police officer and Strand resident, has been teaching the art of t’ai chi to community members in the Helderberg for a number of years. He started mastering the art several years ago and later obtained his master status in t’ai chi, thus making him Master Thysen to his students. Thysen is currently offering lessons at the South Strand Library and the Somerset West Roundtable Club for both adults and children. “T’ai chi is very comfortable for children of a young age as it is easier for their bodies to get into the various positions. Generally, t’ai chi helps with balance, relaxation and brain function, so it is beneficial for all ages,” he says. At the moment, Thysen is trying to create a bigger awareness of t’ai chi and its benefits within the Helderberg area. He would like to provide his services to more schools as he says “t’ai chi also aids in self-defence’. For more information, call the South Strand Library on 021 854 3380 or Thysen on 073 274 1139.

EMO TREE OP: Emo Adams tree op Vrydag 27 Maart om 19:00 by die Somerset-Wes Primêre Skool op. Kaartjies is beskikbaar by die skool teen R120 per persoon. Vir verdere inligting skakel gerus die skool by 021 851 2040/1. Niklaas Thysen (right), a t’ai chi master, teaches children at the South Strand Library the art of keeping your balance by distributing your weight evenly through measured movements.

Programme provides skills for all Residents of Lwandle and Strand will form part of the City of Cape Town’s Learn to Earn programme this year. The programme aims to give residents an economic hand up through the skills development programme in six subcouncils. It has been in operation since mid-2012, focusing on building technical and entrepreneurial skills of unemployed in the metropole. The project works in phases, with phase 1 and 2 covering business skills training and capacity building in a core economic focus area, while phase 3 focuses on participants who have demonstrated entrepreneurial ability.

Loads of fun for all Helderberg libraries will offer fun activities during National Library Week (16 to 20 March). Books and other borrowed items can also be returned and no fines will be issued. The events include fun play sessions at Lwandle Library (17 March), a programme on bursary applications at Strand Library (18 March) and a trip to the nature reserve on 20 March (Somerset West). Contact the libraries for more details.

Each phase of the programme is aimed at increasing the market-related skills of participants, so as to allow access to available employment opportunities in their communities. “The objectives of this programme align with our aim to enhance job readiness and, thus, the employability of our residents. For me, one of the greatest elements of this project is the practicality of it, as the programme actually links graduates with potential employment opportunities and cultivates an environment conducive to successful entrepreneurship,” says Mayoral Committee member for Tourism, Events and Economic De-

velopment, Garreth Bloor. “Participants who successfully complete the programme will be linked to available placement opportunities – be it an internship, learnership, further education, access to a recruitment agency, or an interview opportunity, which makes a real difference in the lives of participants.” Some of the technical skills participants attain through the programme include call centre skills, baking for profit, catering, point of sale skills, warehouse skills and barista skills. Anyone interested in upcoming programmes can phone Learn to Earn on 021 671 2230 or 021 361 5972.

Qualifying applicants embrace City’s digital housing database Since the launch of the City of Cape Town’s digital housing database, less than two months ago, nearly 3 000 qualifying applicants across the city have registered and over 500 have updated their details online. The online portal has made this service far more accessible and has been greatly welcomed by applicants across the city. The City’s digital housing database, which

was launched in November last year, has received a positive uptake, with 2 878 applicants having registered via the online portal and over 500 applicants updating their details hassle-free. The City encourages qualifying applicants to make use of the online database as it is a convenient and safe way to access this City service – including with a smartphone.

Residents who do not have access to a smartphone are encouraged to make use of the City’s free SmartCape internet access at libraries, while elderly residents can even be helped by their children and grandchildren to access the database online without having to face the challenges of mobility and travel to housing offices. The database, which is protected, updated

and audited, is necessary to prevent queuejumping. To apply online, please visit http://ctcs.capetown.gov.za/HWL2012Online/ It is important to note that qualifying applicants who do not have internet access can still visit any housing office or contact the call centre on 021 444 0333 to update their information or to register.

FOR A CAUSE: Helderberg Hospice second-hand shops usually deal in clothing, books and occasional pieces of furniture but they were recently donated the biggest item they have ever received – an entire kitchen unit. Well-known journalist, David Bullard, recently moved to the Helderberg and he and his wife decided to upgrade the kitchen in their new home. As the Bullards have been loyal supporters of Hospice care for many years, they decided to donate the existing kitchen to Helderberg Hospice. All the units (dark wood with a cream stone top) are in excellent condition and available for purchase, including the five-plate gas hob, prepping bowl and tap, a sink unit (without the sink) and a corner cupboard. Call Louise Smith, manager of the Hospice shops, at 021 851 9626 to make this your dream kitchen.
