Healthy, easy lunchbox snacks Your children won’t be tempted to trade snacks with their friends when their lunch boxes come packed with goodies as tasty as

Sweet potato chips: Bet your kids can’t eat just one of these chips! That’s OK, though, because sweet potatoes are filled with fiber and antioxidants. To make a batch, cut potatoes into thin slices (a snap when you use a mandoline), gently rub with oil, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, and bake until crisp. How to make it: Heat oven to 200°C; coat a baking sheet with vegetable cooking spray; wash two medium sweet potatoes, cut into thin slices, and place in large bowl; pour oil onto the palms of your hands and gently rub two teaspoons of vegetable oil onto sweetpotato slices, tossing to combine; sprinkle with one teaspoon of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, tossing in bowl to coat evenly; place slices in a single layer on prepared baking sheet; bake for 20 minutes; turn chips over and bake until slightly crisp, about five minutes.

Date squares: Preheat oven to 350 degrees; make the date jam by combining one and a half cups of dates (pitted and chopped), 1/4 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of water and one teaspoon of vanilla extract in a saucepan and bring to a boil; simmer for five minutes until mixture resembles a thick paste; allow mixture to cool completely; make the oatmeal layer by combining one and a half cups of flour, one cup rolled oats, one cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup walnuts (optional) or 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional), 1/4 teaspoon salt and 3/4 cup butter in mixing bowl; reserve two cups of this mixture for topping and press the remaining mixture into bottom of greased 9x9 inch pan; spread cooled date jam over the layer and sprinkle reserved oatmeal mixture evenly over top; bake 25 to 33 minutes and cool completely; then cut into squares.

Kinderprojek verbreed kinders se horison Die Kinders vir die Koning-projek in die Cassablanca is reeds 20 jaar aan die gang.

Lynette van Dellen het die projek van stapel gestuur om kleuters van die strate te hou. ‘‘Daar was ’n behoefte om die kinders van die strate af te kry en meer oor die Christelike geloof te leer,’’ sê Estie du Plessis, die projek se geldinsamelaar. Die kinders word gereeld op uitstappies geneem om meer oor die wêreld buite hul gemeenskap te leer.

Tans word die kleuterskool in ’n skeepshouer op die perseel van die Cassablanca-gemeenskapsaal gehuisves en akkommodeer 16 kinders, tussen die ouderdomme van drie en ses jaar, waar hulle bybel onderig kry, leer om te verf en koördinasie leer.

Elke oggend kry tussen 60 en 80 kindertjies ook les in die saal.

Volgens Du Plessis kry hul geen staatstoelae en is hulle afhanklik van donasies van individue.

Hulle het ook ’n huurdersaansoek by die munisipaliteit ingedien en hoop dat dit suksesvol sal wees sodat hulle die saal voortaan kan gebruik. ‘‘Ons het genoeg geld om twee ‘prefab’ klasse op te rig om meer kinders te akkommodeer en ons wil graag begin bou op ’n perseel wat aan ons geskenk is. Dit sal so om en

by R5-miljoen kos om al die strukture aan te bring’’, verduidelik Du Plessis.

Verskeie lede van die gemeenskap gaan kom hand by sit om ’n sokkerspan en ’n groentetuin te begin en iemand kom ook kunsklasse aanbied. Daar kom ook ’n maatskaplike werker om die kinders te help en te bemoedig.

Die Kinders vir die Koning-projek help ook om na die gemeenskap se diere om te sien deur die DBV namens hulle te kontak as hul diere mediese hulp nodig het.

Daling in brandstofprys: goed of kommerwekkend?

Met die daling in die brandstofprys is baie mense in hul noppies, maar tog is daar mense wat vorentoe kyk en wonder wat dit vir die toekoms van die brandstofprys beteken. Baie wonder ook wanneer dit die kospryse gaan laat daal en of dit so hoog gaan bly. Helderberg Gazette het die strate ingevaar en inwoners se menings hieroor gevra.

It was terrible when it was so high last year. Hopefully people will now be able to buy cars and food will be more affordable.

Murdered for 80 loaves of bread DELIAH BRINKHUIS Police have opened a murder case after a 27-year-old driver of a Sasko delivery truck was stabbed to death in a robbery on Saturday 17 January in Sir Lowry’s Pass.

Police say the incident happened at about 04:35 in William

Street when a group of eight men approached the driver and his co-worker while they were delivering bread at a house shop.

One man, armed with a knife, allegedly approached the driver’s side of the truck, opened the door and dragged the driver out of the vehicle.

He demanded cash. When the driver said that he did not have the keys to the safe containing the money, the robber stabbed him in the neck.

The driver collapsed and died on the scene as he was trying to run from the robbers.

The robbers took 80 loaves of bread and fled.

Lwandle police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama says residents made the discovery while they were erecting informal homes at about 17:20.

Gama says the police confiscated the skull and dug deeper in the hope of finding

the rest of the skeleton, but their search proved fruitless.

The police’s dog unit also searched the area for more remains.

An inquest docket was opened.

Olympic swimmer to talk to participants The Momentum Grape Mountain Bike Ride is a new addition to the 2015 Stellenbosch Wine Festival, which this year will be held at the Coetzenburg Sports Grounds from Friday 30 January to Sunday 1 February. The 18km ride will take participants towards Jonkershoek and back. Riders will ride past estates such as Lanzerac, Starke Condè and Rufera to the turnaround point at the nature reserve gate, before riding back to the start via Assegaaibos and the Jonkershoek cycle path. CANSA Relay For Life takes place in February Keen walkers can gear up for the annual CANSA Relay For Life at the Hottentots Holland High School on Saturday 7 February.

Swimmers participating in the Sanlam Cape Mile open water swim next month will be pleased to note that BMT Stellenbosch and swim organisers will be hosting a talk about open water swimming on Thursday 22 January.

Both seasoned swimmers and newcomers to the sport will benefit from the evening’s line-up, which will include discussions with Olympic swimmer Trudi Maree and top South African triathlete Vicky Van. The talk will be held at the BMT Bike Shop, Black Horse Centre on the corner of Dorp Street and Market Street, Stellenbosch from 19:00.
